The seventh annual Tri to Beat Cancer sprint triathlon, duathlon, and aqua bike will take place on Sunday, August 21st at Sandy Creek Park.

Expecting 600 – 700 participants and 200 volunteers, USA Triathlon, the governing body of the triathlon sport, sanctions this event, heightening the participation of more serious and competitive athletes. Tri to Beat Cancer is presented

Parking

Tri to Beat Cancer Packet Pick-Up: Endurance House: Wednesday, August 17th, 11:00 am-5:00 pm, 11800 Haynes Bridge Rd. Suite 1, Alpharetta, GA 30009

Georgia Cycle Sport: Thursday, August 18th,

3:30-6:30 pm, 1029 Baxter St, Athens, GA 30606

Holiday Inn: Saturday, August 20th, 2:00-5:00 pm, 197 E Broad St, Athens, GA 30601

All race participants, volunteers, and spectators MUST be in Sandy Creek Park by 6:30 AM on Sunday, August 21. The park's entrance/exit gate will be closed for the duration of the race. Do NOT park along Bob Holman Road--it is private property! If you need to leave the park early, tell the front gate parking attendants and they will direct you to park in the early departure parking lot.

All event proceeds benefit local, northeast Georgia cancer patients.

2016 TRI HERO

SARAH MIDDENDORF CAREY That year the news of Wayne's diagnosis brought a new meaning to the race, especially when Wayne came to see John compete. It was so special, I knew I would compete in 2015.

I had always volunteered for Tri to Beat Cancer, witnessing the awe-inspiring energy of the race. Two months before the 2014 Tri, my uncle, Dr. Wayne Middendorf was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma.

Before the diagnosis, my husband, John Carey, had already signed up to compete and I was once again volunteering. That year the news of Wayne's diagnosis brought a new meaning to the race, especially when Wayne came to see John compete. It was so special, I knew I would compete in 2015.

I have a very close-knit extended family, and that next year, my brother, his wife, my cousin, John and I all participated in Tri to Beat Cancer in honor of Wayne.

We declared ourselves "Wayne's Warriors." John even had the initials BBW (Big Bad Wayne) on his shirt! A lot of family came into town to cheer for us, making a weekend of the experience. This year, we will be participating in memory of Wayne, who passed in January, and our Wayne's Warriors crew is now ten people strong! Wayne always enjoyed our witty family group texts, poking fun at each other. We keep up the tradition with solid "trash texting" about the Tri, like who will "crush" everyone, and who may need to wear "floaties" for the swim!

Competing in Tri to Beat Cancer in 2015 was AWESOME! I was really intimidated because it was the first time I'd ever competed in a triathlon, but it was reassuring to see so many competitors of different ages and abilities. It was really all about having fun for an amazing cause!

Preparing for my second Tri to Beat Cancer experience, and thinking about what advice or tips I would give to my beginner self last year, I'm reminded to hydrate the day before and eat a light breakfast the morning of the race. Also, get there early to ensure I have everything organized-- that especially helped me streamline my transition area!

As Tri 2016 quickly approaches, I'm definitely looking most forward to highfiving my kids and all the friends and relatives as I near the finish line! The energy of the whole crowd is so positive and uplifiting! I think I and my entire family plans to keep competing as long as we can. I know my kids and my cousin's children plan to participate once they are old enough. It will be neat to see the next generation get involved, and I know Wayne would be very proud of us for uniting for such a wonderful organization and cause.

SBC Percentage Night

Friday, August 19th Tri Coach Georgia and Chops & Hops are teaming up with Southern Brewing Company to offer a percentage night to TCF supporters!

Join us at Southern Brewing Company on Friday, August 19th for a percentage night to benefit The Cancer Foundation! Tickets are only $10 and TCF will receive 25% of the event proceeds.

There will be two special beers for our percentage night at Southern Brewing Company. One is Tri Coach Reaper Rye, an Imperial Rye IPA, and the other is a small batch Pilsner. Also, thanks to Chops & Hops and Tri Coach Georgia, there is an option for a $20 ticket for beer and food from Chops and Hops.

Included in the $20 option is a commemorative pint glass donated by Tri Coach Georgia with the event date and name.

Don’t forget 25% of all proceeds raised will go directly to The Cancer Foundation!

On Saturday, August 20th, The Cancer Foundation will host Packet Pick-Up from 2:00-5:00 PM at Holiday Inn in downtown Athens.This is where packet pick-up will take place and last minute registrations can be made. Pre-Race Showcase is free to attend. You are also able to shop local fitness stores and try free samples of great products.
