Five things San Juan should know this week Two Men Found Dead in Vehicles in San Juan Capistrano, Same Day THE LATEST: Two men who were found dead in vehicles in San Juan Capistrano on Camino Las Ramblas and in the California Highway Patrol (CHP) parking lot on Camino Capistrano on Tuesday, May 29 are being investigated as unrelated suicides, according to authorities.

The first incident on May 29 was the death of a San Juan Capistrano male in his 40s who was found in a car on Camino Las Ramblas. The death is being investigated as a suicide, according to San Juan Capistrano Chief of Police Carl Bulanek.

Bulanek confirmed on Wednesday, May 30 that the incident appears to be a suicide and that the man was deceased upon arrival of Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) deputies at around 11:30 a.m. on May 29. Deputies responded to a call from a passerby and found the man dead inside the vehicle on Camino Las Ramblas, toward the northwest end of the road where there are not many residencies, Bulanek said.

doesn’t appear that there is anything suspicious at this point,” Bulanek said.

The second incident, a suspected suicide, was a 60-year-old Mission Viejo man found in a vehicle in the parking lot of the San Juan Capistrano CHP office at 32951 Camino Capistrano, according to a CHP press release. A CHP officer conducted a welfare check on the individual at approximately 1:30 p.m. and the officer found that the man was unresponsive, then was pronounced deceased by the Orange County Fire Authority.

“No foul play is suspected,” the press release said.

San Juan Capistrano Launches Free Summer Weekend Trolley Services THE LATEST: A free trolley service is coming back to San Juan Capistrano this summer, beginning Friday, June 8 and ending Monday, Sept. 3.

The service will operate every weekend for 13 consecutive weekends from June 8 to Sept. 3, with two trolleys on 20-minute frequencies. The routes will follow a continuous loop from downtown San Juan Capistrano, at La Zanja Street, to a Dana Point trolley service connection stop at Stonehill Drive and Del Obispo Street.

“The city’s 2017 trolley service was extremely successful and received very favorable reviews from residents and visitors,” a San Juan Capistrano city press release said. “The service carried over 11,000 passengers and averaged approximately 18 riders per hour, per trolley.”

Service hours for the trolley will be Fridays from 5-9 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The route: starting from the Metrolink Station at Verdugo Street, going south on Camino Capistrano to Del Obispo Street, west on Del Obispo Street to Alipaz Street, south on Alipaz street to Camino Del Avion, west on Camino Del Avion to Del Obispo Street, south on Del Obispo Street to Stone Hill Drive—where the connection point to the Dana Point summer trolley service meets. From there, the trolley route heads east on Stonehill Drive to Camino Capistrano, north on Camino Capistrano to La Zanja Street, east on La Zanja Street to El Camino Real, south on El Camino Real to Ortega Highway, west on Ortega Highway to Camino Capistrano, and south on Camino Capistrano returning to Verdugo Street and the Metrolink Station.

WHAT’S NEXT: The city is currently pursuing an additional grant funding opportunity through the Orange County Transportation Authority that, if awarded, will provide the city expanded trolley service for several years, according to the city press release. —ER

At the Next San Juan Capistrano City Council Meeting THE LATEST: With nearly a one-month gap between San Juan Capistrano City Council meetings, the meeting on Monday, June 11 is expected to have a hefty agenda.

The June 11 City Council meeting— which was rescheduled from June 5 because of the statewide primary elections— is expected to include big agenda items.

According to the city manager’s weekly update published on May 31, the next City Council meeting will touch on the 2018-19 and 2019-20 budget adoption, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) law enforcement contract, consideration of a luxury hotel incentive program and the second reading of ordinances to approve the farm specific plan tied to the Vermeulen property.

The adoption of the 2018-19 and 2019-20 budget will determine the financial future of San Juan Capistrano for the next two fiscal years. According to a city staff report from a May 7 special meeting where residents were given an opportunity to provide input on the budget, the city’s

proposed total revenue for 2018-19 is $28.2 million and for 2019-20 is $29.9 million.

The proposed expenditures for 2018-19 is $28.1 million and for 2019-20 is $29.8 million, according to the report.

The OCSD law enforcement contract comes at a pivotal time, as the city—along with 12 other nearby cities that contract with OCSD—await the findings of a study looking into the rising costs of law enforcement contracts.

The Council last discussed the possibility of a luxury hotel incentive program at its May 11 meeting, which drew controversy from Council members and residents who spoke on the item. Some claimed the program favored specific developers or ongoing hotel projects, whereas others argued that the incentive program would attract business.

The farm specific plan, along with the history of the Vermeulen property, was discussed in length at the May 15 Council meeting. Applicant Vermuelen Ranch, LLC, gained approval of a general plan amendment that switched the land use of its property from agri-business to specific precise plan, which the Council passed unanimously. The specific farm plan, a proposed plan to be considered for a second reading at the June 11 meeting, asks for 180 single-family units, a 0.5-acre park and a public trail.

Federal Judge Orders Settlement of Homeless Shelter Locations by June 13 THE LATEST: Sites for homeless shelter locations, “S.I.T.E.S.,” as spelled out in emphasis by Federal Judge David O. Carter, must be determined by Wednesday, June 13 per his order made during a status conference on May 25.

“The judge wanted three sites, or goodfaith progress, identified,” said Leon Page, the attorney for Orange County. “We are hoping that the cities and the southern part of the county can help and work with us and collaborate with the county for a feasible location for a low-barrier emergency homeless shelter. Low-barrier shelters would allow law enforcement to drop someone off.”

If there is a regional low-barrier shelter, Page said, then the police can tell someone to move on from a location if they’re loitering or sleeping illegally or take them to a shelter for the night. “There is an opportunity to give these folks security and what they need,” Page said. “Judge Carter is looking for three sites and specifically asked for north, central and south (locations). I recognize the South County cities contribute a small portion of the homeless, but it is within their interest to enforce those quality-of-life laws and identify a solution for temporary shelter.”

There’s a possibility Carter could limit the power cities have to enforce anti-camping and other laws that dissuade homeless people from staying in fire-risk canyons and other areas if the cities do not comply with the order by June 13.

WHAT’S NEXT: Recently, an Orange County Grand Jury report criticized the county’s handling of the homeless issues in the document titled, “Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way: Housing Orange County’s Chronically Homeless.” The report recommended the county and cities should develop a permanent supportive housing plan that’s proportionate to all cities as well as establishing some kind of homeless joint powers authority.

Camp Pendleton Water Report Shows No Fecal Matter Found, but Bacteria Exists THE LATEST: Reports from Camp Pendleton recently found there is no fecal matter in its water, but there were trace amounts of other bacteria.

“The installation routinely monitors for drinking water contaminants,” said Capt. Luke Weaver of the Marine Corps Installation West communications office.

“We test weekly at a minimum. Forty-nine samples were taken in the southern water system to test for the presence of coliform bacteria during April. Of those samples, 6.1 percent (3 of 49) showed the presence of total coliform bacteria. The standard is that no more than 5 percent of the total number of samples collected per month test positive for that bacteria.”

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found multiple violations in late September in the base’s water system that included a myriad of problems.

“The drinking water is safe and compliant,” Weaver said following the testing results.

Keeping San Juan Safe Meet the senior volunteers who help out Police Services

f you’ve seen a senior wearing what looks like a law enforcement uniform, either riding bicycles around San Juan Capistrano, or talking to tourists by the train station, you’ve probably encountered one of the city’s Associated Senior Action Program (ASAP) volunteers.

With contributions ranging from bike patrol, administrative support, kiosk support and van patrol, the 40-something city volunteers of ASAP’s sole purpose is to help with the police services in San Juan Capistrano.

Nearly all of the volunteers are retirees whose careers and lives vary widely, but they all have one thing in common—they love to serve San Juan Capistrano.

“I think (ASAP) is an organization where everybody kind of has common interests, whether it’s their grandkids or their kids, giving back to the city of San Juan Capistrano, the comradery is tremendous,” ASAP Bike Patrol Coordinator Dave Cox said.

Cox, a San Juan Capistrano resident of 30-plus years, regularly bikes the streets of the city keeping an eye out for any crime, namely graffiti, and also acting as a helping hand to anyone on the streets.

“We’re a pretty constant regular presence representing the city of San Juan Capistrano,” Cox said.

Bill Mase, head of operations for ASAP, estimates that with the time the volunteers dedicate, in addition to ticket fines, the ASAP volunteers contribute approximately $250,000 annually to the city. The assistance that ASAP volunteers give range from removing graffiti, giving parking tickets and also acting as a bridge between residents and law enforcement.

“The good things that we do get associated with the star,” Mase said.

By having the ASAP volunteers dedicate time to smaller tasks such as giving tickets, it gives Orange County Sheriff’s Page 4

Department deputies of San Juan Capistrano Police Services more time to dedicate to responding to calls for service or community policing.

“The public doesn’t realize how important they are to us as an agency, the (deputies) are busy handling calls and it’s hard to get involved in the community and get proactive, but we have ASAPs (who give us tips on what’s going on) and most of the time it is very helpful and maybe we can prevent something from happening,” Administrative Sgt. Virgil Asuncion said.

Once instance of when an ASAP volunteer helped to possibly prevent something bad from happening was when a train station volunteer noticed a possible drunk driver.

“I can think of a time last year when we had a drunk driving incident, one of our patrols encountered a lady down at the train station parking area and she was more than inebriated, she was almost unconscious,” ASAP Van Patrol Coordinator Jim Keen said. “There’s nothing we can do or get involved in, that takes a policeman, but we were able to phone it into dispatch and let them know where she was going at a safe distance, and she ended up being apprehended. But she could’ve cause a lot of damage.”

Asuncion and Chief of Police Services Lt. Carl Bulanek note that being able to have people on the streets who can “see something, say something,” is invaluable to keeping San Juan Capistrano safe.

“We’re not policemen, we’re not cops, but we are the eyes and ears sometimes,” Keen said.

California Primary Election Semi-Official Results See how the Nov. 6 general election will shape up after June 5; Results updated online

t was an interesting night for Californians, as many of the elections for the state’s primary races were closely watched around the nation.

Democrats in Southern California have been trying to send a “blue wave” to Congress and the Senate against a vast number of GOP-held seats, but in the 49th Congressional District primary election— which includes San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano—it was longtime tax-fighter Diane Harkey, a Republican from Dana Point, who came out on top.

It was a bit of a surprise, as three Democrats gridlocked between 4 percentage points from second to fourth. As of Thursday morning, San Juan Capistrano’s Mike Levin had the upper hand with 17.1 percent of the vote, Del Mar’s Sara Jacobs with 15.4 percent and San Clemente’s Doug Applegate with 13.1 percent.

It was Applegate who almost unseated longtime republican Rep. Darrell Issa, who had been in Congress for nearly 20 years.

Harkey went on a massive advertising campaign weeks before the election, calling herself the tax-fighting candidate and promising to reform what she said are burdensome tax policies at the federal level.

Levin, a former chair of the Orange County Democratic Party, has been campaigning since the end of the 2016 election on the back of making it easier and more attractive for industries to change to alternative energy as well as making

changes to access higher education.

Jacobs would be the youngest woman to be elected to Congress, at age 29, and has advocated for women’s access to health care, working to create jobs and more affordable housing.

Applegate, the only San Clemente candidate in the race, lost to Issa in the last election and is hoping to make his way back into the fray.

In other elections, District Attorney Tony Rackauckas is defending his seat by a narrow margin against challenger Todd Spitzer, who came in second and will face him in November. The two were well ahead of Democrats Brett Murdock and Lenore Albert-Sheridan. This particular race has drawn interest, as Rackauckas has been the Orange County District Attorney since 1998 and had a falling out with Spitzer when the two worked together at the DA’s office.

Assemblyman Bill Brough, R-73, had almost half the votes to retain his seat for a fourth term. Brough has been heavily involved in issues related to San Clemente, particularly in 2016 when he and State Sen. Patricia Bates, R-36, fought for laws that would amend satellite hospital requirements in order to facilitate the needs of the city’s only emergency room. Their bills failed in committees later on that session. Lisa Bartlett, the Republican Orange County Supervisor for District 5, ran unopposed and gained the necessary votes to retain her seat for another term. CD

San Juan Capistrano Commemorates Memorial Day The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Serra Post 3801 celebrated its annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Old Mission Graveyard on Monday, May 28.

The ceremony, which the VFW has hosted for 30-plus years, honored veterans of San Juan Capistrano. Veteran and lifelong San Juan Capistrano resident Matt Gaffney led the ceremony, which featured speeches from other veterans, in addition to Mayor Sergio Farias and Councilmember Kerry Ferguson. Gaffney read from a long list of veterans of San Juan Capistrano, naming the branch of service and wars that they served in.

Local 5th-Grade Students Create Nonprofit to Help Protect Endangered Species Students at Del Obispo Elementary School in San Juan Capistrano raised a total of $300 throughout the school year and awarded checks this week to nonprofits that try to save endangered species.

As a part of the “Be the Change Group,” a group of passionate 5th grade students at Del Obispo created a nonprofit called Rabbits to Rhinos to help with three projects they support that help protect endangered species. The students collected pinecones from across town and set up an “ecobird feeder” crafting table several times throughout the year to collect money to donate.

“The Rabbits to Rhinos group also got donations from friends, family and the community to assist with three projects they wanted to support,” Del Obispo Principal Suzanne Heck said. “They raised about $300 for these projects.”

On May 29, the students received checks to send to their three organizations: $100 to the World Wildlife Fund’s Project Rhino, $100 to VIVA Vaquita and $100 to Earth Justice’s Save the Sockeye Salmon.

The Rabbits to Rhinos group has a website, in which they outline why they chose these causes to donate to.

“Rhinos are majestic creatures and we plan to keep them alive,” the website said.

“For years and years to come, humans will be living on Earth. We need to thank Earth by taking care of it and its inhabitants.”

The website notes that there are some 30 vaquitas, a type of porpoise, left in the wild and the funds to VIVA Vaquita will go toward special nets that prevent them from being caught. The Rabbits to Rhinos website also cites concerns of water pollution that can affect the sockeye salmon populations in Alaska.

Mission Hospital Welcomes New Chief Development Officer The newest member of Mission Hospital’s executive leadership team, John D. Miller, brings “extensive leadership experience in all aspects of fundraising, with a special focus on and passion for health care,” a press release said. Miller, a new resident of San Juan Capistrano, has a diverse background of specialty in health care philanthropy and extensive community service as a church pastor.

SJHHS Student Julia Ransom Wins First Place in Escribo en Español Writing Contest San Juan Hills High School Spanish Teacher and Language Immersion Coordinator, Marlen Tong, accompanied student Julia Ransom to the awards ceremony for the Escribo en Español writing contest sponsored by the California Department of Education and the Office of Education for the Spanish Consulate last weekend.

Nearly 400 students entered this contest,

and were asked to write a literary piece, in Spanish, answering the prompt: “How does technology help me to learn?”

“SJHHS is so proud to announce that Julia was awarded first place in the non-native Spanish-speaker high school category. In her winning composition, she wrote about the power of technology to change the world,” a SJHHS press release said. “The World Language Department and (SJHHS) could not be prouder of Julia and this amazing accomplishment.”

As part of her award, Ransom was granted a two-week, all-expense paid trip to Salamanca, Spain this summer, where she will be given the opportunity to live with a host family and continue her studies in Spanish.

VOTING AND RESPONSIBILITIES —Joanna Clark, San Juan Capistrano Voter turnout in past elections has dipped from 62.3 percent of eligible citizens voting in 2008 to an estimated 57.5 percent in 2012; continuing to drop to an estimated 55.3 percent in 2016, according to bipartisanpolicy.org. In general, lower turnouts are most likely related to voter disenchantment, indifference or contentment.

Maybe a family member, your pastor, or your boss tells you how to vote, while many just do not bother to vote. In terms of household participation in presidential debates, Nielsen TV household ratings show “a drop from 59.5 percent of the first debate in 1960 to 39.9 percent for the first debate in 2012.”

The important criteria to base your decision on are the prospective candidates character, knowledge of the position they seek, respect for the Constitution and rule of law, and respect for all, regardless of the color of their skin, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, education, disability, immigration status, homelessness or religious beliefs.

Just as important as the above, is whether in the vetting process, you are convinced the candidate will work for the benefit of all, not just the billionaires and corporate elite, or their own agenda, at the expense of the poor, middle-class and disabled. In other words, will they work to ensure equality under color of law for both citizens and non-citizens, in accordance with the Constitution and rule of law?

Perhaps if we all did a better job of vetting those we vote for in order to insure they stand and support the above criteria we’d be better off. And if, or when, we make a mistake and vote for the wrong person, we don’t keep reelecting him or her. If we set the bar high enough for both ourselves and our candidate of choice, we might just reclaim our Democratic Republic.

We were a Democratic Republic at one time—of the people, by the people, for the people. We have lost our Republic because we have failed as a nation to fulfill our responsibilities to each other. As a result, our nation has become divided, and white nationalism and fascism are on the rise.

If we are going to defeat this threat, skin color, ethnicity, sex or gender, or religious beliefs should be unimportant to us in choosing a candidate. The one exception

—Hoiyin Ip, Dana Point Friday, June 8 is World Oceans Day. Last week, Sacramento considered several bills to reduce plastic pollution in the ocean. AB 2379 addresses the biggest but least-known problem. It requires clothing made from fabric that is composed of more than 50 percent synthetic material with a warning in the label, “This garment sheds plastic microfibers when washed, which contributes to marine plastic pollution.” Unfortunately, the bill became inactive.

According to Ocean Conservancy, “Microfibers have become one of the most commonly detected types of microplastic debris in water samples, found in headwater streams, rivers, soils, lakes, sediments, ocean water, the deep sea, arctic sea ice, seafood, table salt and, most recently, public drinking water.

Such widespread exposure raises concerns about potential effects to wildlife and human health.”

From workout clothes to fleece blankets, who doesn’t have some items made of synthetic material? What can individuals do until there’s a bigger and broader solution?

• Try not to buy textile made of synthetic material, use and wash only when needed.

• Hand-wash if possible. Machine wash with a shorter cycle and cold water,

run a full load to reduce friction between the clothes which would release more fibers. Air dry.

• Use a Guppyfriend washing bag that captures the microfibers released. (Available at Patagonia for $30.)

TOLL ROAD MONEY GOING DOWN THE DRAIN —Eva O’Keefe, San Clemente In the last few months, several people in the community have called out the abuses of the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA). Thank you to OC Board of Supervisors member Shawn Nelson, who expressed his utter dissatisfaction with the TCA. While at the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) Board Meeting, he indicated that the TCA has spent $210 million in the last 20 years on “advocacy.” My question is what are they advocating? To me that is “code” for boondoggle—golf, sponsorships, millions spent on public relations firms, and let’s not forget the free honey baked ham for the holidays. The next time you see a TCA advertisement in the Orange County Register or sponsorship at your local city festival, just remember that they’re using your tax dollars in the form of development fees, bailouts and Caltrans, which maintains the Toll Roads.

Thank you also to Dan Bane for so brilliantly elaborating why the TCA needs to be abolished. And thank you Assemblyman Rocky Chavez for introducing AB 382, which defunds the wasteful and corrupt TCA. The TCA hasn’t built a road in 22 years, which makes them glorified toll-booth operators. And like toll-booth operators, they are just as obsolete.

As for our Supervisor Lisa Bartlett— she continues to be the biggest cheerleader out there for the TCA and its wasteful spending, and votes every time against her constituents.

ocal country musician Shannon Rae, of San Clemente, is coming to The Coach House on Saturday, June 9, after recently releasing her second album Lucky 13.

Although Lucky 13 was released Friday, June 1, Rae’s performance at The Coach House will also be the official album release party. Rae’s music is described as country rock, “similar to Keith Urban, Shania Twain and Carrie Underwood,” according to a press release.

“It is my debut at The Coach House and I will be sharing the stage with The PettyBreakers, the No. 1 tribute band to Tom Petty,” Rae said. “I play for one hour with my band and will also perform ‘Stop Draggin My Heart Around’ with The PettyBreakers.”

Rae is accompanied by Dave Polich, producer, songwriter and keyboardist; Rick Gagliano with guitar and backing vocals; Ted Mentry on guitar; Rick Thibodeau on bass and backing vocals; and Tony Scarbrough on drums.

The six-piece band brings a rockin’ high energy performance with tunes including “Both Guns Blazin’” and “Get Lucky” with Rae on lead vocals.

Rae has been a San Clemente resident for 16 years and also performs with her band 100 Proof. Tickets for The Coach House performance can be purchased directly through her website at www.shannonrae.com.

The Stallions’ Class of 2018 Have Passion

Trustee (Jim) Reardon, Superintendent (Kirsten) Vital, former principals, parents, staff and most importantly Class of 2018, welcome to your graduation day! As I sat and reflected on the Class of 2018, one word came to mind, over and over again—passion. I can confidently say that the Class of 2018 is one of the most passionate classes ever to walk the quad at San Juan Hills High School. Passion means many different things. For this class, passion means motivation to achieve your goals.

Passion means intense enthusiasm for each other and our school. Passion means a compelling desire to change the world. Passion is what identifies the class of 2018.

According to Anna Moneymaker, “San Juan Hills is a school of pioneers. The rough and tumble of the mild Southern Californian wilderness inspired in us an ability to brave the world in all its fer-o-city, and to be unafraid of the unknown.” As a school of pioneers, you have braved the world of high school with intense enthusiasm for each other.

The Class of 2018 is full of close friends and relationships. Even after you leave this place and form new relationships, you’ll never forget the bonds you formed with the Class of 2018. As Noah Lahey put it, when he first came to San Juan Hills, “I moved into a family, and I no longer felt like a fish out of water. I felt like I belonged, and that I had support.”

Anam Faruqi said it best, “We truly made our mark on this school. We supported each other and never left anyone in the dust. That’s a class.

That’s a family. That’s senior nation.”

The Class of 2018 also stood out for your pride in our school. ASB President Bri Rodriguez remembered, “It wasn’t until this year—graduation year—that our student section at football games went completely insane. We cheered on our team to the point of hearing loss.” That student section was really something—and it didn’t just exist at football games. I saw countless examples of Stallions supporting each other at school events this year—we had passionate cheering sections at basketball games, musicals, water polo games and pep rallies. Madison Bowen, our senior class president shared, “These are the moments along our journey that have really taught us about our destination—the feelings you can’t find in the books we’ve read or solved in a math equation.”

Finally, the Class of 2018 exhibited extraordinary passion when it comes to the world outside of San Juan Hills. Members of your class organized the largest high school voter registration in Orange County this year, solidifying your class’ status as a group of movers and shakers who want to change the world. You volunteered at animal shelters, retirement and homeless shelters, and raised money for human trafficking victims, our troops and disadvantaged children. You have a compelling desire not only to leave your mark on your school, but on the world beyond your school as well.

Because of all of this passion and enthusiasm, Sam Newman says that high school is where she “discovered happiness.” She calls high school her “coming-of-age story neatly wrapped in a four-year education.” And now, it is time to take what you’ve learned and apply it to life outside of high school. As Paulina Fawnes says, “Once again, our training wheels are about to be taken off. And all of us, no matter what path we take, will enter into a new world.” Even after you leave San Juan Hills, I encourage you to show passion and enthusiasm. Take that passion that you learned here and use it to change the world. As Dalton Bourne encourages, “Be kind. Laugh. Serve. Try new things. Remember that happiness might not always be a choice, but happier is—so make it.” You are equipped to walk confidently into your futures and to keep that passion alive no matter where you go, or what you do.

In closing, as Russell Lane puts it, “Doing what you love to do with the people who share the same passion is the biggest reward of all.” You will always have a home here at San Juan Hills High School, but we are so excited to see where your passion takes you into the future. Class of 2018, it’s time to show the world how to Ride for the Brand. Best of luck and congratulations!

Ingredients of Success Reflecting on the Unique Elements That Make San Juan Hills High School

First of all, I want to say thank you to everyone here, to my family, my friends and my teachers, for helping me get here today. I want to give a special shout out to my Las Palmas family for sticking together through all the years, and to Sra. Gonzalez, te amo muchísimo.

Disclaimer: I’m in no ways a good chef. But I feel as though my experience at San Juan Hills High School has been an extraordinarily long episode of the Food Network show Chopped.

For those who don’t watch the show, on Chopped, contestants are given an eclectic basket of mystery ingredients that they must incorporate into a dish of their choice in a short period of time. The contestants with the most creative and well-executed dishes survive elimination, until the final two go head-to-head in the dessert round. Now, what sets the Chopped champion apart is the way they balance and harmonize each basket ingredient, owning the differences and quirks, to create wholly original dishes, even when making something as basic as a salad.

Over the past four years, we the Class of 2018, took advantage of all the wackiest mystery ingredients in our baskets and made them our own.

Freshman year was the appetizer round. For some of us, it took a while to appreciate the mystery ingredients in our baskets. It was safe—comfortable—to stay with our friends at freshman orientation, and stay seated during the rollercoaster.

Unlike many of the skilled chefs on Chopped who open their wacky baskets and immediately see a masterpiece in the mess of ingredients, it didn’t click that our mismatched interests, cultures and

dreams could coexist as freshmen in high school—that we didn’t need to select which parts of our identity to show to the world, and which to hide.

Now keep in mind, the unofficial rule for Chopped’s entree round is that the contestants must successfully blend the five taste groups.

Heading into this entree round of sophomore and junior year, we learned how to embrace the diverse taste groups in our basket.

Salty is the taste of the sweat and tears shed on the field.

Bitter, the strong convictions that drive our activists, journalists and leaders.

Sour, the junior year stress of trying to appease the college board.

And sweet, the triumphant final bows at a curtain call, set to the pit orchestra’s soaring notes.

Umami–the savoryness born in the overlap of other flavors—is the realization that the Class of 2018 is a unique fusion of all the other elements, and that our masterpieces aren’t confined by any preconceived expectations of how our ingredients should be used.

As we finish up the dessert round of senior year, it’s our turn to master the ice-cream machine that is graduation, and add our individual flourishes to our high school legacies.

Because, ultimately, Chopped teaches chefs how to adapt to the full range of possibilities and obstacles ahead of them, without compromising their unique culinary styles. Our time at San Juan Hills High School has taught us the same thing.

We all have the potential to be champions—as long as we aren’t afraid to disrupt the status quo in pursuit of our vision.

So bring on the next course—I’m excited for any mystery basket the judges throw our way.

N

ext restaurant up—that’s how swiftly Thai Dara 2 came into the old location of Little Thai Hut just a couple of months ago.

Thai Dara has already established itself as a formidable Thai restaurant in Dana Point, and its sequel in San Clemente has not disappointed.

That said, when trying a place that has just opened, sometimes it’s best to go with what you know and venture into something a little more interesting next time (I’ll be back, spicy shrimp and scallops).

This week, a hearty sampling of the orange

peel chicken was in order. No surprises: the outer shells were crispy but easy to penetrate, as the zesty encapsulation gave way to the steamy chicken.

This is a dish that can easily be shared, as the mountain of chicken was consumed only to the base before having to rest for dinner and try for the summit later.

If you’re really hungry, accompany the orange chicken with some of Thai Dara 2’s spring rolls.

At the Movies: ‘On Chesil Beach’ Has Too Much Sap

aoirse Ronan is rightly considered one of the best actresses of her generation—from her impressive skills in mimicking dialects to being able to deliver both comedy and drama.

She received her first Oscar nomination at age 14 for Joe Wright’s period romance Atonement (2007) then two more for Brooklyn (2015) and Lady Bird (2017). Her new movie, On Chesil Beach, is her second adaptation from Atonement author Ian McEwan.

In 1962 England, Florence Ponting (Ronan) is a music student with a love for classical music and the violin. She comes from an uptight, conservative family that doesn’t understand why she’s dating Edward Mayhew (Billy Howle). Edward is from a middle-class family with a mentally disturbed mother (Anne-Marie Duff) and majoring in

history at college. The two hit it off right away as a couple, only to discover on their wedding night that they might not be physically ready for each other.

On Chesil Beach is directed by Dominic Cooke, who makes his film debut after a career of directing stage plays, and adapted by McEwan himself. Ronan is one of those actors who fortunately can still bring a solid performance to mediocre material, which is unfortunately what we have here. Cooke’s direction is fairly basic and obviously theatre-trained, and the execution of the characters’ issues come off as too melodramatic in a bad way. Howle, while technically fine with his lines, doesn’t have much of a screen presence and is rather forgettable. Unless you’re a huge fan of Ronan or McEwan, there’s no hurry to see this one. CD

Bodhi’s Library Little Free Library coming to San Juan has heart-touching back story

B

eing in the presence of San Juan Capistrano couple Lindon and Cassie Crow, it’s inarguable that the two burst at the seams with love, both of them adorning contagious smiles and candid laughter.

It’s difficult to comprehend that just one year ago, the two faced a tragedy that any parent fears most—losing a child.

After nine months of unwavering health in Cassie’s pregnancy, the couple were expecting their first child on June 1, 2017.

Just one day short of the expected due date, something felt wrong when the baby stopped moving, and for unknown reasons, their worst fear was confirmed by doctors on May 31 that there was no longer a heartbeat.

“You know the end of the story, but you don’t want to believe it,” Lindon said about that day.

On June 3, Cassie gave birth to a boy.

His name was Bodhi, and although he was not alive, he looked perfect to Cassie and Lindon. There were mixed emotions of extreme pain, then happiness, laughter and then tears, Lindon recounted. The

couple had a photographer come after the birth to take photos, so they could always remember what their son looked like.

Following the loss of their son, family and friends tended to Cassie and Lindon for support. Cassie found an outlet for her grief by journaling, writing on social media and creating a blog about what she was going through.

Once the couple started to get back on their feet, they wanted to thank the family and friends who took care of them when they needed help most. So, Cassie and Lindon wanted to send out thank-you cards.

However, filling out a thank-you card just

didn’t feel like a good enough response to the help that the couple received, Cassie and Lindon recalled.

So, they came up with a more creative idea—to pay the thanks forward to someone else in acts of kindness.

“Once a week, I pull a card from our pile of cards, and we go ‘OK, we’re going to do something nice for someone else in the world in honor of Bodhi and the (person who they are sending the thank-you card to),” Cassie said.

The acts of kindness range, from buying someone a gift to giving a helping hand.

Cassie and Lindon also talk about Bodhi,

summer slide—the regression of reading and comprehension skills that often occurs during non-school months. As part of the reading program, there are reading logs for children, teen and adults as well as prizes and incentives to keep everyone reading this summer. Visit the library and let the wonderful staff be your guide in finding your next adventure!

Also check out the schedule of other special programs for kids and adults being offered throughout the summer, including: • Reading to a Dog with BARK. This is one of the most popular programs at the library where children read to very special licensed therapy dogs. Free to read aloud without fear of judgment, children learn to enjoy the experience of reading.

Dogs from BARK will be visiting San Juan Capistrano Library every other Thursday at 3 p.m.— June 14, June 28, July 12, July 26, Aug. 9 and Aug. 23.

• On Thursday, June 21 at 2 p.m., participants unleash their artistic talent to create their own painting of the Mission.

their experience and the joy that he gave them and how they want to continue that.

“Let’s keep talking about him and his story, what he’s done for us, it puts something good out and hopefully people will take that and keep the ball rolling,” Lindon said.

After doing the act of kindness, Lindon and Cassie write to the person who they were sending the thank-you card to, and explain what they did to pay their gratitude forward. They also encourage the letter’s recipient to do the same.

“We’re going to love this project and take care of it, and the best part of it is, is that I think it’s going to take me 18 years to get through all of the parts and do kindness acts,” Cassie said, “which I’m excited about because somebody’s going to get a card six years from now saying thank you and here’s what your support did for us and it did touch somebody else in this way.”

The next step in paying it forward for Bodhi is that there will be a Little Free Library—small, front-yard book exchanges that span the globe—with his name on it in San Juan Capistrano. The specific location is yet to be determined, but Cassie and Lindon hope that they will be able to put the library up within the next month or so. To continue the acts of kindness, the couple will be putting the “pay it forward for Bodhi” cards in the Little Free Library as well.

“Bodhi is still our son, and as much as he is not physically here, we still want to celebrate his life and have him be a part of our life; not anything crazy or weird, but we want to talk about him.” CD

SJC LIVING GUEST OPINION: On Life and Love After 50 by Tom Blake

‘Book Club’ Date Night

I

don’t often go to the movies. My partner Greta loves movies, and usually goes with friends or alone. I surprised her—and myself—by suggesting we go on Saturday over the Memorial Day weekend to the movie, Book Club, at Cinepolis in Ocean Village Ranch. It was a date night for us.

The TV ads for Book Club suggested that the movie dealt with topics that I often write about: The need for seniors to have social interaction, to get out with friends, and to keep their minds active. The genre was romantic comedy, nothing too heavy, which appealed to me.

My target audience is women ages 60-80. The four primary characters were mid-60s women who had been in a book club together for years. The actresses who played those characters—Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda and Candice Bergen are in their 70s— and, Mary Steenburgen is 65.

I knew Book Club would be primarily a “chick flick,” but thought it would be entertaining.

Most of the laughter in the movie audience, and there was plenty to laugh about, came from women. From the male perspective, I thought the movie was great.

Very funny.

Keaton plays a widow of one year, who had been married 40 years.

Fonda plays a single woman who wants no strings attached to any man because years before, she had gotten hurt.

Bergen plays a divorcee who has been celibate since her marriage ended 18 years before.

Steenburgen plays a married woman, whose 35-year marriage is in a rut.

There is a scene where Keaton, who has a fear of flying, climbs over an airplane seat, in which the male passenger is asleep, which is hilarious.

Much of the movie’s book club discussion is based on the members reading the book, Fifty Shades of Grey, and the book’s two sequels. The books inspire the actresses to reexamine their lives.

There were approximately 20 songs in the movie’s soundtrack. I loved the nostalgia of Paul Simon singing, “Late in the Evening,” Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers,’ “Runnin’ Down A Dream,” and Meatloaf’s “I’d Do Anything For Love.”

After the movie, as we walked next door to Hendrix restaurant, Greta took my arm and said, “What a great date night! I loved it.”

As we sat at the bar, enjoying a drink

and snacks, I took out a sheet of paper and jotted down some notes about the movie.

The bartender said, “I know you owned Tutor and Spunky’s Deli in Dana Point; I hope you aren’t writing a critique of our service.” I smiled and said, “Nope, I’m just making notes for my column about Book Club, the movie we just saw.”

A 60-ish woman, Cindy, and her husband, Jim, were sitting next to us. She heard my comment to the bartender and said, “Oh my gosh. We read your columns in the Dana Point Times.”

I said, “You’ll read about Book Club in an upcoming issue.”

I thought about our date night. I had changed my routine and it had paid off— my partner was happy, and we made new friends, with a bartender, and a couple,

who live in the same neighborhood where Greta has had a home for 35 years.

The Oyharzabal Barn

S

an Juan Capistrano is blessed. Yes, we are a Mission town and we were literally blessed by St. Junipero Serra when he founded the Mission in 1776. Through the years, other prominent Catholic Church dignitaries have come to our town and blessed the community.

The current Bishop of the Diocese of Orange, Kevin Vann, has come to San Juan Capistrano on several occasions, including the opening of the Mission Gift Shop and Mission Galas, and blessed our city.

Bishop Vann has stated at these events how important the preservation of history is to San Juan Capistrano, Orange County and the Catholic Church.

Perhaps the Bishop’s words have not filtered down to other Diocese members that have direct knowledge of historical preservation projects in San Juan Capistrano.

The Oyharzabal barn site is owned by the Diocese of Orange. The property, which includes the Garcia Adobe, was willed to the Diocese by Eugenie Oyharzabal. All of the property was placed on the National Registry of Historic places in 1982. The barn has always been part of the property. Before being listed on the National Registry, the property was a part of the inventory of Historic Places in San Juan Capistrano.

The significance of this property to San Juan Capistrano is important at many different levels in our history. Manuel Garcia was known as El Portuguese because of his background. He built the two story, Monterey-style building around 1841. It is the best example of a Monterey style building still standing in Orange County.

In 1857, the Juan Flores Gang terrorized San Juan Capistrano. A general store was on the first floor of the Garcia building and was raided by the Flores Gang. Flores fled the town following the raid and was eventually caught, but Garcia wanted no more of our town and left shortly after the raid.

mingo Oyharzabal in 1880. The Oyharzabal family operated it as the French Hotel until 1903. The general store continued until 1918. It was called the French Hotel because the Oyharzabals were French Basques. The Basques are a major part of the story of San Juan Capistrano.

The Oyharzabals were the largest sheep herders in the valley and also owned thousands of acres of walnut and orange groves along with being a major employer in San Juan Capistrano. It was Esteban Oyharzabal, husband of Eugenie, who developed the first water works for the town center outside of the Mission water system. The water tank was a part of the Oyharzabal property on Camino Capistrano.

Storms were not kind to the barn. Wind and rain has seriously undermined the structural integrity. There is a phrase in architectural circles that talk about benign neglect. If you leave a structure alone and do nothing to improve or stabilize it, the structure will self destruct and then one can say “too bad, but it is gone.” The first storm to cause damage to the barn was in December 2013. It was not until January 2018 that the Diocese submitted a Structural Assessment to the city, stating that the structure was in such bad shape that restoration was not possible. The Diocese is recommending tearing the barn down. It would be a shame if the community lost this one last treasure of our agricultural past.

Experts gave the same assessment on the Silvas Adobe that the Historical Society has recently restored. Sometimes the experts just don’t want to put in the extra effort that is needed to preserve historic buildings, but once history is gone it can-

San Juan Capistrano Athletes of the Year

Chosen with input from the athletic departments of San Juan Capistrano’s five high schools and Picket Fence Media sports editor Zach Cavanagh, these are The Capistrano Dispatch’s high school boys and girls athletes of the year.

Jackson Swift

Abdul-Malik McClain

FOOTBALL, SAN JUAN HILLS

FOOTBALL, JSERRA

Jackson Swift concluded his high school football career as a lynchpin of the San Juan Hills defense.

In his senior season, Swift led the Stallions with 87 tackles and was second with 51 solo tackles. He never missed a game in his three-year varsity career and had 133 tackles, eight pass deflections, two interceptions and a fumble recovery as teams avoided his side of the field.

“His value and football IQ were evident as he played multiple positions in the defensive secondary,” San Juan Hills coach Aaron Flowers said. “He has an infectious personality and a tenacity on the field that is unmatched. In his time as a Stallion, Jackson has definitely left his mark on the San Juan Hills football program.”

Swift was first-team All-South Coast League, first-team All-CIF in Division 4 and was selected to the South team for the Orange County All-Star Football Game.

Swift maintained a 4.1 GPA and will continue in the fall at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

Abdul-Malik McClain had a surging senior season for the JSerra football team.

McClain shined on defense and terrorized Trinity League quarterbacks.

He was named co-defensive player of the year in the Trinity League and racked up 18 sacks in 11 games. McClain also led the Lions with 13 tackles for loss.

McClain stood out with three sacks, four tackles for loss and a forced fumble against Orange Lutheran on Oct. 13 and also had two sacks each in games against Alemany on Sept.1, Mater Dei on Oct. 20 and Long Beach Poly on Nov. 10.

McClain’s biggest highlight came at home

against Los Alamitos on Sept. 22 He performed on both sides of the ball with two sacks on defense and 117 yards receiving with a touchdown on offense as JSerra cruised to a 32-10 win over Los Alamitos.

McClain also made waves in announcing his college plans. He had been committed to the University of California, Los Angeles before his senior season, but his breakout performance landed him more offers.

McClain signed with the University of Southern California on National Signing Day and will play there in the fall.

Katie Lukes

Isabella D’Aquila

VOLLEYBALL, SAN JUAN HILLS

SOCCER, JSERRA

Katie Lukes was Ms. Everything for the San Juan Hills girls volleyball team.

Lukes was named South Coast League MVP and All-CIF in Division 1 as the Stallions went undefeated in South Coast League play for the league title. She was also named a third-team AVCA All-American.

In her senior season, she led San Juan Hills with 485 kills, which was 100 more than her next teammate, and racked up 178 digs, 37 aces and 32 blocks with a .287 hitting percentage.

“Katie put in the hard work day in and day out to continue to improve every aspect of her game throughout the season,” San Juan Hills coach Jessica Papell said. “Katie kept improving both her skills and her mental game, and what really stands out are the big improvements she made to her serving game as she developed into one of our most effective and consistent servers as the season went on.”

Lukes will continue to play volleyball at the University of San Diego in the fall.

Isabella D’Aquila dominated the Orange County soccer landscape once again this season.

As a junior, D’Aquila was again the Lions’ most important player. She matched and surpassed her goal totals as a sophomore, going from 34 to 39. D’Aquila added 15 assists to help the JSerra juggernaut.

For all of her scoring totals, she was named offensive MVP of the Trinity League.

D’Aquila scored in bunches with four separate four-goal performances this season, including a season-high five goals against El Toro on Nov. 30.

D’Aquila also had a knack for scoring the most important goals.

She scored a goal and added two assists in the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals as JSerra fought off an early goal against to defeat Santiago of Corona.

In the Division 1 final against rival Santa Margarita, D’Aquila broke a scoreless tie with the lone goal of the game to win the CIF-SS title for a second straight season.

D’Aquila is part of the U.S. U-17 national team and is committed to Santa Clara University, but she also has one more year to dominate at JSerra.

VOLLEYBALL/SOCCER, SADDLEBACK VALLEY CHRISTIAN

Ryan Cragun did everything except paint the lines on the field for the St. Margaret’s football team.

The senior was by far the receiving leader for the Tartans with 1,586 yards and 20 touchdowns on 93 receptions. He also got some rushing touches.

He was a ball hawk in the secondary with five interceptions and 56 tackles.

He also put in 420 total yards on kickoff and punt returns and scored five nonoffensive touchdowns.

Cragun was named Academy League MVP and All-CIF in Division 7.

He will continue playing football at

Mej Carpentier shined indoors and outdoors for Saddleback Valley Christian.

In the fall, Carpentier was a valuable contributor all over the court to the Warriors volleyball team. She was all-league and won the CIF-SS championship.

In the winter, she was truly phenomenal for the Saddleback Valley Christian soccer team.

Carpentier was a goal machine with the No. 2 single-season total in CIF-SS history and the No. 2 scorer in the nation. Her career marks put her third all-time in CIF-SS history.

Carpentier will continue in the fall at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Lauren McCaffrey

SOCCER, ST. MARGARET’S

BASEBALL, CAPISTRANO VALLEY CHRISTIAN

Lauren McCaffrey was the engine that made St. Margaret’s girls soccer team go this season.

The senior led the Tartans in assists for a second straight season and led the team to an undefeated Academy League championship and the CIF-SS Division 4 semifinals.

McCaffrey’s four-year totals put her third all-time in St. Margaret’s history with 42 goals and 48 assists in her career.

She is a two-time Academy League MVP, two-time first-team All-CIF and was named the Academy League athlete of the year.

McCaffrey will continue playing soccer at Northwestern University in the fall.

FOOTBALL/BASKETBALL, SADDLEBACK VALLEY CHRISTIAN Jonah Tolmaire stood out double for the Warriors in his senior season.

In the fall, Tolmaire led Saddleback Valley Christian in rushing with 455 yards and four touchdowns on 56 carries. He earned first-team All-San Joaquin League honors.

In the winter, Tolmaire was a catalyst for an impressive run by the Warriors basketball team. He averaged a doubledouble with 13.4 points per game and 10.1 assists per game.

Tolmaire was in the county top-three for assists and steals and was named the San Joaquin League player of the

year.

He will continue in the fall at Vanguard University.

Alec Arnone drove the bus for the league champion Eagles.

In his senior season, Arnone was the offensive leader and a shutdown pitcher for CVC to be named the San Joaquin League player of the year.

Arnone led CVC with 37 hits, 41 RBIs and nine home runs with a .474 batting average.

He was second on the team in runs with 30 and third on the team in doubles with seven.

As a pitcher, Arnone crafted a 0.49 earned run average and led the Eagles with 42 strikeouts.

He will continue at the University of Cali-

As a senior, Riley Dungan played four sports and was also a cheerleader for the Eagles.

Dungan was all-league in soccer and softball, but her forte was on the softball diamond.

Dungan led the Eagles in batting average (.561), in hits (23), in RBI (19) and in home runs (two). She was also second in runs with 21 and stolen bases with 10.

She was the team’s starting pitcher with a 2.65 earned run average and 129 strikeouts to set the single-season and career school strikeout records.

Dungan will continue at Southern Utah
