Tri to Beat Cancer Sprint Triathlon is The Cancer Foundation’s signature fundraiser. Begun in 2010, Tri to Beat Cancer raises $95,000-$101,000 for local cancer patients! The 2015 Tri to Beat Cancer Sprint Triathlon will take place at Sandy Creek Park in Athens on Sunday, August 23rd. We expect a minimum of 800 participants, not including spectators and volunteers. USA Triathlon, the governing body of the triathlon sport, sanctions this event heightening the participation of more serious and competitive athletes. There will also be aquabike and duathlon options for those participants who do not want, or are unable, to compete in the triathlon. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact tri2beatcancer@gmail.com. To register as an athlete, visit www.cfnega.org.

For the third year in a row, The Cancer Foundation is excited to announce partnership with Tanger Outlets for their Fit for a Cure 5K! In addition to the popular 5K, this year, Tanger Outlets Center in Commerce, GA is adding a Pink Partini fashion show and auction to the already successful 5K. Tanger Outlets is committed to raising awareness about breast cancer, as well as raising funds for local cancer patients. These dual fundraisers are a great way to bring our community together for a great cause during October—“breast cancer” awareness month. Pink Partini is scheduled for Thursday, October 1 at the Jefferson Civic Center and will feature a silent auction and Tanger fall fashion show. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by contacting Haley Avery at havery@cfnega.org or 706-255-7669. Fit for a Cure 5K is on Saturday, October 17 at Tanger Outlets in Commerce. A WORD FROM THE TRI TO BEAT CANCER PRESENTING SPONSOR Power Partners has been involved with The Cancer Foundation's Tri to Beat Cancer event for the past four years. What drives our passion for this event and for supporting The Foundation? Two reasons: Our own employees’ and our loved ones’ battles with cancer and our value as a company to “Encourage and Serve Daily.” We've personally battled cancer through our own experience, through taking care of our loved ones, and in helping our team members in any way we can. We value what The Cancer Foundation provides. The disease takes a toll not only on the body, but takes a toll financially as well. The financial and logistical support of The Foundation is so important to people struggling to meet those demands while focusing on their treatment. No matter how hard it is to complete a triathlon it pales in comparison to what a cancer patient or their care-givers deal with on a daily bases. We’ve seen what it takes to overcome challenges and to win the race. It takes the support of a community to help alleviate some of those challenges. Power Partners is honored to be a part of this community.
PATIENT PROFILE
DEBRA PEPPERS Debra Peppers began her fight against Stage IV breast cancer with metastasis to her bones in 2012, undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, with chemotherapy still ongoing. Debra's cancer is incurable, though somewhat manageable. In the past three years, Debra has been through a drug trial and various therapies to manage the growth and spread of tumors to her vital organs. “It was so hard to learn that my cancer won’t ever go into remission and that I will have to live in treatment for the rest of my life.” Debra is a patient of Georgia Cancer Specialists in Athens and receives treatment every Tuesday, driving from Winder where she was born, raised, and married for 32 years. Upon her initial diagnosis in 2012, Debra was referred to The Cancer Foundation by Dortheann Metzinger . At the time Debra was fighting her cancer, her husband, Sammy, was fighting his own battle with COPD. Then, earlier this year, Deborah remembered The Cancer Foundation when she found herself again in a time of need. In mid-February, Sammy passed away and within days Debra found out her electricity was set to be disconnected. “I didn’t know how I was going to pay that light bill until I found out The Cancer Foundation was doing it. The bill was paid the same day my application was submitted. Just that fast and it was not complicated at all. I had no idea The Cancer Foundation would be willing to help me again with $500, but [you] did.” At The Cancer Foundation, patients can receive up to $500 per year, with no lifetime limit. The best part about The Cancer Foundation? “Nobody gave me a hard time. My caseworker faxed over the application and I got a call from Stacey the same day saying the bill was paid.”
