WELCOME As fall brings its color to Indiana, there’s no better place to enjoy a night out than Allied Solutions Center, where October always arrives with a rich mix of artists and styles from across the country and around the world. Viral violinist Demola kicks off the month, blending Afrobeats, jazz and rock into something entirely his own, while pianist BLKBOK makes his local debut with his boundary-crossing neo-classical sound. For more virtuosic musicianship, don’t miss world-renowned classical pianist Yefim Bronfman or Indian sitar master Niladri Kumaar honoring his late collaborator Zakir Hussain. Classic rock and Americana fans have plenty to look forward to, from the country-tinged harmonies of Pure Prairie League and the yacht-friendly grooves of Pablo Cruise to the storied songwriting of Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers and the Southern country-soul of The War And Treaty. Straight No Chaser alumnus and local broadcast personality Ryan Ahlwardt will launch his new album on the Tarkington stage. For colorful sights on stage, catch the multimedia journey of The Sixties Show or the moving Day of the Dead celebration Hasta La Muerte, with its elaborately costumed performers. If your taste runs to Broadway standards, you’ll enjoy the charming Sharpe Family Singers. For laughs, Michael Carbonaro will deliver his unique blend of magic and comedy, and apparently our audiences have been waiting to see “Entitled Housewife” Becky Robinson, whose show is already sold out. We’re also honoring two pop legends with The Billy Joel Legacy: A Tribute Experience and Invincible, which recreates the moonwalking magic of Michael Jackson. Whatever your taste, we hope you’ll join us this month to experience live performance the way it was meant to be felt. As always, we are deeply grateful to the volunteers, donors, sponsors and patrons like you who make our work possible and worthwhile.

Only the Beginning In new theatrical production, Las Cafeteras take on the big questions
BY HAL SCOTT 6
C
ivil rights activism has always driven the music of Las Cafeteras, but the Los Angeles-based band delves into grander philosophical issues with its new themed production, Hasta La Muerte. Set for Oct. 29 at the Payne & Mencias Palladium, the two-act theatrical and musical performance explores grief and loss through the celebration of life and death, inspired by the colorful Mexican tradition of Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Observed Nov. 1-2 each year, the holiday offers an opportunity – sometimes with a humorous or irreverent tone – to remember and honor family and friends who have passed away. Hasta La Muerte combines choreography, poetry and a score of original and traditional songs to create a spectacle of color and sound and “a moving invitation to travel through time, rhythm and memory,” its creators say.
“As we have performed around the country, I have found that this work resonates a lot with those that have also lost someone and who find joy in the celebration of life collectively through this work.”
– Hector Flores, Las Cafeteras
The story follows the folkloric journey of La Catrina, a sort of patron saint character associated with Day of the Dead whose role is to console the living who have recently lost loved ones, and to guide the dead to the afterlife. Along the way, she encounters other traditional spirits as well as young migrants and other characters facing contemporary challenges. The overall message, the band points out, is that “death is not the end, it is just the beginning.” Las Cafeteras is led by Denise Carlos and Hector Flores, natives of East Los Angeles, where over 90 percent of the residents share Latino heritage. They first met as student activists in the 2000s and later formed the band with like-minded friends from the Eastside Café, a community hub dedicated to economic and social justice. 7
Their vision was to advance the rights of immigrants, women and the LGBTQ+ community through son jarocho, a folk music genre from the Mexican Gulf Coast state of Veracruz that combines Spanish, African and Indigenous influences and often provides the soundtrack for community parties called fandangos. Perhaps the best known song in the son jarocho tradition is “La Bamba,” which evolved for centuries as a wedding dance tune before Richie Valens hit the U.S. Top 40 with his rock ’n’ roll-flavored take in 1958. Las Cafeteras’ version – “La Bamba Rebelde,” or “Rebellious La Bamba” – updates the lyrics from their contemporary Chicano perspective to address issues of war, racism and immigration. Across three full-length albums, Las Cafeteras have gradually incorporated contemporary sounds and beats while remaining true to the music’s traditional elements. Carlos and Flores both sing, strum the eight-stringed jarana, which resembles a small guitar, and dance the zapateado, a percussive tap style often performed atop a wooden platform called a tarima that amplifies the sound. For this production, the touring ensemble includes other traditional instruments along with bass, drums, keyboards and several dancers in a range of costumes and elaborate makeup.
7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29 Payne & Mencias Palladium
In the group’s promotional materials, Flores says the idea grew out of his own experience. “My father passed away at a premature age of 54,” he says. “As I grow older, I understand how important grieving is as well as celebrating the life they had and everything they left behind. I imagined Hasta La Muerte as an opportunity to help process what loss is and imagine what my father’s journey could have been into the afterlife.” Audiences seem to find their own personal connections to the story, Flores says. “As we have performed around the country, I have found that this work resonates a lot with those that have also lost someone and who find joy in the celebration of life collectively thru this work,” he says.

The mission of Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts is to engage and inspire the Indiana community through enriching arts experiences. Allied Solutions Center is a nonprofit arts and education organization responsible for the operation and programming of a three-venue campus at Carmel’s City Center. Together, the Payne & Mencias Palladium, the Tarkington and the Studio Theater create a welcoming place for the community to engage with all forms of the performing arts. The campus also provides a home for the affiliated Great American Songbook Foundation and hosts six Resident Companies. Since opening in 2011, the Center’s venues have hosted over 4,000 performances for more than 1.75 million patrons representing all 92 counties in Indiana, all 50 states and 30-plus nations. The campus also draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year for other public events. Each year Allied Solutions Center provides access to the arts for thousands of people of all ages – building community, enriching lives and inspiring minds young and old. Education and outreach initiatives include performing arts classes for children and adults and special programs for upcoming generations, such as the interactive Peanut Butter & Jam concert series for preschoolers, the Palladium PALS reading club, summer camps, free Student Matinees and the Student Discount Ticket program, through which students can attend select performances for just $15. @CPApresents 42

BEYOND THE STAGE! Opportunities for Education and Experience at Allied Solutions Center
PEANUT BUTTER & JAM: SING ME A STORY WITH INDIANAPOLIS OPERA SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10 AT 10:30AM | THE STUDIO THEATER Every year, the Indianapolis Opera Education Department creates a brand new children's opera to share with children and their families. These operas are a part of our Sing Me A Story series, which focuses on bringing the power of music & live performance to children of all backgrounds. Often inspired by fairy tales and fables, each children's opera has a moral at the center of its story. Children are not only exposed to the thrill of live opera singing, but they are also given the opportunity to learn about important topics like bullying, overcoming fears, acceptance, and making new friends. Peanut Better & Jam is presented in partnership with PEAS for Kids.
LUMINARIES: CARMEL'S LOST COMPOSER TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17 AT 2:00PM | PAYNE & MENCIAS PALLADIUM Classical composer Frederick Hunt was born and raised in Carmel and drew inspiration from the area for his music.
