A night of music, dance and fun

ALYSSA TILLMAN

The acapella groups on campus had a big night at GLOW in the Darcapella. It was a night full of dancing, singing, beatboxing and fun with family, friends and faculty all turning out to support these amazing groups. The show kicked off at 7 p.m. with Hypnotic Control dancing to Kanye West’s “All Of The Lights,” The Blackeyed Peas’ “Imma Be” and Rihanna’s “Only Girl In The World.” The au-

dience was hyped up and ready for the fun night ahead of them after this group’s energetic performance.

Ty Potock and Marshall Mattison from Extreme Measures were the MCs of the night. The first group they introduced were the Newport Pearls, who had a fun introduction video based on the classic 90s sitcom “Friends.” The first song of the night was Sabrina Carpenter’s “Feather,” sung by Emma Riddle. They transitioned into Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” sung

by Andrea Farag and Taylor Davis. The audience clapped along to the beat of the country hit, then the Pearls finished with Avery Mangles and Laney Fick singing “Northern Attitude” by Noah Kahan ft. Hozier.

After the MCs came out and did a Steve Harvey bit for the audience, Take Note was introduced next. The group paid homage to funny news broadcast fails in their introduction video, which had the whole audience laughing.

On Friday, the Captains ended their season with a 70-31 victory on senior night against in-conference opponents TCNJ (College of New Jersey). The game was played under the lights of TowneBank Stadium in front of 2,708 fans who witnessed a record-setting performance from the Captains offense.

Throughout the game, the Captains scored a total of 10 touchdowns, with the scoring being evenly split between both halves of the game. Eight of the ten touchdowns scored came from the Captains lethal backfield duo of junior Gunner White and sophomore Jordin Lennon, who each scored four touchdowns respectively.

Weather Update:

The end of hurricane season

CLAIRE.HALL.22@CNU.EDU

As the hurricane season comes to an end, the 18th storm to be named was Tropical Storm Sara, which was forming in the Caribbean for the past week. Meteorologists have been shocked regarding how late the storm formed in the hurricane season, as the season ends on Nov. 30th. However, despite the United States experiencing colder temperatures, the Gulf of Mexico has temperatures ranging from 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The warming water has allowed the opportunity for the tropical wave to form, which can be a prime contributor to creating tropical storms and hurricanes.

According to USA Today, due to an intense wind shear generated by the ocean, the storm was unlikely to move further northwestward and it fizzled out in the Caribbean.

After Hurricane Rafael made landfall in Western Cuba last week as a Category 3 hurricane, meteorologists claimed that the November Hurricane forecasts showed the possibility of more hurricanes and storms (i.e Tropical Storm Sara). Meteorologist Phil Klotzbach told USA Today that “while it’s getting late in the season, things look ‘conductive for another storm or two.’”

Not only is it very late into the season, but there was an average of 17 named storms forming, which is above the normal average of 14. According to USA Today, of those 17, 11 were hurricanes, including the two catastrophic hurricanes, Milton and Helene.

The global climate pattern, the phenomena of Madden-Julian-Oscillation (MJO) is increasing favors in storm formation. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, MJO is an eastward moving disturbance of clouds, rainfall, winds and pressures that cross the tropics and returns to its initial starting point in 30 to 60 days. This is one explanation as to why we’ve had such a busy and long hurricane season, as MJO ultimately influences weather patterns perfect for hurricane formation.

12 Salisbury students arrested for hate crimes against another student

Student lured to an off-campus apartment complex where he was assaulted by several Salisbury University students

NBC News reported that on Oct. 15, a violent and physical assault occurred in an apartment complex off-campus of Salisbury University. Police were initially contacted on Oct. 31, 16 days after the assault occurred. When police arrived, witnesses showed them videos of the assault occurring that “allegedly showed ‘an adult male victim being assaulted by several college-aged men,’” police said in a news release on Nov. 7.

Police had met with the victim later on and had been informed that the group of men had used a fake instagram account to lure the victim to the apartment complex. Police reported that when the victim had entered the residence in question, several college-aged men allegedly surrounded the victim and forced him to sit in a chair isolated in the middle of the room. The victim then describes being ‘kicked, punched and spit on while the men called the victim derogatory names.’ The victim also reported several attempts to leave the residence, but was unsuccessful, as the men shoved him to the ground. After several minutes of this assault, the men left the victim in need of medical attention, with several bruises and a broken rib. It was later concluded that the victim was targeted due to his sexual orientation.

As of Nov.16, the police have arrested 12 Salisbury students, several of which are brothers of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. As a result of their arrests for hate crimes, they were all later suspended from the university. They were

charged with first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, false imprisonment and hate crime offenses, all of which are the “harshest penalty the University is able to implement at this stage of the process.”

More updates are expected to come later on.

MICHALAH.BECK.22@CNU.EDU

On Nov. 13, President-elect Trump met with President Biden in the Oval Office to discuss the transition of power. Reuters reported that Trump’s team has not signed transition agreements, causing a stall between the two administrations.

“They discussed important national security and domestic policy issues facing the nation and the world…It was indeed very cordial, very gracious, and substantive,” said White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre.

The President and President-elect discussed

matters relating to the Russia-Ukraine War and conflict in the Middle East. President-elect Trump commented on his inquiry about the President’s view on the conflicts. The Washington Post quoted Trump saying “and he gave them to me, he was very gracious.”

During the two-hour conversation, President Biden stated, “looking forward to having a, like we said, smooth transition - do everything we can to make sure you’re accommodated, what you need…Welcome, welcome back.”

Notre Dame Cathedral set to reopen in December

ABC News reports the Notre Dame Cathedral is set to reopen Dec. 7 after a portion of the building was damaged from a fire in 2019. The Notre Dame Cathedral, located in Paris, France, has been a site of religious and historical moments for over 860 years. Leading up to the reopening, French President Emmanuel Macron is set to complete a walkthrough of the newly restored cathedral on Nov. 29.

More than 2,000 people from all over the world helped with restoring the cathedral. Officials of the Elysée Palace, Macron’s residence, noted “the artisans will receive a diploma for their efforts, and some names have been proposed by the Ministry of Culture for the next promotions of France’s highest distinctions, the Legion of Honor and the Order of Merit.”

Russia-Ukraine War hits 1,000 days of conflict

DORRIAN

BREANNA.DORRIAN.23@CNU.EDU

As of Nov. 19, the Russia-Ukraine War hit its mark of being in conflict for 1,000 days. AP News created a ‘24 hours in Ukraine’ map as the nation hit that ‘milestone of violence.’ The map demonstrates Russian ballistic missile strikes including a strike at 1:45AM in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine to a strike in Kherson, Ukraine at 11:45PM with several in between.

CNN reported on Nov. 19, that Ukraine fired U.S.-made long range ballistic Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles into Russia. On the previous Sunday, Nov. 17, the U.S. gave Ukraine permission to fire long range ballistics, which is being called a major shifting point in the war’s projection. Several world leaders are reportedly discussing the decision and how it is to likely impact the war.

CNN reported that the “decision was viewed by many Western leaders as a way to position Ukraine for success ahead of a change in American leadership, with incoming President-elect Donald Trump skeptical of continued US assistance.”

This made them the 3rd and 4th rushing leaders in the NJAC (New Jersey Athletic Conference). The Captains offense controlled the evening on the ground as they totaled 458 rushing yards, the second-highest in school history behind the program’s 509 yards against Averett on Oct. 10, 2009. While the Captains offense received lots of recognition for their play, the Captains defense also had standout performers. The National Basketball Association (NBA) has a missing star problem on their hands.

Although the season only began one month ago, there have already been several star players sitting out due to injury or other unknown reasons. One prime example of this is the Philadelphia 76ers, who have yet to play a game with all three stars active. At the start of the year, forward Paul George was sidelined with a bone bruise in his left knee and center Joel Embiid was out with what was known as a sore left knee. Once both players were close to or able to make their returns, guard Tyrese Maxey suffered a hamstring injury and will be out for the foreseeable future.

Other teams may not have seen as many key players miss time but have

a total of three passes, making him second in interceptions among all players in the NJAC. Freshman defensive back Eddie Henderson also recorded one as he returned an interception for a touchdown early in the second quarter. Sophomore Noah Martin made his presence felt within the unit as he recorded one interception and 14 tackles, moving to fifth in tackles in the NJAC.

After a touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Connor Barry that found freshman tight

end Noah Smith, the Captains had a 21-3 lead over TCNJ. An interception returned for a touchdown by Henderson followed

by a rushing touchdown from Lennon gave the Captains a 35-3 halftime lead. After the Captains scored another touchdown in

the third quarter, the game was out of reach as the Captains ended the night with a 70-31 win. Their victory celebration was made even sweeter when graduate offensive lineman Tyler Palmer proposed to his girlfriend on the field after the big win. This win ended the Captains season on a positive note as they recorded five straight wins, posting an overall record of 7-3 and 5-1 in conference play which placed them second in the NJAC.

“With the adoption of a 65-game minimum to be eligible for awards, one would think this would have fixed the star problem the league initially had as they could no longer sit out games during the regular season. suffered a hip fracture during a game against the Golden State Warriors on November 10 and is expected to miss the next two months. Other injuries that face long timelines include

Denver Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon and New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson. Both are expected to miss roughly a month but it could be more depending on

their recovery. With the adoption of a 65-game minimum to be eligible for awards, one would think this would have fixed the star problem the league initially had as they could no longer sit out games during the regular season. However, this rule has created a new problem entirely as the bodies of players are not holding up. This is leading to a greater concern around the league about if there is too much pressure being placed on star players to play when they are not at full strength. While the intentions of the NBA meant well, it is becoming evident that their methods may have been too harsh. Finding a way to incentivize players to play during the regular season will only lead to a worse product later in the year. Although the league has tried their best to address the missing star problem, they are just as far away from solving it as they were before.

NHL begins discussing new CBA

Fair medical treatment at the forefront

Over the last couple weeks, the National Hockey League (NHL) and the NHLPA (National Hockey League Players Association) have been meeting to discuss a new CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement). This is done quite often, as CBAs usually do not stay active for a long time with the current CBA expiring in September of 2026.

While several important topics have been discussed, one of the main ones that has been discussed is on biomedical treatment. The NHLPA has cited a dispute that occurred in 2021 between the Buffalo Sabres, and their former star, Jack Eichel, in which the team refused to exchange medical information on Eichel with teams that were interested in acquiring him.

In article 34.4 of the current CBA, it

is stated that, “...the team physician shall determine the diagnosis and/or course of treatment (including the timing thereof) after consulting with the Second Medical Opinion Physician and the Third Physician Expert, if any, and giving due consideration to his/her/their recommendation(s).”

This issue with the team’s medical officials making the final call on players’ statuses has been an issue in other sports as well. Most recently, the Miami Dolphins with star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. This is done to ensure that players have more say over their medical history, which can help further

their lucrative careers in the National Hockey League.

A similar issue that has been brought to the table relates to how medical information is finalized. The NHL’s approach to this is the same as both the NBA and MLS CBAs. With the current CBA discussions, the NHL hopes to achieve what the NFL and MLB do: allow for players to decide their treatment plan. These discussions are important to the growth of the NHL as its average contract value is only $3.2 million, a stark difference from the MLB’s $4.2 million and the NBA’s staggering $11.9 million. The negotiations will hopefully give players more say in their treatment, which will allow for them to recover sooner and create exciting play that will bring in more revenue to compete with the other major professional sports leagues.

Soloist Kaitlyn Shackleton kicked off their performance with Renee Rapp’s “Willow.” Next was “Good Luck, Babe,” sung by Sarah Gingerich, who impressed the audience with her Chappell Roan like vocals. Take Note closed with Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga’s “Die With A Smile,” sung by Julia Sapack and Abiy Hailu.

After a brief intermission and the raffle prize winners being announced, The MCs introduced beatboxers Esse Black and Tri Tran, who came out and did some impressive beatboxing for the

funny introduction video based on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, where they were looking for their missing group member. They kicked off their set with the Neon Trees’ “Animal,” sung by Esse Black. They transitioned into “Don’t Get Me Wrong” by Lewis Capaldi, sung by Kayla Hebb. The audience went wild for Tori Templeton singing their last song, “Still Feel” by Half. Alive. The MC’s came back out and told some jokes about acapella singers, including a joke about altos not being able to change a lightbulb because “they can’t reach that high.” They introduced University Sounds next, who’s introduction

video based on “The Lorax” was a crowd pleaser. They started with Blu Cantrell’s “Hit Em’ Up Style,” sung by Kaitlyn Quillian. Stella Klosek sang Labyrinth’s “Jealous” next, then they closed out with Nicky Flaut and Paige Kelly singing “Telephone” by Lady Gaga and Beyonce.

The final group of the night was Extreme Measures, who had a funny bank robbery themed introduction video. They started with Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black,” sung by Caroline Slatner. Their next song was Julia Michaels “What a Time” sung by Campbell Mitchell and Ty Potock.

They finished strong with a 2010s medley with several hits, including Jason Derulo’s “Whatcha Say,” One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” and Demi Lovato’s “Heart Attack.”

The show closed with all the groups coming out for their final bow and the audience stood up and applauded everyone’s hard work.

A Cosa Nuestra album review

Rauw Alejandro honors his heritage in new album

JANELLE PINEDA

JANELLE.PINEDA.22@CNU.EDU

Rauw Alejandro’s latest album, “Cosa Nuestra,” represents a transformative milestone in his career. Released on Nov. 15, 2024, the concept of this album reflects on his evolution as an artist while also honoring his Puerto Rican heritage, particularly the migration narratives of New York’s 1960s Latin community. Leading up to its release, Alejandro teased the album extensively on his social media platform, calling it his “most elaborate artistic project to date.” He described how the well known salsa album, “Cosa Nuestra,” by Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe inspired him to connect with his roots while mixing in modern reggaeton and pop elements.

Alejandro incorporated retrothemed visuals of mid-20th-century New York, perfectly complementing the album’s narrative focus. To build anticipation, Alejandro dropped the single “Déjame Entrar” and hinted at collaborations with notable artists like Bad Bunny and Pharrell Williams. He later excited his fans with behind the scene glimpses from his recording sessions along with interviews where

Alejandro is currently on tour and during his live performances, he hinted at a 2025 world tour featuring tracts from “Cosa Nuestra.” I believe that the album stands out most with tracks like ‘Qué Pasaría’, a collaboration with Bad Bunny that combines emotional storytelling lyrics with catchy reggaeton rhythms highlights the meaning of his project.

Another song that stood out to me was “Pasaporte”. This song highlights Alejandro’s range as an artist, adding electronic and tropical rhythms into a powerful track that dives into themes of migration and identity. However, not all tracks reach the same heights as these hit songs. I believe that the track, “Touching the Sky” lacks in the emotional resonance of the album’s stronger pieces. Although its bold use of experimental sounds and lyrics, it has been criticized as lacking in emotional resonance compared to the album’s stronger pieces.

Ultimately, “Cosa Nuestra” underlines Alejandro’s status as an artist and how he is not afraid to

push boundaries and try new styles. By mixing personal storytelling with innovative soundscapes, he is not only honoring his roots but he is also redefining what reggaeton can achieve in the modern global stage. Although not every track hit the mark, this album stands out and fans as well as newcomers will find much to appreciate with this bold personal project.

The Marching Captains celebrate senior night

Cinematic chic

Fashion trends from films that we still wear today

ALYSSA.TILLMAN.22@CNU.EDU

The Marching Captains seniors performed at their last game on Friday. A night full of high energy game play and music served as the perfect send off for the graduating class. With over 20 graduating seniors, the Marching Captains had a lot to celebrate at their final home game of the season.

Family and friends gathered around the Atrium to watch the band’s pre performance, which took place after the seniors were given their honorary blue plumes. Director Mark Johnson gave some thoughtful words of encouragement to the graduating class, telling them “We will exist in the years to come because of what you’ve done here. The blue plume is a symbol of all that hard work.”

The music echoed through the Atrium and created a unique sound different to what you’d hear on the football field. Family and friends had a great time watching the band’s pregame routine, including a funny “ritual” where members lift senior Alysia Alexander into the air. After their Atrium performance, the band marched across campus to the tailgate, where they performed several arrangements including Demi Lovato’s “Confident.”

The energy was high at halftime with the Captains leading 35-3. The seniors were recognized during halftime before their performance, with each senior’s major and instrument being named as the stands cheered and applauded them. They performed Demi Lovato’s “Confident,”

Macklemore’s “Downtown” and David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance.”

The graduating class’ last football game

This wasn’t the senior’s last time performing. The Marching Captains have their trip to London next year to look forward to, where they are performing at the London New Year’s Parade.

The Captains continued to lead throughout the third and fourth quarters, with the help of the Marching Captains keeping everyone hyped up. Songs they played throughout the game included “Lip Gloss” by Lil Mama and “HOT TO GO” by Chappell Roan.

“We will exist in the years to come because of what you’ve done here.”

After a well deserved celebration of the football team’s win, the team ran over to the bleachers where the Marching Captains were playing. The two groups stood across from each other, linking arms and singing the CNU Alma Mater.

The work that goes into just one game day is impressive to witness. From walking to just about every location on campus with big instruments to going back and forth between the stands and the field to support the football team, The Marching Captains hard work should not go unnoticed.

CLAIRE HALL CLAIRE.HALL.22@CNU.EDU

The fashion industry is constantly changing as many things are going in and out of style. Many people take to social media or magazines to find the latest fashion trends to follow up on. However, what if I told you that there are some trends from movies and shows that are still worn today?

Matching Plaid Sets - “Clueless” (1995)

Cher knew what she was doing when she was sporting her iconic yellow plaid matching set, taking the fashion industry by storm. This outfit still remains an important part of the film, as many people value Cher for her savvy style. Since the film came out in 1995, many people have been incorporating plaid in their everyday outfits. Plaid blazers have recently been in style, and can be sported with a cute skirt to match.

Mini Skirt and Kitten Heels“Mean Girls” (2004)

The 2000’s were a big year when it came to fashion and no one did it better than the iconic characters from “Mean Girls.” Their mini skirt and kitten heels were a staple in the film, as it represented their diva-like personalities. My favorite outfit from the film was when Cady wore a light blue zip up with a pink shirt underneath and a short skirt to match. She also wore matching kitten heels which tied the outfit perfectly together. I feel that many individuals to this day are still sporting this look, as fashion trends from the 2000’s are making a comeback.

Tweed Blazers and Knee High Boots - “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006)

Anne Hathaway absolutely slayed this look in “The Devil Wears Prada.” She sported a black tweed jacket with a mini skirt and knee high boots. This outfit combination was absolutely perfect as the pieces complimented each other nicely. Not only was this outfit purely iconic, but really gave knee high boots a comeback again in 2023. Now, many people are sporting these to complete their effortless fall look. I even bought myself a pair of dark brown boots because of how awesome they look paired with any fall outfit.

Baby Doll Dresses -”13 Going on 30” (2004)

Everyone remembers Jennifer Garner’s movie “13 Going on 30” and how babydoll dresses were incorporated in every single scene of the film. Let’s just say that she slayed this look, as each dress was so cute and simple. Who could even forget her bright blue babydoll dress with a red, green and purple stripe on it. So iconic. I especially love how babydoll dresses have never gone out of style, as many people love dressing up with them. They are the perfect staple to add to any closet as you can wear them casually, formally or add your own twist to them.

Skirts with Sweaters -”Gilmore Girls (2000)

Rory Gilmore has become a fashion icon for the fall season, sporting a sweater with a skirt on numerous occasions in the series. This is where fashion meets comfy as “Gilmore Girls” is primarily set during the fall season. This fashion trend is still holding true today as many individuals are sporting their favorite sweater with a skirt and tights. As someone who enjoys dressing up for the fall, I loved seeing the outfits that Rory came up with throughout the film.

Retro’s Burger and Fries:

Editor reviews local restaurant

CLAIRE HALL

CLAIRE.HALL22@CNU.EDU

When visiting the historic triangle of Virginia, one of my favorite places that I’ve been to was Retro’s, located in Colonial Williamsburg. Retro’s is a burger joint that is styled around the 1950s, hence its name. I loved how they incorporated this style into little things such as the paper they used to wrap the food in or the chalkboard that they used as the menu. When I first walked into the burger joint, I loved how cozy and comfortable the place felt. The 1950s theme was on point throughout the entire restaurant. When ordering my food, I got to order it off of a chalkboard which I thought was very unique. They have a variety of meals, sides and drinks that you could get. A few of their very popular items include fresh cut french fries, custard, burgers, hot dogs, and grilled sandwiches. They have such a large variety that can cater towards everyone’s needs whether you need a quick lunch or a casual dinner. After a long debate, I decided to try the chicken sandwich with their homemade limeade. After I ordered, I got my ticket for them to call when my food was ready.

I decided to sit on some swivel chairs that were by the front window of the restaurant. I really enjoyed sitting here, as I got to see so many different people walk by. They had so many different seating options as you were able to sit outside of the restaurant or inside

Order of Omega:

CNU’s chapter welcomes new members

On Nov. 12, 2024 the Christopher Newport University lota lota chapter of Order of Omega, a national organization that recognizes members of Greek fraternities and sororities at its highest level, inducted its newest members. The chapter stands for the professional, academic, and leadership development of all Greek members. Members initiated are reported to be selected from the top 5% of their institutions.

Members of Greek life of a sophomore standing or higher are encouraged to strive for placement in the Order of Omega as it is referred to as the “highest honor” a member of Greek life can receive.

people and allow her to step out of her shell.

“It’s a really big world, and don’t let what people say on the outside deceive you,” she said. “It can change your life for the better.”

Fraternity brothers, seniors Noah Shubert and Kainoa Samuelson and junior Ethan Bower of Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp) also accredited their involvement in Greek life to growth in both their personal and professional careers. Samuelson expressed that for him Greek life allowed him to find a sense of belonging and community. He expressed he does not have brothers himself, but has found some through SigEp.

depending on your preference. When I got my food, I immediately tried the limeade because I was very thirsty. I’m not sure what they put into the limeade, but it was so good. It had this refreshing taste to it that made me want to purchase another one. I think they used some sparkling water with lime flavoring and then threw a lime in it. Overall, it was so good and I honestly want to know how they made it. I then tried my chicken sandwich and thought that it was pretty good. The chicken was very crispy and sat underneath some lettuce, tomato, and pickles. I really enjoyed all of these flavors together, but overall, it tasted like a plain chicken sandwich to me, nothing really special.

For the chicken sandwich and the limeade, I spent around 13 dollars. If I wanted to add a side, such as onion rings, it would have cost extra. Overall, I think that this is a bit on the pricier side for what I got, but isn’t bad to spend if you are only visiting Williamsburg a couple times out of the year. All in all, I would rate this place an 8/10, only because I think that the food should be a tad bit cheaper. However, I love the 1950s theme of the place and think that this is the perfect and quaint little place to visit to enjoy a blast from the past.

At CNU the Order of Omega organization is run predominantly by president junior Erin Burrier and seniors vice president of recruitment Jaime Steigerwald and vice president of administration Kaley Vincent.

The excitement amongst the new initiates before their induction was palpable. All expressed enthusiasm to join the Order of Omega in representation of their own sororities and fraternities.

New member senior Audrey Riley and ritual chair for the sorority Zeta Tau Alpha has held numerous leadership roles in her organization. She was originally encouraged to join Greek life by her mother, who was also in a sorority in college. Riley also accredits her involvement in Greek life for opening various doors of opportunity to meet new

“I wanted to find a group of people that are very like minded, that we all have the same exact values and embodiments that we want to have later in life,” Samuelson said. “I definitely found that within my organization, and that’s what drove me to rush just by finding that collective group of people that I associate with very closely, and that’s why I’m part of my organization now.”

The SigEp brothers also expressed similar sentiments to Riley regarding opportunities they’ve had through Greek involvement. Similar to Riley, each brother would encourage any and all CNU students to give Greek life a chance.

“Just go for it. You’re here to try things new,” Bower said. “And Greek life is a great way to kind of open new doors for you.”

Christmas essentials to get into the spirit

Christmas essentials don’t stop at just a tree or tinsel decor, they’re also what can make the holiday season feel more fun! Here are some Christmas essentials:

Eggnog & Hot Cocoa

Curling up on the couch with a cold cup of eggnog or a warm cup of hot chocolate with a good Christmas movie is one of the best ways to get into the holiday season.

Candles

During the holiday season, nothing can separate me from the TJMaxx candle aisle. My go-to candle scents during the holiday season are vanilla, pine and basically any candle that has a depiction of the holiday season (clever marketing).

Cookies

One of my fondest memories growing up was baking holiday cookies with my grandmother, so it’s certainly something I recommend for everyone during the holiday season. Some of the best cookies to make during the holiday

season are snickerdoodle cookies and sugar cookies!

Christmas Movies

As soon as the holiday season hits, I turn on my favorite Christmas movies such “Elf”, “The Polar Express” and “The Grinch” with a cup of hot chocolate.

Soft pajamas and fuzzy socks

With the stress of the holiday season, it’s important to relax and unwind. Putting on your coziest soft pajamas and favorite fuzzy socks can help with relaxation.

Christmas music

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” is ready to be played on repeat throughout car radios and stores.Christmas music has already played plenty of times throughout my apartment and I highly recommend you play Christmas music this early, too.

These are just a few ways to get into the holiday spirit with some Christmas essentials. Some of these ideas are great to do with a friend or in a group, but they’re also great to do by yourself! It is also completely valid to put your Christmas tree up before Thanksgiving and do not let anyone tell you otherwise!

How can I form more friendships with people on campus?

The Fall 2024 semester is coming to an end as final exams are right around the corner. Soon enough, we will be leaving for winter break to celebrate the holidays with our families. Even though we will no longer be on campus for a couple weeks, it is never too late to put yourself out there and make new friends. Below, I’ve listed some tips on how to make connections and lasting friendships with those around you.

Join organizations and clubs on campus

A lot of the friendships that I have today came from the organizations that I had joined as a freshman. Sometimes, people are adamant on joining organizations due to a fear of not being accepted, however, that is never the case. Organizations are meant to bring people on campus together who share similar interests. They make forming friendships easier because of the interests you would have in common with everyone else in the organization. Having a common interest is something that is very important when trying to make friends because it gives you both a conversation starter and a special bond with that individual.

Find friends in classes

Friends can pop-up in the places where you least expect them to. For example, in your classes. I have met so many different people from my classes that I didn’t think I would be friends with. However, you will soon come to find out that you actually grow up with these people when you move up further in your education. This is because when you declare your major your sophomore year, you are placed in classes that align with your major. You will start to see the same people in your classes because they declared the same major as you, and soon enough, you will form close friendships with them. Not to

mention, since you both have the same major, you have a common interest to talk about, which is great for forming friendships. You can also form friendships in other classes, such as the Area of Inquiry classes that have nothing to do with your major, but are required to graduate. However, when you do form these friendships with individuals in your classes, make sure to find time to hang out with them outside of the classroom setting, so you can get to know them more on a personal level.

Plan ahead to hang out

With the increased workload that we have a couple weeks before finals, it can be difficult to plan anything social in your calendar. However, it is good to hang out with friends, as this helps with stress and increases your mood. Since everyone’s calendar is so booked, the best thing to do is to plan a time to hang out and stick to it. Sometimes last minute plans can be difficult to do, just because of the ever changing schedule that we as college students have. Make sure to sit down and talk to your friend about when and where you want to hang out, so that there is full communication about the plans that you are creating.

I hope these tips are helpful with being able to form more friendships on campus. Remember to radiate confidence and be yourself!

Beyond the Spotlight: Artists that are underrated in today’s music industry

Record player, from Unsplash

Sometimes you just want to shuffle your playlist and re-listen to some songs from the good old days. When I shuffle my playlist, I am greeted with songs that I haven’t listened to since COVID. I will say that some artists during this time had absolutely bangers, but they later died out due to a lack of publishing new music. I feel that there are some artists that deserve more recognition, simply because their music is what gets me out of bed in the morning. Here are some artists that I believe are VERY underrated:

Marshmello

Is it just me or was Marshmello the epitome of our childhood? I remember listening to his first song, “Wavez” that came out in 2015 on Soundcloud. Maybe I was just an energetic child, but I loved the electronic dance music genre; even now being in college. I just feel like his music can make anyone get up and dance because of the infectious vocal hooks and melodic synths, which Marshmello is known for. In 2018, he released “Happier,” collabing with Bastille, which hit

number two on the charts. Not only is his music good, but he has this positive aura to him. While Marshmello’s identity was leaked by Forbes in 2017, confirmed to be Chris Comstock, he has never taken off his headpiece or confirmed his identity. He mentioned previously that he didn’t want fame, but wanted to create positive music for people to connect with. As of right now, I haven’t been listening to any of his newly released songs from 2024, but am excited to listen to them when I get the chance.

David Guetta

I feel like David Guetta is always releasing some amazing, groovy and upbeat songs. I’ve been listening to him since middle school, as he was a popular artist in Germany when I would visit my grandparents over the summer. He’s released a number of popular songs including, “Baby Don’t Hurt Me,” “Titanium,” “I’m Good (Blue)” and “Where Them Girls At.” He is easily one of my favorite artists and I get so excited when he pops up on my shuffled playlist now and then because I can’t be in a bad mood when listening to his music. I’m very surprised that many people don’t listen to his music or have never even heard of him before as the music he creates sets the stage for any party or social interaction. As some-

one who is constantly coming out with amazing music, David Guetta should be more talked about.

Coldplay

Coldplay will forever be remembered as the band I listen to when I’m feeling all the emotions. My playlist is full of Coldplay songs that I could never get sick of, including, “Clocks,” “Paradise,” “Hymn for the Weekend,” “Yellow” and “Viva La Vida.” I could honestly name a lot more songs. However, despite all this amazing music, I hardly hear people talking about them. Are they even still relevant in today’s music industry? I know they are still creating amazing music, as I have been listening to “WE PRAY” which is a part of their Moon Music album that was released recently on Oct. 4, 2024. I don’t know about anyone else, but Coldplay has been growing on me and has become my number one listened to band on Apple Music. They NEED to be talked about more in the music industry because they are unstoppable when it comes to creating amazing music. Of course, I could go on and on about all the artists that I feel are underrated, but these are my main three that I feel just need to have more recognition and fame. When you get the chance to, I highly recommend listening to their music because it will give you the power to get up and conquer the day.

One of the worst parts about CNU

CNU’s great at a lot of things, parking is not one of them

Christopher Newport University has tons of amazing, wonderful qualities, such as its beautiful landscape, the kind faculty and its incredible programs. All make CNU an ideal choice for many young prospective students. However, nothing is perfect, clearly. For CNU, its fatal flaw is parking.

Starting Thursday, Nov. 14 at 10PM and not ending until 8PM Friday, Nov. 15, there was an unfortunately timed football game that caused lot closures in Lots I1 and I2 (Sports Complex) and Lots K and L (Potomac River). To “accommodate” the lack of parking, shuttle buses ran from the Ferguson parking deck to drop off at Gates of Honor and at Lot D1 (Luter Lot) behind Freeman.

41 minutes after the start of many students’ 8AM lectures, CNU released an email on Nov. 18 that there would be a parking shortage on campus due to a non-CNU event at the Ferguson Center. CNU stated that free parking is available today at the Mariners’ Museum for CNU students, faculty and staff. Oh, but don’t worry, free shuttle buses were provided to transport students from the Mariners’ Museum to campus running long after the event concluded.

On Nov. 20, portions of parking Lot I1 (Sports Complex) were closed due to Ratcliffe Hall undergoing roof repairs. Students were encouraged to use Lot F (Ferguson Center Parking Deck) instead. CNU Parking Services stated that decaled vehicles registered for Main Campus would not be ticketed for parking in Lot F, but would possibly be required to “relocate to accommodate campus events.”

Is this a joke? Genuinely, someone please tell me this is a joke. $275.00 for a parking pass for spots you’re not even guaranteed to park in. Respectfully, but also disrespectfully, I am not paying to take a shuttle bus across campus. I’m paying for parking on the main campus. On a good day, it is still a constant battle for students to find parking, predominantly affecting commuter students.

How do we solve this problem on a campus with extremely limited space to expand parking to begin with? Maybe, just maybe, we stop over selling parking spots, we stop selling parking spots to freshmen and stop closing lots for non-CNU events that push out students who have already paid for their spot.

As for football, I understand there is nowhere else for tailgates to be hosted, but to be totally honest I do not attend CNU for its D3 football team. As a resident of Potomac River Hall, I am so tired of waking up to another email about how Lots K and L are closed once again and I’ll need to hunt for parking if I can even find a space. Not only does this severely impact commuters, who by the way also pay the same whopping $275 decal price that every other student pays even though their vehicles spend less time on campus, but it’s simply disrespectful to every student who is not getting what they pay for. It’s like, “good morning, CNU! Please take the time to move your vehicles from the spot you paid for so we can use the spaces you’re paying for, for other things! Don’t have time? Can’t find a space? That sucks, here’s a ticket, because we want even more of your money! Oh and by the way, we’re raising the cost of tuition! Have a great day.”

I get it, there are far and few options for parking developments due to where CNU is located, however, that’s not my problem to solve. Nor should it be a problem for any student who is already paying for their parking space. I am so beyond fed up with the parking situation here at CNU. This school is great at many things, its parking situation is certainly not one of them.

Switching back to DVD players:

Stop paying to see advertisements

KATHERINE ZICKEL KATHERINE.ZICKEL.22@CNU.EDU

Nothing sounds more relaxing than making a cup of hot chocolate, popping some popcorn and watching a comfort holiday movie before the stress of finals kicks in. You log onto a streaming service to set up the movie, but WAIT, suddenly an ADVERTISEMENT pops up halfway through your movie and totally ruins the vibe. Sound familiar? This very scenario happened to me last week, and it was my final straw. I’m so sick of streaming platforms now having ridiculously long advertisements multiple times during the movie or show I want to watch. I already pay a monthly subscription to get access to all the shows and movies on there, so why would I want to upgrade my plan just to not have ads?

Remember the good old days of DVD players? When you wanted to watch a movie as a kid, all you had to do was convince your parents to pay a one time fee of under 20 bucks for the actual hard copy of the movie or TV show, and then you were set for life. The most annoying part was you and your siblings arguing over which movie to watch and having to blow on the disc if it became scratched. Fortunately, my parents saved all of our old CDs, and we still have our DVD

“I’m so sick of streaming platforms now having ridiculously long advertisements multiple times during the movie or show I want to watch.”

player, so I’ve decided to transition back to the days of the early 2000s and watch movies and shows via CDs.

The great thing is if you haven’t saved your DVDs from childhood, places such as Second and Charles sell them at prices under 10 dollars, or look to your local library and borrow them for free.

I know I’m not the only one that has made the transition back to older forms of media. My social media feed has shown multiple users expressing their aggravation of having to pay for advertisements, especially on services such as Netflix who used to pride themselves on not having advertisements. Due to this, many have said they have already made the switch to DVDs. Unfortunately capitalism has changed company policies due to greed from CEOs wanting ads to make the company money and not caring about up-charging their users, so they won’t be going away anytime soon.

Instead, be reminded of simpler times and join the people who have started to use DVDs again.
