The Cabin is... in a strong position any way you look at

it: despite losing some seasoned board members, we have strong new players stepping in with more additions on the horizon; our financials are in great shape and this year we continue the trend of significant net income and growing net assets; season subscriptions to Readings and Conversations continue to approach the sold-out level; our recent strategic planning work not only proved to be a great teambuilding process but also provides long-term vision and guidance for both board and staff; and we have a very strong staff that is well-led, works together as a team, and is dedicated to our mission.

I’d say we’ve got a hand filled with trumps – and I mean that in the most positive, flattering way.

It was another great year at The Cabin. With an ever-

evolving collection of community programs, we continue to invest in the literary community, provoke discussion and challenging conversations, and spread the joy and craft of reading and writing. Thank you to our hardworking staff, our generous board, and to all of you, the members, ticket holders, and lovers of the written word who keep us strong with your support and enthusiasm.

Summer Camps

As June rolls around, The Cabin stocks up on pencils, notebooks, and popsicles and opens its doors to summer break students. Whether budding novelists or hesitant writers, The Cabin has a program for everyone. Our team of experienced teaching-writers mentor our aspiring authors through a series of engaging experiences and creative games, culminating in an end-of-the-week reading for friends and families. All camp participants are also included in our seasonal camp anthologies, giving their publishing career an early start. Best of all, thanks to the generosity of the community, scholarships are available for this one-of-a-kind art program, and students are never turned away from financial assistance.

Readings & Conversations

We believe that the power of words can create human connections. Each year, The Cabin gathers literary superstars, bestseller phenoms, and experts on current critical issues to come to Boise and jumpstart a community conversation. Last season we welcomed feminist icon Gloria Steinem, National Book Award winner and expert storyteller Colum McCann, the mesmerizing U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera, literary siblings Aimee and Karen Bender, and novelist Lauren Groff to share their writing and ideas with readers of all ages.

My visit to Borah High School was incredible! I am going to tell you something that’s hard to believe given all the schools I have visited in the last 47 years. Borah High was the number one! Something magnificent, rare and gifted took place in Boise, Idaho. Every single student in every single seat literally was standing up together, so concerned, so filled with inspiration, so filled with joy and intelligence and hope that I felt a collective human dream had come true.

Writers in the Schools (WITS)

For over twenty years, The Cabin has partnered with local schools to bring the joy and power of writing to the students of southeastern Idaho. Our dynamic team of teaching-writers work hand in hand with classroom educators to bring poetry, storytelling, theater, and nonfiction to the lives of the next generation of writers. This winter we added the Borah High School Bridge program to the WITS family. Bridge creates a supportive environment for new American and English Language Learner (ELL) students to help them achieve academic success. The Cabin is excited to assist Bridge and other underserved student populations throughout the school year.

Adult Writing Workshops

The Cabin’s writing workshop are designed to provoke creativity and experimentation for adult writers of all levels while honing skill and craft. In addition to our monthly free drop-in workshops, we offer classes in almost all popular genres. If you are a master of the short story, the next Oscarwinning screenwriter in training, or a poet at heart, we’ve got you covered.

Not only did I have a great week, I also left with a group of writers I trust to provide ongoing feedback and support.

Writers in the Attic (WITA)

This year brought us the sixth installment of The Cabin’s signature literary anthology, Writers in the Attic. Boise has a large talented writing community and we want to share their art with the world.

Each year we pick a theme, find a prominent local author to judge, and then open submissions to any interested writer over the age of 18. The best pieces are published in the anthology, and the authors are honored with a reading and party on The Cabin’s lawn.

We want Boise to be the best literary town in the country, but we can’t do it alone. Every year we lend a hand at Storyfort, part of the Treefort Music Fest, to put on four days of panels, readings, and performances. For our Ides of March publication, we reach out to local book clubs and gather their yearly reading lists so we can learn about the hottest new books. We’re partnering with Boise Public Libraries and the City of Boise Department of Arts and History to combine writing and public art and feature a new writer at the Library! at Bown Crossing every month. With the help of The Cabin community we pool the talents of 11 nationally known and local writers to create a playful one day story writing fundraiser called COIN. And finally, with the help of our friends at Boise State University, we’ll be presenting a new lecture series featuring the best in poetry and innovative fiction.
