Setting the record straight

A couple of weeks ago Spanish national daily newspaper ABC published a letter to the editor from HM Ambassador Giles Paxman rejecting suggestions that the British Embassy is encouraging “health tourism”.

“Sir I am writing with regard to your recent reports criticising the advice on the British Embassy website regarding access to healthcare in Spain and the work of the NGO Age Concern España.

The British Government does not condone or encourage “health tourism”. British nationals visiting or residing in Spain are of course entitled to access the Spanish healthcare system, just as Spanish nationals in the UK are entitled to access the British healthcare system. The advice on our website and that given by Age Concern España aims to ensure that they do so in full compliance with Spanish and European legislation.

British visitors make up approximately 24% of the total number of tourists visiting Spain. It is in the clear interest of both the UK and Spain that they should receive medical attention if they urgently need it. By ensuring that they know how to access the Spanish healthcare system, we can avoid unnecessary administrative costs for both Spain and the UK, and ensure that the UK can reimburse Spain accurately and efficiently in line with the specific provisions set out in EU legislation. The Embassy website advice makes clear that the European Health Insurance Card does not cover those who come to Spain for the specific purpose of health treatment.

There are also many British nationals resident in Spain.

The aim of our website advice is to ensure that if they need to access the Spanish healthcare system, they do so in full compliance with Spanish legislation. Registration on the “Padron” facilitates this and is a requirement of Spanish law.

Age Concern España provides a fundamental lifeline for British and other English-speaking elderly residents who are isolated, in poor health and in urgent need of help. The charity closely collaborates with Spanish authorities via the British Consulates, taking on cases where language is a barrier, thus reducing demands on Spanish social services. In addition, a significant part of Age Concern’s work involves helping to repatriate British nationals, who for one reason another can no longer financially support themselves in Spain and have to return to the UK. It is not part of their work to help British citizens access benefits to which they are not entitled.

Successful cooperation between the Spanish authorities and the UK Border Agency team in Spain resulted in the arrest on 27th March 2012, by the Police in Tenerife and Madrid, of nine members of a Spainbased gang believed to have organised the illegal entry of large numbers of Iranians nationals into the UK. Although based in Madrid, the gang used the Canary Islands as a final staging post to move illegal migrants to the UK. In early February, after receiving information from the UK Border Agency in the UK, the main operator in the syndicate was identified through collaborative work between the UK Border Agency team in Madrid with their Spanish colleagues in the Central Organised Immigration Crime Brigade. Information was exchanged and a strategy agreed to counter this threat to the UK Border.

A picture emerged of a network transporting Iranians illegally into Europe and onto the Canaries using false documents. It was established that safe-houses existed in mainland Spain and the Canaries and the group had ready access to a variety of stolen travel documents and credit cards.

By sharing intelligence with

the Spanish authorities, and working with airlines and UK Border Agency teams across Europe, groups of Iranians intending to travel illegally to the UK were identified.

The nine arrested were 5 Iranians, 1 Mauritanian, 1 Moroccan, 1 Malian and 1 Colombian. They have been charged with a variety of offences including falsification of documentation and provision of false documents, credit card fraud, membership of a criminal organisation and people smuggling. It is not known how many people were successfully smuggled

in total by this group.

The Operation was the outcome of complex investigations into the movement and arrival of Iranians into the UK from the Canary Islands which the Agency’s team in Madrid had been working on with the Spanish Police. This successful collaboration is viewed by the UK and the Spanish authorities as a major success and a template for further joint working to tackle illegal migration into and from Spain.

Those who engage in the facilitation of illegal migration should know that they will be targeted and brought to justice”.

Puerto Rico balcony fall A 27-year-old British woman was injured last week in a fall from a fifth floor balcony at a holiday apartment complex in Puerto Rico. British Newspaper’s, led by the Daily Mail, originally reported that she had died at the scene, sparking complaints from the girls family.

The holidaymaker, who has not been named, fell some 50 feet just after 3am last Monday in popular British Tourist Town Puerto Rico, not far from Maspalomas, on the south-west coast of Gran Canaria.

She was rushed to hospital by an ambulance from the Emergency Coordination and Security Center (CECOES) 1-1-2, where she remains.

Let the f With Maspalomas Gay Pride 2012 just 1 week away, the humble offices beneath the CC Yumbo are a hive of activity. In the last week alone, more than 20 international dancers arrived on the island to prepare for the stage shows. Speaking of which, work has also started to transform the stage ready for the Gay Pride shows.

The event is now recognised as one of the largest LGBT Prides in Europe & we would like to thank the local and international press & media. The Support & coverage of pride this years has been fantastic! Helping us to make Maspalomas Gay Pride bigger and better every year.

British woman arrested after hit and run on Gran Canaria Italian woman Knocked off her

moped and Brit failed to stop. A British woman has been arrested after a hit and run accident in the south of Gran Canaria. The woman knocked a 57 year old Italian woman off her moped and then drove on. Witnesses took down the number plate of the car and this led to her arrest. Both she and her companion in the car tested positive for alcohol and will appear shortly before the courts in San BartolomĂŠ de Tirajana. She faces charges of carrying out a crime against traffic safety and of failing to provide assistance. The victim is in the Las Palmas Insular Hospital recovering from multiple traumas.

She is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

He recently moved to the island & when not working tirelessly for Maspalomas Gay Pride he works on stage production for Leeds Pride in the UK as well as holding down a part time job for an airline.

Marthe Mosnes originally from Norway, is back with us for her fourth year. Yet again, flying from her home in Lanzarote and giving up 2 weeks of her time to work for Maspalomas Gay Pride.

Marthe is the delightful lady you will meet managing our ticket office in the Yumbo.

She is eager to get back in her kiosk & enjoy the pride atmosphere!

Cream Tea and Melodies In early September of 2011 Chris and Stephan accepted a challenge to change a German Oompahpah bar, typical many CITA shopping centre establishments, into a more international venue, where anybody could have a great time.

The situation of the bar made the challenge all the more difficult being upstairs in the CITA centre, Chris and Stephan are clear in their ideas, however, and set to their task with a vengeance, they have put new seating in and so now have room for 40 people to sit comfortably at their tables and enjoy either live music or the sporting events on their five independent high definition televisions.

The lads have a great relationship with their neighbours, so you can enjoy a drink whilst you are watching the football or formula 1 on the big screen and if you get puckish, order a meal from one of the restaurants nearby; Chris or Stephan will fetch it for you to eat there without interrupting your enjoyment of their lively nightspot.

Every Monday night between 9 and 11 there is live classical guitar music with a slight twist, Walter

Silva the Argentine virtuoso plays relaxing classical guitar but also acoustic versions of some of everybody’s favourites Abba, the Police etc, whilst on Saturdays Ladina (German) and Jimmy(English) get people dancing in the aisles (and most people do) at a regular party that runs between 9 and midnight, boasting one of the biggest dance floors in Playa del ingles.

Chris and Stephan have some plans for Gay Pride too, they have celebrated Pride in London and Brighton as well as here so know the score and anybody that would like a Champagne breakfast can have either a bottle of Veuve Cliquot or Moet for less than 50 euros, they have an area where people can change into their carnival costumes or Glam up whilst warming up

for the party.

They will be having a Eurovision party during Pride and of course a Eurovision night (fancy dress optional) for the final of the contest on the 26th of May. Another big party night will be Queen’s diamond jubilee street party with bunting, confetti and again the fancy dress option, I am sure that if her majesty is in the area she would definitely want to pop by.

Any afternoon or evening you can enjoy one of the cream teas that the chaps are now becoming famous for, with scones or toasted teacakes and loose leaf tea served in a teapot on a silver tray, they serve Fruh Kolsh German export lager with all of the taste that the Germans demand of an export beer, they have a selection of Kopperberg flavoured ciders , only use known brand drinks and then of course there is Stephan’s ‘secret recipe’ home made sangria(guaranteed to get the party going) Finish that off with a darts machine to get practicing for the Melodies/The Canary News international darts open (coming soon), and you have all the makings of a splendid night out, all you have to do is turn up and the fun will occur naturally!

GAYFAIR comes again to Expomeloneras For the second time, Lopesan Group plays host to a unique workshop and networking event for LGBT businesses and Gran Canaria’s 2nd annual International Homo-Erotic Lesbian Art Fair

For the second consecutive year, Expomeloneras becomes the headquarters of GayFair, held on 10th and 11th May. This year’s program includes a workshop to raise awareness about products and services for the LGBT community as well as various workshops, conferences and art shows attracting some international names.

Presenting the event to the press, Councillor for Tourism of the Municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Ramon Suarez spoke about the development of this extraordinary initiative embodying “ tourism and culture, aiding the continuing development of the municipality as a model of tolerance and respect and a destination without borders, helping to reactivate the economy of the area.” He stressed that it was espcially important in a year in which

the world tourism industry celebrates 50 years of Maspalomas Costa Canaria as one of the first and foremost tourist destinations in the world.

Crisanto Roman, Director of Expomeloneras, spoke of the whole Lopesan Group, who operate the exhibition and conference centre, being most gratified to be hosting and supporting this type of event and hope that in future, GayFair can “become the biggest fair of products for the LGBT market in Spain”.

Meanwhile, Elena Vega, coordinator of the Fair, confirmed an increase in the amount of companies exhibiting this year, among which are travel agencies, hotel chains and wineries. Also, Vega was thankful that in times of crisis that businesses have continued to support this initiative “adding value to the week of GayPride and helping boost the economy of the area.” She pointed out proudly that the GayFair 2012, this year has the support of Glay, organizers of GayPride, and UXXS Magazine.

Throughout the GayFair there will be several conferences and

workshops. Desire Chacon, one of the speakers who seeks equality in marriages between same sex couples in Spain, thanked the Lopesan group “for always having the door open to such initiatives.” Among the workshops planned, visitors will be able to attend courses such as miniature erotic bakery or learning tools for the

prevention of LGBT-phobia.

In the 2nd International Art Fair Homo Erotic Lesbian, there will be works by artists such as Victor Landeta, Marco and Pepe Baroncini Piaz.

Entrance is free to the public and will be open from 10am to 6pm on both days of the fair.

Owner won’t pay a community charge The owner of my flat is refusing to pay community charges for maintenance of the stairs because he says it is a charge for which I, the tenant, am liable due to the contract between us.

Who is responsible for these community charges?

It also seems a wind of change is blowing as leaders are now talking about other measures and not just austerity to fix their problems and in a rare concession even German Chancellor Angela Merkel has admitted that austerity alone would not solve the crisis we face. The Netherlands know to their cost that you can only place so much pressure on your voters.

Eurozone countries such as France, Spain, Italy etc have also been very busy during the last couple of weeks with various bond auctions with some success although rates in Spain have been somewhat concerning as they approached the 5.8% area.

RENTA / Tax return in Gran Canaria

It’s that time of year again when you have to submit your tax return. This used to be a near impossible task where only those with a PHD in advanced accounting and the patience of a saint could do it themselves but nowadays it is quite possible for mere mortals like ourselves. So if you’re working here in GC and want to do everything by the book have a look at our guide below.

The RENTA is the obligatory Spanish annual tax return and the time period for

requesting ‘la declaración de la RENTA’ starts at the beginning of March and finishes at the end of June. The earlier you do it the quicker your return is processed.

If you don’t own a house or have children it’s easy to do yourself on the Internet. If you have children or own a house think about asking a gestor to do it for you to make sure you get all the tax benefits that you should.

To do the RENTA yourself there are two stages: 1. Get the borrador (draft tax return) 2. Submit your tax return

Getting the borrador Go to the Agencia Tributaria website (agenciatributaria. es) then search for or click on “solicitud de borrador” This will open a new window and you need to fill

in your NIE number and name.

If you haven’t declared before click on the box ‘no declarante’ and then follow the stages.

This will register you with the tax office and they will send you a borrador which is a draft of the tax return by post.

Submitting your tax return Once you get the borrador you can check it through (well try to, it’s almost impossible - if you know someone who speaks Spanish and knows a bit about tax have a word with them). If the details are correct go back to the website, download the RENTA program (see link on the Gran Canaria Guru website if you can’ find it yourself), submit your bank details and submit it via the internet. If you don’t agree then make an appointment through the same webpage to go and talk to someone to help

you change it. The government sets up an office for people to go and talk to someone about their tax return, make any changes and then submit it.

After submitting your RENTA declaration wait a couple of months and the money will miraculously appear or disappear (if you have to pay) from your bank account. If you haven’t received the money in your account by December 31st you are legally entitled to the interest on what you are due to receive.

Once you’ve done the RENTA once the tax office will automatically send the borrador the following year once the time period of the declaracion has opened.

Using a gestor If you don’t feel you can

do your tax return by yourself or you feel they have got it wrong in the borrador, employ a gestor to do it for you for about 60 euros. You just need to go with your ✔ NIE ✔ certificado de retenciones from your employer ✔ Certificate from your bank - they will have sent it to you at the start of the year with RENTA in big letters on it ✔ Paperwork regarding charitable donations, mortgage payments, house reforms, if you have bought a property last year,your IBI payments and your libro de familia if you have children.

As a general rule if you own a house or have children you should get money back in your declaración de la RENTA, if the borrador states you are not going to receive money have a word with a gestor as

the borrador is often wrong. I have known many people who have been told in the borrador they owe 50 or 60 euros but after seeing a gestor have received 1000 -3000 euros from the tax office!

Maspalomas GayPride 2012 is now bigger than ever, with more than 100,000 people expected to Gran Canaria over then next fortnight specifically to join in with what is known to be one of the biggest Pride events in the world.

However this is also a year of financial hardship for many, and few more than Gran Canaria local charity Amigos Contra El SIDA (ACES), Friends Against AIDS, who have had their government funding slashed to nearly nothing. The Life Ball – one of the biggest and most spectacular annual charity events in the world – has attracted strong international interest and great public attention. The main priority of this extraordinary Ball is, however, not only the exuberant celebration of the party people or spectacular live acts, but especially the fight against AIDS. Every year they now raise well over €1.5million for AIDS charities, projects, treatment and prevention.

To ensure that the meaning of this major event is not forgotten, the opening ceremony on Vienna’s city hall square includes moments of silence and speeches by international stars and partners, which focus on raising awareness for AIDS. Since the establishment of this society highlight, which has become a real tradition, numerous celebrities (designers, actors, musicians, politicians and models) have shown their personal commitment to the issue with breathtaking live performances, sending a strong signal of solidarity. They make use of their popularity and position as role models for a good cause Organizer and founder Gery Keszler is the “face” and

The first Life Ball took place on May 29, 1993. Gery Keszler chose the Vienna city hall as venue because he found it holds great symbolic value.

Zilk was convinced of the positive effect of such an event and gave it a try. He agreed to let Keszler have the festival hall in the Vienna city hall and supported him despite all opposition. Zilk’s stance was remarkable as support for this cause was not something that could be taken for granted at that time In addition to the Vienna city administration, the event originally had only two sponsors. The ATS 1,100,000 (EUR 79,940) raised by the first Ball were donated to the nonprofit organization AIDS LIFE, which was founded by Gery Keszler and Torgom Petrosian

in 1992, to support other organizations helping people who are HIV-positive or have AIDS. Ever since the first Life Ball, a fashion show, then presented by Thierry Mugler, has become a key feature of the event.

Compared to today, the Life Ball started as a small event from the gay community. In contrast to other events attended by Keszler back then, it was never intended to be an event only for the gay scene or jet-setters. It combines Viennese ball tradition with fancy-costume queer balls.

Some of the gay community supported the project greatly, especially when it was still in its infancy. However, the Ball has attracted a majority of heterosexual guests for some time now, and also many companies make a contribution.

To avoid the potential worst case – that gay people do not get tickets to an event which had its origins in the gay scene – the lesbian and gay community has had a ticket quota for some years. Even though the Life Ball has not been a mere “gay” event for some time, just as much as AIDS is not simply a “gay” epidemic, it still has this reputation.

The attribute “gay” has, however, not been detrimental to revenue. When not discussed in the equal rights context, it has been noted that “gays are considered creative and fun – and are said to throw better parties,” which can be seen as a money-making

(Gerardo, Las Palmas) Dear Gerardo, That is a complicated question to answer as every college or university asks for different levels depending on what course you are applying for. The minimum is a B2 level (Trinity College ISE II) although some will demand a C1 level (Trinity College ISE III).

The best thing to do is to contact the University and ask them directly.

Once you have filled in the online application form you send it to the college or university or back to UCAS if you are doing it through them. It is advisable to send in applications to more than one University, as places are sometimes limited.

Phase 3 -. Receiving offers from universities.

Once you have sent in the applications to various universities or colleges they will decide whether they will offer you a place or not. If you are accepted you must reply to your offers, if you aren’t accepted you will need to send in new applications, take into account that most applications for universities have to be sent in before January so plan your course of action in plenty of time, some universities will accept late candidates even up to June but there are no guarantees and it’s not worth the risk.

Phase 4 -. Send in your results.

Phase 5 -. Once you are accepted.

Once the university or college has accepted your application you will receive a letter from them confirming the application.

Before you start make sure everything has been arranged, remember you will need accommodation, flight tickets, financial concerns, books, course equipment …

How much money will I need for my tuition ?

Before deciding which university you will attend remember to be absolutely sure you can pay for the full costs these include : ➤ Tuition fees (these differ from each university or college) ➤ Everyday living expenses (accommodation, food, heating, travel, clothes, ...) ➤ Course material (books, stationery, equipment …) ➤ Travel to and from your country.

Angora rabbits are quite easy to care of, they don’t require vaccinations as long as they are kept away from wild rabbits which may carry infectious diseases. Rabbits are quite cheap to keep and don’t take a lot of time to look after them.

Keeping them well groomed is the biggest chore you will have to undertake and a cleaning of their cage twice a week.

Ivy is a very popular plant in England, many country cottages and old mansions are completely covered in Ivy, it is also quite common in the Canary gardens as there is a local variety found wild in the Canary Isles.

Many birds feed on their fruit including thrushes and woodpigeons, their leaves are eaten by the larvae of some moths and butterflies.

Ivy can be very invasive so care must be taken as to where it is planted to avoid it taking over your garden.

The berries are moderately toxic to humans, they are very bitter so poisoning is rare although it should be kept away from pets and specially from small children.

If you have a garden you might consider keeping them outdoors in a suitable sized cage off the ground, preferable on legs and make sure it is strong enough to resist any attack from predators, an aluminum structure might be the best option, as it doesn’t require painting or any other maintenance.

If you wish to keep them indoors there is a large variety of cages on the market, find one that will be suitable for your adult rabbit allowing him to more around freely.

Remember that whatever your option for housing, rabbits will need daily exercise out of the cage but make sure he can’t escape or get attacked by other animals.

Feeding

The most important part of angora’s diet is extra protein as

they require it to support their wool production, the best option is a well balanced good quality rabbit mixture which can be bought from a pet shop. Once a day should be sufficient. There are also a number of tit-bits which can be bought in the pet shops, these should not be fed in excess, only one a day.

Hay is essential for rabbits as they need roughage to prevent wool block, you can place these in a hay feeder or just leave it loose in the cage.

Water must be available at all times to your Angora, there are some very convenient sucking water troughs which avoid the water getting dirty, they can be washed quite easily with a baby bottle-brush and water should be changed every other day.

Grooming

A pet grooming brush, s comb, a small pair of scissors for cutting out matts and some nail clippers are the essential grooming kit. A good brush twice a week should be sufficient. Rabbits usually enjoy grooming and will sit willingly while you groom them. Avoid bathing them unless it’s absolutely necessary, as they don’t take well to bathing, if you do bath them make sure you dry them with a hairdryer and keep them warm.

Roundabouts, Girls and Prickly Cactus Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author.

Roundabouts are interesting phenomena in Spain and the Canary Islands. They are a relatively new idea for the country, and it takes time, patience and understanding for most expats to understand the local customs of how to deal with a roundabout. Most of the locals living near me approach a roundabout as fast as they possibly can, and if anything is likely to hit or obstruct them, they slam on their brakes as hard as possible. Great fun!

I approach a roundabout in the boring, studied way that I was taught, and according to the rules of the British Highway Code, i.e. slowing down, approaching the roundabout with caution etc.

Needless to say, the result is that I am usually hooted at in a very aggressive way from the vehicle behind. Initially, I thought it was because they were admiring my driving skills, but sadly no. Why is it I that too have not learned that roundabouts in Spain are meant to be an exciting daredevil experience of who dares survives the experience?

Have I mentioned the Brits? Well, although some

Spanish and Canary Islanders really do take some beating for shear foolhardiness when behind a wheel, British expat drivers really do win the gold medal. Firstly, they will not accept that it is not normal to drive on the ‘wrong’ side of the road. By that I mean on the left hand side, when most of the world drives on the right. Despite living in Spain, it is amazing how many British drivers suddenly forget that they are living in Spain, and insist upon driving on the left hand side of the road. Needless to say, this does tend to cause a few problems for other drivers, and I have witnessed a number of occasions when a car approaches a roundabout at speed, and then proceeds to drive the wrong way around it. It can be a very troubling experience to witness.

When I lived in the Costa Blanca, we had roundabouts adorned with pretty, scantily dressed young women, usually of Eastern European origin, clearly looking for someone to take care of them, offer them warmth and shelter and a cup of soup (this is a family publication, after all!).

After each mayoral election, the roundabout girls would disappear, only to reappear again a few weeks later. A new mayor always meant a temporary slowdown in business, and time for a muchneeded break, that’s all.

By contrast, roundabouts in the Canary Islands are

adorned with spectacular creative masterpieces, real works of art created by local artists and, in the poorer municipalities, many giant prickly, vicious looking cactus.

Yes, you can easily judge the status and wealth of a municipality just by looking at the quality of its roundabouts.

It has simply nothing to do with art, but the size of the balance sheet and the influence of the mayor.

A few years ago, our local roundabout was suddenly adorned with a huge and very attractive Christmas tree, appropriately decorated and lit for the Christmas season.

It looked wonderful and, no doubt, added considerable festive pleasure for anyone approaching it. A few evenings before Christmas, a driver headed towards our roundabout and instead of driving around it, decided to head straight for the Christmas tree. I suspect that he was trying to take his place at the top of the tree. Needless to say, he didn’t quite manage it, and the car, driver and Christmas tree were badly injured.

That was the end of Christmas for our roundabout and, since that time, no Christmas tree has appeared during the festive season. Mind you, we do have a wonderful display of prickly cactus, so any drivers considering driving over the roundabout to save time - just beware. Prickly cactus hurt!

Cheeky verbs: Six of the best

by Theresa Coe language exchange group (LEG) co-ordinator Sod´s law has it that the most useful verbs to memorise are often the hardest ones to remember endings for. The two wackiest (and therefore most crucial) are below: IR (‘EAR’: to go) voy (I go) vas (you go) va (he/she/it goes) van (they/you all go) vamos (we go)

SER (‘SAIR’: to be)* soy (I am) eres (‘AIR-ress’: you are) es (he/she/it is) son (they/you all are) somos (we are)

*This is the version used for permanent qualities or inherent characteristics. For temporary states or location, we use ESTAR - see lessons 11 and 12 for more on this.

When we use ‘ing’ for the future, the Spanish stick with the present simple: Voy a Londres el sábado próximo: I´m going to London next Saturday Vamos a bailar luego, ¿no? we’re going to dance later, right?

No word for ‘shall’ Again, just use the present simple form and a questioning tone of voice: ¿Vamos al nuevo cine en Meloneras?

(Shall we go to the new cinema?) Or ¿Voy al supermercado? (shall I go to the supermarket?).

Learn in sets Many verbs have the same stem-changes so you can learn them side-by side. For example, TENER (to have) and VENIR (to come):

WE forms: back to normal Apart from SERand IR, irregular verbs go back to normal in the ‘we’ form, and always end in the letters: ‘mos’. So, you need to know the original, infinitive form, knock off the last two letters and add the right ending (-amos, -emos or -imos) depending on whether the complete verb ends in AR, ER or IR: tenemos (teh-NEH-moss: we have) venimos (beh-NEE-moss: we come) For more on stem-changing verbs, see lesson 41.

Useful expressions with TENER The Spanish often use ‘to have’ instead of ‘to be’. For example:

What NOT to say: Some

English speakers translate ‘I´m hot’ word-for-word and make the mistake of saying ‘estoy caliente’, which actually means ‘I am horny’ (cachondo/a)!

Question: subject AFTER verb We put the subject AFTER the verb to form a question (¿Viene Juan? Instead of Juan viene, to ask if Juan is coming). However, we often leave the subject out (given that the verb ending tells us all we need to know), meaning that statements use the same word-order as questions, only with a different tone of

voice. E.g: vas a Las Palmas mucho (you go to Las Palmas a lot), or ¿Vas a Las Palmas mucho? (do you go to the capital a lot?)

Other examples include: Eres de aquí, ¿no? (you´re from here, right?) or ¿Eres de aquí? (are you from here?)

PODER (can) and QUERER (to want) Puedo, puedes, puede, pueden, and podemos (I can, you can, he/she/it can, they/ you all can and we can).

Memory trigger – think: ‘p’ for permission, as in: ¿puedo

pagar? (PWEH-doh pah-GAR: Can I pay?)

Quiero, quieres, quiere, quieren, and queremos Word-association aid - think: I want my KEY! as in: quiero (key-AIR-roh) mi llave These verbs are great to combine with a full infinitive, which makes speaking so much easier: ¿Puedes ayudar/me? (can you help me?)

THE SEARCH FOR PARADISE

Water, Water Ev In Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s classic poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, the teller of the tale laments onboard ship of an endless calm in the remotest part of the remotest sea: Day after day, day after day, We stuck, nor breath nor motion; As idle as a painted ship Upon a painted ocean.

Water, water, every where, And all the boards did shrink; Water, water, every where, Nor any drop to drink.

In fact less than one percent of all the water on Earth is freshwater available for human consumption.

Water is the defining commodity of life.

Humans can live for weeks without food, but only a few days without water.

Earth is known in science as The Water Planet. Water is of unparalleled importance in the search for Paradise.

Throughout the ages of human existence water has played the leading role in myth, religion, and literature in each and every culture.

From Atlantis to Poseidon and Neptune; from Loreley and the Sirens, to Noah and the Arc to Jonas and the Leviathan; from Moby Dick to Waterworld to The Abyss, the waters and their creatures, and their monsters, and their heroes and heroines, have held our imaginations enthralled.

And little wonder: it is all in the progeny. The Cosmos and Earth contrived to create the only planet in our known universe with dihydrogen monoxide (H20). And they did so with abundant flourish: Three-

quarters of the Earth’s surface is covered with water.

Mostly from the seas (and the rivers and the lakes) life began. Our planet is about 4.5 billion years old: one would have been hard pressed find anything resembling Darwin’s “warm little pond” anywhere on Earth. The oceans were acid, the atmosphere was carbon dioxide, and anything touched by the sun was fried by ultraviolet light. However they finally got started. The first single-celled organisms lived on methane and bicarbonates, and to survive they secreted tough films, lived underwater, and stuck together.

Life complexities evolved until the ultra-ancient seafarers took to the land.

The Superpredator (homo sapiens) entered stage left a mere 200,000 years ago.

From the Cosmos to the Earth to the Ocean to the Land.

We have been nurtured from the amniotic waters of our human mother, but we are spawns of our Mother Ocean.

Life evolved in water, survives byway of water, and, indeed, consists largely of water. The human body is more than 60 percent water.

Blood is 92 percent water, the brain and muscles are 75 percent water, and bones are about 22 percent water.

It doesn’t stop there. What we don’t drink, but eat – is mostly water: mammals, foul, fish are all more than 60% water; vegetables, fruit,

plants, and trees – even more so. Life came from the water, most requires water to survive, and is mostly comprised of water.

Earthly bound explorers of the Cosmos limit their searches when considering potential planets for study (and visitation) to those with the most likely prospects for possessing water, a.k.a., possessing prospects for life. Yes, it seems perfectly reasonable to place water – access, quality, and supply – at the very top of the list of requirements in our Search for Paradise. And so it is.

And how much water would be sufficient supply?

Would you believe nearly 700 liters per person per day in Europe (the average African family uses less than 20 liters each day, and much of that is below recommended standards for human consumption).

So Paradise requires much water.

Apparently from this generation forward, most drinking water must be accessed from bottles.

The stuff in the ground has become unworthy (polluted).

But to be fair, Gran Canary despite a mild drought or two every generation, has ample access, quality, and supply of water to meet

our projected needs for the next 50 years. Our human made reservoirs have helped (and it must be said are gorgeous to behold). And technology has charged to the rescue with the seemingly miraculous advent of desalinisation, filtration, and infusion – converting tainted or saltwater to sweet, healthy drinking water. Good for the peoples’ government on Gran Canaria. (In the parallel theatre of waste water and sanitation at large, our representatives have chosen less wisely – but that is a subject for another day.)

The secret of our water prosperity and grand fortune in Gran Canaria is manifold and complex. Only 3% of earthly waters is fresh. Most of our water starts out salty (oceans) and is converted to sweet (clouds). Due to the lack of proximity to human pollution (industrialised cities), Gran Canaria receives the bounty of extremely clean rain (as opposed to acid rain for example).

Further more, since our

goddess-like Atlantic Ocean who gently embraces and caresses our shores is very deep just beyond the tidal shelf – and deep equates to cleaner. Once again, sans nearby industrial polluters of serious moment, the surface seawater is comparatively pure as well. Add in the beauty of natural filtration systems (strong tidal currents, streams and flux; beautifully consistent equatorial seasonal temperate wind cycles) – and Gran Canarians can boast of our reliable clean and clear water unsurpassed in the world – truly magical rainwater and seawater! Finally, the negative we have not touched on – the destructive power of water byway of storms, earthquakes (Tsunamis), and the like: knock on proverbial, but Gran Canaria is under very

little threat or risk when compared with the rest of the planet. Great weather does great things with water including quelling her temper.

Conclude with delight that not only does Gran Canaria enjoy the finest (by far) weather on the Blue Planet, we quench our thirsts with love and adoration from Mother Atlantic for her favourite children on the Water Planet (that would be we)!

Same-sex mar Same-sex marriage in Spain was legalized on the 3rd of July 2005 by the social democratic government led by President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. It followed in the footsteps of the Netherlands and Belgium making it the third country in the world to recognize same sex marriages.

Although the ratification of this law came up against some criticism, 66% of the population were in favor, along with the King of Spain who gave his Royal Assent.

Under Spanish law, the country’s same-sex marriage law permits a Spanish citizen to marry a non-Spaniard

irrespective of whether the partnership is recognized in that persons homeland.

In order to marry, at least one partner must be a Spanish citizen. However, two nonSpanish citizens can legally marry if they both have legal residence in Spain.

Unfortunately, two nonresident foreigners cannot legally marry in Spain.

There is fear however, that Rajoy and his conservative Popular Party could pose a serious threat to the nation’s same-sex marriage legislation.

Rajoy has said “he supports civil unions for same-sex couples, but does not think they should be called marriages”.

The Popular Party has lodged an appeal against the nation’s 2005 law allowing gay marriage in the Constitutional Court. This

riage in Spain has caused a rapid increase of same sex marriages in Spain due to fear of the legislation being changed.

Gay marriage is recognized in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain and Sweden. It’s also recognized in some states of the USA, Brazil and Mexico.

Civil unions and registered partnerships are recognized in Andorra, Austria, Brazil, Columbia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, France, Germany, Greenland, Hungary, Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Slovenia, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Uruguay and some states of Australia, Mexico, United States and Venezuela.

A Blessing after a Civil Partnership or Marriage Ceremony A blessing is a short ceremony that takes place after a legal civil partnership or same sex marriage ceremony, which would take place here or your country of origin.

Unlike a ‘gay marriage’ or civil partnership, a blessing is not legally binding; it’s a way of publically symbolizing your commitment to one another.

For instance, enjoyed watching a movie his Redemption Song says called Marley, which, as very clearly “Emancipate the name suggests, is a yourselves from mental documentary about the life slavery, only ourselves can and work of Bob Marley. free our minds.”

I thought to myself During this film there were certain lyrics which stood what a wonderful Truth that out to me, even though I these lyrics describe as may have heard them many firstly the goal of Liberation times before, and yet it was and secondly where we

must look towards if we wish to Liberate ourselves.

The bottom line is this, it really is up to us as individuals to consider our faults as the things which by progressively clearer understanding of those things within our minds and characters which are very worthy indeed of letting go of, or which things within us are worth cultivating and nurturing and respecting.

In another of Marley’s songs entitled Corner Stone he explores a passage from The Book of Psalms (Psalm 118:22-23) “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief corner stone…” and in Marley’s

own words “The things people refuse, are the things they should use.”

Very often we tend to ignore or downright refuse to believe that we have any faults, instead all too often we like to point the finger at what we consider to be the faults in others, as this seems to be so much easier than we believe it would be if we were responsible somehow ourselves for those things in our lives which at times don’t seem to fit.

The story goes that when the ancient master builders were in the process of creating the temple of King Solomon that when one of the stones

had arrived at the site of the construction it was decided that this awkward looking and irregular shaped stone was completely wrong and did not fit the overall perfection of the design for such a holy temple. And yet, when the temple was near completion nobody knew where the corner stone was, that most vital of all the jigsaw pieces.

So one of the older builders suddenly remembered that cumbersome and misshapen stone which had been discarded all those years before. So the stone was recovered and it just so happened that it fitted and completed the perfection of the temple.

So, what are those character traits within oneself which, if we are examining ourselves through the lens of honesty, may become, with a little bit of work, something far greater?... for then what were perceived as faults can become the means of our Redemption and Liberation from our own mental slavery.

Incidentally, the most important tool which we all can use more of the time, and which Bob Marley stated in such a beautiful, simple and straight forward way… ONE LOVE. Which is of course

I know where I’m going... I think!

The Disney Channel has a hit musical cartoon series, the main characters of which have the unlikely names of Phineas and Ferb. This loveable duo lives in a whacky world, much of its silliness apparently accounting for the show’s popularity.

One favourite song says: It’s so much fun not knowing where you’re goin’ Take a left or a right, without really knowin’ Whether marchin’, flyin’, crawlin’, waltzin’ or rowin’ ...

There’s no surprise in life if you know where you’re goin’!

Last week I tried it out ... quite by accident!

While on holiday in Wales, my wonderful homeland, I decided to visit friends who had moved up to Snowdonia; this trip might well have daunted me with my minuszero navigational skills. Even in Las Palmas I am like the proverbial lost sheep!

However, recently installed ‘Sat Nav’ in our car made me super confident. I programmed it and sallied forth, CD blaring ‘The green green, grass of home’, i sang along with fellow countryman Tom Jones, feeling very patriotic and rather smug about my new satellite guide.

A female voice with a midAtlantic accent, interrupted our duet to inform me of the expected journey time 45 minutes - repeating my destination. “Don’t worry”, I told it, “I know where I’m

going.”

Two hours later, having unintentionally visited 3 farmyards, 1 field, 4 deadends, before crossing 2 streams and a bog, my song soon changed to a rather anxious ‘Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah’ as I realised I was hopelessly lost. To cap it all, when I tried to call home for directions, I discovered that there was no mobile phone signal 800 feet up the side of a Welsh, (and probably

every other) mountain!

Defeated, I switched off the by now maddening ‘machine’, and deciding to find my own way back, I descended down the mountain, praying for the sight of my lovely familiar ‘green, green grass of home’which at this moment would be a very ‘keep-a-welcomein-the-hillsides’ bit of sod.

Bring back the trusty old compass, was all I could think - I knew if I heard that

woman drawl “recalculating” one more time I would throw her out the window!

Another little sojourn later that week took me to where I was born, bred, lived, and worked for 30 years: Cardiff City. I caught a train from Swansea, and bustling through the Saturday night crowds at the very familiar Cardiff Central station, made my way to the cinema. “At least tonight I know where I’m going,” I thought happily.

Food for thought

I knew that the complex was in Mary Ann Street, a part of Bute Town, which in my youth was very poor and run down; not too far from the then Red Light district and the notorious Tiger Bay. I knew of course that the area had been redeveloped, one new part boasting a beautifully manicured park and now grandly renamed ‘Atlantic Wharf’. But I had not realised just how strikingly dramatic were all the changes.

A gentleman spotted me gazing around in bewilderment and asked if I was lost. “Well, I know where I am, and I know where I’m going,” I confided ... “I just don’t know how to get there anymore!” By now I am well into disagreeing with the sentiments of the Phineas and Ferb song - not so much fun so far guys!

I like much better the following ‘knowing where I’m going’ story.

Las Palmas have found the winning touch, against a demoralized Villarreal B, that could face relegation to the second B division wherever they finish in the league( if the Villarreal first team get relegated from the first division, the B team automatically follows suit). ▶ A good goal by Portillo put UD ahead in the first half with Villarreal equalizing in the 56th minute, in the 65th Jonathan Viera finished a good lay on from Francis Suarez. ▶ In the 70th Villarreals Porcar saw his second yellow card and got his marching orders, from then on it all got a lot more comfortable for Las Palmas, who counter attacked strongly and added 2 more goals, one for Sergio Suarez and the other by Randy in injury time. ▶ Next game is at home to Cartagena is on Friday 11th at 9pm. Cartagena are still fighting for survival so it should be an interesting game and hopefully UD can keep up the winning habit.

A wonderful sunny afternoon and a very small crowd of 7,485, which after recent appearances and the fact that the game is being televised is no big surprise, Jonathan Viera is back after his two match suspension and Las Palmas will be trying to avenge the 2-0 defeat in the away fixture against Huesca. ▶ Honorary kick off is by Caferino Fernandez the Gran Canarian welter weight boxer who has recently been crowned Spanish champion. ▶ After just 3 minutes a UDLP header just wide, both teams seem determined to play a passing game so after 8 minutes it looks promising, it´s end to end stuff but there are no really clear cut chances. ▶ 23rd minute, half chance for Huesca from a practiced free kick. ▶ Las Palmas are playing pretty football but are going nowhere, it is Huesca that look the hungrier of the two sides as they are trying desperately to lengthen themselves from the relegation zone. ▶ 35thminute Huesca have two chances to go in front as defensive errors leave two players unmarked in front of an open goal, which luckily for UDLP, Huesca do not take advantage, in the following attack for Las Palmas, Francis Suarez is unlucky with a diving header and in the 38th minute another Las Palmas header, this time from Corrales bounces back off of the crossbar and in the 43rd Vitolo has a good chance from 8 yards deflected wide. ▶ The second half brings on Portillo in the place of Francis Suarez, just a few seconds in Javi Castellano sends the ball over the bar from 20 yards, in

As you might imagine, Sugar is a white cat, about 13 moths old, upto-date on her vet visits including neutered, and passionate for the company of humans. Cats she can do without! Sugar is full of spice, loves everything nice, including play time, but is very content to be a house cat. She is potty-trained, doesn’t destroy furniture, and purrs to beat the band. Try her! You´ll like her!

She has been whisked off to TARA’s Casa Paraiso and has made a happy transition. Now Pepsi just needs someone to love her forever - not just until she becomes a bit of an inconvenience do to illness. She is a good girl, about 5 years old, up-to-date on all her vet visits, neutered, and ready to rock in roll in the home of a new family of her own. She needs that second chance at happiness. Asefa Estudiantes61-52Gran Canaria 2014 Estudiantes från Madrid har legat i farozonen för nedflyttning under flera månader nu.

Tack vare denna seger har de fortfarande hopp om ett förnyat förtroende till nästa säsong, och ställer återigen till bekymmer för kanarierna.

Till en början hade gästerna stora problem med hemmalagets försvarsspe och hade efter sex minuter bara åstadkommit två poäng gentemot Estudiantes tretton. Tränaren Pedro Martínez tog en välbehövlig timeout för att justera sitt gula lag, och innan den första pausen hade de hämtat upp merparten av underläget till 15-14. Kanarierna spelade bra i den andra kvarten, i synnerhet Nelson som gjorde tretton av sina 21 poäng under denna period, och ledde ett tag med sex poäng. När hemmalagets Simmons byttes in förbättrades

deras spel märkbart, speciellt med returerna där de haft stora problem, och i halvtidsvilan var resultatet 23-26.

Det var i den tredje perioden som Granca förlorade matchen.

Estudiantes veteran Carlos Jiménez visade vägen med ett solitt försvarsspel och åtta poäng, och tillsammans med Kirksay såg han till att det lokala laget vann perioden med 20-9. Gästerna hade inte kapitulerat, för i början av den avslutande kvarten satte man två raka trepoängare som höll hoppet uppe. Matchen jämnades ut, men hemmalaget tappade aldrig sin ledning.

Madridlaget lyckades hålla nerverna under kontroll, och Granca förlitade sig alldeles för mycket på Nelson och Bella, som till slut inte lyckades stå emot den lokala anstormningen.

Blusens Monbus 65-45 Gran Canaria 2014 I Santiago de Compostela led Gran Canaria sin fjärde raka förlust, och lät dessutom en direkt rival till att undvika nedflyttning gå om dem i tabellen. Nyckeln till hemmalagets seger låg i deras utmärkta försvarsspel, som Granca hade enorma problem att dyrka upp. Siffrorna talar för sig själva, bara 45 poäng under hela matchen, tangerat bottenrekord för säsongen.

Matchen började rätt så bra för gästerna och i pausen stod det 9-13 på resultattavlan. I den andra perioden förändrades matchbilden. Blusens anfall började hitta rätt, först under korgen men sedan även utifrån. De hade fortfarande problem med returerna, men det kompenserade kanarierna med att förlora många bollar utan någon som helst anledning. I halvtid var resultatet till hemmalagets favör, 29-24.

Efter vilan började spelet förhållandevis jämnt, men ju fler minuter som tickade förbi desto bättre blev Blusenes skytte från trepoängslinjen. Granca verkade inte komma pá rätt köl igen, och när Pedro Martínez tog timeout med tretton poängs underläge var det alldeles för sent. Kanarierna gav känslan av att vilja ha den sista perioden överstökad sá fort som möjligt, för någon kämpaglöd var det inte tal om denna gång.

Match efter match blir det alltmer tydligt att på bortaplan har Granca inte mycket att säga till om, bara två segrar på hela säsongen.

Matchen mellan Las Palmas och Recreativo slutade oavgjort, ett resultat som saknar värde för bägge lagen som hamnat i ett ingenmansland i mitten av tabellen.

Matchen började med två klara chanser för gästerna genom Matamala och Villar, som båda var nära att överraska hemmalagets argentinska målvakt Barbosa, men blev resultatlösa. Efter detta stängde Las Palmas praktiskt taget in Recre i sitt straffområde, men kanariernas bollinnehav ledde inte till något konstruktivt anfallsspel.

Matchbilden såg ut att ändras i den 32:a minuten efter att domaren tilldömt det lokala laget en straffspark. Men det ville sig inte för Las Palmas.

David González skott räddades av det gästande lagets målvakt Manu, som till slut skulle bli sitt lags matchhjälte.

Andra halvlek bjöd inte på många målchanser. Båda lagen verkade ha försonats med tanken att bara få behålla en poäng, och spelade på detta mållösa resultat. Det enda värt att nämna från matchens sista kvart är domarens utvisning av Las Palmas andretränare.

I den andra kvarten fortsatte den för hemmalaget positiva utvecklingen, och snart var matchresultatet oavgjort, 30-30.

Men ett lag som Valladolid som spelar med kniven på strupen kan aldrig räknas bort, och när halvtidsvisslan ljöd hade de átertagit ledningen med fyra

poäng, 34-38.

När lagen kom tillbaka från omklädningsrummen stod det klart att hemmapubliken skulle få se en spännande och fartfylld avslutning. Man turades om i ledningen, men skillnaden blev aldrig större än några poäng. Det största problemet för hemmalaget var det dåliga skyttet från trepoängslinjen, bara ett av tio försök hittade rätt. Gästerna lyckades hålla sin fyrapoängsmarginal inför de avslutande

tio minuterna. En inspirerad Bellas tog kommandot över de gula i den sista perioden, och Vallodolid med Borchardt, sin bäste spelare, utfoulad hade inte någon ork att stå emot längre.

När bara några minuter återstod insåg de slaget förlorat, och närmade sig aldrig mera hemmalaget som fortfarande har i sitt öde i sina egna händer inför de tre omgångarna som återstår.

Xerez har genom dessa tre viktiga poäng nästan säkrat sitt deltagande i den spanska silverdivisionen även nästa säsong. På samma gång har de gett Las Palmas dröm om att blanda sig i uppflyttningsstriden, den definitiva dödsstöten.

Bara ett mirakel kan nu ge kanarierna möjligheten att kvalificera sig till gulddivisionen, som självklart skulle innebära ett enormt ekonomiskt och sportsligt uppsving för klubben.

Hemmalaget tog initiativet redan från början, medan Las Palmas taktik gick ut på att backa hem och vänta pá ett bra tillfälle till kontring.

Redan efter några minuter hade Xerez sin första målchans. Sedan uppstod ett stiltje fram till den 24:e minuten när José Mari hamnade ensam med Barbosa, men den senare gick segrande ur duellen.

Kanarierna hade egentligen bara en målchans under den första halvleken som hemmalagets målvakt Toni Doblas avvärjde. I den 36:e minuten

hamnade gästerna i numerärt underläge efter att Ruymán blev utvisad till följd av två gula kort.

När den andra halvleken började bytte hemmatränaren in mittfältaren Rueda mot mittbacken Calahorro med avsikten att dra nytta av det numerära övertaget och flytta upp sina anfallslinjer. Detta skulle till slut betala sig, för efter en timmes spel styrde Herner in ett inlägg från José Mari i egen málbur. Barbosa var chanslös, och kunde bara betrakta hur bollen hamnade i nätet bakom honom. Det definitiva avgörandet kom tio minuter senare efter ett mycket bra anfall av Mendoza, som han själv avslutade med ett skott upp i krysset. Inför den sista kvarten gjorde den kanariske tränaren Juan Manuel Rodríguez ett trippelbyte, men allting var redan sagt i denna match och resultatet förblev oförändrat.
