The meeting was facilitated by Councilwoman

Lula Davis Holmes, Councilman Jawane Hilton, Mayor Pro Tem, Elito Santarina and Carson Sheriff Captain, Chris Marks.

The standing room only crowd heard from Captain Marks as he described an upswing in auto thefts and gang

activities. He also spoke about a new law that went into effect last November reducing many felony crimes to misdemeanors. “This law has had a drastic affect on actual arrests” said Captain Marks. (see Sheriff on page 11)

With each issue of the Carson Courier we publish I am reminded of two things, I love Carson, and I love my career choice.

I have an opportunity to affect real change, inform people and create a newspaper, to quote Mrs. Gill Smith, “We are proud to share with people outside of Carson.”

I believe Carson is a great place to live and work. It is filled with homeowners who take pried in their properties and as evidenced by the recent overflow at the community meetings, not afraid to get involved.

A recent article in the Daily Breeze implied that there is a racial division between the African American and Filipino residents in Carson because of the current recall effort involv-

ing City Clerk, Jim Dear.

I say, “Don’t believe the hype.”

Carson has become a very diverse city. There are residents with different cultural, religious and political beliefs.

However; we are all members of the human race as soon as we recognize that we will not be manipulated by the media or a self serving politician.

The recall effort against Jim Dear is not because of a few unhappy African American residents, it is because RESIDENTS OF CARSON are unhappy with his job performance. Those residents have a right to circulate petitions without interference, as he has a right to defend himself.

Miss Teen Carson Scholarship Pageant Takes Center Stage August 28

The search is on for young Carson females who will be crowned as the 2015 Miss Carson and Miss Teen Carson.

The winners will be selected at a pageant scheduled for August 28, at 6 p.m. at the Congresswoman Juanita MillenderMcDonald Community Center, located at 801 E. Carson Street in Carson.

Candidates will compete in the areas of sports and evening wear, short speech, an essay, and question and answer.

Seats are available for purchase to attend the event at $5 per person for ages 13 and up, $3 for ages 4-12, and free for ages 3 and under.

The crowned 2015 Miss Carson and Miss Teen Carson will each

receive a $2,000 scholarship fund, in addition to many other prizes.

They will also get the opportunity to represent Carson in the Miss California and Miss Teen California Pageant as well as in various city events.

“All the contestants of the 2015 Miss Carson and Miss Teen Carson have already built a firm foundation for success simply by competing,” said Carson’s Mayor Albert Robles. “All of them are winners. They have gained the value of confidence, self-worth, discipline, magnetism of character, as well as the rewards of cooperation and fruitfulness of perseverance,” added Robles.

Pain, loss and suffering invites you to learn that you cannot control, explain, fix, change or understand all things and all people. You can pray for your children, parents, friends your "ex" or your boss, but you can't change them. You lead by example, but you can't change them. You can accept them or draw boundaries, but you can't change them.

We get frustrated with other people, because they don't act the way we want them to act.

Peace and maturity comes from accepting that we can't control or change people. It's not easy, but we can learn to communicate and adapt. Yes, it takes practice, especially when they are family or people you work with daily. Here are 7 things to think about...

1. Sometimes people don't change. Their mask just falls off.

2. You can't change people.

You can lead them with guidance, love and example.

3. Consider how hard it is for you to change and you'll soon realize how exhausting it is to try to change others.

4. Everyone wants the gift of acceptance.

5. Change is always met with resistance.

6. You cannot change the people in your life. But you can change the kind of people you choose to be around.

7. Learn to have boundaries for the people who create drama, chaos, pain or conflict with your values, goals, personality and lifestyle."

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) beginning this semester will teach about the dangers of "sexting".

The LAUSD is proactively getting in front of what they believe to be a growing problem in our social culture.

Teachers should tackle sensitive issues, but there are other significant constants you hope are being addressed, as well.

For instance, it should be critical to know all you can about how the brain works and areas that can help improve its' function.

Our brain reviews infinite possibilities, including right or wrong, moral or immoral, fight or flight, etc., all of which requires the utmost level of an efficiency to ensure the correct interpretation of incoming information.

As the brain is the ultimate in decision making, maybe long before speaking on a symptom of social ills like sexting, without doubt the collective learning should center on what makes the brain function at its optimum capacity. A learning topic should address the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) that is responsible for the development of new

neurons in the brain or nerve tissue, and therefore new memories.

Low amounts of BDNF lead to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and diabetes disease. In view of that, the unlawful activity of sexting is undoubtedly generated from an improperly functioning brain. Observing a young person pouring a sugary drink into their mouth is unfortunately a common occurrence.

Nevertheless, processed sugar quickly enters the blood stream, and eventually will make its way to the brain.

The big concern is how processed sugar can block membranes and in so doing slow down neural communication (nervous system). Processed sugar increases free radical inflammatory stress on your brain.

Processed sugar causes brain neurons to misfire and send erroneous messages that take time and energy to sort out, making it harder to think clearly.

So when you want to address proper social strategies you first may need to tighten up how the brain is treated. Our brain uses 65% of the body's glucose, but too much or too little glucose can have a detrimental effect on brain function.

Science classes should be all over this information and show clearly how eating processed sugar can be very detrimental to attention span, mood stability, all the way to doing the right thing in social settings.

I have decided for this week’s column to be a continuation from the last edition. I have met many nursing students and individuals from the Carson community that have a passion for starting a nursing career. Many believe that becoming a nurse is too difficult or because of certain obstacles feel that their goal will never become a reality. Often, trials and tribulations can make it difficult to succeed in our goals—that is a fact; however my belief is that trials are what strengthen us. I also believe that sometimes obstacles are not always a negative event but a test to help to build, challenge and prepare us for the next level of success.

Many things come to mind when I reflect on my nursing journey with the start of school and the struggles I went through to become successful.

The first day of my nursing career began on January 19, 1993 with a major problem! My career was starting at the end of my marriage. You see my divorce was finalized on the same day that I was to begin the nursing program at Los Angeles Southwest College. That January date was the most emotionally stressful and taxing day that I have ever experienced.

Spending 10 hours at a Los Angeles courthouse enduring litigation, mediation and finalization left me mentally and physically exhausted. I left the courthouse, though, determined to become a nurse. I knew that giving up was not an option.

The nursing program started at 6 p.m. I had to be dressed in my nursing uniform, so I hurried across town and lit-

erally changed my clothes in the car. Then, I quietly entered the classroom and sat in the first vacant chair. The instructor smiled and handed me a syllabus.

It was as if she knew what I had just been through. At that point, I knew it would be the beginning of an adventure. I also had the prescription for becoming a successful nurse: persistence.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” I encourage you to take the first step towards your future as a registered nurse. It worked for me and I know it will work for you.

I hope that this issue has inspired you to take the next step and to keep pushing towards your goal for becoming a registered nurse. You won’t regret it.

Say What??

From the fruit of his mouth, a man’s stomach is filled; with the harvest from his lips he is satisfied. (Proverbs 18:20) God was serious when He created the tongue. He knew that it could cause trouble. So He gave us two gates to help control it: Our teeth and our lips. James 3:12 says: “The tongue can no man tame”.

But there is hope: God can.

“From the fruit of his mouth, a man’s stomach is filled…” So we should get ready to eat the harvest of our words.

Words are powerful. As you know, God created the universe with words.

He said – then He saw what He said. We inherited that ability from God, our Father. We create with our words a harvest of what we have said. We say- then we see what we said.

We must be impeccable with our words. We carelessly curse ourselves and others:

• “This job (kids or whatever) will be the death of me” (Oh no!)

• “My head (feet, neck or other body part) is killing me” (What a way to go!)

• “That person is heading for trouble” (Stop it!)

• “I will never get out of debt” (Really?)

• “This is driving me crazy” (Excuse me, I have to leave…)

• “I’ll never find a husband/wife” (Just as you say.)

You get the point. If we create with our mouth and will eat the fruit thereof, we have to be careful that we do not curse ourselves and bring forth “bitter fruit”. Avoid the “boomerang” effect – the curses we fling at others don’t affect them, they come back to the transmitter, that being the person who said it.

Let us guard our speech, cut our words in half, and think before we speak. Let’s make our words helpful and kind, work harder at listening and build others up.

While lenders tend to hold high-balance loans in their portfolio, they usually sell most mortgages because that’s the easiest way a lender can generate

cash to make new mortgages.

Without the secondary mortgage market, lenders wouldn’t be able to originate as many mortgages as they do.

Investors like snapping up mortgages because they’re backed by a tangible asset that you can see and touch, and that builds value over time — your home. Generally, house values go up, but in the event that they don’t and a borrower defaults, the equity in the home, or your down payment, is intended to cover this loss. This is why most lenders restrict a mortgage’s loan-to-value ratio, or LTV, to 80% of the house value.

Does this sale affect me, the borrower?

Yes, and it starts at the application process. But you shouldn’t be worried; it’s nothing you haven’t probably already heard about, especially if you’re been doing your homework.

(And law protects you from abuses by the new owner of your loan).

For a lender to be able to sell in the secondary mortgage market, the loans need to meet the requirements of the investor buying them; it makes sense that investors are willing to pay more for higher-quality mortgages.

are underwritten so that they can be sold for the best possible price. This is why underwriting guidelines can be strict and why lenders want to see proof of employment and income to make sure you can afford to repay the loan without stretching your budget.

The interest rate you’re offered also reflects the price that investors will pay for your mortgage — and lenders use all kinds of info such as credit score and debt-to-income ratios to determine your overall mortgage-worthiness (read: likelihood of repayment). It’s easier to sell a mortgage in the secondary market when an investor is confident the borrower is unlikely to default.

What happens to borrowers who can’t repay?

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) works to protect someone who is struggling to pay the mortgage. Even though a new company now owns the loan, this company still has to follow standards to collect on a delinquent mortgage. To prevent servicer abuses, servicers are required to reach out to borrowers to help them solve the problem through options such as a loan modification or short sale before foreclosing on a loan.

From Compton to Morehouse: Tyrese Pays for a Young Man’s College Tuition By. Khadijha J.

A few months back, I had the opportunity to interview and write an article on Lorenzo “Zo The Motivator” Murphy about his experience with applying and being accepted to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia as well as branding himself as a motivational speaker. During the interview, Murphy mentioned Tyrese Gibson, R&B singer and actor, as one of the people that inspires him.

Shortly after the interview, Tyrese contacted Murphy and has taken him under his wing. As a mentor and a huge supporter of Murphy, Tyrese has the internet buzzing after his recent Instagram post promising to pay for his college tuition. In a recent Instagram post, Tyrese states, “Why did I decide to put this young kid from Compton through college?? Because I dream with my eyes open and this year I watched a true living legend, Tom Joyner, get on stage and give the most moving speech about why he has raised and donated over 65 million dollars and put close to 30,000 African American kids into college. I decided at that moment I needed to do something”.

Murphy thanks Tyrese with an Instagram post Wednesday (August 12) for contributing to his future as a Morehouse man. He writes, “As of today I begin my journey as a Man of Morehouse. I am beyond grateful and thankful to be a part of such a great legacy. None of this would be possible without God, @tyrese, the support from my family and of course, my relentless hard work. Annually, Morehouse is around 45k-50k and as you can imagine, that is a lot of money. I thank God for placing Tyrese in my life. It is because of him believing in me and investing in my future, that I am able to receive my education. I am amongst the worlds greatest leaders and I want to thank Tyrese for giving me the opportunity to be able to pursue my academic and career endeavors at Morehouse College”.

Murphy is increasing in popularity across social media with his motivational posts. We look forward to seeing him do more amazing and inspiring things at Morehouse.

Why School?

You know why we have arts as an elective because it is used to bring out our special talent.

School is really good for you. Did you know that school really helps you interact physically, mentally, and socially? Gym is so important, it keeps us in shape.

We take Math to learn the fundamentals, or the code and laws of our universe; literature is so you sound smarter, and have a great vocabulary and you don’t lack common sense.

Science pretty much teaches us about our earth. History is to learn about how we are and how this world is right now.

Art is not just drawing, painting and coloring it is also music, dancing, and theater. Many students have art within their family history and ancestors. Art is somewhere people can feel welcomed and comfortable, also they can express how they feel and who they are.

Last but not least are different languages. Many schools often teach French and Spanish. I take Spanish and my teachers always say we are going to have a better life if we learn a second language.

In America we have a huge Latino population and learning Spanish makes sense.

Honestly, I love school. If it ever gets really hard, don’t give up, remember why we need to learn these subjects and keep pushing. You will appreciate it. Life will become great.

Most clubs are forced to settle for going with a strong defensive backstop, and taking any added pop as an extra bonus.

Yaz has greatly exceeded these expectations with the bat, and he was the second catcher up behind rival Buster Posey on the National League All-Star Team.

In addition, with Pederson replacing Kemp as one of the three Dodgers starting outfielders, the team’s speed and athleticism experienced a major upgrade. Kemp is considered one of the worst defensive outfielders in baseball at tender age of…30. His 2014 fielding percentage was a weak .950, along with an ugly -22.4 UZR and -26.5 Def. Ellis has become a crucial leader and veteran presence for the Dodgers clubhouse, a mentor for the younger rising star Grandal, and personal catcher/best friend to ace Clayton Kershaw. The two have become a solidified platoon, as Ellis has accepted and embraced his new role.

Having Ellis working closely with Grandal each day while handling a somewhat volatile Dodgers pitching staff has proven to be a tremendous lift for Yasmani’s growth and the team’s overall chemistry. Both Ellis and Yaz have received high praise from their pitchers and teammates for their tenacity and work ethic.

The Yaz-Manian Dodger was once just a kid from La Habana, Cuba. He went to high school and college in Miami, and was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the first round of the 2010 amateur draft. Although Yaz is 26 now, he still wears braces, and I believe he will continue to get better and mature with the Dodgers. I thought it was also a nice move when considering team dynamics, as the Dodgers had recently loaded up on Cuban talent with guys like Yasiel Puig, Alex Guerrero and Erisbel Arruebarrena. There are always a lot of underlying clubhouse and personality intricacies behind the scenes of a large team, and I feel that it’s important for the latino and especially latino migrant players to be surrounded by other guys that have a shared culture and language.

The fact that Grandal is a bilingual catcher could also have a positive effect communicationwise on the Dodgers mostly latino bullpen as well…(Yes, that last sentence could be a stretch, but the Dodgers bullpen could use any glimmer of hope at this point.)

The Padres felt Grandal was worth trading away for Matt Kemp, but only one of them was an All-Star in 2015.
