BY THE NUMBERS This season, the Center for the Performing Arts welcomed its 1 millionth guest. From world-class performances to inspiring educational experiences, the Center is pleased to serve as a gathering place for the Central Indiana community.

The Center for the Performing Arts:

• Welcomed 343,950 visitors to its campus during

The mission of the Center is to ENGAGE and INSPIRE the Central Indiana community through enriching arts experiences.

Dear friends, I am very pleased to share with you this summary of our 2017/2018 fiscal year, the seventh full season of performances and programs presented by the Center for the Performing Arts. By all measures, this recently concluded season saw significant milestones and high-water marks in our mission to enrich this Central Indiana community we call home.

The performances of the season represented the most diverse spectrum of artists yet presented on our three stages. From living legends Itzhak Perlman and David Crosby to such renowned ensembles as the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet and Canadian Brass to electric acts like Evanescence, Pink Martini and Straight No Chaser, many magical moments were savored by the more than 100,000 patrons who attended our events.

Education and outreach initiatives have always been at the heart of our mission, and I am especially proud of the breadth of these life-affirming programs. With offerings that include our Jungle Jams camp and Peanut Butter & Jam concerts for children, the KAR Front Seat program for high school and college music students, and adult classes in vocal performance, dance, standup comedy and even ukulele, we are committed to offering unique, high-quality opportunities for all ages.

As you will see in this report, the business of the arts is thriving. At the core of our mission is an unwavering dedication to arts, culture and entertainment, resting on a solid foundation of financial stability. With a growing base of subscribers and individual ticket buyers, plus a generous and expanding pool of individual donors, corporate sponsors and foundation partners, the Center is well-positioned for continued service to you, our community, for generations to come.

WORLD-CLASS PERFORMANCES

The Center for the Performing Arts is home to three performance venues: The 1,600-seat Palladium concert hall, the 500-seat Tarkington proscenium theater, and the 200-seat black box Studio Theater. More than 105,000 patrons attended performances and events in these three venues during the 2017/2018 season.

Among the performances at the Center, were 47 concerts offered through Center Presents, our season of diverse arts experiences. The season included classical music from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Pinchas Zukerman, jazz diva Diana Krall, pop icons Evanescence and Postmodern Jukebox, country legends The Oak Ridge Boys and family-friendly programming.

THE CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS A REGIONAL ASSET The arts are for everyone. As home to the Great American Songbook Foundation, Actors Theatre of Indiana, Carmel Symphony Orchestra, Central Indiana Dance Ensemble, Civic Theatre, Indiana Wind Symphony and Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre, the Center for the Performing Arts serves as an incubator for new arts experiences, while curating cultural classics and timeless favorites.

The breadth of programming presented at the Center for the Performing Arts spans not only artistic genres, but also the wide-ranging demographics of the entire region.

Whether engaging returning consumers of the arts or welcoming first-time attendees to the campus, our programming vision and hospitality strategies focus on building repeat attendance for the benefit of the community we serve and the ongoing success of this institution.

Did you know that?

• Total attendance increased 1.5% over the previous season • First-time attendees represented 37% of attendance • Of the 47 performances in the Center Presents series, 14 attracted sold-out audiences The top-five Indiana counties represented by ticket sales in 2017/2018 were Hamilton, Marion, Hancock, Hendricks, and Howard.

FOR CHILDREN & YOUTH

Educational experiences for young people open windows to the world and add to what might be possible. The arts build bridges. The arts build leaders. The arts develop tomorrow’s parents, teachers, entrepreneurs, innovators and thought leaders.

The Center for the Performing Arts champions arts education experiences for children and youth. Programs like Peanut Butter & Jam, Science of Light & Sound, KAR Front Seat and Jungle Jams reached more than 4,600 children and youth through targeted educational programming during the 2017/2018 season.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela Jungle Jams: Summer camp for kids blends expression, communication and self-esteem development with music and the arts. We even invite the entire family to be a part of the experience for cross-generational development!

KAR Front Seat: High school and college students interact with some of the world’s greatest musicians during rehearsal, Q&A and concert attendance. Inspiring creativity in the next generation!

Science of Light & Sound: STEM education comes to life through our very own audio and lighting engineers.

Aligns with Department of Education standards for third graders throughout the community.

Peanut Butter & Jam: For kids ages 1-7, PB&J engages children and their parents in the arts through music, dance and creative expression. Saturday mornings at the Palladium.

LIFELONG LEARNING

Education doesn’t end with high school graduation or college commencement. Instead, communities are strengthened, relationships fostered, and physical and mental health improve when education continues across the decades. The arts are an effective tool for lifelong discovery and growth.

“When the opportunity for ukulele lessons at the Center was offered, I signed up. Geoff Davis, through his lessons and encouragement, has given me confidence to challenge myself and continue to move forward in my own music journey.”

- Patti Washburn More than 1,500 adults were served through lifelong learning programs at the Center for the Performing Arts, and 560 seniors participated in initiatives catering specifically to those in the golden years of life.

Ukulele Classes Whether beginning to explore a musical instrument as an adult, or feeling the desire to dust off your musical skills, these weekly classes leverage the uniquely American instrument to explore rhythm, singing, chords and repertoire. An excellent opportunity to connect with others from throughout the community.

Dance Discovery Classes There’s no such thing as two left feet, and these diverse and varied dance classes span the gamut.

With dance styles ranging from soft shoe and swing to hip hop and hula, each session provides a brief overview of the genre before getting participants up and on their feet.

Classics in Context Why did Beethoven pen only nine symphonies, but Mozart wrote seven times as many? Delve into the stoires behind the music at these free discussions offered before every classical series performance.

SONGBOOK CELEBRATION

Each year the Center hosts the Songbook Celebration presented by Krieg DeVault, a gala event that raises funds to support our artistic and educational programs. Located within the Palladium on the Festival Floor, the event is successful thanks to the generosity of corporate partners and individual donors.

The 2017 Songbook Celebration on Saturday, September 30, 2017, raised $299,400 to support programs for children, youth and adults alike. This represents a nearly 23% increase over the previous year. Beyond raising financial support, the event also includes a headline performance and induction of American music legends into the Songbook Hall of Fame.

PHILANTHROPY

At the heart of an arts and cultural institution’s success is an unwavering commitment to its mission. The core of all success depends on high quality, enriching arts experiences. At the same time, a base of philanthropic support is required to bring that mission to life.

Enter the individual donor. Cue-up the corporate partner. Bring to the stage the grant-making foundation.

With an annual operating budget of slightly more than $9 million in the 2017/2018 season, ticket sales and other earned revenue comprised 46% of the income needed to present world-class performances and important educational programming. Philanthropic giving is essential for the Center for the Performing Arts to present these performances and programs at accessible price points – and the vast majority of educational programming is offered free of charge.

Net revenue from the Songbook Celebration gala reached an all-time high, surpassing the previous year by 23%.

Charitable giving to the Center represented 17% of overall income for fiscal year 2018.
