The airline Ryanair has announced it will cancel 21 routes to the Canary Islands and lower frequencies of a further 32 in retaliation for what they consider a "breach" of the regional government’s agreement, granting incentives for the airline to increase their operations to and from the Islands.

In a statement the airline announced the cancellation of routes and reduced frequencies to the Canaries

will mean the loss of 1.1 million passengers and the destruction of 1,100 direct jobs on Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife where they operate.

Ryanair pointed out that they had signed an agreement with the Canary Islands Government whereby the latter undertook to "establish an incentive system" guaranteeing "low operating costs at airports" on the islands.

Citing that the autonomous region has not fulfilled its commitment, the airline reduced traffic by 26% to the Canary Islands, which will result in transport numbers falling from 4.35 to 3.2 million passengers a year to the archipelago, according to Ryanair.

These measures will enter into force from this November, which will see Gran Canaria hit hardest with the loss of seven routes, and reduction in frequencies on eight more meaning the loss of 38 weekly flights.

British Embassy warns homeowners to ensure they rent properties in accordance with Spanish law

Homeowners who rent out their properties to holidaymakers are being warned they could face huge fines unless they comply with Spanish law.

The British Embassy has become aware of a number of cases where homeowners have been fined up to €30,000 for letting properties without the correct permits.

The Embassy has today (Monday) published advice for homeowners who rent out their properties or are considering doing so, which can be found on the UKinSpain

The regulations on letting tourist apartments (apartamentos turísticos) and holiday homes (viviendas vacacionales) vary by region. If you are planning on making a financial return by renting out your existing property, or buying one to let, you are recommended to seek independent legal advice and check the local licensing laws with your local town hall (Ayuntamiento).

This is particularly important in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands where the rental of holiday properties on a short-term basis is strictly regulated. The authorities in these areas are cracking down on homeowners who rent out their properties to tourists (particularly through online adverts) without complying with Spanish law.

If you own or are planning to buy an apartment which is part of a Comunidad de Propietarios (Committees of property owners who are responsible for the management of communal areas of apartment buildings/ complexes), you should also check whether there are any rules that prohibit or restrict short-term letting.

Owners who rent out properties on a long-term basis are generally not required to apply for a special licence. However, it is worth seeking professional advice to make sure that you are complying with Spanish legislation and that you are using the correct rental contract.

There are different types of contracts depending on how long the property is being let for, such as arriendos de vivienda which are for a minimum of five years, and arriendos de temporada which are generally for one year or less. You can get copies of these contracts from tobacconists (estancos).

Taxes: Owners of properties should also be aware that whether or not you are resident in Spain, you will need to declare rental income to the Spanish tax authorities. Homeowners may wish to seek advice from a professional tax adviser (asesor/gestor).

Managing a property rental: You may want to consider hiring a Spanish letting agent to assist with finding tenants, drawing up rental contracts and managing the property on your behalf.

Spain every week, and represents nearly a third of the total number of cases around the world. The figures come from the annual British Behaviour Abroad report for the period 1 April 2011 - 31 March 2012.

In the Balearics, the number of reported cases has soared. Over the last two years (since 2009/10), Mallorca has seen a 132% increase in hospitalisations, and Ibiza a 40% rise. Many of these cases involve teenage holidaymakers. Common causes are road accidents, balcony incidents and heart attacks. Meanwhile Malaga has seen a 45% increase over the last year alone. public healthcare insurance.

Annual Ryanair traffic to Gran Canaria will be reduced by 300,000 passengers, from 1.1 million to 800,000 passengers per year.

Vice President of Ryanair, Michael Cawley, said he regretted that the decision of the Canary Islands Government had directly caused the situation meaning that "instead of the 4.4 million passengers” they had expected to carry “and the creation of thousands of jobs directly generated by the increase in passengers" that due to the loss of incentives, the company's traffic will now be reduced by 26% to 3.2 million passengers annually.

Cawley said that passengers and jobs will be lost in the Canary Islands "in favour of other European airports with lower operating costs, where Ryanair will continue to grow."

He also said that "these cuts could be reversed and cancelled, but

There should be no surprise from anyone at how things have turned out. At the end of the day cheap flight companies like Ryanair are rarely, if ever, capable of anything more than cheap politics, penny pinching tactics and more often than not blows as low as their prices. They care little about the people they claim to serve.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no snob, and have benefited along with millions of others from the rise of low cost air fares. The game is simple; don't ask me to expect anything more than a seat bathed in a fluorescent jaundice glow, packed among others who also could not really afford to fly the distance any other way and I won't ask how on earth you managed to provide one of the most fuel intensive, environment wrecking, long distance forms of transport for less than a rubbery steak dinner at a down at heel London cafe (drinks extra and certainly over priced).

We have accepted Mr. O'leary's organisation, trained in fascism, degradation and quality depravation, under the illusion that we deserve to fly to exotic destinations for next to no money and on the basis of his overly touted self-made image as the protector of our consumer rights. But the simple fact is, just, like the global economy in which he flourished, that it is simply not a sustainable relationship. The Canary Islands government can ill afford such partnerships when key public sector workers are being hit with redundancies and pay cuts. Over the last decade their pursuit of low cost air travellers, all inclusive budget package tourists and pandering to offshore tour operators have reaped them falsely inflated numbers and a dying local economy.

Wake up Canaries, you are worth a hell of a lot more than O'Leary and his gang can ever really deliver. What's more, the recent governmental focus on luxury accommodation hardly complements preferential subsidies to tinkering airlines who deliver little more than a pasty white consumer already fleeced, either at origin or on the flight over, for the little they were worth to start with and then deposited on the island for two weeks of sun burn and gruel at their all-inclusive ghettotel. I mean just look at where these flights have been cut from and you may get a sense of their overall importance to these islands or indeed to the high minded Mr. Micky O. Let's not pander to his kind. ~Timon

More than 2500â‚Ź raised and still counting...

Once again the English speaking community have got together to do something exraordinary in support of Canarian Breast Cancer Association ACCM. The last saturday in July saw more than a hundred people join to cheer and holler for the walkers of Puerto Rico all taking part in the sponsored walk event organised by Kim Higgins of well known and loved venue The Pub in the Puerto Rico Centro Comercial.

The idea was a simple one: get as many people together as possible to find sponsorship for a group jaunt from the main British resident town on the south of Gran Canaria down to one of the most popular beaches In true Brit charity style many people dressed up in attention grabbing costumes to walk the 8 and a half km course along the costal path from Puerto Rico to Amadores beach and back again. Fun and frivolity was the order of the day with several Canarians and other spanish speakers joining to complete what for some was

an extraordinary journey on foot to show solidarity for all those affected by this awful desease.

Marisa Herera, the charity's founder and various others also turned up at the event to lend their support and their thanks for the efforts of this fun loving bunch who had decided to take it upon themselves to help raise money for one of the most important charity groups anywhere in The Canary Islands.

After the walk Kim, along with trusty sidekick Graham, announced that the 2000â‚Ź target had been exceeded during the event, which meant of course that the editor of this publication is going to have to make good on his promise to walk from Puerto Rico across the mountain of Gran Canaria to the iconic Roque Nublo and then down the other side to Las Palmas. More about that in the next edition, but rest assured he will be coming round looking for sponsorship, so prepare yourself to dig deeply.

An amazing day and a phenominal result meaning that this years campaing is off to

a roaring start, thanks yet again to that community minded bunch down in Puerto Rico. These are the people who epitomise the true giving nature of those brits who have chosen to make a life for themselves in paradise, and to help those who need it most. The Scandinavian community too was represented by our Nordic editorial team who broke with their more usual swedish conservative manner to support the cause - Well done Kim and everyone who joined in on the day. Watch out for the editor who has gone to ground while he trains for his Long Walk to Las Palmas on Sept 29th

House Prices Down

House prices in The Canaries fell in the second quarter, the fall nationally was 11.5%, which contrasts with a fall of 9.2% in the previous quarter, according to the latest Tinsa report on local housing markets.

Most territories and provinces followed this downward trend, the most prominent decline being recorded in La Rioja, with a 22.6% fall in prices returning this Community to 2003 levels. Catalonia followed (-18%), then Aragon (-16.3%), Valencia (-14%), Castilla-La Mancha (-13.8%) and Madrid (-13.8%).

In line with the national average stood Castilla y León (-11.8%), Andalusia (-11.6%), Navarra (-11.5%), Murcia (-10.8%), The Canary Islands (-10,6%) and the Balearic Islands (-10.5%).

Completing the list were Extremadura (-10.1%), Galicia (-6.2%), Asturias (-5.2%), Ceuta (-4%), Cantabria (-3.6%) and Melilla (- 3.3%).

Rents also down

The rents of beachfront apartments have fallen across the Spanish coasts by between 10 and

40 percent this summer, according to a report

by TecniTasa.

The appraisal company notes that the Valencia, region which has suffered the greatest drop in prices, is down 40%, ahead of other destinations such as The Canary Isalnds (-30%), Andalusia (-25%) and Murcia (-25%).

Other regions such as Galicia, Catalonia, Cantabria and the Balearic Islands have declined by 20%, while the fall in prices has been lower in Asturias and the Basque Country (-10%).

The places in mainland Spain where you can find cheapest rents are Grao Castellón (Castellón), where you can find apartments of 72 square meters for 600 euros per month, ie less than 9 euros per square metre per month which compares with Lugo (10 euros), Oliva, Valencia (11 euros) and Zapillo in Almeria (11 euros per sq metre).

By contrast, the most expensive destinations are in the Playa del Sardinero (Santander), with an average of 90 euros per square meter per month, ahead of San Sebastián (73.3 euros) or Sitges, Barcelona (at 55 euros)

There are two models of Twizy, 45 which has a speed limit of 45km/h and can be driven on a bike licence by anyone over 15 years old, but is not permitted on the autovia and the 80 which requires a driving licence has a top speed of 80 km/h and is permitted on the autovia. I tried out the model 80.

To anyone who is used to driving an automatic car the concept of the Twizy will not come as so much of a culture shock, but if like myself you are used to a manual gearbox, driving the Twizy calls for a complete concept change. Firstly the doors open upwards in the style of a Delorean. The Twizy is a two seater with the passenger sitting behind the driver, there is a normal seatbelt and there is also a strap for your free shoulder giving the feeling that you are strapped into a Recaro racing seat. There are no gears, there are three buttons, forward, neutral and reverse.

computerised dashboard a green light marks go, there is a battery image telling you how much charge the battery has and another bar indicator telling you at any given time how much power you are using. The space age styling of the Twizy is certainly a head turner and provoked comments from other drivers whilst waiting at traffic lights.

No sooner had I left the showroom when I got to a long steep slope, where the silence of the motor is replaced by a whine reminiscent of Erny driving the fastest milkcart in the west as the motor had to really work, we got to the flat at the top of the hill the and whining disappeared. This is of the first electric vehicles that does not need a special charger and can be just plugged into the mains at home and according to the dealer costs around 1euro to fully charge, which should be good for about 100km.

Two large wing mirrors give good all round vision to make up for the lack of a rear view mirror and there is the option of a beeper to warn people when you are reversing as the silence of the vehicle could catch some unawares. When you buy a Twizy part of the deal is that the battery is not yours but on rent at around 50euros a month, which covers all servicing etc and as it is a rental if there is any problem you just change it for another. At around 8,000euros for the model 80 many will think twice, but at 100 km/euro it starts to pay for itself from day one. A lean green city machine.

Residencia applications in July

8000 residence certificates were issued during July leading to complaints about the ineffeciency of the administrative system.

Sterling at 4-year high

It was another difficult month for the Euro. In early July it touched a two-year low against the US dollar and came close to the 12-year low against the yen that it had established a month earlier. At the same time the Euro at last broke below the psychologically-important 80p barrier, allowing sterling/euro to reach its highest level since October 2008. Since then the single currency has halted its retreat. It is not clear whether it has come to a stop because investors are reappraising their outlook or simply because of the seasonal torpor that afflicts financial markets during the summer.

If the problems facing the Euro are not identical to those of recent months, then they are not a whole lot different. Greece has a new government, one which is pledged to keeping the country in the Euro zone and towing the austerity line, but the pro-euro coalition has yet to come up with a workable idea to achieve the economic growth necessary to balance the budget.

The best guess is that the Greek economy will shrink by between 6% and 7% this year and it is not difficult to find economists who predict that Greece will eventually have no alternative but to leave the single currency.

Spain has negotiated a €30bn bailout-lite package to help troubled banks, with outline permission to triple that amount if necessary. EU Commission President Herman Van Rompuy described as a "breakthrough" the German Chancellor's agreement to allow the money to be channelled direct to the banks rather than going via the Madrid government. Investors tended to agree with him at the time (in late June) but have become sceptical at the subsequent lack of progress. Spain's sovereign bonds are no more popular with non-Spanish investors today than they were a couple of months ago. In mid-

July the government raised €3bn of two-to seven-year debt but only by paying 6.7% for the longer maturity.

The French President and the Spanish Prime Minister have both announced that more savings need to be made to bring their budget deficits below the 3.5% required by the fiscal compact.

For Spain the extra cuts will amount to €65bn, not a helpful development with a quarter of the workforce unemployed. It is still by no means certain that Spain will be able to manage without the full-fat EU bailout that Sr Rajoy is so keen to avoid.

Another possible obstacle to a comprehensive solution to Euroland's sovereign debt crisis is the German constitutional court, which has the last word on whether or not government policies are permissible. It will not be until mid-September that the court publishes its opinion on Germany's participation in the European Stability Mechanism upon which much of the EU's strategy depends.

The International Monetary Fund has been stirring the pot too. In its latest comment it described the euro zone situation as "critical" and advised the European Central Bank to push ahead with "unconventional measures" to provide liquidity. For good measure, the IMF described the Euro as overvalued.

Some would say the same about the Pound, at least as far as its relationship with the Euro is concerned. Sterling is within three cents of its peak in autumn 2008 and there can be little doubt that, if it gets that far, there will be a longish queue of investors, firms and expats keen to buy the cheapest euros they will have seen in nearly four years.

Statistical evidence of UK economic activity has been chequered. Purchasing managers' index readings for June

indicated continuing expansion in Britain's manufacturing and services sectors but there is a suspicion that the figures for second quarter gross domestic product will be negative.

Inflation has come back into line at 2.4%, further narrowing but still not closing - the gap with earnings, which rose by 1.5%.

Unemployment fell from 8.2% to 8.1% while, simultaneously, the number of people claiming job seeker's allowance went up.

Sterling has had a good run in the last 12 months, strengthening by 16% against the Euro. It has made back half the loss it incurred between August 2007 and December 2008.

It is impossible to imagine it continuing at that upward pace for another 12 months. Anyone with Euros to buy should give serious consideration to covering part of their requirement at current levels.

with Mr Draghi saying the euro project is irreversible as too much time has been spent on the project . The implication here of course was that The ECB would find some way of supporting governments either

by buying bonds (keeping yields down) or maybe looking to increase bailout packages however as in the past no real activity was undertaken and the euro started a rollercoaster of a ride against the dollar and the pound. With consumer confidence also dipping and readings of PMI’s unchanged in July then the euro appeared to need some help. All eyes were focussed on the ECB monthly meeting for a possible interest rate reduction or a round of QE and neither happened, fortunately on a positive note we hear that the ECB did not buy any government bonds of late so it means that investors are still reasonably happy.

News from the UK actually helped the euro as we saw the economy slip further into recession during Q2 and is around 5% lower than before the crisis started so all is not good back home. The latest manufacturing statistics also were poor showing a recovery is further away than hoped.

Now it was the turn of The BOE and they also held interest rates and made no attempt at a further round of QE, preferring instead to wait until the government’s “ funding for lending scheme” has on the economy. Just to add to the

gloom in the UK, house prices fell in July bringing the annual change to a minus 2.6%, add this to a lower than expected number of mortgage approvals and the market will probably taking sometime to recover.

In the US, house prices increased for the 4th month in a row and with the latest set of figures showing the number of people going back to work, consumer confidence may just be on the up. No doubt there will be tough times ahead however markets do like confidence.

Finally China it seems is managing to hold its own as we hear that the manufacturing sector improved in July and rose to its highest for 5 months so they will be keen to see a recovery in the eurozone for demand to continue to rise.

Cambios en la forma de acreditar la residencia para acceder a la bonificación al transporte aéreo de residentes Changes in the way to prove your residence to access the bonus air transport of residents For all flights from September 1, 2012, residents of non-peninsular territories wishing to receive the bonus must prove residency by the following documents: Spanish citizens: certificate of residence issued by the city hall, accompanied by the national identity card as ID. For Spanish citizens under 14 who do not have ID, you only need to submit the certificate of residence.

Foreign nationals: a certificate of residence, accompanied by the national identity card passport as ID. These documents will only be effective for the purpose of accreditation of residence whilst still within the valid dates marked on the document.

FAQs How are residents affected in nonpeninsular territories by the changes to residence accreditation?

In the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands and Ceuta and Melilla regions residents must have a registration certificate issued by the municipality in which they reside, as laid out in Annex I of Royal Decree 1313/2001 (the certificate called "travel") to be eligible for subsidised air travel tickets from September 1, 2012.

Therefore, those passengers who do not already have this certificate should go to their town hall, or use electronic means made available by the municipality to apply for one.

Is a new certificate required for each and every flight?

The subsidies do not require you to send the certificate anywhere, only that you show it, so it is not necessary to obtain a certificate each time you fly. The certificate will be valid for six months, so that it can be used on all trips made during that period.

Who benefits from this?

There are no changes. The reductions in rates of regular air transport services apply to Spanish citizens and those from other

Member States of the European Union (as well as those from other States that have signed the Agreement on the European Economic Area, and Switzerland) who are entered on the municipal register within any municipality of the Autonomous Regions of The Balearics and the Canary Islands or the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla.

Does this change the way you should buy tickets? You can continue to buy online?

There are no changes. Passengers can still buy their tickets as they did before and will continue to benefit from the 50% discount on airfare at the time of purchase.

Can boarding be denied if you do not have your ID? Again no changes. Spanish citizens must be identified with their national identity card to qualify for this grant. Simply showing a driver's license or passport is not sufficient.

Meanwhile, foreign citizens must carry their passport as identification.

Can they deny boarding if I do not bring the certificate?

Effective from September 1st , travellers must make sure they carry the certificate and identification documents indicated. If you cannot prove residence or identity, you cannot fly with the subsidised ticket purchased.

For tickets purchased before September 1st must residency be proved with the certificate?

For all trips made from September 1st you will require proof of residence with the certificate of the municipality, regardless of the date you bought it. If you have acquired a ticket where the return is after September 1st, you will need to prove residence with the certificate for your return flight.

Can no one check that I qualify for the subsidy by computer?

The Ministry of Development, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and Public Administration, is working on a telematic system to confirm each citizen is eligible for the grant before issuing the ticket and thereby avoiding the citizen having to provide a physical certificate from the City Hall. This is expected to be launched in coming months.

Me pueden denegar el embarque si no llevo el DNI? De nuevo no hay cambios. Los ciudadanos españoles deben identificarse con el DNI para poder beneficiarse de esta subvención. En este caso no es válido ni el carnet de conducir ni el pasaporte. Por su parte, los ciudadanos extranjeros, deben identificarse con su DNI o pasaporte.

Me pueden denegar el embarque si no llevo el certificado?

A partir del 1 de septiembre, asegúrese de viajar con su certificado y los documentos identificativos indicados. Si no puede acreditar su residencia o su identidad, no podrá volar con el billete que ha adquirido.

Para billetes adquiridos antes del 1 de septiembre es necesario acreditar la residencia con el certificado?

Para todos los viajes que se realicen a partir de 1 de septiembre será necesario acreditar la residencia con el certificado del ayuntamiento, sea cual sea la fecha de emisión del billete. Se ha adquirido un billete de ida y la vuelta se realiza después del 1 de septiembre, será necesario acreditar a la vuelta la residencia con el certificado.

No se podría comprobar informáticamente que cumplo los requisitos para ser beneficiario de la subvención?

El ministerio de Fomento, en colaboración con el Ministerio de Hacienda y Administraciones Públicas, está trabajando en un sistema telemático que permite confirmar que el ciudadano cumple los requisitos para acceder a esta subvención antes de que se emita el billete y evitar así que el ciudadano deba aportar el certificado del ayuntamiento.

Se pondrá en marcha durante los próximos meses.

A Letter from George

A few days ago, I received a letter from an elderly reader, who has occasionally written to me over the years, either to congratulate or to disagree with one of my ‘Twitters’. Although I have never met George, I feel that I know him, as he has told me quite a lot about his life as an expat in Spain, and much of it has been very interesting and, on occasions, very helpful. I had suspected for some time that George was a habitual complainer and one of the “my glass is half full brigade�. Still, it takes all sorts to make an expat world, but I find that a naturally positive outlook is always the best advice for would-be expats.

George, who originated from Preston, had lived and worked in Spain for many years. As is the case with many expats, George had assumed that Spain would be his home for life. However, suddenly, he had decided to return to the UK for health reasons, as well as intending to resume contact with an ever-diminishing group of family and friends, whom he began to miss even more as he grew older.

The return to the UK was a mistake, and George quickly became disenchanted with the weather, which meant that he had to spend much of his day in a small, cold and expensive apartment. This, together with the realisation that an adequate pension that had meant a comfortable life in Spain would now hardly pay the essential bills, led George to realise that he had made a grave mistake. Although he had done his homework thoroughly before moving to Spain some thirty years earlier, he had failed to complete this process in reverse. He was totally unprepared for the many changes that he had to face living in what now seemed a foreign country, and not the “return home� that he had expected.

As George was getting older, he needed his home to be warm, and his first gas bill came as a tremendous shock. He also quickly realised that after living for many years in Spain, his life in the UK, family and friends had moved on.

Some had died, others had moved away, and those who had previously kept in contact a few times a year were busy with their own hectic lives, and they had little time left for George. It was not the homecoming that he had expected, and he began to long for his home, climate and life in Spain.

It was a sad letter, and there were points that helped me to understand some of the many issues that many expats face if they decide to make the return trip to their countries of origin.

George went on to say that he was considering returning to Spain once again; after six months he already had enough of the UK, and this time he was considering moving to Gran

Canaria. He identified the wonderful climate as the main reason, and would I help him to find somewhere suitable to live?

George then went on to tell me that he didn't want to live on either the east or the west coasts of the island. He was opposed to the west of the island, because of the “heavy Atlantic rain� and the strong winds on the east coast. He was also totally opposed to living in “the fleshpots of the south�, because he loathed the tourist industry, and wanted to live well away from tourist beaches and other tourist centres. As George also suffers badly from travel sickness, he would not wish to live anywhere that involved a journey up a twisting mountain road!

I was now wondering exactly where I could suggest as a new home for George. I briefly considered Las Palmas, but realised that based on other correspondence, George didn't like cities either. Residents of Gran Canaria, and visitors who know the island well, will by now recognise my dilemma. I wanted to be helpful, but other than Galdar or maybe, Sardina on the north coast, there really was nowhere in Gran Canaria for George to live. Gran Canaria is often called a continent in miniature�, and with very good reason, yet I could suggest nowhere really suitable for George.

If any readers do have (polite) suggestions of where they think George would be happy, do please let me know. However, I also suspect that if I did suggest anywhere, George would be the kind of person who would complain for years, and blame me for the suggestion! I give up! I have come to the conclusion that I will suggest that George moves to Tenerife, and let the good people of Tenerife deal with the problem.

¿Bueno or bien?

Many people mix these up. Bueno and malo (good and bad) are adjectives, and so describe nouns or things: la comida es buena (the food is good); pero el servicio es malo (but the service is bad). We also use adjectives for impersonal expressions: fue bueno ver/te (it was good to see you); es malo mentir (it´s bad to lie).

Bien and mal (well and badly) are adverbs, which means they describe verbs or actions: bailo bien pero canto mal (I dance well but I sing badly). It´s confusing because we say estoy bien (I´m well/fine/ okay) or está bien (it´s okay/alright). So bien can also mean these things. However, we are still describing the verb ‘estar’ (to be, or how we feel).

To avoid mixing them up, remember ‘good’ by thinking of GOOD DAY (Buenos Días) and ‘well’ by thinking of ¿Cómo estás? Estoy bien. (How are you? I’m well).

¿Posible o posiblemente?

I often hear pigeon-Spanish like: posible voy mañana (possible I´ll go tomorrow). Of course we mean to say possibly. A natural error as they sound similar, but if you want to form the equivalent of an English word that ends in –ly, you need to add ‘mente’ to the adjective: Possible/posiblemente (possible/possibly); triste/ tristemente (sad/sadly); probable/probablemente (probable/probably). The one most people remember best is ‘normally’: normalmente.

¿Depende o dependiente?

¿Poco or pequeño?

Many people mix up nombre (name or noun) with número (number) as they sound similar: ¿Cuál es tu nombre? (what´s your name?) but ¿cuál es tu número?

(What´s your number?). Note that it´s more common to ask: ¿Cómo te llamas? (‘How do you call yourself’, from the verb LLAMAR: to call).

¿Un, uno or una?

The number one can be uno or una – we use the masculine with ‘o’ for general stuff (uno, dos, tres – 1,2,3) and change it to the ‘a’ when describing something feminine: necesito UNA hora más – I need one hour more. However, whether the meaning is ‘one’, or ‘a/an’, we ALWAYS drop the ‘o’ before a noun, so it´s un momento, por favor (NOT uno momento).

Similarly, we drop the ‘o’ on most adjectives if they appear BEFORE the noun (most go after, but exceptions include really common words like good and bad): e.g. un buen hombre (NOT un bueno hombre) or un mal día (a bad day). It´s also fine to say un hombre bueno/un día malo. Similarly, we say el primer día (the first day) but la primera planta (the first floor).

¡¿Caja or caca?!

Mispronouncing a word slightly can also cause confusion. One student needed to practice Spanish for her job in a shoe shop, but had trouble pronouncing the word ‘box’: caja (CA-hah), so what she said while we practiced sounded like caca (crap): “Madam, would you like to keep the crap?” Hilarious. Other commonly mispronounced words include: aceptar (as-sep-tar, NOT ak-sept-ar, to accept), practicar (prac-tee-car, NOT prac-tee-sar) and farmacia (far-MA-seeya, NOT farma-

Easily confused as both mean ‘little’. However, un poco is a noun or thing, meaning a little or a bit, while pequeño is an adjective (una casa pequeña: a little house). Common mistakes in Spanish As a Spanish teacher, it´s interesting to note the type of mistakes English-speakers make when speaking another language, usually by translating word-for-word instead of saying things the way locals would. Here are some common pitfalls to avoid:

¿Hablo or habló?

It´s common to ‘push down’ on the wrong syllable of a word which sometimes changes its meaning. This happens a lot with verbs ending in ‘ar’. For example, hablo (AA-bloh) means ‘I speak’ (present tense) but if you accidentally emphasise the end: (aa-BLOH) you´re saying he/she spoke (past tense), written as habló, because the accent tells us which letter to stress. The same goes for verbs like pagar and comprar (to pay/to buy): pago/compro (PA-goh, COM-proh: I pay, I buy) and pagó, compró (he/she paid, and he/she bought).

We have previously looked at shipping the entire contents of your household to or from these islands by container, however the fact is that not everyone needs a whole container.

Many people arrive here with everything they own under the illusion that this will be their last big move, only to find that it wasn't quite what they expected or worse still that they have completely miscalculated and end up unable to make ends meet. Over the last five years in particular the problem as been acute. Those who have arrived with a container filled with furniture, car and electronic goods find that in leaving they just do not want or need or are simply unable to move everything back again and so they leave with little more than just their most personal items, having sold the car, given the furniture away and wanting to return home with just a few boxes of things.

The postal service was once a viable alternative to shipping, however with ever tighter controls on limits of weight and dimensions it has for most become far too expensive. Booking space within a container is easy to organise and is usually paid for by volume meaning that heavy items are no problem as weight will not be an issue. In 2001 it cost about 30€ to send a 20Kg box to mainland Europe by post now it is more like 85€ meaning that the cost of sending 20 boxes could as much as 1600€. Compare that to a cost of 650€ to ship 1 cubic metre by container, enough for about the same amount of boxes, and with no limit to the weight and the economics are obvious. What's more, it is the first cubic metre that is always the most expensive, due to the fixed costs involved. The more space you need the more economical it becomes, with 2.5 cubic metres costing just

over 1000€ and 5 cubic meters little more than 1600€ it is not difficult to see why this is the best option by far.

Shipping without weight restrictions ultimately gives you the freedom to choose what you want ot take with you, whether you are coming or going, it's all about volume. There is no point to trying to sell a relatively new washing machine as you will never get the value back, and you will more than like need one where ever you are going, so it makes much more sense to bring your one with you if it is in working order.

Getting a proper, professional shipping company involved is by far the best way to get the job done right. And most of the time trying to beat their price down is not really going to help you as most of the costs they quote will be fixed.

An honest margin on top of the basic costs is what they will have calculated already and so anyone who says they can do it significantly cheaper either isn't offering the same service or there is something wrong along the way.

A professional company should be able to pick your items up directly from you, after doing a full inventory, store them for as long as is necessary and then ensure that they are correctly accounted for and packed for shipment, that they reach their destination and are delivered to your door in good shape. Significantly lower prices usually mean the service being offered is not the same one. As stated in previous articles if the price is significantly different then you are likely to be paying for a significantly different service. If you are going to compare, make sure you compare thoroughly as mistakes can be costly and cause you unnecessary headaches.

The Yumbo centre in Playa del Ingles is infamous for certain types of bar and club. Bar owners have cultivated a, shall we say, particular crowd. Unfortunately there are quite a few establishments who offer little more than cheap booze and a few dark corners (for some that is all that is required); however there are three or four places that of late have looked to give their clients something a little different, out of the ordinary and, well, a cut above the rest.

When asked to describe his venue, bar owner Phil says simply "it is a lounge club without walls", he is of course referring to one of the venue's most visible attributes, namely that from its crow's nest position, above the hot steamy Bunker bar, visitors are afforded a unique view of the Yumbo in the round as the open air terrace has nothing to block the colourful spectacle of this party mecca in full swing except the glass panels that surround its elegant furnishings in what is fast becoming the de rigueur pre-club meeting and moving space on the south of the island.

Whether it is the handholding eye gazing of the candy pink terrace eatery Parrots, the camp clutch and flirt of old favourite Wunderbar, or the voyeurs pleasure of being able to peek directly in to the glamorous working boudoirs of the first floor performing drags, your average people-watcher will be in seventh heaven at the glittering swirl that surrounds Harem. However, it is in fact the extraordinary mixes of the high energy dancing DJ, who so clearly loves her work, combined with the relaxed culture of fun evident from the staff inside that will keep you most thoroughly entertained.

Mixologist Marius is not only professional but passionate about ensuring that those who visit Harem feel comfortable about letting their hair down, whether it is one of the snug white sofas they seek, a delicious cocktail, tasty, well balanced and performed to perfection, or if they just want to dance the night away to the DJs eclectic mix of classic pop, electro, dance and groove; visitors are unobtrusively let know that this place is designed for their night out and isn't trying to be anything more than a chic canvas on which they can paint their night in their own colours. Clients are even encouraged to suggest the music they would like to hear.

And as for the lack of walls or boundaries, you will find that the crowd is neither gay, nor straight, nor singles nor couples but, like Marius's creations, a sumptuously colourful mix of extraordinary flavours, well presented in a high energy package with grace and attention to detail that will ensure consistent repeat custom for many year's to come from anyone lucky enough to discover it.

10 Wedding Day Don'ts 1. Don’t eat or drink food and beverages that stain your teeth on your wedding day.

Avoid any teeth staining food and drinks such as red wine and red berries. You don’t want the stains ruining your pearly whites on your wedding day photos.

2. Don’t tan or spray tan.

Although many of us love a sun kissed glow to our face and body, having a very dark tan can look unnatural on wedding photos. Even worse is burnt or post burnt peeling skin or unsightly white strap marks.

Spray tans are also a very precarious arena to enter into for a wedding day look. Of course it all depends on your taste, but remember, a spray tan gone wrong is very hard to fix.

If you’re looking for that all over face and body glow, why not try daily body moisturizers with subtle gradual self-tanners such as Dove.

3. Don’t change your skin-care program, medication routine or washing detergent etc; less than 8 weeks before the wedding.

You don’t know how your skin is going to react to new treatments, so avoid any type of changes to your body routine in the months leading up to the big day.

4. Don’t have any beauty treatments within 1 week before the wedding.

Eye brow waxing, facials, teeth whitening, haircuts or colors and any other similar beauty treatments should all be done at least 1 week before the wedding to give you time to correct any minor mishaps.

5. Don’t ingest salt (sodium) in the days before the wedding.

Sodium holds 50 times its weight in water so avoid foods with lots of sodium such as salty meats, dressings or sauces at least

7 days before the wedding. Also avoid adding salt to your food.

You could drop around 1 to 2 kilos with this small change in your diet.

6. Don’t wear a bra with straps the morning of your wedding.

Avoid the pink indents on your skin by wearing loose clothing and a strapless bra or even no bra at all, the morning of the wedding.

7. Don’t forget to drink lots of water!

Drinks lots of water weeks before the big day to keep your skin clear and glowing. On the day, ensure that you drink lots of water between each alcoholic drink to avoid getting too tipsy!

8. Don’t forget your beauty SOS kit.

Ensure you have to hand while you’re getting ready some doublesided sticky tape, different sized safety pins, packet of tissues, a small sewing kit, small scissors, a bleach pen, blotting papers, chewing gum or mints, razor, plasters, tampons, deodorant, nail polish remover, hair spray, nail clipper, emery board, clear nail polish, makeup remover wipes, gel foot cushions, and anything else you feel you may need on the day.

You probably have most of what you need at home, but buy in what you don’t. It won’t go to waste even if you don’t use it on the day and it may even save a wedding day disaster and the stress which goes along with it.

9. Don’t forget to touch up your make-up.

Let your hair down and have a great time by all means, but don’t forget to take moments out for yourself to head to the bathroom and touch up your make-up. There will be lots of pictures taken of you all day and way on into the evening and you want to look your best.

10. Don’t forget to practice how to wipe away those tear correctly!

Avoid the tears from running down your face and washing away your beautiful make up by pressing a tissue into the tear duct of each eye and let the tears roll into it.

This precious two year old girl is terrified of humans. By the time TARA rescued her, life had been such a horrific experience as to potentially warp her beyond rehabilitation. Migrating Pets The creation of the European Union continues to have its supporters and detractors.

Regarding animal welfare, the concept of a centralised government foretold the possibility of consistency and clarity between member countries in what had heretofore been a series of often contradictory domesticated animal laws and flaws.

Often pet owners desire to take their beloved pawed pals along for European holidays. Keeping one’s pet by your side for some is important. It is true for many of our snowbirds with residencies in their country of origin and another in Paradise – enjoying the original concept of timesharing – spending the warm weather months up north, and as the temperature chills and the sun abates, fleeing to Paradise where the climate is always inviting. The varying laws regarding the planned migration of family pets from locale to locale in multiple countries can be confusing. Plus laws are changing all the time and staying current is a challenge.

From the first day of 2012, Great Britain no longer requires a six month quarantine before dogs and cats can enter their borders.

This is a most welcome change that was long overdue. The pet and its human family no longer suffer from a long separation usually exacerbated by solitary confinement in kennel conditions.

This unnecessary procedure not only caused the pain of missing companionship. The inhumane process too often resulted in the pet’s demise – literally death from a broken heart. Older dogs and cats in particular struggled to survive the ordeal. There is no longer any quarantine requirement in Europe outside of Ireland. That remaining travesty has legislation pending to right the wrong.

Also, good news: Great Britain and Norway no longer require blood tests to confirm the absence of rabies – an antiquated law that with today’s medical advances has

little justification.

Unfortunately, the only European country still requiring a blood test to prove the absence of rabies as well as the absurd sixth month quarantine is Ireland. Nevertheless, the law is the law – nonsensical or otherwise. Unfortunately, in Gran Canaria this necessitates a blood sample to be extracted and shipped to the peninsula where more sophisticated medical laboratories are available and the required analysis can be carried out. The cost is at least one 100 EUROS and can delay migration by 60 days or more PLUS the additional six month quarantine AFTER the blood test is confirmed negative.

Throughout the rest of Europe, the procedure is simplified. The rules are straight forward and are the same for felines and canines.

To prepare our pets for migration to Europe outside of Spain, the dog or cat must: be micro-chipped. Zoocan is the Canarian system and is recognised and accessible throughout the European Community; possess a European Community Passport, a blue book which documents the micro-chip details and health records; be inoculated within 30 days of migration against exterior and interior pests (worms, tics, fleas, etc.); be immunised against rabies within the past 12 months, but not less than 21-30 days (depending on the country) prior to authorised migration; possess a Certification of Health from an authorised veterinarian dated not more than 2-3 days prior to migration.

In addition, TARA recommends that canines be tested for filarial (heartworm).

Heartworm is present at epidemic levels in Gran Canaria. If the dog tests positive, then a relatively long cure is undertaken before the migration should be authorised.

TARA also recommends canines be inoculated annually against distemper and provided with a yearly booster shot which protects against other prevalent and preventable canine illnesses.

In Gran Canaria there are two deadly feline diseases which are highly contagious and without cure. Feline AIDS and Leukaemia can be tested for with a single drop of blood. The result is seen in 10 minutes. If the cat tests positive for either disease, exposure to other cats should be prevented.

Costs for pet migration which include medical requirements, a transportation cage approved by the IATA (International Aviation Transportation Agency), the flight (if air is the chosen mode of transportation), and agency fees (in some countries) can vary dramatically – from veterinarian clinics to pet shops to airlines to customs agents. TARA coordinates the migration of hundreds of pets every year and can guide the pet owner along a reliable, comparatively inexpensive pathway. .

Accentuate the positive...

Beatle Sir Paul McCartney turned 70 in June this year. His 2012 collection of American Standards includes the song ‘Ac-cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive’ ...written in 1944 when he was just two! The first lines “Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative, latch on to the affirmative,don’t mess with Mister In-Between” have been a maxim for many a life ever since it was first recorded.

As a relatively young teacher/manager - although they were all academically sound - the negative behaviour of many people I worked with, or their settling for a Mr In-between attitude... both staff and trainees ...was one of the problems with which I constantly struggled. They showed lots of ‘ nouse’ but little strength of character. Those who dare suggest ways to “get positive” were told to ‘get real’ and labelled incurable zealots. It turns out I wasn’t alone in my struggles. A recent article in an educational magazine by a secondary school teacher asserts “The pursuit of academic knowledge ought to be only half the reason we send our children to school” Okay... so what’s the other half?

Just a couple of weeks ago, it was announced that the highest number of state school teachers since the 1990s took early retirement last year, cited indiscipline as one of the main reasons –lack of self- discipline really just being a manifestation of what happens when character strengths and learning habits are not developed sufficiently.

We Brits don’t often take kindly to advice from America; but it appears that something extraordinary is taking place in their education system. Each year thousands of school children from poor, inner city neighbourhoods are graduating from a ‘Knowledge is Power Programme’ with results that are not only excellent compared to other schools in those areas, but better than most results nationally! The main difference in these KIPP schools is strong focus on the development of character. Skills like self-control, grit, curiosity and social intelligence are taught. The positive teaching plan does not just embrace an academic content, but also encourages development of intellectual virtues - things like wisdom, courage, fairness and “love of truth”.

“Perhaps developing and accentuating the positives of these “character strengths”, will give tools for living which may hold the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and demographic difference

that seems to be occurring in the UK” says our educationalist..

I asked a teacher friend his opinion of all this. He said that the current approach towards anything to do with character development in many schools is simply to focus on the “negatives” –no praise when things go right, but when something goes wrong, students are punished with detentions, demerits and referrals. (How well I remember that one from my own old alma mater!) All this in a climate of all time high absenteeism and truancy in the UK where as many as 64,000 pupils a day skip school, while 40 per cent of teachers report spending more than half of their time managing behaviour rather than teaching: that is half a school year’s worth of instructional time gone, with little learning taking place.

‘Catching’ people being ‘good’ – recognising and supporting them when they behave appropriately, and on a consistent basis letting them know you like what they are doing is positive teaching that brings results. We all shine in the light of encouragement don’t we?

Compare this to a school that you and I – TCN charity- supporters helped build, by sending funds to a no-man’s-land area on the Tibetan border a year or so ago. Despite having to trek several miles there and back every day the pupils have certainly ‘latched on to the affirmative’ with a 100% attendance record. The children are so proud of the school and so thrilled to be receiving an education that some even turn up on Sundays –when the school is not open for teaching - just to admire, polish, and sit in and even their new desks! The villagers who live in this seriously deprived and underprivileged area are poor in all but humility and dignity. They have probably never even heard of UK truancy statistics or the ‘Knowledge is Power Programme’ run in many USA schools, but they have certainly realised that the way out of the poverty trap and a rosier future for their children is via education.

Their old school used to be called the pig pen. Now, with an attitude of gratitude they have christened the new teaching establishment ‘Sunshine School’, adding the short but wonderfully descriptive new address ‘Happiness Village’. Though starved in more ways than one, yet hungry for education, knowledge and empowerment, methinks there may be little need to teach these simple-living people how to develop character strengthsincluding the virtues of wisdom, courage, fairness and love of truth. It seems they may already have these attributes built-into their very DNA. Which all prompts me to put Macca’s newest album on the CD player;see if it will help me concentrate on harnessing the positive power of optimism for myself as I sing along to those wise old words “Accentuate the positive; eliminate the negative; latch on to the affirmative ; don’t mess with Mister In-Between”.

GOING FOR GOLD

Inspired by the glorious successes of Team GB in the 2012 Olympics, our intrepid Kay Owen is in training to cycle from her Summer residence in Burry Port to the market town of Llanelli and back -a distance of 11 miles - plus 1 extra mile each way to make it the half ‘marathon’(13 miles - 21 kilometres) She is going for Gold, Silver and Bronze ... all in one ... “Not MY Olympic medals” she says” but rather YOUR ‘gold’ ‘silver’ and ‘bronze’ i.e. your brass” - in UK-sterling / euro, to raise funds for charity.

There will be no question of ‘move over’ Sir Chris Hoy, and Victoria Pendleton’s amazing record is quite safe. Kay is not in competition but she does have a goal :- to raise at least 500€ for two specific charities –one in her beloved home country –Wales; the other in her also beloved adopted island home – Gran Canaria.

Both organisations are registered Cancer Charities; Ty Hafan (Haven House) offers comfort and support to life-limited children and their families, helping them make the most of the time they have left together. Families who live every day facing the unbearable reality that a dearly loved child will die before reaching adulthood.

MILES FOR SMILES The other charity to benefit will be the local ACCM (Asociacion Canaria Cancer de Mama) which is a dedicated team providing superb care and support locally. As you will see by the picture the cycle-thon will be a “pedal -in- pink” bike ride.

Kay tells the editor “In Olympic-speak I will not be’ boxing above my weight’, and although it will be a personal best for this particular septuagenarian (who only ‘recycled’ herself 6 weeks ago)- success can only be measured in terms of a generous amount raised enabling monies to translate into meaningful application.

Bootcamp Weekend Fantastic Fun and a great way to see the island!

Bootcamp weekends are a new concept from our resident fitness instructor and personal trainer Isobel Ferguson. Basically it is an intensive weekend where you are introduced to a range of different exercises all designed to help you to burn off excess fat and then begin to strengthen your core muscles, in a fun atmosphere over a couple of days. It was adapted from the much more rigourous boot camp holidays that Isy helped make such a success on the Balearic island of Majorca, and which she and her team now offer here in Gran Canaria.

Probably the very best thing about Bootcamp is that absolutely anyone can do it. All you need to have is the motivation to really decide you are going to work throughout. This is not something that you can half do. So long, however, as you have truly decided that you are going to give bootcamp a go, then you will be surprised by just how much you can achieve in a day.

The instructors, Isy and Stan, are not just super friendly, but are expert in helping you to stay motivated and focused on the task in hand.

Their confidence, bourne out of many years training and instructing others, leaves no doubt in your mind that if they are asking you to do a thing it is because they are absolutely sure that you can. They help you remove doubt.

Waking up at 7am on the first day is not to everyone's liking, but it does ensure that you are eased in to your first set of exercises before the sun comes up & starts to rob you of your energy., All in all this is an amazing way to explore the island and learn easy to use methods for improving your body and your health.

ways to keep fit Number 7: Skipping for under €30 !

Patience is key when learning how to skip. Once you´ve mastered it you´ll reap the benefits and burn some serious calories.

As it is an all body workout you´ll exercise not just your lower body (quads, glutes, hamstrings and calves) but also your core (abs, lower back) and upper body (triceps, biceps and shoulders)

Tips -

Be patient! You will get out of breath but that is normal and it will get easier.

Wooden or padded floors are ideal surfaces to skip on as they soften the impact on your knees and joints

How to start 1.

Please remember that skipping can be a strenuous exercise so start slowly to avoid any injuries and always check with your Doctor beforehand.

2.

Before starting any skipping make sure you stretch well and be sure to include a calf stretch otherwise you will be sore the next day!

3.

To find the correct length of rope for your height, stand in the middle of the rope and bring both ends up until each end meets your arm pits. Adjust accordingly.

4.

There are 2 basic types of ´jump´ : bouncing on alternative balls of your feet (single bounce) and bouncing with both balls of your feet together (double bounce). Try skipping with either of these jumps or a combination for 20 seconds then rest for 20 seconds whilst marching on the spot and repeat. Gradually increase the skipping duration and decrease the resting time.

Jacobs värld av Jodi Picoult Jacob Hunt är 18 år och bor tillsammans med sin mamma och yngre bror. Han är begåvad men har trots det svårt att tolka sin omgivning och det sociala spelet. Han försöker lära sig förstå men det är inte alltid så lätt eftersom han uppfattar allt som sägs ordagrant. Jacob Hunt har Aspergers syndrom och hans sätt att se på världen skiljer sig från många andras.

Boken är skriven så att tillvarons olika händelser blir belysta utifrån respektive persons perspektiv.

Samma situation uppfattas olika och Jacobs beskrivning av

Loppmarknad det skedda är den mest avvikande. Även om handlingen är dramatisk och stundtals tragisk, finns det riktligt med dråpliga episoder som framkallar skratt.

Jacobs värld är en gripande roman som insiktsfullt beskriver hur sjukdomen Aspergers syndrom påverkar en familj.

Där en helt vanlig dag, plötsligt vänds till en verklig mardröm.

Nerium Oleander Nerium Oleander En prunkande buske som finns överallt kallas stundtals rosenlager, men är säkert mera känd under sitt latinska namn Nerium Oleander.

I Norden är den en krukväxt som sällan blir mer än 45 cm hög,

men på Gran Canaria är den betydligt ståtligare med sina 2 till 5 meter.

Den finns i olika färger såsom vitt, rosa, rött och orange.

Blommorna kan vara både enkla och dubbla.

Bladen liknar pilblad och det är lika vanligt med helt gröna som spräckliga.

Det är en växt som älskar sol och den blommar året om. Men den bör beundras på behörigt avstånd. Hela växten är nämligen mycket giftig och på sydligare breddgrader har faktiskt dödsfall inträffat till följd av ovarsamhet.

Loppmarknad Framtill dess att alla byggnadsplaner för Faro 2 i Maspalomas beslutats pågår, som vanligt varje söndag, loppmarknad på den intilliggande parkeringsplatsen. Många försäljare deltar regelmässigt och har sina givna platser, medan andra är med mera sporadiskt. Vissa stånd är av mer professionell karaktär, till skillnad från de gamla köks- eller campingbord som får fungera som disk för de saluförda sakerna. Ibland saknas även dessa och på en filt, utbredd på bara

marken, läggs varjehanda ting.

Många olika nationaliteter är representerade men nu, under sommarmånaderna, är det färre antal säljare från norra Europa. Det utbjuds det mesta och det går att göra fynd. Det är en häpnadsväckande mångfald av produkter. En del nya, andra gamla eller åtminstone slitna. Det är föga förvånande att så många bruksföremål och prydnadssaker är till salu. Vad som är förunderlig däremot, är varför de en gång i tiden blev köpta.

Jordbruksmarknad

Varannan söndag, mellan klockan 9 och 14, hålls marknad i San Fernando, på området intill simbassängerna. Grönsaker, frukt, blommor, ost, bröd och vin plus mycket annat saluförs. Allt är lokalt producerat och av högsta kvalitet.

Hit letar sig sällan några turister, vilket är synd. Bortsett från den genuina stämningen finns det här stora valmöjligheter. Det mesta säljs i lösvikt och till skillnad från matbutikerna går allt att få i olika storlekar och kvantiteter. Priserna är dessutom något lägre än livsmedelsbutikernas ordinariepriser.

En ytterligare fördel är möjligheten att provsmaka varorna. Ofta står fat uppställda med ett rikligt sortiment av munsbitar och saknas något är det bara att fråga; service är en självklarhet och gemytligheten påtaglig.

Det finns få ljusglimtar för närvarande vad gäller ekonomin, ur den vanlige kanarierns synvinkel. Värdet på besparingar minskar.

Euron har fallit kraftigt mot de flesta valutor.

Under de senaste sex månaderna har dollarn blivit 6,5 procent dyrare. Snabbast och tydligast ser man eurons försvagning vid bensinstationerna. Priset på drivmedel har gått upp anmärkningsvärt och den 22 juli fick man betala 1,07 € för en liter diesel.

Däremot har valutaförändringarna ännu inte fått genomslag på livsmedelspriserna. En

viss eftersläpning är naturlig med tanke på distributionskedjans längd från producent till konsument, men det går heller inte att utesluta att konkurrensen ökat och att kanariska företagare fått se sina marginaler minska.

Färsk statistik visar också att priserna på hus och lägenheter fortsätter sin nedgång.

Fastighetsägare kan inte heller påräkna hyresintäkter likt de, som rådde för bara någon tid sedan.

Men ur ett annat perspektiv är det goda tider. Semestrande nordbor har aldrig fått så mycket för sina pengar som de lär få vid sin planerade vintersemester. För tack vare den dåliga sommaren, i Sverige den svalaste och regnigaste under detta årtusende (den blötaste juni i Stockholm på 56 år!), väntas turistströmmen från Norden slå rekord.

Och det är bra för Gran Canaria och dess invånare!

Det har varit en synnerligen dyster period på Madridbörsen.

Fredagen de 20 juli föll den med hela 5,8 procent och sedan årsskiftet är nedgången

Danskar och norrmän har under lång tid kunnat glädja sig åt en stark krona. Men den svenska har under kort tid förstärkts kraftigt och slagit nya rekord i värde

Vilket hotell?

Många hotell fräschas för närvarande upp och en del genomgår en omfattande renovering. Ett av dessa ligger i Playa del Inglés. Med ett nyanlagt poolområde

är det inte helt enkelt att känna igen sig.

Men, de som bokat sin semester på Riu don Miguel kan se fram emot att slappna av i en av dessa läckra vilstolar.

Väder Juli har varit ännu varmare än juni.

Dagstemperaturer på 26 – 27 grader, men som högst noterades

27 procent. Den motsatta utvecklingen i Norden, med successiva uppgångar har lett till att gapet mellan börsernas värde i Stockholm och Madrid återigen vidgats.

Valutor

Fiskvecka i Arinaga

I maj 2011 togs ett initiativ bland en grupp av restaurangägare i Arinaga att man under en veckohelg skulle ha ett gemensamt tema, runt vilket matlagningen skulle röra sig. Sedan dess har de 15 till 20 anslutna restaurangerna varje månad serverat, utanför den ordinarie menyn, deras egen variant av den överenskomna inriktningen.
