I have learned some very valuable lessons in my lifetime.

Lessons that enhance my very being. Treat people the way I want to be treated, don’t smoke or use illegal drugs, take care of my children, and to the best of my ability keep God the center of my life are just a few of the “gems” I try to live by.

Another valuable lesson I try to adhere to is “listen more than I talk.” I find that when this life principal is applied, I have a greater understanding of what the other persons thoughts and feelings are, giving me the opportunity to respond intelligently.

I saw a grave violation of this life lesson at the September 17th City Council meeting.

At this meeting speaker

after speaker, during the public comments insulted, ridiculed, criticized, and chastised the Carson City Council for launching an investigation of the City Clerk. Terms like “Kangaroo Court” were tossed around by concerned residents and the City Clerks own attorney. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, an intelligent person wants their opinion to be based on facts.

The facts of this investigation to date, are, seven employees came to the City Manager with complaints about the City Clerk, the City Manager found enough validity in the complaints to ask the City Council to launch an investigation. Everyone did their job.

The investigation was launched by the CITY MANAGER not the Carson City Council.

This fact was repeated several times yet it fell on deaf ears.

When we listen more than we speak we show maturity and empathy, both of which were lacking on September 17th.

As a journalist it is my responsibility to objectively report the news. I take that oath very seriously. As I shared with an elected official this week, I don’t get caught up in personalities or politics I have a hunger for the truth.

Even if the truth means I have to change, I want to know the truth.

I believe all people should know the truth. It is not for me to decide what the truth is but to seek out a story and all of its known parts and report the story. That is what a straight news article does.

There are other type of articles that allow for your opinion.

Editorials allow for ones opinion to be shared. The editor of a paper typically shares on topics that reflect the opinion of the paper. When I write an editorial comment, it comes from my heart

based on what I have learned over the years up until the very point in which I write. Reporting about elected City Officials not upholding their oath to serve the people in a City equally and fairly is not my favorite type of article. In fact, I love a feel good story. But it is my responsibility in spite of what an elected official thinks of me or the paper, to report the truth.

Understanding my role and my responsibility, I will continue to be objective and tell the truth while being objective. There’s a saying that says, “Don’t shoot the messenger.” I am simply the messenger. If you find there is a message not being reported you have a right to write a letter to the Editor and voice your concerns.

As always, I enjoy serving the City of Carson in this role as the Managing Editor of The Carson Courier. If you have a story you feel needs to be told contact us and we will take your idea into consideration. If it is factual and relevant we would love to report on that story. Exercising Our Rights

The XV Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color or previous condition of servitude.”

Yet, in order for one to receive their civil rights, equal rights or the right to vote the following situations had to happen: A. Lynching’s B. Bombings C. Marches over Bridges and into Hostile territory D. Boycotts E. A 1965 “Voting Rights Act” F. And inexcusable long lines at the voting polls

So, if history has bared the facts of the suffering and the sacrifices of exercising or the attempt to exercise ones precious right to vote,

then we truly “Cannot go back”, we must Vote!

Now, is the time that we need to exercise our rights to vote for a “Recall” to circumvent any further unethical practices or corruption in our City.

Also, most importantly, if we are to preserve the right to vote, we must make every effort to vote in the 2016 “Presidential” election.

A Nurse’s Perspective for Sexual Healing

There is a large amount of proof surrounding how what we eat manipulates the outcome of our health. In particular, men can help reduce the risk of developing an enlarged prostate gland, as well as lessen the severity of unhealthy symptoms by sustaining suitable eating habits.

For clarity, the prostate is a gland about the size of a walnut, and is part of the reproductive system in the male body. Sadly, an enlarged prostate (also known as BPH - Benign Prostate Hyperplasia) will cause serious problems such as excessive urinating, traces of blood in the urine and/or changes in the color of urine.

Although such problems are a lot more common in middle-aged and older men, all the same due in part from what we choose to eat, prostate problems can affect men of any age.

For example, men who routinely consume extra calories over recommended daily dietary guidelines are way more likely to develop prostate problems, as compared to those who stay within good quality eating principles.

That is because there is a direct link between obesity, high

blood sugar and BPH.

Whenever a man has an elevated glucose level they are three times more likely to have an enlarged prostate.

Consequently, even though eating processed sugar does not necessarily lead to high blood sugar, diet is critical toward eating less processed sugar as part of helping to prevent prostate cancer.

Processed sugar will inflame the prostate and thereby create problems, particularly when it is included in processed foods that are very high in trans-fats.

Basically, anything made using partially or whole hydrogenated vegetable oil, margarine or shortening are all unhealthy for the prostate gland.

For example, processed food items, such as pastries, canned soups, and frozen entrées commonly use hydrogenated oil.

Highly processed foodstuff typically adds sugar and whenever we eat it rarely do we think just how much sugar causes inflammation in our body.

Opportunely, by knowing this information can make it easier to value the importance of cutting down or completely eliminating added sugar in order to

decrease the pressure on the prostate gland.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends per day that men consume no more than 9-teaspoons of added sugar (150 calories), and women consume no more than 6-teaspoons of added sugar (100 calories).

The AHA developed these recommendations to help reduce heart disease, in addition to helping prevent problems with many other parts of the mind and body that can be injured from eating too much processed sugar.

For over fifty years, considerable world medical research focuses on preventing cancer, and during this same time span American eating patterns have to a large extent become quite unruly.

So, be mindful that cancer cells fuel their growth on processed sugar in the body, thereby giving good reason to live SugarAlert!

I received many positive responses from the readers of the “Carson Courier” regarding Part 1 of “Sexing Over 60—Is it Taboo?” and as promised this week’s column will focus on Part II. I hope that this column has provided informative medical information and has enhanced the lives of the residents of Carson as well as improved the sexual health of the women and men that reside in the Carson Community.

Women and Viagra

In the last column of “The Pub,” I discussed the “little blue pill,” and the effects that the drug has on men. I also mentioned that women are being prescribed Viagra to enhance their sexual performance.

Although Viagra is an alternative for sexual impotence in women, many natural remedies can be attempted before taking a sexual enhancement drug such as Viagra.

The most important aspect of improving sexual health is to have a complete women’s health physical exam to ensure that there are no medical conditions that interfere with your ability to become aroused or sexually active.

Some of the natural remedies are: relaxation (such as having a massage with your partner before intimacy or at your favorite salon), drinking a glass of wine (not too much though, excessive alcohol may cause depression). Eating a wellknown aphrodisiac such as oysters that contain zinc, which is known to increase fertility, is another option.

A natural herbal remedy called “gingko balboa,” is known to increase blood flow to sex organs. A proper diet, weight loss if needed and exercising (which increases blood flow to sexual organs) is another natural remedy—and is by far the best natural remedy—to increase sexual performance in my opinion. As with all recommendations it is imperative to consult your physician before attempting alternative medications or herbs.

Depression

Focusing on mental health is a component of sexual health that sometimes may be overlooked or not discussed during your doctor’s visit. Being healthy mentally helps to enhance sexual health. Depression is a major condition that inhibits intimacy. Make sure that your health

examination includes an assessment of your mental health. Depression is a major deterrent to overall optimal sexual health.

The purpose of anti-depressants is to alter the chemical balance in your brain. Some commonly prescribed anti-depressants are: Cymbalta, Elavil, Lexapro, Paxil and Prozac.

Unfortunately, one major side effect of taking anti-depressants is a decline in your libido. Libido is defined as “sexual desire.” In women, depression causes a loss of interest in sexual activity and decreases orgasms. Men experience a loss of libido and erection during depressive episodes. It is important to discuss with your doctor or nurse that you are experiencing a decrease in sexual arousal or libido because depression may be the cause.
