Issue 1: Pray, Educate, Act At a recent archdiocesan Communications Workshop, the November ballot’s Issue 1 and its implications were brought forth as a topic of discussion. A priest made one point very clear: We need to talk about this amendment to the Ohio constitution in a very different way than Catholics normally talk about abortion. Do Catholics wish to see an end to all abortions? Yes. But that is not what this constitutional amendment is about.

Regardless of whether Issue 1 passes or fails, abortion will remain legal in Ohio. What is at stake is when a pregnancy can be terminated—and that point is of particular importance. Across the country, the majority of people who claim to be pro-choice do not believe that abortion should be allowed through nine months or birth. Yet, that issue is what this amendment would enable. Don’t believe me? Look at page 13 of this issue of the magazine. We highlighted language on the ballot that would allow for it.

Also of great concern in this proposed amendment is the dissolution of parental notification and consent surrounding not only abortion, but other medical procedures as well. As a parent, this terrifies me. Right now, my children can’t even receive a vaccine without parental consent, and the thought that they would be able to do something life-altering to their bodies without full comprehension of what they are agreeing to is the stuff of nightmares.

In the Gospel according to St. John, Jesus emphasizes that He came so we might have fullness of life (cf. Jn. 10:10).

Most significantly through His Paschal Mystery, but also through every aspect of His life, Jesus worked for our good so that we might have life in abundance, both in this world and for all eternity. It is important to remember that Jesus did this not for humanity as a collective whole, but rather for each one of us as unique, irreplaceable individuals.

Each person is perfectly loved by God and, therefore, each human life is precious and immensely valuable. It is for this reason that the Catholic Church constantly upholds the sanctity and dignity of all people at every stage of life, without exception.

On November 7, 2023, Ohioans will have the opportunity to demonstrate how our state views the sacredness of life and the dignity of women. On November’s ballot will be Issue 1, a proposed amendment (deceptively named “The Right to Reproductive Freedom with Protections for Health and Safety”) to the Ohio Constitution that would enshrine the “right” to take the lives of innocent children in the womb while harming women and families in the process. (Please see page 13 for details.)

Some may assert that the Catholic Church should not be involved in politics. However, the defense of life and care for women compels our participation in this critical moral issue. As Catholics, we cannot remain silent on Issue 1.

The Church must not sit on the sidelines when confronted with such a clear threat to human life and dignity and the primacy of the family. We must reject this extraordinary and dangerous attempt to radically reshape Ohio through a constitutional amendment that does nothing to aid women, strengthen the family or promote life.

But our responsibility to uphold and promote the value, beauty and dignity of every human life is by no means limited to the November vote. God invites each of us to work with Him to lovingly support those in need and to build up a culture of life in our society. This is a work that takes many forms. Generous women and men volunteer countless hours at pregnancy support centers, assisting women in need with material resources and personal accompaniment, both during pregnancy and after their child is born. Prayer groups give public witness to the value of life. Networks of physicians, counselors and other healthcare staff ensure quality care for both mothers and preborn children. Services are available to assist expectant mothers with housing, employment and education. Others help match parents and children through adoption and provide assistance and support to mothers who make this difficult choice.

We know that care for expectant mothers and their children touches on the beginning stages of life, but God calls us to foster a culture of life extending across the whole timeline of human experience. We nurture and educate children so they can have the opportunities necessary for fruitful and fulfilling lives. Young people must be encouraged to not only grow in their faith, but to also learn to defend and share that faith in its richness and beauty. Immigrants and refugees need to feel the embrace of being welcomed into our communities. We reach out and visit the sick and those in prison so they too know they are loved.

Helping others to know and experience God’s love is at the core of creating a culture of life. Let us collaborate with the Lord so every person may have the peace (Jn. 14:27), joy (Jn. 15:11) and fullness of life (Jn. 10:10) which only God can provide.

De manera significativa, a través de su Misterio Pascual, pero también a través de todos los aspectos de su vida, Jesús trabajó para nuestro bien y para que pudiéramos tener vida en abundancia, tanto en este mundo y por toda la eternidad. Es importante recordar que Jesús hizo esto no por la humanidad como un todo colectivo, sino por cada uno de nosotros como individuos únicos e irremplazables. Cada persona es perfectamente amada por Dios y, por tanto, cada vida humana es preciosa e inmensamente valiosa. Por esta razón, la Iglesia católica ha defendido constantemente la santidad y la dignidad de toda persona en todas las etapas de la vida, sin excepción.

El 7 de noviembre de 2023, los habitantes de Ohio tendrán la oportunidad de demostrar cómo es que nuestro estado ve la santidad de la vida y la dignidad de la mujer. Satan and the Devil Do Catholics believe in the existence of Satan? Is Satan the same as the devil?

unfortunate drama about which we know very little” (General Audience, November 15, 1972).

A significant number of Christians do not believe in Satan.

They consider him representative of evil, but not an active being. Yet the Catholic tradition has long acknowledged the existence of Satan and associated with him evil presences that seek to undermine humanity’s relationship with God.

GOD SAVES

VARIOUS NAMES

The Evil One has various names. The most common terms include Satan, from the Hebrew verb meaning “to oppose,” and the devil, from the Greek word for “accuse” or “calumniate.”

These names are used frequently in the Bible, and Satan, Lucifer, the devil, the tempter, or the Evil One are usually synonymous in the Scriptures and Christian writings.

Demons and other evil spirits are related to the Evil One. When Satan rebelled against God, many angels joined in his rebellion. These fallen angels, now called demons, share in Satan’s opposition to God and actively work to tempt and deceive humanity.

ANGELS AND DEMONS

Belief in Satan is based on the understanding that God created both the angelic and the earthly. We confess this whenever we say the Creed: “I believe in … things visible and invisible.”

Satan, one of the invisible creatures, is a fallen angel. The Church teaches that God created the devil and other demons as good, as angels, but they became evil “by their own doing.”

Through their own choice, they “radically and irrevocably rejected God” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 391-392).

Though invisible, the devil and other fallen angels are no less real. Pope Paul VI related that “evil is not merely the absence of something but an active force.” There are many demons, but there is principally one (Satan) who rules. Together, they comprise “a whole mysterious world, convulsed by a most

Jesus came to save humanity from sin and death. His name means “God saves.” The early Church interpreted His coming as the means to destroy Satan and his works. As St. John relates, “The Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the devil” (1 Jn. 3:8). It is fitting that Jesus went head-to-head with Satan just before beginning his public ministry. After successfully enduring three temptations, Jesus said, “Get away, Satan!” and the devil left him (Mt. 4:1-11).

But this was not the end of Jesus’s dealing with the Evil One. Many of His healings in the Gospels involved persons possessed by the devil. Notice how Jesus interacts with the forces of evil: He commands the evil spirits to leave. Whether one or many, they depart. In a most dramatic scene, Jesus sends demons into a herd of pigs, who then rush into the sea where they are drowned (Mt. 8:28-32).

EVIL DOES NOT WIN

Satan and his demons are powerful, but this does not mean they cannot be defeated. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, Satan has been overcome. The Church, through Christ, has power over evil. This is seen in the blessings offered by the Church and in special rites called exorcisms that sanctify persons and objects, commanding evil to flee.

Why God has permitted Satan to have influence here on earth is not known, but we need not fear. Through the power of Christ, we can have victory over Satan’s temptations. We need only call upon Him in faith, as we pray so often in the Lord’s Prayer, “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.”

Talking About Abortion: Why Our Language Matters On November 7, 2023, Ohioans will vote to approve or reject an amendment to the Ohio Constitution, proposing to enshrine abortion as a constitutional right. Drafted and financed by militant pro-abortion advocacy groups, the approved amendment would enable Ohio to have the most extreme abortion law imaginable. Properly read and understood (and as its drafters intend), it would allow abortion up to the day of full-term birth, with no meaningful restrictions. The amendment would prevent Ohio citizens, through their elected representatives, from passing any laws regulating abortion access. This includes, for example, a law that might require parental consent for a minor to procure an abortion or obtain hormonal contraception.

The amendment truly is extreme in its practical effect.

It is impossible to conceive a reformulation that would make it worse.

Of course, we must be resolute in our legal and political opposition to this gruesome proposal. But all the legal wrangling and maneuvering in the world 1 0 | THE CATHOLIC TELE GRAPH

will not be effective unless we are able to articulate a coherent moral case against abortion, founded in a true theology of the human person. I use the word “articulate” deliberately because I am referring not to our moral opposition to the evil of elective abortion, but rather to the words that we use to communicate that conviction. The language that we usually employ— individual “rights”—is not only deficient in that task, but it also actually works against us. Put another way, the vocabulary of individual rights assumes and perpetuates a moral theory that actually supports the extreme policy in the proposed amendment.

As it is used in the United States, developed from 17th century English philosophers Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, the language of individual rights is expressive of a moral theory according to which we are all enemies of one another, competing in a “war of all against all” for whatever we have the power to take.

the human person. Humans are radically individual bearers of absolute claims against one another, without any moral principles to curb or qualify those claims. The only natural measure of our rights to take anything (including taking anything away from another) is our relative power to do so. To the extent that we refrain from the right to exercise that power, it is solely through implied mutual promises. In this moral theory, the “social contract” is not binding; it is only as good as our willingness to keep it for the sake of social peace, consistent with our own convenience.

In the context of abortion, when we cast the issue in terms of rights, our language implies that mother and child are enemies of one another. Both sides in this naturally antagonistic relationship have the natural, mutually exclusive authority to take what they can from the other, limited only by their ability to do so.

If no actual conflict arises, the mother allows the child to be born. But if a conflict does arise, under a regime of individual rights, no natural barrier prevents either mother or unborn child from resolving it according to their respective abilities.

Of course, you can see where this ends. The unborn child might have a “right to life,” but he has no power to enforce this claim against his rights-bearing mother. Thus, the mother’s conflicting right—

to do as she sees fit—permits her to eliminate the opponent in her womb. If we subscribe to a language of rights in our discussion of abortion, this is how the scenario plays out. And it is precisely the way that pro-abortion advocates see the issue. Therefore, when we use their moral language, they win the policy argument. And they win it with our assistance.

Of course, I understand that ecclesial documents from the highest magisterial authorities are replete with the language of “rights.” But this usage is rooted in a very different moral anthropology from the English rights tradition that has formed the American moral psyche. Rather, popes and bishops use the term to signify the implications of being made in the image and likeness of God, and thus endowed with unalienable dignity. This is a theory rooted in a vision of the human person as naturally social, expressed through the venerable Catholic doctrine of the solidarity of all humankind. Rights is the term the Church has used to signify the mutual immunities, privileges, responsibilities and care that we are called to reciprocate with one another.

But this is not how Americans use the language of rights. Thus, I propose that we American Catholics try to wean ourselves from it, using instead a language of dignity, mutual dependence and solidarity. I realize that there might be a quixotic tone to this plea. But we will not—indeed we cannot—win the moral case against abortion in the U.S. using a fundamental moral theory that actually undermines our argument.

The language matters. And in the United States, the language of “rights” means the powerful win over the powerless.

Issue 1 is a proposed amendment to the Ohio Constitution that would endanger the health and safety of women, threaten parental rights, and allow for abortion through all nine months of pregnancy.

Ohioans will vote on November 7, 2023, whether to make this change to the Ohio Constitution.

Will miscarriage care or ectopic pregnancy treatment be denied if Issue 1 fails?

The passing or failure of Issue 1 will have no effect on the

care a pregnant woman receives when her life is in danger, WHERE DOES IT SAY THAT? even if the treatment results in the loss of life of her unborn

child. There is a fundamental difference between an elective abortion and the care provided after a miscarriage.

Seeing a baby for the first time through ultrasound can be life-changing for a pregnant woman in crisis, according to Lauren Purtee, a sonographer at Pregnancy Center Plus in Cincinnati.

“Seventy to 75% of our clients change their mind after the ultrasound,” she said. “That’s pretty big number to show how important that ultrasound is—to be able to show these women their baby so, ‘Yeah, there’s a heartbeat and no, this is not just a clump of cells.’”

Pregnancy Center Plus is a non-profit agency that has served the Cincinnati area for 40 years, offering pregnancy testing and information; STI (sexually transmitted infection) testing; information on pregnant mothers’ rights and all options available to them; parenting classes; male mentoring; nutritional services; referrals for legal aid and other social services; baby items; clothing for the baby and other children at home; and maternity clothes. They also offer remote psychological and post-abortive counseling. All services are free of charge.

“The most common need … [is just] somebody to listen and care about them,” said Purtee, who volunteered part-time for two years before joining the staff full-time in 2019. “We had a client who came in … [and when] the advocate asked, ‘How are you?’ she kind of broke down and … said, ‘You are the first person that asked me how I’m doing since I found out I was pregnant.’”

Purtee said the pregnancy center’s overall goal is to lower fears and raise hope for young women, many of whom are told they can’t achieve their goals if they have a baby.

“We help show them a way in which they can accomplish whatever they want to do,” she said, sharing that a former colleague went to ultrasound school as a single mom of six children.

After moving with her husband and four young children to Ohio from New York, one client learned the moving truck would not arrive for two months.

She said Pregnancy Center Plus provided diapers, baby wipes and other baby necessities, along with clothes

She admitted the amendment is causing concern because of the “huge amount of interpretation” on fetal viability.

“The women are just torn up about it, and then their kid is born, and they find out they don’t have nearly the issues the doctor told them they were going to have,” she said.

“We’re a little nervous about how it’s going to pan out, but then again, God’s got this. And we just gotta have faith that He knows how it’s going to go, and we’ll just keep fighting the fight.”

1. Check yourself.

Before you start talking, you should make sure you know how far you’re willing to take the conversation and be prepared to give yourself an “out” if things get heated. You can always decide to take a break and return to the conversation later or agree to disagree. Conversely, you don’t have to be a doormat.

If someone else tries to force their views onto you, you must decide when it’s important to speak up or step back. Only you can decide where the appropriate boundaries are going to be for you.

2. Check your facts.

It’s likely we’ll all have opportunities to talk about the upcoming state vote on abortion. Whether it’s a casual conversation with a neighbor or friend or a more structured discussion with a campaign representative, you may be asked to share your thoughts on the proposal.

What will you say, and how can you keep important relationships strong, even if you disagree?

The first step—and the most important one of all—is prayer. Talk to God before you talk to anyone else, and ask the Holy Spirit to fill you and guide your words. Filled with this peace, your conversation is sure to be a fruitful one.

Once your spirit is settled, it’s time to begin. Here are 10 easy steps: Reprinted from FAITH Lansing with permission.

Don’t open a conversation you’re not ready to have. If you haven’t thought much about your position, your arguments or your facts, you could quickly find yourself in way over your head. Do your homework and be prepared to speak thoughtfully and sincerely.

3. Be honest and curious.

These conversations are not comfortable for anyone.

Acknowledge all the feelings involved and be prepared to act in ways that are vulnerable and open. Ask good questions and listen well — after all, you’re trying to understand as much as you’re trying to be understood.

4. Try to find shared experiences.

Facts and data points are never going to be as convincing as when one heart truly speaks to another.

Use your heart as a resource and a guide for a conversation that enriches, informs, and loves deeply.

5. This isn’t a presidential debate.

Don’t perform, shoot “zingers” or try to score points at the expense

of your relationship. Be real, thoughtful and sincere—after all, your integrity and sensitivity are going to be far more convincing than any fancy one-liner.

6. Don’t engage in “shaming” behaviour.

When someone feels defensive or embarrassed, they stop hearing you.

Let your conversation be hopeful and friendly, so your relationship will still be intact when you’re done speaking.

7. You have two ears and one mouth.

Use them proportionally. Really listening to the people you’re in conversation with will help you better understand where they’re coming from.

8. Find common ground.

Most people value the same things—tru­ ly! Start with neutral statements and always seek the ideas and feelings you share—at the end of the conversation, these are the most important things you take with you.

9. Avoid anger.

Don’t let your emotions carry you away. It’s okay to disagree with someone and love them at the same time. Christ does this throughout the Gospels, and you can do it too!

10. Remember to rest in the power of your convictions.

Even if you don’t succeed in convincing someone else of your arguments, you don’t have to change your mind. The most important action you’ll take, after all, isn’t in a personal chat with your neighbor, but in making sure you make it to the polls on Election Day! | 17

In our life’s journey, we often encounter moments of profound pain and grief that can leave us feeling lost and alone. The loss of a child through abortion is one such instance that many women and men quietly carry in their hearts. Amid this silent suffering, a beacon of hope and healing exists in Project Rachel.

This compassionate ministry reaches out to those who were involved in abortion, offering them a safe, confidential space of understanding and solace.

Project Rachel is a nationwide ministry with a network of specially trained priests, religious counselors and laypersons dedicated to providing pastoral care, support groups and referrals to licensed mental health professionals. Above all, it offers the assurance of God’s unfailing mercy and love, reminding us that forgiveness and renewal are always within our grasp.

For two women, Elizabeth and Barb, Project Rachel was an indispensable ministry after their abortions, helping them grieve the loss of their babies.

When pregnant at 18-years-old, Elizabeth placed her baby in adoptive care. She became pregnant again years later and had an abortion. As time passed, she found Project Rachel.

“It was meant to be,” said Elizabeth. “God knew I couldn’t handle anymore.”

In high school when she became pregnant, Barb traveled to New York to have her abortion.

“I left part of me in New York,” said Barb.

“Emotionally and spiritually, I left part of me there. I became a different person after the abortion.”

“I thought it was going to be a support group, and it ended up being so much more,” said Barb. “It took me a couple of retreats to experience healing because my denial was very strong. But I have Project Rachel to thank for my life today.”

“Project Rachel is a place for confidentiality, support, encouragement, peace of mind and unconditional love,” said Elizabeth. “Forgiving yourself is the hardest part, but it can be done.”

Its ministry offers a comforting presence filled with compassion, love and understanding. Through its support groups, retreats and counseling, individuals can discover the transformative power of forgiveness and nurture deeper, more meaningful relationships with God. For Elizabeth and Barb, Project Rachel also helped them return to church.

“Project Rachel has wonderful priests [who] helped me realize that God loves me, and I am forgiven,” said Elizabeth.

Barb agreed, “I’m able to recognize today God’s grace, which I would have never recognized years ago. I now see God as a loving God, not a judgmental one, and I have a faith community that I never dreamt I would have.”

opposing

the

forthcoming pro-abortion ballot initiative in Ohio, but I want to do it in a way that is charitable and—if possible—doesn’t ruin lifelong friendships. Please help!

I will do my best to help; let’s pause, pray and ask Jesus to help us.

I would like to begin with the first part of your question: you write that you “know you have to tell your family and friends your reasons for opposing the forthcoming ballot initiative.”

May I humbly suggest that what you are required to do is pray about it?

Some people can exchange ideas, some people can’t.

There are people who are open to new or challenging ways of thinking, and there are people who are not. Jesus is not requiring you to get into shouting matches with people who only want to shout. Your heart is a treasure that Jesus gave the world: protect that treasure. God is not calling you to attempt to reason with un­reasonable

people, and if you find you are unreasonable on this topic, you best serve the issue by not attempting to reason.

With that, no matter anyone’s state of mind, we can pray for them. We can pray that God heals our wounds and the wounds of those who disagree with us.

With that in mind, I would like to share with you my reasons for opposing this ballot initiative, and I will focus on my reasons that I believe pro-choice voters can (and do!) agree with. Let’s dive in!

The crux of my problem with this initiative is that it makes no sense. Here is what I mean by this.

Ohio’s radical ballot initiative would proclaim that there really is no point where the being in the womb is human until the moment after that child emerges from the womb. Whether we consider ourselves pro-choice or pro-life, I think we can all agree that scientifically life begins at some point in the womb. If it did not, how would we even distinguish between a premature baby and a non-person who could simply be aborted?

As far as I can tell, if this initiative is passed, it would

be as radical of an abortion policy as you could find outside of China and North Korea. I’m not kidding. In every civilized country I could find, there is a point where abortion is illegal, a point where the citizens of that country have decided “that’s a life now.” In some countries it’s 12 weeks after conception, in others it’s 14. Russia had the lowest bar I could find at 24 weeks.

Should this initiative pass, we will have the most permissive abortion laws in the world: abortion at any time, for any reason.

Almost every rationale for abortion on demand that I’ve heard pitched by the abortion industry ignores this truth. The commercials I’ve seen actually call my objection to this “radi­cal.” I would call it logical rather than radical to believe there is some point where that being in the womb is human.

If that is not the case, then why do we spend so many medical resources fighting to save the lives of premature babies? It comes down to this: do we define humanity based on whether someone else wants a person to exist? The much-anticipated baby born prematurely is worthy of saving, but the unwanted baby can be disposed of?

If we really believe this, we have descended into a place of evil. I believe with all my heart that this moment is an invitation and opportunity for us to reclaim our sanity. As a person who believes in the sanctity of life, it is my fervent hope that we embrace the reality that we can do so much good in this fight through our answer to Jesus’ call to love and care for the most vulnerable members of our society.

No matter how we choose to vote this fall, I urge us all to be patient, loving and sacrificial. We can and must give of our time and resources to let any expectant mom know that we are here to provide any help we can to God’s people. If we don’t put our money and time where our convictions lie, then we are lost indeed. Our willingness to love, give

Legion FOR Life Women in St. Marys dedicate time and talents to help mothers at Elizabeth New Life Center

It started with a trip to Kettering for prayer.

Legion of Mary ladies from Holy Rosary Church in St. Marys, OH, traveled with a group to pray at an abortion clinic in the spring of 2018. Teresa Vint, a Legion member, recalls that fateful April day when the Elizabeth New Life Center members invited the group across the street to see what services the center provides to women in need.

“We were impressed with their efforts to save babies and provide continuing support to new mothers,” said Vint. She and others in the group were especially drawn to the care packages the Center gives each expectant mother who comes in for assistance.

In these small gifts are a number of baby items, such as a blanket, burp cloth, onesie, socks, toy or binkie and a few religious items, like a small Bible and Miraculous Medal. When the Legion members asked how they could help, the center invited them to collect care package items.

“That’s when the idea of the baby basket collection was ‘born,’” said Vint.

The group placed collection baskets in the back of Holy Rosary Church for baby items and began recruiting parishioners to sew burp cloths, blankets and other clothing for newborns. They try to make blankets that match the colors with

the onesies and other pieces so the gift has a unified look.

“Since the beginning of the project we … provided over 1,000 onesies and almost as many blankets,” said Connie Miley, another Holy Rosary Church Legion member. Their sewing efforts have been so prolific that, “The Elizabeth New Life Center calls our blanket sewers the ‘Blanket Ladies,’” said Miley. “They are excited when we make a delivery.”

Because the Legion of Mary knows the power of Mary’s intercession, they place the Blessed Mother’s presence in the care packages by pinning CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

a Miraculous Medal on each onesie hoping Mary’s “Yes” might inspire the gift recipients to also be courageous in their time of pregnancy discernment. Knowing not all who receive the care packages are Catholic, Legion members believe Mary is still active in each woman’s discernment process, even if she is working “behind the scenes.”

Founded over a century ago by Frank Duff in Ireland, the Legion of Mary seeks for its members to grow in devotion to our Blessed Mother while bearing Christ to the world through service and evangelization. At Holy Rosary Church, the Legion’s other numerous parish and community service projects include helping with Communion services at local nursing homes, making rosaries for the missions, praying with the homebound and serving at funeral luncheons.

In helping assemble these care packages, the Legion members have also been affected, enabling them to think more deeply about the mothers who are pregnant and feel unprepared to have a child. Vint said, “I have always been pro-life, but I think what changed is my realization

that, while prayer is most important, mothers need so much support, both maternally and emotionally, to be courageous enough to keep their babies.”

Being so closely connected to an organization that assists pregnant women contemplating abortion has given volunteers more insight into what it means to be pro-life.

It is in the service of these women that we truly promote the life they carry.

Like Elizabeth New Life Center, there are good prolife organizations in our local communities needing aid. Prayer is the easiest thing we can do, without even leaving the house to assist. Some might be able to support these centers financially. And, like the “Blanket Ladies,” a fulfilling way to help the pro-life movement is to harness our unique gifts, like sewing or volunteering.

Get the parish involved, too! There are more people in the community who want to help, and working together is more fun. Much like Mary who bore Christ to the world, by our actions and words we too can be the presence of Christ to those in distress.

A simple “Yes” can do more than change one person’s life — it can set the foundation for life-changing outcomes for many.

Mikki Doerger had that life-changing moment when she and her husband said, “Yes,” to a pilgrimage with the Catholic Medical Association to Mexico City, where Mater Filius originated. Four years later, Doerger and her husband now oversee and manage operations at Mater Filius Queen City.

“Mater Filius is an international community (three continents, eight countries and 24 cities) of Catholic men and women who are dedicated to providing expecting women with an alternative to abortion that not only empowers them as mothers, but also as women,” said Doerger.

The Cincinnati organization offers housing and

comprehensive support for women who are pregnant up to eight months after their child’s birth.

“We are blessed in the Greater Cincinnati area to have many organizations working to address these concerns and to help women say ‘Yes’ to motherhood,” said Doerger. “I think what really sets Mater Filius apart from other maternity homes is the spiritual formation.

The volunteers are united in a deep Marian devotion to imitate her example of charity in service to others, just as she did with her cousin, St. Elizabeth. We are encouraged by the practice of the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, with a chapel dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the center of our home, so that ‘The R E S PE CT L IF E / O CT OBE R 2023 | 31

Mater Filius aims to defend life with love. While it takes many people to say “yes” to make that happen, voting “no” can also make a significant impact. This is even more essential with the upcoming ballot measure in the November election aiming to destroy Ohio women and families.

“As a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization supporting pregnant women, the November election is certainly on our minds, but our focus has to stay centered on our mission to provide a safe, calm and supportive environment for the women who need our assistance,” said Doerger.

“There are so many women already suffering during a time in their life when they should be allowed to celebrate with excitement and joy. It takes our full attention, love and support to walk with them during this time.”

Doerger joyfully delivers flowers and letter to a new client.

“One thing that I often hear from women is that they do want choices, but maybe not the choices that one might initially think of,” continued Doerger. “These are choices that many of us take for granted. They want choices about education so that they better understand their bodies and the specifics of how and when they get pregnant.

They want opportunities to learn and prepare for motherhood. They want better prenatal care, being listened to in appointments and the delivery room and more support postpartum. They want choices about housing, employment and daycare that allow them to keep and support their babies.

And they need the support of community, friends and family walking beside them. One friend who works helping women so beautifully wrote, ‘It’s not the babies they want to avoid; it’s the poverty.’”

Doerger added, “In my opinion as a woman and a healthcare professional, women need more protections and support around healthcare Continued on page 34

education and care, but this amendment would not only restrict health care regulations, it could possibly prohibit them entirely. This amendment proposes that the state shall not directly or indirectly burden, penalize, prohibit, interfere with or discriminate against an individual exercising this right. Health and safety standards are a must and we already see gaps in healthcare safety, especially when it comes to performing surgical procedures in outpatient settings. We need better safety standards, not fewer standards.”

Doerger concluded by saying she receives calls regularly from health professionals, social workers and other pregnancy centers who share their concerns about the health and safety of women’s care, but she has yet to receive a call from someone seeking help from an abortion center. This, Doerger noted, is because abortion

centers do not have the same mindset as those who are focused on the health and safety of the mother and baby.

“They run a for-profit business that is centered on perpetuating the cycle of poverty and oppression, and now they have submitted a proposal to protect their business interests and to have it forever enshrined in our state constitution,” said Doerger. “If they are really interested in protecting women’s health and safety, I propose they change their name to Unplanned Parenthood and begin offering trauma care services, women’s health and fertility education, parenting and life skills training, adoption services, employment opportunities and affordable housing. Can you imagine the good that could come from the abortion industry putting their resources into addressing the true concerns of women?”

Mercy McAuley High School aims to instill key core values in its students, and evidence indicates it is succeeding. During Lent, the school’s campus ministry sponsored a contest among homerooms to collect the most layettes (a bag of necessities for newborn babies) to donate to Pregnancy Center West. The students came through with 65, each including one receiving blanket, one newborn onesie, two pairs of newborn socks, one pacifier or teether, one pack of newborn diapers and one footed sleeper. And students donated other newborn necessities as well.

Director of Campus Ministry Dave Nissen was pleased to see the students once again participate in a worthy cause.

“I’m blessed to work here. The students are awesome, faith-filled and really do want to serve the community,” he said. “They love one another and they love the people on the outside as well. It’s easy for me to find volunteers to serve.”

Haley Cook, a senior who participated, said the pro-life movement at the school comes in part from Mercy McAuley’s core values: Compelled by mercy; educational courage; inspired by faith; principled leadership; and a voice for dignity and respect.

“We want to help out with anything to do with life,” Cook said. “I know that some people still get abortions all the way through the third trimester ... Through our Catholic faith, we know that life is always precious throughout.”

While many programs help instill an opposition to abortion in Catholic students, Nissen said it is important to go even further. “Life issues don’t stop at just preventing abortion,” he said. “It includes helping moms to have what they need to bring a life into the world.”

Linda Trenn, Executive Director of Pregnancy Center West, agrees. She said collections like the one from Mercy McAuley make a big difference in their ministry.

“It is extremely helpful,” she said. “We run on donations only, and it’s very important to give these baby bags out to the girls when they come in because it makes it all become real when they see the baby clothes or the rattle.”

Trenn noted that several Catholic schools previously donated and such efforts seem to be increasing. She hopes to see more schools join Pregnancy Center West in its mission.

Going forward at Mercy McAuley, Nissen anticipates his students will continue to impact local ministry efforts. He does the legwork, finding ministries that align with Mercy McAuley’s Catholic values, asks what they need, then turns it over to the student body.

“It’s easy to find students to participate,” Nissen said, “when you’re a school compelled by Mercy.”

teen mothers Badin High School Students Volunteer with YoungLives

“I became involved in YoungLives because I have always loved interacting with young kids,” said Badin senior Annie Nguyen. “I also realized that I didn’t have a lot of knowledge on teen pregnancy or the hardships of it and thought that volunteering at YoungLives would be a good way to become more aware.”

YoungLives is a program focused on supporting teen mothers, and it’s now in more than 200 communities across the U.S., including multiple locations throughout Ohio. Guided by their faith and love for service, students in Butler County’s Stephen T. Badin High School have taken up the mantle to support and uplift these teens who are navigating parenthood’s complexities.

“My constant hope is that our students have the opportunity to see outside of themselves, to understand that not everyone’s story looks like theirs, to realize how connected we all are in our humanity despite our different circumstances,” said Badin’s Director of Christian Service, Megan Halverson. “YoungLives gives our students the opportunity to connect with people their age who have very different stories, and the young women at YoungLives are given the chance to feel supported by someone their age who they might not expect to be in their corner. It creates a beautiful connection that opens hearts and minds to others.”

The program offers regular fun gatherings for young mothers to provide inspiration and encouragement, and it hosts activities such as Bible studies, group outings and life skills lessons. Badin students developed additional events, including a wellness night, Christmas parties, a graduation for teen moms and a summer celebration.

“For the summer party, we brought bounce houses for the kids [and] ice cream and gift baskets for each mom,” said Badin senior Grace Lees. “Volunteering with YoungLives has brought my life so much joy, and I am so grateful for the relationships I have been able to build with the kids,” she said.

The Badin students’ find their involvement with the program is much more than an opportunity to fulfill service commitments. They are dedicated to not only transforming the young mothers’ lives, but also fostering a sense of unity, understanding and compassion.

“Our students are inspired to give back to YoungLives because it has given something to them, changing the way they look at the world and at their community, making all of us a bit better,” said Halverson.

“YoungLives has made me realize how thankful I should be for my life and parents and how blessed I truly am,” said Nguyen.

“As a Catholic school, Badin is committed to teaching our students that Catholic Social Teaching is not just something we read about in a book, but it is something to live by—serving with an agency like YoungLives, or any of our partnering nonprofits, is just the beginning of that,” said Halverson. “We are so grateful to YoungLives and all of our partners for opening their doors to our students so that they might have opportunities like this to live out their faith and connect with their community.”

Confession of a Catholic Worker Our Current Moment of Christian Witness

To appreciate Larry Chapp’s new book, Confession of a Catholic Worker: Our Current Moment of Christian Witness, one must understand what he means by “confession.” The book’s central claim is “that as modern Western Christians our cultural situation has flushed us out of our neutral corner and forced us to choose for or against the Gospel,” something our age tries desperately to forget—that is, to avoid confessing.

Thus, Chapp’s Confession is necessarily political, but not in anything like the usual sense. This is not the Catholic Worker’s answer to Rod Dreher’s book, The Benedict Option. Nor does Chapp attempt to situate himself in either a “progressive” or “conservative” Catholic camp. Rather, he invokes Peter Maurin’s “vision of organic change, rooted in the conversion of hearts through the lived witness of an alternative Christian way of living.” This is how Chapp has practiced his own faith, but he presents this confessionally rather than prescriptively.

He also offers readers a writing mode that is genuinely strange. It tells the story of a humanity and of a man who lived an intellectual life in the Church’s service—and both have forgotten too much of themselves. Chapp the confessor thinks out loud from first to last. Sometimes his sentences crackle and pop. Sometimes, they explode. He is inviting you—provoking us—to think with him.

Writers and thinkers of ressourcement and the Nouvelle Theologie figure prominently in Confession, but not to the exclusion of other theological development sources. Rather, Chapp writes as a reader and thinker in conversation with

thinkers and writers from a vast expanse of history, disciplines and experience.

Famed Swiss theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar, for example, is one companion, but Chapp does not insist the reader also receive Balthasar as a traveling companion. To read Chapp most profitably, however, one has to let him include his companions as he shares his journey’s story.

Another companion is the great Harvard philosopher Stanley Cavell (1926-2018), who dedicated much of his significant literary output to the conduct of what he called his “quarrel” with the profession of philosophy: an argument internal to the philosophical way of life, for which philosophy’s professional academic discipline was at least one legitimate incarnation of the philosophical impulse or impetus.

A decade has passed since Chapp abandoned a similar quarrel with the DeSales University theology professional academic discipline and retreated to the Catholic Worker farm he owns and operates with his wife in Pennsylvania. But he has not foresworn the impulse to his confession of theology. Readers of his Confession will be glad he hasn’t.

Seeking the Lord in Our Drudge When I was growing up, my mom would say, “God has a plan for you today, Katie.” Her comment had implications and truth that took decades to sink in. Family life can be monotonous. There is so much sameness played on repeat; work and sleep without much in between. And I have been feeling this reality lately.

School, errands, appointments and work fill the hours but seem like a blur at the end of the day. Afternoon coffee, phone calls and finishing homework with the kids—then I hear, “Hey Mom, what’s for dinner?” I had a meal planned, but didn’t start early enough.

“You guys ate dinner last night, do you really need to do it again?”

My husband tosses his keys on the counter, and together we take on the evening. Pray with the crew before we say goodnight, then handle questions that compel them to get out of bed. We manage 20 minutes of exhausted conversation before hitting the sack so we can wake up and do it all again.

Sometimes, at the end of the day, I can’t fathom getting up to run through the same motions for the thousandth time, and I get a tinge of rebellion amid our repetitive life. On one of my hardest mornings, I waved goodbye to Andrew from the front porch and noticed a plane soar overhead. I wept quietly as I walked back inside because I wished so painfully that I was on it, wherever it was going. Caught up in myself, the conditions were right for pining after a life drastically different from the one I elected to have, the one I know God wants for me. Is this the plan my mom mentioned so many times?

Life is repetitious and, stuck in the rut, we trudge through, hoping for a thrill or some bit of excitement to whisk us away to a place where we can catch a breath, a break or even a full movie before we drift off.

I’m diving into Divine Mercy in My Soul, the diary of St. Faustina, and came upon a passage. At once I knew it applied to those of us inclined to see more grind than glory in the day: O life so dull and monotonous, how many treasures you contain!

When I look at everything with the eyes of faith, no two hours are alike, and the dullness and monotony disappear. The grace which is given me in this hour will not be repeated in the next.

It may be given me again, but it will not be the same grace. (St. Faustina, para. 62) Praise God for our sister in Christ, St. Faustina. Enlightened by her words, I’ve recognized that my experiences of the same activities with my same, wonderful family are each unique down to the most basic of interactions. Passing my little girl in the hall, I notice the sweetness of her freckles. My husband’s frequent gesture of bringing me coffee strikes me as generous instead of expected. Kneeling during the Consecration in Mass, I’m struck by the True Presence. My Lord and my God. When we seek the Lord in our drudge, it’s no longer a drudge.

In His mercy, Jesus offers us countless graces, not to survive the day, but to live it fully and with joy. Every single day is already good because it is divinely fashioned and we were intended to exist in it by One Whose intentions are for our benefit.

The life in Christ is never inherently dull. Routine will remain, but with our minds open to the Lord’s ever-newness, we can thrill in the monotony. God has a plan for you today, and it contains no shortage of grace and wonder found in the often overlooked details of our vocations.

POPE ST. JOHN PAUL II’S THEOLOGY OF THE BODY

The Gift of the Moral Law Note: This article is part of an ongoing series on Pope St. John Paul II’s “Theology of the Body” (TOB).

In the second major part of TOB, Pope St. John Paul II guides us in exploring the implications of our redemption in Christ and the moral teaching of the New Testament for the relationship between the sexes and our call to spousal love.

Before we can delve into this teaching, it is helpful to pause and ponder an essential but overlooked question: What is the purpose of the moral law?

In our modern age, law is typically seen in a distorted way as purely an instrument of control. In the best case scenario, some see it as imposed for the sake of social order, but in the worst case, it is seen as merely a tool by those in power to maintain their position. Additionally, we live in an increasingly relativistic age that rejects belief in moral absolutes, making each person the sole arbiter of right and wrong. Indeed, we regularly hear references to “your truth” and “my truth” as if truth could be different from one person to the next.

These views of the moral law pervade our culture and even infect the hearts and minds of many Catholics. If we make an honest examination, we may discover that we are embarrassed by Catholic moral teaching. We may outwardly profess to be good Catholics and faithful followers of Jesus, but when difficult moral issues come up, we distance ourselves from the Church’s teachings and hope 5 2 | THE CATHOLIC TE LEGRAPH

that the topic will just go away. A complacent attitude of “well, the official teaching of the Church is _____, but only extremist/fanatical/rigid/ultra-traditional people live that way” creeps into our hearts and grows like a cancer, slowly cutting us off from the life of God within us.

When we look at the moral law in this distorted way, we can only see it as an arbitrary burden imposed on us for nefarious purposes (e.g., to control us, to make us miserable, etc.). Even more, our distorted, relativistic thinking often conceals and enables attachment to sin. These two forces work together to lead us to despise the moral law because it calls us to reform our lives.

As Pope St. John Paul II said in his great encyclical on the moral life, Veritatis splendor, “Those who live ‘by the flesh’ experience God’s law as a burden, and indeed as a denial or at least a restriction of their own freedom” (VS, 18). As a result, we begin to see the moral law as a threat to our freedom from which we must protect ourselves. We regard it with suspicion, resentment and even outright hostility.

All our hearts need purification from our attachment to sin and our culture’s distorted, relativistic thinking. To this end, I invite all of us to meditate on Psalm 119, in which the inspired psalmist beautifully pours out his deep love, thankfulness and even yearning for God’s law. He speaks of it as sweeter than honey, finer than gold, greater than riches, the source of his comfort, the song of his house and

Christmas in Bethlehem the delight of his heart. If we see it rightly, with pure eyes, this would be our hearts’ natural response toward all Catholic moral teaching.

In reality, the moral law is not an imposition or a burden.

Nor is it a restriction of our freedom. Rather, the moral law is one of our loving Father’s greatest gifts to us. It is meant to ensure and enhance our freedom by protecting us from ways of living that harm us. Sin is the true threat to our freedom for “everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin” (Jn. 8:34). As St. Paul reminds us, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand fast therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (Gal. 5:1).

Pregnancy Care Centers:

An Antidote to Fear Every day a scared pregnant woman walks into one of Ohio’s 130 pregnancy help centers. She may not have told a soul she is pregnant, or she may have already been scolded that she is too young, too poor, or too incompetent to parent. She may bring the baby’s father, who is also fearful that he can’t be an effective dad.

This is where Pregnancy Center Plus and other pregnancy help centers step in to lower her fear and raise her hope. We empower her not just to have the baby, but to flourish as a parent or choose adoption.

Mandy* came to PCPlus tearful, believing that abortion was her only option. Like 80% of women seeking termination, she did not truly want an abortion, but felt alone and panicked at the daunting prospect of providing for a child. With love and compassion, our Client Advocate gave her so much more than abortion alternatives. Mandy met her eight-week-old unborn baby for the first time and heard his strong heartbeat as she watched him move across the ultrasound screen. She had her first prenatal visit, with a midwife who allayed her medical concerns through our on-site telehealth program. She also learned about the loving choice of adoption from our onsite adoption agency. She left armed with vital community resources and a new-found assurance that, “I can do this!”

Next, Mandy and her boyfriend enrolled in our parenting classes and accessed a complete network of pediatricians, parenting and nutrition coaches, and other expectant parents.

Throughout her pregnancy, her Client Advocate continued checking in with her. Mandy later returned for maternity clothes and baby supplies and received a free crib and car seat.

Last week, she and her now-fiancée returned to the Center cradling little Roland*. These proud parents beamed as they explained, “We’re sleep deprived, but so grateful to have this 5 8 | THE CATHOLIC TELE G RAPH

little guy. Thank you for helping us to realize that our greatest blessing was just on the other side of our greatest fear.”

Teenage clients often need help in revealing the pregnancy to their parents. They come to us thinking, “My parents will kill me.” We provide a safe space to pause, become fully informed, and find the best ways to approach their parents. We reassure them that they are not alone and we are happy to sit with their parents and help them process the situation. We let them know that, despite their age, no one can coerce them into having an abortion.

Sometimes parents accompany their daughter to the appointment. Shantel* had just been told of her daughter’s pregnancy that morning and was reeling with shock. She was angry, blamed herself and was grieving the “loss of her dream” for her daughter’s future. We specialize in calming these emotions and helping the family to arrive at a life-affirming decision everyone can live with. Shantel and her daughter left the Center, arm-in-arm, with confidence that, although the circumstances were difficult, together they would welcome this baby into their hearts and home.

As these stories illustrate, Ohioans can count on Pregnancy Center Plus and the other centers throughout the state to provide free services and exceptional support to couples facing an untimely pregnancy.
