Grace Griles, Editor in Chief Grace Griles is a rising senior who is double majoring in English and Communication Studies. She is working as a Summer Resident Assistant at CNU and as a caller at CNU’s Office of Advancement.

Griles joined the Captain’s Log, also known as CLog, as a staff writer when she was a freshman.

Since Griles has journalism aspirations after graduation everything about CLog excites her! Interviewing faculty and students, taking pictures at events, and collaborating on layout with her coworkers are all aspects of CLog that Griles enjoys participating in on a weekly basis.

One of her favorite CLog memories is spontaneously getting crepes from Aux Delices with her fellow CLog members!

Allison Silverman, Head of CNUTV Allison Silverman is a rising sophomore who plans on majoring in History with a double minor in Leadership Studies and Museum Studies. She is currently working as a Resident Desk Assistant for CNU over the summer. When she was a freshman, Allison joined CNUTV, a part of the Captain’s Log. She loves CNUTV because of her passion for creating video content. She loves CNUTV because of her passion for creating video content and she especially likes creating videos that show the fun parts of life on campus. The Captain’s Log was established in 1961 and was originally called The Chris’s Crier. Just like Christopher Newport University The Captain’s Log has changed so much since then.

The motto of The Captain’s Log is “The voice of Christopher Newport University students.” As the new Editor in Chief I take this motto very seriously. One of my favorite things that our advisor Dr. Emmelhainz says “you are not CNU’s cheerleader.”

While I chose to attend this university for its many pros, it is comforting that under the protection of journalism I can express my opinion that may be different from administrators or even the president of CNU. I want to use

my time here at CLog to give the students of CNU a voice.

Some of the best parts of CNU is the student involvement. Therefore, I encourage all CNU students to take advantage of CLog. How do I get involved?

The easiest way to get involved with CLog is to take advantage of the Opinion section. Anyone can submit an opinion piece. “The Captain’s Log is free to write anything it pleases and CNU fully respects the Freed of the Press,” Paul Trible said long ago. This quote will always be put at the top of our Opinion section even though Paul Trible is retired. (continued on page 2)

She joined The Captain’s Log during her freshman year at CNU and has been the News Editor since fall of sophomore year. Evelyn enjoys interviewing people and sharing their stories with the community. Savannah Dunn, Lifestyle and Phtography Editor Savannah Dunn is a rising sophomore who plans to major in Communication Studies and minor in Journalism. Over the summer Dunn is building her at home cookie business called Sugar Coated by Savannah (@ sugarcoatedbysavannah on Instagram). Dunn first joined CLog as a staff writer as a freshman and later that fall semester became the Arts and Entertainment Editor. When she saw the need Dunn grabbed her Nikon camera and started acting as the Photography Editor without being asked. What Dunn enjoys most about CLog is collaborating with her fellow staff members in the Newsroom on layout. Ever since her first Budget Meeting Dunn has urged all of her friends to “Rush CLog,” and she urges the readers of this issue to do the same! One of Dunn’s favorite memories of CLog is filming TikToks for the CLog TikTok account (@ cnucaptianslog) with the CLog Staff.

Elijah Williams, Sports Editor Elijah William is a rising senior who is double majoring in Communication and Leadership Studies. Additionally, he is also minoring in Film Studies.

Currently. He is working at The Trible Library and as an Intern for the Center for Career Planning at CNU. Ever since his first days on CNU campus in the Fall of 2019, Elijah has been a part of the Captain’s Log, AKA - CLog, as a staff writer, gaining recognition for his bi-weekly column. Since then, Elijah has broadcast journalism aspirations after graduation. Everything from interviewing sports athletes and the Director of Sports to detailing coverage of both local and national sports games are all aspects of the CLog position that excites Elijah! One of his favorite CLog memories is filming episodes of golf cart karaoke while driving all around CNU. Justin Heller, Business Director Justin Heller is a rising sophomore double majoring in Political Science and American Studies. Coming out of Tysons Corner, Virginia, Justin spends much of his free time during the summer either working at Earls Kitchen + Bar or dominating pickup soccer games. On campus, apart from the beloved Captain’s Log, he is involved in the Pre-Law Scholars Program, Club Soccer, and the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Captain’s Log has allowed Justin to express himself, create lifelong friendships, and make countless memories with his fellow staff members. One of his favorite aspects of the Business Director position is the opportunity it gives him to connect with other students/ clubs on campus and make their voices heard.

Maggie Gammons, Social Media Manger Maggie Gammons is a rising sophomore majoring in Communication Studies and minoring in French. This summer, she is working as an intern for a marketing agency, learning how to market products and people via social media. Gammons loves how social media can connect many different people and how influential something can become. As CLog’s media manager, she is looking forward to bringing more readers to the student-run newspaper and connecting with students personally. Maggie joined Captains Log as a freshman and quickly grew to love her role as a staff writer. Her favorite thing about CLog is how welcoming the editors and members are and how easy it was to jump right into writing!

Student journalism is pertinent to creating a campus that students want.

If you are interested in exploring your writing abilities, come to our Budget Meetings! These budget meetings are once a week. What happens at these meetings is each section editor presents their story ideas and anyone is allowed to interject with ideas, comments, and offers to pick up stories.

What if I am not confident in my writing abilities?

A helpful aspect about CLog is that we have involved alumni. The minute I got the Editor in Chief position various alumni reached out to congratulate me and offer their assistance. Due to a good amount of alumni getting journalism jobs in the Hampton Roads area many are available and willing to host writing workshops. Everyone on the email list (which one can join through the QR code) will be notified about workshops ahead of time and they will be held on campus.

What if I am not interested in writing?

CNUTV has been a part of The Captain’s Log for 10+ years. Before the pandemic CNUTV was known for videos like go kart karaoke. This past year CNUTV filmed Stroll to the Polls and an interview with the Knights of the Force club. With the new Head of CNUTV being rather passionate about video editing and filming there

Peaceful Protest on The Great lawn GRACE GRILES

A completely student-led protest occurred on the Great Lawn on Oct. 25 at 1-5 pm due to the recent Sophia Nelson tweets. However, the focus of the protest was not on Nelson herself. While the group of protestors were most definitely not happy with her, they focused their energy on having a productive conversation instead. Most people at the protest were not even part of a specific organization; they were just individuals who felt compelled to stand up for the LGBTQ+ community.

Word of the protest spread through a student’s personal Instagram page, and the entire idea originally started in a private group chat. The main leaders of this protest were sophomores Karma Ingram and Abigail Honeycutt and junior Fern Stockton.

“We are the ones who started facilitating this. It actually started in one of our chats where we were discussing what happened. The three of us started talking and decided we gotta do something. We just kind of threw this together and hoped that the community would show up, and they did!” Stockton said.

The group was well organized and well equipped with supplies. There were miniature flags that they were allowing anyone to use, a tent, large flags hanging from the tent, lawn chairs, a speaker with a microphone attached, a megaphone, and a miniature speaker that Stockton used to play music. Ingram made a point to mention in their statement that none of these items were provided by CNU. “Everything that we have here is student brought,” Stockton said.

“I just thought it was really cool how a bunch of people I know have reached out and donated things. A lot of things out here don’t even come from us directly….

We didn’t want to affiliate this with CNU, so having the support from our peers has really made a difference and meant alot to us,” Ingram said.

The overall protest was peaceful. At first there was a concern of being egged, due to a random YikYak post. However, thankfully none of that happened and what occurred on the lawn was simply a community coming together. A couple people took turns speaking on the microphone to open up a dialogue about how the LGBTQ+ are treated in the CNU community and the country overall.

“People deserve to know that this is a problem in our country and in the world.

Still people are so divisive... Your opinion should not affect my livelihood and quality of life,” Honeycutt stated.

Towards the end of the protest it became rather apparent that everyone was simply excited to meet other individuals apart of the LGBTQ+ community on campus.

“I did not know there were this many queers on campus!” Stockton said.

At the end of the day the protest may have appeared small to a random observer on the Great Lawn. In reality, it had a big impact on the LGBTQ+ community at CNU. Many people who walked up to that section on the Great Lawn walked away at 5 pm knowing that they were not alone.

Ingram stated, “It was so great to see everyone who came out today, students and staff and everyone in between.

The overwhelming support we have received is what gives people like me, Abby and Fern the strength to do things like this. The support from all our friends is really what made the difference for us to be able to put this protest together how we hoped. I hope we were able to make a ripple large enough to get attention, and I hope we were able to encourage others to speak loudly and demand the respect we deserve.”

“As It Was” Review

The play is directed by Guest Artist, Egla Birmingham Hassan. According to the show’s program, Hassan “is an accomplished director and professor of theatre whose 32-year career at Western Illinois University includes heading the MFA program in directing and helping young theatre artists to find their own voice.”

Jacobs-Jenkins’ Everybody, is a modernized twist on the classic morality play, Everyman. A morality play focuses on abstract ideas personified as characters within the story that help to present a specific lesson. The Dramaturg’s Note by Dr. Laura Grace Godwin, explains that the start of the 16th century marked a dramatic change in European society, “For those seeking answers to their present predicament, actors began to offer morality plays that followed individuals struggling with daily temptations. Allegorical Virtues & Vices – personified qualities rather than characters – vied for the ultimate prize in an eternal battle: the soul of a figure representative of every man.”

The play centers around a universal character referred to as Everybody, who is suddenly confronted by Death.

Death informs them that they must take a journey to visit God where they will explain how they lived their life and why. In the process of preparing for this journey, Everybody encounters various characters representative of the different aspects of their life, such as Friendship, Family, and Stuff.

Throughout the performance, Everybody’s humorous but profoundly thought-provoking interactions with

the various abstract characters quickly reveal who or what really matters in the end. Everybody is forced to reflect on the meaning that they attach to their world and ultimately they must face the greatest and most challenging journey of their life. This deeply introspective play leads audience members to see parts of themselves and their own lives embodied in the character of Everybody.

Everybody is performed in a black box theater and set up so that the audience is seated on every side of the stage. The use of several screens with changing visuals placed around the performance area and the intimate stage layout makes it a very immersive experience for the audience who often find themselves mere feet from the actors.

What makes Jacobs-Jenkins’ adaptation of the classic play especially distinctive is that each night, the actors who play Somebodies, participate in a lottery where they draw names from a basket to determine who plays which character. Thus, the actors are challenged because they must memorize multiple characters’ lines and be ready to play whichever character that they are randomly assigned. There are 120 different possibilities that can unfold, so each performance is a truly unique and extraordinary experience for the audience.

Everybody will perform on Apr. 10 at 2:00 p.m, Apr. 15 at 7:30 p.m, and Apr. 16 at 2:00 p.m and 7:30 p.m..

After two years of no new music, Harry Styles is ready to let the world hear his latest masterpiece. An announcement on March 23 revealed that a new album labeled “Harry’s House” would be released on May 20, but he knew that we could not handle the anticipation. The first single from Harry’s House was dropped on April 1, 2022. Like many other Styles songs, the lyrics are exceedingly cryptic, but leave it to his fans to decipher the meaning behind As it Was. It opens with a little girl saying, “come on, Harry, we want to say goodnight to you” it was later revealed that the girl is Harry’s goddaughter, Ruby Winston, the daughter of filmmaker Ben Winston. While Harry has not confirmed what the song is about, he did say it is based on his personal life. The piece explains Harry Styles’s relationship with his fame and how it is not “the same as it was.” He sings, “in this world, it’s just us/ You know it’s not the same as it was’. ‘ There is also speculation that this head single is about his relationship with actress Olivia Wilde. Their relationship

came three months after her breakup with her ex-fiance, Jason Sudeikis. Sudeikis and Wilde share two kids in joint custody. Harry writes, “Leave America. Two kids follow her,” possibly referring to Olivia’s children. Other conspiracy theories are circulating regarding Harry’s third album. During the Harry Halloween show, The band and Harry dressed up as the Wizards of Oz cast, planting an easter egg of the “home” theme as the Wizards of Oz are known for the idea of finding one’s home in friends and the journey. Many fans wonder if this theme of a home will be presented throughout the album.

As It Was is also breaking records; it became Spotify’s moststreamed song in a single day in 2022 and the most-streamed song in the US in a single day in Spotify history. The song received 33.42 million streams on April 1, 2022.

I am sure this will not be the last

record broken by Harry Styles, but we will have to wait until May 20 for the rest of the album.

Fiddler on the Roof Review One of the best musicals I’ve ever seen

At the Diamonstein Theatre, Fiddler on the Roof was performed by the Broadway Tour group on March 14. The musical started at 7:30 pm and ended at 10:25 pm with a 15 minute intermission between acts one and two. There was also a merchandise stand outside of the theater in the lobby of the Diamonstein that sold things such as t-shirts, hoodies, mugs, etc. with the show’s logo on it. And what a show it was! I really enjoyed Fiddler on the Roof because it managed to be lighthearted yet serious when it needed to be. The cast was excellent, especially the dancers who had to learn some intense choreography.

Fiddler on the Roof is about Tevye (played by either Danny Arnold or Jonathan Hashmonay), a Jewish man living in the western part of Imperial Russia at the turn of the 20th century.

He has a wife named Golde (played by Maite Uzal) and five daughters. The local matchmaker named Yente (played by Brooke Wetterhahn) comes and suggests a match for the eldest daughter Tzeitel (Kelly Gabrielle Murphy) with the butcher Lazar Wolf (Andrew Hendrick).

Tevye says yes to the offer from the butcher, but Tzeitel does not want to marry him. She wants to marry Motel the tailor who is played

by Daniel Kushner. Tevye decided to let Motel and Tzeitel get married, and the two are married by the end of Act One. Two of Tevye’s other daughters Hodel (played by Ruthy Froch) and Chava (played by Noa Luz Barenblat) also want to get married, but how will their stories play out? Also, the village where Tevye and his family live have to deal with discrimination and

violent attacks from Russian authorities such as the Constable (played by Jason Thomas Sofge), but how does that impact the characters’ lives?

What makes the Fiddler on the Roof such a good musical is the songs themselves; they are all memorable in some way. The songs in the first act are so much fun with “If I Were A Rich Man” and “To Life” being highlights. The dancing done by the cast was wonderful, with a lot of Russian folk dancing because these characters are in Russia. Despite the lightheartedness of the musical, sadness creeps in when confronted with the world outside of the village, like at the end of Act One or the end of the musical. Each member of the cast were amazing singers who brought so much life to their characters. Fiddler on the Roof is also really funny, with much of the laughs coming from the matchmaker Yente and from Tevye. This was an allaround amazing performance, and one that I was privileged to see.

This musical was also a timely one, as this performance and every performance after this was dedicated to the people of Ukraine who lost their lives and their homes, including refugees.

CNU Women’s Basketball Team Ranked #1

On Monday night, the Christopher Newport University women’s basketball team made history. For the first time in program history, they were ranked number 1. They picked up 16 of the possible 25 first-place votes to claim the top spot. This was in large part due to recording a perfect 17-0 record to date as well as possessing a 34-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the nation. The Captains received a program-record 600 points in the top-25 poll.

This accomplishment is a historic moment for the school as it is only the fourth time in CNU Athletics history that a program has earned the top spot in a national poll. The other three teams that have accomplished this were the men’s soccer, baseball, and softball teams. The women’s soccer and volleyball teams ranked number 1 as well but the women’s soccer team was ranked after the regular season concluded and the volleyball team ranked number 1 before the 2012 athletic season began.

Throughout the 2021-2022 season, the Captains have been largely efficient on both offense and defense.

Offensively, Christopher Newport

ranks third in scoring offense with 88.5 points per game, third in field goal percentage with a shooting percentage of 48.1%, and a stellar point differential of +35.8. Defensively, the Captains rank fifth in the nation with 17.1 steals per game and ninth with 5.7 blocks. The fundamentals have also been a crucial part of the Captains success as they have outrebounded their opponents by a margin of +4.2, averaged a 1.2 assist to turnover ratio as well as a +14.4 turnover margin.

Individually, Senior guard Sondra Fan is leading the Captains in scoring with an average of 15.4 points per game.

She has also been shooting 54% from the field and averaging 2.6 steals per game on the defensive end. Another key contributor to the Captains offense is Sophomore Anaya Simmons, who is averaging 12.5 points per game while shooting a stellar 61.4% from the field.

She has also been averaging 3.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists

per game. Senior Natalie Terwilliger is also having a superb season on both ends, averaging 9.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and a career-best 2.4 blocked shots per game.

Most recently, the Captains defeated Mary Washington by a score of 72-50 on January 29, bringing their record to 17-0 on the season. They have played great defense all year, holding opponents to an average of 52.7 points per game. Only four games have been decided by under ten points this season.

Up next, the Captains will travel to Wheaton, Illinois to face Wheaton College on February 5 at 3:00 PM. After that, they will travel to Hancock, Michigan to take on Finlandia University on February 6 at 3:00 PM. The Captains are currently 10-0 away from the Freeman Center this season and will be putting that record to the test in their next two games.

Domination on the Court

CNU Club Men’s Volleyball spikes to victory! (From March 30th, 2022 Issue) SAVANNAH DUNN

The CNU Men’s Club Volleyball had an incredible victory this past weekend. They played against 8 other teams at a tournament hosted in the Freeman Field House and it was quite the event.

President Kyle Greber stated, “It was CNU, Old Dominion, William and Mary, Loyola, East Carolina University, VCU, and some others. We did pool play where we played three teams and that would determine your rank, and that’s how playoffs would work.” To add a little bit more fun to the tournament, Greber said they did it “March Madness style.”

Club volleyball at CNU and many other schools is extremely competitive. Men’s volleyball is not a very common sport; in the NCAA, there are only 23 division I men’s volleyball teams, but 334 division I women’s volleyball teams (according to the NCSA website).

So, naturally, most of the men’s club volleyball players are the ones who are passionate about the sport, but don’t have the opportunity to play it at a varsity level. The players in this league are the best at what they do.

Greber said, “We are blessed with the talent that we have.

Our setter, Sean Conway, is incredible. Our outside, Pawel, he’s crazy good. Just the talent we have at our school is remarkable.”

Along with most other clubs and organizations on campus, Men’s Club Volleyball had to rebuild the program after the COVID-19 pandemic put a screeching halt to a lot of activities on campus. In the fall of 2020, Greber and a couple other members were the only ones left to grow the program.

“When I entered, it wasn’t great because of COVID. They weren’t competing, practices were iffy, so coming in it was

kind of just like a blank slate.”

Greber and the remaining members of the club began building from the ground up and have worked significantly hard to make the program what it is today.

“We figured out how to fundraise, and do tournaments, and all of that stuff, and winning a huge tournament on Saturday was a really big win for us.”

After two years of rebuilding the program, the Men’s Club Volleyball team has been able to raise enough money to buy equipment, team gear, and new uniforms, along with building their reputation not just on campus, but in the Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association(ECVA).

Their victory this past weekend is just another representation of their endless commitment and hard work.

Cook considered her favorite part of the fair to be “seeing how entrepreneurship can come from any discipline.

It’s not confined to the business school, or to business majors, but open and accepting of all areas of study” and Myers considered her favorite part of the fair to be “selling my products for the first time.” I think I would have to agree with both of them as selling what you’ve made is exciting and an important first step to being a successful entrepreneur, and opening a business has to include more than just knowing how to run a business.

Both Cook and Myers want to have the fair and other events similar to this happen again, with Cook saying “There’s so much more entrepreneurship on this campus than we realize; and it’s our club’s job and mission to discover it and give a platform to these student entrepreneurs who work so hard at what they do.” That’s true, after all, I’m sure many of my fel-

The Entrepreneurship Club here at CNU put on the first Student Run Business Fair on Nov. 5 from 4-7 pm in the David Student Union. The members of the club and other students were able to showcase their small businesses. Some of these businesses include food, books, marketing advice, etc. Prominent members of the club who were integral to the set up and success of the business fair were Grace Cook, Savanna Myers, and Danielle Freeman. Grace Cook is the head of the club’s executive team, while Savanna Myers and Danielle Freeman are members of the executive team.

In interviews with both Grace Cook and Savanna Myers, Myers said “This was CNU’s first ever student run business fair; a lot of planning went into this event” and Cook said that the club “had four local businesses sponsor our club this semester: Canvas Coffee House, The Maroon Group, Virginia’s Finest Chocolate, and The DeGood Foundation” who provided financial support for the Entrepreneurship club.

Cook said the fair was a success due to the “10 amazing student vendors who sold a whole variety of different products” who were able to “put themselves out there, market to both students and staff, and expand

low students, including myself, were unaware of some of the small businesses created by students on campus. Myers said that the club “would love to make the fair a recurring semester event.”

The idea for the event was created by Grace Cook who ran most of it along with her own small business selling cheesecake. The passion and care she put into creating the business fair is easy to see, and that passion for what she does will take her places. The first Student Run Business Fair at CNU was an absolute success, and may the Entrepreneurship club and the other students involved grow their businesses and be just as successful.

A Long time ago, in a Campus close, close by….

On a cool Wednesday evening, on the steps of CNU Hall, students gather with blades from a more civilized age. They go by many names: the Star Wars Club, the Lightsaber Club, all for simplicity, but they are the Knights of the Force. A club that is both passionate about Star Wars and how to wield the weapon of the Jedi and the Sith.

They showcase their skill with either live choreography shows to the campus/community or against one another in dueling tournaments.

I talked with junior Landen Waterfield, the President or Grand Master of the Knights about the organization. Asking about the main things the organization does, Waterfield said: “So we are a combat and choreography club, basically what that means is we have a roughly even split of people who like to fight with lightsabers and people who like to show-off with choreographed routines.” Continuing our talk, Waterfield told me they have 33 due-paying members, with all members coming from different grade levels and backgrounds.

When asking about the dues, he explains that it is for both the purchase of the sabers and the maintenance of the equipment.

“We like to provide lightsabers to our prospective members, so they don’t have to make a purchase. Doing that requires biannual maintenance and purchase of new equipment. So that means the dues are $20 for new members or $15 for returning members.”

When I inquired about what styles of lightsaber training they teach, Waterfield introduced me to the club’s current Vault Guard or Treasurer and up-coming Quartermaster or Vice President, Sienna Zimmermann. Zimmermann explained that: “[We teach] six different styles. We have your normal one-handed, twohanded, duel-wielding. We got staff, we got reverse grip, and of course we have pikes.” Going into detail, they explained that when you join the club, you are an initiate, where you will learn the basics of one-handed and two-handed, before taking a test to become a padawan. After you become a padawan, you then can branch off and try the other paths/techniques, and you can switch and try each technique to figure out what style suits you. Waterfield, for example, likes duel-wielding because it was cool and allowed him better control when they participated in tournament battles, while Zimmermann

preferred pike for its reach.

When I asked them if they would recommend this club to anyone on campus, they wholeheartedly said yes. Both said that if you are a huge Star Wars fan, into science fiction, or just want to wield a lightsaber, then this is the place for you. Even if you aren’t a huge Star Wars fan, it is still a fun place to go and be surrounded by great and friendly people.
