PUBLISHER’S NOTE This issue reveals the winners of our 12th annual Buzz Photo Contest. As The Buzz has grown over the past 12 years, so has our contest.

What began with residents dropping off a few hundred photos on CDs has evolved into a contest with nearly 2,000 online submissions, judged by a panel of professional photographers.

One of this year’s judges said the quality of entries in our amateur-photographer contest compares to that of many professional contests.

While I do not have a “vote,” I always enjoy sitting in on the judging.

It gives me a greater appreciation of everything that makes a memorable photo. This year, I was especially fascinated by the wide range of ages among our winners, from 9-year-old Joseph Johnson to 77-year-old Benard Nelkin. I also love to hear the stories behind the images, and the techniques photographers used to capture the photos. I hope you enjoy the winning images. Your letters, thoughts, opinions Turning back time I really enjoyed your article on Menu Memories by Russell Weil [Menu Memories: Favorite restaurant meals, May 2017]. As a native Houstonian I have been fortunate to dine at many great places that are not here anymore. It brought back a lot of great memories. Petty Steak House: One of the first steakhouses located on Post Oak. Used real charcoal for cooking. The Stables: Great steakhouse with all lady waiters. Black Angus Restaurant: Another great steakhouse using real charcoal for cooking. Sonny Look’s steakhouse: Located where the Palm is now. Sonny wore a different color coat each night. He also had a horse and rider dressed as a knight riding in the parking lot. The Carlyle: Owned by Harold Farb on Westheimer. He used to sing there also. Swiss Chalet: Great bar and food on S. Post Oak Lane. It was a hot spot for seniors who loved to dance all night. Red Lion on Main St.: The best prime rib in Houston at the time. Owned by George Crowder, and his Dalmatian dog would always be inside the place greeting the guests. Royal Coach Inn: Located on the Southwest Freeway. Had a great prime rib room and another place where you could eat and dance all night. Skippy’s: Located on Bissonnet and had some of the best food in Houston. Big portions and no menus. Little gambling going on in the back also. Ye Old College Inn: Located on Main Street across from Rice University. Great spot for dinner before or after a Rice football game. Ernie Coker was a great owner. Bill Williams Chicken Shack: Located on Main Street. A great family place for Sunday lunch. Best fried chicken. Bill Williams was a big supporter of the rodeo. Bought lot of champion steers.

Confederate House mystery The original Confederate House restaurant [Menu Memories, by Russell Weil, May 2017] was not on Westheimer. It was on San Felipe where Ouisie’s is now.

With respect to the original location, in my research, there were a few comments I found on a San Felipe location near Weslayan, but many were confused about if they were actually thinking about the Westheimer (Highland Village) location, so I appreciate you confirming that they did actually have their first location on San Felipe. While I was never there, I did enjoy the Highland Village location for years.

Grown-Up Galveston Our island’s not just for kids

G

alveston has always been a great family spot. But it’s also a grown-up escape, close enough to be easy, but surrounded by enough water to feel far away. And if you’re looking for a date night? There’s not much that can beat crossing the causeway.

“About four years ago, we started looking at property in the Hill Country,” says Buzz resident Sandy Sales. “The boys [husband Travis and son James] really wanted some hunting property. I’d go and see, and then I’d say, ‘Okay, how far is the grocery store?’ Eventually James said, ‘You clearly aren’t real gung-ho about this.’ What was there for me to do out there? Cook and clean?

“So James said, ‘What do you think about getting a bay house?’ And that was the beginning of a love affair with Galveston.” They bought a house on the bay.

“There’s just a casual state of mind. You feel like you’re a million miles away from a city. And there’s a lot to do, or nothing at all. You go over that causeway and your blood pressure goes down. There’s no mail, no bills. Instead of reading the paper, we work on puzzles.”

A couple of times a month, Sandy and Travis go alone. “Sometimes we tell the kids, ‘It’s date weekend, so don’t come.’ They’re like, ‘Really?’ and I’m like, ‘Yes!’” Sandy says she and Travis typically head to BLVD. Seafood for happy hour and dinner. After, they’ll sit on their dock with wine. “We sleep in Saturday morning and then usually head out to the beach with a Bloody Mary for a four- or fivemile walk. After, we hang out by the pool.”

If they pick up lunch, they’ll run by Café Michael Burger or the Shrimp ’N Stuff food truck at Jamaica Beach. Otherwise, Sandy makes appetizers and sangria.

For dinner, they are fans of local favorite Rudy & Paco. Other favorites: Saltwater Grill, Galveston Country Club or Nate’s West End. “If we’re in the mood to stay out, we’ll go to the San Luis bar for cocktails and live music – with a dance floor, of course. If we’re going to a show at the Grand [1894] Opera House, which, by the way, is a fantastic venue to see a concert or play, we’ll go to bars on the Strand – Stuttgarden Tavern, with indoor and outdoor seating, O’Malley’s [Stage Door Pub] or the BELLAIRE BUZZ JULY 2017 8

Relive the West: The Bryan Museum opened two summers ago in the carefully restored Galveston Orphans Home on 21st Street. It’s home to one of the world’s largest collections of Western art, artifacts and documents, displayed in chronological order, from Native American artifacts to antique firearms to modern ranching objects.

Take a walk: Take an early-morning walk along the Seawall and walk out onto one of the jetties to watch the sun rise over the Gulf of Mexico.

Roadside Pit Stops Favorite places to pull over

W

ith summer in full swing, many of us are taking road-trip vacations from Houston. Whether heading up north to Dallas or out west to San Antonio, or to another part of our vast state and beyond, there are some great pit stops along the way to break up the miles of driving for refueling and snacks.

While Stuckey’s Roadside Stores no longer flank the side of I-45 North to Dallas, one restaurant continues to attract travelers passing through Fairfield, 150 miles north of Houston.

Since 1966, early travelers can opt for the breakfast buffet at Sam’s Original Restaurant at 1015 W. Commerce Street. Beyond breakfast, manager Kathy G. Jones said, “passers-by and locals come to Sam’s for the barbecue and onion rings.” Sam’s is especially famous for homemade pies. Coconut cream pie is most popular, and cherry, pecan, and chocolate pecan pies are other favorites. The rotating pie case stands next to a gift shop full of souvenirs.

Making a stop in Columbus, after a 75-mile drive west down I-10 toward San Antonio, is a ritual for many travelers. Schobels’ Restaurant at 2020 Milam Street, established in 1979 by the Schobel family, offers a comfortable atmosphere and a menu or buffet of homemade offerings.

Fried Chicken & Waffles, a newer item on the breakfast menu, is topped with whipped butter and maple syrup. Service is friendly and efficient. Folks like to stop by the gourmet-foods area on the way out for sauces, jams, homemade pickles and pecans for treats or gifts.

Should your travels take you to the Hill Country, north on Texas Highway 71, make a stop at Hruska’s Kolache Shop in Ellinger for fresh kolaches. Founded in 1912, Hruska’s is a perfect halfway stop between Houston and Austin.

Kolaches, made from the same recipe since 1962, are the main attraction. Hruska’s offers 16 varieties of this Czech pastry. Ask for yours to be heated and enjoy with coffee. Or, there is a full breakfast menu and a grill, with burgers, sandwiches and wraps. A gift shop is stocked with souvenirs and novelties, while the convenience store offers rows of snacks and drinks.

Of course, there is more than one route to Austin, and my preference is Highway 290. As BELLAIRE BUZZ JULY 2017 12

FRUIT? SAUSAGE? CREAM CHEESE? Kolaches are made fresh throughout the day at Chappell Hill Bakery and Deli in Chappell Hill, Texas.

you approach Washington County, halfway between Hempstead and Brenham, the landscape evolves into rolling hills and bluebonnets (in April) at Chappell Hill. While the bluebonnets are gone by mid-summer, there is another reason to stop there – Chappell Hill Bakery and Deli at 8900 Hwy 290 East. Since 2011, the rustic exterior has welcomed visitors, who are greeted with an inviting aroma of smoked meats.

The south wall is lined with baked goods, including homemade kolaches filled with fruit or sausage, as well as pralines made with mounds of brown sugar and pecans. The other half of Chappell Hill Bakery and Deli is full of smoked meats and varieties of jerky. The east side is a full-service restaurant with a menu of barbecue and other comfort foods.

When writing about favorite pit stops, the many locations of Buc-ee’s – famous for their clean and private bathrooms – certainly should

be included. And if your travels take you down 59 South to Corpus Christi, you are in luck.

Take a break from driving at the Wharton location at the intersection of 59 and FM 102, just 52 miles south of Houston. The famous Buc-ee’s Beaver sign and plenty of gas pumps greet you.

Once you enter those sliding-glass doors, you run into the familiar. Among the offerings are a quirky gift shop and big jerky counter, with teriyaki-flavored jerky seeming particularly popular the last time I was there. Or opt for the fudge counter, or grab a bag of Beaver Nuggets to snack on. Grab your beverage to go in a “Big Red Beaver Cup” for $4.99, and bring it in for $1 refills on your next visit.

fter reviewing nearly 2,000 images, we are pleased to present the winners of The Buzz Magazines’ 12th annual photo contest. As we’ve come to expect, there were so many excellent entries again this year that we could have easily included many more winners in each category, so if your photo was not in the top four, realize it was a remarkably strong field.

With any contest like this, the process is inevitably subjective. However, there are basic principles of photography that must be met, such as lighting, focus, exposure and composition. And there are personal elements to consider: subject, emotion and storytelling. Judging is “blind,” as the judges do not see the names of the photographers.

Congratulations to each of this year’s winners, and to our Grand Prize winner, Carl Henry, who will receive an Olympus TG-Tracker Action Camera, compliments of our contest sponsor, Houston Camera Exchange. Carl is not new to our contest, as last year he had a photo place in the Sports and Action category, and, in 2009, one of Carl’s photos was selected as our Grand Prize winner.

Each year after publishing our winners, we inevitably get comments from our readers. Some agree with our judges, and others do not. So again this year we included a Readers’ Choice award and let the readers vote. We posted the 48 print finalists on our Facebook page, and the photos that received the most “Likes” became our Readers’ Choice winners. We received more than 1,700 reader “Likes” overall, and the winners are included here.

The Buzz Magazines’ annual photo contest is open to all amateur photographers, so keep that in mind as you are shooting pictures in the upcoming year. Watch for next year’s call for entries on our social media and in the March 2018 print issue.

Judges’ Bios

Michael Hart has been providing photographic images to leading corporations, design firms and advertising agencies for over 30 years. His assignments have taken him to 49 states and more than 30 countries. Michael’s work has been represented in several years of the international Black & White Spider Awards, and his work appears in its book, The World’s Greatest Black and White Photography.

Recent shows include APA-Los Angeles’ exhibit, “Off The Clock,” APA-San Francisco’s exhibit, “Something Personal,” and ASMP Houston’s FotoFest exhibit, where he received the Curator’s Choice award in 2014. His book, Biggio: The Final Game, is in the library of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Bob Gomel became a photographer with LIFE magazine in 1959.

During the ’60s, his subjects included such luminaries as President Kennedy, The Beatles, Muhammad Ali, President Nixon, General MacArthur, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Marilyn Monroe, Peggy Lee and Dustin Hoffman. In addition to his LIFE assignments, he shot covers for magazines that included, among others, Fortune, Sports Illustrated and Forbes. In the ’70s and ’80s, he shot notable ad campaigns such as Merrill Lynch’s “Bullish on America” series.

His work has been reproduced in over a dozen book collections. His awards include the prestigious Missouri School of Journalism’s Best Picture of the Year. Both the Library of Congress and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston have several of his works in their permanent collections.

Most recently, the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin has committed to cataloging and preserving his archives for future generations.

Butch Hall has been in the photography business for 52 years. In May of 1965, he bought an established studio in Fort Worth. The investment turned out to be the beginning of a 52year career. Butch has been exposed to virtually all aspects of the photo industry. With a background in both black and white and color processing and printing to cinematography, videography and digital imaging, he has seen the massive changes that have occurred in photography in the last half century. Road tripping to Florida

Buzz Baby is a column about life with little ones.

Writer Annie McQueen has three children under the age of 3.

O

n a July morning four years ago, around 4 a.m., the Boudreaux family backed out of their driveway in Houston. The car was packed at capacity, with dad Aaron, mom Lexie and daughters Annie, 5 weeks at the time, and Vivi, 19 months. They had tons of toddler snacks, videos, beach toys and a breastmilk pump.

They were embarking on an adventure, about to head east on Interstate 10. It’s one that many Houston families set out for every summer: a 629-mile road trip to the Florida panhandle.

Their final destination: Watercolor.

The stretch of Florida has sugary white sand beaches and calm blue water. The natural beauty draws Houston families to make the more-orless-10-hour drive, sometimes a challenge with small children. “It is totally worth it,” said Lexie.

This summer will mark their fourth year in a row to drive. They rent a house with several families.

When Annie was only 5 weeks old, Lexie said, “I had to buy the Medela pump adapter for the car and pumped while cruising, every three hours.” She alternated pumping breast milk for bottles and nursing Annie. “I do remember pulling off the side of the road to rinse bottles in a bathroom and another mom looking at me like I was a crazy person,” she said. “She must have thought I was homeless and needed a sink.”

On their trips, they like to hit the road before the sun rises. “The kids sleep until the sun comes up, or are at least quiet until then,” she said.

She has some tricks to keep the girls happy.

“We travel with bad snacks that we never allow at home, like Cheetos.” She said games also help, charged iPads with pre-loaded shows, or movies if you have a DVD player.

They make it all the way from Houston to Mobile, Ala., with very few stops, just in time for lunch at Mellow Mushroom, a popular pizza joint.

They’re checked into their rental home and the car is unloaded just in time for happy hour.

Close friends Anne Echols and Rose Ramsey, who both have toddler boys, decided to road trip it this May to Watercolor as well. Their other BELLAIRE BUZZ JULY 2017 24

friend, Caroline Hadlock, whose daughter Campbell is 8 months, opted in to the trip, but out of the driving part.

“I had wanted to drive” with them, said Caroline. “There was not enough room in the car for three car seats.” Caroline ultimately decided it was a good idea, mainly based on Campbell’s age, to fly: “Campbell gets bored easily, loves to be involved in her surroundings, and enjoys playing. She would not be able to do that in a car seat, and she hates the car seat.”

Anne’s son Behr, 2½, loves the song Take Me Out to the Ball Game, so Rose found Jimmy Buffet’s version, which the moms found more tolerable than the preschool version. “He just loves all things baseball, and Rose was kind enough to play it for him on repeat. We all sang along,” Anne said, laughing.

Rose’s son, 3-year-old Liam, is potty trained, but he’s still learning. “Liam doesn’t get the idea that he needs to give me a warning,” said Rose. “He peed a lot on the side of the road from [Houston] to Florida.

It did save us a lot of time on bathroom breaks.”

They chose to leave town at 3 p.m. “We didn’t let the boys nap before we left town, so both eventually took decent naps,” said Anne.

“We drove [almost six] hours before needing to stop. We had iPads, Apple Music with their favorite songs.”

The trip was a straight shot east on I-10, with a slight detour onto I-12 near New Orleans. “We did get on I-12 instead of dipping down to New Orleans,” said Rose. “I remember passing Slidell and regretting not stopping there because it looked like they had a good restaurant selection.

We ended up just stopping at some McDonald’s.”

The long road trip was Anne’s first but not for Rose. “Last summer, we drove to Marfa and Horseshoe Bay,” said Rose. “When [Liam] was a year old, we flew to Augusta but then drove to Hilton Head, which took nearly three hours, we also drove from Reno to Yosemite before he was 2 years old.”

The friends have plans next year to return to Florida. Same place, same time, same highway.

97 years of travel

uth Peters’ first mode of transport was in a horse-drawn wagon from her family farm in Central Kansas to the one-room schoolhouse she attended as a child. Little did she imagine, as she pulled the straw up over herself to ward off the cold, that she would one day fly first-class around the world and dine with a king.

Ruth, 97, has seen most of the world and quite a lot of changes in nearly a century of travel, and she shows no signs of slowing down.

Nowadays she is an inspiration to those who travel with her, says her daughter and favorite travel companion, Gayle Christie. To see her sprightly form striding over the deck of a cruise ship, most would never guess her age; indeed, says Gayle, many fellow travelers have chosen to accompany her on her appointed rounds as a way of staying fit during the cruise.

The Buzz caught up with the pair just as they were packing for a month in Europe.

“Whenever we go anywhere since Mother’s been 90, people always ask: What’s your secret?”

Gayle said. Her answer: tons of vitamins, a strong faith and a grateful attitude.

“That’s what we tell them. If they listen or not, we don’t know,” says Ruth with a chuckle.

Ruth’s father raised her and her three brothers after her mother died. She met her future husband while she was still in high school. Ken Peters was growing up five miles away on a family farm, homesteaded by his great-grandfather in 1882. Both families were very poor, but in the 1930s, the Peters family struck an oil deposit on their farm, and they kept working the farm but got into the oil business, as well.

In 1939, Ruth married her high-school sweetheart, and their travels together began with a road-trip honeymoon to Monterrey, Mexico.

“My husband took $300 dollars along,” she recalls with a laugh. “We ate all our meals out, paid for our hotel and paid for our gas – and we came back home with $150.

“A lot of times you could buy five hamburgers for a quarter back then,” she added. “These days, $150 couldn’t buy you the meal in some places!”

Ken took flying lessons and became a pilot.

In the fall of 1946 an airport opened in their tiny town of Ellinwood, and Ken opened the first flyBELLAIRE BUZZ JULY 2017 26

“So that’s how our flying began,” explained Ruth.

They became active in a group called the International Flying Farmers, which scheduled family-oriented events all around the country.

“It was wonderful for our children,” she said.

It’s amazing what God has allowed Man to do. Now we’re in the era of so much knowledge, and I’ve seen all that unfold.”

In 2009, Ken passed away, and a new chapter began. Ruth came and stayed with Gayle, and they began to take international mother-daughter journeys together.

They began with an autumn tour of Montreal and Quebec in the fall of 2012. In 2014, they went to Norway; in 2015, they toured Turkey, where they attended a special dinner in the ancient library at Ephesus, went up in a hot air balloon to see the Fairy Chimneys of Cappadocia, and took in the sights of Istanbul; then they went to Australia and New Zealand, where they saw the Blue Mountains and the Great Barrier Reef and visited with friends they had met on a cruise.

Last year they got to go to Romania where a friend who works as the royal family’s financial advisor invited them to the romantic Pele Castle in the Carpathian Mountains, for a gar-

den party hosted by King Michael of Romania.

This year the pair was preparing for an actionpacked Reformation Jubilee Tour of Germany, France and Switzerland to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation; then from there they planned to take a cable car to see the Eiger Mountain in the Swiss Alps. In November, they are planning a trip to Tasmania.

But despite her cosmopolitan lifestyle, the Kansas farm girl is still very much alive and well.

“When you have your feet on nothing but cement you lose your connection with God very quickly,” said Ruth. So everywhere they go, they take trips out of the city to see the countryside and meet the people.

They make friends everywhere, Gayle says.

“We’re very inclusive and outgoing. People open up to us, maybe because Mother is 97 and looks so harmless.”

They remember with particular fondness an 87-year-old Jewish gentleman they met on a cruise from Amsterdam to New Zealand.

“His story was just phenomenal,” said Gayle. “He opened up to us and told us unbelievable things.”

As a 10-year-old boy he and his family was taken to Auschwitz. He was allowed to take only

a deck of cards, and every day he would play this game for two years. One year he won the game and made a wish that he and his family would get out of the concentration camp. Right afterwards the guard came and said he and his family were free to go. They put them on train that took them through Bulgaria, Turkey and Syria all the way to Jerusalem. The allies were bombing all around the train, but it was never hit.

On that cruise, as on others, Ruth was known by all on board. One 20-year-old crew member began joining Ruth on her daily walks around the ship.

Ruth is unfazed by the constant movement – in fact, it seems to be just her pace.

“That’s what’s so unusual,” said Gayle.

“Everywhere we go, they cannot believe mother is traveling internationally. She’s very active; she’s like the hero on the trip.”

Ruth is grateful to have a daughter who enjoys being with her, and Gayle feels the same.

“It’s very rich, because she’s very, very wise,” said Gayle. “So God’s just richly blessed me with this relationship. It would be nice to be married again, but right now God hasn’t revealed him, so it’s just been me and my mother traveling the world.”

Cooking Buzz Celebrating the Fourth Cooking Buzz is produced in partnership with the Junior League of Houston, a women’s charitable and education organization founded in 1925.

T

he Fourth of July always makes me proud. I love our nation’s holiday.

As a girl, I remember spending the entire day in the water. My family went to the lake, or we spent the day at the pool.

As a young professional, I spent more than a decade in Washington, D.C. July Fourth is the big holiday there. I spent the day eating delicious food before we headed to the National Mall to watch fireworks shoot over the Potomac River.

These days, I want to spend precious time with my friends and not in the kitchen, so everything for my celebration is made ahead.

Everyone loves festive, flavorful ice cubes in their water, so I’ll fill the ice bucket with Watermelon Ice from the Houston Junior League Cookbook.

Every party has to have a signature drink, and this holiday calls for the Cherry Mint Limeade from Star of Texas. You can even make the limeade base and allow your friends to create their own limeade flavor by having other fruit for mixing, such as strawberries or blueberries.

The Potomac Pasta Salad from the Junior League of Washington’s Capital Celebrations cookbook reminds me of a fresh Caprese salad.

While the recipe calls for bowtie pasta, I like to use Texas-shaped pasta, subtly reminding friends of my home state. (As an aside, Texas-shaped pasta also makes a unique hostess gift, and I usually bring a bag or two when I’m visiting friends.)

Tallahassee Chicken Salad from Houston Junior League Cookbook is an easy make-theday-ahead dish, going directly into the refrigerator and then out onto the table. I usually swap half the mayonnaise with Greek yogurt.

Sometimes, I pick up ready-made chicken salad from The Pantry at the League building, 1811 Briar Oaks Lane. Plate it by lining a platter with greens and spooning the salad on top, no one will know that the chicken salad didn’t come from your kitchen.

Find out about your favorite chefs in our Chef’s Corner column. This month, restaurant writer Dai Huynh interviews chef Jim Mills.

I

n the world of salads, Jim Mills’ signature Southwest Caesar is star.

Bejeweled with roasted corn, black beans and pumpkin seeds, the zippy Caesar – splashed with a spunky dressing fueled with Thai chilies, coriander and cumin – has made countless appearances on Houston menus. It doesn’t matter whether Mills is in the kitchen or even officially associated with that restaurant – his award-winning creation has garnered countless fans, and his protégés, now with restaurants of their own, have chosen to pay their mentor a compliment. As Oscar Wilde once said, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”

Mills came up with his salad creation while working as executive chef at The Houstonian Hotel, Club and Spa (111 N. Post Oak Lane).

Eventually, he was made general manager of the hotel, a position he held for nine years until he partnered with dynamic restaurateur Lee Ellis.

The Cherry Pie Hospitality duo operate and manage State Fare Kitchen & Bar (947 Gessner), Lee’s Fried Chicken & Donuts (601 Heights Blvd.), Lee’s Creamery (601 Heights Blvd.), Pi Pizza (181 Heights Blvd.) and Petite Sweets (2700 W. Alabama). They recently launched Star Fish (191 Heights Blvd.).

Later this year, Cherry Pie will open another Star Fish in Menlo Park in the San Francisco Bay area and a second State Fare in the Downtown Commons retail area in Sacramento.

Below, Mills reminiscences about how he dropped out of college and developed a passion for food, and he also recommends a few momand-pop restaurants that he and his wife like to frequent on rare nights off: What to order at Lee’s Fried Chicken & Donuts is a no-brainer. Summer travel tips for allergy sufferers The summer season can be a wonderful time for travel and outdoor fun in the sun. Summer also brings a season of high grass pollen counts and high mold counts. Plus, it’s a time of high humidity and heat. Here are some simple tips to control your summer allergy symptoms: • Plan ahead. Check local allergy forecasts for your destination site. The allergens for your local area may be different than the allergens in your travel plans.

• If traveling to an area where there are high levels of the allergens that affect you most, get consistent with your allergy medications ahead of time.

Your best defense against allergy symptoms is a nasal steroid spray. Examples include Flonase, Nasonex and Nasacort. These medications are great at preventing allergy symptoms, but they don’t work fast. It may take up to two weeks and in some cases even longer to receive maximum benefit. If you wait until symptoms develop, you are not likely to experience much relief.

Check with your provider to make sure these medications are right for you.

• Visit your provider prior to travel. This will ensure you have adequate amounts of your medications.

• Pack your medications in your carry-on bag. Bring the phone number of your provider and pharmacy in case a need arises.

• Prior to traveling by car, cool down the vehicle by running the AC for five minutes. This can decrease mold spores that may build up in the ventilation system.

• While traveling by car, keep the car windows closed, and the AC on recirculation. This will decrease outdoor pollen and mold exposure.

• Outdoor pollen counts peak between the hours of 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. Try to plan activities later in the day to decrease your allergen exposure.

• After outdoor activities, take a shower and wash your hair to remove any pollen you may have on you. Put on a fresh outfit after your shower. Don’t dry clothing outdoors; it may collect pollen.

• Minimize temperature extremes. Asthma flares can be triggered by going from high outdoor temperatures to cold AC environments.

• Bring your own dust mite-proof pillow covers and put them on the hotel’s pillow. Then put their pillowcase on. Don’t forget to take your pillowcase home with you though!

ith their dramatic come-frombehind victory in the state final, the Emery/Weiner Jaguars capped off a historic season by winning the TAPPS Division II state baseball championship.

“I’ve never been a part of a more clutch, electric and exciting team in my entire life,” said Jaguars star senior Evan Sack. “We’ve had a core group working together for four years, and we finally did it – we’re state champions.”

The Jaguars earned their first-ever state title with a pair of remarkable victories at the state tournament, beginning with a 3-1 victory over defending state champion Second Baptist.

Senior Michael Ran knocked in the eventual winning run with a two-run triple in the eighth inning. Jacob Grzebenski allowed only one run in seven outstanding innings on the mound, while Joe Sondock closed out the victory with a pair of strikeouts to end the game.

“It means the world to win this title,” said Grzebenski. “I’m so happy I was along this journey with my brothers. I’ve never been happier.”

Grzebenski, who will play college baseball at Georgetown, was one of the heroes in the ultimate 6-4 state-championship victory against a Fort Worth Christian team that boasted a 37-5 record. The senior’s two-run single in the Jaguars’ final at bat gave Emery its first lead of the game. Junior Ryan Tiras added three hits and three RBIs in the victory.

“Emery prides itself on community,” said senior Jordan Hudson. “We had over 200 fans that made the trip to Austin for the state final. It really shows how close all of us are both on and off campus.”

For the Emery seniors, the state championship meant postponing their annual senior trip to Israel with the rest of the senior class by about 10 days. They flew out to Israel within 24

hours of winning state to meet up with their classmates. “It was totally worth it. I wouldn’t trade this feeling for the world,” said Sack.

For the St. Thomas Eagles baseball team, the tradition continues in the wake of the school’s 24th state baseball championship. The Eagles capped off a magnificent season by routing Beaumont Kelly 15-1 to secure the TAPPS Division 1 state title. “I don’t think there are too many high schools in the country that could say they have 24 state championships, much less four in the last eight years,” said Eagles baseball coach Ryan Lousteau.

In the state semifinals, Eagles pitcher Owen Meaney was sensational with a dozen strikeouts in a one-hit shutout while also driving in the only run of the game in a 1-0 victory over Dallas Parish Episcopal. “It was a really special game for me,” said Meaney. “It means so much to have that accomplishment and help put my team in the state-championship game.”

Then, in the state-title game, senior Logan Bear drove in six runs, with Brandon Campos, Nick Rodriguez, Daniel Perkins, Ross Brock, Nick Phan and Max Winter among those adding to the scoring onslaught. Simen Borland threw a strong five innings for the victory on the mound. “We all played together as a team all season,” said Borland.

“The guys really took this season as a challenge. We won 30 games last year, but we wanted to top that by not only winning more games,

but also going a step further in the playoffs and winning a state championship,” said Lousteau.

“This class has truly carried on the tradition of St. Thomas baseball.”

In tennis, the Memorial Mustangs duo of Andrew Esses and Artur Zigman closed out the season in grand fashion by winning the UIL 6A state doubles championship. It was an allMemorial doubles final, with Esses and Zigman defeating teammates Ben Westwick and Anthony Huynh for the state championship.

“It’s truly very rare to have just one school represented in a state-finals match,” said Mustangs tennis coach Budd Booth. “It was an amazing victory for Andrew and Artur and a great showcase for our program.”

“It means so much especially to win it for our school,” said Esses. “We came up just short last semester in Team Tennis, and to win it all with so many people from our school coming out to the match just really meant a lot.” Even after the victory, Zigman said he was still somewhat in shock. “It’s kind of surreal. It feels amazing because we’re going to be in the UIL Texas history books forever.”

Reese’s and fitness?

There’s no wrong way to eat a Reese’s. You can bite into it like a cookie and totally wolf it down, or nibble around the chocolate outside before enjoying the peanut-buttery goodness in the middle, or, my personal recommendation, poke a hole and eat the center first. Your desired method makes no difference when it comes to enjoying this amazing treat. Your taste in fitness should be no different. We have people who jump right in, totally submerging themselves in their fitness journey like someone devouring that poor peanut butter cup, while others frequent the gym a lot less, taking small nibbles out of their fitness goals, like chipping away at the chocolate outer edge. Then there are the ones who want to tackle the middle ground, those individuals who fall somewhere in between “exercise-aholics” and infrequent gym goers. Well, whatever your style, there is certainly no wrong way. Fitness, just like that Reese’s, should be enjoyed, and whatever method of exercise gives you the most enjoyment is the right way for you.

For example, I hate running, almost as much as I dislike nibbling the outside of the Reece’s first (everyone knows you have to eat the center first), but, regardless, running is not my idea of fun. Give me a good high-intensity weight-training session, however, and I’m all in! I am more likely to enjoy that style of training, more likely to do it again, and more likely to be satisfied, which is the main idea of exercising in the first place, while others love running, they get enjoyment out of it, and it is their escape from the daily grind.

At the end of the day, we are all achieving the same goal: We are all eating that Reese’s – I mean, improving our life through the enjoyment of fitness!

So whether you like the training sessions to be more like a torturous sweat sessions, or have a trainer guide you and motivate you through your workout experience, or simply just want to take a slow run around the 3-mile loop of Memorial Park, there is no wrong way to enjoy fitness. Achieve your fitness goals however you want, while remembering not to think too hard about the right and wrong way. Estate planning rules of thumb The phone rang, I answered, and the voice on the other end said, “Do I need a family limited partnership and a limited liability company? The other tax attorney said I did. What do you think?” I looked at the area code and answered, “Probably not.” “Okay, thanks,” replied my new friend, and hung up.

To save you a phone call, I’m going to share my rules of thumb.

College students don’t need wills; they just need to give their parents a medical power of attorney. Free ones are available at texasprobate.com/consumer-forms/disability-planning-forms/.

College grads need a will and business and medical powers of attorney. Use a real lawyer, one that explains beneficiary designations. The first day on the job, HR is going to have the new hire designate beneficiaries that may control life insurance and retirement benefits for the rest of the employee’s life. Get it right.

Newlyweds need new wills and powers of attorney. If children are even remotely possible, include contingent trusts. Update all beneficiaries according to the attorney’s instructions. Never designate minor children as contingent beneficiaries.

How much are you worth dead? If as much as $1 million per child, it’s time for new wills, with lifetime generation-skipping transfer tax planned trusts for descendants.

Are you married and worth $5 million? Add tax-planned trusts for the surviving spouse. If not, and one spouse is not a U.S. citizen, do it anyway.

Are you asset rich, but cash poor? This happens to entrepreneurs and real estate investors. Children cannot eat real estate. An irrevocable life insurance trust might be the ticket to add liquidity. For normal people, it’s overkill.

Do you have more money than you need?

Give it away. This is where the family limited partnership comes in. If you own the general partner, typically a limited liability company, you can maintain control even while you give the kids the other 99 percent.

Five million dollars in assets is a reasonable minimum to form a family limited partnership. My new friend called from a neighborhood where no one has $5 million to spare.

Finally, when disability is imminent, or at least feared, consider a revocable inter vivos trust, a so-called living trust. Asset management is easier than with powers of attorney.

Learning at home

I

have never been to school. That doesn’t mean I don’t do schoolwork – I do a lot of it.

I just don’t go to a building specifically designed for educational purposes. One of the unique things about me is that I am homeschooled. I have been ever since I could walk, but next year things are going to change.

When I was young, I enjoyed homeschooling because it was easy and fun. I had a lot of free time in which I could play outside and with my siblings. As I got older, school became harder, but my mom was always there to help me.

Most days, I enjoy a hot lunch that I can eat whenever I want. I also have a lot of free time in which I can do extracurricular activities such as swimming, basketball, violin, flute and writing.

We applied for school two years ago, but I

wasn’t ready then to stop homeschooling. I wanted to stay at home. Things have changed, though. One of the main reasons I am ready to go to school now is that as I grew older, my siblings got on my nerves. Being with them 24/7 didn’t exactly help. I love my brothers and sister, but I think school would be a good time to get away from home and to experience a new environment.

One of the reasons I am glad I get to go to school is that I will see friends on a regular basis.

Last year, one of my close friends moved away and another joined a different church, so I didn’t get to see them often.

Another big influence was my friend Mary Sophia Dewhurst. She homeschooled with me last year but went on to sixth grade while I was

held back because of a September birthday. I think I am well prepared for what school will be like because of all the things Mary Sophia has told me.

All in all I think school will be a wonderful way to get outside the home, make new friends and acquire new knowledge.

Avoiding stress fractures

A minute with Maisie

Stress fractures are hairline cracks in a bone.

In young people, these can develop as a result of overexertion or prolonged high-impact exercise, such as running or tennis. But they may also occur in middle-aged or elderly people, especially women, who experience a reduction in bone density or the more severe condition known as osteoporosis. People with such conditions may develop stress fractures even as a result of normal daily activities, such as walking.

In the feet, stress fractures most often occur in the metatarsal bones, the long bones leading to the toes, but they can also occur in the heel.

The best way to prevent a stress fracture is to avoid sudden increases in activity or exercise by gradually building up your exercise regimen. Wear well-cushioned shoes to reduce impact on your feet. Warm up before you exercise, because limber muscles allow better joint flexibility, which in turn helps cushion the impact on your bones.

Symptoms of a stress fracture include: 1. Pain when you press on a bone. 2.

Possible redness and swelling. 3. Pain that develops after you increase your activity level or, if you are middle-aged or older, with your normal activity level.

Many clients ask me, “At what age can a child decide with which parent he or she primarily wants to live?” The Texas Family Code provides that the best interest of the child is the paramount consideration, so while the child may express his or her desires with the judge in chambers, the child’s desires are not binding on the court. Obviously, the older and more mature the child, the more weight a court may give the child’s desires.

Parents should always refrain from discussing this issue with their children, no matter their age, as it puts the children squarely in the middle of a custody battle and may emotionally damage the children. It is best to work with your attorney and therapist to discuss the best way to communicate with your children during this emotional and stressful time. Also, the court may appoint an amicus attorney to represent the best interest of the children. This advocate is a lawyer who will meet with the children, investigate the case and make recommendations to the parties about what he or she believes is in the best interest of the children.

Buzz About Town Bellaire volleyball coach Bellaire head volleyball coach and athletic director Ap Clarke was awarded the Houston Coaches Association Award. She has been named coach of the year at Bellaire High School for 15 of the 17 years that she has worked at BHS. Clarke also was named "Woman of the Year" in HISD athletics. Prior to teaching at Bellaire, she coached at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. HISD’s director of athletics, Marmion Dambrino, presented her with the award this spring.

Riesenfeld, it finally happened. It was chemistry. After over two years of dating, Andi and Brett married at the Omni Hotel over Memorial Day weekend. The band The Pictures from Austin kept the dance floor moving. Parents are Cheryl and Haran Levy and Arlene Lassin and Jeffrey Riesenfeld. Andi and Brett are both graduates of Emery Weiner Middle School and Bellaire High School, and they are both attorneys. Brett is a senior associate at Vinson & Elkins, and Andi is an associate at Crady, Jewett & McCulley.

The event was held at Hotel Sorella and was themed Ovar the Moon: License to Teal. Ovarcome was founded by Sen in 2012, in memory of her mother. Survivors, caregivers, physicians, patients, friends and champions came together for the event.

A group of friends celebrated turning 70 with high school buddies by their side. The Bellaire High School Class of 1965, including (pictured, from left) Nancy Jo Fluery Derby and Candy Hurd Trask, kept Cardinal pride alive with a birthday bash at the Cadillac Bar. They have stayed close throughout the years by getting together for lunch every May and November.

Classmates came in from Pennsylvania, Colorado, South Carolina, Louisiana and Illinois. The group is planning another celebration for their 55th reunion.

Years ago, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School started a campaign for a legacy wall to memorialize families of the school, parishioners of the church, loved ones and long-tenured staffers. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo awarded 424 Texas high school graduates a total of $8.4 million in scholarships for college. ust because it’s 104 outside doesn’t mean we don’t have to feed the people who live with us.

But with a little clever thinking, it might just mean we don’t have to actually turn the oven on.

Enter the summer salad. Crunchy, cold and, best of all, no cooking required. Just throw a few things together (we’re assembling, not cooking) and you’ve got the perfect lunch or dinner for days when you literally can fry an egg on the pavement.

Lauren Eagle, a mom of three who owns Lauren Eagle Photography and Alegria Jewelry, says, “I like to cook. But I just put things together, like what do I have here and what do I have there. For salads, I really do think it’s all the extras that make it better. Like when you eat out, they’re always good because they have so much stuff on them.

“I don’t take time to actually read a cookbook,” Lauren says. “I can’t tell you everything on any specific salad, because I’ve made so many different versions. Usually there’s a protein, like a marinated shrimp, with olive oil and lime or orange and seasoning. Lettuce, tomatoes and avocados are staples for me on salads.”

One of Lauren’s favorite ways to put a salad together is in a mason jar. “Start with dressing and anything wet on the bottom, then add protein, then avocado, maybe strawberries or olives, and do chopped up greens at the top,” she says.

Lauren likes mixing greens to make the salad more interesting. “Spinach and romaine are my favorite combo.

“Stuff the jar until there’s no air in it, so that some ingredients can’t make others soggy. Then you can dump it out on a plate so the lettuce is on bottom and dressing on top.” Lauren buys mason jars at the Container Store.

“There are times when I’m really organized and will make five or six salads and keep them in the fridge, so if I’m running around I can grab one.”

Lauren also has food allergies, so making her own salads makes life easier. “If we go somewhere, like to camp to pick up in the middle of the country, they won’t have food I can eat,” she says. “It’s hard when trying to eat healthy because it’s not always that quick and easy. But when you plan like this, it is. You can even get really easy and go to the store and buy cut-up watermelon, cherry

tomatoes and fresh mint. You can throw it together, and you don’t even have to chop.”

Lauren also suggests toasting lots of seeds or nuts at a time for sprinkling in salads. “Put them in a bag for later, so you don’t have to do it every time.” And for dressings, she likes to make her own, like her honey mustard with ginger and an apple cider vinaigrette (recipes online).

“I love to cook, and I love salads,” says Cathy Burch, a retired attorney, preschool teacher and part-time nonprofit assistant. “If you have leftover grilled chicken or even deli turkey, it’s so nice not to have to cook and just toss ingredients together or do it on the grill, so you’re not turning the oven on. I’ll even grill extra chicken and keep it in the freezer to throw on salads.”

Recently, Cathy attended one of Amy Anton’s local cooking classes, AA Cooks / Kitchen Underground. “It was on Greek cooking,” Cathy says, “but she did a salad that she also did in a summer salads class. It was a hit!”

online] does require a little time on the grill, but Cathy says it’s worth the heat. “She just did the lettuce on a grill pan, but if you were making grilled chicken or burgers outside, you could do that too. I was very glad to learn the technique.

[Grilling] just adds another dimension to the flavor of the salad, and it’s really not that much work. You just split the romaine longwise, char on both sides, and it takes just a few minutes.

And it has this dressing that [Amy] makes with Greek yogurt, and it is delicious.

“I have another salad that I got from my friend Barb Fowler at a Bible study years ago,” Cathy says. “It has grilled chicken and dried apricots and avocado, and it is so good. It has definitely made the rounds! People always ask for that recipe.”
