DEAR FRIENDS, Winter has departed at last, but here at the Center, spring and summer are no vacation. This is an increasingly busy stretch of time on our calendar.

In addition to our music camps and educational programs, we’re thrilled to have some great performers coming to the Palladium for the very first time. They include comedian Dennis Miller, a cappella kings Straight No Chaser and the lovely and talented Diana Krall. You’ll find details in the pages that follow.

Summer at the Center also brings one of our favorite annual events: the Great American Songbook Foundation’s Songbook Academy® summer intensive. Forty of the nation’s top teen vocalists will spend a week here learning from arts and entertainment professionals, then perform before a full house at the Palladium on July 28. One will be named Songbook Youth Ambassador for the year and potentially launch a career with a series of high-profile performances across the country.

Combining education, artistry, community and the preservation of America’s unique musical legacy, the Songbook Academy truly exemplifies our mission here at the Center and the Songbook Foundation. You can read more in the cover story that begins on Page 16.

Friday, May 18 at 8PM | The Palladium After first making his mark as the acerbic anchor of Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update,” Dennis Miller has continued with his multifaceted career as an actor, author, comic, sports commentator, political observer and radio and TV talk show host.

Among several talk shows he has hosted on TV and radio, his half-hour HBO program Dennis Miller Live aired from 1994 to 2002 and earned five Emmy Awards and three Writers Guild of America awards. Miller also wrote the New York Times bestsellers The Rants, Ranting Again, I Rant, Therefore I Am and The Rant Zone.

Fans can expect a fresh approach to the Great American Songbook when pianist-singer Diana Krall and her band play the Palladium on their Turn Up the Quiet World Tour.

SONGBOOK ACADEMY® FINALS

Saturday, July 28 at 7PM | The Palladium

The Great American Songbook Foundation’s annual Songbook Academy® summer intensive is the nation’s only youth music program dedicated to the timeless standards of jazz, pop, Broadway and Hollywood. From hundreds of applicants coast to coast, 40 are chosen to come to the Center for the Performing Arts for a week of workshops, masterclasses, discussions and mentoring from a team of entertainment industry professionals and respected arts educators, led by Songbook Foundation founder Michael Feinstein.

This closing concert includes performances by all 40 participants, including 10 finalists who vie for the title of Songbook Youth Ambassador and a year of highprofile performances at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

Other public events during Academy week include the Public Masterclass on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 25, and the all-day Songbook Showcase on Thursday, July 26. Admission to both is free, ticket is required.

For 40 of the nation’s top high schoolage vocalists, it is the moment of truth: the annual Great American Songbook Academy Finals concert.

After an evening of performances in a Palladium packed to the rafters, the judges select just one of these young talents to be Songbook Youth Ambassador for the coming year.

With that honor comes a chance to launch a professional career, joining five-time Grammy Award nominee Michael Feinstein for a series of performances at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Feinstein’s cabaret clubs in New York and San Francisco. Some have recorded albums. Some have appeared on America’s Got Talent and other shows. Maddie Baillio, the 2014 Songbook Youth Ambassador, scored the lead role in NBC’s 2016 Hairspray Live! broadcast.

This year’s Songbook Academy® summer intensive takes place July 21-28, and that closing concert on Saturday, July 28, promises to be as compelling as ever, with a parade of exceptional teens delivering heartfelt performances of songs their greatgrandparents danced to.

However, Chris Lewis, executive director of the Great American Songbook Foundation, says the events of the preceding week are often just as exciting and potentially more impactful.

Now in its ninth year, the Songbook Academy is the nation’s only youth music intensive dedicated to celebrating and preserving the timeless standards of pop, jazz, Broadway and Hollywood. This year, hundreds of applicants from 27 states – most notably Indiana, California, New York, Illinois and Florida – submitted audition videos to the admission panel. Although each applicant receives personalized feedback, only 40 will be selected to come to central Indiana for the Academy, a week of workshops, masterclasses and mentoring from entertainment industry professionals and respected university educators.

Along with Songbook Foundation founder Feinstein, past mentors have included Broadway stars Eden Espinosa, Laura Osnes and Jarrod Spector; the Manhattan Transfer’s Cheryl Bentyne and Janis Siegel; and Marc Cherry, creator of ABC’s Desperate Housewives.

“The finals are the big public event that people focus on, and understandably so,” Lewis says.

“But even more magical are the little moments during the week, when it’s 7 o’clock on Tuesday night and the mentors and the kids have been working all day, and some talented young person has a breakthrough that takes their game to a new level. Those are the moments that really make this entire endeavor worthwhile.”

That’s the kind of week Finn Sagal had last year, when the teen from suburban Los Angeles was on his way to claiming the Songbook Youth Ambassador title.

“Every single day is a complete joy that you get to spend with incredible people,” said Sagal, whose postAcademy performances have included singing the National Anthem at an Indianapolis Colts game. “The environment is incredibly supportive, the students are amazing, and the mentors give you advice you will never forget. You get to learn so much and have the time of your life.”

Parents also give the program high marks.

“This is an experience that our daughter will take with her throughout her career,” said one. “She made friends that she remains in contact with and made several professional contacts as well. We feel incredibly fortunate that she was able to participate.”

Said another: “The sense of friendship and camaraderie that the kids were able to develop, even though they were all competitors, was truly wonderful and one of the best parts of the week.”

In addition to the Saturday finals, other public performances during Academy week include the Public Masterclass on Wednesday afternoon, when 10 randomly selected participants receive onstage critiques from Feinstein and the other mentors, and the all-day Songbook Showcase on Thursday,

when all 40 participants perform and 10 are selected to compete in the finals.

Admission to the two earlier events is free. Tickets and event information for the Songbook Academy Finals are available at TheCenterPresents.org.

In addition to the Songbook Youth Ambassador designation, other awards presented at the finals include the Songbook Spirit Award, for the participant selected by peers as the most charismatic performer of the week, and the Songbook Celebration and Songbook Inspiration awards, each of which includes at least one guaranteed performance with Feinstein.

The Songbook Academy is coordinated by the Great American Songbook Foundation. The Songbook Academy Finals concert is presented by the Center for the Performing Arts.

ABOUT THE CENTER The mission of the Center for the Performing Arts is to welcome, engage, inspire, and transform through compelling performing arts experiences in a world-class environment.

A home for world-class entertainment, the Center for the Performing Arts is a nonprofit arts and education organization responsible for the operation and programming of a three-venue campus at Carmel’s City Center. Together, the Palladium, the Tarkington and the Studio Theater create a welcoming place for the community to engage with all forms of the performing arts. PARKING

Valet: Beginning one hour prior to each performance, valet parking is available at the West Lobby entrance. The valet service is sponsored by Land Rover Indianapolis & Jaguar Indianapolis. The valet service is $15 or is complimentary for Jaguars and Land Rovers.

Free Self-Park: Secure, on-site garage parking is located south of the Palladium.

RESTROOMS

Restrooms are located in the lower Salon level, Payne & Mencias Box Tier and Gallery level of the Palladium, and on the first floor in the lobby of the Studio Theater and the Tarkington (all restrooms are handicap accessible.)

COAT CHECK

Coat check services are available on a seasonal basis at the west side of the lower Salon level near the restrooms at the Palladium. Coat room facilities are also available at the Tarkington and the Studio Theater.

FOOD & BEVERAGE

Concessions are available before the performance through intermission.

Food is not permitted in the theaters. Beverages purchased at the Center are allowed in the theaters.

ASSISTED LISTENING DEVICES

ABOUT THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK FOUNDATION The mission of the Great American Songbook Foundation is to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook.

The beautiful melodies and thoughtful lyrics created by the musical masterminds of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood during the first half of the 20th century represent the golden age of American popular music.

Based at the Palladium, the Great American Songbook Foundation is permanently affiliated with the Center for the Performing Arts and is one of only five worldwide Cultural Affiliates of the Los Angeles-based GRAMMY Museum®. The Foundation carries out its unique mission to preserve America’s rich musical legacy in numerous ways: The Songbook Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the Great American Songbook, with a new class inducted each year. A permanent exhibit honoring the people who created and popularized this extraordinary music is located in the Shiel Sexton Songbook Lounge on the Palladium’s Gallery level.

The Songbook Archives houses sheet music, recordings, and other artifacts from the careers of artists such as songwriters Meredith Willson (The Music Man), Johnny Burke (“Swinging on a Star”), Gus Kahn (“It Had to Be You”), and Hy Zaret (“Unchained Melody”).

The Songbook Exhibit Gallery presents rotating interactive exhibits that share the music, history, and culture of the Songbook.

The Songbook Academy® Summer Intensive is a national performing arts program for high school vocalists and the only one of its kind dedicated to the music of the Songbook.

PERFECT Harmony provides therapeutic music programming for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other neurodegenerative conditions.
