NEW ALL-IN-ONE OWNER’S APP Hyundai is debuting a new mobile app for owners called MyHyundai with Blue Link. The new app integrates services currently available in the previously separate Blue Link and Car Care mobile apps. This MyHyundai app makes it even easier for customers to access Blue Link remote start, schedule service, get vehicle diagnostics and view how-to videos similar to how they can use the MyHyundai.com owner website.

It will have additional features in the future. Compatible with smartphones and tablets, the MyHyundai app is available for free download on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

Currently, owners can manage their Blue Link account, along with tracking vehicle service history, scheduling maintenance and checking vehicle information on MyHyundai.com.

To access the full set of app features, users will need to activate their Blue Link service with the remote package. Customers without a current Blue Link subscription can get a demonstration of the Blue Link remote features inside the MyHyundai app.

ROTARY Fights Hunger By: Maureen Kelly Raso

I am pleased to announce that on November 5th 2016, I will be the co-chairperson for a “STOP HUNGER NOW” meal packing event with Rotary District 7500 in Ocean County.

Every day 25,000 people die from hunger and hunger-related causes. Supplying a sustainable school feeding program in a developing country can double or triple enrollment. Education is proven to provide a way out of poverty and to decrease birth and infant mortality rates. These food packaging events have made a considerable difference in the lives of school children and malnourished in over 30 developing countries.

Please join me and my Rotary district in the movement to end hunger in our lifetime! Help us reach our goal to package 20,088 + meals. Working together we can create a world without hunger.

Volunteers needed, according to Stop Hunger Now, 40-50 people can pack 10,0000 meals in two hours. We therefore project we will need 80-100 volunteers to work two hour shifts (9-11 and 11:301:30) to pack 20,088 meals. Also we will need 10-12 strong individuals that can help unpack the truck at delivery from 7:30 to 8:30am.

Our goal is to raise $5,825.00, and package 20,088 meals. Each meal cost 29 cents, each package contains 6 meals $1.74. Every box is 216 meals or $62.64. So we can go up by box count. The sky is the limit!

The journey continues. While I was on a quick business trip to Burlington Vermont, My wife and I took a quick bike ride along Lake Champlain. It gave the bug to buy my own road bike. I quickly purchased a racing bike, and all needed accessories.

One morning in spin class Lisa mentioned that she and two class members were doing the LBI Triathlon/Duathlon next month. Rose once again said “You should join us for the Triathlon event”. I replied “well I’m a bit rusty as a swimmer”. “No Yours truly at the finish and in transition between bike and final run leg problem. Thanks to Rose, Lisa and Sabrina, Ocean Club pressed into registering. The week before the LBI Tri/DU event, as I arrived for the Monday 6:30 spin and my biggest fan and supporter my wife Donna for class, Sabrina Burnaford, fellow spin class member, helping me to continue my fitness journey.

2015 Trophy winners Brielle Elementary school

The Federation of New Jersey Food Banks challenges all students, staff, teachers and parents to think of those less fortunate throughout the school year by organizing a food drive at their school, beginning in Monday, September 19 through Monday, December 12. New Jersey schools will compete with each other to collect as much food as possible for their local food bank. At the end of the challenge, the schools that bring the most food will be presented with awards by their local food bank.

It was a record year in 2015, with a total of 235 schools participating statewide, gathering 174,023 pounds of food and over $44,000 in monetary contributions!

Students Change Hunger is a statewide school food drive competition. The challenge gives students, parents, teachers and staff an opportunity to help those less fortunate during the holiday season.

Schools are categorized by the size of their student

population. The schools then compete to collect as much food as possible for their local food bank. The schools that bring in the most food in their division are given special awards at the end of the competition.

In addition, one school is given the top prize, the Governor’s Cup. The Governor’s Cup, endorsed by Governor Chris Christie, is awarded for school spirit, advocacy, and active participation throughout the competition.

Students Change Hunger 2016 will start on Monday, September 19 and extend through Monday, December 12. It’s early, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start collecting now!

FORD ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO EXPLORE STEAM FIELDS, PROVIDING INSPIRATION WITH GIRLS’ FAST TRACK RACES

Ford Motor Company is collaborating with four Girl Scouts Councils – Tropical Florida, Southeastern Michigan, Northeast Texas and Northern New Jersey – on a program that offers avenues for elementary school students to explore STEAM-related fields in science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

Girls’ Fast Track Races is providing handson experience in vehicle engineering and design to 200 Brownies and 200 Juniors from each of the participating councils. Through the program, young girls are given the opportunity to learn about automotive science and engineering by building their own track race cars.

“We believe that all young children have an aptitude for technical subjects – what’s often lacking is the encouragement and additional support to succeed,” said Tracy Magee, Ford primary brand experiential manager. “Ford is deeply committed to education and through creative programs such as the Girls’ Fast Track Races, we hope to spark excitement among the youth and inspire them to pursue future careers in high-tech fields.”

Ford’s newly launched STEAM Experience works with longstanding Ford programs and outside organizations to help unify, shine a light on, and expand opportunities that inspire and enable students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, art and math. It serves as a hub for creativity and learning.

Girls’ Fast Track Races – one of the many Ford STEAM Experience programs - is designed to

provide encouragement and motivation to the four participating councils as they work to build and race their own cars. A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK AT MANUFACTURING THE NISSAN TITAN XD

Since its introduction in 2003, the Nissan TITAN has been built in one place – Canton, Mississippi, a town north of the state capital and home to about 13,000.

A white Nissan water tower dots the sky above Canton, while the sprawling 4.7 million-square-foot plant – the Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant – just off the main highway has a staff of 6,400 working on its more than 1,000 acres.

In many ways, the mighty truck’s history is the plant’s own story, and staff refer to the vehicle like no other produced there, proudly calling it “Canton’s TITAN.” “All TITANs made have come out of this plant,” said chief engineer Erik Fields. “The new Titan XD gives pride because we’ve been able to see something grow.”

To accommodate production of the latest edition of the TITAN, factory lines were modified to accommodate the sheer size and weight of the new truck, which comes in multiple sizes, engines, colors and technological specifications.

Canton has produced over 3 million vehicles in its history, including the Nissan TITAN, Murano, Altima, Armada and Frontier.

The new TITAN, however, has an even more complex and rigorous build process, meaning up to 16 hours are required in the metamorphosis from coiled steel to ready-to-drive wheels that are loaded onto a semi truck before delivery to dealerships and

Hunger and food insecurity continue to be significant problems globally, nationally, and right here in our own community. In New Jersey, one in five children are not sure where their next meal is coming from, and approximately 165,500 elderly and disabled residents rely on food assistance.

The Hunger Foundation of Southern Ocean (HFOSO.org) has a 20-year history of working in the community to provide much needed financial support to local food banks through fundraising events and donations. Their mission statement reads: “We are a local, all volunteer non-profit organization with a mission to support local food pantries as they assist our residents with their basic food needs, and to help educate the public of the basic food needs of individuals and families in our area.”

Food pantries always have trouble keeping up, and often their shelves are almost empty. Food drives and donations help to supply food pantries, and typically focus on non-perishables for obvious reasons. Still, fresh foods such as fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet and should be provided alongside canned and boxed goods whenever possible.

In addition to their fundraising events held throughout the year, the Hunger Foundation helps local food pantries through the Stafford Community Garden at Lake Manahawkin. It is the hope of the Hunger Foundation that the Community Garden will promote involvement and increase awareness about the ever-growing need for hunger relief right here in our backyards. This grassroots project also provides fresh, locally grown produce to those in need of food assistance in the community.

While donations are necessary to support the garden, volunteers are vitally important as well. After all, what good are seeds and fertilizer if there is no one to plant the seeds and tend their growth? Volunteers of all ages are always welcome, from children to

retirees. Hands-on learning about composting, rain barrel water conservation, and more takes place while volunteers enjoy fresh air, sunshine, and community connections.

Without diminishing the ultimate goal of feeding those in need, the Community Garden offers many recreational and educational opportunities for the community as well. Volunteering in the garden is a wonderful group activity for local community groups like the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and other clubs and civic organizations.

Recreation programs, such as Spring Work Days, Fall Mulch Workshops, Fall Clean Ups, and summer camp day trips bring old and young together, actively building community.

While the Hunger Foundation supports the Community Garden through various fundraising efforts throughout the year, the financial cost of the garden is kept low through the use of repurposed materials and, of course, the work of volunteers. It cannot be

Numbers Rise As Vehicle Excitement Builds

The highly anticipated, all-new Lincoln Continental will be part of The Lincoln Motor Company’s national philanthropic campaign this fall, helping raise money for educational and charitable organizations.

Driven to Give, a philanthropic program that began in 2011 as a way for Lincoln dealers to work with nonprofit organizations and give back to their communities, has raised more $6.2 million since its inception and $1.5 million last year alone.

The program allows Lincoln dealers across the country to give back to their communities by working with schools and charitable organizations; it continues to increase in popularity as anticipation builds around Lincoln’s lineup of vehicles.

“We’re proud that we’re able to contribute to these causes,” said John Emmert, Lincoln group marketing manager. “And we’re excited that people will have the opportunity to

drive our vehicles, particularly the allnew Lincoln Continental.”

Here’s how the campaign works: Dealerships work with local groups to host a one-day event. For each participant that test-drives an eligible Lincoln vehicle, Lincoln donates $20 to the organization. Additional test drives in designated bonus vehicles earn a supplementary $20 donation, meaning a single participant can raise up to $40 for their organization.

OUR #1 FAVORITE: PUMPKIN BREAD Yields: Two 8½x4½-inch loaves Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 1 hour Total time: 1 hour 10 minutes INGREDIENTS: 3-1/3 cups all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon baking powder 2 teaspoons baking soda 1½ teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 cup vegetable oil 2-2/3 cups granulated sugar 4 eggs 2 cups (15 ounces) canned pumpkin 2/3 cup water 1 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 cup chopped pecans (or walnuts) DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease two 8½x4½-inch loaf pans.

2. In a medium bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and nutmeg; set aside.

3. In a large bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil and sugar until combined. Add the eggs, pumpkin, water and vanilla and whisk until thoroughly

combined and smooth. Add the dry ingredients and mix gently until combined. Using a large spoon or spatula, stir in the nuts.

4.Divide the batter evenly between the two pans and bake for 60 to 80 minutes, or until a thin knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

5. Remove the bread from the oven and place the pans on a cooling rack. Once the breads are completely cool, turn out of the pans. You can serve immediately or, for even better flavor and moistness, wrap the loaves in plastic wrap and store at room temperature overnight.

Stacy Kendro is the 2016 Ladies of Laughter Professional Runner-up. Stacy is a Las Vegas favorite at Planet Hollywood’s Sin City Comedy Club. HYUNDAI INTRODUCES “PRIME NOW. DRIVE NOW.” Hyundai Motor America, in collaboration with Amazon, announces a limited-time, first-to-market on-demand vehicle test drive program, “Prime Now. Drive Now.,” in which prospective buyers in the Los Angeles/Orange County areas can book 2017 Hyundai Elantra test drives at the location of their choice through Amazon’s Prime Now service at www.amazon.com/primenowdrivenow. Launched in 2014, Prime Now is a way for Prime members in more than 25 metropolitan areas in the U.S. to get quick delivery on tens of thousands of items.

“Prime Now. Drive Now.” will run for two weekends (August 20-21 and August 27-28) and is available to Los Angeles/Orange County-area residents in the market for a 2017 Hyundai Elantra.

CANCER… What is the first thing that comes to mind when you see or hear that word? Everyone will have a different answer, and even though those answers are all different, we can all agree the word cancer is a small word that leaves a great impact on hearts and lives of many.

Twenty years ago, my family lost a very special woman. On June 4, 1996, at the young age of 36, my Aunt Jeananne passed away after a courageous battle with Breast Cancer. Anyone that knew her would say she was the life of the party, a fashionista, free spirit, gold hearted, a light-up-the-room type of person, who was taken way too soon. And like I said, cancer leaves a great impact. For me, I am sad to say that I never had the opportunity to make memories with an awesome woman, all because of that little word.

For my mom, she lost a sister and best friend. For my sister, she lost her aunt, god mother, and role model.

Luckily I have my mother and sister to remind me what an amazing soul she was, how much she loved, and how much I remind them of her.

We stumbled across The American Cancer Society’s event - Making Strides against Breast Cancer, on my Aunt’s 10 year anniversary. We decided we wanted to do something to honor her, to give us closure, and be able to share stories.

That Sunday was difficult, with just the three of us conquering a bucket of emotions in a sea of people,

My husband and I dined at Maneras on September 22nd arriving around 6:45 without a reservation. The host was able to seat us within 10 minutes even though they were quite busy. For a Thursday night this place was quite lively (and a bit loud). Our server, Priscilla, was very helpful and nice. We split a grilled veggie and mozzerella cheese appetizer which was light and refreshing. For our meal we split the 14 ounce pork chop! It was succulent, tender, juicy and simply delicious!! It came with mashed potatoes and grilled broccolini. Upon waiting for the dessert menu a table nearby offered us some of their birthday cake so that was a plus!! You do have to wait a little for your food but it is all fresh and made to order so it’s worth the wait! This is a BYOB establishment. In a strip mall but definitely worth the visit if you are in town!!

 “Best Pizza in Manahawkin and LBI Area” I’ll keep it simple. The pizza is the best in the area. The staff and service was excellent. The prices are reasonable and its BYOB. Nice place. It’s busy inside and take out is busy too. Call ahead. It’s just past Old Causeway on East Bay Ave in a shopping plaza. But, you should definitely take the trip off LBI for Pietros..

We passed this place many times on our way into LBI and finally stopped in for lunch. Glad we did atmosphere was nice with friendly staff. They have a $10 lunch special that was well worth it. Save room for dessert. Definitely will be trying a dinner some night soon.

“A Surprising Find - Great Food” I read about Exit 63 seafood when looking for restaurants and added it to my list of places to try. We drove right by it a few times as we weren’t expecting a fishmonger. The place is small. When you go in - to the right, you can buy fresh seafood . It is a seafood store. But take the door to the right and there is a pleasant surprise. It is a nice small restaurant with a few tables. The service is great and the seafood is wonderful and fresh. we had fried calamari which was great and all of our seafood dishes were perfect. Don’t go by the first impression when you pull up. We almost turned around and left. Give it a try.

I usually never go and do a review for any place I go out to but this place was so good I just couldn’t keep it to myself and wanted to tell everybody about it. I went there for lunch to try it out and then I actually went back the next day for dinner! Th chicken paninis are very good and they have a special pink sauce that it is to die for. Their wood fired pizza is the real deal not like other places that claim to have wood fired. They have daily specials on top of their extensive menu and there is something for everyone you def will not leave hungry or unhappy!!

A definate yes if the words leave my lips to go to Makoto. The chefs always change it up a bit although the food is so good the show is just an added benefit to the meal you are about to eat. The sushi is always fresh and delicious, the meat is lean and cooked just the way you like it. The portions are so huge its well worth the price you pay. A filet and shrimp meals with fried rice, noodles, vegetables, soup and salad for under $20 plus youll have leftovers for 2 days. Absolutely a family favorite.

“A Sub Place That Is Worth The Trip!”

Most Italian restaurants in the area are same old, same old. The subs have the same low taste level meats and cheeses plus watery lettuce. Not at any Jersey Mike’s I have ever been to. The franchising company must inspect their franchise stores frequently since the stores hold to the company standard very well.

The sandwiches are top shelf. A full sub is large enough to get it cut into 4 pieces with each piece wrapped separately. The meats and cheeses are excellent. The steaks are the best in the area. Both the subs and steaks are a real handful. You get both quality and value here.

This particular store does not have the most easy to find location though.

EARLY/MID-OCTOBER Woodlands Tour (map): Begin in Riverdale and travel through Wanaque and Midvale, past the commanding Wanaque Reservoir. Continue to Ringwood, full of numerous stops to hold your interest. Ringwood State Park, which includes Norvin Green Forest and Shepherd Lake, is a spectacular sight in the fall. Walk the hiking and nature trails, rent a canoe or just sit and enjoy the scenery. Tour Ringwood Manor, a 51-room mansion with period furniture that was home to early ironmasters in the 1700s. The New Jersey Botanical Gardens is in full bloom at Skylands Manor, brimming with 90 acres of gardens and natural areas.

his famous Christmas Day crossing of the Delaware River in 1776. The park brims with bridle paths, hiking and nature trails, a nature center and playground, all dotted along the Delaware River. From Titusville head east to Pennington, a quaint town with lovely shops. Take Rt. 31 North past several scenic wildlife management areas to Ringoes, where the Black River and Western Railroad offers a scenic train ride. While you’re there, sip and sample wines while taking in the charming views of vineyards and farmland at Old York Cellars Winery or Unionville Vineyards. From Ringoes, go through Sergeantsville and drive on the state’s oldest covered bridge, the Green Sergeants Bridge.

Next visit Stockton, a lovely historic town with fine restaurants and antique shops. Here, the Bull’s Island section of the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park offers fishing, canoeing, boating, hiking and nature trails. Then, head south and follow along the scenic Delaware River through Lambertville.

Stop here to enjoy the many antique shops, flea markets, art galleries and fine restaurants. From Lambertville, travel south back to Titusville.

LATE OCTOBER/EARLY NOVEMBER

Pinelands Tour (map): Begin at Red Lion Circle (intersection of Rts. 206 & 70) and travel south through Atsion to Atsion Recreation Area, great for boating, camping, fishing and swimming. Near Hammonton, head east to Wharton State Forest, the largest in the state. Wharton is the ideal place for boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking, nature walks, hunting, camping and horseback riding. The foliage is breathtaking!

Historic Tour (map): This varied tour will take you through New Jersey’s beautiful copper-covered scenery, as well as to historic sites and a castle with a theater. Begin your trip in Netcong, near New Jersey’s largest lake, Lake Hopatcong, to view the magnificent foliage. Nearby is Waterloo Village in Stanhope, a restored 19th-century village featuring unique shops, historic tours and festivals. Travel to Andover and enjoy the beautiful fall scenery in Allamuchy Mountain State Park.

Stop and walk the park’s hiking trails, or enjoy a family picnic.

The park is also a great place to camp and fish.

From Millville, head north and visit nearby Bridgeton, the site of the state’s largest historic district with more than 2,000 preserved Victorian, Colonial and Federalists buildings, a zoo and a Swedish farmstead. Guided tours are available. Travel through Centerton and Olivet to nearby Elmer, the site of picturesque Parvin State Park, where you can walk along the shoreline of Parvin Lake and take in sprawling views of the surrounding red and orange trees. Nearby, the Appel Farm Arts and Music Center features year-round concerts and theatrical performances. From there return to Buena Vista.

PROGRESS REPORT: NFC EAST By: Chad Scanlon

One of the best aspects of the NFL is how seldom the outcome of the regular season matches the expectations of the preseason. It’s the 17-week regular season. It’s a league full of injuries. And it’s the idea that on “any given Sunday,” any team has a chance to win.

That’s what makes this league so special. Fortunately for those of us in the Tri-State Area, the NFC East is a perfect microcosm of the exciting world of the NFL. As of this writing, weeks 1 and 2 are in the books, and the NFC East surely isn’t where the experts thought it would be.

The Giants are 2-0, and their offense hasn’t even shown up yet. Eli is one of the league’s top-rated passers with a 73.9% completion percentage, yet Odell Beckham Jr. has yet to reach the end zone. Victor Cruz has already added some much needed aerial support for Eli and co, but this would-be explosive offense has yet to find its spark.

Defensively, the deft moves made by the front office in the offseason are paying off. Ranked #9 overall, they held Drew Brees and the Saints to a pedestrian 13 points.

The Eagles sit at 2-0 also, with both a top-5 defense and the unexpected poise of Carson Wentz leading the way. If NFL positions were table games in a casino, then rookie quarterbacks would have the worst odds. The 2nd overall pick in this year’s draft seems to have been worth the bet.

He has 3 touchdowns over 2 games without an interception.

While the season is early and the sample size small, Wentz has shown the intangible qualities needed to be an effective leader on the field. Under the tutelage of former quarterback and new head coach Doug Pederson, the Eagles’ future looks promising.

The Dallas Cowboys were considered one of the likely contenders to lead this division. With a healthy Tony Romo and fresh legs in rookie running back Ezekiel Elliot, it looked as if the Cowboy offense was finally set up for success.

Unfortunately, but somewhat predictably, Romo suffered an injury during preseason. Ezekiel Elliot has been productive,

and Pro Bowl wide receiver Dez Bryant is always a scoring threat, but the biggest surprise has been the performance of 4th round pick, rookie quarterback Dak Prescott. His stats aren’t flashy, but he has shown confidence in the pocket without committing any turnovers. Dallas’ defense hasn’t exactly turned any heads, but they’re also playing without a handful of their starters, 3 of whom were suspended in the offseason. At 1-1 and 3rd place in the division, they are holding their own despite the depletion of starters.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the 0-2 record of the Washington Redskins, who won the division in 2015, and were heavily favored to repeat that performance.

Both losses came at home, the second of which was a heartbreaking, 4-point deficit against divisional foe Dallas Cowboys. Questions abound about the efficacy of Kirk Cousins, who earned himself a hefty raise after a stellar performance in 2015. They have no shortage of offensive weapons, from Cousins to Desean Jackson and Pro Bowl tight end Jordan Reed. Head Coach Jay Gruden hasn’t been pulling any punches, heavily critiquing all facets of the team’s performance.

The standings aren’t where most experts thought they’d be, but it’s still early enough for anything to happen. While this may be true for every division in the NFL, the NFC East is arguably the best example. And since you asked, my money is on the Eagles to win the division. That’s an unbiased opinion, mind you. I’m a 49ers fan and we’re not playing the NFC East this year.

Long Beach Twp., NJ 08008 BRANT BEACH – The 44th Annual Long Beach Island Commemorative 18 Mile Run will take place on Sunday, October 9 and begins at 10:30 a.m. in Holgate, the southernmost point of LBI. Participants will run north on Long Beach Blvd. for 18 miles and finish at Barnegat Light State Park.

The event is sponsored by St. Francis Community Center, 4700 Long Beach Blvd., Brant Beach, NJ, in cooperation with the LBI Jewish Community Center. Applications are now being accepted and registration will continue until race day.

Since 1973, the 18-Mile Run has been held in memory of the 11 Israeli Olympic athletes who were slain at the Munich Olympics on September 5, 1972.

“The killing of those innocent athletes was one of the most horrific acts of terrorism the world had ever seen,” said race director Mike Thompson.

Due to the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the race will also continue to be dedicated to those who lost their lives in America on that unforgettable day. St. Francis Center and the Jewish Community Center will continue commemorating both events.

Mile markers, bearing the names of the victims of both tragedies, will be posted along the race course, in memoriam.

Buses will be provided for registered runners, and will begin leaving for the starting line at 8 a.m.

Buses will continue to run from the finish line to the Community Center. The finish line closes at 2:15 p.m. All runners are invited to a recognition luncheon at the Center immediately following the race.
