Five things San Juan should know this week Committee reviews proposed changes to Plaza Banderas THE LATEST: San Juan Capistrano’s Design Review Committee looked at proposed changes to the planned Plaza Banderas Hotel that included moving the location of the pool, moving the location of a parking area and making modifications to an entry driveway during its July 19 meeting.

The committee voted to send the project on to the Planning Commission for further review following a presentation by project applicant Dan Friess and comments by several public speakers.

According to a city staff report, the specific modifications included moving the swimming pool from the east side of the building to the south side; moving the parking area further southward; and splitting the main entry driveway for easier traffic flow.

Three people spoke in regard to the project, including Gretchen Stroscher Thomson. Thomson, the previous owner of the Hotel Banderas site, claimed she still owns a half-acre portion of land the modified project entrance and some parking spaces would cut through. She said that she had sold other portions of land to developer Bill Griffith, but not that one.

property to Mr. Griffith and he did not respond to our offer,” Thomson said during the meeting. “We have tried subsequently to engage him in conversation regarding this property and he has not done so.

This matter can be solved and resolved very quickly if Mr. Griffith will come to the table and meet with the city and with (Stroscher Capistrano, LLC).”

In an interview with The Dispatch, Thomson said her grandmother gave the state a portion of land for an easement for Ortega Highway.

“Our contention is that once that was abandoned in the realignment of Ortega and it created approximately a half-acre… that half acre is ours,” she said.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Planning Commission will get final approval of the proposed project modifications, according to Principal Planner David Contreras.

Contreras said that before the project makes its way to the Planning Commission, the staff will review and determine who owns the land in question. —Alex Groves

Commission Explores Transfer of Utilities District THE LATEST: The Orange County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) held a meeting July 11 to further explore the possible transfer of San Juan Capistrano’s Utilities Department to another agency.

City staff members gave a brief presentation before representatives from Moulton Niguel Water District, Santa Margarita Water District and South Coast Water District gave 10-minute reports on their rates, their customer service and their future plans as part of a “Municipal Service Review” process and study session.

THE LATEST: The San Juan Capistrano Skate Park Coalition will hold its first official event on Saturday, Aug. 4, in a bid to raise funds for a city-approved skate park.

The coalition’s “Skate Jam” will take place at the San Juan Capistrano Sports Park on Camino Del Avion and will feature various ramps and pipes for kids to skate on for free. The event will also feature a taco cart, a live band and raffle giveaways.

“Everything we’re doing going forward is just to create awareness that we need to raise the money and try to get more people involved,” board member Peter Carey said.

The San Juan Capistrano City Council approved the conceptual design for the skate park on March 7, 2017, but the project’s $2 million price tag has made it difficult for the city to find funding sources for it.

Carey said various grassroots movements have popped up to raise funds for the park since its approval, only to fizzle.

“There was no really good point of contact,” Carey said, recalling early efforts to fundraise. “There was nowhere you could really donate. It was just kind of like you would get put in a circle.”

Carey and others started a 501c(3) for donation purposes earlier this year and have started various campaigns.

From dropping coins in change jars at local businesses, to buying a brick that would eventually be laid in the park, there are many ways people can donate, he said.

So far the group has raised what Carey describes as “a couple grand” but he is hoping that as more attention is brought to his cause, more people will donate— and “big investors” will follow.

“It just seems like everybody is waiting on the first one to jump,” he said. “So if we can get one big investor to jump, I think there will be some more to follow.”

Residents Pull Nomination Papers in San Juan Capistrano THE LATEST: The San Juan Capistrano City Council race officially got underway Monday, July 16, and eight residents had pulled nomination papers to run as of Thursday, July 26.

Residents Troy Bourne and Bryan Samuelson pulled papers for District 2; resident Robert Hagstrom, resident Cody Martin, incumbent City Councilwoman Kerry Ferguson and Incumbent City Councilman Derek Reeve pulled papers for District 3; and residents John Taylor and Anthony Miller pulled papers for District 4.

Potential candidates for City Council must obtain between 20 and 30 signatures from residents in the district they live before filing. The filing deadline is Aug. 10.

City Begins Street Light Conversion THE LATEST: San Juan Capistrano last week began the process of upgrading public street lights from high pressure sodium (HPS) to light emitting diode (LED) technology.

City officials say more than 1,100 street lights will be replaced, providing an estimated operating cost savings of about $100,000 per year. The work will be finished by August.

According to city officials, the new LED lights will use 60 percent less electricity than current fixtures. The total kilowatthour savings from conversion will be equivalent to 346 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

The LED lights are also expected to last longer, with the typical system having a lifecycle of 100,000 hours or 20 years.

The City Council voted 4-1 on Jan. 16 to authorize City Manager Ben Siegel to execute contracts with Siemens Industry Inc. to convert the street lights at a total cost of $452,540, including labor, materials and equipment.

Weekend Trolley Service Attracts Thousands in First Month City officials announced that weekend trolley service has surpassed 4,000 riders and is averaging 18 boardings per hour since service started back up last month.

The service, which was started June 8, will run on weekends through Sept. 3.

Two trolleys will loop from La Zanja Street in downtown San Juan Capistrano to a Dana Point trolley service connection stop at Stonehill Drive and Del Obispo Street. The trolleys operate on 20-minute service frequencies.

Some of the locations the Metrolink will stop include El Adobe Plaza, Rancho Alipaz, The Ecology Center, the San Juan Capistrano Regional Library and Ortega Highway.

Authorities Search for Suspect in South County Robbery A man asking a woman for directions to San Juan Capistrano ended up robbing her and authorities were asking for the public’s help in finding him, officials said.

The robbery happened about 10 p.m.

Monday, July 16, after the woman parked her car outside her home near El Dorado Park in Mission Viejo, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Department officials.

After she parked, the man exited the passenger side of a nearby vehicle and asked how to get to San Juan. Just afterward is when officials say he pointed a gun at her and demanded her wallet.

The man was described as Hispanic and in his late 20s or early 30s. He had short dark hair, brown eyes and a possible tattoo on the left side of his neck.

The crash was reported shortly before 5:30 a.m. on a portion of the highway just east of the Ortega Flats Campground and about 7 miles from Rancho Mission Viejo.

According to a news release from CHP Officer Rafael Reynoso, 43-year-old Ma Maureen Mendoza was driving a 2016 BMW east at an undetermined rate of speed when for unknown reasons she veered into the opposite lane.

The BMW struck a 2015 Chevrolet truck being driven by a 27-year-old Winchester man. The truck had been traveling at a speed of about 60 mph.

Mendoza was pronounced dead at the scene by the Orange County Fire Authority. The Winchester man was hospitalized with major injuries.

The eastbound side of the Ortega was closed for several hours as officers investigated.

State Senator Bates Issues Statement on California Water Commission Approval California State Senator Patricia Bates issued a statement this week praising the California Water Commission after it announced its approval to allocate $2.7 billion to build a variety of water storage projects using funds from Proposition 1, the Water Quality, Supply, and Infrastructure Improvement Act of 2014.

“Four years ago, voters overwhelmingly approved Prop. 1 Since then, the allocation of funds to build much-needed water storage has been slow. The announcement of funding awards by the California Water Commission is a small step in the right direction for California families,” Bates

said. “While I’m disappointed the Commission didn’t see the value in providing more significant funding for Temperance Flat, which is important to the Central Valley and the entire state, these water storage projects are critical to ensuring California provides water for its 40 million citizens into the future.”

Proposition 1 authorizes $7.45 billion in general obligation bonds to protect and restore water supply infrastructure projects. Bond funding can also be put towards surface and groundwater storage and drinking water protections.

Man Killed in Head-On Crash A 36-year-old Santa Ana man was killed Friday evening, July 13, when his motorcycle crashed head-on into a passenger vehicle on the Ortega Highway, a California Highway Patrol official said.

The crash was reported shortly before 7 p.m. about 14 miles east of where the highway intersects with Interstate 5, according to a news release from CHP Officer Rafael Reynoso.

The man was riding his 2016 Harley Davidson motorcycle west on the freeway just west of Mile Post Marker 14 when for unknown reasons he lost control of the motorcycle, went into the eastbound lane and crashed head-on into a vehicle described as a 2015 Dodge, according to Reynoso.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by the Orange County Fire Authority.

The driver of the Dodge, a 26-year-old Temecula man, suffered minor injuries.

A Heart for Long-Term Care Local doctor, engineer craft design for new model of artificial heart

S

outh County resident Vince Abello vividly remembers the more than one-year period that he was living with an artificial heart, awaiting a permanent transplant.

Abello said the artificial heart, from company SynCardia, was a blessing because it allowed him some movement and freedom after a long time spent connected to machinery in the hospital, but the heart also had its downsides.

Abello had to carry around a 17-pound external air pump with him everywhere and had tubing protruding from his chest area. He couldn’t swim and couldn’t take long trips out of the area.

He also lived with the knowledge that the SynCardia heart was only temporary and that another surgery was around the corner.

“You just don’t want to keep going back in that surgery room, because that’s horrifying,” he said.

Abello is one of hundreds of people across the country who have to utilize the SynCardia heart, which is intended only as a temporary solution for patients as they await a possible heart transplant.

San Juan Capistrano resident Peter DeSilva, a family physician, and Rancho Santa Margarita resident Steve Smith, a master pump engineer, are hoping to change that.

Since 2013 they’ve been working on a bionic heart with no external features they hope patients will be able to utilize permanently.

“This will be, eventually, destination therapy,” DeSilva said. “It means you plug it in and play. That’s it.”

HOW IT WORKS The heart, dubbed the Freedom Heart, would have four chambers like an actual heart, but would not have parts prone to failure such as valves, seals and gaskets.

Because all components of the system would be inside the body, DeSilva and Smith are hoping that people will be able to jog, bike and even swim.

DeSilva said the heart was made with redundancies, so if any particular component were to fail another component would assume that function.

Heart’s four turbines were to stop working, the other three would pick up the slack until something could be done to repair the non-functioning motor.

The heart would be Bluetooth-enabled and would be able to send notifications to the cell phones of both a patient and their cardiologist if a part starts to have mechanical issues.

Though the heart will be powered by two batteries, those batteries will likely be powered through induction from inside the body.

DeSilva and Smith are also hoping the Freedom Heart would eliminate the need for anti-rejection medications that heart transplant patients need. The medications lower a patient’s immune response and can make the person more susceptible to certain illnesses.

“It’s all made of biocompatible material,” DeSilva said. “So in other words your body is oblivious to it; it doesn’t even know that it’s there.”

AN IDEA EMERGES Smith first started to formulate the idea for a bionic heart in 2013 while he was working on a pump to spray radar absorption material onto Northrop Grumman B-2 Stealth Bombers. He wondered whether the certain parts of the pump could be used for an artificial heart.

He brought his idea to DeSilva, who he had known for years, and the two started to explore the concept.

“It would have pumped fine,” Smith said of an initial design. “But it would kill blood left and right. It was never really a concept

that was validated. It was more of a starting point.”

DeSilva and Smith went through more than 50 design changes. DeSilva said that often after being finished with his medical practice for the day, he would meet with Smith and they would consider ideas for the heart design for hours.

The partners applied for a patent in 2013, and in 2016, it was granted.

Since then, the duo has continued to make modifications as they work with University of Southern California heart surgeon Mark Cunningham. Cunningham has offered insight into how to make the heart easier to transplant during surgery.

WHERE THE PROJECT IS GOING DeSilva said the company he and Smith started, California Cardiac Solutions Inc., has received about $1.5 million in investor funding. He stated that this will enable the company to perform bench testing where antifreeze – which is similar to the thickness of blood – will be run through the heart to measure such things as flow and pressure.

DeSilva said the next funding hurdle will be obtaining about $5 million to do animal testing necessary for FDA approval.

He said the final step will be trying to get acquired by a larger company with the resources to begin clinical trials and eventually distribute the heart at some point in the future. He says the company is hoping to be acquired by 2020.

“We’re going to let them to do that,” De Silva said. “They’ll have an uptick in their stock value because of a new product com-

ing in, they use that money from the public to be able to do the clinical studies and then they license that to companies all around the world and then each country will decide what kind of patient they’re going to use it in and how they’re going to use it.”

DeSilva says that he’s been met with resistance on the project from various investors who have told him what he’s trying to accomplish can’t be done.

Though he’s still in the early stages of putting together the heart, DeSilva said he has already made it further than a lot of investors thought he would.

“There are a lot of things that people said couldn’t be done and we’re proving them wrong, one step at a time,” he said.

A DIFFERENT TRAJECTORY FOR HEART PATIENTS These days Vince Abello is doing much better since receiving a permanent heart transplant and enjoys a fairly active life, though he still has some limitations.

Taking a combination of anti-rejection medications compromises his immune system, so there’s always a risk when he’s going out to sporting events or crowded locations.

Abello said he wishes something like the Freedom Heart existed when he was first scheduled for transplant because he wouldn’t have had to go through the difficulty of more than one surgery.

“That’s everyone, even a healthy person’s, dream,” Abello said. “To have something that’s more high performance than what you have maybe. I would have begged for it.” CD www.thecapistranodispatch.com

Letters to the Editor RECORDS REQUESTS FROM TCA TAKE TOO LONG —Eva O’Keefe, San Clemente Legislation enacting the California Public Records Act (CPRA) was signed in 1968, culminating a 15-year-long effort to create a general records law for California.

The fundamental idea of the law is that, “Access to information concerning the conduct of the people’s business is a fundamental and necessary right of every person in this state.”

Most of the reasons for withholding information from a CPRA records request is very specific and is spelled out in the legislation.

The public has been requesting documents of the Transportation Corridor Agency (TCA) because it hasn’t been transparent with its information. The records requests ask for information to find where they are in the toll road process, how they spend their money on directors and consultants, to make sure the agency is acting within the law and its charter and other items. Most recently, the public has asked about the geological findings for route 14 through the center of San Clemente.

But the public never gets all the information because the TCA seems to think that they are above the law and simply ignore these records requests. Dozens of requests to the TCA have gone unanswered. Some requests are over three months old.

A formal complaint has been made with District Attorney Tony Rackauckas and TCA board members Brian Maryott and Kathy Ward.

The TCA may have their consultants spin their business practices as “transparent,” but the public gets to make that determination on their own. TCA, fulfill your civic duty and comply with the CPRA requests.

HUNTING SHOULD BE DONE IN THE QUICKEST, LEAST PAINFUL WAY —Wes Correll, Irvine Thank you for the article. I do not know enough about the conservative effects of hunting to form an intelligent opinion.

I would rather Mother Nature take care of the “conservation” of animals without the interference of mankind, but obviously that ship sailed long ago.

is fine with me and certainly within his rights.

However, using an arrow to kill the animal must certainly cause more pain than being shot with a bullet. I have done research on this subject but again, I realize I’m not an expert on this matter either.

I believe the killing should be done in the quickest, most reasonable and least painful manner available.

If Mr. Erskine truly believes he does not enjoy the “thrill” then he should reevaluate the increased pain and suffering he may be inflicting on these innocent animals.

Should Mr. Erskine continue to use a bow and arrow to kill, I hope he will at least become honest about it.

MORE TO SONGS THAN MEETS THE EYE —Mike Russell, San Clemente Jake Howard’s report in the July 19-25 edition of the San Clemente Times on his tour of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station was both interesting and balanced. Nevertheless, some additional information may be helpful to your readers.

Regarding the seawall, it was designed and built to protect the Unit 1 reactor, which operated from 1967 through 1992 against a tsunami caused by the maximum credible offshore earthquake and the maximum credible storm surge, if these events occurred at the same time.

Check with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, who prepared a safety evaluation report before issuing an operating license.

Regarding transferring used nuclear fuel from wet storage to dry storage, that project is scheduled to be completed next year. Check with Dr. David G. Victor (University of California, San Diego) who is the chairman of the San Onofre Community Engagement Panel.

Regarding the permanent home for used nuclear fuel, a deep geological repository has already been built in Yucca Mountain near the Nevada Nuclear Test Site. Only political gridlock in Washington, D.C. prevents used nuclear fuel from being shipped out of our backyards.

and nasty and not all chronically homeless are refusing resources.

I know some of them are and act that way, but, in my opinion shouldn’t we take that chance? I believe there are two steps. We need to get those that are currently homeless back on their feet, or the help they need because as many people have expressed, and I believe, homeless communities attract more homeless with easier access to things like drugs that encourage continuance of their homeless experience.

Also, and not that the small city of Dana Point can fix this, but where is the discussion as to the actual cause of the homelessness. We can deal with the symptoms but are focused on fixing the disease.

There is a lot of discussion of “quality of life issues,” but where is the discussion about what tangible impacts issues such as lack of affordable housing and increased youth opioid abuse are having on increasing homeless.

We can blame it on sober living homes all we want, but remember, as the author stated, the majority of our homeless are actually region/local.

FAR FROM THE WHOLE STORY —Steve Jorgensen, Dana Point Your article, “Aiming for the Future,” omitted a few facts about the conservation problem. The biggest and best conservation efforts are put forth by our national, state and county parks. Our tax dollars.

You omitted groups like The Nature Conservancy, National Wildlife, the Sierra Club, etc. You did mention Audubon, but you made it sound like a hunters’ group. I think it’s made up more of birders and it formed to stop the market hunting of birds for meat and feathers (for women’s hats).

Hunting may be a spiritual experience for a few hunters, but I don’t believe it’s that “spiritual” for the hunted. Your demystification of conservation came by way of hunters and California Fish and Game and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife. They’re fine, but they cater to hunters and fisherman. They’re far from the whole story.

Also, big mule deer aren’t usually referred to as members of the elk family.

Elk are sometimes referred to as members of the deer family.

Sure, Dana Point is seeing an increase in homelessness like most all of Southern California, but it was refreshing to see a bit of humanity on the streets of Dana Point.

uch like how Richard Linklater showed us what it was like to grow up in the mid2000s with Boyhood (2014), comedian Bo Burnham takes a break from his stand-up gigs to give us a representation of childhood in the mid-2010s with Eighth Grade. But Burnham’s coming-of-age feature doesn’t take place over a whole decade or use the slightly pretentious method of filming for literally 12 years. It takes place in just one week, the final week of eighth grade.

Thirteen-year-old Kayla Day (Elsie Fisher) lives in the New York suburbs and is an average tween in the early 21st century. She has more online followers than friends she socializes with outside, and she hosts her own YouTube advice vlog.

It’s the last week of eighth grade, but she doesn’t feel any more mature or confident than she did back in sixth grade. Within the next few days, Elsie goes to a birthday party for one of the popular girls in school (Catherine Oliviere), meets some older high school friends and tries not to get embarrassed by her dad (Josh Hamilton).

Eighth Grade features completely unknown actors and feels even more like a faux-documentary than Boyhood did. Fisher is cast perfectly, as she looks exactly like your ordinary middle-schooler, with zits and all. It would be easy to just say her performance is good because she’s “playing herself,” but it takes genuine talent to carry the two dramatic scenes near the end. For some, Burnham’s piece might hit too close to home, but it is an authentic account of the most awkward years in life. CD www.thecapistranodispatch.com

The business, which offers handcrafted frozen yogurt and a wide assortment of toppings, opened at the Sendero Marketplace on June 20.

Visitors can find both non-fat and low-fat frozen yogurt and ice cream using milk that contains no antibiotics or added hormones, according to a news release.

“Yogurtland is never boring and there is always something for employees to be doing whether it’s attending to branding details like making sure the strawberries in the water machine are properly cut, cleaning many times a day and even delicate machine calibration,” she said. “It takes a great work ethic and a kid willing to take initiative and multi-task.”

The Rancho Mission Viejo Yogurtland is just one of more than 320 locations across the nation and around the globe.

Community Members Celebrated During Chamber Installation Dinner ALEX GROVES, THE CAPISTRANO DISPATCH

M

embers of San Juan Capistrano’s business community packed nearly every table at a room in El Adobe De Capistrano restaurant on Thursday, July 12, for an awards dinner.

The 2018 Installation Dinner & Awards recognized people in such categories as Man and Woman of the Year; Citizen of the Year; Business of the Year and Ambassador of the Year. After awards were given out, officers and directors for the Chamber of Commerce were sworn in for the 2018-2019 year.

Citizen of the Year Gary M. Campbell, who died in November 2017, was posthumously recognized as citizen of the year.

Campbell’s wife, former Mayor Collene Campbell, and Campbell’s grandchildren accepted the award on his behalf.

Event presenter Kathy Hooper said Campbell was instrumental in helping to get a stage built in the city’s downtown park in the early 2000s, something he did in secrecy as a surprise for his wife.

Campbell donated $140,000 and oversaw the stage’s permitting and construction.

“It is now a prominent fixture in our little town,” Hooper said, “And for citizens, for years to come, to enjoy.”

Man and Woman of the Year Ricardo and Rosa Beas, owners of Mexican restaurant Ricardo’s Place, were recognized as man and woman of the year.

Hooper said the two are mainstays at many community events and if they can’t attend personally, they’ll send someone in their absence.

She said that when they travel to other places, they love to talk about their home in San Juan Capistrano. When they’re back from their travels, she said, they love to share the photos and stories of where they’ve been with locals.

“Both of them have million dollar smiles, they have huge hearts, they have huge community spirit and are so loved by our citizens,” she said.

Viejo CEO Tony Moiso, was honored with the Ambassador of the Year designation.

A resolution from State Senator Pat Bates noted that Vann has been a loyal advocate for development company Rancho Mission Viejo. It says she has also been active in the San Juan Capistrano community and its organizations.

Moiso took the stage to praise his assistant for her 34 years of work.

Moiso said Vann has been, “a great ambassador, not only for the ranch, but for the community of San Juan Capistrano.

Sprucing Up Your Garden Restoring the Mission After Summer Heatwaves

he latest summer heat wave has not only wore me out, it’s clearly worn out my numerous perennials and succulents throughout my entire garden and has left behind singed leaf litter in its wake.

As I assess my plant damage this week, I realize I have helpful options to cure the various bald spots throughout my garden.

I also have the opportunity to prepare for the rest of the summer and fall as well as any more heat waves we may have in the coming months.

There can be a huge cost to do a major garden fix, especially if the latest heat wave has destroyed your annuals, perennials, shrubs, container plants and vegetable gardens as it did to my garden. You DIRT THERAPY may have entertaining

I was inspired to write this article because I’m navigating what I have to do myself. I’m on a deadline to spruce up my gardens before I host a party for the local garden club this September.

Don’t fret. I have some solutions to share whether your garden is large like mine or you have a small patio garden.

My good friend Mike Evans, co-owner of Tree of Life Nursery in San Juan Capistrano, has shared with me many plants that can be planted now in the heat and give you summer and fall bloom.

Tree of Life Nursery carries a vast array of California native plants as well as natives from the low elevation of the Sonoran Deserts of Baja California, Arizona and Northern Mexico. Mike said Sonoran Desert plants thrive in those regions because of an interesting climatic phenomenon known as “bimodal rainy season.” Unlike our plants on the cool continental coast, he said, Sonoran plants get their rain in both winter and summer. They will bloom accordingly.

“This bit of plant ecology works in the favor of the California gardeners who don’t mind providing a little summer irrigation to their Southwestern gardens,” he said. “The plants reply with colorful blooms.”

For smaller patio homes, refresh areas along the sidewalk or curb with a drought tolerant ground cover. Although not a native plant, I prefer to work with sedum ground covers for smaller spaces. Check with Plant Depot of San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point Nursery, Shore Nursery of San Clemente or San Juan Capistrano’s Armstrong Gardens for their selections of colorful summer ground covers and sedums.

This is a great time to take advantage of any of these nurseries’ summer sales for fall colorful annuals and perennials for your containers.

It’s possible to have instant curbside appeal for any size garden. Visit a local nursery this weekend and see what you discover. Be sure to garden responsibly.

lthough the Landmarks Club had successfully preserved what had remained of Mission San Juan Capistrano in 1896, much work still needed to be done to restore the site to any resemblance of it’s past glory.

After a chance meeting with a priest from San Juan Capistrano who cared for the town’s parishioners, Father St. John O’Sullivan decided to visit the mission in July 1910. Little did he know the journey that brought him here would lead not only to the restoration of the mission but also his own health.

Father O’Sullivan greatly admired the beauty and grandeur of the mission from the moment he arrived. He was fascinated with the mission and set about learning its history which he recorded in a small book entitled Little Chapters About San Juan Capistrano.

He also lamented the mission’s overwhelming neglect: “How did it come about that the place was left to fall to ruin…?” And, although Father O’Sullivan had been ill for many years, he set forth to rebuild the crumbling mission with his own hands. He requested that he be caretaker of the place and, as he continued to work, his health began to return.

Weeds were cleared, floors were retiled, beams installed, and the dilapidated picket fence was replaced. The list of tasks was long, and funds were low, so beginning on May 9, 1916, Father O’Sullivan imposed an admission fee of ten cents. Although it was initially protested by local residents, admission was later raised to a quarter, and it was with these funds Father O’Sullivan was able to THEN & NOW continue his restoration

De Haan The first record kept of the number of visitors to the mission was in 1916 which indicates that about 5,000 people wandered through the majestic ruins. Seven years later, in 1923, nearly 70,000 visitors paid to gain admission onto the grounds.

Today, hundreds of thousands of people every year can enjoy the mission to learn, be inspired, contemplate its history, and spend a few restful moments within its tranquil walls thanks to the dedicated efforts of one determined priest.

Back to School As summer closes, San Juan Hills football learns about its new structure

ummer camp has closed, fall camp opens on Monday, June 30 and real, competitive football is around the corner.

San Juan Hills coach Rob Frith’s first summer with the Stallions came to a close, and the transition has continued on a positive note.

“It’s awesome,” Frith said. “The kids have been great. The coaching staff is working long hours. I feel we’ve had a very productive summer. Our practices have been very well structured.”

Frith is running with the college model, which he said most teams run now. The

key to the model is efficiency as Frith said they work for an hour and 35 minutes getting kids in and out.

The model has allowed the team to build on the program former coach Aaron Flowers built up and makes for an easy transition for Frith.

“Following off of what was already established here,” Frith said, “they had a good thing going on here. It’s a wonderful school, very supportive of football. I wanted to get to know the players and know them personally. It was about building trust. During the transitional period, things are going to be okay.”

“There’s a blue collar mentality. A lot of that was already in place. We’re running these high tempo practices, and they know when we blow the whistle, its work time.”

Evidence of that work came near the end of camp as San Juan Hills took the lineman portion of the Huntington Beach passing and lineman competition on Saturday, July 21. While the competition consists of feats of strength in weightlifting and exhibitions of appetite in the hot dog eating contest, Frith was more pleased with the camaraderie shown and created.

“The way they structure it, there were some good events,” Frith said. “It’s more about team building with that group. I

liked the way our guys came to compete, whether it was eating hot dogs or lifting weights. I think if they would have thrown in checkers, it would have been the same.

They support each other and they work hard. It’s huge for a group of linemen where they all have to work together and be on the same page.”

The linemen group will have plenty of attention with Sean Rhyan returning for his senior season. The 6-foot-6, 295-pound, four-star tackle currently has 14 college offers including 10 Pac-12 schools along with Alabama, Nebraska, Notre Dame and South Carolina.

The defense has plenty of strong returners with guys like junior Joey Hobert and senior Caden Vaughn in the secondary and seniors Shane Roberson and Cade Albright on the defensive line. However, Rhyan and senior running back Chase Monarch are two of just a few of returners on a fresh-faced offense.

Finding who can fill those offensive slots is a big part about what summer’s been for Frith’s group.

“We needed to make sure that we are putting the right guys in the right positions to be successful,” Frith said.

“Summer is about figuring out who is going to give us the best opportunity to

TWO JSERRA PLAYERS HEAD TO USA BASEBALL TRIALS JSerra sophomores Gage Jump and Cody Schrier were selected to an initial roster of 54 for the 2018 USA Baseball 15U National Team Trials.

Eighteen more players will be added after the 14U National Team program finishes to finalize a 72-man roster for Phase 1 of the trials. Phase 1 begins on Saturday, July 29 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.

The roster will be cut to 34 for Phase 2 that begins on Aug. 1. Phase 2 will finalize the 20-man roster that will take part in a training camp from Aug. 4-7 to prepare for the 2018 World Baseball Softball Confederation U-15 Baseball World Cup. The World Cup begins on Aug. 10 in Panama.

Jump and Schrier both made the varsity JSerra roster as freshmen last season. Jump, an Aliso Viejo native, was strong on the mound for a loaded JSerra starting rotation. Schrier, a San Clemente resident, is a middle infielder for the Lions and verbally committed to USC in November of 2017 well before his freshman season started.

Beside the lack of contact and pads, Frith has tried to operate summer as an extension of fall camp. The high tempo practices are structured in the same way the Stallions will prepare for games in the fall.

As fall camp opens on Monday, July 30 and the season kicking off for San Juan Hills at home against Orange Lutheran of the Trinity League on Aug. 17, Frith is like many whose excitement is ramping up.

“The season’s getting closer, closer to actually playing real football, game planning, the week in and week out grind, assessing your opponent,” Frith said, “that part of it I’m looking forward to. I’m looking forward to competing on a week to week basis.” CD www.thecapistranodispatch.com
