“The behavior of this small group is reminiscent of what we are seeing on a national level; character defamation and spreading of rumors by those whose candidates did not get elected,” she wrote.

“There is plenty of lack of decorum to go around both on and off the dais, but as Mayor, I pledge to redouble my efforts to set an example for others,” Ferguson wrote. “I hope everyone will do the same.

It would greatly help us to efficiently conduct the city’s business.”

Five things San Juan should know this week JSerra Gets City Approval for First-Ever Home Football Games THE LATEST: For the first time in the school’s history, Friday night football is coming to JSerra’s campus.

The San Juan Capistrano City Council voted 4-0-1—Councilwoman Pam Patterson recused herself—on June 20 to allow the home games after receiving a request from JSerra High School to use the existing campus football facilities for five games this fall. The approval was met with an eruption of cheers and applause from the over 100 supporters in attendance Tuesday night—from JSerra football players and cheerleaders, to staff, parents and even the Lions’ mascot.

The competitive program, which plays in the high-profile Trinity League, has spent the past several years playing its home games at nearby Saddleback College in Mission Viejo. But renovations to Saddleback’s campus stadium will make the site unavailable to JSerra in the fall.

First-year head coach Pat Harlow said school administrators scoured the South Orange County area looking for a possible home site. Harlow said JSerra reached out to Capistrano, Saddleback Valley, Irvine and even Carlsbad Unified School Districts to work on a field-use agreement, but no site was able to accommodate JSerra on a consistent basis.

The inability to find a site forced JSerra to look inward.

“Our only option was to play at home,” Harlow said.

The site of the new “stadium” will be JSerra’s already existent practice football field on the south side of campus.

The school plans on erecting temporary bleachers around all four corners of the field. Current plans presented to the City Council say there will be enough seats to accommodate between 1,000 to 1,500 fans per game.

Parking on JSerra’s north and south campuses will be open on game days, and the school will utilize shared parking with the nearby Kaiser Permanente medical facility. If the need for more parking spaces arises, JSerra is able to use an extra 100 spaces at Saddleback Valley Christian School across the street.

some stipulations. The city did not approve temporary parking on Camino Capistrano as JSerra had requested, because staff said it would impede traffic flow and potentially cause delays.

And after hearing from a couple concerned residents who live near the practice football field, the Council also decided to direct staff to organize follow-up meetings after each game with city officials, JSerra representatives and nearby residents in order to address any problems that arise. The two residents who addressed the Council with concerns said lighting, noise and errant soccer balls and baseballs have been ongoing issues.

“It’s a matter of trust,” one resident said. “We need some accountability.”

JSerra President Rich Meyer told the Council that the school’s staff members are committed to mending relationships with their neighbors.

“We recognize that a simple meeting one time isn’t going to heal all wounds and recover trust that may have been lost over a period of 14 years,” Meyer said of previous outreach efforts. “We are committed to building a solid relationship. While we can’t undo what may have been said or promised (in the past), we are committed to making this a great partnership moving forward.”

WHAT’S NEXT: The use of its home field is only a short-term solution for JSerra.

The school will be able to use its facilities for just five games this season beginning in September and ending in early November. After that, the entitlements approved by the city will expire.

“In 14 years our kids have never had a true home game. Everybody is just stoked,” Harlow said. “I think that will be a really cool experience for high school kids. It’s a great way to build school spirit

and hopefully San Juan residents will come and watch us and we can make them proud.”

Online Petition Surfaces Calling for Removal of Mayor THE LATEST: A San Juan Capistrano resident—along with 117 residents who have signed his petition—are calling for the San Juan City Council to vote “no confidence” and remove Councilwoman Kerry Ferguson from her current role as mayor.

In his online petition, local business owner Ted Rosenfeldt writes that Ferguson “lacks the leadership skills to motivate the Council to make important decisions concerning the future of San Juan Capistrano.”

“She has not demonstrated the ability to bring issues forward and develop consensus among the Council to address the needs of our community,” the petition states.

Rosenfeldt wrote that Ferguson lacks understanding of transportation issues and is unable to encourage decorum from the public and other Council members.

“Indecision, rancor and derision are wasting time, taxpayer money and setting us back,” Rosenfeldt wrote. “We call on the City Council to act decisively and relieve Kerry Ferguson from her position as Mayor and restore order to the gover-

San Juan Sees Positive Trolley Numbers During First Two Weekends THE LATEST: San Juan Capistrano’s free summer trolley service began on June 9, yielding high ridership numbers that have exceeded the expectations of city officials.

The majority of the $154,000 trolley program is funded with Measure M2 and air quality grants from the Orange County Transportation Authority. In order to secure future grants, trolleys in San Juan must have a minimum of six boarding per trolley, per hour.

During opening weekend, more than 550 people rode the trolleys Friday through Sunday, while only 264 were needed to meet the minimum grant requirements, according to Assistant Public Works Director Tom Toman. During peak times, the wait time between trolleys was generally 20 to 25 minutes.

Toman said nearly 680 people rode the trolleys throughout the second weekend of service—a 21 percent increase from the first weekend.

The trolley will continue to run for 13 consecutive weekends (through Labor Day). The service takes riders along a continuous loop from downtown San Juan to the Dana Point trolley connection stop at Stonehill Drive and Del Obispo Street.

Hours of operation are Fridays 5-10 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sundays 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

San Juan Summer Nites Concert Series in Full Swing THE LATEST: The city’s annual free summer concert series kicked off on June 21 with a performance by Redneck Rodeo at the Historic Town Center Park, located at 31852 El Camino Real.

In addition to the live country music and dancing, the evening included local food, beer and wine vendors, a local business expo, and free activities for kids, including face painting by the City’s Youth Advisory Board members.

The concert series continues on Wednesday, July 19 with a performance by the U2 Experience. Classic rock band, The Trip, will play on Aug. 16, and country band SMITH will close out the concert series on Sept. 20. Each event runs from 6-8 p.m.

Sovereign Health, Vedanta Laboratories under Investigation by FBI THE LATEST: On Thursday, June 15, Sovereign Health, a behavioral health treatment provider based in San Clemente, issued a statement regarding the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s widespread inspection.

The FBI had agents search locations in San Clemente on Tuesday, June 13, that included Sovereign’s headquarters, Vedanta Laboratories and the residence of the company’s CEO, Tonmoy Sharma.

According to a post on Sovereign Health’s Facebook page, the company’s Culver City and Palm Desert locations were also searched. Officials with the FBI said they cannot comment on the details of the search warrants they served the company and other locations, as the investigation is ongoing.

When agents arrived at the locations, Sharma said the investigators threatened his staff at gunpoint.

“The way they executed these search warrants was a disgrace,” Sharma said in a press release. “All they had to do was tell our senior management what they needed and we would have gladly complied. We

have nothing to hide. Instead, they burst into our facilities, upsetting patients who are already fragile and dealing with trauma. They threatened our unarmed staff at gunpoint. And they didn’t even seem to know why they had busted into our facilities.”

In a phone interview on June 15, Haroon Ahmad, media and public relations specialist with Sovereign Health, reiterated Sharma’s comment that patients dealing with trauma were affected by the FBI’s presence. According to Sovereign Health’s release, Department of Health Care Services members handed out pieces of paper with additional resources and information about other treatment centers in the area where the patients could go. Following the start of the FBI’s investigation on June 13, Ahmad also said some patients left rehabilitation treatment at the company’s San Clemente headquarters on their own accord to go to other treatment providers.

Although the statement said employees were threatened at gunpoint by officials, Ahmad did not see the weapons drawn himself, but said, “it could have happened at one of our other locations.”

FBI officials said their investigation and service of warrants was done legally.

“Law enforcement officials executed search warrants approved by a federal judge that authorized them to search the premises as part of an ongoing criminal investigation,” said Laura Eimiller, a spokesperson for the FBI in Los Angeles.

“The actions of the agents and officers involved in the search were in full compli-

ance with the law and our investigation is ongoing.”

Sovereign employees were asked to give out their contact information and social security numbers too, said Ahmad.

As of Thursday morning, two days after the initial search, Ahmad said normal operations have resumed at Sovereign’s San Clemente location, but could not verify if Vedanta Laboratories – described by Ahmad as a toxicology lab used for Sovereign Health’s client needs– has returned to regular business.

WHAT’S NEXT: Since Tuesday, the FBI has maintained that because the warrants are sealed, they cannot comment on the investigation until the judge unseals them.

OC Sheriff’s Department Drops Details from Blotter Department to switch to interactive crime map in the next few months

n June 12, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department officially stopped including detailed summaries for each of its sheriff’s blotter entries, a move that will change the way residents and reporters gather information about recent crimes or calls for service in their communities.

Residents can still access the sheriff’s blotter at OCSD’s website and view the type of calls the department is responding to, as well as the date, time and location of each call. The change is that viewers are no longer able to click “read” on the far right column and access detailed information about each call.

In lieu of the detailed blotter entries, OCSD officials have announced that a transition to an interactive crime map is in the works. The new software, called Crime Mapping, will provide residents with the same information the current blotter does—type of call date, time and approximate location.

guson to department personnel, various reasons were listed for the switch from blotter summaries to the interactive crime map. Ferguson wrote that the department has “received complaints that too much information has been provided in the past,” and that OCSD wants to be transparent in the types of calls they respond to, while also balancing that transparency with victims’ and witnesses’ confidentiality. He said the aim is to achieve consistency across OCSD’s cities and departments in the type and amount of information that is released.

OCSD Public Affairs Manager Jaimee Blashaw said the department does not keep a log of the number of complaints they’ve received about the blotter. However, she said that, anecdotally, the department has had residents contact them regarding privacy concerns.

“In weighing the importance of being transparent with the public and protecting the privacy of the residents we serve, the department opted for this new format, which better reflects our commitment to both ideals,” Blashaw said.

Ferguson also wrote that working on

the blotter is labor-intensive for officers, and OCSD’s “limited resources can be used elsewhere for increased public safety.” He added that not providing blotter details and summaries is the industry standard.

Lt. Scott Spalding, chief of police for San Juan Capistrano, said that in San Juan, the blotter could take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half per day for a deputy to work on, which is time spent in an office instead of increasing public safety in town. That adds up, Spalding said, when you consider the 13 cities that make up OCSD. Blashaw said OCSD was the only law enforcement agency in Orange County that provided additional narrative in its blotter.

The Anaheim Police Department utilizes Crime Mapping, Huntington Beach uses a mapping software called Crime Reports, and the cities of Irvine and Newport Beach use software called Spot Crime.

Blashaw said that removing the additional blotter descriptions will not limit the public’s knowledge of what type of crime is going on in the city.

“Residents will still have access to the type of call, block number, case number and time of day,” she said. “In addition, our new software will map the location of the calls so residents can more easily see where in the city crime is occurring.”

Lt. Spalding said he anticipates that OCSD’s crime mapping software will roll out within the next few months.

City Honors Local Mariachi Group for Win at Mission’s Battle of the Mariachis For the second year in a row, Mariachi Nuevo Capistrano took home the grand prize at Mission San Juan Capistrano’s Battle of the Mariachis Festival, which took place on May 13. The Mission’s 13th annual festival featured 14 mariachi groups from across four states.

Based in San Juan Capistrano, Mariachi Nuevo Capistrano is made up of passionate musicians who can often be found playing at local events, fundraisers and restaurants around town. At the Battle of the Mariachis, the group took home first place in the open category (a $1,500 prize) as well as the “Spirit of San Juan Community Award.”

DANA POINT Judge Rules in City’s Favor Regarding Behavioral Health Treatment Facility • A Superior Court Judge recently ruled in the city’s favor regarding a behavioral health treatment facility operating in Dana Point.

After a non-jury trial case which took place on May 30 and 31, the judge found an operator of a behavioral health treatment center in violation of the Dana Point Municipal Code and therefore qualified it as a nuisance, according to the court document.

The city filed a lawsuit against Capo by the Sea and John T. Kahal, the owner and operator of the residential addiction treatment center, and found they failed to obtain a state-required license which rendered the property a nuisance.

In the city’s Municipal Code, it classifies an unlicensed addiction treatment facility as non-allowable use and is prohibited. According to the court documents, the facility was providing supervision to the clients living in the center’s residential housing, providing clients daily treatment and more.

According to the document, the property is operated “as part of an overall alcohol and drug addiction plan,” and would fit the criteria to need a state-required license before operation.

SAN CLEMENTE Heal the Bay: Under the Pier Fails, Poche Succeeds in Water Quality Report • Heal the Bay, an environmental nonprofit organization, released its annual report card last week regarding beach water quality in California.

This year, the San Clemente Pier’s water quality, at the testing site directly below the Pier, was dropped from an A grade last Page 7

year to an F, testing so poorly Heal the Bay ranked it second on its top 10 “beach bummers” list.

City officials became aware of problems underneath the Pier last year when the Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) began publishing frequent water quality advisories from 100 to 500 feet north and south of the structure. The county started testing the water under the Pier in 2015.

City officials have said they think most of the problems related to the Pier’s water come from the droppings of pigeons and seagulls that are abundant at the structure. But it also could be coming from a man-made source, such as a sewage leak or runoff from the heavy rains Orange County experienced this winter.

“It likely could be a little bit of both,” said Sarah Sikich, vice president of Heal the Bay. “The last few years we’ve seen favorable water quality, but because of the rain, one part of (the problem) seems to be the storm water runoff.”

Heal the Bay conducts testing throughout the year and compiles and compares the results with OCHA in order to formulate its report card. The nonprofit tests for E. coli, coliform, and enterococcus.

These bacteria come from warm-blooded animals, Sikich said, but a key note to remember is that these are indicator bacteria and may not indicate a source.

Cynthia Mallett, the city of San Clemente’s environmental program supervisor, said people aren’t supposed to recreate under the Pier, and therefore public health “is being protected.”

It can be an expensive process to protect the Pier. Mallett said the city will try using wooden blocks to deter the birds, and next year they may put up netting underneath the structure to ensure birds can’t build nests.

Meanwhile, Poche Beach, which had been on the bummers list for years, received “honor roll” accolades and an A grade. SOME BACKGROUND ON OUR DECISION TO SELL THE ITO NURSERY —Sheree & Doug Ito, Owners of Ito Nursery, San Juan Capistrano There has been a lot of talk lately about our decision to sell our land, the Ito Nursery, and the development that is being proposed by the buyer. Doug and I are feeling like we are being attacked for our decision to sell. We feel a little background might be helpful for you in understanding our family’s history and where we are coming from.

Jimmy and Hiroko Ito purchased the land in 1959. Thus, the Ito family has owned the nursery property for 58 years, longer than San Juan Capistrano has been a city, and well before the Los Rios Specific Plan was originally put into place in 1978.

Jimmy and Hiroko Ito chose San Juan as a haven to grow their family business and to own land they hoped to leave as a legacy for future generations. This was especially important to them since despite being U.S citizens, during World War II they, along with other family members, were sent to the internment camp of Manzanar. At this time, all of the Ito family businesses and property were confiscated, never to be returned.

After the war, when they were finally released from Manzanar, times were very hard with the lingering antagonism toward people of Japanese heritage. Jimmy took on jobs no one else wanted to earn money to try and restore his family’s economic stability, with the eventual goal of owning a piece of property that he could pass down to his children.

Because of his time incarcerated in Manzanar and the loss of all he previously owned, Jimmy was determined to be seen as a good citizen and neighbor, so that he and his family would never have to experience the devastation of losing their material possessions and livelihood again.

When the Los Rios Precise Plan was being constructed in 1978 and then updated in 1997, Jimmy went along with the designations to his property, first because he knew his sons were going to continue working at the nursery and he didn’t envision potential change until long after he was gone. Secondly, he did not want to go against what was being suggested and be perceived as a troublemaker. He’d had too much of that during the war. Lastly, he was assured that this specific plan was put in place to protect the historic structures that already existed and that it would not affect the future value of his land.

land. After years of contemplation, we decided it was time to sell, and spent more than a year researching and interviewing potential buyers. We looked for someone that would bring a wonderful vision to our property and town; a project that would open up our property for the enjoyment of locals and visitors alike. The final decision was not solely about money. Our hope was, after 58 years of ownership, we could leave a positive legacy for the Ito family.

Truth, honesty, transparency, and a willingness to work with and listen to the residents are the qualities we looked for in a buyer. Dan Almquist and his company, Frontier Real Estate, have exhibited these qualities and behaved with the utmost integrity in all their actions.

We hope that our esteemed City Council will remember, when making decisions about our land, that the Ito family has rights too.

We hope that in the coming months when the “River Street” project comes before the various committees and eventually to the City Council for approval, you will make the best decisions for the entire community.

IN RESPONSE TO “LIFE UNDER THE FLIGHT PATH” LETTER —Art Burnevik, Dana Point Thank you to letter author Marvin Smith for expressing my thinking about “the plane noise.” I live on board in Dana Point Harbor and I would like the EPA and the Coastal Commission to convene a multi-million dollar “conversation” about sea lions barking at night and doing something about the fog horn and the sound of the waves on days with particularly heavy surf … not!

Mr. Smith touched on what I see as a burgeoning social malady that appears to be limitless—PLS (Perfect Life Syndrome). From the perfect razor, the perfect underwear, the perfect smile,

the perfect shirt length, the perfect car, it just follows that everything and everybody around the core of the unadaptable must comply with a flawed premise—that airplanes are causing excessive noise and disturbing the “balance of nature” for Dana Point residents. If it is natural silence that appeals, then move to the jungle or the country.

In Dana Point Harbor, my peaceful, natural environment is stifled on weekend nights by cattle boat charters with live bands playing so loud it drowns out my sound system and nearly rattles the Ibuprofen tablets in my medicine chest. The primary aircraft traveling my flight path are mostly military. I salute them as a sign of strength and security. I’m sure there are those people with PLS that would prefer that we close Pendleton to make theirs a more “perfect” environment.

Between the Harley mid-life cruisers and the audio sound systems with mindthumping base output heard from a block away, I think Smith has the right idea. Focus on the obvious sound pollution. If you buy a house next to the railroad tracks, don’t ask the railroad to move. The idea of a perfect world may apply to underwear and razors but let’s face it—no matter where you live, people must adapt. If you live next to John Wayne or in Newport Beach and you don’t like jets, why move there in the first place?

Complaining about the limited daytime jet noise in Dana Point is nonsense. Sorry, it’s not a perfect world.

SOAPBOX the relatively recent increase in CO2,” and closed with, “The dream of a civilization independent of fossil fuels with current or anticipated technology would require a significant reduction in some combination of population and/or living standards.”

This sounds more like a defeatist attitude that can only support our fears. What Mr. Mitchell seems to be saying is that the human population of Earth is in a no-exit dilemma. There is no viable or satisfactory solution to our problem—neither technology nor cultural adaption can help us—so stop trying to force your doom and gloom scenario on the rest of us.

Mr. Mitchell mentioned receding glaciers, the cyclic nature of climate, and the carbon and release cycle as natural phenomenon. I agree with him. Over the past few million years, Milankovitch cycles have served as the pacemaker for the glacial-interglacial cycles over the Quaternary.

For the past 800,000 years, atmospheric carbon dioxide has averaged 280 parts per million (ppm). We arrived here about 300,000 years ago, followed by civilization about 12,000 years ago. During this time atmospheric, CO2 remained relatively stable, thanks to the natural CO2 sinks— the oceans, plants and other organisms that use photosynthesis to remove carbon from the atmosphere by incorporating it into biomass. These natural CO2 sinks removed about the same quantity of CO2 from the atmosphere, maintaining a safe balance, so that life prospered. But, then, the Industrial Age arrived in 1750 C.E., and we started digging up coal—carbon that had been sequestered in the ground for millions of years. We began to burn it in order to warm and light our homes.

Then came the discovery of oil and natural gas, and the energy race was on.

As the demand for coal, oil and gas intensified, we released more and more CO2 back into the environment, exceeding the ability of the natural carbon sinks to maintain equilibrium. The result has been an exponential increase in atmospheric CO2, from 280 ppm to 410 ppm, an increase of 130 ppm over above the natural level that existed for hundreds of thousands of years before human civilization arrived.

As atmospheric CO2 levels increased, the planet began warming. This has caused a break up of ice shelves, collapse of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets and an accelerated collapse of glaciers originally held back by the ice shelves, resulting in a rise in sea level. Natural carbon sinks became overwhelmed.

Eventually, the land and oceans will take up most of the extra CO2, but as much as 20 percent may remain in the atmosphere for many thousands of years.

Side effects of climate change include an increase in storm severity, ocean acidification, flooding, extreme heat waves, drought and wildfires.

corals, and calcareous plankton—threatening the entire ocean food web.

The risk of wildfires increases exponentially during extended heat waves and droughts. They release CO2 and reduce the number of trees available to absorb CO2, a double whammy for the atmosphere.

In the words of the crew of Apollo 13, “Houston, we have a problem,” and we need to find solutions, quickly.

I’m not ready to give up, are you? How far are you willing to go to save Earth for future generations?

TIME TO RETIRE THE TOLL ROAD —Pete van Nuys, San Clemente Our current Tollway worries are based on one highly questionable guess.

“According to (Orange County Transportation Authority), agencies traffic is projected to increase 65 percent,” says the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA).

This is the same prediction we received on the Measure M2 committee heard 10 years ago. And it’s the context in which our group proposed the “Beltway” alternative—which studies, completed at that time, showed it would out-perform the north-south extension to the I-5. TCA’s tollway was not needed 10 years ago, and it’s not needed now.

The reality of induced demand confirms that, as Caltrans said 17 years ago, “We can’t build ourselves out of congestion.”

We don’t build six-lane superhighways to hold in reserve like a spare tire in our trunk, just in case we need it. Ignoring subsequent changes in transportation habits and even more dramatic elements, like platooning and autonomous vehicles, arterial solutions like La Pata are far more appealing and less destructive. Blade Runner predictions about density and future congestion require discussion of all possible alternatives, not the dog-and-pony shows TCA’s hired flacks orchestrate.

San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point and San Clemente are being “divided and conquered,” manipulated into a Hobson’s Choice by TCA. Our elected officials should require Rancho Mission Viejo to provide adequate access for their customers. Future congestion on the I-5 must be addressed by Caltrans within the limits of their current right-of-way. OCTA must be assertive in developing diverse transportation solutions and new ideas.

But TCA has no place in any of these conversations. They have muddied the waters for 30 years with lots of cementproducing with little actual transportation value. It’s time to abolish TCA.

alma Hayek is the latest Hollywood sex symbol to undergo the “ugly makeover” for a dramatic performance, and it’s not exactly a bad thing. Usually, when a beautiful actress downgrades her looks, she’s accused of aiming for an Oscar, a la Charlize Theron in Monster (2003).

But here, in Miguel Arteta’s Beatriz at Dinner, we have a fine performance and transformation from Hayek in a rather independent and low-key satire.

In San Fernando Valley, Beatriz (Hayek) is a lower middle class “healer” who works with physical health and body massages. Two of her clients are the wealthy couple, Cathy (Connie Britton) and Grant (David Warshofsky), whose daughter Beatriz helped care for her as she was ill. One night after giving Cathy a massage, Beatriz discovers her car won’t start, and she is invited to stay for a work dinner party Grant is hosting.

John Lithgow co-stars as a rather antagonistic party guest, and Chloë Sevigny and Jay Duplass also appear.

Beatriz at Dinner isn’t particularly subtle with its direction and narrative, but it does effectively focus on social commentary on racial issues and culture that The Dinner failed to do last month. Arteta’s film was scripted by Mike White, who is the pretty clever writer of Dead Man on Campus (1998) and The Good Girl (2002), but here he plays it safe, maybe intentionally.

Most of the themes are on the nose, but not unpleasantly. Beatriz doesn’t try to break new ground, but reminds us that people you think you might know can change at any second. CD

Ohana fest returns to doheny

or the second year, Doheny State Beach is set to host the Ohana Music Festival, featuring returning grunge icon Eddie Vedder from the popular 90s band Pearl Jam as well as SoCal’s Social Distortion, Jack Johnson, Pixies, Fiona Apple and more.

The music festival added an additional date from last year, making it a full weekend of music and local food and beverage vendors on the beach from Friday, Sept. 8 through Sunday, Sep. 10.

Eddie Vedder’s second performance at the Ohana Music Festival comes with unexpected anticipation this year. Given recent news in the sub-genre, his show might be emotional for some devoted fans.

Although ticket costs are upwards of three digits, and the headliners will close before the local bars come to life, concert goers will also be contributing a portion of their expenses back to South Orange County outdoor organizations such as the San Onofre Parks Foundation and Doheny State Beach Interpretive Association.

OC Fairgrounds Concerts at Pacific Amphitheatre Venture out of South Orange County by taking a trip up north to the OC Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa for one (or several) of their countless concerts at the Pacific Amphitheatre. This year, the OC Fair opens its gates to the public on Friday, July 14 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 13.

Andrew McMahon and the Wilderness, Dana Point’s local indie-pop musician-turned-star, has made it possible for locals to enjoy a large production-quality show for the entire family free of cost.

OC Parks’ Summer Concert Series will host the former Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin songwriter under the moniker Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness on Thursday, Aug. 17 at Bluff Park at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point. Concert goers can still bring blankets and their Tommy Bahama Costco chairs like other traditional OC Parks shows, but will be encouraged to stand up and move at McMahon’s show.

“I grew up here and so much of my music was written within miles of Salt Creek, so I think it’s the perfect place to play these songs,” McMahon said. “However people decide they want to listen is up to them, but it’s always my goal to get people on their feet. I hope whoever shows up to this one leaves feeling like they were entertained and would come back again.”

Should the Tides Turn...

Although shark activity seems to have slowed down a bit since the relentless sightings and beach advisories in May, they could be hanging around longer, and if that happens, people will need an alternative to enjoying summer on the shore or lakeside. The ocean is arguably the most treasured feature of San Clemente, but it can’t be fully enjoyed when the risk or the thought of apex predators abound, which may give people peace of mind to try something different. Within an hour’s drive at most, there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor summer activities in or near South Orange County.

Probably the largest lake in the immediate area, Lake Elsinore offers opportunities for summer fun for the whole family. About an hour’s drive through Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano, there are plenty of fishing opportunities as well as lessons on various watercrafts, boating and more. Lake Mission Viejo and Rancho Santa Margarita Lake are closer alternatives, but different rules apply for each. As long as you keep it in one of the city’s designated enclosures, barbecues and fire pits are allowed on the beaches.

Like a series of torches signifying the start of summer, the fire pits are typically all burning from San Onofre to Dana Point Harbor each night. San Clemente beaches and pier are open from 4 a.m. until midnight. If you can find one during the Fourth of July celebrations, they’re a great way to keep warm under a sky bursting with color.

Even though the ocean shores of San Clemente and Dana Point may still have lingering sharks, the beaches constantly need help with cleaning. Some of the prominent beach cleanup organizations in the area include San Clemente Beach Conservation Program (SCBCP), Surfrider Foundation and OC Coastkeeper. Parks in San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano have some of the most enchanting views in the area. At Pines Park in Dana Point, people can get a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, let the kids frolic on the playground or enjoy a picnic. The same can be said of San Clemente’s Linda Lane Park, a favorite among locals. San Juan’s Reata Park is an escape from the hustle and bustle of the main city thoroughfares. Nearby Casper’s Wilderness is a great place to take a hike with the family.

enowned American country guitarist and singer Junior Brown is stopping by The Coach House on Saturday, July 8, for a show that is sure to please true fans of the country western genre.

An Americana artist known for his unique voice, songwriting and double necked “guit-steel” guitar, Brown has released nine studio albums while appearing twice on the Billboard country singles charts. Brown’s signature “guit-steel” sound combines standard and steel guitars, allowing him to switch mid-song between the two while singing.

Fans will recognize hits such as, “My Wife Thinks You’re Dead,” which earned Brown a County Music Association award. Brown has also received several Grammy nods and has been involved with an array of collaborations, films and television projects. Most recently, he recorded the “Better Call

Born in Cottonwood, Arizona in 1952, Brown’s love of country music developed at an early age. That passion for country and western music deepened by the late 1960s, and he could often be found honing his skills in small clubs.

“I played more nights in honky-tonks during the 70s and 80s than most musicians will see in a lifetime,” Brown said. “I did so many years of that, night after night, four sets a night, 15-minute breaks; I mean after that, you gotta get good or get out.”

Siempre Adelante, Mark Outgoing chamber of commerce CEO Mark Bodenhamer reflects on past work, hopes for future

A

fter seven years of serving as the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce president and CEO, Mark Bodenhamer bid farewell to the community last week as he and his family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Bodenhamer’s wife, Tallia Hart, was recently hired as the new CEO of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. Hart was previously the CEO of the Irvine Chamber of Commerce.

The San Juan chamber’s installation dinner on June 7 served as an emotional night of goodbyes and well wishes for Bodenhamer, who thanked the chamber board, community members, volunteers, business leaders and his staff—chamber operations manager Jennifer Pointer and program manager Claire Sussex—for making his time in San Juan a memorable and rewarding ride.

The Capistrano Dispatch asked Bodenhamer a few questions before he left for San Francisco, and he shared the following reflections: His proudest moments and accomplishments with the chamber: Bodenhamer said when he reflects on his last seven years at the chamber, he thinks of “big picture” improvements and the efforts of the entire community rather than individual achievements.

“When I got here, there were a lot of empty storefronts. There was a general consensus that the downtown was struggling. If you look around now, it’s still not easy for anybody, but there are a lot

of new storefronts and restaurants. The downtown is buzzing with new, exciting additions, like Trevor’s at the Tracks and the Mission store and gateway. I see it as more of a vibrant destination than when I first got here.”

When asked about challenges the business community has overcome through the years, Bodenhamer recalled the collaborative effort of the city, chamber and business leaders to survive the Ortega Highway interchange project.

“That was a huge success for us, especially with the amount of outreach we did leading up to the Ortega Interchange project. For six months, then-mayor John Taylor and City Manager Karen Brust walked with us to every business in town and spoke with everyone who was impacted by the project. We did everything that we could to arm people with good information and resources.”

The future of San Juan and its business community: “The most important things we need are the hotels. We need not one, but both of them. And we need to do everything we can to expedite their completion.”

Bodenhamer said the additional Transient Occupancy Tax revenue from the hotels will help to beautify downtown and will help support local restaurants and retail businesses.

“I know I’m preaching to the choir.

There’s really nothing more important that we could do than finding a path forward for both of these hotel projects.”

Bodenhamer said the city will also need to tackle parking issues in the near future.

“We can try all of these wonderful, creative ideas for generating economic growth, but we have a hard cap on parking with only so many spaces, and that impacts everybody, not just shops and restaurants.”

Bodenhamer said new developments and hotels adding parking spaces downtown will help alleviate that problem.

“People who want to come into town and visit the Mission or grab lunch are staying in Dana Point or Irvine or somewhere else, and they have to drive to town and park. By adding parking at hotels, you’re getting a two-for-one for that parking space, because that’s adding another space a day visitor can use elsewhere.”

And finally, Bodenhamer said he hopes that a renewed focus from the City Council will help the business community continue to thrive.

“Stability and a spirit of compromise from the City Council would help as well.

Ongoing drama there soaks up a lot of the attention. We’re handling things as they’re coming toward us. We need to take the time to look forward and make proactive plans.”

What he’ll remember and miss about San Juan Capistrano: “I’ll always remember how passionate people are about the town, about protecting the things that are important to them.

Recognizing that passion has been a positive thing for me and has allowed me to see things from the perspective of people I don’t always agree with. I’ve learned over time that they care about the town just as much as I do; they just have a slightly different vision to achieve the things we all want. The people and businesses of San Juan Capistrano truly care about this town.”

“It’s been an amazing seven years. I don’t take for granted how much I’ve been able to wake up excited to get to work every

day. I had the opportunity to work with so many cool people and do things that are important and make a difference. When you walk around downtown and Reata Park, the Northwest Open Space and the barns, it really does motivate you to roll up your sleeves and do your best to help people so the community can continue to prosper and do the things it’s already good at.”

Being named Honorary Man of the Year: “It was truly humbling, and it made me feel great about my time here. It can be a difficult job, stuck in the middle of a lot of politics. Running a chamber is a complicated thing—it’s a small business that you’re running, but your primary goal is not your own business, but the people you’re trying to represent. The ever-changing politics in town are often complicated, so it’s the type of job where you’re basically trying to feel your way through what the best course is all the time. You’re in the thick of it. So to have that moment and have everybody pause and say that you’ve done a good job was great.”

“I’m happy to accept the award, but I can’t get too excited about it, because I was just showing up to my job and doing it to the best of my ability. The award is really a reflection of everybody, the entire business community and our volunteers.

I hope they take pride in that award; the credit belongs to hundreds of people, not just me.”

“I’m honored to have had the privilege to represent such an amazing place. San Juan Music Scene: Glass Radio

T

he three members of Glass Radio gather at guitarist/vocalist Nate Curiel’s San Juan Capistrano apartment. It’s a sunny summer evening, and they’re lobbing inside jokes back and forth, laughing about the origin of their band’s new name, and the fact that Curiel and drummer/vocalist Nick Bishop aren’t really sure if they ever invited bassist Kyle Korby to officially join the band.

“You just kept showing up!” Curiel laughs.

“I might not even be an official band member,” Korby smiles.

Such technicalities don’t really matter for a group like Glass Radio. There’s nothing formal or uptight about the way the three-piece rock band makes music. First and foremost, it’s about having fun.

“I’d say the key component of our live shows is that we’re always trying to have fun, and we want our audience to have fun,” Korby said. “We’ll do crazy stuff to get people engaged.”

Korby described such antics—like that time when they played an Irish bar and Curiel, utilizing his wireless guitar kit, walked to the bar and took a shot of Jameson during his solo.

And then there’s the band’s ongoing challenge—perhaps best described as extreme Pictionary—where instead of a set list, they draw pictures representing each song name and swap lists with each other.

As the show rolls on, each band member is left guessing which one of their tunes’ names could possibly correlate with the crude stick figures drawn by their peers.

“It’s a fun game to see who’s going to mess up first,” Korby said. “It’s something we do to make sure we keep having fun.”

The three musicians, who all grew up in the area, became fast friends when they met and joined forces back in 2013. They instantly bonded over their love of classic

Relay for Life Raises Nearly $84K for Cancer Research

ore than 350 people gathered in San Juan Capistrano’s Sports Park on June 10 for the 14th annual Relay for Life. The free event, which ran from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., gave members of the public a chance to fight back against cancer, celebrate people who have battled cancer and remember loved ones lost. The relay included a survivor breakfast, opening ceremony, games, drawings and prizes, live music and dancing, a luminaria ceremony and a closing ceremony.

John Wohlfiel, Relay for Life organizer and vice president of human resources for local company Fluidmaster, said that as of June 21, the 16 participating teams had raised nearly $84,000. With money still

lthough the California drought is officially over, I’m still getting asked the garden question each week—do we go back to the way we gardened in the past with colored annual flowers and grass?

The answer is pure and simple: no. I know I sound harsh, but we have learned the costs in products, time and resources of choosing and sustaining water-thirsty environments.

Throughout the drought, I noticed that we all became better stewards of our precious resource—water. It took a few of us to get monthly water fine penalties and feel the fire of change, but we made the change for good.

Most importantly, we discovered we live in an arid environment and must plant accordingly. We were introduced to new plants and new species and varieties, and we boasted a bit about our finds and treasures. Neighbors started talking and DIRT THERAPY walking to each other’s

I learned that we are a resilient state; we find goodwill during adversity. One thing is for sure—our droughts will come and go, and we must continue having the mindset to save our water regardless. We need to remember that we are one season away from the next drought. Many of us took classes from nurseries and community outreach groups, we received rebates from water districts and cities to remove our lawns, we heard about the drought and its effect in media and daily news, and we were finally relieved when the rain hit this year.

As I talk to many of the students who frequent our weekend Smart Gardening 101 classes at the Reata Park and Event Center, I am excited to hear over and over the success stories of the homeowners who took a risk and got rid of their lawn.

They found it quite satisfying to get away from the daily weekend maintenance, while also lowering their monthly landscape and water bills.

Some incorporated natural walkways; others planted butterfly, native, perennial or cactus gardens and included cozy sitting areas with water features. They created comfortable spaces to read, relax and daydream.

Doesn’t that sound inviting? They also learned quickly how much money they were saving annually; they didn’t need to have a gardener every week—only about four times a year. They had more money to save for other things like vacation.

My hope is that through experiencing the lean drought years and from the massive media and community education efforts we have gleaned and formed new behaviors and habits addressing sustainability in our gardens. The cyclical drought will return, but we are now better equipped to navigate our landscape and water needs, accepting that California is first and foremost an arid environment.

This is our new normal. Once we accept that fact, we will continue to succeed in our planning and planting stages, creating water-saving masterpieces in our gardens.

Senior Singles Seek Different Sudoku Kinds of Relationships

ost singles who are over 50 that I encounter agree on one thing: they would like to be in a committed relationship. But what they don’t agree on is the kind of a committed relationship.

Some want marriage. Take Ben, 77, a widower, for example. He and his fiancée are getting married in September. He said he can’t wait.

“She is the last woman I will ever love,” Ben said.

This February, my partner Greta and I attended the Dana Point wedding of Chris, 83, and Tina, 77, after the couple had endured a 13-year, long-distance relationship.

Marriage still happens with older singles, but it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

Some older singles are in a long-distance relationship. She lived in England, Chris in San Clemente.

Another example - Trent and Rachelle.

When they met, he lived in Utah, she in southern California. They married and now live in San Diego. Often, long-distance relationships morph into a different type of relationship.

If long-distance relationships don’t grow,

they will often fizzle out.

Then there are committed couples who live together, but don’t plan to remarry.

My partner Greta and I fall under that umbrella. We’ve been together as a couple for 19 years and have lived together for the last 16 of those years. We have no plans to marry.

Now, there is a relatively new category of senior committed couples, the LAT relationship.

LAT is an acronym for “Living Apart Together.”

In 1794, 40 adobes were built to house Mission neophyte families. Some of these adobes lined Los Rios Street, while others faced into the plaza along its east side.

Also known as Casa de Esperanza, it is believed that the first resident of the adobe was Isidro Aguilar, a stone mason who supervised construction of the Great Stone Church but died before its comple-

tion in 1806.

It wasn’t until the 1840s that Don Blas Aguilar purchased Casa de Esperanza and the adjacent adobe, Casa Tejada. He added a long adobe wall, creating a courtyard between the two adobes. The combined Page 32

structures came to be known as “Hacienda Aguilar.” Don Blas Aguilar, who was the last Alcalde of San Juan Capistrano under Mexican rule, then became the first justice of the peace of the town under the United States.

Today, the Blas Aguilar Adobe is owned by the city and houses a museum dedicated to the region’s diverse history. Domingo Belardes is the museum’s curator, a position previously held by his father, David Belardes. Committed to serving the community and educating visitors about San Juan Capistrano’s complex and compelling story, he extends a warm welcome to all in the hopes they will leave with a better understanding of the town’s rich and unique heritage.

The Blas Aguilar Adobe Museum and Acjachemen Cultural Center is open to visitors from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Twins Sign Royce Lewis to Record-Breaking Contract JSerra grad, No. 1 overall pick becomes highestpaid high schooler ever

n June 17, the Minnesota Twins officially welcomed their No. 1 overall draft pick, Royce Lewis, to the organization.

After drafting Lewis with the top pick in June 12’s MLB Draft, the two parties reached an agreement and Lewis signed his first professional contract during a ceremony at Target Field in Minneapolis.

The Twins signed Lewis, who is being represented by super-agent Scott Boras, to a record $6.725 million contract, making him the highest-paid high school player ever.

With Twins’ senior vice president and general manager Thad Levine and chief baseball operator Derek Falvey to his right, and Boras to his left, Lewis signed on the dotted line.

“The day finally came. This is every boy’s dream and it’s been my dream since day one,” Lewis said. “I feel blessed to be in this position and I look forward to developing and having the opportunity to grow and be a part of the Twins organization for a long, long time.”

Lewis’ deal came in below the top overall pick’s suggested $7.77 million slot value.

The move allowed the Twins to spend more

money on other players taken in the draft.

Signing his contract capped off what has been a whirlwind month for Lewis, who recently graduated from JSerra Catholic High School.

He did not know he would be taken No. 1 overall by the Twins on draft day.

He watched the draft with a close group of family and friends and said he was “shocked” and “overwhelmed” when he heard his name called.

The Twins flew Lewis and his family out to Minneapolis days later and had him sign his contract in between a Twins doubleheader.

While he was at Target Field, Lewis got the chance to speak with Twins legend and current manager Paul Molitor. He also spoke privately with Joe Mauer, the Twins All-Star catcher and first baseman.

The Cleveland Indians were in town to play the Twins, and Falvey arranged for Lewis to speak with standout Cleveland shortstop Francisco Lindor, a player Lewis admires.

Lewis was drafted as a shortstop, and said the Twins will give him the opportunity to compete at that position in rookie ball with the organization’s Gulf Coast League affiliate. Lewis officially joined the Fort Myers Miracle on June 19. CD

Skvarna Captures National Collegiate Longboard Title

nder bluebird skies and a playful southern hemisphere swell at Salt Creek, the best scholastic surf teams in the country gathered for the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s Interscholastic National Championships June 17-19.

Over the course of the weekend, the top high school and collegiate teams battled for supremacy of the waves.

San Juan Capistrano’s Kevin Skvarna bested the field in the collegiate longboard division and took home the title.

Skvarna, who was a champion surfer at San Juan Hills High School, was competing for Saddleback College and posted a winning total of 16.63.

“I’m so stoked to take my first NSSA College Longboard National title,” beamed
