DEAR FRIENDS, Spring is a season of beginnings, of growth and development, and as we leave behind the cold of winter, we can look ahead to the next phase of development here at the Center for the Performing Arts.

Over the past year, the Center’s staff, board members and community stakeholders have crafted a new strategic plan to guide our operation into the future. It starts with a new mission statement that reflects how our work has evolved since our opening in 2011, and how we intend to broaden and deepen our impact in the years ahead:

The mission of the Center for the Performing Arts is to engage and inspire the Central Indiana community through enriching arts experiences.

Our goal is to secure our standing as an indispensable community asset serving the entire region, certainly through the performances we present, but increasingly in the arts education programs and other experiential opportunities we provide for people of all ages.

To that end, we have identified strategic objectives in six key areas: • Innovative Programming • Community Arts Education • Community Awareness and Engagement • Financial Sustainability • Partnerships, Collaborations and Connections • Organizational Structure and Culture In each of those areas, we are developing specific tactical steps and tangible goals – some bold, perhaps, but all attainable – that will strengthen our organization and enhance the value we bring to the community.

KIP MOORE: ROOM TO SPARE ACOUSTIC TOUR WITH SPECIAL GUESTS MUSCADINE BLOODLINE Friday, March 8 at 8PM | The Palladium Described by Rolling Stone as “one of country music’s most tireless and powerful live draws,” Kip Moore became an instant star when his platinum-selling debut album, Up All Night, spawned three No. 1 hits: “Beer Money,” “Hey Pretty Girl” and the smash “Somethin’ 'Bout a Truck.” His acclaimed third studio album, Slowheart, included the Top 10 country hits "Last Shot" and “More Girls Like You” and landed on multiple "Best Of" lists, including Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, Taste of Country and PopMatters.

Moore’s latest collection, released in November, is Room to Spare: The Acoustic Sessions. The seven-song EP, which kicks off with an unplugged version of fan favorite “Plead the Fifth,” showcases Moore’s signature sound in a strippeddown setting that highlights his gritty vocals and evocative lyrics.

Pianist Marcus Roberts schools young colleagues on the roots of jazz

G

reat music depends on real communication, Marcus Roberts says – communication among musicians, communication between performer and audience – and it carries a lesson we can apply to our harried lives in the digital age.

“Things move very fast, and there’s a lot of data, people texting back and forth,” says the jazz pianist and composer, who rose to national attention in Wynton Marsalis’ 1980s ensemble. “In my opinion, we’re actually communicating less with each other. We’re throwing a lot of meaningless details around, and we’re losing touch with the foundation of communication, which is taking the time to think about what someone’s saying to you, think about what they mean to you, think about what it is that you’re actually, long-range, wanting to achieve with them. …

“If a band plays, if it’s a real band, you see a constant conversation going on, where everybody’s getting to express their thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and what they actually know, and their individual power as a musician. But they have to put it inside of a shared agenda where you make room for everyone involved to do that.”

That’s the spirit Roberts tries to maintain in his trio with drummer Jason Marsalis and bassist Rodney Jordan, and in his extended ensemble, the Modern Jazz

Generation, which performs May 4 at the Palladium. The larger group adds several brass and wind players, most of them 20-something alumni of Florida State University, where Roberts studied and now teaches.

Mentoring younger players is central to Roberts’ work and a way to recognize the support he has received through the years from his family, teachers, church community and other musicians. Growing up in Jacksonville, Florida, Roberts began losing his vision to glaucoma and cataracts at age 5. He taught himself piano, with no formal instruction until age 12, and he learned braille at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, also the alma mater of Ray Charles.

“I always said that if I was ever successful doing it, I would always try to help young men and women who want to play, and try not to base it exclusively on their talent level,” he says. “That’s really why this band exists.”

Aside from his personal story, Roberts says multigenerational collaboration is vital to the history and future of jazz itself.

“August Wilson (the late playwright) told me that to carry on any tradition, you need three generations of people communicating about it. It takes two generations to raise the next generation. And I never forgot that,” he says.

“If you’ve got three generations connected, you can cover a wide range of (Continued...)

years that are relevant to all of those generations, and they help each other figure out how to use the information that was figured out by the people who are doing the mentoring. But even the folks that you’re mentoring, the young people, they do bring a lot of energy, and their understanding of technology, and their love of the music that they grew up listening to. … We need them, and they need us, and I think that authentic relationship is what people like to see. With this particular group, it’s a band, but it’s really something a lot deeper – it’s really a community.”

Roberts’ own mentors have included other blind keyboard players, such as the late jazz great George Shearing, who urged the teenaged Roberts to learn how to read braille music, and his childhood idol Stevie Wonder, now a friend who keeps him posted on the latest technology for the visually impaired. As an associate of the Marsalis family, Roberts is often lumped into the socalled neo-bop or neoclassical wave of players who rejected electric fusion and avant-garde free jazz in favor of the swing, syncopation, harmony and melody of earlier eras. They were criticized in some circles for taking the music “backwards.”

“For some reason, in jazz music there is this weird sense that if you study great achievements, that’s actually going to stop you from being great. It’s never made one bit of sense to me,” Roberts says. “When we were recording and working on stuff with Wynton in the ’80s, all we honestly wanted to do was become better musicians. We understood that we really couldn’t play blues properly, and we understood that our playing of standards was not up to the level that was established by Louis Armstrong and all these people, so we were really just interested in becoming much more proficient in the art of playing jazz.

VERONICA SWIFT FEATURING THE BENNY GREEN TRIO Friday, March 8 at 8PM | The Tarkington Already a veteran at age 24, vocalist Veronica Swift performs regularly at New York City’s famed Birdland club and Jazz at Lincoln Center with Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks. A 2015 prizewinner at the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Vocals Competition, Swift is the daughter of the late bebop pianist Hod O’Brien and vocalist Stephanie Nakasian. Her smooth style and scatting have drawn comparisons to Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O’Day and the great vocalese artist Annie Ross.

The Benny Green Trio is led by respected pianist and composer Green, who learned his chops touring and recording with jazz icons such as Art Blakey, Ray Brown, Betty Carter and Freddie Hubbard. Led since 1989 by violinist and Artistic Director Richard Tognetti, this internationally renowned 18-piece string orchestra performs classical masterworks alongside new commissions and innovative collaborations.

Members use both modern and historic instruments, and only the cellists are seated, adding to the air of energy and individuality.

The ACO was founded in 1975 and has performed in over 350 cities in nearly 40 countries, including appearances at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, London’s Wigmore Hall, New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, Vienna’s Musikverein, Birmingham’s Symphony Hall and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. ZAKIR HUSSAIN AND THE MASTERS OF PERCUSSION Thursday, April 18 at 7:30PM | The Palladium Grammy-winning tabla drum virtuoso Zakir Hussain is one of the most acclaimed percussionists of his time, known for his collaborations with top jazz, rock and classical musicians from George Harrison and the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart to Yo-Yo Ma and jazz great Pharoah Sanders. His work has made him one of India’s top cultural ambassadors and a champion of contemporary world music. Hussain also has composed for ballet, film, and events including the 1996 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony.

The Center for the Performing Arts is a nonprofit arts and education organization responsible for the operation and programming of a three-venue campus at Carmel’s City Center. Together, the Palladium, the Tarkington and the Studio Theater create a welcoming place for the community to engage with all forms of the performing arts. The campus also provides a home for the affiliated Great American Songbook Foundation and hosts six Resident Companies, along with other organizations that utilize the facilities for their events. Since opening in 2011, the Center’s campus has hosted over 2,300 performances and welcomed more than 840,000 patrons representing all 92 counties in Indiana, all 50 states, and 25 nations.

Each year the Center provides access to the arts for thousands of people of all ages – building community, enriching lives, and inspiring minds young and old. Our education and outreach initiatives include performing arts classes for children and adults and special programs for upcoming generations, such as the interactive Peanut Butter & Jam concert series for preschoolers, the Palladium PALS reading club, educational videoconferences for students around the state, and our Student Discount Ticket program, through which students can attend performances for just $15.

Free parking: Free self-parking is available in the Center Garage just south of the Tarkington theater (enter from 3rd Avenue SW) and the Veterans Way Garage east of the Center (enter from Range Line Road).

Valet parking: Starting one hour prior to Palladium performances, valet parking is available at the 3rd Avenue/West Lobby entrance. Sponsored by Jaguar Indianapolis and Land Rover Indianapolis, valet service may be purchased for $15 cash at the door or in advance through the Box Office with your ticket purchase. The service is complimentary for drivers of Jaguars and Land Rovers.

ACCESSIBILITY

Accessible parking: Parking spots for people with disabilities are available along the loop drive around Center Green (south of the Palladium), as well as the Center Garage on 3rd Avenue SW and the Veterans Way Garage off Range Line Road. Accessible valet parking is available at the Palladium’s 3rd Avenue/West Lobby entrance.

Arrival: Street-level entry and elevator access are available at the Palladium’s 3rd Avenue/West Lobby entrance near the Box Office and also in the East Lobby near the Monon Greenway.

Seating: Wheelchair-accessible seating is available in each venue. Special seating arrangements may be made in advance by calling the Box Office at 317.843.3800.

RESTROOMS

Restrooms are located in the lower Salon level, Payne & Mencias Box Tier and Gallery level of the Palladium, and on the first floor in the lobby of the Studio Theater and the Tarkington (all restrooms are accessible.)

COAT CHECK

Coat check services are available on a seasonal basis at the west side of the lower Salon level near the restrooms at the Palladium.

FOOD & BEVERAGE

Concessions are available before the performance through intermission.

Food is not permitted in the theaters. Beverages purchased at the Center are allowed in the theaters.

ASSISTED-LISTENING DEVICES

Assisted-listening devices are available free of charge. Please see an usher to request one.

LATE ARRIVAL POLICY

Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of house management. Video and audio simulcast of the performance is available in the lobbies for your convenience.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURE

In the event of an emergency, you will be instructed by an announcement indicating the best method of exit. Please note the multiple red exit signs. For your safety, please exit in a calm and orderly manner.

POLICY ON CHILDREN

Children 4 and older are welcome to attend performances. All patrons must have a ticket and be able to sit quietly throughout the performance. Children of all ages are welcome at Old Town Companies Family Series Shows with paid admission.

NO SMOKING

The Center for the Performing Arts campus is smoke-free.

WEATHER POLICY

The Center does not cancel performances due to inclement weather.

ABOUT THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK FOUNDATION The mission of the Great American Songbook Foundation is to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook.

The beautiful melodies and thoughtful lyrics created by the musical masterminds of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood during the first half of the 20th century represent the golden age of American popular music.

Based at the Palladium, the Great American Songbook Foundation is permanently affiliated with the Center for the Performing Arts and is one of only five worldwide Cultural Affiliates of the Los Angeles-based GRAMMY Museum®. The Foundation carries out its unique mission to preserve America’s rich musical legacy in numerous ways: • The Songbook Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the Great American Songbook, with a new class inducted each year. A permanent exhibit honoring the people who created and popularized this extraordinary music is located in the Shiel Sexton Songbook Lounge on the Palladium’s Gallery level.

• The Songbook Archives houses sheet music, recordings, and other artifacts from the careers of artists such as songwriters Meredith Willson (The Music Man), Johnny Burke (“Swinging on a Star”), Gus Kahn (“It Had to Be You”), and Hy Zaret (“Unchained Melody”).

• The Songbook Exhibit Gallery presents rotating interactive exhibits that share the music, history, and culture of the Songbook.

• The Songbook Academy® Summer Intensive is a national performing arts program for high school vocalists and the only one of its kind dedicated to the music of the Songbook.

• Perfect Harmony provides therapeutic music programming for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other neurodegenerative conditions.
