Lent 2016

President's Welcome Often we discuss issues for pleasure, as though it is some kind of sport. Sometimes we confront issues that are personal, relevant, and have a huge impact on the world. It is my belief that we’ll all live in a better world when our country’s brightest students, who go on to all manner of amazing roles, get the chance to practise the discussions they will be having early, to form views, to speak freely and to exchange ideas. I hope that some of the topics that we address this term might be currently relevant to you. I hope even more that if they affect you in later life, you’ll have heard them discussed here first, and as a result, will have a better idea of what your views might be. In response to Members' requests for greater discussion and a chance to debate outside a competitive environment, this term we trial new 'Members' Discussion Groups'. The topics up for discussion will be centred around each week's debate. There will be no judges or points, and you can stay as long as you wish (or until you get through your last coffee). We hope you'll all then see each other at the debate in the evening, and continue your verbal jousting into the night. I won’t single out many individual events. A few, however, are particularly worth noting. On the 21st of January, we will discuss Mental Health, an issue which I know affects many of us. As such, it seems wholly appropriate to invite only proposition speakers to discuss the motion ‘This House Believes We Need To Talk About Mental Health’. Outside the Cambridge bubble, the rest of the world is gearing up for the U.S. election that will shape the next generation. We ourselves will play a part in this debate, by hosting a primary for the Democratic candidate for President of the United States on Super Tuesday. These events are exceptional, but each one in this Termcard is worthy of note. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it. Along with the rest of my team, I look forward to meeting you at many events throughout the term. James Hutt President, Lent 2016

Lent 2016

COMPETITIVE DEBATING The Cambridge Union Society runs one of the most successful and inclusive competitive debating programmes in the world. You need no previous experience to get involved. Every Wednesday during Michalemas and Lent terms, from 7.00-9.00pm, we run workshops and practice debates for those who wish to hone their skills. We also run frequent socials after workshops, as well as Women's Public Speaking Workshops on a Tuesday evening. Members can also get involved with judging or speaking at competitions around the country as well as coaching schoolchildren in debating and public speaking. No prior experience is required. Inter-Varsity Debating Competitions The Union will pay for members to go to University competitions across the country, both during term and in the vacation. These competitions take place over one or two days, and involve several rounds of competitive debating against teams from other universities. They also often include socials and workshops. There are also some international competitions we will fund – recent ones have included trips to Sweden, Ireland and Greece. These competitions are immensely fun, a great way to escape the Cambridge bubble and meet new people, while also improving your argumentative skills. Schools Coaching and Judging The Union also hosts debating workshops for schools across the UK. Teaching in these workshops is a fun, rewarding way to pass on the art of debating and develop teaching skills. Cambridge debaters also serve as judges for Cambridge Schools. This is the largest schools debating competition in the world, offering schoolchildren from a wide range of backgrounds the opportunity to learn more about Cambridge and debating. No experience is required to help with this – we will teach you all you need to know.

10

The Cambridge Union

Recent Debating Achievements We've won the Edinburgh, KCL, Oxford and Skopje Inter-Varsity competitions and had 3 of the top 10 and 4 of the top 20 speakers at the World University Debating Championships (WUDC). This includes the top 2 speakers at the WUDC. Three teams also reached the knock-out stages of the World Championships.

Wednesday Workshops Any and all members are welcome to attend the workshops on Wednesdays at 7pm. They cater to all levels of experience, and teach public speaking as well as competitive debating. No commitment is necessary – you can attend as many or as few as you would like. Workshops cover a broad range of techniques and debating subject matter, and there are optional practice debates as well. Our experienced debaters can also teach you how to judge debates at these workshops. All skills covered in these workshops are transferable, whether it be to making floor points during Thursday debates, to degree seminars, or even to career assessment centres.

WOMEN'S PUBLIC SPEAKING Workshops Whether you’d like to ease your way into Cambridge’s debating community or simply want to feel more confident speaking out in seminars, all self-defining women are welcome at these sessions with top Cambridge debaters and public speakers. These are aimed at helping you develop your public speaking technique.. They will be held at 7.00pm on Tuesdays in the Union building. We are arranging guest speakers for some of our workshops. Charlotte Proudman, recently branded a ‘Feminazi’ for speaking candidly about her experiences as a professional woman on LinkedIn, will be a guest speaker at the workshop on Tuesday 19 January. We hope to announce more names during term. You can come alone or as a group to these events. No experience is required, and you can come to as many or as few as you like. Contact womens.officer@cus.org if you have any queries.

Lent 2016

The Cambridge Union

On a debate night If haven't braved the chamber on a Thursday night yet, then Lent is the perfect opportunity to come and see our debates, contribute to the discussion, and make the most of you Union membership. The format used at the Cambridge Union is loosely based on the British Parliamentary style. Each team, consisting of three or four speakers, argues either for or against a set motion and are called the proposition and opposition respectively. The first proposition speaker starts each debate, and proposition and opposition speakers alternate throughout. Each speaker has ten minutes in which to present their case. Members on the floor are invited to give short speeches of their own after each pair of main speakers, again in proposition or opposition, but also in abstention. Members may also interrupt the main speeches, although only at the discretion of the speaker, to ask a question or give a brief point of information. To do so, they should stand and announce “on that point” or “point of information”. At the end of the debate, the President will invite the speakers to leave and then direct members of the floor to vote. Members vote as they leave the chamber by walking through a particular door, as in Parliament. Those voting in favour of the motion exit through the door marked Ayes and those against through the door marked Noes.

EVENTS & FORUMS Did you know? The Union has an online calendar function, which you can subscribe to on our website. Simply visit cus.org/termcard to sync all our events into your own diary. If you can't make an event, but watch it through the Members' Streaming Service, you can engage with the debate or ask speakers questions by tweeting us @cambridgeunion.

Unlike Parliament, members can also abstain by leaving through a third door. The swing in audience opinion is calculated from before to after the debate. Members will be given voting cards on the way in which will denote their initial thoughts on the motion. The results of the vote are announced in the 1815 Bar and Cafe around fifteen minutes after the end of the debate.

While tensions have escalated recently between Saudi Arabia and Iran, the West has been trying to re-engage, re-establishing diplomatic relations after the recent nuclear deal with Iran. Given Iran’s support of President Assad, and continued inflammatory attitude to both the US and Israel, the Union questions whether a policy of reconciliation is the best one. Cross Party Drinks will held in the bar after this debate.

Vacation Committee A special thank you must go to an incredibly dedicated group of volunteers who gave up a week or two at the start of the Christmas Vacation or before Michaelmas to write and send invites. Never have I seen a VacComm team throw themselves into the task so wholeheartedly – quite literally refusing to go home until well into the evening. Their enthusiasm was matched by their effectiveness and a huge part of this termcard owes its origins to them. One event in particular, How Do We Respond To Extremism? was put together, and will be run by, a group of Vacation Committee members, led by our Diversity Officer, and promises to be though-provoking as well as timely. So to Hani, Annabel, James, Henry, Rea, Andrea, Alina, Tom, Max, Connor, Miles, Freddie, Felix, Armin, Ben, Philine, Aditya, Andrew, Leo, Sachin, Livvy, Carrie, Dannielle, Daniel, Yoni, Quintin, Joe, Anna, Sarah, Chris, Alex, Ruby, Nadia, Emma, Hesham, Melissa, Eszter, Carol, James, Urban, Ruoran, Charlotte, Nnenda, Ellen, Sashi, Alex, Flora, Maya, and particularly Page – thank you. This term is better for all of your hard work and it was a pleasure to work with you all.

The Vice President and the Bursar would also like to extend their personal thanks to James Hutt, the President, for the tremendous enthusiasm, dedication and skill he has shown along with his team in preparing the Union for what they are certain will be an extraordinary term. Thanks also to Craig Slade for all of the hard work he has put into the design and production of this termcard. The Lent team would like to extend a special thanks to Bill Bailey, Joe Burman, Jody Fletcher, Nathan Caples, George Swarbrick, Sabine Edwards and David Sellick for their particular help. Without them the running of the Union would be impossible, and we are very grateful for their continued fantastic support.

LIST OF PEOPLE INVOLVED The number of people involved in the Union has skyrocketed in my 3 years here and its this that allows us to put on more events, more workshops and better debates. When I first claimed that "literally hundreds of people" had got involved at the Union this year - by writing invites, judging Schools' rounds, taking a committee role etc - none of the Lent Team believed me, but here's the proof. A huge thank you to everyone on the list (and apologies if I've missed one or two!) – the Union would look nothing like it does without you. If ever you've held back from getting involved because you thought people who did things at the Union weren't "like you" then here's 213 reasons why you're probably wrong... Lent 2016

President's Thanks I cannot thank the Lent Team enough for the unimaginable quantity of work they've put in over the past few months; for persevering, however much else they had going on; and for doing it all with a smile and making this such an enjoyable team to be part of. To Gabs and Anna, for making the Union a better and more fun place for everyone; to Charlotte, for going above and beyond your role and for your boundless enthusiasm; to Ash, for being so positive and someone everyone can rely on – I am sure the Spring Ball will be a night that lives in our memories for ever; to Josh, for the sheer tenacity of your hard work, for keeping us all laughing and always taking the time to check how things were going; to Katherine, my partner in crime for so much over the past two years – I can trust you with or to do anything and I couldn't dream of a better good or bad cop; and finally to William, for everything you do and the way you do it – your guidance, help and friendship have been more than I could ask for and it has been an absolute pleasure to work with you. To John and Asad, thank you for all the hard work you put in running an integral part of what the Union does and for putting up with all the non-debating events. Thanks also to your convening teams and judges who work so hard and do so much so well. To the Easter Team, Charlotte, Leyla, Page, Matteo and Kate – thank you for all your help over the vacation and good luck – you'll have a lot of fun! To the dozens of people who have helped make this term what it is – Appointees, Speakers and Debate committees, Stewards, the AV team, VacComm, those of you running the Spring Ball and many more; thank you for everything – this term is as much yours as it is anyone’s.

The Cambridge Union

us could do what we do without you! Doubly so to Bill, who has the toughest job in the Union yet always finds time to give student officers advice and encouragement. My time at the Union has been as fun as it has thanks to the friendships I’ve been lucky enough to make – thank you for all the happy Union memories Alex, Joanna, Tim, Dan, Freddie, Fred, Asia, Mariella, James A, Carlo, Nick and the rest of you. A few of my unlucky friends have had to listen to me offload my problems – but have done a remarkable job of solving most of them. Mosley, thank you for all the advice throughout Michaelmas, I took some of it. Oli, thank you for always keeping me laughing, we’ll make it on holiday someday (when you’re less fragile!). And Amy, thank you for your loyalty, your encouragement, your wisdom(!) and most of all for your friendship – never has it been more true to say I couldn’t have done it without someone. To my Pembroke friends, who have put up with so much whilst seeing comparatively little of me; I’m sorry for all the missed events and for talking too often about the Union. Marta & Pri, Tony & Emma, Sam, Simrun & Jack, Steph & Hannah M, Stefan and all of PCHC, you mean more to me than I think you realise, cheers for sticking with me! To my family, who’ve experienced much of the same, but with less choice about sticking by me, thank you for all your belief in me and for helping me to grasp these opportunities. Dad, you’ve given me the confidence I need to strive for things, and I’ve never once doubted you’d still support me if I failed – I hope I’ve made you and Mum proud so far. And finally, to any members reading this (which I realise may not be all that many!) my final thanks are to you. Thank you for all that you do for this fantastic society, for contributing your time and your ideas; for coming to events, voicing your opinions and getting involved. There aren’t many members’ societies like the Union and I count myself very lucky to have been part of this one.

The strength of the Union as a society is in very great part due to the fantastic team of staff who work here – stopping us from literally burning the building down or doing any manner of other stupid things. Thanks to you all – none of
