The late Bishop Walter Hawkins wrote a song in the 80’s that says, in part, “Tragedies are common place, all kids of diseases, people are slipping away, the economy’s down, people can’t get enough pay, as for me all I can say is “THANK YOU LORD for all you have done for me. No matter what you are going through, look for ways to say thank you Lord.
Having a health scare involving my heart taught me, it can always be worse.
During this holiday season, I challenge all of my readers to count your blessings, instead of looking at what you “don’t have” and I am sure you will see, you have so much more to be thankful for. Happy Holidays!!

For many the new year means "out with the old and in with the new." This school of thought often leads to people starting new projects and by March losing steam and leaving lofty goals unfinished. This year do something different. This year get in touch with the desires of your heart, chose one thing you really want to accomplish and commit to achieving just one goal. Many experts suggest breaking goals down to small
measurable goals and achieving those goals so you don't become overwhelmed. I have found great success using this method. One personal goal I have this year for The Carson Courier is to report on more local stories and to reach more residents. This is a goal that involves you the reader. As the Managing Editor my greatest goal is to make sure we are a community paper. This is a goal that requires resident input. Please help me reach my personal goal by contacting me and letting me know what stories you would like to see covered. As the new year quickly approaches we tend to look over our shoulders thinking about the woulda, coulda and shoulda. We tend to look back at the struggles, unfinished goals, hurts, disappointments, opportunities lost or the loved one missing at the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner table.
As I write this column I can think of those things that cause my heart to be troubled. But I choose to listen to a great inspiring song in the background now that lifts my spirit. I realize it is a choice to rejoice even when life is a mystery and full of pain. I’m listening to Hezekiah Walker’s song “Gratefulness.” I am grateful for the things that You have done. Yes, I’m grateful for the victories we have won. I could go on and on and on about Your works because I’m grateful, grateful, so grateful just to praise you Lord. Flowing from my heart are the issues of my heart…it’s gratefulness. What issues are flowing from your heart? Are those things complaints or gratitude…drama or peace….worry or worship…stressing or counting your blessings?
Remember your past successes. Remember God's power within you. Remember the resources you already have. Remember the relationships (professional and personal) that could

be a source of help and ideas. Write down the pros and cons of your circumstances. Seeing them clearly on paper will help you become clear and take action. Pray asking God to order your steps and then pray for the courage to trust and follow through. Wear you thinking cap. There is a solution. It may require you to do something different and out of your comfort zone. You may need to ask for assistance, delegate and collaborate with others. Or this time, you may have to go it alone. Your solution may be revealed to you only in part or you may have to make a sudden change. You may not understand how your steps are being ordered or you lack confidence. Anger, denial and depression only add to your problem. Whatever issue you're dealing with --- know that your behind will follow your mind. If your train of thought is negative, you are doomed to crash. Start thinking positive and creative thoughts. Don't allow past blunders to blur your vision for victory. You are smarter than you give yourself credit for.

Winter Wonders For High Schoolers by Niahani Moultry
It’s the most wonderful time of year, which means winter break has begun for high school students.
to be with their friends during break, there are many things one can do around their house such as cleaning or decorating rooms, and DIY projects.
However some students are stuck in their houses all break with nothing to do. This never ending cycle has students looking for a solution that can help their minds and bodies stay active throughout break. Well look no further, here are ten ways teenagers can productively spend their winter break.
Studying the material taught before going on break in a group, or alone is an easy way for students to keep their minds focused on school. This also prevents students from falling behind when they go back to school. Find a job, not only will this keep students busy they will also be learning new skills while getting paid, and who doesn’t like money.
Call a friend and make plans, simply going out for lunch can lead into other exciting events, and getting out of the house to spend time with good company can turn any bad day upside down. For students who don’t care
Take a trip to the local library or bookstore, students can find a book
that sparks their interest; books have been known to take readers everywhere without ever leaving their couch.
Join one of the many volunteer groups that range from assisting the elderly to keeping our local environment clean. Spend time with family, often times students are so busy with school work they don't have time for family, winter break is the perfect opportunity to be with loved ones. One of the worst things a student can do during their winter break is sleep in and be inactive. Life is beautiful go out and enjoy it!

Christmas with the Dominguez Sisters An Afternoon of Living History and Holiday Spirit Carson Courier Wire Services
December 1, 2015, Rancho Dominguez,
The museum would like to invite the public to their Christmas with the Dominguez Sisters event. It will take place on December 12, from 3pm-5pm. The afternoon will be filled with many activities the whole family can enjoy.
These include, tours of the museum every 15 minutes, a visit from Santa, a toy drive with Fire Dept. Station 17. Children will also be able to make tree ornaments and luminaries while visiting. The afternoon will close with the tree lighting and carolers at 4:45pm. Those interested in donating toys can bring a new unwrapped toy to the museum.
Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum is located in Rancho Dominguez, CA and is a non profit museum that offers free tours to the public and schools. The museum covers the history of Rancho San Pedro and the early California history. Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum is a California Historical Landmark and in 1976 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior.

African American Owned Los Primos Landscaping is Coming To Carson By Doris Molo
Antonio Brisco is his name, and all things green and growing outside is his game. Well, it is one of his passions; the other passion is serving God as he is the Associate Pastor of New life Christian Fellowship Church in Los Angeles. Rev. Brisco is a fully licensed Gardener and has been in business for three years. He takes both assignments seriously.
Los Primos Landscaping and Gardening Service is coming into its own. When asked about his choice of names for his business, he explains: “It was inspired by its meaning which is “My Cousins”. We have an immediate family of a few or many; but most of us have a host of cousins. Cousins can become ready playmates as children or best friends as adults. Cousins are pretty handy to have, they are our extended family. That is how I look at people; we are all connected one way or another. By community, by sport teams, by politics, by patriotism, by our God and sometimes, we are connected by property lines and a lot of times we are connected by lawns”. “The way we keep our property up, affects our neighbor and our neighborhood. A well kept lawn can bring a smile to anyone’s face! It makes home owners seem responsible and accountable”.
A question that came up
in conversation was the demise of the Black Gardener. Where are they? His answer was insightful. “The Black Gardner found it difficult to survive because of the influx of Gardner’s who could underbid their price points. This made it almost impossible for them to make a living. With this phenomena taking place, Black Gardening started to decline. Father’s no longer “passed the business” down to their sons because it was not a viable way to make a living and support a family. The market was corned and made little room for African American gardeners/landscapes to stay afloat”
I am a full service gardener/landscaper; I have a team that will design, cut, weed, plant, and manicure. We fertilize lawns using products that are not harmful to the environment, children or pets. I love what I do; it shows in my work; if a team member doesn’t like the work; they don’t work for me.

The Carson Courier has started a new program that will recognize Carson area businesses that provide excellent customer service. “The Carson Courier Superior Customer Service Award” is the brainchild of Courier Publisher, James Thomas. “People always complain about bad customer service. Not only do they complain about it, they tell others yet those businesses that stress customer service are seldom recognized” he said. “The idea came to me after having lunch at the “Shakey’s” located at 665 E. Del Amo Blvd.” Their staff was so attentive to every customer I decided to honor them with the first award.” The community can nominate businesses for the award, however, they cannot be family members, employees, or suppliers. So what’s Allison’s movie about and why is it award worthy? I had the pleasure of seeing one of the first cuts and Allison nailed the term romantic comedy. Allison writes about an issue most won’t talk about but many face. He takes a serious issue and uses humor and a great story line to create an award winning romantic comedy. When the young healthy upwardly mobile music- mogul, Bronson is faced with painful hemorrhoids which interfere with his free loving life style he’s forced to take a look inward and decide what’s more important “Love” or “Swag”. After eating food from a hole in the wall, Bronson wakes up
with a pain in his lower back area. He visits the doctor and finds out he has hemorrhoids. While he is in pain and sheepishly faces the procedure his female doctor is unsympathetic and subjects him to the rubber band therapy. Horrified Bronson returns to work in pain. He has an important meeting with a potential client who is interested in doing more than just business. When Bronson is unable to fulfill her personal desires she makes a rap song mocking his ineptness and the song goes viral. One can imagine how this scenario plays out when you add in bad advice from his “wingman” and the introduction of a possible love relationship with his beautiful intern. Expect to laugh and be thoroughly entertained with this Long Beach native’s first feature film. Look for #LoveSwag on DVD and Video on Demand this Christmas.

Meet 21 Year Old Rev. Welton Pleasant III by Doris Molo
Many of us are so caught up in “being served” we forget who we are “to serve” (Welton Pleasant, III)
It is exhilarating to be involved in the “first” of something. The first day of spring, baby’s first steps, your first car; it is just inherently uplifting. I had the opportunity to hear a young preacher’s first sermon. Welton Pleasant III is 21 years old; I am impressed with how God is using this young man. I sat down with him to talk about his promising ministry. I am not sure if I should address you as Rev. Pleasant, Minister Pleasant or just Welton. So before I go any further, how should I address you? You can call me Welton. I am fine with that.
On November 1, 2015, you preached your first sermon at Christ Second Baptist Church in Long Beach, Ca. I know your dad, Rev. Welton Pleasant II, is a renowned preacher/teacher; as an up-andcoming preacher, how might your ministry differ from your father’s style.
It will differ in a lot of ways due to the fact that I don’t want to be anyone else in the pulpit but myself. I have been watching my dad for 21 years and he is an outstanding preacher. One of the first things he told me going into preaching was “Don’t try to be like anyone else”.
Tell us about your first sermon and why you chose the scripture you did and what message did you want to really get across? I preached from the gospel of John chapter five verses one through nine. I titled it “How bad do you want it?” I wanted to get across that sometimes it matters how bad we really want something. Sometimes Christians go through things and the only reason our situations don’t change is because our will is not in place. That’s why Jesus asked the man, “…who had an infirmity thirty and eight years”, “Do you want to get well”? He wasn't asking to mess with the sick man; He was asking to see “How bad do you really want it?” A lot of us say we want our situation to change, but don’t do anything to move in a direction of change, because our desire and want to change is not in place What have you been learning about God in the past year? In your quiet time, what has He revealed to you?
I have learned that the Lord has a sense of humor. He will put you through things to prepare you and when you come out of your storm, you realize why you went through it in the first place. Then you look back at what you went
through, and you laugh because you see why He brought you through the way He did. He has revealed to me my purpose and that is preaching. He told me I won't be happy till I answer His call. Ever since I answered Him with “Yes”, I have been overwhelmed with Joy. Who are your favorite authors and books of the bible and why?
Paul is my favorite because of what he was before he became a follower of Christ. Paul is a prime example of how God can turn around anyone and use them so the Lord can have all the glory. I love all four of the Gospels because without the Gospels, how would we understand sin? The Gospels start the New Testament by revealing who Jesus is. What do you see as the greatest need of the Church today?
The greatest need for the church today is service. I feel like a lot of us are so caught up in “being served” we forget who we are “to serve”. Jesus came to serve and not to be served. I think the church of today needs to understand what serving really means. Jesus was a carpenter, so when we get high and mighty and feel like its all about us, that’s how our ministries get messed up; that’s how relationships get messed up. We have to remember who we are serving. It’s not about
titles, when we make it about that, we get away from His purpose.
Paul said to Timothy, “Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.” (1 Timothy 4:16) What does this scripture mean to you?
This means that as a minister, I must be careful with my demeanor and the quality of the text I may teach from. The Lord holds Preachers and Pastors accountable at the highest. Being a minister is nothing to play with. How will you stay grounded and humble?
I will stay humble by not buying into the “Entertainment of Preaching”. As a preacher there comes a certain amount of status; but I want to make sure God gets the glory through me. I don’t want Him not to get the glory because He has been too good to me for me not to stay humble. He gets the glory for everything I go through, the good and the bad. I refuse to lose myself by becoming arrogant or boastful. I know the gifts the Lord has given me; He can take it away in a heart beat so it is important for me to remain humble. All I want to do is to do well, and give my all to the Lord. As a closing comment from this interviewer, all I can say is: Amen.

SOFT DRINKS - HARD RISKS

Right up there with candies, cakes and pastries—Americans have a bond with consuming soft drinks. The numerous brand soft drink beverages have been able to get consumers obsessed with perceived favorite flavors, so much that some consumers ravenously drink multiple sodas every day.
The term soft drink is misleading as it contains harmful ingredients that are the source of hard risks to developing diseases. A main ingredient decidedly damaging is processed sugar and/or high fructose corn syrup, proven to be a danger to human health, where medical studies conclusively report how sodas are a base source of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other related severe diseases. In 1980, the average American more or less drank 30 gallons of soda per year. This is a large amount in itself; however by 2000 the average American drank 50 gallons of soda a year. During this same period of increase consumption the number of annual new diabetes cases for people aged 18 to 79 years diagnosed
with diabetes more than tripled.
A discernible correlation especially since that peak in 2000, lower consumption is back down to 1980 levels and the new cases of diabetes diagnosed are also down. The soft drink risks are reinforced with the connection in how soda sales are declining each year as well. There is a misconception that drinking soda quenches thirst, as processed sugar will mentally trick the brain into overeating, thereby searching for something to truly quench thirst. For heavy drinkers, the moment you stop drinking sugary soda the heart is spared from the increased risk of chronic heart disease. Sugary-filled beverage drinkers are 20% more likely to have a heart attack and higher blood pressure than non soda drinkers.
It does not matter if it is an artificially sweetened or added sugar; ingesting soft drinks can negatively affect the brain's thinking processes so bad that perpetual consumption will in due course lead to impaired learning, memory, and abnormal behavior. ing a lot of soda can leave your mouth as corroded as that of a methamphetamine drug abuser.
Soft drinks act as a diuretic, meaning that consumption of it builds the need to urinate urgently and frequently. Likewise, when you stop drinking sodas it serves to improve bone health and decreases the hard risk of developing osteoporosis.
Soft drinks are nothing more than liquid sugar that increases the risk of developing kidney disease and ultimately kidney failure and possibly decreased liver function. Liquid sugar consumption increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. For one year, take the step to stop consuming one soft drink a day that will achieve a reduction of over 200,000 calories, or about 60 pounds. On the evening of 13 November 2015, a series of planned terrorist attacks, consisting of mass shootings, suicide bombings, and hostage-taking occurred in Paris, the capital of France, and Saint-Denis.
Beginning at 9:20 CET, there were three suicide bombings outside the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, along with another suicide bombing and a series of mass shootings at four locations in Paris. The head terrorist killed 130 people, including 89 at the Bataclan theatre, where they took hostages before engaging in a three-hour stand-off with police. 368 people were injured but 80–99 were seriously injured. Seven of the terrorist also died, while authorities continued the search for any accomplices. The attacks were the deadliest on France since World War II, and the deadliest in the European Union since the Madrid train bombings in 2004. France had been bombing vari-

On the 15 of November, France launched its largest single airstrike of Operation Chammal by striking targets in Al-Raqqah, in retaliation for the attacks. On the 18 of November, the suspected lead operative of the attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, was killed in a police raid in Saint-Denis, along with at least two other people. A state of emergency was declared, the first since the 2005 riots, and temporary controls were placed on the country's borders.
People and organizations expressed solidarity, some through social media. Perhaps you’ve seen many of your friends cover their profile pictures with the French flag. Many American’s can relate with what French citizens are going through. Some also fear we are never far from a terrorist attack.
