I’m happy to report the Center is fully open and construction is complete! It is a great feeling to arrive on campus on a night with three performances happening simultaneously. Take time one evening to linger on the Center Green. The buzz, energy and excitement you will hear are for the arts. The artistic roots are taking hold and growing devoted audiences. We are so very grateful for the support of our many subscribers, concert-goers and sponsors. Without the collective support, the Center for the Performing Arts would not be possible.

Performances on stage, however, represent only a small portion of the offerings at the Center. We are active with educational outreach, alongside our role as a museum and community gathering spot, too. As you read this issue of the Center’s newsletter, notice the breadth and scope of the events taking place. Outreach and engagement extends beyond an evening performance.

Take for example the Michael Feinstein Foundation for the Preservation of the Great American Songbook. The new gallery exhibit G.I. Jive: The Music and Entertainers of World War II is a partnership with the Indiana chapter of the United Service Organization (USO). Linda Hope, daughter of iconic comedian Bob Hope, visited the Palladium on October 2 to kick-off the opening, alongside artistic director Michael Feinstein.

Don’t miss this opportunity to honor the role music played in America’s history. Visit the Great American Songbook gallery, located on the gallery level (Fourth Floor) of the Palladium.

Guests are welcome to visit between 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The gallery is also open to concert-goers attending the Songbook series at the Palladium.

A way for corporations to get involved with the arts is through the education and outreach initiatives presented by the Center for the Performing Arts.

As a Carmel-based company, Software Engineering Professionals (SEP) focused their partnership on activities that benefit the community. From their City Center offices, SEP has a birds-eye view of the arts campus and the weekly Saturday market housed on the Center Green. The Carmel Farmers Market was a natural fit for SEP to present the Center’s youth outreach booth, interacting with market shoppers and families.

“We truly wanted to be more than just a sponsor,” said SEP’s Traci Dossett, Vice President of Operations. “Our partnership is based on actively engaging with events, from attending concerts to educational outreach. SEP is delighted to work with our friends at the Center.”

SEP was founded in 1988 by engineers who wanted a different type of company. Over two decades later, SEP is a leader in advanced software and technology development. Clients include Fortune 500 and Forbes Global 2000 organizations as well as mid-sized companies and even some startups. Most of these clients are in the medical, healthcare, aerospace, national defense and energy markets. SEP has collaborated with these clients in two major areas: information systems to support business operations and software products which are marketed to their customers.

IN THE NEWS Second performances added To accommodate high demands, Vienna Boys Choir and legendary comedian Bill Cosby will now perform two shows in the Palladium.

In addition to the Vienna Boys Choir performance on November 25 at 8 p.m., they will also be performing on November 27 at 7 p.m. The previously announced April 15 evening Cosby performance has sold-out. A 3 p.m. matinee performance has been added on April 15, 2012.

Sandi Patty debuts Broadway CD at the Palladium The Center for the Performing Arts presented a worldpremiere CD launch and performance by vocalist Sandi Patty.

“Sandi Patty: Broadway Stories” featured the Carmel Symphony Orchestra on October 5. The Palladium concert was the

first opportunity for fans to experience Sandi Patty’s new American Pops album (to be released nationally October 18).

In addition to the live performance, concert-goers received a complimentary advance copy of the new CD.

Duke Energy’s winter clothing drive The Center for the Performing Arts and Duke Energy are partnering to keep Hamilton County warm. Winter clothing donations will be accepted inside all three venues at the Center for the Performing Arts: The Palladium, Tarkington and Studio Theater. Concert-goers can drop-off coats, hats, scarves, gloves and mittens that are sized for toddlers, youth and teens. The clothing collected will be distributed through Hamilton County schools, Kingdom’s Kloset and Third Phase.

In addition to the clothing collection, the Duke Energy Foundation is sponsoring the Center’s Country Series. On the night of each country performance, Duke Energy has invited Central Indiana non-profits to share information on their services.

SEP is one of the largest and most well-respected engineering companies in central Indiana that provides full product development support. According to the Indianapolis Business Journal, SEP is one of the ten largest Software Development companies in Indiana and has been honored over the past two years to be a Best Place to Work in Indiana.

The Carmel Farmers Market is located on the Center Green on the Center for the Performing Arts’ campus. The 2011 season continues every Saturday 8a.m.—11:30a.m. through October 29.

G.I. JIVE! THE MUSIC OF WWII

1. During WWII, The Andrews Sisters entertained the Allied forces extensively in America, Africa and Italy, visiting Army, Navy, Marine and Coast Guard bases, war zones, hospitals, and munitions factories. They encouraged U.S. citizens to purchase war bonds with their rendition of Irving Berlin’s song “Any Bonds Today?”

Besides getting soldiers’ toes tapping and lifting the spirits of the public, music played a very significant part in World War II at home and abroad.

The exhibit, G.I. Jive: The Music and Entertainers of World War II opens in October and will explore the influence of music on the homefront and abroad. The exhibit is a partnership of the Michael Feinstein Foundation and the Indiana chapter of the United Service Organization (USO).

3. Lili Marleen was adopted into the popular song by Norbert Schultze and first performed by singer Lale Andersen.

Not long after the controversial song became popular with German troops (Nazi propaganda leader Joseph Goebbels hated the song and tried to ban it, but was unsuccessful), Allied troops also adopted the tune as their own. The song was popular across all lines because the lyrics were so honest and relatable, about a man missing his love during war, and showed how music touched people around the world.

Unlike past eras, when patriotic music had not just a strong military message, but a military sound, World War II was a unique experience for songwriters and singers, who found that the once popular styles were out of favor with the public.

Instead, audiences wanted fun music, dance music, and so, songs like The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy became instant hits.

The military message and patriotism may have remained in some ways, but the war-inspired songs sounded like much of the rest of popular music at the time.

4. Hy Zaret, known for his hit “Unchained Melody” later on, was extremely active in the war and like many entertainers, also enlisted. During his time in the special services, Zaret wrote “The Song of the Army Nurse Corps”, the official anthem for the nurse corps and penned several other war conscious tunes, and helped write the material for “Strictly GI” an album produced during the war.

GI Jive: The Music and Entertainers of World War II is an exciting new exhibit for the Foundation, and a special opening celebration and fundraiser benefitting the Foundation and the Indiana chapter of the USO occured October 2. Linda Hope, Bob Hope’s daughter, made a special appearance at the opening, and Michael Feinstein and other performers attended as well.

The exhibit highlights famous USO performers and important songwriters during the war, and includes rare footage from camp shows. Here is a special sneak-peek of a few pieces featured in the exhibit.

5. Al Jolson performed extensively in the USO and war effort and his initial appearances were self-funded and major successes. After his appearances during the Korean War, Jolson suffered exhaustion and a fatal heart-attack. His avid dedication to the troops and sense of duty were particularly unique, and truly emphasized one of the many ways performers got involved in the war effort.

The Center for the Performing Arts celebrated the theater opening – and the completion of the performing arts campus – with a red carpet celebration. The evening featured artistic director Michael Feinstein, Tony Award-winning Broadway and television star David Hyde Pierce, dancers Gennadi Saveliev and Stella Abrera from the American Ballet Theatre and Julia Bonnett, the 2009 winner of the Great American Songbook High School Academy and Competition. Guests were greeted with a cocktail reception with gourmet food station service throughout the evening and after-party entertainment lineup and dancing.

BRICK UNVEILING PARTY On July 28, the Center hosted a reception for the more than 120 donors who purchased bricks and pavers this past spring during our Inaugural Brick Campaign. The engraved bricks and pavers are located on the Southwest corner of the Palladium. Special thanks to Alan Roth Enterprises who braved the record high temperatures in late July to engrave the bricks.

It is not too late to inscribe your message on a brick or paver as a permanent legacy. A brick is a unique, lasting gift to commemorate a birthday, anniversary, wedding, or to honor a loved one. If giving the brick as a gift, we will send you (or the recipient) a certificate to let them know a brick will be engraved in their honor in the Spring.

» For $250 you’ll receive 45 characters on a 4” x 8” brick.

» For $1,000 you’ll receive 60 characters (5 lines) on half of a 2’x4’ granite paving stone.

» For $2,500 you’ll receive 180 characters (15 lines) on a 2’x4’ granite paving stone. Your message will be the only message on the stone.

SUMMER ARTS SERIES CAMP By: Carol Baker, Director of Education & Outreach

In early August the Center for the Performing Arts celebrated the opening of our third performing arts space, a 500-seat proscenium theater called the Tarkington. In preparation, the month of July was reserved for tuning events and performances designed to introduce and “get-to-know” our new venue, including the introduction of a unique educational offering for area summer camps programs - the Summer Arts Series.

This three-day Summer Arts Series program gave students of all ages the opportunity to experience the arts - music, dance, theater and visual art – in exploratory fashion. 244 students from 8 area camp programs from places like Carmel Parks and Recreation, 100 Black Men Summer Academy and La Plaza, participated in one of several artist workshops.

Two workshops involved Young Audiences of Indiana teaching artists from Adzooks Puppets and Sancocho led by Tony Artis, professional musician and African drummaker. Tony Artis facilitated a Chancleta Dance and Music workshop where students experienced firsthand this Afro-Cuban dance and tradition while the Adzooks Puppets’ workshop, “Anything Can Be a Puppet”, had students creating puppets and bringing their puppet characters to life. Following the workshops, one camp teacher noted, “In the short time our campers were at the theater, they experienced a great deal of inspiration and encouragement in creative expression.”
