Your letters, thoughts, opinions A family for all This article [More Than Grandparents: A second set of parents, by Andria Frankfort, June 2015] captured what I have always felt with the Fuchs, Haikin, Josef, and Zach family. I have first-hand experience that their family philosophy extends well beyond their nucleus. I have been fortunate enough to have a check-in call from Ricky, the unconditional acceptance of Roslyn, a best friend in Ellyn, and a sister in Ms. Fer (also known as Jennifer). I love the total inclusivity of each generation, and to read about it was like reading a favorite story I have had the great joy to witness and learn from.

From flooding to happy memories With the May flooding and chaos in our neighborhood, having the June issue delivered to our door was the sunshine in the storm. We had no idea we would be on the [Bellaire] cover, and our families were overjoyed when they saw the article [Wedding Stories: Memories from the big day, by Jordan Magaziner Steinfeld, June 2015]. We were able to reminisce about our special day, and it took our minds off of the tragedy we had just faced. The Flood and Facebook Where Houston went to help lawellphoto.com

This is the second in a series of articles on community Facebook groups.

M

eyerland resident Michele Poche woke up early on Tuesday morning, May 26, to the sound of water in her room. Her house was flooding.

She jumped out of bed, ran outside, pounded on doors and moved flooding neighbors to a house on the block that was more elevated. “I was a paramedic for 18 years,” Michele said, “so rescue is part of me.”

Later, she realized the severity of the destruction to her home and belongings. She didn’t have flood insurance and couldn’t afford to take much time off to plan the next steps for her house and children.

When Michele’s long-time friend Dana Karni, an attorney, heard, she went to social media for help. First, she posted in a Facebook group called Houston Flood 2015 Resource/Support Group, which had been created Tuesday morning by her high-school friend, Tandy Camberg Harris. Dana also posted about Michele’s situation in another Facebook group called Moms & Ladies of Southwest Houston (at the time, its name was Moms & Ladies of Westbury, Meyerland, Bellaire, West U, and Rice Village), in addition to her own Facebook page.

Right away, neighbors – most strangers to Dana and Michele – responded. They cleaned and packed her house, brought meals and gave her a new mattress, sofa, coffee table, refrigerator, bedding, towels and even a laptop.

“It was overwhelming,” said Dana. “This would not have come together so quickly if not for social media.”

Michele’s story was common in the days following the record-breaking flood that caused destruction and at least 22 deaths across Texas. In Houston, eight people died, and at least 4,000 homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed.

Ibby Bibby (actually Elizabeth Bandercan, but she’s known by her nickname) said all night long during the storm, people were posting on the “Moms and Ladies” Facebook group about how bad the rain was and reporting that their streets were flooding. When she woke at dawn MEMORIAL BUZZ JULY 2015 8

and turned on the news, she took action.

“I realized that we had to go from reporting what was wrong to being the ‘boots on the ground,’” she said. She had lived in New Orleans during Hurricane Ike and remembered her feelings of panic. So instead of letting those emotions wash over her, she posted this in the “Moms and Ladies” Facebook group: “Ladies, it’s time to rally the troops!”

Ibby, who will teach English as a Second Language at Bellaire High School starting this month, said the act of typing out those words calmed her down. She instructed others to post HELP if they could be a helper and NEED if they needed something. When she looked back 10 minutes later, there were already 36 responses. Other take-charge women started to chime in with what they could do or provide: food, furniture, clothes.

Before this, the group had served as a place for neighbors to network and provide recommendations such as the best repair shops or restaurants.

“I’m blown away at the depth of the women in my group,” said Ibby. “My husband teases me

about all of the recommendations on things, but when it came down to it, these women proved what it means to be in a community.”

Amanda Sorena, a Meyerland resident, said she thought Ibby’s post to get people moving immediately was “brilliant” and met with a “tremendous response that I don’t think anyone could’ve predicted.”

“The people who were okay had the manpower and willingness to help other people,” she said. It started small, but before long, crews of people were showing up. Eventually, volunteerrun “command centers” were created at Westbury United Methodist Church, the Jewish Community Center and other sites. Andria Ward organized the delivery of many hundreds of meals donated by volunteers and businesses, including Snap Kitchen.

In neighborhoods, Good Samaritans – both in groups and individually – were seen going door to door giving away Chick fil A meals, peanut-butter sandwiches, water, trash bags and boxes. Others walked up to strangers who didn’t have help and started drag- (continued on page 10)

Some volunteers called in professional help when they realized they were in over their heads, such as when a senior-citizen couple refused to leave their wet and mildewed home.

In Bellaire, an army of 30-40 students, parents and friends descended on a Carnegie Vanguard High School teacher’s home to rip out wet carpets and sheetrock after they learned on Facebook that her home had flooded.

Meanwhile, Facebook members continued to share needs and opportunities, such as when businesses stepped up, among them Gallery Furniture, which offered to replace flood victims’ mattresses, and Lowe’s, which gave away buckets filled with free cleaning supplies in its parking lot.

“I kept joking that if you want something done, give it to a busy mom,” said Amanda, whose 5 year old and twin 2 year olds sometimes went with her to help hand out water and food.

Lauri Rosen Sack, who has 16-year-old and 21year-old sons, used to live on South Braeswood.

Several months before the flood, she sold her house and moved a little further north. Their old house flooded.

Lauri, who used to own a children’s bookstore in Meyerland and started hearing about former customers who had lost everything, was invited

by Tandy to become an additional administrator on Tandy’s flood-resource Facebook group. Soon, her garage became a makeshift donation center.

She drove around town to drop off books, clothing and furniture. She also did others’ laundry.

“If it weren’t for social media,” said Lauri, “none of this would be possible.”

She said everyone used their strengths. Steve Hammerman, a physician, picked up and dropped off furniture and supplies in his truck. All she had to do was text him an address, and he’d take care of it – after completing his surgeries for the day.

“It’s the power of the people,” Lauri said. “I think everyone’s looking back, thinking it could’ve very easily been me.”

Bellaire resident Tandy Camberg Harris can relate. On Tuesday morning, her street flooded, but not her house. When she saw her friends post on Facebook about how they had four to five feet of water in their homes with photos of how everything was destroyed – including wedding albums – she said she was heartbroken.

Tandy started to think about what was going to be helpful long-term. She remembered what she had learned when she worked as an educational director at Houston Methodist Cancer Center. A renowned psychologist had said, in a presentation, that empathy from others is just as important as medication.

So that morning, she created the Houston Flood 2015 Resource/Support Group on Facebook, and she shared it with her friends and her community groups. She envisioned a safe space for people affected by the flood to not only share resources but provide empathy, too.

It started with 40 friends but quickly grew to over 3,000 members, constantly posting offers to help and reports of people who needed help.

There are many stories of those who received help through these community Facebook groups, even those who are not active on social media. One woman gave birth on Monday, the day of the storm, and ultimately lost everything – her apartment, car, and everything she needed for her baby. Someone posted about it on Tandy’s group, and the parents ended up receiving enough supplies and furniture that the baby could come home from the hospital.

Schools – such as The Caroline School, Harmony Science Academy and United Orthodox Synagogues Goldberg Montessori

School – were damaged in the storm. Parents used social media to get the word out about what schools needed and started campaigns on GoFundMe, YouCaring and other fundraising sites.

Michelle LaBombera, a firefighter in Galveston County, never imagined that her “Moms and Ladies” group would evolve in the way that it has after the flood. She originally started it around December 2013 as a way to meet people when she moved to the Bellaire area. Since her schedule isn’t a typical 9-5 job, she wanted to create an easy way to meet other people and ask questions.

“It’s almost constant now,” she said, referring to the growth of the group, which has seen its membership rise from around 1,900 to more than 3,000 since the flood. “Who knows what’s next?”

Hopefully, say those involved, the goodwill on these Facebook groups will stay strong and active as flood victims continue the long process of recovery.

“The bad thing about social media is it does burn people out,” said Michele Poche. “I hope that the momentum behind it keeps going. We all have a lot longer to get there.”

Air filters “What kind of air filter should I buy for my allergy?” The answer is “it depends on what you’re allergic to.” If you are allergic to cat dander or grass pollen, we recommend investing in an advanced filter. These allergens are small; thus, they are lighter than air and stay airborne long enough to be filtered out of the air. Compare that to dust mite allergy, which is relatively large, staying airborne for only 15 to 20 minutes after being disturbed (such as making the bed). There’s no way a filter can catch much dust mite allergen once it has settled back onto the bed or carpet.

Electrostatic filters are interesting. You get a permanent metal filter taking the place of your disposable fiberglass filter. This metal filter is better at trapping allergens than less expensive fiberglass models. If you use an electrostatic, run your air conditioning system using “ON” rather than “AUTO”.

You just paid for a good filter, and you want it filtering 24/7, not just when the compressor or furnace turns on. Be sure to clean the filter regularly with a strong flow of water at least once or twice a month. If you don’t keep an electrostatic filter clean, it will become less effective, increasing the drag on your entire HVAC system. Many HVAC companies don’t like electrostatic filters at all, saying they reduce the life of the entire system. Instead, they recommend disposable 3M Filtretes.

If you get a free-standing filter, should you go HEPA filter or a Sharper Image Ionic Breeze? This depends somewhat on budget and noise tolerance.

The HEPA filters have fans that make some noise. You have to change the pre-filter every two or three months. It’s very easy to change, but take the unit outside before you disassemble it so the dust doesn’t make a mess inside.

Changing the main filter is almost as easy, and it only has to be done every couple of years.

Post-bankruptcy, Sharper Image stills sells the Ionic Breeze, and Consumer Reports still recommends you don’t buy them. Here’s a line from their article: “By that logic, my coffee table is also an air filter because it collects dust.”

Look at a store’s return policy to see if you can try the filter out first. You can usually return them before 30 or 60 days. Keep all the packing materials and your receipt.

No matter what filter you buy, remember that a filter is just one step in a long process of allergen avoidance. If recommended by your doctor, you should also cover your mattress and pillow with impermeable covers, wash sheets in hot water, remove carpet from your bedroom, and keep the humidity in your home low enough to reduce growth of dust mites and mold.

Going to Galveston BOI Buzz residents share fave spots

W

ith Galveston just 45 minutes away, it’s easy for any Houstonian to cross the causeway, take a deep breath, and feel at home. But for some of us – born-onthe-islanders, or BOIs, and former residents – going to Galveston really is going home. For local perspective on what to do on the easygoing island in Houston’s backyard, read on.

Ashley Pratka was born in Galveston and goes back often with her husband, Al, to the bay house that’s been in his family for over 50 years.

“I appreciate Galveston in a different way now,” Ashley says. “Growing up there, it was a city. But Al feels like he grew up there too, just more on island time. So now I can go down there and slow down and turn off. We do a lot on the water, fishing and water skiing. Al would move there if I let him.”

Ashley, a former director of development at MD Anderson Cancer Center, says their favorite things to do “are not that touristy. We do random things like go to Tom’s Thumb [Nursery] and make terrariums, or we’ll go to Rosenberg Library [the oldest public library in Texas]. It’s just beautiful, and I can remember as a child walking around on that third floor and love sharing it with my kids. Schlitterbahn [Water Park] is always a hit with the kids, and so is Magic Carpet putt-putt. Just don’t go when it’s too windy.

“Also, there are golf camps all over Houston, but we really like the one at the Galveston Country Club because it’s a smaller venue.”

Keith Huang, a partner and general manager of Jinya Ramen Bars and a BOI, says when he and his family “convene in the G Rock, we always make it a point to have lunch at Queens. Their chipped beef po-boys are legendary.” And, he says, “Some of the best TexMex food in the city is inside a grocery store.

Kate Lykes, also a BOI and a mother of four, says one of her children’s favorite things to do is chase crabs on the beach by flashlight at night. For restaurants, she says, “Shearn’s [at the Moody Gardens Hotel] and Rudy & Paco are well-renowned and earn it. Number 13 is terrific and is waterfront.” And for more casual restaurants, Kate suggests Farley Girls Cafe and Mosquito Café.

Molly Holub grew up in Galveston and is a mom of three and an attorney. “I make my Houston friends go with me to Sonny’s,” she says. “They still remember me from when I waited tables there in the summers during law school. I feel a bit like a celebrity and everyone enjoys the Western Shrimp Buns (fried shrimp with barbecue sauce, cheese and bacon on a bun), gumbo and muffalettas. My kids now understand the concept of a dive.”

Like Kate’s, Molly’s children also like to hunt for crabs, but they go during the day. “If we go around July Fourth,” Molly says, “we bring buckets to Pirates Beach to dig for hermit crabs. I don’t know why they’re so prolific that time of year – is it mating season? – but it provides younger kids hours of entertainment.”

Kenny Herz, an attorney, was born on the island and goes back often. When asked what his favorite things to do in Galveston are, he says, “Does swim in the backyard and not leave the house count?” Then he gets serious. The Buzz Magazines 2015 Photo Contest

A

fter reviewing nearly 1,000 submitted photographs, we are pleased to present the winners of The Buzz Magazines’ 10th Annual Photo Contest. With any contest like this, the process is inevitably subjective. However, there are basic principles of photography that must be met, such as lighting, focus and exposure. And there are personal elements to consider: subject, emotion and storytelling. Judging is “blind,” as the judges do not see the names of the photographers.

Congratulations to each of this year’s winners, and to our Grand Prize winner, Darren Inoff, who will receive a Canon PowerShot digital camera, compliments of The Buzz Magazines.

Each year after publishing our winners, we inevitably get comments from our readers. Some agree with our judges, and others do not. So this year we included a new category called Readers’ Choice and let our readers vote for themselves. We posted the finalists on our Facebook page, and the photos that received the most “Likes” became our Readers’ Choice winners.

The Buzz Magazines’ Photo Contest is held every year and is open to all amateur photographers, so keep that in mind as you are shooting pictures in the upcoming year. Watch for next year’s call for entries on our social media and in the March 2016 print issue.

Grand Prize Winner Lovely Leopard Darren Inoff, 47, took this photo at Kings Camp in South Africa. Three male lions had recently killed an African buffalo and were busy devouring it.

He says, “This leopard sat patiently waiting his turn, and I was struck with how beautiful and calm he was while waiting so patiently.”

Judges’ comments – The crisp black and white emphasizes the details of the animal. Utilizing selective focus creates a blurry background to strengthen attention to his face. The details of the wispy grasses in the foreground repeat and echo the shape of the whiskers. An elegant portrait. The shallow depth of field helps separate the subject from its background while the contrast of the black and white helps to add drama. These elements combine to make a very dynamic image.

First Place, It Wasn't Me - Mauricio Recinos, 44, took this photo of his family dog, Chica. He caught her chewing a toy, and when she looked up at him, she “gave me the look of a kid caught with his hand inside the cookie jar.”

Second Place, Two of a Kind – Emily Shelton, 28, took this photo in the Maeklong Train Market, outside Bangkok, Thailand. She says it “perfectly demonstrates the creative presentation and clever packaging that allows quick organizing and sale of the fish.”

Third Place, Egrets Building a Nest – Robert Flatt, 67, took this photo of egrets at the High Island Rookery, Bolivar Peninsula. “I was worried about the overcast sky and light fog, which turned out to be an asset for this photograph. There is so little color … it looks like it is black and white.”

Fourth Place, Sun Worship – Jan Buchholtz, 58, was strolling through the Houston Zoo one winter morning and was drawn by the “kinetic energy of the ring-tailed lemurs.” The keeper said she’d be lucky to capture a shot. “And she was correct – the required slow shutter speed offered up plenty of photos of just a blurry tail leaping out of frame. As I was about to give up, this lemur turned briefly to worship the sun. Snap!”

Second Place, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat – Jan Buchholtz, 58, took this photo in Tournus, France. “I was focused on the architectural details and interesting alleyways as this lanky stranger passed by, jingling his keys and looking as though he could have been an extra in a Woody Allen film…. I managed to take one photo before he turned the corner.”

Third Place, Inspection and Repair – Raymond Zrike, 15, took this photo of one young skater among a group at The Galleria. “This particular picture (one of a series) artistically documents a brief moment of inactivity. Amongst the flurry of motion, the red jacket stood out as a static mystery.”

Fourth Place, Day Dreaming – Mauricio Recinos, 44, took this photo of his daughter, Isabella, in Galveston. “She was leaning over a balcony and staring at the sea…. I got closer and took the picture. She turned to me and smiled, then she turned again and kept staring at the sea. I think she was day dreaming.”

First Place, A Rose is a Rose is a Rose in Paris – Jan Buchholtz, 58, says this rose caught her eye while touring Musée Rodin in Paris after a spring shower. She was there to explore Auguste Rodin’s Paris sculpture garden but was drawn to this rose. “To my eye, this wasn’t just any rose. This rose was special. And so my title paraphrases patron of the arts Gertrude Stein; this photo breathes life into my memories of Paris.”

Second Place, Eagle Catching Fish – Ying Chun Jerry Pan, 74, says this photo is of “the star attraction of the Conowingo Dam in Baltimore, Maryland. From November to February, the Conowingo Dam attracts over a hundred species of birds, including the bald eagle.”

Third Place, A Splash in the Rainbow – Stratford High School student Zachary Harkins, 16, was inspired by Brooks Carver’s water-droplet photography. “I set up a container of water and used a rainbow tie-dyed shirt as the backdrop. As the flash went off, the colors of the shirt were reflected onto the water.”

Fourth Place, Underwater Garden – Carl Henry, 60, took this photo while snorkeling in the Galapagos Islands. “Anyone who has tried to take underwater photos knows it is very difficult. I have thousands of pictures with silt everywhere, half of a beautiful fish, and nothing is in focus. I am thankful this picture came out so well.”

Category: Landscapes First Place, White Cliffs of Dubois – Carl Henry, 60, took this photo in March in Dubois, Wyoming. “The conditions were perfect – fresh snow, a strong wind and bright sun – so I decided to revisit a project…: laying in the driveway and taking photos of amazing snowdrifts outside our house.”

Second Place, Glacial Stream – Shu Cheuk, 66, took this photo on the northern observation platform at Thingvellir National Park in Iceland. “Although it was already 10:20 a.m., the sun was only out for 40 minutes….

I was lucky to be there at that moment to capture that pinkish hue of the stream at the right angle.”

Third Place, Vincent's Starry Night – Jennifer Welch, 29, went to Big Bend National Park this spring to take a photo of the Milky Way galaxy, as she’s interested in astronomy. “The amount of stars that can be seen on a clear night at Big Bend National Park is absolutely breathtaking!”

Fourth Place, Brooklyn Bridge – Darren Inoff, 47, shot this photo of the Brooklyn Bridge on the pedestrian walkway above the vehicle lanes below. “I took this photo because the Brooklyn Bridge is such an iconic New York landmark, but I wanted to capture it from a different perspective.”

First Place, Vaulting To High Key – Shu Cheuk, 66, took this photo showing the motion of a college athlete in a pole-vault event in Louisiana. “After a thousand sharp pole-vaulting shots at 1000th of a second or faster, I decided to try some at various speeds below 60th of a second. The overcast sky was slightly overexposed, the athlete had blonde hair and was wearing white.”

Second Place, Eye Ball – Carl Henry, 60, took this photo of Blake Fox from Rice University, pitching against Louisiana Tech on March 14 at Reckling Park. Rice is his alma mater, and he regularly takes photos there. “I love how Blake’s stare-down matches up with the approaching ball.”

Third Place, Motorists – Ying Chun Jerry Pan, 74, took this photo of two motorcyclists at the Texas BelRay Action Sports Track in Conroe. He says the motocross facility, open year round, is a good place to take sports photos.

Fourth Place, Back to First – Daniel Hrachovy, 48, took this photo of his son, Connor, diving back to first base during a pickoff attempt during the West University Summer Slam 13U championship game. “You can almost feel the concentration in the first baseman’s eyes. Sometimes it takes hundreds of photos to get that perfect shot.” Connor scored, and his team won.

Third Place, Caught in the Act – Tamara Thompson, 60, took this photo of “a hawk eating its breakfast, in this case an unfortunate bird,” in a pine tree next to her home in Morningside Place. “A pair of hawks took up residence in the beautiful trees on our street and began to terrorize the birds in our area.

The hawks are fascinating to watch, but also a little unsettling because they are watching us as well.”

Carol Andrews’ Choice, Rice University Turrell's Skyspace and a Blood Moon – Robert Flatt, 67, took this photo in October at the Rice University James Turrell Skyspace exhibit. Robert says he has been photographing this exhibit since it opened. “I am drawn to it like the people in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The feeling I get at the base of my spine when I’m photographing this exhibit can only be described by what the German philosopher Rudolf Otto describes as the ‘Numinous’ in his book The Idea of the Holy. This is truly a spiritual experience for me. I read about the eclipse and the red moon, did some quick calculations and found that I should have about 15 minutes to capture the moon just before it set behind the exhibit. This event will not occur again until the mid-2030s. And you ask me ‘Why did you take this photo?’ The better question is ‘How could you not try to capture this photograph?’”

Troy Fields’ Choice, Bombs Away – Carl Henry, 60, took this photo in Machu Picchu, Peru. Carl said he wanted to capture the perfect photo of a llama with the site in the background. “I found it was a very frustrating and often comical challenge. Machu Picchu was crowded, and everyone wanted to take selfie-stick photos with a llama or even a photo of a llama with her favorite stuffed comic book character.” But when this girl came into his viewfinder with a friend snapping her photo, he ended up loving the shot, with the expression of the llama and the composition, with the other camera and image in the frame.

Michael Hart’s Choice, My Collar, It’s So Very Middle Class – Harry Buzek, 72, took this photo of Italian Greyhound Prissy at her favorite spot on the sofa. “She looked like she was posing for me. I wanted to capture the crooked ear, one up and one down. From the day she was brought home, this prim little Italian Greyhound sat and crossed her long slender legs in front of her, and looked down her nose at us. It seemed that she might be thinking, ‘Are you really my new adopted parents? I thought I might be adopted by a more noble family.’ At that moment she was dubbed ‘Prissy.’ Always graceful and elegant, she is almost inviting you to photograph her.”

Judges’ Bios

Master Craftsman photographer Carol Andrews loves to create the magic of a photograph. Over the last 20 years, her award-winning photographs have included exhibitions at Photokina in Cologne, Germany; Disney’s Epcot theme park and the International Masters Loan Collection of the Professional Photographers of America. Her work has been acquired by the Sherman Hines Museum in Nova Scotia, Canada.

She was inducted into Cameracraftsmen of America, an international photographic society with only 40 members; she was only the fourth woman in the society’s 95year history to be admitted. She teaches and judges photography and art internationally. “I enjoy expressing beauty and my love for life through a camera and sharing the images and stories with others. Michael Hart has been providing photographic images to leading corporations, design firms and advertising agencies for over 30 years. His assignments have taken him to 49 states and more than 30 countries. The newly elected mayor of Hunters Creek, David Wegner, spoke at the Hunters Creek Garden Club’s spring luncheon and installation that Rachel Messina and Jennifer Pine co-chaired at The Junior League. B

abies are fun. Babies are hard work. Babies don’t care if you haven’t slept in three days.

And sometimes, for a small percentage of the parent population, babies come in pairs.

This month, my own twins will turn 1, so I am dedicating this column to all the twin moms and dads out there.

Anyone reading this who has twins (or, if you are a twin) has heard these phrases: “My, you certainly have your hands full,” (I hear this at least once at every outing); “Are they twins?”; “Are they identical?” and “Better you than me.”

That last one can be replaced with the occasional “Bless your heart.”

Aside from these common comments heard from random strangers (confession: I may have been one of those strangers in the past, but I’ve since reverted and try my hardest not to stare at other twin parents awkwardly maneuvering through a doorway), being a parent to twins means a life of surprises.

Lauren Struzick, a marketing specialist at Texas Children’s Hospital, and her husband Danny, a project manager, were excited to be expecting a little one – one being the operative word. All of the doctor’s appointments had gone smoothly, revealing one, strong heartbeat.

Then, at Lauren’s routine 20-week ultrasound, they were hit with a bombshell. “[The ultrasound technician] discovered there were twins,” said Lauren. “Apparently, with identical twins, one can hide behind the other one.”

Lauren said at first they didn’t know how to react. They laughed, and they cried. They already had 2-year-old Molly, so they were to become parents to three. The couple welcomed healthy boys, Wyatt and Charlie, four months ago.

Travel Buzz Summer road trips with the kids

F

or the Sacks family and their friends the Corbitts, summer road trips are a longstanding tradition. For these travel buddies, the annual road trip is a plan-as-you-go affair.

For Cathy Johnson and her clan, last summer’s three-week meander through the American West was a first-time adventure. The Johnsons left little to chance, with Mom as a trip planner, booking reservations long in advance.

The theme has infinite variations, but there are few childhood memory-makers that carry a greater capacity for bonding and learning than the classic summer road trip.

Michelle Sacks, who runs the Safe Schools program for Crime Stoppers of Houston, teamed up in 2010 with her high school buddy, school counselor Amy Corbitt, for the first of what was to become a summer tradition. That time, it was a straight drive down I-10 to San Diego and back again, with lots of roadside attractions along the way. Michelle’s eldest, Olivia, was 7; her youngest, Bennett, was 4, the same as Amy’s daughter Hayden. They were gone for two weeks.

“We were talking about how great it would be for the kids to see the United States, so we said why not just do it? We literally threw them in the car and went,” she recalls. “The rule was, no electronics, and we booked as we went.

“That trip was a little more flying by the seat of our pants, but we did it very inexpensively and had a really good time.”

Highlights included a reenactment of a shootout at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, and driving through the towering dunes of White Sands National Monument. For Olivia, four years later, the beaches of San Diego don’t score a mention; instead, it’s the marvels of sliding down those magnificent sparkling dunes that stay with her.

Michelle still laughs at a moment from the West Coast. “We were leaving San Diego, and the kids wanted to see one more beach before we left. We saw a sign for La Jolla, and we’d never heard of it but it sounded good, so we took a turn.

“The kids were making funny noises and we said, ‘Stop that!’ The kids said, ‘We’re not doing anything!’”

found themselves 50 feet from a barking school of sea lions.

“Those are the fun and unexpected things you come across and experience when you road trip like that,” Michelle says. “You see a lot more than when you’re flying in.”

Some trips, of course, require more planning, and their trip to Yellowstone was like that – a classic journey that in many ways paralleled the maiden voyage of the Johnson clan.

Cathy Johnson, a local writer, decided to team up with her mother, Wenda Swenson, and plan a three-week adventure for Ethan and Lila, then 7 and 5 respectively. Husband Matthew Johnson, a stock trader, took a little time off work to catch up with them along the way.

“We hatched this idea about a year before we did it,” said Cathy. “I wanted my kids to experience the Great American Road Trip.”

Cathy and her brother had done a lot of road trips as kids; Wenda would pack them up every summer and they’d drive from Chicago, where Cathy grew up, to Maine. The trip Wenda and Cathy planned last year was epic: three weeks in the American West, crossing seven states before returning to Houston.

“We started small and said, ‘Let’s go see all these things,’ and we ended up with three weeks

of road trip. It was a lot – I would say that’s the upper limit.”

They started six months in advance. “My mother did all the planning, and she was amazing,” said Cathy. “Every day she mapped out where we were going to go, what our route was, things we might want to stop and see – she loved doing that, so it worked out well.”

They tried to keep the driving times reasonable, but it wasn’t always possible. “The first couple of days were really hard, 450 miles a day,” she recalls. Five-year-old Lila asked 13 times, “When are we going to get there?”

On the third day they arrived at their first destination: the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. The exotic Moorish-Russian fusion, a building decorated with “crop art,” was on Wenda’s life list. Unfortunately they arrived to find it partially under construction – but Wenda was unfazed.

“We just have to roll with it – this is what happens on road trips,” she said, in a bit of travel wisdom that was to come in handy later.

Next they headed west towards Mount Rushmore National Memorial, spending most of that day driving through the Badlands. Wenda had wisely tried to build time into each stretch of the journey, so they were able to stop along

the way and find unexpected treasures – like a little replica of an 1880s Western town, featuring dress-up costumes and memorabilia from the movie Dances With Wolves.

Mount Rushmore was worth the effort, Cathy said. “I’m still blown away by what a crazy concept it is to carve the faces of presidents into the side of a mountain,” she said. That’s where things started to go a little haywire. First, Lila got sick with a fever. They kept on going, heading to see the Crazy Horse Memorial, a massive carving of the Oglala Lakota warrior that will dwarf the heads of Mount Rushmore – if it is ever finished. Then it was on to Devils Tower National Monument, the strange striated formation featured in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and finally landing in Cody, Wyoming, gateway to Yellowstone National Park.

“That’s when we had the craziest day of our trip,” said Cathy. “We drove into Yellowstone, and ended up in the middle of a freak midsummer winter storm. We knew it would get cold, but not like this.” It was 32 degrees, raining, with snow on the ground, and they needed gear.

So the first stop at Yellowstone was at the little town of Fishing Bridge, where they stocked up on sweatshirts and raincoats.

“In the middle of the night I felt this hot foot pressing against my back. It was my son; he got the fever my daughter had.”

She gave him Advil and in the morning,

drove the kids down to the lodge for breakfast.

Ethan didn’t feel like eating. She got the kids back in the car to take him back for medicine, and the car made a funny noise but turned on.

Then she heard another noise. It was her son.

“Mom, I threw up on myself,” he said miserably. She hit the button to open the door, and the doors wouldn’t budge. “Mom, I threw up on myself again,” said her son – crying now. Finally she pried the door open and found Ethan sitting amid vomit everywhere – on the floor, on the carpet, even splattered on the door.

“It’s cold, it’s miserable, it’s raining, the car’s a mess – and the door’s broken. I’m in the middle of Yellowstone with a car full of vomit, and the battery is dead.”

A series of harrowing events ensued, involving multiple calls to a mechanic in Fishing Bridge, who, miraculously, had a battery for a Honda Odyssey. They got the battery, cleaned up the rest of the vomit and managed to salvage what was left of their trip to Yellowstone with a close encounter with bison in Hayden Valley, Mammoth Hot Springs, a night at Old Faithful and a “bear jam” (a traffic jam caused by a bear sighting).

The rest of the trip had its ups and downs, but no more breakdowns or upchucks. It was one superlative after another: moose-watching in Grand Teton National Park; zip-lining in the Wasatch Range near Park City, Utah; Fourth of July fireworks in Las Vegas with Daddy, whom

they picked up at the airport; Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns.

The Sacks and the Corbitts also took in Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone and Jackson Hole on one trip, but saved the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas for a different trip. One of their favorite stories involved little Hayden, who was listening carefully as the tour guide at the Hoover Dam told of the people who had died in the building of the dam. Later, gazing across the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, she uttered the words that have made their way into the family lore: “I wonder how many people died making this?”

Like the Johnsons, they found Vegas to be not the most kid-friendly destination; they just about bolted after an encounter with more seediness than they’d bargained for, but the next morning ended up finding some age-appropriate activities, like the gondola ride and the water show at the Bellagio.

“You have to take the good with the bad,” said Michelle. In retrospect, their stop in Vegas would end up being a quintessential part of the adventure. As with travel in general, the best advice was to relax and have fun with it, she said. “You just have to have a quirky sense of humor and go with the flow.”

I

’ve always been known to jump on the open road. In college, I would pick a spot on the map and just drive, shooting photographs along the way. I loved seeing small towns scattered throughout this great state. As you can imagine, I’ve eaten in my fair share of diners, cafes and dives: Tex-Mex in Palestine, barbecue in Onalaska, pizza in Terlingua, burgers in Mineola.

Brenham, located in Washington County, is just over an hour’s drive from Houston, making it a perfect weekend getaway. Mostly, Brenham is known for that little creamery, Blue Bell, but Washington County is making its own mark in the adult-beverage market. So, I set out over a recent weekend in search of these adult beverages, and then paired them with recipes from the Junior League of Houston’s cookbooks.

Pleasant Hill Winery is the oldest winery in Washington County. Pleasant Hill produces a variety of award-winning wines, ranging from Blanc du Bois to Sangiovese to port. I ended up leaving with a bottle of Collina Bianca, which is a white blend of Blanc du Bois and Muscat grapes that produces a dry, yet sweet, aromatic wine. Try pairing this wine with the Chopped Chicken Salad with Chipotle Lime Vinaigrette from Peace Meals. You can morph it into snack wraps by placing the salad into multigrain tortillas.

Just northeast of the Brenham airport is Windy Winery, with its offering of unusual wines. The Lady Lavender is a Blanc du Bois white wine infused with culinary lavender. The Jal Spice wine combines a semi-dry red wine with the warmth of jalapeño. Of course, I left with a bottle of Jal Spice because I knew I was going to make the Churrasco, a grilled South American steak, from Peace Meals. For this meal, I used flank steak, marinated overnight in the Jal Spice wine and served with chimichurri sauce. Note: I sliced the Churrasco into strips and placed them on skewers as an easy snack.

If anyone has been to Napa, you know you tend to get “wined out.” Brenham has a new MEMORIAL BUZZ JULY 2015 34

brewery called Brazos Valley Brewing Company. On tap were five beers, but the real winner for me was the Roots Radicals Double IPA. Roots Radicals is a West Coast-inspired India Pale Ale fortified with four different hops.

It’s a smooth, hoppy beer that pairs well with both the Black Bean Corn Salsa from Stop and Smell the Rosemary and the Avocado Tomatillo Salsa from Peace Meals. ith its 12-8 victory over the Coppell Cowgirls, the St. John’s School Mavericks captured theTexas Girls High School Lacrosse League championship, marking a remarkable 13 state titles for St. John’s in girls’ lacrosse.

“It was a tremendous state final between two teams that were undefeated against Texas opponents,” said Mavericks head coach Angie Kensinger.

“It was a really aggressive game against Coppell,” said Mavericks senior captain Kendall Bernard. “It was pretty feisty, but we have a really mentally tough team. I think that was a big part of our suc-

cess this year. Our chemistry was pretty unique.”

For Mavericks senior Nell Copeland, who’ll play college lacrosse at Northwestern, the title took on added significance given that her younger twin sophomore sisters Kate and Carson also play for the Mavericks. “I’ve been a part of three state championships here at St. John’s, and this one has to rank at the top. To celebrate the state titles with my sisters is incredible.”

With seven different players scoring in the title game (Kara Wollmers, Elizabeth Cregan, Alice Chambers, Lindsey McKone, Nell and Kate Copeland and Jessica Nyquist), plus, a great defense from goalie Winnie Brandfield-

Harvey, the Mavericks closed out the year with an undefeated 21-0 record.

“I think one thing it came back to was our depth across the lineup,” said Cregan. “We truly supported and trusted each other.

In tennis, it was another magnificent season for the Memorial Mustangs, capped off of by a Class 6A boys doubles state championship from the tandem of senior Sam Giammalva and junior Max Palmer. The victory also marked the third consecutive state title in boys doubles for Memorial.

“Sam and Max were the favorites going into state, but you still have to play to the very best of your abilities to win it all,” said Memorial ten-

nis coach Bud Booth. Giammalva will play tennis next fall for Texas A&M, while Palmer, a state-ranked junior, will be back for the Mustangs next season.

Memorial’s Tadhg Collins, who won the regional championship in boys singles, advanced to state, as did fellow Mustang Dane Esses.

Those two faced off earlier in the regional finals, where Collins defeated his Memorial teammate for the regional title. At the state tournament, Collins was eliminated in his quarterfinals match. “For us to send two singles players to state and also win the state doubles championship was pretty fantastic,” said Booth.

In Class 5A tennis, Stratford Spartan Josh Holloway became the first Stratford player ever to win a state championship in singles play. The Spartans senior, who will play for St. Mary’s University, capped off a brilliant career with a dominant straight-set victory in the championship finals. “It was a dream come true,” said Holloway. “Winning state was my No. 1 goal for a long time.”

In baseball, the Kinkaid Falcons won their first Southwest Preparatory Conference championship since 2006. At the SPC tournament, Kinkaid rallied in come-from-behind victories over St. Andrews and Episcopal, before defeating Dallas St. Mark’s 5-3 in the title game.

“It just shows the resiliency of this team,” said Falcons head coach Steve Mass. “Our senior

leadership is what really made a difference.”

That senior leadership included the Falcons trio of Will Gaus, Joe Beeler and Neal Bhatia.

“It means everything with this being the last year together for the three of us,” said Bhatia.

For Beeler, the championship was especially sweet after a disappointing season last year. “We thought we were going to win it all last year, and we had to settle for the Division 2 tournament.

That was kind of rough, but we came together and got it done.”

“It definitely meant a lot after coming up short the last couple of years,” added Gaus. “It just feels great to come out on top in our senior year.”

On the fast track, Lamar High School’s Julia Heymach capped of a simply spectacular sophomore season by winning gold medals in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs at the UIL Class 6A state track and field meet. In the 1,600 meters, Heymach’s winning time of 4:40.97 shattered the class record by a full three seconds.

With two years stillremaining in her varsity career, Heymach is on pace to make her mark as one of the great distance runners in Texas track and field history. “I’d love to ultimately place in the top three of the Nike Nationals for cross country,” Heymach said, “and also win national titles in the mile and 2-mile run.”

A little girl’s courage

W

hen I was 7, my 5-year-old sister, Nicole, was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a tumor of the brainstem.

Nicole, who made friends easily, was equal parts sugar and spice. When we found abandoned kittens, she fed and played with them every day. Along with a sweet personality, Nicole had an arsenal of quick-witted jokes, beat our father and grandfather repeatedly in Connect Four (no easy feat), and had a stubborn streak a mile wide. When we skied during winter break, Nicole kept pace with me. Her bright pink jacket was always in the edge of my vision.

She was more adventurous than I was. When the Make-A-Wish Foundation asked her what she wanted, she immediately said she wanted to

kiss a dolphin. I remember being afraid of their slick, torpedo-shaped bodies. But Nicole patted their slippery backs and kissed their snouts.

Eventually, the cancer took its toll. She had terrible headaches and double vision. It was hard for her to control her facial muscles, and eventually, her legs and arms. Little is known about why DIPG occurs. There is no cure.

Nicole’s optimism stayed constant through the worst times. Her faith inspired those around her. In fact, her faith grew. Every day she would pray for a little brother, knowing God would one day answer her prayers. Nicole died on Sept. 2, 2009, after 19 months of courage.

Curing DIPG could unlock effective treatment for all cancers. Nicole’s tissue was donated for research and hopefully will take us one step

closer to finding a cure.

Cancer did not define Nicole. She was an artist and a friend. I know she would have been a wonderful sister to our brother, Nathan, who was born three years after she passed. She inspired me to write this article and talk about something I normally wouldn’t have the courage to do. To learn more about DIPG, visit www.thecurestartsnow.org.

I

t’s been a year since we last talked hamburgers, my quintessential comfort food. A burger buddy of mine recently asked if we had run out of new burger spots to try. I firmly disagreed, and then embarked on a quest that resulted in several new great finds.

For me, it’s all about the meat. A good bun and accompaniments can help to make a great burger, but if the meat is over-seasoned, not flavorful, or not cooked to my liking, I am dissatisfied. So many of the places I enjoy grind their meat daily on-premise to ensure freshness and quality. In addition, the type of meat used has come a long way since the pressed hamburger patty of the 1960s. A burger also should taste as good as it looks.

When someone asks me about the best burger in Houston, I always give the same response. My personal favorite is the bacon cheeseburger topped with a fried egg on freshly baked challah at Stanton’s City Bites, 1420 Edwards Street in the First Ward, which was founded in 1961 as a grocery store. I’ve written about Stanton’s several times on my blog, eat-more-burgers.com.

Many new spots have sprouted up since last year. Revelry on Richmond, a sports bar at 1613 Richmond Avenue, offers some of the best-tasting burgers in Houston, with ingredients such as pickled onions, Sriracha mayonnaise and a pretzel bun. Longtime fave Yale Street Grill & Gifts at 2100 Yale Street in the Heights still offers old-fashioned griddle hamburgers in a pharmacy soda-counter setting. I can never resist ordering their classic cheeseburger and fries.

Beer Market Company Craft beer and American food Neighborhood: Memorial Heights With a sports-bar theme, Beer Market serves craft beers, specialty cocktails and, most important, very good burgers. I selected the Beer Market Burger with cheddar and bacon. This is a hand formed, half-pound, certified, Angusbeef patty served on a grilled, buttered, brioche bun with leafy lettuce and onion. After carefully “divorcing” the burger (a commonly used term for cutting the burger in half), I couldn’t help but comment on the perfectly pink center of my cooked-to-order (medium temperature) patty, which contrasted with a beautifully charred crust. Each flavor complemented the other without overpowering. While the brioche bun was a bit fluffy, the sweet taste was the perfect match to the charred taste of the burger. The bacon was flavorful and crispy, with oozingover-the-sides cheddar cheese presenting the right amount of sharpness. The shoestring sweet potato fries were crispy on the outside, with a

Dry Creek Café Buff Burger Burger bar Neighborhood: Spring Branch Buff Burger entered the Houston burger scene earlier this year, with a focus on being local, natural and sustainable. As I walked into Buff Burger, the pungent aroma of char-grilled meat filled the air. I walked up to the counter and placed my order for the Buff Burger, cooked medium, adding American cheese to the lettuce, onion, house-made pickles and private-label BB mayo. I added a side of sea salt-sprinkled Buff Fries to the order. It was only a matter of minutes before the pleasant server brought out my lunch.

The burger looked freshly prepared, and the fries were plentiful. The first bite confirmed that Buff made a good-tasting burger. The meat was prepared to order, and the slow dough challah bun added a nice sweetness to the salty taste of the lightly seasoned patty and spicy pickles. The fries were my favorite, thin-and-crispy variety coated with sea salt. While the overall burger experience was an enjoyable one, and a good value at $12, I would suggest they place the cheese on the patty as it is being grilled to allow it to melt even-

American comfort food Neighborhood: Heights A recent burger outing took me to Dry Creek Cafe in The Heights. When Chef Rishi Singh joined Dry Creek last year, his first task was to reinvent its burger menu. And, in my opinion, Chef Rishi has succeeded. After reading the mouth-watering descriptions, I chose the Bavarian Blue Burger – 100 percent Angus beef, buttery Chiriboga Blue cheese, cidercaramelized onion and apple-wood bacon. It made for a luxurious blend of flavors, topped with a sweet, bakery-fresh bun. The blue cheese was creamy, yet not overpowering, as it was married with the sweetly tangy onions and smoked bacon. Cut in two, the gentle pink center reflected a nicely cooked-to-medium patty. This was a near-flawless burger, matched with a side of tangy broccoli slaw. I appreciated the knowledgeable waiter, ready to offer suggestions and facts to back up his recommendations. Graffiti’s at Union Street Burgers, steaks and chops Neighborhood: First Ward This nostalgia-filled Washington corridor lounge and eatery serves craft beers, vintage cocktails and burgers. From the old signs and posters on the walls to the Astrodome memorabilia at the tables, this place felt like going back home. From their impressive retro-titled burger menu, I chose the 409ER – a classic burger with smoked cheddar, mixed greens, house-made pickles, tomato, grilled onions and bacon chunks. Service was a little slow on my visit, but since they make everything from scratch, including the bread and grinding the mixture of choice chuck with brisket and short rib, I figured some patience was in order. Their burger was good, but was a bit over-seasoned.

With several burgers to choose from, my selection was The Pancho – grass-fed Texas Akaushi beef, local jalapeño bacon, pepper-jack cheese, roasted jalapeño, homemade guacamole, fresh tomatoes, Bibb lettuce (not my favorite), and house-made pickles, served on a challah bun.

The presentation was simple yet creative, with green parsley pieces sprinkled on the plate and the burger. The cheese was nicely melted over the side of the glistening and juicy patty. The sweet bun contrasted with the jalapeño bite and pepper-jack cheese. Adding sides of beet chips and sweet potato fries only sweetened the deal.

Hughie’s Tavern & Vietnamese Grille Vietnamese food and craft beer Neighborhood: Lazy Brook/Timbergrove Driving through the Timbergrove/Lazy Brook area of town recently, I stumbled upon Hughie’s Tavern & Vietnamese Grille. This unassuming former Dairy Queen/Queen Burger spot is known for its Vietnamese specialties and impressive selection of craft beers. I was going to order a traditional banh mi sandwich, but my eyes focused on the Banh Mi Hamburger that was front and center on the menu. I thought: the best of both worlds. It was breathtaking. Hand-formed, houseground, Angus beef, topped with all the classic banh mi vegetables – shredded pickled carrots, cucumbers, sliced fresh (potent) jalapeños, leafy lettuce – accompanied evenly melted cheddar cheese and Vietnamese mayonnaise and topped by a nicely grilled and fluffy bakery bun. burger. Eagerly taking my first bite, I was greeted with a myriad of flavors and some spicy overtures as the jalapeños hit my tongue. Island Grill offers a varied menu that includes healthy entrees, Mediterranean favorites, smoothies, juices and, for me, an Angus beef burger. I customized my burger with the bakery-fresh wheat bun, cheddar cheese, fresh leafy lettuce, onion and light mayo. The thick and juicy meat came out sizzling, steaming and flavorful. A great place for families and kids, Island Grill now has three locations, Bellaire, Memorial and Tanglewood. JerryBuilt Homegrown Burgers Fast food Neighborhood: West University JerryBuilt Homegrown Burgers came onto the burger scene a few years back with a marketing campaign that brought crowds to its West University location, including this blogger. They offered free burgers for all during their first month of operation! Once the excitement of this new neighborhood eatery wore off, the burgers were simply not inspiring enough for me to return on a regular basis. Recently, I wondered if JerryBuilt Homegrown had made changes, and decided to see for myself. I was pleased to find that the burger is now rounder, filling out the entire circumference of the (daily) fresh-baked-on-premises bun.

Gastropub Neighborhood: Oak Forest This Oak Forest gastropub is conveniently located on a quiet Oak Forest street. A converted 1940s-era service station, Petrol Station has been neatly outfitted with a streamlined industrial look. You can choose to eat inside or enjoy their patio seating. Offering a nice burger selection, along with one of the best craft-beer menus in town, Petrol Station is a go-to burger choice for many local chefs. Their burgers are creative and delicious. Petrol Station offers two Angus-beef burgers – Petrol Pub Burger and The Rancor.

They also offer lamb and veggie options. I ordered The Rancor – half pound of Angus beef, plus cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, lettuce, red onion, pickles, tomato, light mayo and a fried egg on a nicely toasted Challah bun. The meat was perfectly prepared (their automatic temperature is medium-well; I suggest ordering medium) with a charred crusty texture (my favorite) driving the juices to the center of the flavorful patty. The burger is “super-sized” and should be cut in half to maintain full control of the experience. All burgers come with tasty hand-cut fries. If you live in Oak Forest, you are lucky, as you can walk over any time. Revelry on Richmond Sports bar Neighborhood: Montrose This popular Montrose-area sports bar, with large screen TVs on throughout the relaxed setting, has an impressive hamburger menu.

Perusing their selection had me salivating over burgers with house-made pickles and picked onions. The Regular was a freshly ground, 7ounce beef patty topped with cheddar cheese, shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, house-made pickles, pickled red onions and Sriracha mayonnaise on a freshly baked, crunchy, artisan bun.

This creative burger resembled a fine work of art.

The purplish, pickled red onions stared at me as if to say I dare you to resist. Of course I didn’t resist, promptly cutting that burger in half and taking my first bite. The flavor burst was quite amazing – the meat perfectly cooked to medium with that blackened, charred crust. The cheddar cheese melted into the patty with a nice gooey texture, but the punch came from the “Pickled Pair” (house-made pickles and pickled red onions) on the burger. The Sriracha mayo added

Weights + Measures Restaurant, bake shop and bar Neighborhood: Midtown This Midtown find has a great hamburger on its menu. A sleek retro bar with an inspired whiskey selection, Weights + Measures also has an inhouse bakery and restaurant. They bake their hamburger buns on-premise throughout the day. While it took a little while for my hamburger to arrive, I was quick to forgive the delay once I was presented with the Wood Grilled House Ground Beef Burger. This burger was the tall centerpiece of a white plate, accompanied by a side of house-made chips and a colorful splash of thinly sliced, sweet and spicy house-made pickles and other pickled vegetables, including cauliflower. Those thinly sliced, russet-potato chips were quite addictive, as was the pickled vegetable medley. The bun was nicely grilled in the middle, firm with a nice sweet taste and sesame and flax seeds adorning its top. The charred, crusted patty was topped with white cheese, greens and thinly sliced onions. There was no overpowering of flavors. Each ingredient complemented the other with perfect balance.

Craft beer and American classics Neighborhood: Heights Situated in a small Houston Heights strip center, Witchcraft Tavern has a comfortable and inviting atmosphere, with dishes such as truffle fries, burgers and salads. With so many creative burgers on the menu, the choice was not an easy one to make. Upon my server’s suggestion, I ordered the Stilton Burger, topped with candied bacon, sautéed mushrooms, balsamic onion and Stilton blueberry cheese. The burger presented was truly beautiful, with a tower of sautéed mushrooms adorning crispy, candied bacon on a thick, juicy, hamburger patty topped by a grilled bakery bun. The blueberry Stilton Cheese spread created a sharp, enjoyable contrast of sweet and tart flavors with every bite. The hand-cut fries were crispy on the outside, with a tender meaty center. This burger was delicious and savory, but for those who are less adventurous, Witchcraft Tavern also offers simpler hamburger options, each for $11.95. Yale Street Grill & Gifts Diner and gift shop Neighborhood: Heights The options for drugstore-counter burgers have become fewer through the years. Fortunately, one such place still exists at Yale Street Grill & Gifts. Walking into one of the oldest, if not the oldest, diner remaining in the city – it opened in 1923 – definitely took me back to the past. Everything about this diner is retro, as is the adjacent gift shop. While no longer filling prescriptions, Yale Street Grill can certainly fill mealtime needs, especially our burger needs. The old-fashioned cheeseburger was my selection, with onions, shredded lettuce, light mayo and smoky bacon topped on a grilled (top and bottom) bakery bun. It was classic in presentation, with hand-cut fries on the side. The meat was thin and mashed with a faint pink center, the lettuce was crunchy, the bacon was flavorful, and the evenly melted American cheese slice had a slightly sharp taste. For a true retro experience, Yale Street also offers fountain treats as well, including milk shakes and cherry-flavored sodas. Don’t suffer from heel pain

A minute with Maisie

If your ability to get around is limited by heel pain, you could be among a large group of people who suffer from what is known as heel pain syndrome. Heel pain syndrome, also known as plantar fasciitis, is caused by a strain of the plantar fascia muscle, a fibrous band which runs from the heel to the front of the foot. If your foot moves incorrectly, the plantar fascia may become strained.

Heel spurs can form as a result of this.

You may experience pain in the bottom of your foot, especially first thing in the morning. Pain usually occurs on the inside of the foot, near the spot where your heel and arch meet. Pain may lessen after a few steps, but will come back after rest.

Often, the discomfort of plantar fasciitis can be relieved with appropriate foot support. Treatment for this condition can range from the use of orthotics to cortisone treatments and surgery. Surgery is only recommended when conservative treatment has failed to relieve the discomfort. Heel pain and other foot pain can cause great discomfort, limiting your everyday activities. Be good to your feet, and they will be good to you! Don’t hesitate to bring your heel pain or other foot ailments to us for relief.

Many clients ask me, “At what age can a child decide with which parent he or she primarily wants to live?” The Texas Family Code provides that the best interest of the child is the paramount consideration so while the child can express his or her desires with the judge in chambers, the child’s desires are not binding on the court. Obviously, the older and more mature the child, the more weight a court may give the child’s desires. Parents should always refrain from discussing this issue with their children, no matter their age, as it puts the children squarely in the middle of a custody battle and may emotionally damage the children for years to come. If you are planning to travel without your children this summer and are leaving them in the care of family, you may want to consider signing an authorization agreement. It may be particularly important if the trip is long distance or for an extended amount of time.

An Authorization Agreement for Nonparent Relative is a legal document whereby one or both parents is/are authorizing a relative to perform acts, such as consenting to medical treatment. Those individuals who are allowed to be given the authorization are grandparents, adult siblings or an uncle or aunt. This agreement never affects the rights of the parents or legal guardians, and it does not mean that the relative has custody of the child. However, the document may be useful so that the relative can provide medical care for the minor child while the parents are away.

If the relative will be taking care of the minor child for an extended period of time, the authorization agreement also allows parents to give relatives powers such as enrolling the child in day care, signing up the child for recreational activities, or obtaining a driver’s license for the child.

What to read this summer

H

ouston, we need a break. Something light to foil the past few months. Enter summer and our annual book recommendations from readers. We don’t promise total fluff, but at this point, heck if we aren’t geared up for any kind of escape, be it inspiration, suspense or good clean fun.

And that’s exactly what one reader’s new book is – fun. Native Houstonian Katherine Center has just released her fifth novel, Happiness for Beginners, to great reception. The book, about a recently divorced woman and her wilderness survival-course adventure, is nothing short of delightful. People all over town are smiling as they recommend it to one another – the books have flown off the shelves at Target.

That’s not just because Katherine happens to have a history here, but it doesn’t hurt.

A graduate of St. John’s School, Katherine says she started writing stories at a young age.

One of her most-cited stories involves the author having to make the decidedly tough decision of which member of Duran Duran (remember the ’80s pop group?) she should run off with.

Of course, they all fell madly in love with her after a chance drop by her childhood home.

Katherine’s more grown-up stories – the five that have been published by big houses and the one that’s subsequently been optioned for a movie – stay true to that charm. Each one is, in some way, about love, resiliency and the evolutions of our most cherished relationships. They’ll have you smiling and cheering for the heroine from cover to cover. The Dallas Morning News said, “Reading a book by Katherine Center is a lot like having a long lunch conversation with a good friend.” Who doesn’t need that?

When we asked Katherine what she would recommend to Houstonians weary of rain and heat, here’s what she suggested: Attachments: A Novel, by Rainbow Rowell. “I just discovered Rainbow Rowell this year,” Katherine says. “She writes delicious, satisfying novels about flawed, funny people you can’t help but root for.

Devoured this in a day.”

READING UP For a great summer escape, slow down and read up on some titles recommended by your neighbors.

Amazon says “will supply you with interesting facts and cocktail chatter for a year or more.”

Katherine’s take: “Tied with A Walk in the Woods (soon to be a movie!) for my favorite Bryson book of all time. It … just overflows with Bryson-esque trivia, warm humor and remarkable historical tidbits about this great and hilarious country of ours.”

For a dose of pure humor, Katherine backs Bossypants, by Tina Fey. “There might not be anyone funnier than Tina Fey. This book stays hilarious, insightful and wry through read after read.”

Barb Fowler, a mom of three and retired attorney, shared the books – among the many she’s read – that have stuck with her the most in recent months. Topping her list: The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates, by Wes Moore. The book tells the story, first-hand, of two boys with the same name growing up fatherless in similar underserved neighborhoods in Baltimore. One – the author – grew up to be successful by all accounts.

The other is serving a life sentence for murder.

“I just finished reading this and really can’t stop thinking about it,” Barb says. “It is a thought-provoking book about all the many

influences that shape us into the people we are.”

For young adults and grownups alike, Barb recommends Popular: How a Geek in Pearls Discovered the Secret to Confidence, by 16-yearold, Brownsville, Texas, native Maya Van Wagenen. Barb describes the book as “a fun read about [Maya’s] eighth grade experiences putting into practice the recommendations of a 1950s book about how to be popular. Surprisingly wellwritten; a great message for young girls and an inspiration for aspiring young writers.”

Where’d You Go, Bernadette: A Novel, by Maria Semple, is Amber Tabora’s pick for a fun summer read. Amber, vice president for marketing and public relations at Texas Children’s Hospital, says the book “introduces you slowly to a woman named Bernadette and her fascinating past that has led her to be the woman she is today, which you start to wonder about after only a few pages.” Bernadette is quirky and fun; the novel is a page-turner, reading like suspense, in a witty way. “At the root, it’s about the family, relationships and rediscovering your passion in life,” Amber says. “It will entertain and uplift you. I promise.”
