Plaza Banderas Hotel project. One of the conditions of approval was that the project’s final construction plans undergo review by the DRC for consistency.

On July 13, 2017, the DRC reviewed the final construction plans for Buildings A and B and provided feedback, and on Dec. 15, 2017, Mission Commercial Properties submitted a revised final construction plan for those two buildings, as well as the final construction plans for the third building, which would contain the hotel.

The DRC reviewed plans for all three of the buildings before concluding that the plans are consistent with the previously approved 2011 project.

Five things San Juan should know this week Mayor Pro Tem Brian Maryott Announces Run for Congress THE LATEST: San Juan Capistrano Mayor Pro Tem Brian Maryott, who represents District 5 on the City Council, announced on Jan. 17 that he will run for U.S. Congress in the 49th District.

Maryott, who will run as a Republican, became the ninth candidate thus far to declare their candidacy. The three other Republicans running are Rocky Chavez of Oceanside, Diane Harkey of Dana Point, and Joshua Schoonover of San Marcos. A 10th candidate, Republican Kristin Gaspar, announced she would run earlier this week.

The four Democrats who are running are Doug Applegate of San Clemente, Paul Kerr of San Diego, San Juan Capistrano’s Mike Levin and Sara Jacobs of Encinitas.

Jordan Mills of Oceanside is running as a member of the Peace and Freedom Party.

“We often hear people say that Washington is broken,” Maryott stated in a press release, “but that is an exaggeration. The problem…is that so many high-profile legislators from both parties seem to have abandoned any willingness or interest in real collaboration. Not everyone in the corporate world sits down at a meeting with the same perspective on the critical issues—but my goodness, at least there is a decorum and mutual respect.”

Citing political experience, Maryott reiterated that he is a Republican, but that he worked for four years as the chief of staff in the 1980s for “a Democrat state legislator in Massachusetts.”

Unifying Congress under whoever is president is a critical theme Maryott said he will establish in his campaign.

“What I support is a strong national defense and a Congress that’s willing to stand behind our commander in chief,” Maryott told The Capistrano Dispatch on Jan. 19. “What our president needs is a Congress that understands his mission and stands behind him.”

Maryott was impassioned about strengthening defenses and protecting the United States against threats from countries like North Korea.

failures of such institutions have hindered impoverished neighborhoods and contributed to crime in metropolitan and rural areas.

In his press release, he described the U.S.’s current approach to immigration as “chaotic and disingenuous” and that he was eager to address the issues, though no official stance on the immigration was provided in the release.

Since the announcement that Rep. Darrell Issa, who represented the 49th since 2001, is not planning to retain his seat, candidates have been bolstering their political teams in preparation for what is shaping up to be a competitive primary election. California’s top-two race system will filter out candidates on June 5.

Maryott was elected to San Juan’s City Council in 2016; therefore, if elected to Congress, he would have to vacate his Council seat with two years left on his term. He said he delayed his candidacy declaration because he wanted to gather feedback about it from the San Juan community that voted him into office.

“The one thing that would give me pause would be if the feedback was that my candidacy was too opportunistic or that I was abandoning the city,” Maryott said. “Today, it has been the opposite.

(There has been) a lot of enthusiasm from the community to help our community in a meaningful way. The feedback and enthusiasm have been tremendous.”

Maryott recently retired as a senior vice president of Wells Fargo Advisors. In December, he was chosen by his fellow Council members to serve as mayor pro tem. Maryott is also San Juan’s representative on the Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency board of directors.

WHAT’S NEXT: Maryott said that if he “pulls off the upset of all upsets” and wins

the race, he would nominate someone to fill his seat on City Council who has “put themselves forward to help the community.”

Plaza Banderas Hotel Moves Forward with Design Feedback from City Committee THE LATEST: After reviewing construction plans for the proposed Plaza Banderas Hotel on Jan. 11, the San Juan Capistrano Design Review Committee (DRC) unanimously decided that the hotel plans are consistent with the 2011 version of the project that was previously approved by the Planning Commission.

However, that does not mean there will be shovels in the ground just yet. DRC members Tim Neely, Lynn Roe and Geoff Sumich voted to continue the discussion and have Plaza Banderas developers Dan Friess, Bill Griffith and Jake Griffith return to the commission with modified elevations for two of the structures, including the main hotel building.

With that decision, City Planner David Contreras clarified that “although the architectural footprint on the foundation’s plans can move into plan check, the city cannot issue a permit on the foundation plans until the architectural plans are submitted and approved.”

“Obviously if the buildings are shifting, the foundations are also shifting with that,” Contreras said.

In Oct. 2010, the San Juan Capistrano City Council conditionally approved the

“The resolution was for a mixed-use project. The project included a freestanding restaurant and commercial retail offices. They are trying to pull a fast one by you to have you change their project for them,” Krolikowski said.

Krolikowski’s statements were in reference to changes such as Griffith’s choice to switch the use of Building B from a restaurant to additional hotel suites. The restaurant plans were moved into the main hotel building. Staff reported that the interior changes were made “to meet the requirements for a 4-star hotel operator.”

“The applicant is seeking to either eliminate or substantially reduce the commercial/retail components of the project,” Krolikowski said. “In essence, the applicant wants to make the project look the same, but with different uses.

“If you approve this tonight without submitting it to the planning commission for review, it will create more lawsuits and CEQA lawsuits,” Krolikowski concluded.

School District, Teachers Union Reach Tentative Contract Agreement THE LATEST: After more than a year of negotiations, the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) announced on Jan. 12 that officials had reached a tentative contract agreement with members of the Capistrano Unified Education Association (CUEA).

CUSD’s chief communications officer Ryan Burris said in a press release that the agreement “will provide the stability of a three-year contract” and allow the “district to continue to operate efficiently while remaining focused on the education of young people.

EYE ON SJC (Cont. from page 3) Negotiations between CUSD and CUEA had been taking place in closed session since Oct. 13, 2017, and officially stalled back in June. In October, it was announced that mediation had also failed.

The first fact-finding session for CUSD and CUEA took place on Dec. 12, and both parties agreed to participate in a second session on Jan. 12. During these sessions, a three-person panel reviewed the arguments and proposals of each side.

WHAT’S NEXT: CUSD officials released details of the three-year tentative agreement on Jan. 17, including information on salary and benefit increases, an early retirement incentive and extended day kindergarten.

CUEA officials announced the accord on their website as well, stating that specific details of the agreement are available only through CUEA representatives of each school site. City Council Approves Contract for LED Street Lights THE LATEST: The San Juan Capistrano City Council voted 4-1 on Jan. 16 to authorize City Manager Ben Siegel to execute contracts with Siemens Industry Inc. for converting city street lights from high pressure sodium lights to light emitting diode (LED) technology.

Council member Pam Patterson was the sole dissenter, saying she felt Siemens was the “more expensive option” and a “lesser product.”

WHAT’S NEXT: According to city staff, the annual savings from the conversion will be approximately $30,300, with a total program savings of nearly $400,000 over the 10-year term. The total cost to install the 1,138 eligible LED street lights is $452,400, which includes all materials, labor and equipment for installation. Siemens agreed to a taxable lease purchase agreement for a 10-year term with an annual payment of $57,700, beginning in April 2019. —AJ

Locals Give Feedback on River Street Marketplace Proposal at Scoping Meeting THE LATEST: Around 30 residents gained information and gave feedback on the proposed River Street Marketplace development to city officials, developers and study contractors, at a public scoping meeting at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center on Jan. 24.

The scoping meeting was held to receive public input on the issues for the environmental impact report (EIR)—approved in November by City Council—for the River Street Marketplace proposal; which includes five buildings, a common area, pedestrian walkways and a parking lot of 280-plus stalls.

“We’re at the very beginning of the process and (the public scoping meeting) is to scope out the environmental issues that people are concerned with,” Nicole Morse, associate principal of PlaceWorks, said. “We’ve heard traffic is one of the issues, and what we’ll do is take all of these written comments, and at the end of public review period—which is at the end of the month—take those and scope out the EIR.” The scoping meeting showcased new renderings of the proposed development, including a 3D model and video.

“I think that (River Street Marketplace) would be a nice addition to the neighborhood,” Mary Ann Davidson, who lives within walking distance from the proposed development, said. “Our concerns are getting out from Paseo Adelanto onto Del Obispo Street, but having additional parking away from the Los Rios (Historic) District would be helpful.”

Damian Orozco, owner of The Tea House on Los Rios, said he sees pros and cons to the proposed development.

“I think the idea behind (the development) is really good,” Orozco said. “Of course, there’s concerns of traffic, parking and also making sure it keeps with the Los Rios Historic District general feel.”

In conjunction of that “feel,” Orozco said he is interested in the possible tenants of River Street Marketplace and whether they will be smaller or family-run businesses.

“Los Rios is very mom-and-pop and that’s what I want to see maintained,” Orozco said. “What I don’t want is large corporations to come in.”

Janne Walker, who opposes River Street Marketplace and is involved with the recall of three city council members, said she came to the scoping meeting to learn more about the proposal and whether the information she’s heard about it is accurate. Walker’s main concerns of the proposed development are the rezoning of the land and a “growing pattern of overdevelopment” within the city, she said.

“I’m very concerned about whether we even need a large retail space in town, and we have a lot of retail space that isn’t necessarily used,” Walker said. “While I know it falls outside of the historic boundary, it’s still in our historic district, so I’m very concerned about the nature of the development.”

Local authority Attorney Michael Cindrich, the owner of the Law Offices of Michael E. Cindrich APC in San Diego, is a lifetime member of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Law (NORML) and has litigated on behalf of cannabis users’ rights.

“Part of the key elements that made Prop 64 attractive was that it provided the ability for individual cities and counties to have full authority to regulate cannabis activities, and part of that is the ability to ban cannabis,” Cindrich said.

The San Juan Capistrano City Council voted in January 2016 to ban cannabis dispensaries and manufacturers, as well as marijuana delivery within the city, and residents who want to cultivate up to six plants for personal use can do so, but the difference is they must fill out a permit application with the city.

Same as San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente allows people to grow up to six marijuana plants in their homes or accessory structures on the same property, but there is no permit application process for that.

However, San Clemente does not allow for commercial dispensaries to operate within city limits nor can delivery services

n emerald rush has come to California.

The Adult Use of Marijuana Act (AUMA) was enacted by the California Legislature in 2017, following the voterapproved Proposition 64 in 2016, which legalized recreational marijuana in the state.

It became law on Jan. 1. It is now legal for people 21 and older to consume marijuana at home, possess or gift up to one ounce of marijuana and grow up to six plants at home. Edible cannabis products are also enforced by weight, of which people can purchase and possess up to 8 grams.

Laws regarding cultivation for commercial facilities are much more complicated and are overseen by the state’s Bureau of Cannabis Control (BCC) within the Department of Consumer Affairs, Department of Food and Agriculture, and state Department of Public Health.

San Juan Capistrano voted 8,242 to 7,591 in favor of Prop 64 and Dana Point voted 9,849 to 7,760 in favor. All cities had a voter turnout of 84 percent or higher of their respective registered populations.

At San Clemente City Council meetings in early 2017, there was more support from public speakers in favor of limiting any cannabis use or cultivation, but a few advocates spoke on behalf of keeping options open.

By state law, businesses must apply for permits though the California Bureau of Cannabis Control, as well as their local governments, in order to operate dispensaries and cultivation centers.

Dana Point has the same laws as San Clemente but goes further to prohibit any cultivation of marijuana plants, whether they’re for commercial or personal use.

Susan Parmelee, the executive director of the Wellness and Prevention Center at San Clemente High School, said there are some pitfalls of normalizing cannabis that could affect youth.

“Now that we’ve made it recreational, we need to get rid of the medical designation until we have more research,” Parmelee said. “When kids hear that it’s medicine, they think it’s healthy. It makes kids think if it’s OK for adults, then it’s OK for them.

We try to emphasize what it does to teen brains because teen brains are still growing, and that’s why we emphasize the law is for people 21 years old or older.”

She said the center will likely start a campaign to make students aware of the effects of adolescent cannabis use in the fall.

“I encourage adults to educate themselves on what today’s marijuana looks like and how it really affects a teen’s decisions,” Parmelee said.

Chief of San Clemente Police Lt. Mike Peters said the most common infractions he’s seen is smoking in public since Prop 64 was passed.

“They have to recognize the law states it’s just like drinking in public,” Peters said.

Making legal matters murkier, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a memo on Jan. 4 that rescinded the Obama administration guidelines, which all but guaranteed that if dispensaries and commercial marijuana enterprises followed state laws, they should not fear prosecution. The memos from that time directed federal prosecutors to focus solely on cases regarding distribution to minors, drug cartels and other illicit activity under federal law.

Cindrich said this could cause some investors in the industry to think twice before putting more money into cannabis.

“I think any time the federal government issues orders for more flexibility to prosecute federal cannabis crimes, there’s reason to be concerned; however, we have not seen any enforcement taken,” Cindrich said. “Until that happens, it will be business as usual for those entities.”

California Southern Section U.S. District Attorney Adam Braverman, who is in charge of enforcing federal law in this district, issued a statement to NBC 7 San Diego in support of Sessions’ memo.

“The Department of Justice is committed to reducing violent crime and enforcing the laws as enacted by Congress. The cultivation, distribution and possession of marijuana has long been and remains a violation of federal law,” Braverman stated. “We will continue to utilize longestablished prosecutorial priorities to carry out our mission to combat violent crime, disrupt and dismantle transnational criminal organizations and stem the rising tide of the drug crisis.”

California’s Central District interim U.S. Attorney Nicola Hanna was appointed by Sessions just weeks ago, and there hasn’t been much reported on his view of the matter. Hanna must be confirmed within 120 days of the appointment. Driving under the influence of marijuana is also illegal. While it’s still difficult to determine whether someone is under the influence of the substance, drug recognition experts can be called to the scene to provide an assessment, such as nystagmus (or a shaking) of the eye pupil, an indicator of being under the influence. The enforcement is the same as current driving under the influence laws.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions selected the Southern District of California to receive additional resources for the fight against violent crime, according to a Jan. 5 press release from the Department of Justice. The district will receive an additional Assistant U.S. Attorney to focus exclusively on violent crime, one of 40 new federal prosecutors in 27 selected locations throughout the United States.

“Led by our 94 United States Attorney’s Offices, Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) task forces are hitting the streets across America to apprehend and bring violent criminals to justice,” Sessions stated in the release. “I have asked Congress for additional PSN funding next year because I believe nothing will be more effective at reducing violent crime. Under this program, I am asking a great deal of our United States Attorneys. I am both empowering them and holding them accountable for results. To put them in the best position to impact and reduce violent crime, it is my privilege to announce that through a reallocation of resources, we will be enlisting and deploying 40 additional violent crime prosecutors across the United States.”

Sessions continued to speak about U.S. border-related issues that have been at the center of the Trump administration’s objectives.

“In this district, we are inundated with border-related crimes,” U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman stated. “Adding a prosecutor to our roster who will focus solely on violent crime will allow us to pursue more of the cases that harm our residents and damage our neighborhoods the most, and that will translate to safer communities. We are grateful for the additional resources.”

Doheny Blues Festival to Return in May at New Venue The Doheny Blues Festival recently announced that it will return to Dana Point on May 19 and 20, but this year, at Sea Terrace Park.

Last year, the Doheny Blues Festival celebrated its 20-year anniversary. Where We Are Going and How We Are Getting There

I

n reflecting on the year that just passed and looking forward to the year ahead, I realize that the work county and local governments have been doggedly engaged in can be summarized in a single word: motion.

In July, we cleared ourselves completely from the last vestiges of the 1994 bankruptcy and we are speeding forward with a focus and alacrity befitting our inspired community. This year, residents across the county will marvel at where we are going, and how we are getting there.

From the Dana Point Harbor Revitalization project to the John Wayne Airport General Aviation Improvement Program to continued improvements on Interstate 5 in South County, the projects we are putting into motion will literally propel more residents, tourists and business leaders around the county.

The stunning—and hard-fought—improvements in transportation and public works will affect all of our day-to-day living and prospects for our future, as Orange County alleviates traffic burdens while simultaneously attracting more businesses and tourism dollars to our already thriving community.

We’ve also made relatively small changes that will result in incredibly big changes for many of our residents. For example, we have reduced taxes for homeowners and business owners participating in Urban Agricultural Incentive Zones for the city of San Juan Capistrano, protected

neighborhoods from unregulated commercial marijuana in unincorporated communities and commenced the next phase of flood protection projects in San Juan Creek.

Of all of our accomplishments, I am particularly proud of the Public Private Partnership (P3) model we invested in for the Dana Point Harbor Revitalization project. After 20 years of discussions, debates and regulatory challenges, the Dana Point Harbor Revitalization plan is underway through a P3 model that allows us to leverage private sector expertise, create jobs, spur comTHE BARTLETT mercial retail growth and BULLETIN reduce our use of public

Of course, new projects are not our only metric of success. As a county, we are responsible not only for infrastructure and growth but for one another.

This past year, we allocated additional resources toward the creation of permanent supportive housing for the homeless. Our plan will place more mentally ill homeless people into housing and connect them with the health care and other resources they need to get back on their feet. This $15 million mental health services allocation will reduce our cost to

care for these individuals, while providing them with stable homes and improved health outcomes.

We are also making government services more accessible to everyone. With the launch of three award-winning mobile apps, including myOCgov, Senior Resources Mobile App and myOC eServices, the county has increased the efficiency and effectiveness of government.

We’re making changes this year to our brick-and-mortar operations, too. Having approved a new Civic Center Master Plan, the county is on its way to building a new Civic Center that will feature a customercentric “one-stop” public service center for many government agencies. The effort will streamline interactions and improve public engagement, so the public can spend less time standing in lines and filling out forms.

And more time in motion.

At the Movies: ‘The Shape of Water’ and ‘Call Me by Your Name’ are Worthy of the Big Screen

n a rather surprisingly, underwhelming awards season this year, there are still some movies that are worth seeing on the big screen. Despite most of them being pretty safe or typical of the filmmakers’ work, my two recommendations this week are also a little flawed, but still intriguing: Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me

By Your Name and Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water.

As an almost spiritual follow-up to Todd Haynes’ Carol (2015), Call Me By Your

Name is set in 1983 northern Italy, where 17-year-old Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet) spends his summer vacation in a love triangle between French peer Marzia (Esther Garrel) and a 24-year-old American, Oliver (Armie Hammer). The Shape of Water is like Del Toro’s take on E.T. (1982) and Beauty & the Beast (1991), but with his trademark gore and “R” rating. In 1960s Cold War-era D.C., Eliza Esposito (Sally Hawkins) is a mute janitor who becomes attached to a powerful sea creature kept trapped in the government laboratory where she works.

of the best character actors in modern film, Michael Stuhlbarg. Call Me By Your Name is one of the rare films to not be completely oversaturated with hype from an Oscar campaign. The acting from Chalamet is awardworthy and one of the best breakthrough performances in the past decade. Sufjan Stevens’ dreamy music score is breathtaking.

The Shape of Water, on the other hand, is a bit heavy-handed in tone and theme, with two love scenes between a woman and fish being rather awkward. But the cinematography, art direction and special effects are dazzling on the big screen. CD

Join the Los Rios Park Garden Angels, No Wings Required

O

n any given hot summer day, the colorful native gardens at the Montanez Adobe in Los Rios Park are the headquarters to flittering beneficial pollinators, soaking up the rays and drinking nectar from the flowers.

As you meander through the pathways, you will be greeted by a variety of local Orange County butterflies that have made their way to a new home at the park.

Thanks to the dedicated Los Rios Park Garden Angel volunteers, an organization started in 2009, they have tended to the habitats every Thursday morning while caring and maintaining the thriving gardens.

Sadly, butterfly populations are on the decline worldwide due to many reasons, some to loss of habitats and most from usage of pesticides and insecticides. One thing is certain—the butterfly populations in our beloved Los Rios Park are on the rise.

The Garden Angels have taken up this plight to strengthen our local pollinators by distinguishing the fauna and flora to benefit their declining population through the North American ButterDIRT THERAPY

In order to be a NABA-certified butterfly garden, the park needed to provide a minimum of 12 host and nectar plants from the required plant list to support regional native butterfly habitats.

How Long should You Wait to Date after the Death of a Spouse?

I

n 24 years of writing about senior relationships, I’ve been asked many times, “How long should a widowed person wait to date?”

The most recent person to ask, Arlene of Laguna Woods, emailed, “What is a respectful time to wait to date after one’s spouse dies? A man I know is dating after six months of his wife’s passing. He’s in his mid-60s. I’ve asked many women what they think and what they say is, ‘It’s different for everyone.’ I say he could have waited a year out of respect for his deceased wife.”

The women who Arlene asked are correct: The length of time to wait to date again is different for everyone.

I don’t think respect is the issue here.

I don’t know any details about the man’s marriage. His wife could have been ill for years while he stood by her. If that were the case, he had already shown great respect for her.

Or, what if their marriage was unhappy and miserable? But out of respect for her and the institution of marriage, he hung in there. Waiting to date wouldn’t accomplish anything else.

A more important question: has he properly grieved and healed? If he hasn’t,

he should not be dating. Men tend to date quicker than women after the death of a spouse. What often happens, particularly with new widowers, is that they are lonely; they start to date before they are ready. A nice woman comes along and falls in love with him.

A little later, he realizes he still misses his wife terribly and dumps the new girlfriend. So, in protecting his heart, he breaks hers. That’s not good.

ON LIFE AND What’s the proper LOVE AFTER 50 period to wait for grief

By Tom Blake recovery? Impossible to say. Many times, I’ve asked widows and widowers how long they waited to date.

One widow wrote: “You’ll know you’re ready when you no longer find yourself dwelling on the past comforting. Only you will know that.”

Another widow said: “After 21 years of marriage, it took me a good two years before I was emotionally ‘whole’ enough to consider another relationship. Up to that point, my incessant talk about my late husband would have made any man run in

the opposite direction.”

What happens if someone is still grieving and he or she meets someone they think would be a great partner who becomes interested in them?

Here’s where honesty is paramount.

Out of respect for the new person, he should tell her he’s still grieving but feels they could become a loving couple, and, if she would be patient with him, it could work out. Then, as they go forward, they can openly and honestly discuss how things are progressing. In that way, no one gets blindsided.

Somewhat along that line, I had a friend whose mother saw a man she knew. His wife had died just months before. My friend said, “Mom questioned me whether it was too soon after his wife had died for her to ask him out for coffee. I told her you can’t control when opportunity knocks, and if you don’t answer the knock, it may not return.

They had coffee. The next Sunday, the man took her to church. Six months later, they were married.”

A friend, Gale, told me years ago: “The man in my life had already done his grieving before his wife died, and no one has the right to dictate what that mourning

period should be or for how long. That’s a right reserved exclusively for the partner left behind after a spouse dies.”

In other words, it’s no one’s business except the partner left behind on when they decide to date.

One thing is certain: As we enter our 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, we don’t have a lot of time to waste in deciding if we’re ready to date or not.

So, perhaps Arlene will not judge too harshly the mid-60s widower who is dating six months after his wife passed away.

Let’s hope he has adequately healed.

South County All-Star Football Profiles

Several local football players have been selected to take part in the 59th Orange County All-Star Classic at Orange Coast College on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. Tickets to the game, presented by Costa Mesa United and the Los Angeles Chargers, are available for $10 on presale at www.ocallstarclassic.eventbrite.com or for $12 at the gate on Saturday. San Clemente coach Jaime Ortiz is the head of the South County team that will look to break a 27-27-3 all-time tie with the North. Here’s a look at a couple of all-stars from San Juan Hills, JSerra and Capistrano Valley Christian.

Grover: Honestly, it’s been a childhood dream. I remember coming to watch these games when I was young. It was a huge thing for me. I always thought it would be the coolest thing to be out here.

The Capistrano Dispatch: What does it mean to be an all-star?

Lopez: To know that those four years of football paid off.

Even though I might not get a scholarship or a full ride, I love being out here. I’m glad to be a part of this all-star team and be part of a new group. I get to play football again.

What are you looking to get out of the experience?

This week, I’m looking to have fun. Have fun with some of the guys I’ve been playing football with for the last four years. If (college) offers show up, offers show up.

What are you looking to get out of the experience?

Honestly, I’m just glad that I get to play football again. Another game, one last game of high school football.

What is your favorite part about football?

Being a defensive tackle and defensive end; it’s hitting the running back. You hear that crack, and it’s a satisfying sound.

What is your favorite high school football memory?

It’d be my senior year when we beat Great Oak High School.

It was a 40-yard kick, and our kicker just booted it in. It was one of the most exciting times of my life.

Super Bowl: Patriots or Eagles?

Patriots all the way. I’ve been a Pats fan since 2000.

SVC’S CARPENTIER ‘THE MACHINE’ CLIMBS CIF-SS GOALS CHART The goal totals for Saddleback Valley Christian’s Mej Carpentier are nothing short of astounding.

Carpentier scored nine goals on Jan. 22 as the Warriors cruised over Tarbut V’ Torah, 11-0. The senior is now one goal away from fifth-most in CIF-SS history. She is only 18 goals away from fourth all-time and just 27 from third.

What is your favorite part about football?

Just how every play you get to go against somebody, and you don’t have to say sorry if you beat them up. You just keep going and keep going and keep beating them up until they earn your respect.

What is your favorite high school football memory?

Going 10-0 freshman year. Everybody was so close. We beat Mater Dei who was supposed to be the greatest freshman team.

Thornton: It’s an honor. Coming from a small school, trying to come out here and compete with the best of the best.

What are you looking to get out of the experience?

I’ve always been an underdog from a small school. I’m a smaller guy on the defensive line. I just want to come out here and show I can compete with the best of the best.

What is your favorite part about football?

Taking the hits and giving people hits. The aggressive part.

What is your favorite high school football memory?

I would have to say senior year homecoming (against Fairmont Prep). Overtime. We walked off with a field goal.

I’m going to have to go with the Pats. (Tom) Brady. Brady’s the G.O.A.T.

Eagles. I’m sick of seeing the Pats win every year. ranked No. 4 in Division 7. The Warriors host The Webb Schools on Friday, Jan. 26 and Pacifica Christian on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

JSERRA GIRLS CONTINUE DOMINANT RUN The defending CIF-SS and state champions are on quite a roll.

The Lions haven’t lost since Dec. 3 … of 2016. JSerra (13-0-2, 4-0-1) are unbeaten through 15 games this season, and while the aggressive and high-scoring offense is still there led by junior Isabella D’Aquila, it’s the defense that’s been most impressive.

Led by two sophomores, goalkeeper Ryan Campbell and defender Jordyn Gather, the Lions have strung together 10 consecutive shutouts and only allowed one goal all season.

JSerra is top-ranked in Division 1, No. 2 nationally by USA Today and MaxPreps and No. 4 nationally by Top Drawer Soccer.

JSerra continues against Mater Dei on Jan. 30 and closes out the regular season at Santa Margarita on Feb. 1.

QUICK HITS St. Margaret’s boys and girls teams were featured in the CIF-SS polls this week. The girls (12-4, 7-0) earned the No. 5 spot in Division 4 and have outscored league opponents, 43-0. The boys (10-7-2, 5-0-2) are No. 7 in Division 6 and unbeaten in their last eight games.

San Juan Hills girls are unbeaten in league (6-5-6, 1-0-2) and haven’t allowed a goal in their last four games. The result of the Stallions match against Capistrano Valley was not available at press time, but San Juan Hills continues in league at El Toro on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

San Juan Hills boys picked up their first win of league over Aliso Niguel, 2-1, on Jan. 24. Senior Cameron Conrad and junior Marcos Ortiz scored the goals for the Stallions.
