DEAR FRIENDS, If you think the Center for the Performing Arts is the place to experience worldclass artists and top regional talent, we won’t disagree. Our spring calendar brings you the best in live performance from the worlds of pop, country, jazz, classical, international, dance, family entertainment and, of course, the Great American Songbook. Likewise, our resident companies feature the finest theater, dance and classical music Indiana has to offer.

What you may not realize is how often the Center presents opportunities for you and your family and friends to explore your own performance talents and even take the stage yourselves.

In February, for example, 15 area residents learned the basics of stand-up comedy in a weekly class taught by professional touring comedian Mat AlanoMartin. While soaking up the history, theory and mechanics of the art form, they also developed their own five-minute comedy routines. On March 10, the participants will test their acts before a live audience in a free show at our Studio Theater.

Our Dance Discovery classes explore moves from different eras and cultures under the tutelage of dance professionals. For example, the March 8 class in Latin dance at the Tarkington, setting the stage for upcoming performances by Ballet Hispánico, will be led by Venezuelan-born dancer Erica Dominguez, founder of the FlamencÓle dance company. Stay tuned for word on other upcoming Dance Discovery sessions.

On April 13, the Center celebrates World Voice Day by opening the Palladium stage to the first 30 people who arrive with a song in their heart and sheet music in hand. An emcee and a piano accompanist will anchor this fun and informal evening of live karaoke cabaret, which is sponsored by the Voice Clinic of Indiana and free to the general public.

Direct from Kiev, The National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine Formed by the Council of Ministers of Ukraine in November 1918, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine is considered to be one of the finest symphony orchestras in Eastern Europe. Its first conductor was Oleksander Horilyj. Natan Rachlin was the Artistic Director of the Orchestra from 1937 until 1962. Stefan Turchak, Volodymyr Kozhuchar, Fedir Hlushchenko, Igor Blazhkov and Theodore Kuchar consequently conducted the Orchestra as its Principal Conductors. Other conductors who worked with the NSOU include Leopold Stokowski, Igor Markevitch, Kurt Sanderling, Evgeny Mravinsky, Kiril Kondrashin, Evgeny Svetlanov and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. Soloists who performed with the NSOU include Artur Rubinstein, Yehudi Menuhin, Isaac Stern, David Oistrakh, Sviatoslav Richter, Mstislav Rostropovich, Emil Gilels, Leonid Kogan, Gidon Kremer, OlehKrysa, Monserrat Caballe, Jose Carreras and Juan Diego Flores.

The NSOU was entrusted with the premiere performances of the works of the following composers: Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich, Aram Khatchaturian, Boris Lyatoshynsky, Valentyn Silvestrov, Myroslav Skoryk and Evgen Stankovych.

The Orchestra gained international recognition over a remarkably short period of time. After an appearance in Moscow, Dmitri Shostakovich commented: “This orchestra has as distinguished a group of performers as one would be likely to find anywhere. The ensemble of the orchestra is of the highest level. In addition, the various soloists and instrumental groups within the Orchestra play exceptionally and complement each other beautifully – as would the greatest of the world’s symphony orchestras.”

Since 1993, the NSOU has released more than 100 sound recordings which include both Ukrainian and international repertoires. Most of these recordings have received the highest international acclaim. In 1994, the Australian Broadcasting Company rated NSOU’s recording of Boris Lyatoshynsky’s Symphonies No. 2 and No. 3 as “The Best Recording of the Year.” The CD of Silvestrov’s “Requiem for Larissa” was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005. The CD of Bloch and Lees’ Violin Concertos was nominated for a Grammy Award four years later.

The NSOU has performed in successful concert tours throughout Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Belarus, China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, England, Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates.

“... A program rich with energy and unusually adventurous placed the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine in a highly favourable light when it gave its only Sydney concert during its Australian tour on Friday.

This is an orchestra with many virtues. Its strings can conjure up a vibrant songfulness; the woodwinds have a fruity, penetrating ripeness; the brass could endanger the walls of Jericho; the percussion might wake the dead,” said the Sydney Morning Herald.

Volodymyr Sirenko, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Born in 1960 in the Poltava region of Ukraine, Volodymyr Sirenko has been compared by the international press to other brilliant conductors such as Esa-Pekka Salonen and Simon Rattle.

In 1989, Sirenko graduated from the Kyiv Conservatory, where he studied conducting under Allin Vlasenko. In 1990, he was named a finalist at the International Conducting Competition in Prague. A year later, he was appointed Chief Conductor of the Ukrainian Radio Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until 1999, when he became the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the celebrated National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine (formerly known as the Kyiv State Symphony Orchestra).

Volodymyr Sirenko is an Honored Artist of Ukraine (1997) and an Honored Artist of the Russian Federation (2003). In 2001, he received the Shevchenko National Prize, Ukraine’s most prestigious award.

Sirenko has toured Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Oman, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. He has worked with many international orchestras including the Moscow Philharmonic, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Sinfonia Warsovia, NOSPR (Katowice), the Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra, the Bratislava Radio Symphony, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the National Philharmonic of Russia, the Brooklyn Philharmonic and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Sirenko has appeared in numerous concert halls around the world, including Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Brucknerhaus (Linz), Barbican Hall (London), Cadogan Hall (London), Theatre des Champs-Elysees, Opera Comique (Paris), Seoul Art Center, Centro Manuel de Falla, Filharmonia Narodowa (Warsaw), the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory and the Great Hall of St. Petersburg Philharmonia.

Alexei Grynyuk, Piano Kiev-born pianist Alexei Grynyuk displayed tremendous interest in music from his early childhood and at just 6 years old started giving his first concerts.

He attracted wide attention at age 13 when he won the first prize at the Sergei Diaghilev All-Soviet-Union piano competition in Moscow. By then he had already been touring Eastern Europe as a soloist as well as performing Mozart and Chopin piano concertos with Ukrainian orchestras. He went on to win numerous awards at international piano competitions, including first prizes at the Vladimir Horowitz International Piano Competition in Kiev and the Shanghai International Piano Competition in China.

Equally at home in Classical, Romantic and Twentieth Century repertoire, Alexei Grynyuk has been invited to give solo recitals at many prestigious venues and festivals around the world, including the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatoire, Wigmore Hall and the South Bank Centre in London and Salle Cortot and Salle Gaveau in Paris. He has also been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Radio France and Ukrainian, Lithuanian, Chinese and Russian television.

Enjoying worldwide critical acclaim, Alexei Grynyuk was described by Le Figaro as a “master of transparent and sovereign touch … astonishing personality and absolutely transcendental virtuosity.” After his performance with Maestro Barry Wordsworth, the Worthing Herald commented that “The mesmerising fingers of Ukrainian pianist Alexei Grynyuk gave an unforgettable rendering of Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini that even the composer himself would surely have appreciated.”

Grynyuk’s musical development was shaped by his studies at the Kiev Conservatoire under Natalia Gridneva and Valery Kozlov. He also won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied with Hamish Milne. His career has been generously supported by the Alexis Gregory Foundation, leading him to perform recitals for the renowned piano series at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Chateau Vaux Vicomte in France.

Last season, aside from the successful concerto appearances with the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra, Brighton Philharmonic and Krakow Philharmonic, Grynyuk celebrated an evening of Liszt’s Bicentennial in Kiev, performing the composer’s B Minor Sonata followed by both piano concertos. In the near future he will perform Rachmaninov’s Third piano concerto with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine at the Rachmaninov Festival in Kiev, and give a recital for the 150th anniversary of Kiev Philharmonic Hall.

University of Indianapolis Spotlight Performance

VIENNA BOYS CHOIR

Saturday, March 4 at 8PM | The Palladium Performance Sponsored by The Voice Clinic of Indiana More than five centuries after its founding, the famed Vienna Boys Choir still has surprises in store as it returns to the Palladium on a 32-date North American tour.

The choir’s current program, simply titled Smile, is a life-affirming tribute to a universal human gesture that bears much in common with the act of singing.

To reflect that theme, Choirmaster and Conductor Oliver Stech has selected 22 sacred and secular songs in a dizzying range of styles: world music, Broadway tunes, Austrian folk songs, Viennese “feel-good music,” contemporary works and classical fare from the likes of Vivaldi, Mozart, Schubert and Mendelssohn.

Several of the pieces – including a South African prayer, two Indian spirituals and William Boyce's “Alleluia” – have never before been performed by the choir. In another first for the group, some selections feature choreography by Austrian stage director Susanne Sommer.

Formally established in 1498 by Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, the Vienna Boys Choir has continued to evolve in the many years since. The choir’s boarding school in Vienna houses 100 students from around the world, ages 10 to 14, who receive standard education as well as musical instruction and spend 11 weeks each year touring in four separate ensembles. Approximately one-fourth of graduates continue on to professional careers in music, and many have siblings, fathers, uncles and grandfathers who also have been members of the choir. spotlight sponsor

Song: Foggy Dew (Canon Charles O’Neill), Arr. Danú The year 2016 is a very big commemoration year in Ireland. Ireland marks 100 years since the 1916 'Easter Rising' a famous event where Irish Nationalists staged a rebellion against the English seizing some of the major buildings in Dublin including the General Post Office. The Foggy Dew was written in 1919 and is one of the great songs about this event.

This unusual version of 'The Broken Pledge' came from master piper Liam O'Flynn. We heard this particular version of 'The Braes of Busby' from the playing of another great piper, Ronan Browne.

BALLET HISPÁNICO March 17 & 18 at 8PM | The Tarkington Ballet Hispánico brings communities together to celebrate and explore Latino cultures through innovative productions, transformative dance training and community engagement.

The New York-based company performs a diverse repertory by leading choreographers as well as emerging artists from Venezuela, Cuba, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and elsewhere. The works fuse Latin dance with classical and contemporary techniques to create a new style of concert dance in which theatricality, athleticism and passion propel every move.

Led by Artistic Director & CEO Eduardo Vilaro, the company has produced multifaceted performances featuring masterworks by Nacho Duato, cutting-edge premieres by Cayetano Soto and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, and live music collaborations with renowned artists such as Paquito D’Rivera and Ruben Blades, to name a notable few.

Eduardo Vilaro, Artistic Director and CEO Eduardo Vilaro was the first artistic director to assume the reins of Ballet Hispánico from its founding director and National Medal of Arts recipient Tina Ramirez. After seven years of igniting Ballet Hispánico's vision with a contemporary perspective in dance and culture, he assumed the additional role of CEO for the organization.

Vilaro was born in Havana, Cuba and raised in the Bronx. He holds a BFA from Adelphi University and an MA from Columbia College in Chicago. Upon his graduation from Columbia College, he founded Luna Negra Dance Theater in Chicago, a company that served as a springboard for Latino dance throughout the Midwest for 15 years.

Vilaro’s own choreography is devoted to capturing the spiritual, sensual and historical essence of the Latino cultures. He has created more than 25 ballets for Luna Negra and Ballet Hispánico and has received numerous commissions from dance festivals and arts organizations.

STANDING THE TEST OF TIME Recreating classic sound, Nashville’s Time Jumpers get noticed

The Time Jumpers have been on a roll lately.

Those wins, however, came only after a heavy loss.

The Nashville supergroup’s third album, Kid Sister, was released to wide acclaim in 2016 and brought the band its fifth and sixth Grammy nominations: one for Best Americana Album and another for Best American Roots Song, recognizing guitarist-vocalist Vince Gill as author of the title track. Gill claimed the golden gramophone trophy (the band’s first, his 21st), and on that same weekend in February, all three of the group’s fiddle players – Kenny Sears, Joe Spivey and Larry Franklin – were inducted into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame.

In December 2014, longtime Time Jumpers vocalist Dawn Sears, wife of Kenny, succumbed at age 53 after a two-year battle with lung cancer. Though her solo career in the ’90s never really caught fire, fans of her clarion tone and emotional heft rank her among the greatest country singers of all time.

She also toured with Gill as his go-to harmony singer for over 20 years. He wrote “Kid Sister” in her memory, and as reported, the country superstar got a bit...

emotional when he accepted his award at the Feb. 12 Grammy pretelecast ceremony.

“I wish you all would have had the chance once in your life to hear the voice of the woman I wrote this song about,” Gill said. “Her name was Dawn Sears. And on behalf of myself and the Time Jumpers, we got to perform a song that I wrote to honor her. It was one of the greatest thrills of my life. She’s one of the best voices you'll ever hear in your life. I encourage you to find her voice.”

"Kid Sister” is a classic country tearjerker, but the Time Jumpers’ true specialty is Western swing, a lively sound that filled the dancehalls of the Great Plains in the 1930s and ’40s.

Its best-known practitioners were Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, who melded many musical influences into 24

hits like “Steel Guitar Rag” and “New San Antonio Rose.” Imagine an East Coast big band with fiddles and twangy guitars supplanting the brass and winds.

To that end, The Time Jumpers are some of the best players in the business, with résumés almost too long to recount. Pedal steel guitarist Paul Franklin, for example, has recorded and/or toured with names like Barbara Mandrell, Jerry Reed, Mel Tillis, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Shania Twain, Barbara Streisand, Sting, Dire Straits’ Mark Knopfler and even thrash rockers Megadeth. Fiddler Larry Franklin (no relation) spent seven years with Asleep at the Wheel, toured with Willie Nelson and has recorded with Kenny Chesney, Grace Potter, Randy Travis, Alan Jackson, Loretta Lynn, Lee Ann Womack, Brian Wilson, Reba McEntire, Shania Twain and Lady Antebellum, among many others.

Rounding out the current Time Jumpers lineup are veteran players Brad Albin on upright bass, Billy Thomas on drums, Andy Reiss on electric guitar and Jeff Taylor on accordion and piano.

Bob Fjeldsted, president of the National Fiddler Hall of Fame in Tulsa, calls The Time Jumpers the “top Western swing band” in the country.

“The band has the top players in Nashville per instrument,” Fjeldsted told Oklahoma’s Grand Lake News.

“They have the top three fiddlers, top rhythm guitar and the top piano and accordion player.”

The band first came together in 1998 as a pastime for its busy and successful members, but it quickly developed a following of its own and landed a regular Monday night stand at the Station Inn, a popular bluegrass club. As word spread, celebrity guests began to drop by and sit in: Bonnie Raitt, Reba McEntire, Norah Jones, Robert Plant, Jimmy Buffet, etc. The weekly event moved to a larger Nashville nightspot called 3rd & Lindsley, where it continues to this day, hot enough to command a $20 cover charge.

The band’s rising profile is gratifying, Larry Franklin told the Grand Lake News, especially in light of their choice to focus on a classic style.

“It's nice for fiddlers and The Time Jumpers to get recognized,” he said.

“We try really hard to do what we do, as well as we can, in order to pay homage to our heroes that we learned from.”

Friday, March 24 at 8PM | The Tarkington Called “one of the greatest sitar players in the world” by Rolling Stone magazine, Anoushka Shankar comes to the Tarkington fresh from her sixth Grammy Award nomination.

After several acclaimed crossover albums – including 2013’s Traces of You with her half-sister Norah Jones – Shankar returned to her roots with Home, a pure Indian classical album and program that showcases the meditative and virtuosic qualities of the Indian raga. The project’s two ragas, one created by Anoushka’s father, Ravi Shankar, exemplify the nature of Indian music, which is not written but instead improvised and passed down through oral tradition.

As Ravi wrote in a treatise that accompanies the album, “a raga is the projection of the artist’s inner spirit, a manifestation of his most profound sentiments and sensibilities brought forth through tones and melodies. The musician must breathe life into each raga as he unfolds and expands it.”

For the self-produced project, Anoushka worked to capture the traditional instruments at an unprecedented level of quality, working with a team of experts to design a home studio uniquely suited to their timbre. In concert, she is accompanied by flute; shehnai, an oboe-like wind instrument; tanpura, a stringed drone instrument; the tabla hand drums; and other Indian percussion. With Home, she continues to explore fresh ways to reinterpret and keep alive the beautiful musical traditions of India.

In his rapid rise as a jazz pianist, Joey Alexander has released two acclaimed albums, received three Grammy nominations, toured the globe and been interviewed by Today, 60 Minutes, CNN and the New York Times – not bad for a 13-year-old.

Born in 2003 on the island of Bali, Alexander has been astounding audiences and industry professionals alike for years with his amazing chops and mature interpretations of classic compositions by the likes of John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk and Rodgers and Hammerstein. The attention heated up in 2014, when he made his U.S. debut at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall at the invitation of Wynton Marsalis. The following year, at age 12, he brought the audience to its feet as the youngest musician ever to perform at the prestigious Newport Jazz Festival.

Alexander’s 2015 debut album, My Favorite Things, picked up two Grammy Award nominations for Best Jazz Instrumental Album and Best Improvised Jazz Solo, making him the youngest jazz artist ever nominated for a Grammy. He again earned standing ovations with his performances on the 2016 Grammy Awards broadcast. He scored another Best Improvised Jazz Solo nomination at this year’s Grammys for work on his sophomore release, Countdown, which showcases his development as a bandleader and composer.

Keith Lockhart, Conductor Having celebrated his 20th anniversary as Boston Pops Conductor in 2015, Keith Lockhart is the second longest-tenured conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra since its founding in 1885. He took over as conductor in 1995, following John Williams’ 13-year tenure from 1980 to 1993; Williams succeeded the legendary Arthur Fiedler, who was at the helm of the orchestra for nearly 50 years. Keith Lockhart has conducted nearly 1,800 Boston Pops concerts, most during the orchestra’s spring and holiday seasons in Boston’s historic Symphony Hall. He has also led annual Boston Pops appearances at Tanglewood, 40 national tours to 134 cities in 33 states, and four international tours to Japan and Korea.

In addition to occupying the Julian and Eunice Cohen Boston Pops Conductor chair, Keith Lockhart currently serves as principal conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra in London, which he led in the June 2012 Diamond Jubilee Concert for Queen Elizabeth II, and as artistic director of the Brevard Music Center summer institute and festival in North Carolina. Prior to his BBC appointment, he spent 11 years as music director of the Utah Symphony, which he led at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. He has appeared as a guest conductor with virtually every major symphonic ensemble in North America, as well as several in Asia and Europe.

Prior to coming to Boston, he was the associate conductor of both the Cincinnati Symphony and Cincinnati Pops orchestras, as well as music director of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. Born in Poughkeepsie, NY, Keith Lockhart began his musical studies with piano lessons at the age of 7.

He holds degrees from Furman University and Carnegie Mellon University, as well as honorary doctorates from several American universities.

Michael Chertock, pianist Pianist Michael Chertock has fashioned a successful career as an orchestral soloist, collaborating with conductors such as James Conlon, Jaime Laredo, Keith Lockhart, Erich Kunzel and Andrew Litton. His orchestral appearances include solo performances with many of the nation’s leading orchestras.

He performs frequently overseas, and has won accolades with his performances in Great Britain, Germany, Japan and Korea.

Chertock made his concert debut at the age of 17, performing the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 with Andrew Litton conducting. His Carnegie Hall debut came in 1999 with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, performing Duke Ellington’s New World A-Comin’. In June 2005 with the Boston Pops Orchestra, Chertock performed the world premiere of a work by Todd Machover, commissioned by the Boston Pops expressly for Chertock.

Chertock serves as chair of the keyboard division at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, where he received his master’s degree. He has garnered numerous awards at major competitions, among them the top prize in the 1989 Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition (Brahms Division,) and the grand prize in the 1993 St. Charles International Piano Competition.

Since 1994, Chertock has released four albums on the Telarc label: Cinematic Piano, Palace of the Winds, Christmas at the Movies and Love at the Movies, which have been praised for their lush, original arrangements and exquisite technical facility.

Justin Hopkins, vocalist Bass-baritone Justin Hopkins is a young performer in increasing demand nationally and internationally. Known for his warm and rich bass voice, as well as his magnetic stage presence, he has been featured in such concert halls and theaters as Carnegie Hall, Symphony Hall in Boston, Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Brussels.

A versatile artist, Hopkins has performed operatic roles ranging from Mozart to Philip Glass, as well as solo concert repertoire including Britten’s War Requiem and Mendelssohn’s Elijah. He has performed under the distinguished batons of such conductors as Keith Lockhart, Charles Dutoit and Valery Gergiev, and with orchestras including the Philadelphia Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Boston Pops, American Symphony Orchestra and Verbier Festival Orchestra.

Hopkins has performed for numerous dignitaries and heads of state, most notably a command solo performance in 2009 for the Dalai Lama. He took second place in the 2012 Lotte Lenya Competition.

Erica Spyres, vocalist Lauded by the Boston Globe for her “uncommon versatility” and “vividly memorable performances," Erica Spyres is a multiple award-winning actor, singer and violinist. In 2016, she made her successful debut at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris as Clara in Passion, alongside Natalie Dessay under the baton of Andy Einhorn. Prior to that, she sang, fiddled and danced across the U.S., Canada and Japan as Ex-Girlfriend in the First National Tour of the Broadway musical Once.

Regional theater credits include Pirates! at the Huntington Theatre Company; Tribes (Elliot Norton Award) and The Light in the Piazza (IRNE Award) at SpeakEasy Stage Company; Avenue Q (IRNE Award), Company, Into the Woods, Time Stands Still, The Mikado, Nicholas Nickleby and Big River at the Lyric Stage Company of Boston; Camelot (IRNE Award), Master Class and Marry Me a Little at the New Repertory Theatre; and A Little Night Music at Springfield Regional Opera.

Few music careers are as enduring and wide-ranging as that of saxophonistcomposer Charles Lloyd, and few musicians continue to push the boundaries of jazz so consistently after six decades in the business.

As a teen in the 1950s, the Memphis-born Lloyd played sideman to such blues greats as Howlin’ Wolf and B.B. King and later made a name on the L.A. jazz scene among the likes of Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy.

In the ’60s, he spent two years with Cannonball Adderley’s band, began recording as a bandleader, and became one of the first jazz artists to cross the 1 million mark in album sales (Forest Flower: Live at Monterey) and the first jazz artist to play San Francisco’s legendary Fillmore Auditorium.

Known for incorporating non-Western influences and cultivating young talent in his combos, Lloyd even dabbled in rock with the Beach Boys and other bands before plunging back into jazz in the late ’80s. He has since released more than a dozen albums and continues to tour widely. Recent honors have included the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 2014 Jazz Legend Award and the National Endowment for the Arts’ 2015 Jazz Master Fellowship.

Lloyd’s current project, Charles Lloyd & the Marvels, is a characteristically unusual ensemble with Reuben Rogers on bass, Eric Harland on drums, sought-after session man Greg Leisz on pedal steel guitar and Bill Frisell – himself a legend in jazz, folk and rock circles – on guitar. Their 2016 album I Long to See You reinvents familiar folk and pop melodies and features Willie Nelson and Norah Jones as special guests.

Laura Bates’ book, Shakespeare Saved My Life: Ten Years in Solitary with the Bard, demonstrates the incredible transformative power of the arts, even for those who society has deemed unable to rehabilitate. THE TIME JUMPERS FEATURING VINCE GILL, KENNY SEARS, AND PAUL FRANKLIN Friday, April 28 at 8pm | The Palladium On the heels of their first Grammy Award, the Nashville all-stars known as The Time Jumpers are bringing their updated take on Western swing music to the Palladium.

With country hitmaker Vince Gill on guitars and vocals, this 10-member team of veteran session players has been a sensation in Music City nightclubs for over a decade. They recreate sounds heard in the dance halls of the Great Plains during the 1930s and ’40s, when string bands led by fiddles and steel guitar put a twangy spin on big band music.

In addition to Gill, other band members include Paul Franklin (steel guitar), Brad Albin (upright bass), Billy Thomas (drums, vocals), Kenny Sears (vocals, fiddle), Larry Franklin (fiddle), Andy Reiss (electric guitar), Jeff Taylor (accordion, piano) and Joe Spivey (fiddle, vocals).

The band received two Grammy nominations this year, bringing their total to six. Their album Kid Sister was a contender for the Best Americana Album title, and Gill claimed top honors in the Best American Roots Song category for writing the album’s title song.

A home for world-class entertainment, the Center for the Performing Arts is a non-profit educational, arts and cultural organization that operates a 3-venue performing arts campus. Accessible Parking: Accessible parking is available on the Center Green’s loop driveway, just south of the Palladium. Additional accessible valet parking is available at the west entrance on 3rd Avenue.

Arrival: Street level and elevator access is available in the Palladium’s West Lobby located at the 3rd Avenue entrance and is also available in the East Lobby located near the Monon Greenway.

Seating: Wheelchair accessible seating is located in various sections of the venues. Special seating arrangements may be made in advance by calling the box office at 317.843.3800.

PARKING

Valet: Beginning 1 hour before the performance time, valet parking is available on the Center Green’s loop driveway, at the Palladium’s south entrance. The valet service is sponsored by Land Rover Indianapolis & Jaguar Indianapolis.

The valet service is $15 or is complimentary for Jaguars and Land Rovers. Valet is only available for Center Presents performances at the Palladium.

Self-Park: Secure, on-site garage parking is located south of the Palladium.

RESTROOMS

Restrooms are located in the lower Salon level, Payne & Mencias Box Tier and Gallery level of the Palladium, and on the first floor in the lobby of the Studio Theater and the Tarkington (all restrooms are handicap accessible.)

COAT CHECK

Coat check services are available on a seasonal basis at the west side of the lower Salon level near the restrooms at the Palladium. Coat room facilities are also available at the Tarkington and the Studio Theater.

FOOD & BEVERAGE

Concessions are available before the performance through intermission.

Food is not permitted in the theaters. Beverages purchased at the Center are allowed in the theaters.

ELLA SINGS THE SONGBOOK

Ella Sings the Songbook includes historic photos, sheet music, magazines and other artifacts, some gleaned from the Songbook Archives and others on loan from the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation. Marking 100 years since the birth of America’s “First Lady of Song,” the exhibit focuses on a celebrated series of eight albums recorded for Verve Records in the 1950s and ’60s, when the respected jazz singer took a new and highly successful direction interpreting works by the most beloved composers of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway and Hollywood: Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer.
