his month, Bicol University, the premiere university in the region, will once again submit six of its programs for accreditation as proof of our commitment to academic excellence. Our decision to embark on this online review process is a testament to our fervent desire to ensure quality assurance in all areas of our operations, cognizant that passing the standards, and being awarded the accreditation status by no less than the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities of the Philippines (AACCUP) Inc., a highly reputable accrediting agency in the country, is crucial in fulfilling our mission of providing quality education to our students. Through the years, our university has welcomed AACCUP with open arms. This has yielded positive results as BU’s various academic programs, which have undergone AACUP’s internal and external assessment, have shown further improvement, thereby ensuring that our curricular offerings are at par with the best universities in the Philippines and in the world. Consequently, this sustained partnership with AACCUP, has shaped the practice of the entire Bicol University family, with accreditation becoming a way of life for the BU personnel. 6 CENG alumni among top 10 on 2021 Chemical Technician Licensure Exams
S
ix alumni from the College of Engineering were among the top ten candidates on the October 2021 Chemical Technician Licensure Examinations. A total of 77 licensed Chemical Technicians were produced by the university from CENG, College of Science, and Polangui Campus achieving an 84.62% passing rate over an 81.42% national passing rate. The six alumni are Marina A. Loveranes (4th Placer), April Joy A. Zulieta (5th Placer), Anabelle O. Laynesa (6th Place), Kimberly Matedios (8th Place), Harold B. Bigay, and Lisette T. Catangui (9th Placers). CS produces 11 on Chemists Meanwhile, 11 licensed chemists from the College of
Science passed with a 32.35% passing rate over a 36.31% national passing rate. BU excels on Chemical Technician Exams for 3 years Last 2019, 109 Chemical Technicians achieving a 32.61% passing rate with three top placers and 16 Chemists achieving an 86.88% passing rate with one placer was recorded from Bicol University. But in 2018, BU earned the 4th Top Performing School on the Chemical Technician Licensure Examination achieving a 97.7% passing rate that produced 87 passers. On the other hand, seven alumni were among the top 10 of the examination.

o learn and produce a more engaging video presentation in its adaption to the new normal, the College of Business Economics and Management (CBEM) Entrepreneur Department, in partnership with the Centre for Gender and Development (CGAD), and the Extension Management Division (EMD) held the 1st phase of a threepart training of the Gender-Based Lecture-Training on Audio-Visual Production and Presentation at the BU Daraga Campus, Multi-Media Room on November 19, 2021. The event commenced with the acknowledgement delivered by the Activity-In-Charge and Chair of the Entrep. Dept., Prof.
Edgar S. Barrameda attended by representatives from various offices and colleges of the university. Some participants were from the College of Arts and Letters (CAL), EMD, National Service Training Program, CBEM, Communication and Public Relations Office, and others. The training proper began with the discussion of the Pre-Production presented by Prof. Anacito E. Dematera, Chair of the Print and Broadcast Media Dept. from CAL. His discussion includes the storyboard writing, camera shots and angles, brainstorming of possible topics and themes, and reviewing of the gathered materials. Afterwards, the discussion on
Production Proper was presented by Don Ellis Canela, former Digital News Gathering Specialists/Cameraman/ Editor of ABS-CBN Regional Network Group. The media veteran focused on the technicality of production in the process of actual shooting. The participants are expected to produce an audio-visual presentation relevant to Women’s Rights. The 2nd and final phase of the workshop is not yet finalized due to the busy schedule of the participants and organizers and the impending annual accreditation and ISO. Health and safety protocols were observed in the conduct of the activity.

BUCE prof wins ‘Best Paper Award’ on 1ST IMCETEMDS B
icol University College of Education’s faculty member, Julius R. Satparam won the Best Paper Award for his research entitled “A Systematic Review of the Flipped Classroom Research in K-12: Implementation, Challenges and Effectiveness,” during the 1st International Multidisciplinary Conference on Engineering and Technology, Education, Management and Development Studies (IMCETEMDS) on November 26 to 27, 2021 via video conferencing. The virtual event was organized by the Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges Center for Research and Development with the theme “Fostering Multidisciplinary Research and Innovation towards Sustainable Development in the New Normal,” which aimed to provide an academic platform for researchers, professionals, scholars, and academicians to present the latest research findings and describe
emerging technologies and directions in Engineering and Technology, Education, Management, and Development Studies. It was participated in by 150 researchers from various educational institutions in the Philippines and abroad with a total of 80 research papers presented in ten tracks. Prof. Satparam’s study was categorized under Track 8: Curricular Development and Instructional Innovation. According to Prof. Satparam, the study that he presented was driven by his interest in blended learning approaches and how they can potentially maximize the utilization of technologies in complementing online and face-to-face classes, which is a project he did with the University of Wollongong Australia (UOW) under the supervisory management of Dr. Tiffani Apps of the School of Education at UOW. “My overall goal in conducting the

study was to have an understanding of how I can implement flipped classroom in my own context of teaching mathematics by taking a look at how teachers from around the world have implemented the approach, particularly on the specific strategies, technologies, and resources utilized. It was also my goal to understand the challenges encountered by flipped classroom teachers to mitigate those challenges in my implementation,” he stated. “These goals now extend to helping other teachers interested in implementing the approach by providing a synthesis of insights drawn from currently available K-12 flipped classroom literature. ive accreditors from the Accredited Agency of Chartered Colleges and University of the Philippines (AACCUP) held an online accreditation program for six courses which started on November 29 to December 3, 2021. The BS Biology program from the College of Science underwent its 4th survey. The accreditors for the program were Dr. Aurea Marie M. Sandoval, from the Benguet State University (BSU), Dr. Elsa P. Manarpaac, from the Western Philippines University (WPU), and Dr. Betsie M. Dela Cruz, a Librarian from the Isabela State University (ISU). Meanwhile, four programs from the College of Engineering underwent their 3rd survey – a revisitation on area IX (Laboratory). There were BS Mechanical Engineering (BSME), BS Chemical Engineering (BSChemEng), BS Civil Engineering (BSCE), and BS Electrical Engineering (BSEE). The accreditor for the programs was Prof. Alberto C. Arellano from the University of Southern Mindanao (USM). BS Fisheries from the Tabaco Campus (TC) underwent the 4th survey – a revisitation on areas IV (Support to Students), VI (Extension), VII (Library), and IX (Laboratory).
The accreditors were Dr. Manarpaac and Dr. Dela Cruz. Dr. Manarpaac was also the coordinator of the AACCUP accreditors in TC. On the other hand, five AACCUP accreditors also held the 2nd survey list evaluation to three programs at the Daraga Campus from December 6 to 10, 2021. For the College of Business Economics and Management (CBEM), the BS Business Administration program 2nd survey accreditation was led by Prof. Heherson A. Alcaraz, from the Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU), as coordinator. Dr. Reynalda Vilma V. Manansala, from the Mindoro State University (MSU), was the Team Leader and Dr. Sandy M. Gonzales, from the Batangas State University (BatSU), was the Lead Accreditor. The Ph.D. in Peace Security Administration from the Graduate School (GS) underwent its 2nd survey accreditation with Lead Accreditor from the Kalinga State University (KSU), Dr. Mary Grace B. MalawisIgnacio while the MA in Peace and Security Studies was led by Prof. Alcaraz with Lead Accreditor Prof. Virginia B. Medrano from the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU). Both programs revisited the areas III,
V, VI, VII, and VII (Curriculum and Instruction, Research, Extension and Community Involvement, Library, and Physical Plant and Facilities). Prof. Alcaraz was also the Daraga Campus coordinator during the online accreditation. On the same date, six accreditors held the 2nd online survey accreditation for three programs at the Polangui Campus (PC) with PC Coordinator from the West Visayas State University (WVSU), Prof. Alma Jean D. Subong For the BS Information System, Dr. Mayleen Dorcas B. Castro, from the Bulacan State University (BuSU), lead the accreditation along with Dr. Eunice B. Custodio of BatSU and Prof. Roberto Rodel R. Gonzales from the Nueva Ejica University of Science and Technology (NEUST). While Engr. Hancy D. Campos of KSU, together with Prof. Subong and Prof. Gonzales led the accreditation for the BS Computer Engineering program. Meanwhile, Dr. Lory Liza D. BulayOg, from the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTSP), led the accreditation for the BS Electronics Engineering program with Dr. Jerry I. Teleron of Surigao State College of Technology (TSSCT), and Prof. Gonzales.

Enriched Training - Online training workshop dubbed “Training on Software-Assisted Statistical Analysis: Basic Statistical Methods Using R,” conducted by Bicol Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (BCAARRD), in partnership with Bicol University (BU) and Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) was held November 15 to 17, 2021.

T
he Bicol Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (BCAARRD), in partnership with Bicol University (BU) and Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD), conducted an online training workshop dubbed “Training on Software-Assisted Statistical Analysis: Basic Statistical Methods Using R,” from November 15 to 17, 2021. The Software-Assisted Statistics Workshop was designed to assist faculty and researchers of the Consortium Member Institutions (CMIs) from different fields of expertise in navigating through statistical tools especially the R software for data analysis. The three-day activity was attended by 48 registered participants and 9 non-registered participants from the CMIs of BCAARRD from the Ateneo De Naga University (ADNU), BU, Catanduanes State University (CatSU), Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA),
Camarines Norte State College (CNSC), Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa, Sr. Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology (DEBESMSCAT), Partido State University (ParSU), and Sorsogon State University (SSU). Professor Lysette C. Aguila and Professor Ramoncito G. Cambel from the University of the Philippines Los Baños were the invited resource speakers, with Dr. Lara Paul A. Ebal as the Training Coordinator. Dr. Marissa N. Estrella, Consortium Director of BCAARRD delivered the opening message followed by the introduction of the participants and resource persons by Professor Joseph Martin Paet, RD Cluster Representative of BU. The workshop training reviewed the Basic Statistical concepts, hypothesis testing framework and introduction to R software discussed by Professor Aguila. Sample test on population using R was also held, during the first day. More population testing was conducted the following days with active participation from the participants.
Discussion and workshop about Correlation and regression analysis was led by Professor Ramoncito G. Cambel on the last day of the training. “This training has been challenging but more importantly enriching. The skills we learned in this training can be taught to our students especially since R is free, robust and easily accessible. In the flexible modality of learning, more students can learn about statistics and practice skills,” Francis Xavier Verdadero, ADNU Department of Natural Sciences Chair, said when asked what was his takeaways during the training workshop. Moreover, BU President Arnulfo M. Mascariñas, mentioned in his closing message that after the workshop, we can now overcome the fear for statistics with the right digital or software tool. “The way we approach statistics in this digital communication and information age should also be the way we approach any and all forms of technology with an open mind and a willing heart,” he added. BU joins VAWC campaign

n observance of the 18-day campaign to end violence against women, Bicol University – Center for Gender and Development (BUCGAD) held a Regional Webinar on Magna Carta for Women on November 25, 2021. BUCGAD has invited the principal author and consultant of the Magna Carta of Women’s Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR), Atty Maria Cleofe Gettie C. Sandoval, an Ateneo de Manila University Law Professor, the SALIGAN President, and a Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) National Gender and Development Resource Program (NGRP) Pool. The webinar was attended by representatives from the university’s associate agencies and SUCs throughout the region, as well as faculty, staff, and students. It drew 269 people from all across the country and was simultaneously aired on the university’s Facebook page. The affiliated agencies and institutions were Partido State University, Camarines Norte State

The webinar formally commenced with BUCGAD Director Dr. Noel R. Rafer for the opening remarks. As its vision and mission to assist BU to be a genderresponsive and sensitive academic community, the CGAD Director said that the start of the 18-day campaign will highlight topics on women and children’s rights. “This will advance GAD’s perspective and the rights of women across colleges, units, as well as its external linkages in particular,” he said. Atty. Gettie highlighted her discussion on the drafting of the law, its background and importance. The webinar further discussed the Magna Carta of Women as a comprehensive women’s human rights law that aims to abolish discrimination by recognizing, protecting, fulfilling, and promoting the rights of Filipino women, particularly those from underrepresented groups. Present also in the virtual campaign were BU President Arnulfo M. Mascariñas and BU Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Amelia A. Dorosan. On the other hand, BUCGAD, in partnership with the College of Science, College of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Extension and Management Division held the ANTI-VAWC Webinar on November 26, 2021 broadcasted at the BUEMD Facebook page. This webinar provided information and education on RA 9262 or the Act Defining Violence against Women and their Children, as well as the Provincial Women and Children Protection Desk’s policies and activities to end VAWC. Invited guest speakers were Atty. Ledilla Lilibeth LLagas, Professor VI from BUCS who discussed VAWC and its related laws while PMaj. Genivieve Olivia-Oserin, Chief of the Provincial Women and Children Protection Desk presented the Updates on VAWC cases in Albay and the Anti-VAWC programs and initiatives.
