Christmas: 10 Ways to Get the Message Out 1. SHINE YOUR LIGHT VOLUNTEER for a Christmas ministry that reaches out to the unsaved. Be on the lookout for opportunities to discuss what the true meaning of Christmas is all about. You’ll be giving a wonderful gift. 2. LIVE THE SEASON STRENGTHEN your daily prayers. Beginning December 1st, ask for God’s help in reaching others with the true meaning of Christmas. 3. ORGANIZE START a ‘Get the Message Out to the Community’ committee with a few Christian friends. Meet a few times before Christmas to brainstorm, plan and implement a project that communicates the true meaning of Christmas to the community. 4. SHARE WITH YOUR CHILDREN TEACH the true meaning of Christmas to children. Pray for their boldness to tell others. Establish family traditions centered on Christ. In our family, we have a tradition of reading aloud short stories, poems or excerpts from books that establish the true meaning of Christmas. 5. USE VERSE TO EMPHASIZE THE INCARNATION BE ready with this Bible passage committed to memory: “She gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7). 6. BE PREPARED ALWAYS have literature (evangelistic tools) explaining the true meaning of Christmas for when the time is right. If you don’t have it with you, offer to mail it or bring it to the person at a later time. 7. LEAVE LITTLE REMINDERS BUY some inexpensive true meaning items from a discount store such as plastic mangers, costume jewelry, cards and ornaments. Leave an item randomly in your travels throughout the community during Christmas time. Go for places with high-volume foot traffic. 8. USE YOUR SPIRITUAL ARMOR STAY active in your relationship with God. There are powers that do not want the true meaning of Christmas emphasized or available. The apostle Paul said, “Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11). 9. PERSUADE OTHERS WITH FULFILLED PROPHECIES COMPARE the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14 about a virgin who will carry and give birth to the Son of God with the following verse committed to memory: “This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:18). 10. PRACTICE STRESS MANAGEMENT STAY calm. It can be stressful when others are adamant about eliminating Christmas and replacing it with Holiday. Remember to exercise, nap or do any activities that help you to relax. Christmas Customs Before Jesus ENTER the words, Christmas, pagan and origin into any online search engine, and a startling truth will emerge. Many customs surrounding Christmas date back thousands of years, even long before Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem. Many historians mention the ancient practice of honoring the sun god in late December, as the days began to lengthen after the annual winter solstice. In ancient Rome, the time of year was known as Dies Natalis Invicti Solis, which in English means “the birthday of the unconquered sun.” Parties, banquets and gift exchanges were held in late December for the festival known as Saturnalia, named after the heathen god Saturn. Over the centuries, these celebrations of heathen gods mixed with the worship of the true Son of God, and customs not endorsed by the Bible became intertwined with the spread of Christianity.

S for the customs people associate with Christmas today, some are very new, while others date back to antiquity from religions other than Christianity. Among the newer customs is the image of Santa Claus, aka Father Christmas or St. Nick (not to be confused with Old Nick, which is another name for the devil). The chubby, white bearded man in a red and white suit is the result of an evolution of sketches and descriptions from the late 1800s. Ironically, the character was not always depicted as an obese old man, but appeared younger and elflike in some illustrations. The image of an old, fat man in red and white outfit received a great deal of help from a Coca-Cola marketing campaign in the early twentieth century. The company wanted to remind people that Coke was not just a summertime beverage, so in 1922 it employed the slogan ‘Thirst Knows No Season.’ Nine years later, the soda giant used drawings by Michiganborn illustrator Haddon Sunblom to spread the jolly look of the fat man worldwide. Santa Claus’ other name, Kris Kringle, shows how Christianity intermixed with fiction. Kris Kringle derives from the word Christkindl, which is German for ‘Christ child.’ It’s astonishing that Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the Christ child, has morphed into Kris Kringle, aka Santa Claus.
