No genre is off limits to uke innovator Shimabukuro

BY SCOTT HALL

Every so often in the music world, a player emerges with a style and vision so radical that they explode the possibilities of their chosen instrument, leaving peers and predecessors in the dust while providing endless inspiration to generations that follow.
Much like Jimi Hendrix with the electric guitar, Bela Fleck with the banjo and Chris Thile with the mandolin, Jake Shimabukuro is in a class by himself when it comes to the ukulele.
Based on instruments brought to his native Hawaii by Portuguese laborers in the 1880s, the humble but mighty four-string machine is most often heard accompanying singers of traditional Hawaiian songs. But in Shimabukuro’s hands, it becomes a vehicle for blazing jazz improvisation, howling blues solos, delicate classical compositions and innovative interpretations of rock and pop classics. He was already a rising artist in Hawaii and Japan in 2006, when his YouTube cover of the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” went viral (now at over 20 million views) and launched him to global fame.
Since then, the 49-year-old Shimabukuro has released a score of albums in a dizzying range of styles, played the world’s top venues from Lincoln Center to the Sydney Opera House, and collaborated with such names as Yo-Yo Ma, Bette Midler, Ziggy Marley, Warren Haynes, Michael McDonald and Billy Strings.
Speaking by phone from his Honolulu home, he says his new album might put you to sleep – but that’s just fine with him.
Released in January, Calm Seas is a 13-cut collection of ambient compositions for pure, acoustic ukulele, built around natural sounds of birds, waterfalls and crashing waves. It is intended to create a peaceful, meditative atmosphere.
“When we were doing some of the final mixes, I kept dozing off because they were just so relaxing,” he says with a laugh. “I hope that it brings some healing to people or just gives people a moment to relax and unwind. It’s something that you can put on in the background and just go about your day, and hopefully it’s tranquil enough to kind of change your mood, change your environment.”
The record comes on the heels of Shimabukuro’s first-ever Christmas album, Tis the Season, a collection of seasonal tunes and celebrity collaborations. One cut is the Hawaiian holiday song “Mele Kalikimaka” featuring his late friend and mentor Jimmy Buffett, who took him on tour several times in the 2000s.
“I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for his support,” Shimabukuro says. “He made me an official Coral Reefer Band member, and it was just so special to have him as someone who really believed in me and pushed me and opened up a whole bunch of doors for me. So to have that track with him, now that he’s no longer with us, that was so special.”
The previous album, 2024’s Blues Experience, was something else entirely –a full-band collaboration with Fleetwood Mac drummer and fellow Hawaii resident Mick Fleetwood featuring original and classic blues and rock tunes like Little Willie John’s “Need Your Love So Bad” and Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.” Shimabukuro used electronic effects such as overdrive and looping to create unique textures and wail like an electric guitar.
“To tackle those iconic tunes with (Fleetwood) was so special, because he was truly a pioneer of blues and rock drumming,” Shimabukuro says. “He really encouraged me to just go for it and crank the amp and have fun. It was funny, because we were in the studio for seven or eight days total, and the first day, I would have the amp at like 3, and then the second day it would be up at 4, and by the time we got toward the end of the session, it was up at 7 or 8.”
Having played Allied Solutions Center twice before in 2013 and 2016, he knows it’s a uke-friendly place, booking artists like him and the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain while offering three levels of group ukulele lessons and inspiring hundreds of new players.
“I think it’s such a great way to bring the community together and to bring people together and keep supporting the arts,” he says. “I’m just so grateful when I see the instrument affecting the lives of others in a very positive and profound way.”
Shimabukuro’s current tour with bassist Jackson Waldhoff stops at the Payne & Mencias Palladium on May 8. What do they plan to play?
“Probably not the new record, unless I want everyone to fall asleep,” he quips. “We always have certain songs in there, for example, ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps.’ We do a version of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ that usually turns into a sing-along. That’s always fun. And of course, I’ll have a mix of traditional Hawaiian as well as modern songs, and some of my original material as well.”
What does he love so much about the ukelele? In a word: portability.
Friday, May 8 | Payne

“I can always bring it on the plane with me, and if you were to go for a hike or go to the beach or whatever, it’s such an easy instrument to just throw over your back or to stick in your backpack and get to a place that really inspires you, and then sit down and write and make some music, you know?” he says. “I think, growing up in Hawaii, a lot of my creative energy is inspired by nature, being outdoors, whether it’s on the beach or up in the mountains, or even in my travels, being in a different place where you’re just in a different environment, being exposed to different kinds of energy.”
Pressed to name anyone who has taken the instrument as far as he has, Shimabukuro humbly mentions players like the late Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, who scored a massive international hit in 1990 with his “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World” medley. But as any researcher could tell you, the list is very, very short.
“I always believe that there are people out there who are constantly experimenting,” he says. “There are many different boutique makers and builders, and as the technology gets better, there are more creative minds out there making different specialized effects. I feel very lucky that I’m living in this time when those tools are available, but I don’t doubt if all those tools were available 50 years ago or 100 years ago, those musicians and those artists were so creative that I can’t imagine where they would have taken the music and their artistry.”

As we mark our 15th Anniversary Season at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts, we also mourn the passing of local philanthropist and civic leader Rollin “Rollie” Dick, whose tireless work and wise counsel have been vital to our success from the very start.
Rollie became Allied Solutions Center’s first board chair in 2009, two years before its opening. In 2012, Rollie joined the board of our sister organization, the Great American Songbook Foundation. He volunteered his services in countless ways over the years and was a Legacy Member of both boards at the time of his death.
As financial supporters, Rollie and his wife, Cheri, are members of the Legacy Society and the Lifetime Giving Society for both Allied Solutions Center and the Songbook Foundation. They also supported the renovation of the Payne & Mencias Palladium’s Founders Room lounge into what is now the Brham Founders Club.
Anyone who has ever enjoyed a performance at Allied Solutions Center or a program offered by the Songbook Foundation can thank Rollie Dick, whose generosity and community spirit will remain an inspiration to all.
