Who We Are: The CARE Group, Inc. is the nonprofit merger organization of Moore Buddies Mentoring and Moore County Literacy. Combined, our mission is to equip, empower, and encourage individuals through education, mentoring, and enrichment opportunities. Our vision is to have a community in which families are thriving, and youth have promising futures.

Who We Serve: We serve at-risk youth and low-literacy adults in Moore County and surrounding areas free of charge. Our youth are referred to our programs through their schools and the juvenile justice system. We serve adult English Language Learners (ELLs), those seeking basic adult education, those seeking assistance with citizenship preparation, those wanting to improve their digital literacy, and those wishing to learn about how and why reading to children at a young age is essential.

What Sets Us Apart: We are the ONLY nonprofit in Moore County that offers ONE-ON-ONE Youth Mentoring and ONE-ON-ONE Adult Tutoring. This means that our students are matched with a caring and trained volunteer instead of a group, allowing trust and personal connections.

We are a referral program for the Juvenile Justice System and Moore County Schools for juveniles who are suspended, expelled, or currently in the court system.

We are the only certified Motheread/Fatheread® program in Moore County, hosting 10-week classes in our local churches, schools, and businesses.

A Message from Our Executive Director Dear friends of the CARE Group, The other day, I came across a video on happiness by Michael Norton, a professor at Harvard Business School. His group conducted experiments all over the world to test his hypothesis that people are happier when they spend money on others, rather than themselves. In their experiments, they gave money to one group to spend on themselves, and another group was told to spend on others, and in every instance, those who gave to others indicated that their happiness level increased, whereas those who spent on themselves did not experience happiness or have that increase. Even in countries where there was great need, people said their happiness went up only when they gave to others.

This got me to thinking and I did a little research and discovered that psychologists and scientists have studied this for years and have all come to the same conclusion. It makes us happy when we give to others. This is why the staff is so happy in their work-they love to serve others. They are filled with joy and passion to give to others.

And you, my friends, should be very happy people! You have so much to smile about. Like when kids in the mentoring program planted and tended a garden this year. They love fresh vegetables and fruits-something that is often rare in their households. They we able to pick cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, and radishes and make a salad. Another time they made salsa for their tacos! One mentee said she was taking the peppers home to stuff, bake, and then eat them. They were full of ideas and enthusiasm.

I know it will fill you with joy to learn that your contributions made it possible for two adults to become citizens of the US this year. This takes commitment and perseverance. Learning the English language and then studying questions about our government (that many of us could not answer) in hopes of passing that exam. It is a long, arduous journey that sometimes takes years to complete.

You will be happy to know that you are now going to be working to prevent adolescents from using opioids. A paid, professional mentor will work one-on-one with highly at-risk and vulnerable youth from ever using drugs. To prevent young people from ever going through something that could destroy their lives is certainly something to make us all happy!

Those adults who have worked to learn how to read, speak, and write in English, and take computer classes to up their skill levels can now support their families. And children in our Motheread program are prepared to start school now that their parents know how to help them. Their entire future has been completely rewritten for the better, and if that doesn’t make you happy, I don’t know what will!

I am happy for a donor who gave us a washer and dryer. So that our kids, who often do not attend school just because they do not have clean clothing, are now able to do their laundry at our center.

They can feel better about themselves because their clothes are clean. That should fill all our hearts with gratitude and joy. Such a simple thing that we take for granted every day is a really big deal to others.

So, thank you- each one of you. For your friendship, your support, both financially and through your words of encouragement. It brings joy to my life to do this work, to have the privilege of working to change people’s lives, and to do so along with such a great community of support. Our numbers continue to grow each year, and we continue to look for new ways to help those most vulnerable in our community to thrive. You make that happen. I hope you are happy about that. I know I am.

The CARE Group Programs Serving All Ages at All Stages

ONE-ON-ONE MENTORING & TUTORING Our mentoring coordinators connect a positive, caring adult to a student referred to us from schools and other agencies. Our mentors & tutors work with young people between the ages of 6 and 17, serving both in school and the community for at least one year for a minimum of 8 hours per month.

STRUCTURED DAY PROGRAM Our Structured Day Program is geared toward children at risk for truancy, academic failure, behavior problems, and dropping out of school. This includes children who are suspended, expelled, have a history of truancy, or are returning from a juvenile justice setting who are referred to us by schools or the courts. This program has a curriculum that includes schoolwork along with group sessions.

ONE-ON-ONE ADULT TUTORING ONE-ON-ONE ADULT TUTORING Our Adult Literacy programs teach basic life and literacy skills to adults who wish to learn English as a Second Language and Adult Basic Education, depending on the student's individual needs and goals. Students are matched with a trained volunteer tutor and meet once a week.

CITIZENSHIP PREPARATION Our Citizenship Program serves students wanting to gain the knowledge needed for the Naturalization Exam and Interview while working on their English reading and writing skills.

DIGITAL LITERACY CLASSES Our Digital Literacy Classes are open to adults over 18, including ELLs, who want to learn or sharpen their computer skills. From basic keyboard, email, and internet skills to spreadsheets and multimedia presentations, our classes have something for everyone.

MOTHEREAD/FATHEREAD® Our Motheread/Fatheread® program educates parents on the importance and vital impact of reading to their children every day before birth and throughout early childhood. Through this 10-week program, we help parents connect to children’s literature by using it as a framework to explore, discuss, and reflect on real-life, everyday experiences.

Blingo Bingo Fundraiser Break out your Bedazzler and join us for a fun evening of cheesy bling and bingo! We will be crowning a Queen and King of Bling, giving away prizes from local businesses, enjoying drinks and desserts, striking a pose at the Bling Booth, and having a great time raising money for the C.A.R.E. Group programs.

Adult Dodgeball Tournament All of you Average Joes and Purple Cobras come out and join us for a fun day of dodgeball and fundraising for the CARE Group programs!

Teams of 6 plus 1 substitute players face off in a double-elimination tournament Food trucks, drinks, raffles, and contests! Losers bracket buy-in for those out of the main bracket. Prizes for first-place teams in the main bracket and losers bracket, best team uniform, and highest fundraising team.

Summer Reading Stations Our annual Growing Moore Readers Summer Reading Stations will pass out free books, snacks, and STEM projects to help combat the summer reading slide! Great for children of all ages. Adopt a reading station and choose a hosting site by emailing nancy@mcliteracy.org.

Stuff the Bus Our 18th Annual Stuff the Bus event will take place outside of Staples in Aberdeen to help support our students as they return to school with much-needed school supplies. Grab some lunch from one of our supporting food trucks and snap a photo of you stuffing the bus!

6th Annual Gingerbread House Competition Compete against others in the categories of Kids, Adults, Family, and Business Teams for a trophy, prize, and bragging rights as you help raise money for our CARE Group programs!

Our summer reading stations were a hit again this year, with stations all around Moore County. Children of all ages came each day to get a free book, snack, and STEAM projects to keep them active and engaged in reading and learning over the Summer months! We served 2,143 children.

Stuffing the Bus with Our Community Our Moore County community businesses had a fantastic outreach to help us make our 17th annual Stuff the Bus event a success. Thanks to First Health Fitness Center, Pinehurst Resort and Country Club staff and members, D & I Council of Pinehurst Resort, Olmstead Village Dental, Staples, Dogslingers, and Ice Breakers Snoballs for helping us fill 95 bookbags and provide supplies to Sandhills Student Assistance, Moore County DSS, and Moore County Schools.

Blingo Bingo Our inaugural Blingo Bingo Fundraiser proved to be an amazing addition to our fundraising efforts with a huge turnout of local supporters decked out in all of their shiny “bling”. Congratulations to Bobbi Amato and Blake Altman, our 2023 Blingo Queen and King, and to all of our bingo and raffle winners!

Mentoring Music Classes Thanks to the Carolina Panthers, Casino Guitars, and Guitar Center we were able to purchase guitars, drum sets, and keyboards to begin our music program for our mentees. William Johnson has been an amazing support for our music program and teaches drums to our students weekly. Music therapy helps with processing, emotion regulation, and healing from trauma.

Investing in Prevention: Mentorship's Role in Combating the Opioid Crisis Many of you may have seen the articles in the Pilot regarding our county’s share of the state’s opioid settlement. Moore County is slated to receive over $750 million for opioid treatment and prevention over the next 18 years. The number of opioid users as well as deaths has climbed steadily for the past five years. In NC in 2018, there were a reported 2554 deaths from opioid use.

Jump to last year (2022), there were 4243 deaths from suspected overdose from Opioids. Right here, in Moore County, our number of opioid deaths almost tripled from 2005 to 2015. The opioid crisis is alive and well in our beautiful county and kills more than three times as many people as cocaine. To combat this growing problem, the state is issuing funds to our NC counties to fund programs and solutions toward preventing and treating those involved in this deadly drug.

Moore Buddies Mentoring, part of the CARE Group, was one of the first three agencies to be awarded funds from our county from the opioid settlement and is the only early prevention program being supported. Our strategy is simple but effective. Adolescents who come from homes where usage is a part of their family or neighborhoods and those who may be using other substances already will be referred to the program, and we will provide a one-on-one mentor who has shared life experiences with the youth. They have walked where these kids are and understand the trauma that is driving them toward their risky behavior. This intervention is one that the federal government has supported through funding for many years. The focus is not to dwell on drug treatment but to focus on the “why” behind the use, which is usually the ongoing trauma in the youth’s life. Having a mentor who understands the youth and what they are going through, who will walk alongside them to support and encourage the youth will help them to make more positive choices in life and have a better future- without substance use. We are so pleased to be able to offer this program to our highrisk, vulnerable youth and look forward to celebrating its success.

Community Engagement with Habitat for Humanity’s Women’s Build Empowering Women, Building Communities

Our commitment to community betterment led us to actively participate in the Habitat Women's Build this year. The Habitat for Humanity’s Women's Build is a unique initiative dedicated to empowering women in the construction industry while addressing the critical need for affordable housing. Their builds bring together volunteers from diverse backgrounds to contribute their time and skills in constructing homes for families in need.

A profound significance to our efforts unfolded as we realized that the house we were building turned out to be the future home of one of our new Motheread families! Our organization actively participates in initiatives that contribute to the broader well-being of the families we serve. The Habitat Women's Build is a testament to our multifaceted approach to community empowerment.

“I became a Moore Buddies mentor in 2019. My experience has been rewarding. I have a mentee I have been working with for three years and he is such a smart and fun young man. He is 14 now.

I also work with other mentees and have had some experiences that have given me the opportunity to get to know them. I have spent a lot of time with one young man who is 11 and I am very fond of him as well. I took him home from an event and when he got out of the car I said I Love You. He stopped and looked at me and said “I am confused, I thought only people who were dating, married couples, and family could love”. I explained to him that other people could love him as well. He just smiled and went into his apartment. I enjoy watching this young man work on his feeling of belonging and participating in the Moore Buddies Program.

I have been attending most events that offer a place for these young girls and boys to feel and create ideas about how they can feel cared about and explore their options. It is heartwarming to see how much they enjoy creating and are happy with the results of their own efforts.

All the kids I work with are very special and they range from a young age to high school age. Some call me their second mom. These youngsters are very special to me and I feel touched and rewarded to have them in my life as well. -Faye, Mentor Two of our 8th graders, Jerimiah & Nevaeh, graduated this year from the Community Learning Center at Pinkney.

This year our Moore Buddies Mentoring Program served 72 students through our oneon-one mentoring, tutoring, and group programs.

Pathways of Encouragement: A Mentor's Impact from Middle School to College and Beyond Maren & Najjya We are always excited when we get an update from past mentees. Najjya wanted to share with us her experience at Moore Buddies Mentoring and her mentor since middle school, Maren.

“My time with Moore Buddies Mentoring was impactful in every aspect of my life. I have had 3 mentors throughout my time with Moore Buddies, and my last mentor, Maren, has truly become a part of my family. Maren has supported me throughout every season of my life. Whether it was attending my high school and college graduations or anxiously letting 16-year-old me drive her car to get my driving hours, Maren was always present. Part of me will always credit Moore Buddies for some of my success because they provided me with the support I needed before I was even aware of it. I hope that for future generations of children, they are able to experience the love and generosity that I have with Moore Buddies.”

We are pleased to report that Najjya has graduated from NC State University with her Bachelor’s Degree and is now seeking her Master’s Degree in Social Work to give back to others.

Cultivating a Garden of Skills and Healthy Meals

This year, we had the help of a master gardener, Patricia Teague, and put in a garden behind our new unit. The kids helped put in the dirt, seed, and plant while maintaining it through the Spring and Summer. They loved going outside to water and pick the vegetables that we then used in the meals we cooked. For some people, gardening seems like work, but most of our children in the program have never had the opportunity to experience eating food they have grown themselves.

Structured Day Program “As the Structured Day Program Director, I found joy in knowing I could and would make a difference in our youth. In this program, I encountered over 100 students on probation and diversion contracts through the courts, as well as students suspended from school. We worked on bringing up grades, finishing school assignments, and embracing social skills and emotional wellness in our group mentoring settings. This program has many success stories and has Cynthia McLean helped so many students from getting behind in school while encouraging them Structured Day Program Director in their personal endeavors.”

As a group, we worked on personal vision boards and even had the pleasure of having a certified life coach and motivational guest speaker for our back-to-school event.

One of the students I worked with was in school at Pinckney. He had trouble staying in school and was not attending regularly. He dropped out several times and went back. After working with him on a school level and personal level, he made a promise to his mother and me that he would finish school and get his high school diploma. After struggling so hard with math, something he really needed in order to graduate, I, with other school resources, helped him complete his math requirement. In July of this year, he graduated from Pinckney Learning Center with his diploma.

I had another student at Pinckney who was a victim of gun violence, which caused him to be homebound and have to do school online. Through all his struggles, troubles, and sometimes lack of willpower, with the help and support from the structured day program, he still completed his classes and graduated with his high school diploma.

That means a lot to me.”- Fredrick, student, to Cynthia This year, our Structured Day Program served over 100 students, providing them with a space to serve their school suspensions and keep up with their school work, as well as group discussions centered around a trauma informed curriculum.

Motheread/Fatheread® Program

“One secondary highlight of teaching a Motheread class this year was the outreach a mother made to get some parenting help. Many discussions around the table at Motheread revolve around parenting, “We do what we know how to do until we learn a better way,” said Jennifer, a Motheread student. During one conversation, I mentioned that there is a parenting class in Moore County. The mother courageously reached out, sought help, and opened up at subsequent classes about what she’s learning to become a better mother.”

Family Literacy Program Coordinator “A thing this past year that has stuck with me and is impactful is that one of my students in Motheread had children and couldn't read stories to her kids. She felt embarrassed and she had no idea how to make reading interesting for her children. At the beginning of the classes of Motheread, she wouldn't participate and would only listen when we read. She began to feel more and more comfortable reading out loud and participating more. One day, she arrived very excited because she was able to read a story to her grandchild, she said that they had a lot of fun reading the book together. She didn't have Patty Lopez this experience with her children but now she can with her grandchildren.”

In one particular Motheread group, the participants wanted to start a separate book club and were given Michelle Obama’s book, The Light We Carry.

This year our Motheread® program had 54 parents participate with a total of 64 children.

Surveys reported that 96% of participants increased the frequency of which they read to their children.

Adult Literacy Program “One of the experiences this year that really galvanized my passion for our work in Adult and Family Literacy was attending the NC CCS Convocation for WIOA Title II providers. The attendees of the 2-day event included leaders from Career and College Readiness programs at the community colleges, and community-based literacy organizations from throughout the state of NC. The throughline of each session was that although we deal with the currency of data to improve our programs, our product is HOPE. Through our 1:1 Tutoring program and Family Literacy program, we give hope to individuals who, due to a multitude of barriers, would not otherwise be able to access evidence-informed literacy education that can help increase opportunities for workforce training, better employment, and/or postHeather Lussier Literacy Programs Director secondary education. I love that we are in the business of HOPE.” “One of the incentives we use for our students is a punch card for each quarter and every time a student attends a tutoring session they receive a "punch". At the end of the quarter each filled card is entered for a drawing. In this particular drawing the student won a gift card for one of the local supermarkets. When I gave the student the gift card he attempted to give it back to me, saying he wanted to thank me. Of course, I made him take it BUT I was so touched by the gesture. The point being, we are doing something for these students - caring and filling a need and validating our purpose.”

Just two weeks ago a former student, who hadn’t been able to attend sessions since Covid, came back into the center and asked if she could begin again. The positive impact our program has on the community is sustaining and long lasting.”

Empowering ESL Success: "John's" Journey to Career Advancement and Confidence “John”, an ESL student, has been with us at the Literacy Council since May 2021. His goals are to help his children with their school work, Improve his reading skills, Improve his oral/speaking skills, and Improve his writing skills. He has worked with two tutors and is conscientious about attending his tutor sessions. Progress for our ESL students is not always measured by a test but by how their life is affected positively or changed.

“John” has worked for a well-known company that makes parachute systems; his job is assembling parts. Although he has worked for this company for some time, he was looking for a job that pays more. So he took a second job at a chicken operations plant and worked the two positions to see how the new one would turn out (before resigning from the first one). After working for some time, he decided to take the new job (although he didn't like it, it paid more).

So….he went to his job to resign and give his notice.

The outcome: His boss told him he was a good employee and they didn’t want to lose him, so they did better than match the other employer’s wages and gave him a promotion as a manager.

“John” had to use his English speaking skills to talk to the head boss, take phone calls, and speak to other employees he manages. He has gained

confidence and improved his English speaking skills to the level of life-changing experiences.

In addition, his wife, who had attended the Literacy Council for a short period, returned to receive services, and he has referred his cousin, who also attends the Literacy Council. **Names have been changed in this story to protect our student’s identity.

“I am here because I want more confidence to talk with others, and now I am more confident because I went for an interview and got the work.”- Rayza, ESL student Joyce Smith, ESL Tutor Since 2022 “I retired last year from a career in Healthcare and knew that I wanted to volunteer to help people learn how to read. I had helped in the schools when my children were growing up and enjoyed it so much that I was anxious to get back to it.

I quickly learned about the Moore County Literacy Council and called to find out more about it.

I began my orientation and when I completed it I was "matched" with a young woman from Puerto Rico. I learned that she had arrived in the States approximately 6 months beforehand not knowing any English and so our classes began!

I'm not sure which one of us was more determined! She would explain in her broken English how badly she wanted to learn English which motivated me to do whatever was necessary to help her achieve that goal. I would pour over the workbooks that were provided and then would print crossword puzzles and make my own worksheets trying to make it fun but instructive. I should say at this point that I do not speak Puerto Rican so it was all up to her to make herself understood - and she did.

As the weeks have passed our conversations have grown longer and more personal. I have made a very dear friend.

Over the summer her 6-year-old daughter joined us and she and her mom would read to each other during the class.

Both of their reading skills improved along the way.

She surprised me when after a few short months together she went for a job interview and got the job! She explained to the manager that her "English was not very good" but the manager was willing to work with her. There were many days that she was afraid to go to work. She knew customers might ask questions that she would not understand or know how to answer in English but she pushed through.

She has recently been promoted to a supervisory position - I could not be prouder!

This year we provided tutoring to 75 low literacy adults in our ESL and ABE programs.

Digital Literacy Graduates

Citizenship Goals Achieved

This year, we began our New Digital Literacy classes that are created for beginners to advanced digital learners. Our basic skills students learned basic operations, keyboarding, email, and internet skills. We held our first graduation certificate ceremony for our eight students and their families to acknowledge their hard work and success.

This year we had two of our hardworking students, Alene and Johanna. Alene is from Nassau, Bahamas and Johanna is from Costa Rica. Both ladies put in the time with their tutor, Kathy, and have fulfilled their dreams of becoming US Citizens and participating in the upcoming election.

“This year has been a wonderful year! We have increased the number of folks that we serve in our programs. We have seen our kids do better in school and achieve some personal goals. We have made new friends and felt the support of our community. Driving through Mcdonald's to get my diet coke and seeing one of our precious kids grinning from the window when he recognizes me, or seeing several of our kids who persevered through difficult circumstances graduate from high school was a huge blessing. Attending the “graduation” for our first digital literacy class was such a fun event. Friends and families came with flowers, took photos, and brought delicious food to make the celebration complete. We continue to find joy in the work we do and the people we serve and look forward to making many more memories as we go!”

"I moved to Moore County from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania about 2 years ago. I left a Paraprofessional position in an Accounting firm where I worked for over 30 years. I enjoyed my work, but it was the norm to work independently with little to no interactions with my coworkers. What an enjoyable blessing to be hired as the Financial Officer for The CARE Group, Inc. I've learned so much about all the programs that serve the community. I've witnessed the positive interactions and relationships of the staff who work with children, teens, and adults.
