CUSD Passes Gun Violence Resolution THE LATEST: The Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) passed a resolution to improve school safety and condemn gun violence at its meeting on Wednesday, April 25.

The resolution, which includes asking state and federal legislators to implement “common sense” gun measures, strengthen background checks and ban assault weapons, was brought to the board by Trustee Patricia Holloway. The resolution was passed 4-3.

“We cannot continue to allow gun violence to affect our schools and affect our students,” Holloway said.

Some 10 CUSD students, some of whom have participated in nationwide school walkouts related to gun violence, spoke on behalf of the resolution, sharing fears and frustrations of gun violence in nationwide schools.

“For as long as I can remember, each month is carried with a new tragedy as a direct result of gun violence. The headlines are forever burned in my mind,” San Juan Hills High School student Ava Bachelder said.

Terri Binaei, a mother of three sons who attended CUSD schools and is a part of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense, also spoke in support of the resolution.

Binaei said she got involved with gun violence prevention, after her son became a survivor of the 2014 University of California, Santa Barbara shooting.

“I am inspired by the students who are here this evening (in support of the resolution) and all of those who have been speaking the past few months, and leading our efforts to make our country less of a victim to violence,” Binaei said.

for California’s 49th Congressional district election answered several questions comprised by the public and several area chambers of commerce.

In attendance at the April 25 forum were 11 of the 16 candidates running in the district that stretches from Vista to San Juan Capistrano. The Republican candidates were Diane Harkey, Brian Maryott, Craig Nordal, Mike Schmitt and Joshua Schoonover.

Questions were presented to candidates in non-sequential order: one candidate would be asked about immigration, for example, and the next would be asked a question on a completely different issue.

All candidates received the same questions once it came to their turn.

The chambers’ forum featured only one question about business, asking candidates how they would improve commerce for Californians.

Tax-focused and on her home turf of Dana Point, Harkey, who currently sits on the state’s Board of Equalization, was the one dissenting Republican at the forum who said she didn’t agree with the Trump administration’s tax code reform.

Her local counterparts, Applegate of San Clemente and Levin of San Juan Capistrano said they would push for incentives for green and renewable energy that would cut costs for businesses, especially for corporate manufacturers who are some of the highest users of energy.

Maryott, a first-term City Council member in San Juan Capistrano, said he would work to expedite the process of getting tax bills passed and make them “permanent” without omnibus spending, the practice of attaching other legislation to bills in an effort to compromise and keep the United

States government funded.

By summer, it’ll be down to two candidates in California’s automatic runoff system following the June 5 primaries.

San Juan Capistrano City Council Adopts Climate Change Resolution THE LATEST: San Juan Capistrano City Council passed a resolution on Tuesday, April 17 that addresses climate change and states support in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The resolution supports findings that climate change is happening and that human activities are a key contributor to it and acknowledges that if left unaddressed, the consequences of climate change will adversely impact all Americans, the resolution states.

“The question is no longer whether climate change will affect our lives but rather how bad things will get and how soon it will happen. Avoiding the worst effects depends on how rapidly we can reduce the carbon pollution produced from the burning of coal, oil and gas,” said Larry Kramer, former mayor and member of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby.

THE LATEST: The petitions for the recall of San Juan Capistrano City Councilmembers Kerry Ferguson, Pam Patterson and Derek Reeve have been withdrawn, the city confirmed on Thursday, April 19.

Since late 2017 when petitions for recall began, a heated debate took center stage in San Juan Capistrano. With days left for signatures to be collected, the petitions for all three recalls fell short.

“The City Clerk’s office has confirmed that the recall efforts for Councilmember Ferguson, Councilmember Patterson and Councilmember Reeve have been withdrawn by the proponents for lack of sufficient signatures,” Assistant City Manager Jacob Green said.

Petitions to recall Ferguson and Reeve received approval from the City Clerk on Dec. 21, and the petitioners attempting to recall Pam Patterson received approval on Dec. 22. All three petitions focused heavily on development-related issues, the recall petitions for Reeve and Ferguson are directly related, using the same verbiage regarding the proposed River Street project on Los Rios Street.

The proponents had 120 days to collect the signatures of 20 percent of the city’s 19,227 registered voters—3,845 residents—for each petition. The recalls for Ferguson and Reeve had until Friday, April 20 to gather signatures and the recall for Patterson had until Monday, April 23.

WHAT’S NEXT: Reeve announced on Facebook on Monday, April 16 that he is running for reelection this November.

EYE ON SJC (Cont. from page 3) Wednesday, April 25 at Sycamore Trails Stables in San Juan Capistrano, since a two-week quarantine began on Friday, April 13 when a first horse tested positive and was placed in isolation.

Sycamore Trails Stables Manager Dave Provence confirmed on Monday, April 16 that one of its horses tested positive for EHV-1 and the stables will be in quarantine. The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) issued a statement on April 13 that a horse from an Orange County facility was isolated after testing positive for the virus. The CDFA statement has not included that Sycamore Trails Stables is the Orange County facility that is under quarantine.

“To date, there have been five confirmed febrile cases of EHV-1 and the one index case of (EHM) which remains isolated and quarantined off site,” a CDFA statement said on April 24.

A sign that read ‘Attention, No Horses May Leave This Facility’ was posted at the entrance of Sycamore Trails Stables, in addition to caution tape and ‘Under Quarantine, Stop, Disease Prevention Control Area’ signs posted across the Sycamore Barn of the stables. EHV-1 does not affect humans, but humans can carry the virus, Provence said.

EHV-1 in horses can cause respiratory disease, abortion in mares, neonatal foal death and neurological disease, according to the CDFA website. EHV-1 can be easily spread, so the CDFA recommends that horse owners limit horse-to-horse contact, horse-to-human-to-horse contact, avoid the use of communal water sources, avoid sharing equipment unless disinfected and to monitor horses for clinical signs of the disease, which includes a temperature of more than 102 degrees Fahrenheit.

A horse owner who has multiple horses stabled at Sycamore Trails Stables said that they are skeptical of the methods of the quarantine. The owner did not want to be named out of potential retaliation.

“I am definitely starting to have a serious concern as far as the way it’s handled and the way it’s spreading,” the owner said.

In total, there are approximately 420 horses lodged at Sycamore Trails Stables, Provence said.

Proposed Homeless Shelter in San Juan Capistrano

local nonprofit proposed several sites in San Juan Capistrano as homeless shelters during a tour of potential areas for shelters in other South Orange County cities on Tuesday, April 17. iHope, a nonprofit organization that provides services to help homeless people off the streets in South Orange County, invited members of the press to follow them on a short tour of locations that have been zoned to comply with Senate Bill 2 (SB 2), the California law requiring such city planning.

“We’re not interested in being an operator, our interest really is just information on getting a place for the homeless,” said Dennis Ettlin, vice president of iHope’s board. iHope reviewed locations in San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente and Dana Point.

None of the three cities where the sites are located were consulted in the development of the proposed locations, a press statement on Friday, April 20 from the city managers of Dana Point, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano said. iHope’s press release proposes up to 80 homeless people to be placed at the San Juan Capistrano Northwest Open Space with small sheds, which have been demonstrated across the state and nation, could be used to house the people who seek shelter.

The Northwest Open Space zoning is Community Park, which is intended to provide for major active recreation sites in accordance with the city’s General Plan.

However, accessory uses and structures incidental to the operation of permitted use, and caretaker residences (temporary and permanent), are accessory use permitted by right, according to the city’s Open Space municipal code.

Within the city’s Accessory Uses and Structures municipal code, standards for accessory dwelling units on lots intended for or already containing a legally-created single-family detached unit in all residential

districts where permitted are outlined. Said units are exempt from the calculation of General Plan density, according to the code.

The other site that iHope visited on April 17 was the old Endevco Corporation building, which appears abandoned with vines taking over its structure, on Rancho Viejo Road. iHope proposes that the Endevco site, which may be walking distance from the Northwest Open Space to some, could be used as a day area for homeless people to hang out and use services.

“The Endevco site is a zoned Industrial Park,” San Juan Capistrano Assistant City Manager Jacob Green said. “Support services are not identified as a permitted use, but could possibly be a site for an eating and drinking establishment which is permitted by right, or a ‘church, religious, or fraternal’ use which is permitted with a Conditional Use Permit.”

The only zone that permits Supportive Housing Facilities, including emergency shelters, by right in San Juan Capistrano is the Public and Institutional zone, Green said.

“To summarize, neither of the sites identified by iHope have the appropriate zoning for what they propose,” Green said. iHope argues that since the land is owned by the city, officials could initiate permits to allow usage for homeless shelters.

“Had we been consulted, we would have gladly shared that some of the sites iHope identified in San Juan Capistrano would require a General Plan Amendment to allow the proposed use, and that changing the General Plan for any land designated as ‘Open Space’ must be approved by a vote of the people,” San Juan Capistrano City Manager Ben Siegel said in the city managers’ statement.

There are more than 20 Public and Institutional zone areas in San Juan Capistrano, which range in size and facility, according to the city’s interactive map that includes zoning and land use. According to iHope,

there are two areas that are open parcels that could be used for homeless shelters.

The recently sold Women’s Club building is one marked in the Public and Institutional zone.

“While the (Women’s Club building) meets zoning constraints and could eventually provide day resources for the homeless, the neighbors would complain loudly,” the press release said. iHope didn’t go into detail on the other location, other than it is on Del Obispo Street and it would be “unsuited” for an emergency shelter, the press release said.

Many of these areas account for schools and churches, with many of the Public and Institutional zone areas clustered next to each other; including five of these zoned areas near the intersection of Junipero Serra Road and Camino Capistrano near JSerra Catholic High School.

The South Orange County Association of Mayors has proposed an emergency shelter site at a meeting on Thursday, April 19, in response to a request of U.S. District Judge David O. Carter.

“It was a very productive meeting with representatives from the entire South Orange County Service Planning Area (SPA) in attendance,” San Juan Capistrano Mayor Sergio Farias said. “Pursuant to Carter’s request, the mayors identified an emergency shelter site in the South County SPA; specifically, an 11-acre former school property on Santiago Canyon Road.”

The Orange County Board of Supervisors rejected the idea late Tuesday, April 24 after a closed-session meeting.

“I understand the urgency to house the homeless, but placing them in a brand new $6.8-million project built for families perhaps is not the answer,” said Supervisor Todd Spitzer, who represents the district where the shelter would have been located, in a statement on April 20. “Any place that has ‘Baby & Me Storytime’ should not be under consideration. In addition, the state has designated this area a ‘Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone.’”

Southern Orange County cities have been criticized by northern cities as not doing their diligence in providing adequate space and resources for a homeless shelter. The cities of Irvine, Laguna Niguel and Huntington Beach pushed back against the supervisors after it was suggested to put tent encampments on county-owned land within the cities.

“In the city of San Juan Capistrano, we have established and successful Affordable Rental Housing Programs that create support networks and services for those that need short-term housing assistance, and we have a long track record of working collaboratively with local nonprofits and law enforcement experts to address the challenges municipalities face as the homeless population grows,” Farias said.

Crack in the Creek New data shows high bacteria, pollution levels in San Juan Creek

H

igh bacteria levels in samplings of San Juan Creek during wet weather exceeds regulation standards, in one sample by almost 7,000 percent, which is closer to the levels of untreated raw sewage, new data reveals.

Amidst a lawsuit filed by Orange County Coastkeeper that claims the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park contributes to pollution in San Juan Creek, against the city of San Juan Capistrano, which owns the Riding Park’s land, and Blenheim Facility Management (BFM), which operates the Riding Park’s facilities—new data has shown high bacteria levels in a San Juan Creek water sample during wet weather. The data, collected and analyzed

by Sierra Analytical Laboratories—a state certified lab in Laguna Hills—shows an exceedance of fecal coliform and enterococci levels from the San Diego Water Board’s targets for wet weather.

“These are the highest numbers I’ve ever seen that aren’t from a composting or trash facility,” Orange County Coastkeeper Senior Staff Attorney Colin Kelly said.

The San Diego Water Board Basin Plan, which bases its bacterial targets by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines, holds San Juan Creek to a wet weather numeric target for enterococcus of 104 Most Probable Number (MPN) per 100 milliliters, with a 22 percent allowable exceedance frequency.

by Sierra Analytical on Jan. 9, one sampling shows enterococcus levels of 700,000 Colony-Forming Units (CFU) per 100 milliliters. Enterococci are bacteria found in human animal feces and can cause human and animal infections, according to the American Society for Microbiology.

“It definitely indicates some pollution in the water, that is why there are high numbers,” San Diego Water Board Water Resource Engineer Helen Yu said. “They are also close to the untreated sewage level, the lower level of untreated sewage.”

Roger Mitchell, engineering geologist at the San Diego Water Board who oversees the San Juan Capistrano region, said that although the city is tasked with monitoring discharges with San Juan Creek, the board has been monitoring it as well.

“The water board is aware of ongoing litigation between the city (of San Juan Capistrano) and Orange County Coastkeeper,” Mitchell said. “As far as the WaThe Capistrano Dispatch April 27–May 10, 2018

ter Board’s involvement, we’ve been out to the site, performed some inspections and found there were some deficiencies in terms of compliance with federal and state laws. Beyond that, the Water Board has not been closely involved with the litigation, we’re aware of it but we’re not a party to it.”

At the San Juan Creek Ocean Interface, where San Juan Creek meets Doheny Beach, Heal the Bay’s Beach Report Card gives an ‘F’ grade for wet weather and a ‘D’ grade for dry weather.

The grades are based on a 30-day period ending on April 3, according to the Beach Report Card website.

“Even if there are lower numbers, such as 15,000 or 20,000 CFU, that is way above the allowable numbers (of 104 MPN),” Yu said, adding that CFU and MPN are interchangeable methods of measurement.

Yu said that these numbers “raise concern,” however, normally when samplings are collected during a rain event, there is a high concentration of bacteria as a sort of “first flash” on the surface.

Then, they flush out and you’ll see lower concentrations, she said.

In the Jan. 9 data, four other samplings are recorded with lower levels of enterococcus. They range from 11,000 to 22,000 CFU per 100 milliliters.

“It’s a snapshot and doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a long term issue,” said Michelle Santillan, a water resource control engineer at the San Diego Water Board.

However, these numbers raise the possibility of people getting sick, Yu said.

“Bacteria themselves, especially enterococcus, they themselves don’t make people sick,” Yu said. “It is the pathogens associated with them in sewage that makes them sick.”

Sometimes, Yu added, concentrations can come from wildlife, such as seagulls.

However, the 22 percent exceedance for the Basin Plan Wet Weather Numeric Targets would typically allow for variables such as wildlife, she said.

One of Orange County Coastkeeper’s claims in the lawsuit is that during wet weather, runoff of horse feces drains to San Juan Creek from the Riding Park.

One of the main concerns, Kelly said, is that there are wash racks for the horses that directly drain into the Creek.

“I would like to check if there’s any Page 7

onsite treatment facilities, if there are I would suppose they are doing a better job than to send this high concentration to the beach,” Yu said. “If they’re not, they should do a better job in installing, maintaining and operating the onsite treatment facility.”

The Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park at San Juan Capistrano enrolled in a water quality permit issued by the State Water Resources Control Board. The permit requires water quality sampling from overland flows produced as a result of rainfall, San Juan Capistrano Assistant City Manager Jacob Green said.

“The sample results help to inform the facility operator (BFM) as to which areas of the property may need adjustment,” Green said. “The state’s permit allows for the facility to operate in an iterative manner (to adjust, modify and adapt the necessary water quality controls).”

Green said monitoring is necessary to make modifications and achieve compliance.

“A single set of results above the action levels does not mean the property is out of compliance or not complying with the permit, it simply communicates to the facility operator that adjustments should be made,” Green said.

Data collected from Feb. 27 also shows enterococcus numbers higher than the 104 MPN standard, with three samples ranging from 900 to 24,000 CFU. Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park is a 40-acre facility that is home to many equestrian events. Orange County Coastkeeper filed the lawsuit, which alleges Clean Water Act violations, against the city and BFM on June 2, 2017.

Red Cross Encourages Blood Donation This May The American Red Cross is calling for donors in May to give blood and platelets regularly to be prepared to meet the needs of patients in emergency situa-

tions. Trauma accounts for approximately 41 million emergency department visits and 2 million hospital admissions each year, according to the National Trauma Institute.

“In trauma situations, when there’s no time to check a patient’s blood type, emergency personnel reach for type O negative red blood cells and type AB plasma because they can be transfused to any patient, regardless of blood type,” an American Red Cross press release said.

“Less than 7 percent of the population has type O negative blood, and only about 4 percent of the population has type AB blood.”

The Mainstream Effect on Sexual Violence

A

s a 16-year-old girl, I’ve been raised with the idea to cover up: to feel flattered when receiving unwanted attention from boys, to constantly listen to not-so-subtle jokes normalizing misogyny and sexual assault (think “boys will be boys!”), etc.

I could, quite literally, go on for hours.

However, in the span of only a few months, I have noticed a shift in not only the way women demand to be treated with the same respect as their male counterparts, but also the mainstream attention garnered toward raising awareness for rape culture and sexual assault. Just last year, the #MeToo movement, founded

by Tarana Burke, sparked a campaign to rally behind women, more specifically of “young women of color from low wealth communities” who have dealt with sexual assault in an effort to “de-stigmatize survivors by highlighting the breadth and impact sexual violence has on thousands,” according to the Me Too Movement’s website. In addition, the Times Up organization founded in 2018 was created by celebrities in wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal to protect women and prevent sexual assault in the workplace, according to www.timesupnow.com.

If we continue to treat “sexual assault like the plague and refuse to talk about it in classroom settings—then young, vulnerable girls will lose their voice in this fight to end sexual violence.

The fact that both of these organizations have recently made international headlines is a testament of a new age upon us; where sexual harassment is addressed with seriousness and understanding that is long overdue. And, where women are unafraid to speak up about the injustices and pressures they have faced in their lives, with encouragement and solidarity.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, coordinated by the National Sexual Page 9

Violence Resource Center, to raise awareness about sexual violence and educate people on preventing it.

Although there has been so much progress in the past few years, there is still so much to be done to prevent events like this from being commonplace. We need to focus on properly teaching consent and de-stigmatizing sexual harassment at younger ages because “females ages 16-19 are four times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault,” according to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network.

Teenagers can easily stay quiet if assaulted because it can seem embarrassing, shameful, and often times they are also blamed for someone else’s actions. If we continue to treat sexual assault like the plague and refuse to talk about it in classroom settings—then young, vulnerable girls will lose their voice in this fight to end sexual violence.

We need to teach young girls that their voices are heard and they are valuable. It is their words and experiences that will shape the war against rape culture and harassment. What they have dealt with their whole lives will not be continued, in fact, it will be obliterated. They will not carry the guilt of something they had no control

over. They will speak out in spite of being attacked and accused of lying.

Although sexual assault awareness and prevention is brought to the forefront in April specifically, we should continue fighting for this in May, in June and in other months or years to come; as long it takes to end sexual violence.

As the vast majority of the nerves from the stomach go to the brain, the mix and diversity of the bacteria in our gut can greatly influence its power. Therefore, the more diverse the bacteria in our gut, otherwise known as microbiome, the healthier the person typically is, according to Why Isn’t My Brain Working? by Dr. Datis Kharrazian.

Unfortunately, people in the United States have some of the lowest rates of gut microbiome. Low diversity in gut bacteria have been correlated with obesity, heart disease, immune dysfunction and neurological diseases. Therefore, gut health is one of the most important areas of the body to focus on healing since it has a direct correlation to the brain and all bodily functions.

A typical patient question I hear is, ‘why is my gut more sensitive than the guy sitting next to me, consistently eating plates of greasy nachos with beers, feeling ust fine ’ Gut symptoms can take a while to develop, as it starts with our genetic profile, but is eventually influenced by many lifestyle choices including, but not limited to: lifetime stresses, injuries, drug exposure, surgery, diet, other diseases, even how you were delivered and whether or not one was breast fed. These all affect the microbiome in the gut. Therefore, it is not practical to compare yourself to the nacho and beer guy.

Simply put, the human digestive tract starts from the mouth to the stomach where acids break down food, sending it to the small intestine, which introduces nutrients to the blood stream followed by the large intestine; which forms unwanted waste.

Severe chronic abdominal pain, excess gas, inability to digest foods, yeast overgrowth and brain fog are some of the most common symptoms associated with gut problems, from “The Neuroendocrine Immunology of Mucosal Activity” lecture by Kharrazian. The digestive tract at this point tends to be unable to release enzymes to break down our food that we need to absorb for fuel.

Proper bowel movements and a healthy communication of the nervous and endocrine system are affected. The longer these symptoms are untreated, the more severe the destruction is in the lining of the gut with the potential of triggering a permanent autoimmune disease.

The ‘pro’ in probiotics I have many patients that come in with gut symptoms

and are taking a general probiotic. The initial drawback is that one size does not fit all. There are different types of probiotics for different gut problems. For example, we would administer different probiotic strains for someone who is suffering from small intestine bacteria overgrowth, versus someone who has leaky gut disease in the large intestine, according to “The Neuroendocrine Immunology of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth” by Kharrazian.

There are different strands for different gut conditions.

Some conditions even call for probiotic enemas or fecal transplants—yes, it might sound crazy, but this is happening. It is important to first establish a proper diagnosis before deciding on the appropriate protocol.

Other potential natural solutions overlooked prior to adding a probiotic into a regular health routine include: • Using an appropriate supplement for a short period of time that helps kill the overgrowth of bad bacteria.

• Eliminating sugars from the diet altogether, as sugar feeds bad bacteria. Follow a low sugar, low carb diet high in healthy fats.

• Eating fermented foods that help with digestion or consider digestive enzymes.

• Ingest L glutamine, collagen, bone broth, short chain fatty acids, butyric acid and medium-chain triglycerides oil all heal the lining of the gut and increase the gut microbiome and absorption.

• Finding tools to help you increase sleep, exercise and sweat while decreasing stress.

• Do an annual gastrointestinal cleanse to give your gut a break. A cleanse should address food changes with supplements to help maximize the results with agents that help kill bad bacteria and replenish good bacteria.

• Limit antibiotics, if needed, use a probiotics after consumption.

• Eat as many diverse kinds of plant foods that you can tolerate. Don’t be a creature of habit go to the farmers’ market each week, find that plant that you don’t know about, then buy it and cook it.

There are many possible solutions to initially fixing the gut. Probiotics serve a useful and beneficial purpose, especially when maximized with the proper diagnosis. Diversifying gut bacteria will promote a happy and vital gut life.

Nature therapy Scientists have long known that sunlight and walking outside reduces depression. According to WebMD, as little as five minutes in a natural setting, whether gardening or moving around outside, improves mood, self-esteem and motivation.

If you spend a lot of time indoors, due to long working hours or weather conditions, poor air quality is bound to affect your health. In fact, indoor toxins can have a detrimental effect on health. Plants will provide better sleep by adding more oxygen to the room, according to Horticulture and Landscape Design Professor Ken Lee of Saddleback College.

“Indoor plants provide air filtering functions by increasing oxygen levels, and at the same time, remove volatile organic

compounds and other harmful chemicals from the air, promoting better rest,” said Lee. The top air-improving plant is aloe vera. It’s easy to grow and maintain and emits oxygen at night. It’s also a great option for those looking for a low maintenance plant, as it requires minimum water and attention. In fact, the Egyptians nicknamed it the ‘plant of immortality’ because of its resilience.

The second top air-improving plant is the spider plant. NASA tests indicate this champion cleanser removes up to 90 percent of the cancer-causing chemical formaldehyde from the air.

Here are a few other plants that will help promote health in the home: Peace Lily: Its flowers give off humidity and suppress airborne microbes; however, keep it away from children and pets since it is highly toxic if consumed.

Lavender: Known for its relaxant properties, lavender reduces insomnia, restlessness, lowers heart rate and calms agitated babies.

EASTERN HEALING Traditional Chinese medicine is a more natural approach to pain, anxiety, stress relief

BY DANIEL RITZ t has taken decades for acupuncture, formally known as traditional Chinese medicine, to be integrated into Western culture since international relations with China have opened up in the 1970s.

“We let the body heal itself,” explains Mike Hsu, acupuncturist and co-founder of Pacific Acupuncture Center in Dana Point.

Hsu and Mia Chou, fellow acupuncture practitioner and co-founder, opened Pacific Acupuncture Center in 2013 with the goal of integrating traditional Chinese medicine into Western culture. “(I started doing acupuncture) after I had taken time off after studying biochemistry,” Chou said, reflecting on her post-graduate studies where she met Hsu. “I was uneasy about the long-term effects of all of these drugs, all of the pills; we just didn’t know the permanent impacts. We still don’t. These powerful, and addictive drugs have not been around long enough to know the long-term impacts on our health.”

For decades, traditional Chinese medicine has been largely recognized by needle acupuncture, where needle points of varying thicknesses, plugged into the skin, trigger nerves below the skin to open up damaged or blocked neurochemical and hormone passages.

Traditionally, Chinese acupuncturists believe that disease and pain is caused by a disruption of energy throughout the body, called qi. Recent fMRI studies, such as those conducted by the Neuroscience Research Institute, have validated this belief by tracing brain activity to stimulation of specific acupuncture points.

Chou and Hsu said the variety of traditional Chinese medicines reflect the variety of symptoms they can be utilized for, often assisting in preventing problems before they reach the necessity for Western invasive or synthetic medicines.

“Most of the time,” Hsu interjected. “We can help prevent symptoms like physical pain from reaching the levels where our patients need to come in (for treatment).”

According to Hsu and Chou, traditional Chinese medicine is a resource for those seeking relief from not only physical pain, but emotional and mental health barriers as well such as infertility, anxiety, stress, posttraumatic stress disorder and depression.

Hsu said the integration of traditional Chinese medicine into Western medicine is exactly that— an integration and not a switch.

“It isn’t a ‘this or that’ situation,” Hsu said. “Sometimes, Western medicine is appropriate, when something is structurally wrong within your body, you will need to go to the emergency room. We are looking to possibly lessen the frequencies of large-scale events, as best we can, before they get to traumatic levels.”

“We practice healthcare, not just ‘illness prevention,’” Chou said.

INNER PEACE Clear your mind from distraction, and more, through floating

BY DANIEL RITZ riginally used to test the effects of complete sensory deprivation in the 1950s, floating via modern float tanks is becoming a popular physical and mental health practice for South Orange County residents.

“Floating” is the act of floating in a pool, or pod, of body-temperature water and Epsom salts in a room of equal temperature. Epsom salt-infused water provides adequate floatation.

Once inside the pool, or pod, a user is met with a variety of options. Some users will choose to go the way of complete sensory deprivation by turning off the lights, soundproofing the pod and eliminating all external sensory input. This assists the user in achieving a completely internal experience, alone with their thoughts and without the possibility of external distraction. Many practitioners describe this as rapid encouragement to reaching a meditative state.

Justin Feinstein, director of the LIBR Float Clinic & Research Center, the principal investigator at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research and an assistant professor at the University of Tulsa, believes floating could be a shortcut for many people to reach a meditative state and reap some of its proven benefits.

“Floating gives me hope that a whole chunk of our population that normally would never be able to meditate could now achieve those sorts of deep meditative states,” Feinstein said.

and by comparing the two images, can see how floating changes areas of activation in the brain.

Recent advances in neuroscience have allowed science to look inside the human brain during practices like meditation and see how brain activity changes. Research from fMRI studies done by Harvard Medical School, affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital, show that meditating activates parts of the brain associated with attention and decreases activation in the amygdala.

Acceptance by the medical establishment of these demonstrations and their proven benefits have followed after studies supported by the National Institute of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, found links between meditation and reducing anxiety

and hostility, reducing stress and assisting in relationship development.

Others, commonly beginner “floaters” or those looking for the more physical benefits, choose to have a more sensory “isolation” experience as compared to deprivation.

A NEEDLE IN THE HAYSTACK Amid the industry boom, finding the right yoga teacher is paramount

BY DANIEL RITZ s practicing any one of the many varieties of yoga now available in South Orange County becomes an easily accessible option for physical, mental and spiritual wellness, both first-time and experienced yogis alike are faced with the choice of how to safely and effectively choose from a rapidly growing sea of new yoga instructors, and identify a teacher that is right for their desired experience.

The 2016 “Yoga in America” study, conducted by Yoga Journal and Yoga Alliance, revealed the number of yoga practitioners in the United States increased to more than 36 million in 2016, up from 20.4 million in 2012. 34 percent of Americans say they are at least somewhat likely to practice yoga in the next 12 months, or more than 80 million Americans, an ironic fact considering that 74 percent of American practitioners have been practicing for less than five years.

That same study revealed that for every teacher, there were two people in teacher training. Many yoga studios have opened yoga training courses, most South Orange County studios often charging more than $2,500 for base-level certification.

“Just like there are a lot of yoga teachers, we see many real estate agents because there is a lower cost of entry for those professions,” said Brette Popper, founder of YogaCity NYC. “And we often think of real estate agents as sleazy.”

“Every studio is struggling,” said Kristen Dollard, brand director at Yoga Journal, who explained that Yoga Journal tries to meet clients where they’re at. “We’re all wondering how we can make a profit. I think the fact that so many people are doing yoga, every organization has to become a startup, whether you’re a festival or a retailer.”

To make money, many yoga studios have turned into teacher training “certificate printing mills,” said Popper. Thousands of graduates are able to recite scripts and routines instead of providing insightful instruction. Unlike physical therapy or engineering, which require years of schooling, being a yoga teacher may in some cases be as easy as turning on an iPad. Finding the correct (and most qualified) yoga teacher means avoiding a potentially painful injury, wasting money on programming not suited for their desires and encouraging a long-term relationship with their practice. According to information

from Yoga Alliance, Mind Body Green and the New York Times, here are a few considerations when selecting a yoga instructor.

1. What was the first impression?

“In all yoga traditions, there is the idea of a guru,” Popper said. “The point of that relationship is that two spirits see each other. Your teacher really needs to recognize you.” If there are doubts about a teacher right away upon meeting them, those instincts should be trusted.

2. Do they teach what the yogi wants to learn? If the teacher isn’t including elements the yogi is looking for in a class or instructor, he or she isn’t the right instructor. A best friend may be the best person in the world, but if they teach a vigorous hot yoga class and the yogi is interested in a relaxing restorative class, they may not be the right instructor. If philosophy and chanting in Sanskrit is important to the yogi but the instructor incorporates a 60-minute asana class (or posture-oriented yoga) only, it might be best to consider finding someone else to study with.

3. Is the yoga teacher approachable?

It’s important to find a teacher who is approachable and easy to talk to about questions. A teacher who shows up early

to class, takes the time to greet his or her students and stays a few minutes after class shows that he or she cares about the students and is available to help.

4. What does the teacher’s yoga education consist of? Don’t be afraid to ask the teacher where they studied and with whom. Find out what kind of training he or she went through and if they continue to study with their own teachers. Yoga is a continuous practice; because of that, it is important that the teacher continues to study and learn while their students learn from them.

5. Is the teacher recognized by Yoga Alliance? If studying with a Registered Yoga Teacher is an important quality to have in a yoga instructor in the student’s eyes, visit the Yoga Alliance Directory at www.yogaalliance.org/directory to see if they are listed. If not, students can ask if their instructor studied at the Registered Yoga School or if it was a personal choice not to register.

With scientific data like that of Harvard University Medical School showing the positive physical impacts of yoga to compliment the spiritual or metaphysical components of health, due diligence is in order when beginning, or expanding yoga practice, and finding the right teacher.

Many of my clients are completely unaware that their environment at work is a contributing factor to their pain, fatigue, mood-swings, weight gain and digestive complaints. With so much chronic disease nowadays, we need to have strategies for staying as healthy as possible. Here are some workplace hacks that you can implement to make your work environment more conducive to optimal health.

Supplement with vitamin D One of the most important things you’re missing if you work inside is sunlight.

Without adequate sunlight everyday you won’t be able to make enough vitamin D to keep you healthy. itamin D deficiencies are extremely common and can result in increased back pain, more colds and flus, higher risk of diabetes and even cancer. If you aren’t able to spend 20-30 minutes per day in direct sunlight then you must get your vitamin D from food or from supplements. Good sources of vitamin D include fatty fish, butter from grass-fed cows, and egg yolks. The best source to supplement with is vitamin D3 at 1,000-3,000IU/day depending on your blood levels. Your vitamin D should be between 39-70 ng/ML. Move around Most Americans sit between 8-12 hours each day. That means that nearly half of one’s entire working years could be spent sitting down. When you sit too much you are more likely to experience back pain, to acquire hypertension and high cholesterol, to gain more belly fat, and to be at greater risk of cardiovascular disease. In fact, sitting has been called the new smoking because studies show a strong connection between the time you spend sitting and your risk of having a heart attack.

Instead, move around the office as much as you can. Set a timer to remind you to get up every 20 minutes. Get outside and take a walk on your lunch break. Consider using a standing desk. Use every opportunity to move your body.

Cut out the snacks Snacks are everywhere in offices Snacking frequently during the day can lead to elevated levels of our hunger hormones insulin and ghrelin. When these hormones get too high, the result is insulin resistance (pre-diabetes), constant hunger and the inability to lose weight. Get good sleep Waking up refreshed and strong in the morning will help prevent binging on the wrong foods and increase your productivity while you’re at work. fter years of San Juan Capistrano’s beloved Chili Cook Off event being absent, the savory, taste-bud craving event is making a comeback on Saturday, May 5.

The 2018 Swallow’s Inn Chili Cook Off is presented by the Swallow’s Inn and the San Juan Capistrano Equestrian Coalition (SJCEC), with a mix of old and new coming to the event. One of the biggest changes is that this year’s Chili Cook Off will be more of a family-friendly event than previously; but most of the same elements will be there.

“It’s held outside and kind of like a festival atmosphere; there will be booths, music playing, vendors selling items, chili tastings and a beer truck,” said Susan Gregory, co-chair of the Chili Cook Off. “We’re trying to make it family friendly so all ages are welcome; people can dance and we have two bands playing.”

The newest edition to the event is the SJCEC involvement.

“The newest thing is the (SJCEC), so we’ll bring a little bit different feeling with the equestrian community,” Gregory said.

This will be Gregory’s first time organizing the event, but she does remember the Cook Off from before.

“I used to go every year, it was always a big event so we anticipate it being very popular again,” she said. “It’s a day of family fun with good food, good music and a great location.”

some rules that will need to be followed for competitors in the chili contests to go onto final rounds, Gregory added.

“We have a whole set of rules to follow such as the size of the tasting cups, how the judges score; it’s all pretty involved,” she said.

The chili contest categories will feature: red, homestyle, verde and people’s choice.

Some local community organizations will be competing, including the local Rotary Club, individual citizens and people from all over, Gregory said.

“Be ready to taste some awesome chili because it’s very serious, some people take it pretty seriously. They’re hoping to win and move on (to other competi-

tions),” she added.

The last day to enter into the competition is Thursday, May 3. Interested chefs can enter by emailing Gregory at susangregory1252@gmail.com.

In addition to chili tasting, there will also be a beer truck, live music by Family Style & Jann Browne, opportunity drawings and other vendors. Gregory estimates 3,000 will attend, compared to some 5,000 in previous years.

t feels crazy to associate someone as iconic and regarded as Hedy Lamarr with the word “underrated,” but she has been in many ways. For decades, film fans have viewed her as one of the most beautiful and glamorous movie stars in Hollywood history— which she is, naturally. But at home, she was also very creative and interested in science through inventions.

Alexandra Dean’s recent documentary Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story sheds some light on the remarkable history and life of the film legend.

Born as Hedwig Kiesler in Vienna, Austria, Hedy spent her teens and early 20s acting in local Austrian films, most infamously the softcore-dirty flick Ecstasy (1933). By the time she was 23, L.B Mayer got her a contract with MGM, changed her name to Hedy Lamarr and had her first Hollywood role in Algiers (1938) to positive reception. Her hit films in the 1940s would include Boom Town (1940) and Ziegfeld Girl (1941).

Out of the limelight, Hedy spent most of her time inventing things like her own carbonated drink and, most notably, a frequency-hopping signal.

Dean’s documentary fortunately features a lot of commentary by Lamarr’s own children and friends, as well as noted historians like Peter Bogdanovich and Robert Osborne. Bombshell not only covers the good parts of her career, like her fascinating fling with Howard Hughes or how her frequency invention paved the way for modern WiFi, but also her unhappy marriages and unfortunate methamphetamine addiction. Bombshell will hopefully not only be seen as a love letter to its subject, but also help keep Lamarr’s legacy as an inventor alive. CD

rowing up in San Juan Capistrano, Freddy Carrillo’s young life was captivated by surf and skate.

San Juan Creek was Carrillo’s primary commute, making it easy to skateboard to Doheny State Beach with surfboard in tow. Then, a car accident in his teens left him paralyzed.

“After the accident, punk music saved me,” Carrillo said.

Keeping busy with surf magazines and punk music, Carrillo’s motivation to try surfing and skateboarding came back upon reading “Board Beyond Belief,” an

History of El Adobe de Capistrano

F

irst opened in 1948, one of the most iconic restaurants in Orange County is El Adobe de Capistrano. For generations, visitors and residents have enjoyed family meals, shared drinks with friends and celebrated special occasions in an atmosphere filled with warmth and imbued with history.

However, in 1957, San Juan Capistrano almost lost the beloved landmark when a fire raged through the building, gutting the kitchen and roof, causing significant damage to the rear of the structure. Onlookers feared for the worst as smoke engulfed the restaurant, obscuring the famous El Adobe sign as dark clouds swirled around the outer walls and billowed through the charred roof. article published in 1993 in an issue of Transworld Magazine called blast!, that featured five athletes that covered snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing all in one day.

“That was it. Freddy decided he would do the same thing one day. Somehow. Yet, he had never skied or snowboarded before his accident,” a press release said.

Upon Carrillo’s determination to snowboard, skate and surf in one day, San Clemente-based writer and filmmaker

turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The historic building was not only repaired, but many improvements were made, including a bigger and better kitchen.

More than a decade later, President Richard Nixon purchased what became known as the Western White House. He brought a large party to El Adobe looking for a Mexican meal. The menu did not include Mexican fare, but since you don’t turn away the President of the United States, food was brought in and the evening was a success.

The story of the El Adobe is nearly as long as the town itself. The property has served as a residential home, a trading post, a stagecoach stop, a post office and what is now the wine cellar was the town’s jail. Today, you can order the “President’s

Maggie Franks caught wind of his venture and worked to create Freddy Carrillo’s Day Off, a documentary about Carrillo’s venture. So, in one day of action-shot filming, Franks and Carrillo planned the day out: surf in the morning, skateboard in midday and surf in the evening.

“Why not?” Carrillo, now in his mid40s, said. “How many people can say they skied, skated and surfed—all in one day.”

Franks said she was amazed at the response from other people within the

snowboard, skateboard and surf communities. During the filming, people would drop what they were doing and watch Carrillo make his moves.

“That’s the comradery that these sports have, especially for these wheelchair athletes,” Franks said. “Freddy is pretty fearless. He’s pretty well known on Bear Mountain (in Big Bear), so we did that shot and he dazzled everyone on the aerials that he gets.”

Carrillo blew kids away at a skate park as well, Franks said.

“Freddy just rolls over and drops right into the skate park,” Franks recalled.

“With Freddy, the thing that’s interesting, is if he doesn’t get it right it could be dangerous. But he was a skateboarder before (the accident) and he just adapted to that format; it was impressive to see these kids stand back and watch Freddy.”

The outdoor-sports trifecta ends with Carillo’s evening surfing session at San Onofre State Beach.

“It took us less than 12 hours from start to finish (to film the action shots), and he’s the first wheelchair athlete to ever do it that we know of,” Franks said. “People don’t understand Paralympics, it’s amazing what they can do – it’s a testimony to that.”

Friend of 30 Years Ties the Knot in Greek Wedding

I

n the summer of 1988 while surfing at Doheny State Beach, I met a guy named Alex Rentziperis.

Between waves as we chatted, I asked, “What kind of work do you do?”

Alex said, “I’m a barber. And, in a few months, I’m going to open my own barbershop not too far from here in Dana Point.

How about you?”

I said, “I’m going to open my own deli, also not too far from here in Dana Point.”

That was the start of a friendship that has lasted for 30 years. Later that year, Alex opened the Sports Barber at the corner of Del Prado and Golden Lantern, above where StillWater Spirits & Sounds restaurant is now located.

In December 1988, I opened Tutor and Spunky’s Deli on Pacific Coast Highway, next to the Dana Point Donut Shop across from Rubens Imports.

Since 1988, we’ve done a lot together.

Most notably, after my divorce in 1994 and after putting up with some unsavory roommates, I finally was going to get to live alone in my Monarch Beach home. That was before the phone rang.

It was Alex calling from ON LIFE AND his San Juan Capistrano LOVE AFTER 50 home.

Got a spare bedroom for a short time?”

So, Alex moved in. Turned out to last for about a year. He often repeated vehemently that he would never marry again.

We took many camping trips to the Sierras together. I can still picture him standing on a huge rock, trying to master fly-fishing, casting into the icy waters of Lake Mary. He got a little too far forward on one cast and did a belly flop right into the lake. I told him he’d never make the Olympic team as a diver.

Alex’s passion is ocean fishing. He has a boat and is out on the water once or twice a week. He taught me how to catch sea bass near the kelp beds. He’s featured on the cover of Western Outdoor News, the largest weekly fishing and hunting magazine in the country.

Four years ago, Alex attended an age 55plus singles meet-and-greet event at Tutor and Spunky’s Deli. Alex’s sister, Faye Dalton, encouraged a recently divorced client of hers named Carolyn Young to attend the same event to meet her brother. I remember that night. Carolyn and Alex seemed enamored with each other. They’ve been a couple ever since.

Carolyn were married in the backyard of Faye and Doug Dalton’s San Clemente home. Mark Rentziperis, Alex’s brother, was the best man.

Christine DiGiacomo, a San Clemente resident, whose business card reads, “Pastor Woman…for such a time as this,” (www. pastorwoman.com), married Alex and Carolyn. Christine and Carolyn have known each other for years. I heard many of the guests compliment Christine on the beautiful, unique ceremony she performed.

My partner Greta said, “This is the finest wedding I’ve ever attended.”

To conclude the ceremony, Pastor DiGiacomo added an unusual touch: Instead of the traditional “You may kiss the bride,” she turned to Carolyn and said, “You may kiss your new husband.” Very cool.

Alex still owns and works at the Sports Barber. Carolyn works at a local bank.

They live in Dana Point. Good to see an age 55-plus wedding so hip and fun.

Goes to show. Even though you’re over age 55, you never know when or where love might come along; it might even happen at a singles function at your local deli.

Brick by Brick San Juan Capistrano Historical Society volunteers restore, save Silva Adobe

O

n a lazy afternoon on Los Rios Street, people stroll along the mom-and-pop shops and historic structures of one of California’s oldest residential streets.

Tourists and locals alike leisurely admire historic San Juan Capistrano, but there’s a faint sound of tools at work upon walking past the Silva Adobe. Still wrapped by chain-link fence and boards, the Silva Adobe’s roof timidly pops above visual blockades, but not for long.

After nearly five years of volunteer restoration efforts, the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society will be unveiling the Silva Adobe for the first time to the public at Fiesta Days from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday, April 29.

Upon walking into the historic building, it’s surprisingly cool and breezy. Birds chirp in nearby trees, and the ground shakes in the adobe as a train rolls by.

has been working on the project. Gates has been working on it since day one, nearly five years ago, and is a Historical Society board member who was born and raised in San Juan Capistrano.

The Dispatch asked Gates how the restoration went, and what people can look forward to: The Capistrano Dispatch: What’s the history of the Silva Adobe?

Scott Gates: We believe it was built sometime in the 1780s. There used to be around 70 adobes on Los Rios Street, but now there are only three or four left. The adobes were housing workers when they were building the mission, which was finished in 1794.

What inspired the Historical Society to

restore the Silva Adobe?

Well, we were initially told it was a teardown. The ceiling was almost 6-inches shorter on one side than the other; the sand layer under the building twisted it.

With the San Juan Creek here, everything sort of pulls toward the creek due to the weather. So, we just built (the adobe) stronger.

How many resources did the Historical Society save by using volunteers to restore the Silva Adobe?

Probably around $50,000-$60,000, all of the funds went to the materials. There will be a paper drafted so that other nonprofits won’t have to hire high-tech contractors to come out for ungodly amounts of money to do it; it shows how to do it yourself. It

just takes time and patience. We have a background in construction, but this is kind of new to us. This was my first time with adobe. You know how to plaster, some of the basics, but (in this process) you learn how it actually all works. I probably spend about 20 hours per week doing the work, but I enjoy it.

How is the adobe different from before?

We had to implement air conditioning to preserve artifacts that will be in here.

There was a poured concrete porch, but we tore it down, made the porch from wood, and built an (American Disabilities Act) compliant ramp. However, we did as much as we could trying to perfectly preserve it. For example, we did save some concrete—one of the concrete steps up to the porch—that includes a written signature of a former resident.

In what ways did you preserve the original structure?

In adobe, you can re-use the materials including the bricks (made of sand, silt and clay). It’s like a plaster, you smear it on the outside and that’s what makes all of this smooth. Also, we saved many of the original walls and the ceilings; but also used the original floor as a third wall, but kept the original ceiling. The only thing that’s new is the floor.

What should people keep in mind when looking at the Silva Adobe?

Basically we’ve re-engineered it, so we’ve saved it. We actually dug underneath the walls and we put a foundation like we would today; using the techniques and materials they would have used back then. CD www.thecapistranodispatch.com

James Paul Valgean III September 17, 1955 - April 10 2018 It is with great sadness and a heavy heart we announce that James Paul Valgean III of San Juan Capistrano, CA. passed away on April 10th, 2018 at the age of 62.

Born in Yonkers, New York, James moved to California during his days in the United States Air Force. After his honorable discharge, James eventually settled permanently in Southern California making a career in the energy auditing business.

In recent years, enjoying semi-retirement, James started a honey and avocado oil business and was a favorite at local farmers markets.

James had many interests, ranging from golf to football, from BBQ to fine dining, from music to dancing. He had a passion for serving the community, and was always willing and able to help, regardless of the duties. One of his trademark phrases was “I’m happy to be of service.”

His volunteer activities included supporting the Scottish Knights Templar’s, various church events and the San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Association. In 2018, James took the top spot in the 60th Annual Swallows Day Parade, acting as both Parade and Mercado Street Faire chairman, and provided expert leadership culminating in one of the most successful and well received seasons on record.

James was the oldest of three, a beloved husband, son, brother and uncle. Having a heart big enough for everyone, James doted lovingly on his three step grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Deborah; mother Joan, brother Craig, sister Karen, nieces Megan, Erin and Rachel, and nephews Doug and John.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday 12th May 2018 at The Vineyard Community Church, 27632 El Lazo, Laguna Niguel, CA 92677.

A Sensory Garden is A Place to Relax, Reflect and Restore

A

sensory garden communicates to the individual in a quiet way.

It seeks to stimulate the sensory nerves through careful arrangement and specific selections. Like a feather on a bird, or the whiskers on a cat, a mere touch can send a calming or stimulating response to the brain. Sensory gardens provide intimate spaces for people of all ages and abilities to immerse their senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch with scents, textures and colors of plants and related elements in nature.

Just walking around or playing in a garden will improve physical fitness, health, mood and cognition while developing gross and fine motor skills in children.

The garden experiences are appealing in a positive way, creating an invigorating, reflective and calming effect. Visits to a sensory garden have proven to increase a sense of well-being, restore mental clarity, focused attention span, delayed gratification and help manage impulses in children with autism.

A sensory garden that stimulates the five senses is of benefit to the whole community, from young children to senior citizens, as well as those members of the community who are wheelchair bound, or have mental and physical challenges, according to The Healing Circle. Time spent in natural environments can provide a range of health benefits, including reduced stress, lowered blood pressure and can also make a great contribution to emotional and physical well-being. Most gardens offer visual appeal, but a sensory garden is designed to stimulate all five senses using hardscape designs, plants, pathways and include elements such as wind chimes, windsocks, flags and children’s art.

The therapeutic benefits are many, with the five senses fully activated, creating a variety of emotional responses. Sound: water trickling from a fountain, grasses rustling in the wind, or long ribbons hanging from a tree creates peace and tranquility. Smell: scented leaves such as rosemary, mint or lavender crushed between fingers evoke a calming or invigorating feeling.

Taste: Ripe fruit directly off the vine, or trees provide satisfaction and relaxation.

Sight: colors, objects, pathway elements create a sense of control and confidence.

Touch: leaf textures, smooth, sticky, coarse, connecting with nature provides a sense of belonging.

Two popular forms of sensory garden designs are pathways and keyhole gardens. Sensory pathways can be constructed of smooth, flat, stepping stones or tree cookies with gaps wide enough for in-between planting. Pathways create interest, texture and movement. Stepping-

stones can be natural stone or concrete, or made by children to include handprints, leaf prints, shells, marbles, colored tile mosaics or smooth glass. Glass blocks or clay bricks can be laid in the sensory pathway to add additional sensory richness and variety, according to Natural Learning Initiative. Sensory pathways should be considered part of the larger pathway system and should not dead end.

OBITUARIES

Mary “Lynn” Mays Mary “Lynn” Mays passed away peacefully April 4th in her beloved San Clemente home. She was a fighter till the end and will be greatly missed by her two daughters, Amy and Becky Mays of San Clemente, and her sister, Judith O’Neil of Aliso Viejo.

Lynn was born in 1940 to Herbert and Mary Ziegler, and was raised in Evanston, IL. She was a long time San Clemente resident.

Besides being a mother of 2, she had a vital work life, spending countless hours being the core of Concordia Elementary School. She began her career as an attendance clerk and worked her way up to Office Manager when she retired in 2002.

A stroke in 2004 affected her life greatly but didn’t keep her from enjoying life. She loved her church family at St. Andrews UMC, attending musical concerts with her sister, and watching an infinite number of movies.

A “Celebration of Life” service will be held at St. Andrews by the Sea Methodist Church in San Clemente, May 19th at 1:00 pm. Those who so desire may make memorial donations in to The Splash Foundation (www. splashfoundation.com) aka Concordia Elementary School’s PTA.

Thomas Edward Bucsko February 26, 1954 – March 21, 2018

Tom was a long-time resident of San Juan Capistrano, CA and a native son of Tacoma, WA. An All-State football player at Wilson High, in Tacoma he earned a scholarship at Stanford. That summer before starting college he broke his neck the first time in a diving accident. Upon recovering, he attended the University of Washington, graduating in Fisheries Science. Tom became a noted chemist in various water treatment plants in CA. In 1986, training for a ‘century’ bicycle ride, Tom hit a car and broke his neck for a second time. Left a quadriplegic, he lived half his life in a wheelchair.

Undaunted, Tom with Roberto, caregiver of 32 years, started $umBuddy, bookkeeping and tax preparation, successful in-part due to Tom’s work with emerging voice recognition software. If you knew Tom you would say he was the most positive, upbeat person you had ever met. Contributions to the Tom E. Bucsko Memorial Fund, all proceeds supporting Roberto and his teenage son, can be made payable to Marilyn Bucsko (sister) designating The Tom E. Bucsko Fund in note line and sent to M. Bucsko, P.O. Pettis Pegged as MidRound Pick

Serra alum and San Clemente native Dante Pettis is projected as a secondor third-day pick in this weekend’s NFL Draft.

The former Washington receiver figures to be selected in the third round on Friday, April 27 or fourth round Saturday, April 28.

Pettis is a good option as a secondary receiver and has been praised as an expert route-runner. With his size at 6-foot-1, 186 pounds, Pettis might have trouble on the outside but could fit in expertly as a slot receiver.

Pettis is also a versatile talent that could find himself on an NFL roster in other ways.

Pettis made his mark in college as a punt returner with nine punt-return touchdowns to set the career NCAA record. Pettis also tied the NCAA record for consecutive games with a punt-return touchdown after scoring in the first three games of the 2017 season as a senior.

Pettis returned four punts for touchdowns as a senior, two in each of his junior and sophomore seasons and one in his freshman season.

Pettis caught 63 passes for 761 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior to lead the Huskies in all three categories.

Pettis was far and away Washington’s top receiver with nearly three times as many catches and more than double the passing yards and receiving touchdowns of his closest teammate.

In his junior season, Pettis caught fewer passes (53) but for more yards (822) and more than double the touchdowns (15) than his senior season.

In 2013 as a senior at JSerra, Pettis was the Lions’ top receiver. Pettis led JSerra in receptions (50), receiving yards (889) and touchdown catches (11).

San Juan Hills Softball Remains Undefeated in League San Juan Hills softball is on the precipice of uncharted territory.

The Stallions program has never won a league title and never won more than four league games in their previous 10 seasons of varsity competition.

Through four Sea View League games, San Juan Hills is 4-0 and sits alone on top of the league standings. Stallions history could be made over the final four games of the season.

San Juan Hills, ranked No. 2 in CIF-SS Division 4, hosted El Toro on Thursday, April 26, but results were not available at press time.

“I think this is the first year we’ve actually had a very strong team all around,” San Juan Hills coach Heather Hamilton said. “Strong infield, strong outfield, catching, pitching, batters, everybody.”

The Tartans, ranked No. 4 in Division 3, fell to Bishop Montgomery of Torrance, ranked No. 5 in Division 2, in the one-set final but got back on track with a win over San Juan Hills on Wednesday, April 25.

St. Margaret’s defeated the Stallions, 2519, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, to win 15 of its last 16 games and 20 of its last 22.

JSerra Football Will Continue OnCampus Home Games The city of San Juan Capistrano approved JSerra’s request to host on-campus varsity football games for the 2018 season.

The football team announced the decision via Twitter on Wednesday, April 25.

JSerra hosted games on its campus for the first time last season as renovations to Saddleback College’s football stadium made it unavailable to the Lions.

JSerra posted a winning record on campus last season, 3-2, with wins over Alemany of Mission Hills, Bishop Amat of La Puente and Los Alamitos.

In 2018, JSerra will host its season opener against Corona del Mar on Aug. 17 and Faith Lutheran of Nevada in a nonleague game on Sept. 14. The Lions will host three straight Trinity League games against Servite on Oct. 5, Orange Lutheran on Oct. 12 and Mater Dei on Oct. 19.

CIF-SS Rankings JSerra baseball has split its eight Trinity League games so far and holds onto the No. 10 spot in Division 1.

St. Margaret’s boys tennis is 11-2-1 overall with a 6-1-1 league record and the No. 7 ranking in Division 2.
