WELCOME TO THE CENTER! As a new year begins, we’re excited to be kicking off the second half of the 2021-22 Center Presents Season sponsored by Allied Solutions.

The coming weeks will bring several great performances that were postponed from previous seasons, including jazz violin virtuoso Zach Brock, known for his work with Snarky Puppy; Piaf! The Show, a multimedia tribute to the legendary French singer; pop vocalists The Company Men, who blend today’s hits with reimagined classics from the past; and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, the gold standard in celebrating jazz tradition.

Also on the schedule are rising classical stars the Balourdet Quartet with 2021 American Pianists Awards finalist Dominic Cheli; acclaimed magician David Williamson, with two shows at the Tarkington; Tango Argentina, featuring a dozen top Argentinian musicians and dancers; and the Polish Wieniawski Philharmonic Orchestra, with a program of Rossini, Wieniawski and Schubert.

F inding his path Jazz violinist Zach Brock’s work reflects unique background

Hearing Zach Brock’s origin

story as a well-tutored child of a musical family, one can see how he wound up as one of the world’s leading electric/acoustic jazz violinists.

But as he tells it, the path didn’t become clear until he got hit by a car.

More specifically, during his sophomore year studying classical violin performance at Northwestern University, his bicycle was struck by a hit-andrun driver. The crash shattered his left leg, requiring a lengthy convalescence that upended his life for a few years, but eventually brought him clarity.

“I had to really make some serious choices in my life, at least I felt I did at the time, to acknowledge that the thing that really most fascinated me and inspired me was improvisation and specifically jazz improvisation,” Brock says. “Not just the act of improvising, but … the possibility of high-level cooperation and incredible, transportive, transcendental moments being created out of this, between people, with no language. That was something that always excited me.”

Since then, Brock has become an established composer-

bandleader with several recordings under his belt, as well as a sought-after collaborator and sideman who has recorded and toured with jazz greats like Stanley Clarke and Phil Markowitz.

Named Downbeat Magazine’s Rising Star Violinist of 2013, he is perhaps best known as a member of the cutting-edge instrumental collective Snarky Puppy, with whom he shares a 2016 Best Contemporary Instrumental Album Grammy Award for their release Culcha Vulcha.

Brock was originally set to play the Palladium in May 2020 before his tour was postponed by the pandemic. In the meantime, he has released two albums: Light Shines Through, a live solo recording, and Polyphony, a collection of violin duets.

“I’m trying to take my time and really explore with sounds and writing different kinds of songs,” he says by phone from his NYC home.

Brock hails originally from Lexington, Kentucky, where he grew up surrounded by all kinds of music. His grandfather played jazz trombone and owned a music store. His (Continued...)

father played trumpet and guitar, and his mother was a pianist and voice teacher. Brock began Suzuki violin instruction at age 4, and his parents started taking him to folk music gatherings.

By his early teens, he was studying classical music and also playing jazz, inspired in part by the legacy of Stéphane Grappelli, the French-Italian violinist who rose to fame playing with gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt in the 1930s.

Brock began accompanying his father to jazz gigs and jams that drew top players from Cincinnati, Indianapolis and elsewhere.

“It was pretty much the only scene where white people and black people would play music together in Lexington, and I didn’t really think about that, but I think about that a lot now,” Brock says. “That was really meaningful to me, to have relationships with people, musicians, mentors who were my dad’s age, and working together to create something that we all dig. And I got a lot of tough love, and I got a lot of lessons from people in the community who were playing these gigs.”

The older players turned him on to a wider range of jazz –

especially bebop and post-bop horn players – and he began to appreciate jazz violin forebears who were less conventional than Grappelli: Stuff Smith, who used an electric amplifier while playing in swing bands with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald; and JeanLuc Ponty, the classically trained Frenchman who caused a stir in the ’60s and ’70s with his electronic effects and rock influences – an approach that presaged Brock’s work with Snarky Puppy.

Meanwhile, as a teen, Brock was looking to rebel a bit and chart his own course as a musician. Among other ventures, he picked up guitar and started a rock band.

“I wanted to find a way to (pursue music) that didn’t really reflect what my parents wanted me to do with it,” he says. “I got into hardcore punk rock, I was really into skateboarding, checked out all that stuff and pretended I liked it, even when I didn’t. It was kind of a big stewpot of things that were happening.”

Then came college, and the accident, and a clearer sense of direction. One quality that kept bringing Brock back to jazz was its ability to absorb

influences from other genres and cultures while still retaining its spontaneity and essential identity. For example, the rhythms and melodies of Indian music have greatly influenced jazz, while jazz harmonies and chord changes have little place in Indian music.

“You can write a song that’s based on a raga, or you can play a raga scale in a jazz song, and you can even play a jazz song in a way that doesn’t sound like traditional jazz,” he says. “It might even be closer to an approximation of Indian classical music, but the way you improvise and stuff like that, it’s still jazz. I just find that absolutely fascinating, and I find it really inspiring.”

After finally completing his degree in 1999, Brock was active on the Chicago jazz scene for several years before moving with his wife to Brooklyn and launching headlong into collaborations with New York players. Among many projects, he has released three albums as a bandleader-composer on the Dutch label Criss Cross.

With each step, he hones a musical vision that incorporates all of his influences – classical and rock, acoustic and electric, tradition and innovation – into a distinctive individual voice.

“The original jazz pioneers, they were putting their energies into creating their own identity in a very fierce and fearless way, but while they were aware of the past and the tradition of the music, it was not their predominant motive to just preserve that,” he said. “So it was less like classical music and more like ‘How do you find your own voice in this music?’ And I think that really spoke to me as a rebellious teenager, and also as somebody who wanted to hold on to some idea that in this big mess of a world and a country that we’re in, there is still a possibility of creating something more beautiful, more fair, more democratic, more just – and I heard that in jazz.”

BEYOND THE STAGE! Opportunities for Education and Experience at the Center

Luminaries: Stage Combat Then & Now: Historical and Contemporary Practice January 25 | 2PM ET The Palladium The presentation will begin with a brief overview of the history of stage combat, focusing on its development and practice in 19th century England.

Next, Lopez will discuss contemporary practice and the various approaches to combat on stage and in film/television. Finally, he will demonstrate various stage combat techniques: the standard combats, single sword and swashbuckling, and unarmed fighting.

Intro to Stand-Up Comedy February 7-28 | 6PM ET The Studio Theater This class will serve both as a look at the history and evolution of stand-up comedy and as a practical course that will cover joke mechanics and writing for stand-up as well as performance theory and practice. Over the course of the class, students will write and practice a five-minute routine to perform for friends and family at the graduation show. NOTE: Prior to registering for this class, please make sure of your availability on March 4 as all class participants are expected to perform in the graduation show.

ABOUT THE CENTER The mission of the Center for the Performing Arts is to engage and inspire the Central Indiana community through enriching arts experiences.

The Center for the Performing Arts is a nonprofit arts and education organization responsible for the operation and programming of a three-venue campus at Carmel’s City Center. Together, the Palladium, the Tarkington and the Studio Theater create a welcoming place for the community to engage with all forms of the performing arts. The campus also provides a home for the affiliated Great American Songbook Foundation and hosts six Resident Companies, along with other organizations that utilize the facilities for their events. Since opening in 2011, the Center’s venues have hosted over 2,500 performances for nearly a million patrons representing all 92 counties in Indiana, all 50 states and 25 nations. The campus also draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year for other public events.

Each year the Center provides access to the arts for thousands of people of all ages – building community, enriching lives and inspiring minds young and old. Education and outreach initiatives include performing arts classes for children and adults and special programs for upcoming generations, such as the interactive Faegre Drinker Peanut Butter & Jam concert series for preschoolers, the Palladium PALS reading club, educational videoconferences for students around the state, and the Student Discount Ticket program, through which students can attend select performances for just $15.

ABOUT THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK FOUNDATION The mission of the Great American Songbook Foundation is to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook.

The beautiful melodies and thoughtful lyrics created by the musical masterminds of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood during the first half of the 20th century represent the golden age of American popular music.

Based at the Palladium, the Great American Songbook Foundation is permanently affiliated with the Center for the Performing Arts and is one of a handful of worldwide Cultural Affiliates of the Los Angeles-based GRAMMY Museum®. The Foundation carries out its unique mission to preserve America’s rich musical legacy in numerous ways: • The Songbook Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made

significant contributions to the Great American Songbook, with a new class inducted each year. A permanent exhibit, sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Charles M Simons, honoring the people who created and popularized this extraordinary music is located in the Shiel Sexton Songbook Lounge on the Palladium’s Gallery level.

• The Songbook Library & Archives houses sheet music, recordings, and other artifacts from the careers of artists such as songwriters Meredith Willson (The Music Man), Johnny Burke (“Swinging on a Star”), Gus Kahn (“It Had to Be You”), and Hy Zaret (“Unchained Melody”).

• The Songbook Exhibit Gallery presents rotating interactive exhibits that share the music, history, and culture of the Songbook.

• The Songbook Academy ® is a national summer music intensive for high school vocalists dedicated to the music of classic Broadway, jazz and the American Songbook.

• Perfect Harmony, a group music program for older adults, offers a unique opportunity for social and musical engagement, and promotes holistic well-being through music.

Free self-parking is available in the Center Garage attached to the Tarkington building (enter from 3rd Avenue SW) and the Veterans Way Garage east of the Center (enter from Range Line Road).

Valet parking: Starting when doors open, valet parking is available at the West Lobby entrance for select performances. Sponsored by Jaguar Indianapolis and Land Rover Indianapolis, valet service may be purchased for $15 cash at the door or in advance through the Box Office with your ticket purchase. This service is complimentary for drivers of Jaguars and Land Rovers.

ACCESSIBILITY

Accessible parking: Accessible parking spots are available along the loop drive around Center Green, and also in the Center Garage on 3rd Avenue SW and the Veterans Way Garage off Range Line Road. Accessible valet parking is available at the Palladium’s West Lobby entrance.

Arrival: Street-level entry and elevator access are available in the Palladium's West Lobby at the 3rd Avenue entrance and also in the East Lobby near the Monon Greenway.

Seating: Wheelchair-accessible seating is available in all venues. Special seating arrangements may be made in advance by calling the Box Office at 317.843.3800 RESTROOMS

Restrooms are located in the lower Salon level, Payne & Mencias Box Tier and Gallery level of the Palladium, and on the first floor in the lobby of the Studio Theater and the Tarkington. All restrooms are accessible.

Coat check services for Palladium patrons are available on a seasonal basis at the west side of the lower Salon level near the restrooms.
