Walk by the Light of Christ This issue of The Catholic Telegraph focuses on “faith firsts.” What does that mean, exactly? Faith firsts are those moments in our lives when we encounter some part of our faith for the very first time.

What is a “faith first” for you? Was it the moment you were baptized, or your child was baptized? Or perhaps it was the first time you felt a true connection with God through prayer, or when you prayed the Rosary for the first time.

Maybe it was the awe of First Communion and recognizing that Jesus is truly present in the Blessed Sacrament.

I can think of many faith firsts in my personal life, but one moment stands head and shoulders above the others: On July 2, 2011, not only did we baptize our first child, but I was confirmed and my husband and I convalidated our marriage in the Church. Talk about an abundance of blessings!

The Catechism says, “In baptism, the Holy Spirit moves us to answer Christ’s call to holiness. In baptism, we are asked to walk by the light of Christ and to trust in His wisdom.

We are invited to submit our hearts to Christ with ever deeper love.”

That day was a moment of profound grace and overwhelming love our family shared together as my husband and I recommitted to love one another as God loves the Church, and to teach our daughter how to walk by the light of Christ. It was also the starting point of a rich life of faith and trust in God – a life that eventually grew to encompass three more children and initiated us into loving Catholic parishes and schools. It was the first step in recognizing just how much we are loved by the Father and an invitation to learn more, pray more and submit our joys, fears and difficulties to the foot of the Cross.

I hope this issue of the magazine inspires those same feelings – that it helps you kickstart or re-energize your faith and that of your family. We included relateable topics for all ages and stages of life and faith – from tangible ways to engage young children in prayer and take part in a Marian Consecration for the first time, to learning about what confirmation really means and what it’s like to be a priest in the first few years.

In his pastoral letter, Radiate Christ, Archbishop Schnurr includes a prayer that echoes what we are called to in baptism, as well as a call to witness our faith in a way that bears fruit. Perhaps in doing so, we may serve as someone’s first encounter with faith.

Mary, Mother of the Church and our Mother, present our prayer of thanksgiving to your Son. Beg from Him the graces we need to be faithful disciples who follow Him with enthusiasm and joy. May our witness to the love of God bear fruit in our archdiocese, parishes, homes and hearts. Teach us to be God’s joyful witnesses, to radiate Christ in all we do, so that all people might know, love and follow your Son through this life and into the next. Amen.

We all know the old expression “charity begins at home.”

So does faith. One of the greatest responsibilities Catholic parents have is to pass the faith on to their children, primarily by example. This is what is meant by calling the family the “domestic church,” as many popes and Church documents have done. A child ideally first encounters a loving community of faith in his or her own home.

At the same time, a child’s relationship to the broader Church begins at baptism. Through water and the Spirit (John 3:5), the baptized are incorporated into the Body of Christ. This does not simply mean membership in a 2,000-year-old organization, although that is certainly important. “Baptism is the sacrament of faith,” the sacrament that makes all the others possible. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, however, makes this important qualifier: “But faith needs the community of believers. It is only within the faith of the Church that each of the faithful can believe” (CCC 1253).

In the earliest years of a young person’s life, when the habits and attitudes of a lifetime are formed, that community of believers is primarily represented by parents, grandparents and godparents. This responsibility can seem like a monumental challenge. That is why, in this issue of The Catholic Telegraph, you will read about how to encourage and strengthen your children’s faith. A few practices are essential: You are encouraged to talk about your faith in a very personal way with your children. Share your experiences and invite their questions. Say grace together before meals.

Pray together in the evening. Engage in charitable service as a family, teaching respect and care for every person made in the image and likeness of God. Offer up any family difficulties or sorrows to our Lord, showing how faithful suffering can be a source of grace. Most importantly, let

your children see you living your faith through active and whole-hearted participation with them at Mass, even when on vacation, and through daily efforts to grow closer to God. In my pastoral letter, Radiate Christ, I note the need for each of us to make space and time in our lives to seek the face of the Lord, be converted to Him, and allow Jesus to work through us so that we can radiate Christ to the rest to the world. That is a highly personal endeavor. It is not, however, private. Our never-ending journey of faith takes place in the context of the community of believers. That is perhaps most obvious in the Eucharist, where we come together in communion as God’s holy people.

Participation in the Mass on Sundays and Holy Days is an obligation for Catholics – the first of the seven precepts of the Church. It is not a burdensome obligation. It is an opportunity. What does it mean to say “The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life” (Lumen Gentium 11)? It means this is where we are nourished by God’s Word and the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ, as well as where we are given the strength to be His joyful witnesses in our daily lives.

When the dispensation from the Mass obligation was lifted because of the improving COVID-19 situation, I referred to a statement from all the bishops of Ohio, noting that the Mass is “a gift to the faithful for their spiritual well-being, eternal salvation and formation in our relationship to God and one another . . . The Eucharist is the great gift Christ left to the Church – the gift of Himself.”

We must not take this great gift for granted, but enthusiastically share the wonder of the Eucharist and our faith with our children from their earliest years.

Todos conocemos la vieja expresión “la caridad comienza en casa”. También la fe. Una de las mayores responsabilidades que tienen los padres Católicos es transmitir la fe a sus hijos, principalmente con el ejemplo.

Esto es lo que se entiende cuando se llama a la familia la “iglesia doméstica”, como muchos papas y documentos de la Iglesia han hecho. Idealmente, un niño se encuentra por primera vez con una comunidad amorosa de fe en su propia casa.

Al mismo tiempo, la relación de un niño con la Iglesia en general comienza en el bautismo. A través del agua y el Espíritu (Juan 3:5), los bautizados se incorporan al Cuerpo de Cristo. Esto no significa simplemente la pertenencia a una organización de 2,000 años de antigüedad, aunque eso es ciertamente importante. “El bautismo es el sacramento de la fe”, el sacramento que hace posible a todos los demás. Ese es un esfuerzo muy personal. Sin embargo, no es privado. Nuestro interminable camino de fe tiene lugar en el contexto de la comunidad de creyentes. Eso es quizás más evidente en la Eucaristía, donde nos unimos en comunión como pueblo santo de Dios.

La participación en la Misa de los domingos y Días Santos es una obligación para los Católicos – el primero de los siete preceptos de la Iglesia. No es una obligación gravosa. Es una oportunidad. ¿Qué significa decir “La Eucaristía es la fuente y la cumbre de la vida Cristiana” (Lumen Gentium 11)? Significa que aquí es donde nos nutre la Palabra de Dios, el cuerpo, la sangre, el alma y la divinidad de Jesucristo, así como donde se nos da la fuerza para ser Sus testigos gozosos en nuestra vida cotidiana.

Cuando se levantó la dispensación de la obligación de Misa debido a la mejora de la situación de COVID-19, me referí a una declaración de todos los obispos de Ohio, señalando que la Misa es “un don a los fieles por su bienestar espiritual, salvación eterna y formación en nuestra relación con Dios y entre sí ... La Eucaristía es el gran don que Cristo dejó a la Iglesia – el don de Sí mismo.”

HOLY WATER AT HOME? When I was young, we kept holy water in a small font at the entrance to our bedrooms. What is the origin of the practice? Can we still use holy water in our homes?

When entering a church building, we reflexively sign ourselves with holy water. In doing so, we are participating in an ancient tradition. Water as a symbol of cleansing and purity has pre-Christian origins. Our Jewish forbearers saw water as a spiritual symbol with spiritual effects. God commanded Moses and the Israelites, for instance, to wash before worship: “When they approach the altar to minister, to offer an oblation to the Lord, they must wash their hands and feet, lest they die” (Ex. 30: 20-21).

AS A SACRAMENTAL

The Church considers holy water to be a sacramental, a sacred sign that bears a resemblance to the sacraments. It is closely connected to baptism, among other sacraments, and is symbolic of Christ, who called himself “living water” and who is the font of eternal life. It reminds us, too, of Christ, the saving victim from whose side blood and water flowed, an allusion to the Church and the sacraments.

The first Christians may have used holy water. According to one tradition, the Gospel writer St. Matthew blessed holy water. An early form of blessing holy water was attributed to Pope Alexander in the early 2nd Century. The Apostolic Constitutions, an ancient document showing liturgical and sacramental practices, indicates belief in the power of holy water. Through Christ, the water was granted “power to restore health, to drive away diseases, to banish demons, and to disperse all snares.” Holy water, partly because of its connection to baptism, became closely connected to warding off evil.

IN THE LITURGY

Holy water can be blessed as part of Mass or apart from it.

The practice of Christians placing holy water at the doors of churches probably originated from the Jewish custom of ceremonial washing in preparation for making sacrifices. In its earliest use in churches, worshipers took it upon entering the church but not upon leaving, a reminder that purification was only needed when approaching the house of God. Eventually, the water was taken any time one passed the font.

The use of water as part of the sacrament of baptism was probably the root of clergy formally blessing it. Today, the rite of blessing can take various forms and can include the exorcism and blessing of salt (a symbol of protection from corruption) to be mixed with the water. What is essential in the blessing of water is the prayer itself (“Lord our God … graciously + bless this water …”). A longer form of blessing, which can be adapted, includes a reading from Scripture.

IN THE HOME

Once blessed, the water is available in fonts in churches. The faithful are welcome to fill a small bottle or another receptacle to take the water home. The water can be placed in a font within the home, often hung on the wall near a doorway, or it may remain in the bottle. Holy water can be used for blessing oneself or for parents to bless their children. It serves as a tangible sign of Christ and a reminder of the rites of the Church that use water, including baptism and Eucharist.

Whenever we dip our hand in holy water, we participate in a powerful and ancient sacramental. As in the past, the faithful are encouraged to take water home as a means of blessing and a reminder for one’s home and family life to image Christ.

fostering a community spirit organized groups, such as the Knights of Columbus or Knights of St. John, required membership dues, and, in turn, provided insurance.

Additionally, societies provided members and the parish community with social activities. Concerts, plays and recitals brought the community together and strengthened their bonds.

Pictures of ladies at church bazaars and Knights of Columbus marching in a parade are common images of Catholic life. Through the centuries, parishes and local communities have created groups to enliven the faith life of its members.

With the influx of immigrants in the 19th Century, parishes grew quickly. Often working in a missionary setting, pastors knew they alone could not reach all of their parishioners. Relying on leaders in the laity, there were established groups and societies that supported the various demographics of the parish. These societies were a way for members to receive mutual edification, encouragement and serve as a resource to support the parish. Creating societies for every stage of life guaranteed that every parishioner belonged to the community and could avail themselves of the spiritual and social advantages of membership.

Whether for men, women, married couples or children, societies first promoted the spiritual development and growth of their members. In a time when reception of the Eucharist was infrequent, members would be required to go to confession and receive together as a group once a month. Popular devotions were encouraged in and outside the society. For example, the Holy Name Society at St. Bonaventure Church in Cincinnati gave religious kits with sacramentals to parishioners who were fighting in World War II. Societies also assisted the parish and community through both practical and financial means. They raised funds to purchase a new organ or altar, assisted with parish debt reduction, supported families in need, raised money for local charities, and provided for ongoing needs like orphanages, or natural disasters. Some

An anniversary book from St. George Parish in Cincinnati lists the many societies of the parish and, for some, the year they were founded. It includes: St. George Men’s Society (1868), St. Mary Married Ladies’ Society (1869), St. Michael Young Men’s Society (1870), St. Frances Young Ladies’ Society (1878), and the Christian Mother’s Society (1883).

As was common, a men’s society was created first. Working in the secular world, they were advocates for the faith to non-Catholics, and, in the parish, they offered consultation on financial matters.

Women’s groups applied their talents to create beautiful spaces by sewing altar linens and keeping the church clean. In homes, women’s societies encouraged and supported Christian motherhood.

Whether for men or women, a core feature of the societies was to encourage family prayer.

The abundance of church societies in the 19th and early 20th Centuries was a remarkable episode in the history of the Church. Although most of these groups do not exist today, parishes still create ways for parishioners to give of their time, talents and treasure to the Church and local community.

On June 19, 2021, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati will celebrate its bicentennial, recognizing 200 years of faith in Western and Southwestern Ohio. Each month, we will feature events and people who played significant parts in its story. These stories aim to inspire, educate and celebrate the many gifts God has given our local Church.

Be the Change While the domestic church is the primary place for knowledge of the faith, it is aided and supported by parish life and classroom religious instruction. The two men profiled this month are different in their ministries but similar in that they saw needs in the Church and set out to fulfill them.

Edward Purcell Cleary (1865-1936) •

Edward Cleary lost his hearing at age 6 and attended a Cincinnati school for the deaf. Father John Mackey, his pastor from St. Patrick Church, provided his religious instruction.

In 1887, Cleary completed his college education in Washington, D.C. and desired to open a school in Cincinnati for deaf-mute children. Writing to Archbishop William Elder about this urgent need, Cleary was certain a new school would immediately have 25-30 pupils.

The Cathedral School for the Deaf opened in 1887 with 13 students. For the three years the school was open, Cleary wrote annual updates to the archbishop. While the first place of formation is the home, families with a deaf child had a difficult time communicating with them, particularly regarding religious instruction. This school provided the children with education about their faith.

The school closed in 1890, and Cleary lamented the apathy of local families and even the clergy.

However, he continued his work by teaching sign language to women and men religious. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur opened a school for the deaf at their school on Sixth and Sycamore between the years 1890-1915. The Sisters of Charity, Jesuits and Franciscans also provided education for deaf children, and, in 1915, St. Rita School for the Deaf opened.

St. Rita Adult Deaf-Mute Welfare Society provided missions, socials and even two baseball teams for local members. They met at various churches and homes throughout Cincinnati.

Omer Westendorf (1916-1997) •

Born and raised on the west side of Cincinnati, Omer Westendorf took over duties as choir master at St. Bonaventure Church at Christmas in 1936, a position he held for 40 years. While he served in Europe during World War II, his sister, Hilda, took over his responsibilities until he returned.

While stationed in Holland, Westendorf became acquainted with modern liturgical music. When he returned to America, he implemented this music at his parish.

•

Westendorf created a library of European music and promoted its use in America. Officially founded in 1950 as the World Library of Sacred Music (WLSM), it grew to more than 80 employees. His mission was to introduce (or reintroduce) Gregorian chant, polyphonic music and modern works to Americans.

These efforts earned him national acclaim.

•

Another source of acclaim for Westendorf was the St. Bonaventure Choir. This nationally known choir performed at public events and recorded several albums. The most notable of these was The Bible Story of Christmas, Narrated by Bing Crosby, released in 1957. The choir also recorded an album of largely unknown Ave Marias.

Westendorf produced two hymnals, The Peoples Hymnal (1955) and The People’s Mass Book (1964).

Both were a mixture of familiar hymns and new compositions. For the second, the music reflected the liturgical reforms following the Second Vatican Council. A composer himself, Westendorf included his own works in these books, and is best known for writing the lyrics for “Gift of Finest Wheat.”

Full churches. Joyful people. A pastor who is passionate and present to the faithful. Abounding generosity.

Great music and homilies. Functional and beautiful spaces. A community that draws you closer to Jesus and helps you spread His love to your family, friends, neighbors and coworkers.

A place of welcoming, belonging, hope, peace and love.

But let’s be honest for a moment; for many Catholics there is a large and growing gap between what they dream their parish would be and what it really is. That doesn’t mean we don’t love our parishes. We do. Most engaged Catholics passionately love their parish. But I think we can all recognize there are things that could be better.

At certain times throughout our history, this has required us to take a step back to seriously and honestly evaluate how our resources are distributed, to ensure they meet the present needs of the faithful. Now is one of those times.”

Beacons of Light is a multi-year process of pastoral planning for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Archbishop Schnurr has assembled a team to lead this initiative and create a process for evaluating the current reality and needs of our parishes. This includes meeting with outside consultants who specialize in diocesan and archdiocesan planning; listening to the perspectives of pastors and priests and soliciting the participation and feedback of the faithful.

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati sees that too, and that’s why Archbishop Schnurr has announced Beacons of Light, an initiative to plan for the future of our parishes.

While our parishes are filled with wonderful people, staffed by mission-focused leaders and led by holy priests, there are many factors – some of which are completely out of the parish’s control – which, when taken together, diminish parish life.

people are engaged in their faith. We see evidence of this every Sunday. In the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, the average Sunday Mass is about one-third full.

Demographics in the Midwest are changing. The Catholic population is moving south. According to the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate, the number of Catholic parishes in Ohio decreased by 171 from 1971 to 2018 while the number of Catholic parishes in Florida, for example, increased by 165 over the same time span.

In the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, our resources are spread too thin. Our current infrastructure and schedules were built for a different era.

Beacons of Light is a process that will unfold over the next few years, and it has only just begun. While the team appointed by Archbishop Schnurr - led by Father Jan Schmidt, Director of the Department of Pastoral Vitality- has begun meeting with consultants and collecting data from parishes, there is still so much more to come.

When asked how he would like lay faithful to participate, Archbishop Schnurr said, “I would like lay faithful to engage with the process by learning about Beacons of Light and staying informed. I would like them to encourage their fellow Catholics to get involved. I would ask them to give us their feedback and know that we will listen. And, most importantly, I would ask them to pray. As we embark on this process, let us together ask for the intercession of our Blessed Mother that God continue to bless us with His presence and His love.”

St. Vincent Ferrar Parish Celebrating 75 Years in Kenwood

St. Vincent Ferrer Parish in Kenwood was the site of a joyous celebration June 6, as the faith community marked its 75th anniversary. Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr presided at the anniversary Mass, with Fathers Dennis Jaspers, pastor, and Tom Wray, parochial vicar, as concelebrants.

There was a time when the now-bustling shopping and residential area where the parish is located was a little more than field. With the end of the Second World War and new homes being constructed, the population in Kenwood grew rapidly, and neighboring Catholic churches were unable to accommodate the faithful. The first Mass for the new parish, named for the Dominican preacher, was held at a local school gymnasium on March 17, 1946.

The rapidly growing new parish needed its own space, so the Archdiocese of Cincinnati purchased 12 acres of land, and in July 1946, construction of the first building began. Father Norbert Miller was named administrator of the parish, which served approximately 175 families. The original church was a prefabricated surplus hanger from the war and served not only as worship space, but also as the school, convent and rectory. It’s still in use today and houses the school cafeteria, gym and parish offices.

By 1956, St. Vincent Ferrer Parish had grown to 450 families, with school enrollment on the rise. Ground was broken for a new school building on Nov. 9, 1958. That facility, which still serves as the parish school today, was dedicated less than a year later by then Auxiliary Bishop Paul Leibold. The present church building was dedicated on Feb. 2, 1969.

SURRENDER IT ALL Leave the care of your affairs to Me and everything will be peaceful.

In my 13 years as a wife and 12 as a mother, there have been plenty of times when I’ve simply run out of answers. Every family carries unique burdens that can overwhelm and exhaust us emotionally, and my husband and I have faced a robust mix of daily obstacles and larger-than-life problems that proved nearly insurmountable or, at the very least, challenging.

Like many faithful, I fall into the classic pattern of neglecting prayer when life is going well, but shift into high-gear supplication when I’m in dire straits. Preoccupied with my problems, my worry yields pleas for God to fix my circumstances the way I hope they’ll be fixed. I have a solution in mind, but unable to actualize it myself, so I turn to divine providence to perform a miracle.

This approach is less than ideal for spiritual sanity. When I pray steadily and consistently, I’m much more assured of the mercy and love of Jesus, Who is Lord over every circumstance - calm, crisis and everything in between. It’s this reality that I experienced in praying the Surrender Novena.

I heard about the Surrender Novena about a year before praying it the first time. The daily readings present Jesus’ own words as revealed to Servant of God Father Don Dolindo Ruotolo. Father Ruotolo received the stigmata and also served as spiritual director to St. Padre Pio. When speaking of his spiritual director, St. Pio said “the whole of paradise is within him.” Father Ruotolo was an exorcist and mystic whose intimacy with the Lord allowed him to perform miraculous healings. Even after his passing in 1970, his intercession remains powerful in cases of spiritual warfare and physical ailments.

I took up the prayer when I was overcome with uncertainty.

My husband and I were approaching our first marriage therapy appointment and I was apprehensive about it. Like so many couples, our marriage is good, but not without burdens and 1 4 | T H E C A THOLIC TELE GR A PH

pain. It was this intention I brought before Jesus.

“Why do you confuse yourself by worrying?” I read on Day 1.

“I say to you in truth that every act of true, blind, complete surrender…resolves all difficult situations.” Each day carried the same message – that offering God my concerns, the need for control and my overwhelming feelings will make way for a peace the world cannot give. Such reassurance was exactly what I needed, and every time I went to pray, I felt relief knowing Jesus would handle my concerns. The whole novena became a meditative invitation to entrust every degree of worry to Christ with the confidence that He has “plans for welfare, not for woe” (Jer. 29:11).

I prayed the Surrender Novena each night before going to sleep, and quickly realized putting my mind to rest helped put my body to rest as well. Though initially faced with anxieties, I rested, understanding that God saw the whole of my marriage – past, present and future – and that He holds it entirely in His hands. Our first counseling appointment concluded peaceably.

For those of us who are sure we need to handle our problems ourselves, the Surrender Novena speaks peace to souls weary from self-sufficiency. Indeed, the Lord speaks to this specifically on Day 6: “Satan tries…to agitate you and to remove you from My protection and to throw you into the jaws of human initiative. So, trust only in Me, rest in Me…” Though my experience is my own, several people have shared that the Surrender Novena fortified their trust in God’s providence and released them from anxiety. What weighs on your mind? Surrender your marriage, your children and your heart to Jesus.

A long, long time ago, the prophet Isiah wrote that, in the future, a man would come and help lead people to the Savior.

Before that man’s birth, an angel appeared to his father, Zechariah, and told him his wife, Elizabeth, would have a son, even though she was old. The angel told him to name him John, and that he would be very important.

As John grew up, he spent time outdoors, away from civilization. He lived alone in the desert for most of his life. John moved back to the city once Jesus was preaching.

John knew Jesus very well. In fact, they were close in age and cousins! John helped prepare people to meet Jesus by offering baptisms in the Jordan River - which is where he got his nickname: John the Baptist. Being baptized meant you were officially a follower of Christ.

A lot of people thought John was the Savior because he was so smart and faithful. John had to explain many times that he was not the Savior, but Jesus was. He would tell them how amazing, powerful and loving Jesus was.

One day, Jesus visited John at the river and asked John to baptize him. John was completely awestruck and did not feel worthy to baptize the Son of God! When John dunked Jesus under the water, the Holy Spirit appeared as a dove, the sky opened up and a beam of light shined down upon them with a voice from the Heavens saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Fostering Community on Campus Catholic Ministries Appeal Nurtures Catholic Campus Ministry B Y E IL E E N C ON N E L L Y, OS U

The four years young people spend in college are critical not only in the formation of who they became as they enter into the adult world, but also who they become as they mature in their Catholic faith. That’s why Father Ethan Moore is so committed to Catholic campus ministry. Since last July, he has served as pastor at Holy Name Parish in Mount Auburn and St. Monica-St. George Parish Newman Center, which provides campus ministry to the Catholic community at the University of Cincinnati.

Father Moore acknowledged that COVID-19 has been “a struggle and very isolating for students. People come to college with the hope of doing new things, meeting new people, and getting involved.”

Fortunately, campus ministry has helped ensure students stay connected with each other and their faith. “We are in the beautiful position that offers us the ability to connect with students who are so in need of human connection the 1 6 | T H E C ATHOLIC TE LEGR A P H

space and ability to pray and share life,” Father Moore said.

This includes a Sunday evening campus ministry Mass, held at St. Monica-St. George. The candlelight liturgy is geared toward being especially welcoming for students and features appealing music and prayerful fellowship.

Approximately 100 students generally participate.

Every Thursday evening when school is in session, young people can attend Catholic Bearcat Night, featuring Eucharistic Adoration and Mass, followed by dinner and a community building activity.

Students recently had the chance to participate in the SEEK21 conference through FOCUS, a Catholic collegiate outreach. The multi-day event included livestream presentations and interactions with other campus ministries, the sacrament of reconciliation, and Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter Chains with Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr.

He continued, “The previous best CMA was in 2013 with $5.65 million pledged, and we have now surpassed that year’s total. THE IMPORTANCE OF

Marian Consecration

The idea of consecrating oneself to Mary, or to “Jesus through Mary,” seems to be growing in popularity among Catholics. Why is this and what does it mean?

Although Catholics throughout the centuries have been consecrating themselves to the Blessed Mother, it began to grow in popularity under the pontificate of Pope John Paul II. The Holy Father chose as his papal motto “Totus Tuus,” a phrase which means, “Totally Yours,” and is taken from the famous book on Marian consecration by St. Louis de Montfort, called True Devotion to Mary.

According to St. Pope John Paul II, reading St. Louis de Montfort’s book and making his consecration to Mary at the age of 19 was a “decisive turning point” in his life.

Another reason why Marian consecration is growing in popularity is due to the ease, beauty and simplicity of Father Michael Gaitley’s book on Marian consecration, called 33 Days to Morning Glory.

For some people, this step of Marian consecration is easy and comfortable, but for others, it represents something unusual, mysterious and even scary. Some people are worried that they are not worthy of it or that it will involve extra prayers and sacrifices.

However, Marian consecration is not about who we are, what we have done or what we need to do, but rather it is about our hearts.

It is as simple as a child needing and desiring the love and care of a mother who loves him beyond all telling.

The Blessed Mother loves and cares for all her children, but by consecrating our lives to her, we are personally inviting her to “mother” us in a special and more powerful way. The Blessed Mother is waiting for this personal invitation.

As a matter of fact, it was Our Lord’s idea. Jesus knew that life would be difficult, so He wanted to share His own Mother with us to help us. As His last gift on the Cross before He died, Jesus gave His Mother to His Beloved Disciple (St. John), who represents all baptized Christians.

By this act – “Here is your son; here is your mother” – we become her spiritual children and she loves and cares for us. However, According to Pope Benedict XVI, when St. John “took her into his home,” it represents a personal action on the part of the Christian to take her into his “interior home,” his heart.

This personal step is an important one and it represents Marian consecration.

The Blessed Mother knows perfectly well how to care for each of us uniquely and individually. Through your consecration, she will lead you to know yourself better, help you to have patience with others, encourage you to pray better, inspire you to love God and neighbor more, show you how to carry your crosses well and help to free you from your fears and anxieties. She will share her virtues with you and lead you to live a life of peace, trust and joy.

Consecration to Mary is not to be feared but it does require a desire to grow and change. Parents should encourage their children to consecrate themselves to the Blessed Mother from an early age.

She will lead them and guide them in a special way as they navigate through the difficult periods of adolescence and young adulthood.

Marian consecration is not about who we are, what we have done or what we need to do, but rather it is about our hearts.

SEALED WITH THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Many today understand the sacrament of confirmation as a “rite of passage,”,but it is much more than that. In baptism, the Holy Spirit is poured into our hearts; in confirmation, we are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. As young people and converts receive this sacrament, they are strengthened by the Spirit to become faithful and courageous witnesses of Jesus and the Church. The gifts of the Spirit are stupendous realities, enabling us to live out the Gospel.

Before anointing with the oil of chrism, the bishop stretches out his hands over those to be confirmed and says a prayer that names each of these gifts, which first appear in Isaiah.

The first gift is wisdom, which enables us to see the goodness and greatness of the Lord. Wisdom fills life with flavor and helps us to be “salt of the earth,” preserving us and others from the corruption of sin. It enables us to instruct others in faith through the wisdom of the Church.

The second gift is understanding, given so we may comprehend the word of God and the truth of the faith. Our world is filled with the superficial and the ephemeral. God calls us to be persons of substance and integrity.

The Spirit bestows the gift of counsel, which guides us to discover God’s plan for our lives. God has made each of us for some definite purpose. He has a personal plan for our salvation.

Confirmation is a time for carefully discerning our vocation by listening to God’s voice.

The Spirit strengthens us with the gift of fortitude to overcome the temptations of evil and to do good, even at the cost of making a sacrifice.

Next comes the gift of knowledge. This is not knowledge in the technical sense, but knowledge which teaches us to find in creation the signs and impressions of God, to understand how God speaks in every age and how He speaks to us personally, inspiring our daily work with Gospel values.

Another gift is that of piety, which keeps the flame of love for our heavenly Father alive in our hearts, so as to pray to Him daily with the trust and tenderness of beloved children. Piety helps us to remember the fundamental reality of the world and life: God exists and expects a response to His invitation.

The seventh gift is fear of the Lord. We should have reverence for Him and for all those made in His image and likeness.

Today amid global crises, we see how important it is that each person should respect God and do His will. This fear of the Lord is not only a desire to do good or to carry out God’s will, but it also means being in awe in His marvelous Presence.

Returning to the gift of fortitude, I think of young people, who are under tremendous pressure; pressure to gain entrance into a good school; to be popular; to do well in sports. They face pressure with dating, sexuality, drugs and alcohol. Perhaps the most dangerous pressure they face is to believe these gifts of the Lord are make believe, a pious myth for simple and unscientific people.

Simon Peter, when Jesus was arrested, gave into the pressure.

He tried to save himself. He denied the Lord three times.

However, Jesus did not give up on him. He looked at Peter, and Peter wept bitterly. The Risen Lord returned to Peter and asked him thrice, “Simon, Son of John, do you love me?”

This is what Jesus wants to know. Do we love Him? After Pentecost, and the great outpouring of the Spirit, Peter boldly proclaimed the Risen Lord. He willingly underwent suffering and did not cease speaking of Him, even when it landed him in chains. Peter was taught by the Spirit to put faith first. May we learn from him and be transformed by the power and gifts of the Spirit.

Taking First Faith Steps Josh and Laura Kiger Help Others With Baptism, RCIA and Marriage Prep B Y BONNY VAN

When it comes to sharing and teaching the Catholic faith, two minds are better than one and, in this case, two hearts are better than one. That’s because Josh and Laura Kiger have a true love for sharing their faith as they help others prepare for their own life-long Catholic journeys through baptism, Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) and Pre-Cana.

“Our involvement in ministry started with Josh going through the RCIA journey and becoming Catholic,” said Laura, a cradle Catholic who grew up attending Catholic schools. “After Josh was fully initiated, we joined the RCIA Team [in 2016]. Shortly after we were married, we were invited to join the Pre-Cana ministry, and then we were approached about baptism prep.”

According to Laura, the invitation was key to the couple’s involvement in all of their ministries.

“Invitation is key to evangelization, parish life and ministry,” she said. “I’m not sure if I ever would have been brave enough to ask to join Pre-Cana ministry, but I was so happy to accept the invitation. Same for baptism prep. We never would have thought to seek it out, but we were so excited to get involved when someone reached out to us.”

“I think we were approached because of our age and how critical it is for some young families to see people in their own generation on fire with faith and giving back to the Church,” said Josh. “So many young people are choosing a different path these days for themselves and their children and it’s on all of us to meet them where they are and invite them to, or back to, Christ.”

The Kigers will celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary in November and they have been involved in these ministries and others at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church (IHM) in Anderson Township for nearly as long. Now, Josh also serves as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion while Laura participates in Bible study and IHM’s Women’s Wednesday group. And if that weren’t enough to fill their schedules, the couple has two children, Jude, 3, and Lily, eight months.

The couple rotates the once-a-month baptism classes with another couple while Pre-Cana is only two weekends per year.

“RCIA is the hardest to make time for now with children,” Josh said. “Once we had children, Laura has participated less actively in RCIA, public speaking being more my thing, but she still helps me through my planning for presentations.”

Nearby family support also helps the couple manage their time. “We were able to attend the Vigil this year and that was really, really lovely,” said Josh. “We’re all called to evangelize and to give back and to build up Christ’s Church on earth, and these ministries are one of the ways we get to do that.”

First Lessons in Faith Sewing Seeds of Faith in the Early Years

From the initial moments of life until death, children pay close attention to their parents’ attitudes, approaches and passions. They take on our personality traits and values not by formal instruction, but from just watching us.

Our kids will learn how important faith is according to how we live it.

PREPARE FERTILE GROUND

Though it’s paramount that we teach our children prayers and practices, it’s equally necessary for we parents tend to our own souls. We are made in the image and likeness of God (Gen. 1:26), and the whole of our lives is meant to be an imitation of our Creator. The Lord imprinted Himself in our humanity, so giving our hearts over to God will not only deepen our intimacy with Him, but also yield a stronger confidence in ourselves as well as a closer imitation of God’s mercy toward His own children.

Jesus spoke honestly in John 15:5, “Apart from me, you can do nothing.” It’s fact that a vine cannot function away from the branches, that a sheep will lose itself when it leaves the voice of the shepherd. If we parents pray, knowing we depend entirely on providence for everything, then we’ll begin to reflect God’s parenting in our own.

TEND WITH CARE

“Teach a child in the way he should go and when he is older, he will not depart from it” (Prov. 22:6) This proverb underscores the staying power of lessons taught in youth.

Our kids need to learn prayers, but we should check our expectations. Young souls have short attention spans and will likely get the wiggles when they’re supposed to be still. Keep prayer time brief and be patient with questions, inattention and curiosity.

Start with a short, daily prayer time. Just like a congregation learns responses through regular Mass attendance, children learn rote prayers when they hear them often. Thank God for graces and blessings, then invite them to do the same.

Ask God for needs and wants, so they will, too. Read from an illustrated Children’s Bible to introduce them to the kindness and power of Christ.

PREP FOR SUCCESS

The rubber really hits the road when we go to Mass with our little ones. Before heading out the door, make sure everyone uses the bathroom and feed children who don’t need to observe the fast before receiving Holy Communion. Meeting these basic needs will support good behavior.

Read the next Sunday’s Gospel to your kids during the week leading up to Mass. Have a conversation about it.

Though you might be inclined to take a seat in the back of the church, the best spot for a child’s participation in Mass is right up front. Quietly talk to your children – ask them where the priest is and what he’s doing. Use simple terms to talk about the mysteries of our faith: “Jesus is God and He sends the Holy Spirit to turn the bread into His body.

It’s a miracle.”

Remember that even when kids misbehave, distract others or get bored in Mass, just bringing them before God is an incredible grace. Nothing compares to presenting ourselves as humbled parents with the children God gave to us. The benefit is eternal life, salvation, grace and intimacy with Jesus – and so worth the challenge.

FRUITS OF OUR LABORS

The fruit of doing all of the above is a cultivated relationship between our children and the Lord. In witnessing our faith, they learn how to pray, how to trust and reverence before God. Of course, it’s easy to talk about it and a little more of an effort to put it into practice. We’ll learn just like our children, so while we’re trying to extend them grace, we should do the same for ourselves. Parenting in general is hard; parenting while trying to foster intimacy between child and God is harder.

The work is sacred, and Jesus upholds us with grace to do what He asks. It’s all possible because we’re fashioned in His image, and in drawing closer to Him ourselves, we’ll spread love of our Catholic faith in such a way that will carry on for generations.

THE 10 MOST IMPORTANT YEARS OF YOUR CHILD’S LIFE Ask a young couple who just had their first child what they dream of for their child’s life, and you’ll likely get some version of, “I just want them to be happy.” Ask an aging couple whose children are adults what they dream for their adult children, and you’ll likely get the same answer.

All parents want their children to be happy. As a parent, you do what you can to help your children become the person God created them to be – the best version of themselves. The scariest part? You have less time than you think.

Research from the Barna group, conducted over a threeyear period and discussed in the book Transforming Your Children Into Spiritual Champions, revealed three surprising – and somewhat alarming – outcomes regarding forming our children.

First, research showed a person’s moral foundations are typically formed by the time they are 9 – that includes your child’s beliefs about truth, meaning, purpose and right and wrong. And while those beliefs will be refined over time, research showed most people never experience a significant change in those beliefs.

Second, research showed that the majority of Americans come to an understanding of what Jesus’ life, death and resurrection mean to them personally by the time they are 12. Consider the fact that many Catholic parishes do not begin youth ministry until high school, but most of us form our beliefs about our personal relationship with Jesus far earlier than that.

Third, the data indicated that, for most people, spiritual beliefs are irrevocably formed as pre-teens. We’re talking 4th, 5th and 6th graders. Even dioceses where confirmation takes place in 8th grade, like our archdiocese, are likely swimming upstream when trying to form children into young disciples.

Bottom line? Whether you are thinking about your children or grandchildren, or you are a youth minister, or a priest who cares about the youth of your parish or simply a Catholic who cares about the future generations of our faith – you’ve probably got about 10 years to influence what they believe about Jesus, morality and the Catholic Church.

I’m not sure about you, but this research terrified me when I first heard it. It feels like we have so much time when we’re holding a newborn in our arms. But a day slips into a month, slips into a year, slips into a decade like sinking ships on a stormy sea. And all those “firsts” your children experiences before age 13 – First Communion, first reconciliation, first retreat, confirmation – are more important than we realize.

I couldn’t put it more starkly than this quote from the researcher: “In essence, what you believe by the time you are 13 is what you will die believing.”

So what should we take away from this research? Urgency.

Your family prayer life matters.

Speaking to your kids about faith matters.

Reading the Bible to your kids matters.

Holding Sunday Mass as a higher priority than sports or holidays matters.

They are digesting more than we realize at a young age.

Now that we’ve shined a light on just how little time we have to form these young ones, take some time to think about how you can step it up a notch and help the young kids in your life become the person God created them to be.

Journeys Revealed Monnin Shares Faith Through Publishing Personal Journals B Y SUS IE BE RGMA N

With humble, raw reverence and a hint of quiet confidence, Julia Monnin clutches her morning cup of coffee, prepared to share her journey. It’s a journey full of self-doubt, personal reflection and grace. A journey that led to the publication of her first book and the eventual formation of Journeys Revealed Ministry, a nonprofit organization located in Botkins.

to share who are intimidated by the notion, the process and the industry.”

Monnin knows first-hand just how intimidating it can be. After a year of prayerful discernment, she felt called to turn her spiritual journal, a collection of daily writings full of intimate life details, into a book. She was encouraged by advisors to keep the collection in journal form, inviting readers into her private thoughts and authentic self.

The publisher advised her that it wasn’t the right fit for their audience. The response was devastating, but looking back, Monnin can appreciate the significance of the decision. As the reality set in, she spent the next few months working to reset herself through more prayer and discernment. She continued to seek advice from authors, publishers and those within her faith community. She knew self-publishing was an option, but she was concerned about making sure the book looked professional. Then, one day when she was deep in prayer, a powerful thought struck her: “If a manger is good enough for the Savior of the World to be born in, then certainly self-publishing is good enough for your book.”

Through God’s timing and grace, she took a leap of faith and reached out to a marketing professional who was on her parish counsel, Kecia Flaute. As they each share their unique, humble perspective on how their paths crossed and partnership blossomed, Flaute reflected “It was the first time I could really see God working in my life. I had felt for quite some time that God was calling me to use my talents to serve

His Kingdom. So when I met Julia to learn more about her mission, it was like divine providence”.

Towards the end of 2018, Monnin self-published her book, The World is Noisy, God Whispers, and she began doing local speaking engagements to share her personal testimony, with the hope of inspiring others to do the same. Knowing the goal of the mission was not about making money or being on the best-sellers list, Monnin and Flaute formed a nonprofit to further drive the ministry to others. The formation of the board involved adding Laura Maurer as secretary and treasurer, and Father Sean Wilson as chaplain to the Board.

Under the holy guidance of their patron saints – St. Thérèse of Lisieux, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Francis de Sales and St. Teresa of Calcutta – the team focuses on “spreading the love of Jesus by sharing the stories of our souls, one intimate moment at a time” through written word, spoken word and one-on-one companionship.

The First Five Years Father Sean Wilson Reflects on His First Years as a Priest

Father Wilson noted that becoming a priest started as an idea, slowly becoming a reality over time. “I knew in high school [that I might want to be a priest] and I gradually began to take my faith more seriously,” Father Wilson said. “I got interested in the Church and what our Lord has continued to do.”

“It made the transition rather smooth,” Father Wilson said.

“Knowing everyone, too, was wonderful.”

And now, five years into the priesthood, Father Wilson said he couldn’t imagine being part of any other calling.

“There is a sense of it being five years; it seems rather natural,” Father Wilson said. “It seems part of your life, being a priest, that it’s hard to remember a time when it wasn’t the case.

However, there are new things every single day – whether it’s things with the people, or the administration or sacramental questions or whatever it may be, it is amazing to see how much happens every single day and it’s a great sign of what the Lord continues to do.”

While Father Wilson said being a priest is his favorite activity, but he also enjoys being outdoors and kayaking on local lakes. He also loves spending time with his family – along with his parents he has two brothers, both married, as well as a niece and nephew.

“I got to baptize both my niece and nephew,” Father Wilson said. “That has been a highlight of my priesthood.”

Father Wilson shared some advice for those aspiring to be

priests. “It’s all the Lord’s work. There are tough days. There are beautiful days, but in all of them, we simply get to be His servant. And that’s enough. The Lord does a whole lot that’s really visible, whether it’s having a difficult conversation or preparing a Sunday homily, it’s really all His, and so the better we come to know Him and love Him, the better we can imitate the Good Shepherd.”

THE DOMESTIC CHURCH & CATHOLIC SOCIAL DOCTRINE The Gospel of St. Matthew ends with the charge of Jesus to “make disciples of all nations, . . . teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Mt. 28:19-20). And in the very last words of Christ before His ascension, He tells His disciples, “you will be my witnesses . . . to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

Together, these last words of Jesus tell us both what we are to do, and how we are to do it. Sometimes called the “great commission,” the charge in Matthew is the foundation of the Church’s mandate to “evangelize”—to spread the “good message”—of the Gospel. The words from Acts tell us the primary way we accomplish that is not by argument, but rather by being faithful witnesses of this good news.

The family has a necessary role in this mandate. Indeed, from a chronological perspective, the family is the “first Church – the primary place we are evangelized and the most important public witness of the good news. In this context, the family is the primary model of what has become known as Catholic Social Doctrine – the four-fold body of teaching that demonstrates how the Gospel works in the world.

DIGNITY OF HUMAN LIFE

The foundation of social doctrine is the dignity of the human person. Sometimes this is articulated as respecting human life “from conception to natural death.” While this is correct, this formulation may not capture the full depth of the meaning of human dignity.

For example, being a witness to the dignity of human life begins before conception. It is not just about preserving and protecting life that has been conceived, but rather being 3 0 | T H E C A THOLIC TELE GR A PH

open to the possibility of new life. Even our evangelical Christian brothers and sisters who are opposed to killing the unborn and aged, have no problem with preventing them from being conceived in the first place. It is difficult to be a consistent witness to the goodness of lives that are if we are not welcoming of the lives that may be. As Pope St. John Paul put it in the encyclical, Evangelium Vitae, “contraception and abortion are . . . fruits of the same tree.”

Closing ourselves to the possibility of new life sends a message that a life’s dignity is dependent on our decision to bestow it. This is a false witness. We Catholics must be witnesses that the dignity of life comes from God, not from our personal whims.

SUBSIDIARITY

The doctrine of subsidiarity teaches us that social goals and challenges must be addressed at the most local and immediate level possible. As Pope Pius XI famously said in his 1931 encyclical, Quadragesimo Anno, it is both “gravely wrong to take from individuals what they can accomplish by their own initiative,” and “a grave evil . . . of right order to assign to a greater and higher association what lesser and subordinate organizations can do.”

In this context, the family is not only the first Church for most of us, it is the first unity of society. As such, the family is the primary locus of the care, nurture, and education of the human person. The family is the place where we learn individual moral responsibility, and familial support and nurture. While it is certainly true that many social goods can only be accomplished through larger units of society, this deference must only occur in those instances where they cannot be accomplished by the family.

SOLIDARITY

A Personal Touch Believe Art from the Heart in Shelby County Creates Personal Experience

When Teresa Harshbarger created a rosary for her niece’s wedding 18 years ago, little did she dream she was answering a call.

“The day I showed it to my mom, she very quietly said, ‘I have a feeling you’re going to be making lots of rosaries.’” To Harshbarger’s surprise, one lovingly created rosary was the first step in founding Believe Art from the Heart.

It all started while praying about where God might be calling her in the next season of her life. With a master’s degree in education, she was certain that would mean going back to the classroom. Instead, the mother of five young children said she had the clear sense that God was calling her to create jewelry.

Even though Harshbarger knew nothing about making jewelry, she heeded the message when both a friend and a family member felt the same call. The group created a collection of signature jewelry pieces that told a story of God’s love for creation, and thus, Believe Art from the Heart was born.

The next thing they knew, they were renovating a retail space that had been a garden center on County Road 25-A south of the village of Anna in Shelby County.

Now, the brightly painted shop that once housed garden tractors and lawnmowers is a workshop for both beads and souls.

“This is art from the heart of God to our hearts,” Harshbarger said. “We never want this to be just a business. This is a ministry.”

Together Harshbarger and Joyce Moeller, with the help of a cadre of volunteers, have created a space where anyone can sit and talk about faith and prayer, and create a one-of-a-kind rosary, bracelet or necklace. And each is marked with the Believe silver heart, a symbol of God’s love.

“Our goal is to immerse each person in the love of God,” Harshbarger said.

The rosary corner of the shop is a comfortable place to pick out the color of the beads and the design of

the cross, and to consider what the rosary is. “We talk about how we pray it and why we pray it. It’s a teaching moment,” Harshbarger said. “But it’s also about how uniquely and wonderfully God has made each one of us.”

Beads, crosses and materials come in a variety of colors, materials and designs. “Some children may want the rosary in their favorite color, or the color of their birthstone. One child wanted it in camouflage colors, and it turned out just beautiful.”

Harshbarger said price ranges can be determined when making an appointment for the consultation. “We take our time with each customer. One little boy spent 10 minutes picking out the crucifix for his rosary because he looked at the details on each one.”

Believe rosaries can be created for special moments such as First Communion Confirmation, weddings and anniversaries.

After the consultation, the rosary is handcrafted and prepared for delivery, complete with a scripture card specifically for that piece.

Behind the shop is a butterfly-themed tearoom where the Believe team hosts gatherings as small as two people, or as large as a prayer or study group. Harshbarger said they also host school groups to mark the seasons of the Church year.

WHAT IS “THEOLOGY OF THE BODY”?

This article is the start of an extended series in which I will reflect on, explain, and apply Pope St. John Paul II’s “Theology of the Body” to contemporary issues.

Have you heard of “Theology of the Body?” This term has gotten quite a bit of attention in Catholic circles in recent years, but many do not understand what it is or why it is relevant to them.

John Paul II saw his election as a sign that the Holy Spirit was calling him to present his teaching not only to the Polish people, but to the entire Universal Church. He decided not to publish his freshly completed manuscript, but bring it with him to Rome and use it as the basis for a long series of speeches delivered to the Church and the world at his weekly general audiences between 1979 and 1984.

Throughout, Pope John Paul II used the phrase “Theology of the Body” as a working title for his reflections. Today, those speeches have been re-assembled, re-translated, and presented anew under the title Man and Woman He Created Them: A Theology of the Body (trans. M. Waldstein, Pauline Books & Media).

WHAT DOES THE BODY HAVE TO DO WITH THIS?

At first glance, the term “Theology of the Body” may seem strange. Theology is about divinity and spirituality. What does the “body” have to do with this? Essentially, Pope St. John Paul II sets out to reflect on our common humanity, which is inherently bodily, and understand it in light of Divine Revelation (i.e., scripture and theology), philosophy and ordinary human experience. He is especially interested in how our body reveals our identity, our vocation and how it participates in Divine Love. In reflecting on the human body, one cannot help but encounter the reality of sex (i.e., that we are created male and female). Pope St. John Paul II does not shy away from this topic, but plunges headlong into it to illuminate our understanding of sexual identity, sexual difference, marriage and family.

It is important to point out TOB is not a break from Catholic tradition. Rather, it is a creative re-presenting of perennial truths about the human person in a way that appeals to the experiences and issues we face at the start of the Third Millennium. It helps us understand who we are, what we are made for, and how we are to live. It gives us a framework for addressing some of the most difficult moral and pastoral issues facing us today and points out a path to find our deepest fulfillment.

THAT TIME WE JOINED A PAGAN HOMESCHOOL CO-OP “I think we should join this pagan homeschool co-op.” Those are words you don’t hear every day. Yet, sure enough, about two years ago my wife made that announcement from the other end of the house. Sufficiently derailed from my work in the office, I joined her in the living room to try and make sense of this. We should join a what?

My wife laid out her reasoning: 1. This family opens their home to other families once a week for social and educational activities. 2. Their website is cheerful and friendly. 3. They welcome all families: big ones, small ones, weird ones, messy ones. 4. They promptly replied to my wife’s request for more information. 5. They’re not trying to proselytize anyone. 6. It’s inexpensive. 7. It’s not that far away.

That all sounded great, but I couldn’t get past the “pagan” part.

Exactly how pagan are they? Were there no Catholic co-ops we could join? I was concerned, to say the least. But, after talking to the lady who runs the co-op and researching other options in our area, my wife was convinced this was worth a shot.

THE LINE

Before you can appreciate the impact of this decision, you need to know something about my family: We’re not easy to accommodate. We’re loud. We’re messy. We’re awkward.

We’re needy. We break things. We require heaps of mercy and forbearance. As such, we’re always wondering, “Where’s the line?” What’s the mistake, offense or misbehavior that will finally make people say, “Enough”? Sometimes we can foresee where the line will be; other times we have to feel it out and hope for the best.

FEELING OUT THE PAGANS

When our family enters someone else’s space, we’re basically asking them, “Are we more important to you than your peace and quiet? Your sense of order? Your need to be in control?

Thanks be to God, when we entered this family’s home, they said yes every time, and they said it resoundingly. Far from just 3 6 | T H E C A THOLIC TELE GR A P H

putting up with us, they have invited us to join them for trips to the zoo and backyard barbecues. My wife has made close friends with the moms in the group, and the other kids are always excited when my kids arrive.

Speaking of my kids: So far they have broken two glass lanterns, spilled Tiki torch oil all over the family’s deck, eaten their food, invaded every room in their house, and even snuffed the life out of their pet goldfish (accidentally) and this family still – still! – welcomes us with open arms. Do you know what that’s called? Radical hospitality.

DEFYING EXPECTATIONS

Radical hospitality is more than providing coffee and donuts.

It means making someone feel welcomed, valued and affirmed far beyond expectations. It’s a hospitality that doesn’t count the cost. It’s a yes to the prospect of the other that establishes the other as the highest good.

This is the hospitality of Abram before the three visitors (Gen. 18:1-5), of Jesus at the feet of the apostles (Jn. 13:3-5), of the master of the feast before the poor (Lk. 14:12-14), of Mary before the transforming power of the Spirit (Lk.1:38).

What makes this hospitality so powerful and healing is that it’s rare and meets an intense desire. In a society that fosters egocentricity and obsessive cost calculation, it’s rare to be truly welcomed. It’s rare to be treated with the dignity you deserve.

It’s rare to be genuinely loved – and, at the end of the day, that’s all anyone really wants.

As Catholics, our families and our parishes are called to extend that kind of radical hospitality. Are you prepared to “remove your sandals before the sacred ground of the other” (Evangelii Gaudium, 169)? If not, why not?

Heaven’s Gain Cincinnati Couple Founded Ministry to Help Those Suffering the Loss of a Baby

After losing their fifth, ninth and tenth babies at different gestations, Jim and Donna Murpy felt called to serve families suffering the loss of a baby. Together, they founded Heaven’s Gain Ministries in Cincinnati. Heaven’s Gain Ministries nationally (HGM) helps families before, during, and after the birth of their baby. From the time a couple learns their baby has no heartbeat, HGM is there to help parents prepare “We listen to their concerns and explain what happens when the baby is born,” Donna said.

For those delivering their miscarried baby at home, they prepare parents for what they can expect to see during the miscarriage. “We offer a Certified Baby Loss Doula to serve families before, during or after the delivery of their baby, at home or in the hospital,” said Donna.

The doula also guides parents in determining what memorabilia they wish to keep and treasure, including photos, footprints, handprints and hospital bracelets.

“We have peer support coordinators to offer support, oneon-one or in a group setting. We recently added group support for people who are pregnant after a loss, “ Donna said.

For Catholics, the funeral and burial are important steps, but it does not stop there. The need for ongoing opportunities to heal is why Gate of Heaven

We have been blessed to go to those sacred grounds to reflect and remember all the precious gifts from God that we have lost,” said Jennifer.

When asking Donna and Jennifer what helped them and their husbands grieve, they both touched upon how their children’s lives are heaven’s gains. Jennifer hopes others who have had miscarriages and lost their babies will, “Believe and know that Jesus and his Blessed Mother Mary are listening.

5) EAGLE SCOUT COMPLETES STATIONS

Ethan Koran, a senior at McNicholas High School, recently completed his Eagle Scout project with the Comboni Missionaries.

For his project, he installed the Stations of the Cross at the Mission Center. Ethan, with Troop 694 at Immaculate Heart of Mary, designed and built the houses for each of the 14 stations that surround the Peace Garden, which was created by another Eagle Scout for his project several years ago.

FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD THROUGH PRAYER When I think about my dearest friends, I recall friendships that began in grade school, my first years of teaching and my marriage. These friendships are ones that have lasted through happy and sorrowful times and shared experiences.

These are people I know I can count on because they have shown their love and loyalty to me. Through kindness, compassion and respect, we build relationships with those who offer those characteristics back to us. But who is my bestie? That would be Jesus! He is constantly with me, guiding me to make right decisions, holding me up when I think I can’t do it on my own. Faith is a lifelong journey with our best friend. That relationship starts when we are young and grows in grace with each encounter with God. Is there a magic trick to engage our youngest Christians in a relationship with Jesus? The simplest answer is not in disguise: PRAY! Praying with and for your children is powerful. My son, Henry, and I choose a different prayer each night before bed and talk about who we want to include in our prayers. We always start by praying for him, Mommy and Daddy and Grandma and Grandpa and then we launch into friends, relatives, teachers, seminarians and priests, and others who we think need our prayers. It’s a great way to call to mind those people in our lives who are important to us, or those who may be struggling. Our heartfelt pleas allow our children to grow in empathy and look outside themselves. We help our children understand prayer doesn’t have to be just memorizing formal prayers. It can be a simple, “God, I need help!”

I taught religion in a Catholic school classroom for 22 years and witnessed many hearts on fire for the Lord. Children have a natural inclination toward the good and can be so innocent in their relationships and friendships. As a DRE, I visit classrooms to talk with our students and I see how excited they are to learn about Jesus. They reach out to God through song, enacting Bible stories and hearing His Word.

They talk about Jesus, they pray to Him and learn about 4 2 | TH E F INAL WORD

His life and ministry. They ask questions about the greatest mysteries of our faith. The most rewarding conversations are about their understanding of Jesus’ love for them. To me, there is nothing more divine than watching our children receive Jesus in the Eucharist, especially for the first time.

During their First Communion, their joy is boundless and their hearts are pure. Their friendship with God reaches new heights that will be with them every time they welcome Him into their hearts.

Prayer permeates our lives, providing a strong foundation for creating an ongoing conversation with God. It is essential to guide our children in building a friendship with our Lord through prayer.

Teaching children types of prayers and how we use prayer is important, but teaching them how to listen for His answer can be more difficult. I ask my students how we know God is talking to us – does He text, email, call us on the phone?

No, but we can lead them to discover how to listen to their conscience and their heart to find His answers to their pleas.

Throughout their first years in religious education, we foster our children’s love for God and teach them to know Him and know He loves and knows each of them. As they get older, we build on that foundation and allow our students to maintain and build that friendship through sacraments, serving both the Church and our community and worshiping together. Just as we rely on our closest friends, our children can learn to rely on Christ when we keep Him close and grow deeper in our love for Him.
