READINGS & CONVERSATIONS Since 2002, The Cabin has invited some of the best writers in the world to share their work and ideas with Idahoans at Readings & Conversations.

Although we’ve had blockbuster years before, the 2017-18 season featuring Reza Aslan, Jesmyn Ward, Colson Whitehead, Viet Thanh Nguyen, and Katherine Boo might have been our best yet. Not only did our visiting writers collectively share three Pulitzers, three National Book Awards, and three MacArthur “Genius” Fellowships, they also helped jumpstart conversations on race, religion, poverty, and the refugee experience in America. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, four of our visiting writers also connected with students at local schools and juvenile detention centers.

WRITERS IN THE SCHOOLS (WITS) One of the best ways to foster a nation of readers and writers is to engage the populace at an early age. Every year, The Cabin partners with local schools and juvenile detention centers to send our community’s most creative teaching-writers into classrooms for eight- to twelve-week residencies. In addition to sharing the basic tools for successful writing, our WITS teachers impart a joy of self-expression and creativity that will continue throughout our students’ adult lives.

WRITERS IN THE ATTIC (WITA) Idaho is full of talented writers who might not be on every reader’s radar.

The Cabin’s Writers in the Attic anthology exposes the public to old favorites and new talent within the literary community. Each year, we pick a one-word theme, solicit submissions, and pick a prominent local writer to curate the collection. In August, we celebrate with a reading and book release party — easily our staff’s favorite event.

SUMMER WRITING CAMPS Summer is a beautifully chaotic time at The Cabin. Every day, the building is filled with young writers creating, laughing, and transforming their dreams into poems, stories, plays, and art. Our team of teaching-writers know how to spark our campers’ curiosity and make writing exciting! From surprising writing prompts to field trips to other Boise cultural institutions like Boise Art Museum and the Morrison Center, our camps are designed to both engage and instruct the next generation of readers and writers.

• 41 camps for 308 students in grades 3-12 • 10 local writers employed as teachers • 6 community partners including Boise Rock School, World Center for Birds of Prey, and the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe

ADULT WRITING WORKSHOPS Whether you’re an aspiring poet, amateur playwright, or emerging novelist, The Cabin has a workshop for you.

Throughout the year, The Cabin offers both one-night drop-in workshops and multi-week themed classes to help you hone your craft and get your creative juices flowing. All of our workshops are taught by local teaching-writers who are experts in their genres.

AND MORE! The Cabin is always looking for new ways to invest in the literary community and spread the joy and craft of reading and writing. We partnered with Boise State University to adopt the beloved Ghosts & Projectors reading series, presenting local and regional poets and experimental fiction at Storyfort and other venues. For the second year in a row, we worked with the Boise City Department of Arts and History and the Library! at Bown Crossing to give local writers the opportunity to interact with the public (and a piece of public art that just so happens to feature a typewriter) as writers in residence at the Library! at Bown Crossing. And, after a rollicking story last year, we brought back the COIN fundraiser for Idaho Gives, where we challenged a team of writers to join forces and create one combined work of surreal fiction in the span of only a few hours.
