PUBLISHER’S NOTE This month’s magazine has a lot I can relate to. There’s Tracy Barnett’s Travel Buzz column on Asheville, N.C., and Buzz residents who have fallen in love with the city. Because our oldest son lives in the area, we’ve traveled to Asheville twice this past year. We all loved it too – even our son’s dog. It turns out Asheville is one of the most dog-friendly cities in the U.S. Next is Andria Frankfort’s article on phones at the dinner table. I am not a fan of electronic devices at the table. When our kids were little I became so aggravated one night at dinner that I opened the back door and threw my son’s Game Boy into our neighbor’s yard. Over the top, I know. (I got it back.) But you get the sentiment. Finally, Andria’s Back Porch column about smart speakers, or digital assistants. I’m already feeling technology overload. So when I received an Amazon Echo for my birthday last month, I had mixed emotions. I’ve yet to set it up, but at least I haven’t thrown it over the fence. Yet. michael@thebuzzmagazines.com

Your letters, thoughts, opinions Library on wheels Very seldom in life does a group have the opportunity to do something as special as bring a super library-on-wheels to life.

The Curiosity Cruiser [Words on Wheels: Curiosity Cruiser gives gift of reading, by Deborah Lynn Blumberg, December 2017] provided an astonishing number of talented Houstonians the privilege of working together on a project dear to many of our hearts.

It is important to us that you understand our gratitude for helping us reach a larger audience, allowing us to reach new heights in being heard and seen as we embark on a ground-breaking adventure.

Deborah Blumberg visited the Curiosity Cruiser on numerous occasions, joining us for the unveiling and its inaugural visit to a local elementary school. She experienced first-hand the value of our customized bookmobile, as delighted young children stepped into the magical wonderland of our library to receive books of their very own to take home to love and read over and over. Her ability to put words to not only the children’s feelings, but also the founders and creators, reveals not only her talent but her passion for reading.

The Curiosity Cruiser is helping to reduce the obstacles children may have in collecting books for their home. It not only helps develop literacy skills, but stimulates their imagination and encourages brain development.

This month alone [January 2018] the Curiosity Cruiser has made 32 public appearances in both schools and the Houston community. We know this is only the beginning, but we are eternally grateful to you for your interest and boldness in joining us as we build a Houston legacy.

Veggie noodle fan I thoroughly enjoyed reading your article on veggie noodles [Veggie Noodles: Healthy options for the New Year, by Andria Frankfort, January 2018]. As a veggie obsessed health-conscious college student, zoodles are my go to meal. I have found if you cook the extras first (like onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, etc.), then add the zoodles for four minutes, they come out perfect every time. Then add a protein, and it's the best meal ever!

Thrift Shopping in Bed My Goodwill online-auction elixir

I

t was an ugly affair. Two weeks of low-grade fever, bronchitis and a chest-rattling cough that robbed me of restful sleep. My head was an overstuffed pillow set to implode.

I’d taken to bed with a wad of tissue, my 21pound cat Bart and NyQuil, hoping to succumb to the haze of the cherry-flavored swill. I start surfing my iPhone, reading about cool eBay finds.

A comment jumps off the page. “If you really like the thrill of the hunt,” wrote the author, “there’s always Goodwill’s online auction site.”

What? I’m an uber-thrifter and didn’t know the non-profit thrift store solicited bids. I googled it. Immediately. Registered and created a password at shopgoodwill.com. Then I scrolled items. For hours…

Nasal passages cleared with the adrenaline rush. At my fingertips was an eclectic mix of weird, nostalgic, sometimes rare and often hilarious items culled from drawers, closets and garages all over America, deposited for my bidding pleasure.

Oh, the oddities. A grab bag of 12 insects encased in acrylic, a velvet painting of a smoking monkey, a taxidermied squirrel dressed as a cowboy.

A pair of Chinese Yin-Yang stress relief bell balls up for bid might have helped auction diehards going full throttle into the fire. The heat was intense around a diamond and ruby ring, $5,200 at last glance with 19 bidders.

I’m guessing those passionate bidders feel pretty bad about missing out on my sterling silver porcupine brooch that cost me $8.99. My loot also includes a vintage Karu Fifth Avenue necklace, circa 1940s, for $39. I’ve seen the same make and style of necklace on eBay and Etsy for $200 and $265, respectively.

I won a few other vintage jewels, all for less than $10 plus shipping, and I scored with 1-cent shipping on a couple of them. (Tip 1: Take the time to check out Goodwill’s 1-cent shipping items. You can end up paying two or three times an item’s price in shipping and handling charges.)

But I happily paid $9.50 to ship my $14.99 penguin, a 1940s wind-up toy in orange bow tie that opens its beak and flaps its wings. I trusted that its description contained a decimal point error. It was listed as 52.5 inches by 4 inches. I BELLAIRE BUZZ MARCH 2018 8

had no idea what I’d do with an absurdly skinny wind-up penguin topping 4 feet.

The piece de resistance, my score at $29.99, is a 35-by-25 inch 1960s figurative oil painting of a ginger-haired woman sitting at her kitchen table, legs crossed, in lime green slacks and black pointy-toe flats. “Morning is for Dreaming,” it’s called. I was smitten.

Olivia Keville West U teen in new sitcom

A

t 5, Olivia Keville put on plays with stuffed animals for her Mom, Dad and two older brothers in their two-story traditional home in West U. By age 8, she was asking for acting lessons. Now, at 15, Olivia has been cast as “Mae” in the new prime-time sitcom Splitting Up Together, which premieres on ABC this month.

With long, brown hair and expressive eyes, Olivia looks like the teen she is but sounds older, speaking thoughtfully.

“I did a lot of local theater with Main Street Theater,” says Olivia, who went to West University Elementary School for kindergarten and first grade before attending St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School. She wanted to practice acting like her brother Max, now 21, practiced baseball. She worked with coach Mari Ferguson and eventually took a workshop with John D’Aquino, a California acting coach, who said she had talent and encouraged her to attend his camp in LA. Brother Jake, now 19, had a film internship in LA at the same time, so the family decided to visit and let Olivia attend the camp, where she was noticed by an agent. The family learned there are two main episodic seasons for casting every year. Olivia asked if she could spend time in LA for both.

“She said, ‘Mom, I am going into my eighthgrade year and I don't want to do regular high school. I want to give this acting one year of my full attention,’” says Sandra. “Olivia has really good instincts, and we are all in this together. I am married to an attorney engineer, and I am the free spirit and I thought: If you don't listen to your kid and don't give them the opportunity you are doing them a disservice.” Olivia and Sandra went to auditions for three weeks that October and then returned in February. Olivia kept getting called back for Splitting Up Together.

“There was me and one girl who looked like Nancy in Stranger Things and one who looked like a supermodel. I did get nervous because I had HITS and Main Street Theater and ‘school play’ on my resume.” Despite momentary nerves, Olivia nailed the callback. The directors and producers (Ellen DeGeneres is one) booked Olivia for the pilot.

Rodeo Families Generations of volunteers

W

hen it comes to building dynasties, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo should claim a patent on the formula. Eighty-six years of effort – and a whole lot of donated talent – have generated a successful rodeo empire which has become Houston’s centerpiece festival, agricultural show and concert series. The massive nonprofit effort, which funds college scholarships, is fueled by a volunteer base of 33,000, led by a staff of 100-plus employees.

Whether volunteering on one or more of the 108 committees or simply by buying a ticket to a show, most everyone in this city has been touched in some way by HLSR. Some of those who have been around since the beginning have three or four generations of family members who have followed in their footsteps.

Take the Smith clan of Memorial. They make up three generations of lifetime members.

John O. Smith and his wife, Judy, joined the Rodeo in 1972. Their son, Ryan, was given a lifetime membership when he was just 1 week old, a tradition he and his wife, Jill, have gifted to their 8-year old daughter, Lillie, and 6-yearold son, Pearson.

“It’s fun to see the second and third generation come through,” said John O., whose list of accomplishments is longer than a Sunday sermon. He owns an oil and gas consulting firm, JOS Energy, and his HLSR resume is capped by a term as top dog, chairman of the board from 2003 to 2005. He says watching the evolution of Rodeo dynasties has been exhilarating.

“I can think of a lot of people who are in the same situation as mine. There are a lot of my friends who started out as committeemen who now have sons and daughters and grandchildren coming up and joining the Jr. Rodeo committee (JRC). I’ve met a lot of good people, and I’ve made really good friends. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is family.”

The devotion is matched by that of his son, Ryan, who lives in the nearby neighborhood of Briargrove with his family. By day he is managing director at Wortham Insurance, but he spends many hours serving the Rodeo, currently sitting on the board of directors and both the BELLAIRE BUZZ MARCH 2018 12

“My son’s funeral was during opening week of the show. There were 1,200 people at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. It was standing room only. I never realized I knew that many people until I looked around that room, and that church was full of Rodeo people.”

Fellow volunteers wore black bands on their badges. People the Jordans had never met offered comfort and support. Teresa says the outreach provided the tonic she needed to endure, and her work at the rodeo offered a precious avenue for filling the void left by heartbreaking loss. She joined the Jr. Rodeo committee that same week. Driven by their son’s love of the Rodeo, the Jordans’ ongoing involvement has grown into something bigger than either could have imagined.

“Bill and I were trying to think what we could do. Our son’s love of the show was as strong as ours. We wanted to do something that would continue his memory in a very everlasting way but continue to have an impact. So we started the William Lewis Jordan IV Memorial Endowment. We do scholarships through that every year, and it enables Will to continue to touch and will continue to touch someone’s life

in a very meaningful way.”

The endowment started at $60,000 and funds a $20,000 scholarship each year. Well on its way to becoming a self-fulfilling endowment through continued contributions, the fund has awarded eight scholarships in her son’s name – eight names that Teresa knows off the top of her head. Her home is decorated with the students’ pictures.

“It’s the funnest day of the year to go to that scholarship banquet, and you meet your scholarship student and their family. They’re studying biomedical engineering or geophysics. One of these kids is going to come up with a cure for cancer one day, and our son, Will, and our family will have been a part of that child’s journey.

How cool is that!”

Their youngest son, Cameron, is also a former member of the JRC. The now-23 year old currently is a member of the Sheep and Goat committee, his commitment unwavering even though he goes to college in San Antonio. He comes back for meetings and spends Spring Break and holidays getting in his volunteer hours. (Volunteer requirements range from committee to committee, but most require attending at least 3-4 meetings a year and working several long shifts during the Rodeo.)

“I feel a responsibility to give back especially after how involved my family is,” said Cameron.

“I will always be part of the Rodeo. I'm proud of my parents for what they have done and keeping my brother's memory alive. He was not only my brother but my friend and a great person, and it’s special that he can continue to touch many more lives.”

“It’s something that we do as a family,” said Teresa. “We all have that connection. It’s a strong legacy we’re building, and we hope this endowment will still be around long after Bill and I are gone.”

HLSR will award more than $26.7 million to support education this year. Since 1932, $450 million has been awarded. Currently, more than 2,000 students are on Rodeo scholarships.

With 45 years of his life dedicated to the Rodeo, John O. Smith likes to give newcomers advice.

“I give speeches out here to rookies from time to time, and I like to point out all the exit doors.

And I warn them if you hang around the show very long, you get hooked. It changes how you set your social schedules. It changes your vacation times. It changes your life.”

Then he closes. “Welcome to the family.”

ven though you won’t hear many people say it’s okay to talk or text on cell phones at the dinner table, there sure is a lot of it going on.

Seems like we could walk into any restaurant at any time and find at least one table of diners looking at blue screens instead of each other.

How do we bring back the emphasis on eye-toeye connection?

“We have lost the art of conversation,” says family law attorney Wendy Burgower. To reclaim it, Wendy says, when she puts a phone on the table, she’ll say, “’Do you mind if I put this phone here, as I am expecting an important call?’ Or, if they have theirs on the table, I ask, ‘Is everything okay?’ This starts a great discussion about how we need to put them away and enjoy our time together.”

In a twist on Wendy’s version of phone etiquette, one neighbor, a writer, and her friends have made a game of it. When they sit down to a girls’ lunch, everyone turns their phone on and puts it face-up in the middle of the table. The first one to succumb to the phone temptation and pick up pays for everyone’s lunch.

Parenting coach Randi Rubenstein, herself a mother of three, agrees with the no-phones-atthe-table policy. “People before tech is our rule,” she says. “If people are playing on phones at the table, and it’s one of my kids, I remind them of the rule.” Randi calls staring at screens instead of into eyes nocializing. Raising the stakes beyond the table, her car is also a no-phone zone. “If the driver can’t be on the phone, then neither can the passengers.”

Aside from the question of the appropriateness of phones at the table, dinnertime is often the only time when families connect without interruption. “Dinnertime has always been pretty sacred at our house with everyone waiting until everyone else gets home before the four of us sit down to eat together,” says jewelry designer Tracy Pesikoff. “We have always used this time to discuss news of our days, highlights, lowlights, upcoming happenings. If phones make it to the table, they are in pockets or on the side of the table turned over. On the rare occasion that they are used, it is probably because we are

discussing specific plans and need clarification about a time or place. Or, if we need to text someone to ask a specific question about what we are currently discussing then it is okay.

Basically, a phone is only briefly and swiftly used if it specifically pertains to the conversation that the four of us are having at the table.”

And it’s not just kids who are the culprits during family dinner. “Can you believe that we implemented the no cell phone rule at the dinner table in order to get [husband] Wayne off his Blackberry years ago?” says Stork Club owner Heather Kearney. “It was long before the kids even had cell phones. We’ve kept that rule all these years and it has worked well.

[Daughter] Bridget actually nudged me the other night to see a family of five behind us at Molina’s, where every member of the family was on their phone in some capacity, mom and dad included, and no one was talking at all. Guess our point was made.”

But where there are rules, there are always exceptions. “Our rule is no phones at the dinner table because it’s family time.” says Bonnie

Winograd, whose sister’s family has been living with her own since Hurricane Harvey. She adds, “Our only exception to the rule is HQ,” referring to the wildly popular, super-fast online trivia game that dominates a million-and-a-half smartphones twice a day with the promise of miniscule cash prizes … and glory.

“Not everyone knows all the answers [to the trivia questions], so as a group working together you do much better. [Brother-in-law] Marc answers the medical questions, [daughter] Nicole and the boys [nephews] answer the pop questions.” Bonnie’s parents, Lynn and Willie Goldberg, host traditional Jewish Friday night Shabbat dinners at their home and always have implemented a strict no-phone rule for the night. “But we told them it’s trivia and often historical, and then the host [of HQ] said, ‘Shabbat Shalom,’ one Friday night, so now they allow it!”

Of the family of nine, Bonnie and her sister Hayley Feldman are the only ones not playing.

“Because we’re in the kitchen cleaning or something. But we still try to throw out answers from the kitchen!”

Meet a Neighbor Dick Brooks How well do you know your neighbors? Get acquainted with fellow Buzz residents in our Q&A column: Meet a Neighbor.

W

hen Dick Brooks retired from sales 20 years ago, he became a reverse snowbird. Instead of heading south for the winter, he went north to Colorado. Now 80 years old, Dick spends each winter skiing in Durango, adding to his collection of giant slalom ski-racing medals.

Since 2006, Dick has competed in the annual NASTAR national championship, winning two silver medals and one bronze medal. This month, he will compete at the championship in Squaw Valley, Calif., as one of about 125 skiers in the 80-84 age group.

About 10 years ago, Dick was introduced to NASTAR by his daughter-in-law’s father, who was a competitor himself. After seeing the course, which starts out at the steepness of an expert-level black diamond run, Dick gave it a try and then continued to race each day the course was open. “Eventually, I got a letter in the mail that I qualified for the national championship. I thought it was a scam; they wanted $200 to register. But I did it, and have done it every year since.”

Standing 5 feet, 7 inches tall, Dick is an aggressive skier. He says he is also aggressive off the slopes and doesn’t hold back from loudly expressing his opinions, but saves his softer side for his eight grandchildren. “I’m always hugging on them, and some of them don’t like that, but it’s my prerogative.”

While Dick spends the season in Colorado, his wife, Claire, stays in Houston, volunteering.

She does not share his enthusiasm for freezing temperatures, but braves the cold each winter to bring the grandchildren to join their grandfather on the slopes.

Your first “job” led to your love of skiing.

How did hanging around a golf course turn into snow skiing?

When I was about 8 or 9, I hung out at the golf course in Montclair, New Jersey. I’d find golf balls and sell them to the golfers. The golfers were gone during the winter, and my dad bought BELLAIRE BUZZ MARCH 2018 16

me a pair of long wooden skis from the local sporting goods shop. I skied from the third green all winter long.

After that, I didn’t ski much until I was around 40 years old and started skiing with our kids. I was not talented. Skis, at that time, were more difficult to turn, and you have to do that in order to slow down or stop. Then, when I was about 60, I retired and got into skiing more seriously. The equipment was much more modern by then and allowed for easy turning, so I finally felt comfortable.

NASTAR ski racing is a big part of your life. What’s it like to compete?

I really enjoy it. Giant slalom is where you weave in and out of flags, which are called gates.

When you start at the booth at the top, it kicks off the timer and you finish at the bottom through a sensor that stops the clock. The fastest five times in each age group, from different ski resorts, qualify for nationals.

At 80 years old, how do you find peers who ski?

A while ago I joined a Houston ski club, but found that the majority of people were my kids’ ages. I had little in common with them. Then, I found a 70-plus ski club based in Rhode Island [70plusskiclub.org]. I do a one-week trip with

them each year, in different places. This year we went to Breckenridge. I also meet people from all around the country at competitions.

What about injuries?

Oh yeah. If you ski, you will get hurt eventually. I had a meniscus tear and had to have surgery, but they couldn’t really repair it. So the next best thing is I have a fancy type of brace that gives my knee some support and allows me to still ski. It’s not painful, but sometimes I wake up a little stiff.

How do you stay busy, outside of ski season?

I build kaleidoscopes. We used to own storage locations in Austin, and people would move their stuff out and leave things behind. One time, someone left a kaleidoscope-making book.

So, I took a glass-cutting class at an art studio and started building scopes. I make them for the grandkids, and give them away as quick as I make them.

Do you consider yourself a daredevil?

No. Skiing is good, because I’m a lazy guy. I don’t like to exercise. When I’m home in Houston, I walk about a mile or so every morning, trying to maintain weight. But when I ski I don’t have to walk, and I can eat like a horse.

Parks for small ones

Buzz Baby is a column about life with little ones.

H

ouston has a plethora of parks to pick from. If you’re heading out the door this spring for some fresh air with your little one, there are some elements you may want to consider when choosing a park that’s a good fit for babies and toddlers.

Personally, I couldn’t function as a mom of three young children without playgrounds and parks. My 3-year-old twins and 1-year-old daughter love the outdoors. Some of the best parenting advice I can recall receiving was: “When things are tough, Mom, just go outside.”

Boy, is that true.

When I enter a park (that’s fully fenced), I know I can sit down on a blanket, enjoy the nice weather (if we have it that day) and relax a little while my kids play and run free. It’s a plus when it’s equipped with artificial turf so my younger daughter Georgia doesn’t put grass, rocks or sticks in her mouth. It’s even better when we’re at a park specifically for wee ones, so my kids won’t be in the middle of a game of tag with older kids.

It’s also important to find baby- and toddlerfriendly parks that are open during weekday hours, for those desperate times (vs. heading to a school’s playground or park, off-limits during school hours).

And it’s not all about the play equipment.

Lauren Israel, a mom of 2, says that when she brought her son Ethan to parks, he would explore and clean up rather than play on the actual play sets.

“All [Ethan] used to do was chase the birds and pick up trash and throw it away,” she said.

“Maybe that’s why he has such a good immune system now. It was so frustrating at the time, but I look back and laugh about it. He still loves chasing the birds.”

aybe it’s the twang of bluegrass in the air, fresh as the farm-to-fork food on your plate. Maybe it’s the sunsets that light up the blue mountain vistas that stretch for miles; maybe it’s the hundreds of local artists and the thousands who come from afar to soak in the colors and the culture. Whatever it is, Asheville, N.C., has captured the nation’s heart.

To the Hablinskis and the Holmeses, Asheville is as much home as Houston. Both couples fell so in love with this unique piece of Americana that they decided to buy a second home there. They gave us an insiders’ view of the place Lonely Planet called “Appalachia’s most surprising city,” putting it at the top of its Places You Need to See in 2017.

Dorothy Hablinski grew up visiting her maternal grandmother in Asheville, where she had moved. Dorothy herself grew up in Brownsville, nurturing an appreciation of authentic culture and country life instilled by her ranching family.

So when she would escape to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, she was fascinated by the culture she discovered there.

“I loved the mountain people,” she recalls.

“They were a very poor people but very amazing, and my grandmother would take me up to the mountains to meet the mountain people: ladies who smoked pipes and did all kinds of interesting things and made all kinds of fantastic handwork. I remember going to the Henderson County market where the country people would bring their wares. I remember picking sweet peas in her backyard, and it’s just a magical place.”

She grew up reading books about the region – a favorite was Christy – Catherine Marshall’s classic about a girl who leaves a life of luxury in Asheville to teach in a mission school in a poverty-stricken Appalachian town.

Dorothy’s grandmother eventually sold her home and moved to San Antonio, and her connection with those mountains was temporarily lost. When Dorothy met her future husband, Mark, she was delighted to learn that he loved the Carolinas, as well. He’d been on several golfing trips there and had been struck by the beauty of the place.

“I just fell in love with North Carolina – one,

the people are so incredibly friendly there, they remind me of people in the South – because it basically is the South,” said Mark. “No. 2, it’s green.”

The Blue Ridge Mountains are among the oldest in the world, and rainfall is plentiful,

making for a lush, waterfall-filled landscape that inspire artists, poets and writers.

Peggy Holmes and husband Brad were living in St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands when they got married. Peggy was working for the owner of the Buccaneer Hotel on that island,

and he was part of the gentrification of downtown Asheville, where he bought the historic Haywood Park Hotel. “He told us, ‘I’ll give you two days of my hotel for your wedding gift, but you need to write it up for me,” she recalls. “So that was our introduction to Asheville.”

They loved the town and the Blue Ridge Mountain region, and on their 17th wedding anniversary, her husband surprised her with a trip. “He had his hand over my eyes until I was on the plane – and he surprised me with a trip to Greenville, where we rented a car and drove up to Asheville. And that’s when we started looking for a house.”

The Holmeses are big outdoorspeople, and they have loved hiking in all seasons in DuPont Forest in neighboring Transylvania County – home to some of the region’s most beautiful waterfalls, including Hooker, High, Triple and Bridal Veil Falls. They’ve climbed to the top of spectacular Mount Pisgah in the Pisgah National Forest. Asheville is also a favorite destination for whitewater rafters, and the

Holmeses have rafted the Nolichucky and the Nantahala, the North and South Toe, and the French Broad, which runs right through town.

Like most Ashevillians, the Holmeses and the Hablinskis have their favorite bear-encounter stories. Peggy’s favorite features another Bellaire resident, Carla Buerkle. “Carla and I were hiking off Blue Ridge Parkway, and we went between a mama bear and her cubs,” she recalled. “We saw the cubs first; they were up on a rock, then we stopped – then I saw the mom stand up and I said, ‘Uh-oh… back up. Clap your hands and back up.’ That was the first time I’ve actually been out in the woods and came that close to a mama bear and her cubs – she was just about 15 feet away. That was kind of a neat moment; it turned out the way I wanted it to.”

The Hablinskis, who live on a mountainside in a home designed by Mark’s architect brother, didn’t even have to step outside to see a bear.

It was their son Phillip’s first visit, and he was on the downstairs porch. “He looked down and was shocked because it was like an 800-

pound black bear – and he didn’t know whether to run inside,” said Mark. “When he ran in to grab his phone to take a video, the bear had already lumbered off.”

Other wildlife frequently make an appearance in the picture windows overlooking the forest, as well. “When we had all that snow recently, Dorothy happened to see a huge buck slowly sauntering through the backyard with snow up beyond his knees and reaching up and eating off a tree,” Mark recalled. “It was magical.”

Close encounters of the natural kind are among the best of what Asheville has to offer, but there are cultural offerings, as well. “Artsy Asheville,” as Lonely Planet has dubbed it, is an architectural showcase and home to galleries and studios.

Architecture enthusiasts marvel at the magnificent Grove Arcade, one of the first and biggest shopping centers in the South; the Spanish Renaissance-style Basilica of St. Lawrence and the jaw-dropping 250-room Biltmore Estate home, said to be the largest private home in the (continued on page 24) United States.

MOUNTAIN VIEW The Blue Ridge Mountains are among the oldest in the world, and rainfall is plentiful, creating a waterfall-filled landscape. If the arts are your thing, the River Arts District alone is home to more than 200 artists – that’s a mile-long stretch of industrial and historical buildings along the French Broad River turned into artist studios, galleries, restaurants, cafes and even a brewery.

And if you’d rather get your art fix on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Southern Highland Craft Guild’s Folk Art Center showcases traditional and contemporary crafts of the Southern Appalachians. Or get behind the scenes with an intimate artist-led studio walking tour.

Peggy, who is an art teacher, says, “People actually support the fine arts, and it’s refreshing.

In Houston – I don’t have anything against making money – but I really feel like in Asheville they’re more in tune with what it takes to create something.”

With its locavore, farm-to-table food ethic and more than its share of James Beard connections, Asheville’s “Foodtopia” has caught the fancy of writers from Zagat and others; and Fortune was probably not the first to call the

town one of America’s best new cities for beer lovers for its microbrewery scene. And Thrillist dubbed the city one of America’s 12 Great Music Cities.

But for dog lovers, Asheville is all of that and more, because four-footed friends are welcome virtually everywhere. The Travel Channel recently named the town one of the nation’s Top 5 Dog-Friendly Towns. Dog-friendly venues range from the elegant (Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar) to the laid-back (Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company) and Aloft Hotel and its bar. At Hotel Indigo, it seemed like every guest there recently had their dog with them. Many restaurants have a dogfriendly patio. And where else can you find Three-Dog Bakery, the original artisan bakery exclusively for dogs? Or, if you need to tour a site that doesn’t allow pets, a pet sitter like Happy with Cappy is an option.

For Dorothy, whose every trip to Asheville takes her back to her childhood wonderland, the most important aspect is the natural beauty and

the authentic culture that has sprung from that landscape. Listening to the wind in the mountains, listening to the dulcimers play, the sound of the old days is still alive for her. She treasures a dulcimer her grandmother bought for her when she was little.

Dorothy’s family was involved in natural-history conservation in South Texas, and she worries about loss of culture in the Blue Ridge Mountains with the rapid influx of outsiders to the area.

“America is beginning to lose our identity,” she says. “A lot of these people don’t have a lot of material goods, but they are rich in tradition, rich in American culture, rich in faith…. It’s vitally important we keep these traditions alive, these American ways of life.… More than anything, what we gain from being there is the tradition of a part of America we need to hold on to.”

A

fter a busy week, the best way to spend a Friday night can be getting together with girlfriends.

What could be more fun than to drink wine while enjoying some delicious food?

Some might say that cooking is too stressful, or just too much work is involved, but with the proper planning and menu selection, having girlfriends over for a meal can be a perfect and simple evening.

I have enjoyed cooking for my friends for many years, but in the past few months since Hurricane Harvey, I have been without a kitchen. One of the things I miss most is creating a delicious meal and enjoying it with friends in my home.

Luckily for me, I have fabulous girlfriends who have invited me over to cook with them on Friday nights. They have even let me plan the meal on occasion.

In planning a fun dinner (for your guests and for you as the hostess), I think that it is best to serve only one heated item. This ensures that you are not stressing over timing all the items to be ready at the same time.

I have found that Chicken with Wild Rice from the Houston Junior League Cookbook is the perfect item to serve as a main course. I modify the recipe by substituting chicken breasts, sometimes boneless and skinless, and sometimes with bones and skin. Also, I use nonstick cooking spray on the casserole dish before I begin. The only advance preparation is the trip to the grocery store to buy ingredients, and the only dish used is the casserole dish – no mixing bowls or pots. Plus, you end up with both a hot main dish and a hot side that are ready at the same time.

With the main course chosen, next I select a salad. Houston Junior League Cookbook’s Endive and Spinach Salad is one of my favorites.

I will also select something to serve as my guests arrive: a cheese tray is perfect and can be made ahead of time. When creating a cheese board, Stop and Smell the Rosemary suggests offering guests at least three cheeses of contrasting color, taste and texture, serving around two ounces of cheese per BELLAIRE BUZZ MARCH 2018 26

person. Make sure to serve it unsliced and never cold; letting cheese come to room temperature releases its flavor.

Complement the cheese tray with the Classic Bruschetta al Pomodoro from Peace Meals. Both the toasted bread and al pomodoro can be made ahead of time, allowing more time with friends rather than being trapped in the kitchen.

And finally, Houston Junior League Cookbook’s Cut-out Sugar Cookies are one of my go-to desserts, as I love using cookie cutters to bring a theme to my dinner gatherings.

Are your friends coming over to watch the Oscars? Well, statue and movie-reel cookies would be ideal. Are you watching basketball games during March Madness? Why not make some basketball and jersey cookies? Celebrating making it through the week? Heart- and star-shaped cookies are great, as they are a blank canvas for decorating.

I find it is easiest to make the dough one day ahead and put in the refrigerator. While I am making the dough, I generally make the icing at the

same time – a simple combination of powdered sugar, butter, a splash of milk, and either vanilla or almond extract. The next day, I roll the dough and make the cookies using themed cookie cutters. I apply flour to my rolling pin and do not use waxed paper. If I will be icing the cookies, I do not sprinkle with sugar prior to baking. With the cookie cutters I use, I generally get two to three dozen cookies, and they take about nine minutes per batch in the oven.

It can be fun to have an activity after dinner, so I will often leave the cookie decorating for my guests. I put the icing in mugs and place the sprinkles on a Lazy Susan so that my friends can easily access all that they need to make the perfect cookies. Many a friend has found her inner-artist decorating cookies at my home.

I also have plates so that they can take home the masterpieces that are not consumed. Note: you may want to make an extra batch of cookies – it is very difficult to consume just a few of these, and your friends’ families will be very happy for the

cookies sent home to them.

Having girlfriends over for dinner does not have to be an ordeal or an overly complicated affair. You can even rely on the same standard recipes. I find that simple can be best; your girlfriends will enjoy the meal and the company, and by keeping it simple, you, too, can have a pleasant evening.

¾ teaspoon oregano 1 teaspoon salt ⅛ teaspoon pepper 1 Tablespoon wine vinegar 2 Tablespoons lemon juice 6 slices bacon 1 head Belgian endive ¼ lb. fresh spinach

Chicken with Wild Rice From Houston Junior League Cookbook 1 box (6 oz.) Uncle Ben’s Long Grain and Wild Rice 1 chicken (2½–3 lbs.)

Salt Pepper Garlic powder 1 can condensed onion soup 1 soup can water Pour packet of rice and packet of enclosed seasoning into baking pan. Cut chicken into pieces and season with salt, pepper and garlic powder.

Place chicken pieces, skin side up, on top of rice.

Combine soup and water and pour over chicken.

Bake, uncovered, in 375-degree oven for 1 hour.

Serves 4.

Endive and Spinach Salad From Houston Junior League Cookbook 1 small clove garlic, crushed ¼ cup olive oil 1 teaspoon sugar

Make a dressing of garlic, oil, sugar, oregano, salt, pepper, vinegar and lemon juice. Let stand for at least 30 minutes before using. Meanwhile, fry bacon crisp and crumble. Pour dressing over cold, crisp, torn endive and spinach; toss well. Sprinkle bacon over salad. (This dressing is quite tart.)

Serves 6.

Classic Bruschetta al Pomodoro From Peace Meals 1 loaf of rustic Italian bread such as ciabatta, cut into ½- to ¾-inch thick slices 2 to 3 cloves garlic, slightly crushed Extra virgin olive oil Al pomodoro: 2 medium tomatoes, chopped ¼ cup fresh basil chiffonade ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar Coarse salt Freshly ground pepper Preheat the oven to broil. Arrange the bread

slices in a single layer on a baking sheet. Toast under the broiler until golden brown and crisp.

Turn the slices over and toast until the second side is golden and crisp. Rub the toasted bread immediately with garlic and drizzle with olive oil.

Combine the tomatoes, basil, olive oil and vinegar into a bowl. Top the bruschetta with the mixture. Season with salt and pepper. Makes about 24 pieces.

Cut-Out Sugar Cookies From Houston Junior League Cookbook ½ cup butter ¾ cup sugar ¾ teaspoon vanilla 1 egg 2 cups sifted flour ½ teaspoon soda Pinch salt Cream butter and sugar. Add vanilla and egg.

Sift flour, soda and salt together; mix into butter mixture. (Dough will be stiff.) Working with a small amount of dough at a time, roll out very thin, between sheets of floured wax paper. Cut into desired shapes and place on greased cookie sheets. Sprinkle with sugar and bake in 375-degree oven for 10-12 minutes. Makes approximately 6 dozen cookies.

O

n a whim, I decided to drop into Coltivare Pizza & Garden (3320 White Oak Drive) in the Heights on a Saturday. I quickly realized my mistake of arriving at 9:48 p.m. instead of following my sister’s advice: “They don’t take reservations, so get there early, right before opening if you can, or plan on waiting for a long time.”

I thought otherwise. Houstonians are generally done eating by 9, and I should be able to get right in. Instead, the 20-something Coltivare hostess apologetically informed me that there would be a two-hour wait.

I chuckled at my foolishness and marveled at chef-owner Ryan Pera’s financial success. After nearly four years since it opened, diners continue to hanker for Pera’s parmesan-and-black pepper spaghetti and pizzas.

I recalled meeting Pera in 2004 at the Four Seasons Hotel, working alongside then-boss Tim Keating. Pera – with his even-keeled personality and thoughtful, technique-driven approach to food – attracted top-tier mentors, from Keating to California cuisine pioneer-chef Jonathan Waxman and Café Annie’s Robert Del Grande, who in 2007, put Pera at the helm of The Grove (1611 Lamar). Pera would take nearly a yearlong sabbatical from the kitchen in 2010 before opening local-sourced Revival Market (550 Heights Blvd.), followed by Coltivare and Eight Row Flint (1039 Yale), an upscale icehouse that serves made-from-scratch tacos.

Today, after opening Southeast Asia- and Caribbean-inspired gastropub Night Heron (1601 W. Main) in February, Pera and his Agricole Hospitality business partner/beverage director Morgan Weber, are finalizing their most ambitious project.

Here, Pera – 40 pounds thinner since I saw him last – discusses his new culinary ventures along with his favorite local spots for Japanese sushi, interior Mexican and Korean.

project in East Downtown.

EaDo is a pretty large project. We think it’s a growing part of Houston, and we feel it’s the right time. The neighborhoods have been growing for years now, and we feel there is going to be a good energy between the businesses that are popping up. Nancy’s Hustle (2704 Polk St.) just opened, and I had a great meal there. I’m excited to be their neighbor. The place across the street, Chapman & Kirby (2118 Lamar), also recently opened and they’re doing really well. Nearby, SeaSide Poke (2118 Lamar, No. 101) is fun and pretty busy.

Your newest venture is at 1201 St. Emanuel at Dallas, right? And it’s not just one restaurant, but three concepts?

Yes, it’s the Old Chinatown. From a kitchen standpoint, they’re going to lean on each other.

All the prep will be done in the same kitchen.

We’re doing demo as we speak, and that would put us opening in May. Talk about each of the concepts, starting with Vinny’s, named in honor of your culinary director, Vincent Huynh.

Vinny’s is our fast-casual pizzeria. We’re still developing the pizzas, and we finally found the dough we like. It’s a lot of fun. We’re making the pepperoni at Revival, which will be a little different than the way we make Coltivare’s pepperoni. We’re going to do more traditionalstyled Italian toppings than, say, those at Coltivare. It’s fun. It’s bright. It’s super easy and casual. You can walk in or have the pizzas and beer or wine delivered.

Then, there is our cocktail bar, Miss Carousel, which is going to be loungey, very comfortable.

It’ll have modular, living room-like spaces, and so, if you’re with friends, two might be on the couch and you’re in an armchair. There will be a cool lamp nearby, and you can create your own spot to chat. And next week when you come in with 12 people, you can create the same feel because we can mold the furniture in different ways.

At the center of this bustle is the restaurant, Indianola, which is an interesting name choice. What’s the story?

Indianola was the town in which immigrants came into Texas. The idea of being the port of entry resonated with us because Vincent’s family came in from San Francisco, my family came in from Ellis Island, and Morgan’s family came in from Indianola. The three of us talk about that a lot, about our families coming to America.

Indianola will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s modern American food, approachable, simple. We wanted it to be American comfort.

We’re not finished with the menu yet, but it could have a General Tso chicken next to a meatloaf. They can exist side by side because Houstonians are equally comfortable with both.

So, basically, Indianola would reflect the idea of America being a melting pot with meatloaf and General Tso chicken. Speaking of which, there are so many ethnic eateries to try these days. What are some favorites?

I love sushi, and so we go to Kata Robata (3600 Kirby) for sushi. That’s my most frequented restaurant in Houston. When I was growing

up my father went on this crazy meat-free diet, and the only restaurant he was able to eat at in Charlotte, N.C., in the mid-80s was a sushi restaurant. So, I ate a ton of sushi as youngster.

Hugo’s (1600 Westheimer) is our second most frequented restaurant. The first really great meal I had in Houston was at Hugo’s. Often, Lori and I will go there Sunday night for tres leches, leftover from brunch. Ruben Ortega makes the best in town. But we also get all the taco presentations, which Hugo changes up.

Right now, he has the potato taco. The chicken tacos are delicious, and we always get some kind of cevichesque dish.

My wife, Lori, is of Korean heritage, so we’ll go to Bon Ga Korean Restaurant (9861 Long Point Road), which brings her back to her family meals. That is our normal Korean stop. We also have some fun places, such as Republic Diner + Noodle Bar (1221 W. 11th Street), where we’ve had some really good meals. It’s bar-style Korean, but somebody there definitely knows what they’re doing. Yeah, we’ve been there a few times.

After you suggested Republic Diner, I went there and had one of the best bibimbap rice bowl and kimchi fries in town. Thanks for the great tip. But what about the new place, Nancy’s Hustle, which you recently tried?

At Nancy’s Hustle, we had all kinds of stuff.

We had their chicken liver toast on their snack menu. We had their Nancy’s cakes with roe and

butter. They made this butter plate, and they make their own sourdough bread, which was delicious. And we had the Gulf Coast snapper with beets, and we had sweet potatoes and yogurt.

I recalled that you and Lori are big fans of Vietnamese food. Can you steer us in the direction of good ones to try?

There is Huynh Restaurant (912 St. Emanuel). That’s one of our favorites close in town. Outside the Loop, we love Saigon Pagolac (9600 Bellaire). We usually order the banh xeo, the shrimp on sugar cane or the whole fish with rice paper. And we always get the betel beef.

They’re these little beef packages that you roll up in lettuce. My wife and I eat a lot of pho.

Lately, I’ve been making it myself in the pressure cooker, but when I don’t have the time, we go to Pho Saigon (2808 Milam, Suite D). They’re consistent and good. I also love a good banh mi, and the place next to Pho Saigon, La Baguette (2808 Milam, Suite C) makes a good one.

Closer to home, Les Ba’Get (1717 Montrose) makes a good banh mi. [The Montrose Vietnamese eatery closed in February for renovations but is slated to reopen as a noodle bar.

Meanwhile, owners Cat Huynh and wife Angie Dang are working on 3,000-square-foot Les Ba’get at 34th and Ella.]

ith eight wins and one tie in their first nine games, the Memorial Mustangs had a great start to the girls soccer season. The early-season victory total included wins over defending Class 6A state-finalist Katy Tompkins as well as a championship bracket victory in the prestigious I-10 Soccer Shootout. In addition, the Mustangs posted a big district-opening victory over perennial power Klein Oak. “Our girls are close friends and have a tremendous bond on and off the field,” said Mustangs head coach Lindley Amarantos. “They’re extremely committed to playing hard and putting their best foot out there come game time.”

Among those putting their best foot forward is senior forward Mary Grace Sullivan, who leads the team in goals scored. “She’s playing with a big passion and just finishing her plays,” said Amarantos. Plus, with 10 of 11 starters back from last year’s playoff teams, Amarantos says, there have been major contributions from a number of players, including senior midfielder Grace Yochum, senior goalkeeper Bella Killgore, junior forward Grace Collins and sophomore center midfielder Kelsey Hranicky.

“Grace is a really creative player who creates a lot of opportunities for her teammates,” said Amarantos. “Bella is a great leader who organizes our defense, while Grace Collins leads us in assists, and Kelsey is extremely consistent and dependable. Our goal is to win a district championship and even make it to state.”

With a senior-dominated lineup, the Bellaire Cardinals girls soccer team was the strong favorite to capture a fifth straight district championship.

In fact, Bellaire didn’t even give up a single goal en route to winning last year’s district title.

As for this year, Bellaire began the season with a breakthrough victory by beating peren-

Don’t let asthma control you Susana came to us as a new patient last year for another opinion on her asthma.

She was still experiencing asthma attacks in spite of using her maintenance inhalers daily. Overall, though, she thought her asthma was “pretty well controlled.”

Asthma is a chronic condition manifest by wheezing, shortness of breath, cough and/or chest tightness. Some patients have all these symptoms; some just have one or two. Asthma can be mild, moderate or severe. But mild, moderate and severe asthma can all be controlled.

Asthma control is defined by how often and how severe the symptoms are. To assess control, we ask five questions: 1) Have asthma symptoms kept you from getting as much done at home, school or work?

2) How often are you experiencing shortness of breath, wheeze, cough or chest tightness?

3) Are you waking up at night because of any asthma symptoms?

4) How often do you have to use your rescue inhaler (e.g., albuterol)?

5) How well do you think your asthma is controlled?

Each question can be answered from 1 to 5, with 1 indicating poor control and 5 indicating complete control. When we add up the five answers, we get a total score ranging from 5 to 25. A score between 20 and 25 indicates good control. If your score is below 20, your asthma could be better managed.

Many patients with asthma use Advair to prevent asthma symptoms. Advair was state of the art 15 years ago, but much better alternatives are now out. As Advair’s ingredients became generic, the name-brand drug’s price skyrocketed.

It now retails for over $400. But a therapeutic alternative, AirDuo, has the

exact same ingredients and can be purchased for $51 at Walgreens using GoodRx. Big difference. For those whose symptoms aren’t adequately controlled on Advair, we have about 8 to 10 newer inhalers that work better.

Sometimes, no combination of inhalers provides adequate relief. Fortunately, we also have four biologic injectables to help control asthma. These classes of medication neutralize either the allergic antibody or the allergic white blood cell, and have been shown to be very effective in patients with the most severe types of asthma. Although expensive, each company has very generous co-pay assistance to keep the out-of-pocket costs affordable.

Susana’s initial asthma control score was 14, but is now consistently between 19 and 25. She now takes the stairs instead of the elevator, and no longer dreads having to walk across a parking lot to her car. If you feel your asthma is not controlled, we can help.

elcome to SportzBuzz, Jr., a column spotlighting neighborhood athletes in elementary and middle school.

Exercise this, not that Happy March, Buzz fans! I hope your health and wellness goals are going as planned. To help improve your workouts and get you a strong core, I wanted to share a few great exercises that will help propel you into the spring. This article will hopefully give you a list of exercises to stop doing, and a list of exercises to start doing, with the intent to build a strong core, tone the muscles of the legs and arms, and provide you with a great warmup that you can do anywhere.

First thing to stop doing is the countless repetitions of sit-ups. Yeah, I said it: No more sit-ups! One big misconception about sit-ups is that many believe their abdominals are really working because there is burn.

Unfortunately this burn is the fatigue of a deep hip flexor muscle (called the psoas). Replace those dreaded sit-ups with something a little more beneficial, like a woodchop. To perform the woodchop, take your arms from over your head on one side of the body and rotate down towards the opposite hip (just like you were chopping wood!) This is a great addition to an exercise routine, as the rotational movement is great for mobility as well as helps develop strong abdominals and obliques.

Second exercise to get away from is a burpee. That should be music to your ears! This exercise is a little too impactful and hard on the joints; therefore, replace this movement with something like a squat to a chair or pushups. You get the same movement and the same muscles being worked, with a little less pain.

Third exercise you can stop doing in your workout is leg lifts. This, again, works that deep hip flexor complex, and while it may feel like an abdominal

exercise, it can really put a strain on your lower back. Instead, try hip bridges. While on your back with knees bent, drive through your heels, lifting your hips off the ground.

Squeeze your butt at the very top, and now we are on to building strong glutes!

Finally, wouldn’t it be great if we could replace long boring treadmill or elliptical workouts with something more invigorating or fun?

Instead of spending hours spinning your wheels going nowhere, try incorporating a variety of cardiovascular activities into your exercise routine. You can include the bike, machine rower, stair stepper, walking, or even doing a weighted circuit training routine or local free bootcamp as your form of “cardio.”

So, with your newly prescribed do’s and don’ts of exercise, try this circuit the next time you begin your workout. Complete 2 sets of 15 repetitions of the following exercises, using minimal rest to the best of your abilities. See how you feel afterwards. Hopefully, you enjoy! 1) Woodchop to the left. 2) Woodchop to the right. 3) Chair squats. 4) Pushups (whatever modification you may need). 5) Hip bridges.

O

n Dec. 24, 2017, there was a big brown box under our Christmas tree with a golden bow tied on top. It was almost as big as me, and the tag said “To Morgan.” It was from my Aunt Ruth and Uncle Tyler. I was begging my mom for clues, but she said she didn’t know what was inside. Waiting until Christmas to open it was so hard, and I kept trying to peek inside.

The next morning, my sister and I opened our presents, but I saved the big brown box for last.

I had a feeling it would be the best one. When I finally opened it, I saw a shiny red pogo stick!

As soon as I took it out, I ran to my back door porch to try it out.

At first, it was really hard, and I couldn’t balance on it even for a single jump. My older sister Natalia tried and could do it. My parents said it

was because I didn’t weigh enough to make the spring bounce. I tried and tried all day but could only get up to five jumps in a row before I fell off.

I was beginning to think my Christmas gift was going to become Natalia’s gift instead of mine.

All during Christmas break, I tried again and again to jump, and, one time, my dad held my body so I could feel what it felt like to keep both feet off the ground. Days before I had to go back to school, I had my best friend over for a sleepover. His name is Townes and has known me since kindergarten. He asked to see what I got for Christmas, so I showed him my pogo stick.

He wanted to try it out and was pretty good after several tries.

After a lot more practice, both of us learned how to jump on my pogo stick! I feel good that

I can do it now and will remember that I should never give up. I love my new pogo stick, and my best record for the number of jumps is 209.

Charitable bequests Everyone likes to end on a high note. For some, that means naming a charity in their estate plans, whether a specific bequest ($2,000 to the synagogue), a contingent remainder (all to family, then the Humane Society), an endowed gift (a perpetual scholarship), or a restricted gift (cancer research, pancreatic only).

Successful bequests take work. First, can you identify the charity? Can a stranger? Years from now, how will anyone know they’ve found the one you meant? Names and addresses change. An employer identification number is good, but a Secretary of State certificate of organization is better. For public entities, e.g., universities or medical schools, precise reference to the board of directors, school, or department may be necessary.

Second, did you identify the right entity? Many charities have separate operating and endowment organizations. Do you want to perpetuate a loved one’s memory with a named gift that will outlive us all? Or would you prefer to instead fund your alma mater’s toilet paper and floor wax needs for three days?

Third, will the charity accept the gift? Nobody wants your timeshares, flooded home or Section 8 rental property. Cash gifts may be rejected if they come with too many strings. Endowed or restricted gifts should be coordinated with a development office. A written agreement between you and the charity is sometimes required. If not, your Will typically must use approved language referencing an existing program. Major charities are happy to educate donors and feed their lawyers the right language.

Fourth, is a deduction available? IRS Publication 78 lists organizations eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions. Visit https://apps.irs.gov/app/eos/ to search. If your charity isn’t listed, it may be

registered under a different name. Group exemptions are another matter. Religious denominations often register the national office but not local churches. If Publication 78 doesn’t list the church you attend, ask for a copy of their group exemption letter.

Direct donations to foreign charities are not deductible, but there are alternatives. Deductible donations to U.S. “friends” organizations (American Friends of the Paris Opera) and U.S. registered international donor-advised funds (United Way International) may be forwarded to qualified foreign charities. However, if the foreign charity no longer meets the criteria at your death, the domestic charity will redirect, not refund, the gift.

The Clever Kitchen and UTHealth School of Public Health have partnered on the perfect course to start the new year with a heart-healthy lifestyle change. “Outsmarting Disease and the Mediterranean Diet” is a two-week, hands-on cooking course focused on the Mediterranean diet, which promotes fresh and seasonal plant-based foods – including fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, seeds, nuts, olive oil, herbs and spices – as well as fish and poultry, while limiting red meats and sugar.

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, primary prevention is the most effective and affordable method to prevent chronic disease, and dietary interventions positively impact health outcomes across the lifespan. The Mediterranean diet is not about recipes or diet plan, but quality food components. Research has shown that patients who follow the Mediterranean diet have a 30 percent reduction in death from all diseases.

Attendees will join registered dietitian nutritionist Pam Fullenweider at UTHealth School of Public Health’s state-of-the-art Nourish kitchen, using fresh herbs and vegetables from the campus’ holistic garden.

Many clients ask me, “What happens to Fido, the family dog, in a divorce?” Surprisingly, the law classifies pets as personal property. In a divorce, the family court’s duty is to divide personal property in a just and right manner.

Therefore, Fido must be awarded to one party. Soda pop habit

Pros of a caregiving service

Consumers drink 40 million gallons of soda in the U.S per year. Even though consumption is falling in the U.S., 50 percent of Americans drink soda every day, according to Gallup.

Some things to consider: Boston University researchers showed that participants who drank more than two sugary drinks a day showed signs of accelerated brain aging – a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. A University of Texas Health Science Center study found that the more diet sodas a person drank, the greater their risk of becoming overweight. An 11-year-long Harvard Medical School study showed a two-fold increased risk for kidney decline if drinking one soda per day.

Drinking one or two sugary drinks per day increases your risk for Type 2 diabetes by 25 percent and heart disease by 20 percent. Nearly all aluminum soda cans are lined with BPA (we all know this chemical). Drinking two or more soft drinks a week can nearly double your risk of developing pancreatic cancer, according to a study from the University of Minnesota. Physically active girls who consume carbonated cola drinks are five times more likely to have bone fractures than active girls who do not drink soda (Harvard School of Public Health).

What can you drink instead of sodas? Water or infused water: toss in some fresh fruits, add stevia or maple syrup for sweetening. Sparkling water: with a squeeze of lemon or a dash of herbs or infused with some fresh fruits. Chilled green tea with lemon and honey.

Don’t take another painful step

As everyone in the community is having to become remodeling experts, many of you are wondering about getting an inspection by the city inspector. This is something that many people get concerned and anxious about. I can assure you it’s not something to worry about, the reason being is that the city should be looked at as an ally, not a foe. For some reason, many people look at the city inspector as some type of person who is out to get you. The benefit to having an inspection is they can help your contractor ensure they keep up with the newest codes that are out. While many times the inspections go without any issues or events, there are times where the inspector may find that a correction is necessary. In the event this happens it doesn’t necessarily mean you have a bad contractor or that the inspector is being unreasonable. It’s just an extra set of eyes that can be a resource to you. Many times I have customers call me because their contractor got a “red tag,” and I tell them as long as he makes the necessary corrections and works cooperatively with the inspector there will be no issues. One great advantage about being in the City of Bellaire is that the codes in Bellaire are more particular, which make for better homes, and what’s even nicer is that they are far more willing to be helpful and not as bureaucratic.

A panel of judges – Kailee Wong, former Houston Texan linebacker and owner of The Athletic Room, Bellaire Councilman Gus Pappas and Bellaire Municipal Justice Jerel Twyman, crowned Mr. Bellaire, with Tom Koch of ABC Channel 13 presiding as master of ceremonies. At this annual event, hosted by the PTO, 17 senior boys – Chase Boddeker, Jordan Loev, Ben Riddle, Andrew Berger, Jake Buron, Alex Nguyent, Yang Ding, John Martins, Jakin Cordova, Tirtha Kharel, Andrew Rubio,

Over 100 fathers brought their daughters for a night of fun. This year’s theme was “Belle of the Ball” from the Disney movie Beauty and the Beast. Each girl left with a personalized mirror, chocolate rose and crown. Throughout the night, the girls had an opportunity to have their face painted by Honey Dew the Clown, take silly pictures with their dads in the photo booth, have professional pictures taken by Natural Expressions and enter in a free raffle for the life-size cutouts of the characters from Beauty and the Beast. Before meeting with a new financial advisor Getting a new financial advisor can feel risky and a little nerve wracking.

We know first meetings aren’t always easy. Here are some questions to consider so you can establish a sense of confidence and control.

1. Ask yourself, what are my objectives?

You should be sure to clarify your objectives before scheduling an appointment with an advisor. Ask yourself if the goals you want are short-term or long-term and what success would look like to you.

2. Make a list of qualities that you would hope to find in an advisor.

Do you want an advisor who is direct with you? Do you prefer someone who is more collaborative? How important is it to you to work with someone who explains everything step-by-step? Are they a fiduciary who will put your interests first?

3. Ask what information you will need to bring to the meeting.

Outline the reasons you are considering meeting with an advisor. Think about other big decisions in your future that may impact your finances. Our team makes it a point to send a questionnaire before the first meeting so that you know what topics may be discussed and can prepare answers in advance.

Ask the advisor to send their questions to help you prepare.

4. Determine your expectations and stay realistic.

The children hopped on magical “unicorns”– ponies that had been rescued by Peace, Love and Ponies. Guests were able to decorate the ponies with nontoxic, washable paint and ride them around the yard. Houston Christian High School student Sadie Rose du Vigneaud (pictured, with a piece of her art), along with six other art students, won awards in the Scholastic Art & Writing competition. The students earned a total of seven gold keys, four silver keys and five honorable mentions for their pieces. A gold key is the highest award a student can receive at the regional level.

Junior Destiny Duan received the one silver key and seven gold keys, which earned her a spot to compete in the national competition this spring.

The nonprofit Friends of Down Syndrome will host its fourth annual Cinderella Ball on March 24 at the Red Oak Ballroom at Houston CityCentre. J.J. Moore (pictured) attends the Down Syndrome Academy and is a candidate for Prince Charming (and a past winner). The ball is held annually to commemorate World Down Syndrome Day, which is observed, on March 21, to raise awareness of the congenital disorder caused by having an extra 21st chromosome. This year’s fundraising goal is $150,000, with all proceeds going toward Friends of Down Syndrome’s capital campaign to build a permanent home for the organization and its Down Syndrome Academy, a school for teens and adults with Down Syndrome. How smart are smart speakers?

e’ve got “smart” phones, “smart” TVs, even “smart” homes. But what in the heck are “smart” speakers, and why do we need them?

Smart speakers – a.k.a. digital assistants – are wireless, voice-controlled, and set to do a lot more than play music. Currently, the most popular versions – Amazon’s Echo and Google’s Google Home – respond to “Alexa,” or “Okay Google,” respectively, followed by a question or command.

By the time this story is printed, Apple should have introduced its HomePod version, powered by Siri.

With expected sales of 24 million this year and new versions being introduced all the time, it seems that smart speakers are the gadget of the moment (or the paranoia of the moment, if you’re freaked out about digital monitoring). What’s the big deal?

A West University mom whose eighth-grade daughter gave her Alexa for Hanukkah says, “Alexa sits on the kitchen counter, and I often just say, ‘Alexa, please play classical music,’ while I work or clean the kitchen. Along with lighting candles and having having fresh flowers in the house, she helps create a pleasing backdrop.”

Other uses: ordering pizza, calling an Uber, checking the status of Loop 610. Trivia’s turned less trivial in Stephanie Kim’s home, thanks to the MD Anderson Cancer Center director of community relations’ 8-year-old son Caden. “Caden was ‘bored’ while doing his math homework and just started reading the problems to Alexa, and she gave him the answers,” Stephanie says. Recently, Caden’s homework asked, Bobby told his teacher 12 – 6 = 5.

True or False. How do you know? Caden’s response: “False. Because 12 – 6 = 6. Alexa said so.” Followed by a drawing of the crying-laughing emoji.

“We tried telling him using Alexa [for homework] was cheating,” Stephanie says, “but his response was that he already knows his math. As long as he’s only using her for schoolwork that he already has a good grasp of, I’m fine with it.”

Caden also has been known to ask Alexa whether Santa Claus is real and, if so, how in the world he gets to so many houses in a single night.

“Alexa also reads him bedtime stories – it’s called Amazon Storytime – and she raps if you ask her.

always has a random fact for him. I think since he’s an only child, he treats her like a sibling!”

Laura McCullough, a mother of two, included Amazon Echo Dots, smaller versions of the Echo, in her teens’ Easter baskets last year. “[When I] learned they could be used as intercoms, that was a game-changer,” she says, “so I bought the larger one for the kitchen. I much prefer using Alexa over yelling up the stairs to get their attention at dinner time.” Laura also included Wemo plugs with the Echo Dots, so that the kids could connect their bedside lamps.

“They simply say, ‘Alexa, turn on-off the lamp,’ and the lamp works on command!”

Mother of three Peta Rubenstein likes Alexa because, “When you’re laying in bed and you have those inspirations, but you’re about to go to sleep, you can say, ‘Alexa, remind me at 7 a.m. to do whatever.’” She also uses Alexa as a surrogate smartphone minus the texting, FaceTiming and voice calling. “[Kids] can set alarms and listen to music and do all the ‘safe’ things without having to have their actual phones in their rooms,” she says.

Peta’s 15-year-old son Kai received an Echo as a gift from a friend. “I knew I’d like it,” Kai says, “but I use it every day. I connected Spotify and Amazon to it, so I can play my playlists. You can say, ‘Alexa, tell me a joke.’ They’re not that good, but she’ll do it. She’ll also play Simon Says and repeat what you say. If you ask her, ‘What’s up?’ she can tell you the weather forecast, but she’ll also give you everything that’s going on, like with the presidency, in 30 seconds.

“I turned it on from Evelyn’s Park [a couple of miles from home], just to freak people out and it worked,” Kai says.

“New ways to torment your sister,” Peta says.

“You can also order stuff from Amazon straight from it, like a 24-pack of Sprite, and it does it because it’s connected to my mom’s [Amazon] Prime.”

“Wait a minute, you go upstairs and charge whatever?”

“I can, but I won’t.”

When we asked if he minded having Alexa rather than a phone in his room at night, Kai diplomatically told us, “I don’t quite want to get into that with my mom around.”
