The PRESIDENT’S OUTBOX
– this is the original Latin term for Fwhichebruarius the month of February derived from februare means to purify and expiate or amend.
Historically speaking, Februarius was the “Month of Purification” in ancient Rome where great festivities were held to reestablish the empire’s focus on righteous living. Perhaps it is this association that February has evolved into the month of love. For what better way can there be to righteous living than the ways of Love? This is after all the month where we are unashamedly allowed to be mushy and sentimental in celebrating Love in all forms and seasons. So for once, in the spirit of Love, in this month of Feb-ibig (Feb-love), allow me to remind all of you, my dear Bicol University family, that as we show our love for our University through our heartfelt and dedicated service, let us not forget to be gentle with ourselves. As we care for one another and for our respective units and workplaces, let us remember that we, too, need to be cared for, and loved. The old adage, all work and no play makes a dull man and woman, is indeed, true. The world revolves by seasons and cycles; so should we. So friends, find time to recharge; and be renewed both in mind and spirit. Find time; for there is really a time for everything, if you do make time. You owe it to yourself and to Bicol University to love yourself so that you can serve better and go the many extra-miles needed for people like us who bear the brunt of great responsibilities. Remember that the road to our vision is long and grueling. Finally, let us work with Love. “And what is it to work with love? It is to weave the cloth with threads drawn from your heart, even as if your beloved were to wear that cloth. It is to build a house with affection, even as if your beloved were to dwell in that house. According to Center for Responsible Nanotechnology, nanotechnology refers to the engineering of functional systems at the molecular scale. Their work employment with DTPH will start on April 1, 2017. DTPH is a Philippine-based Software Engineering Company engaged in embedded systems for automotive electronic devices owned by Denso Techno Co. BU athletes shine in taekwando poomsae and athletics at National SCUAA 2017
uring the six-day PASUC National State Colleges and Universities Athletic D Association (SCUAA) 2017 held last February 19-24, in Batangas City, Bicol University student-athletes brought home silver and bronze medals. Jhoanne Portia Hernandez notched two medals in Taekwondo Poomsae finals; silver in the mixed-pair category and bronze in the women’s individual category. Nico Dioquino won a silver medal in the individual points ranking of the Chess Men’s Division. Kristina Paula Baltazar, Rochelle Anne Gonzales, and Lee Ann Orillosa, together with one other member from CBSUA won bronze in the team event for the Archery competition(women). The badminton team composed of Gabriel Angelo Brienes, Jobert Muni, Dandreb Rempis, Anthony Alex Serrano,
and Van Ymer Vargas took home the bronze medal, and John Arvin Borbe and June Francis Pertez of the athletics team won bronze in the 4x400 meter relay together with teammates from other SUCs. During the Mr. and Ms. SCUAA 2017 coronation night, Joescel Ivan Grageda and Joana Prianes were both crowned 2nd runner up. Bicol Region garnered a total of 42 medals; 1 gold, 9 silver, and 32 bronze. There were a total of 120 athletes from Bicol University who represented the Bicol region. political issues and concerns that affect regional development, the BU Sociology Department spearheaded the Regional Social Science Summit in partnership with the Philippines Social Science Council and Camarines Norte State College on February 10, 2017 at Arcilla Hall. The event which was part of the Sociology days, circled on the theme, “Situating the Millennials in the SocioCultural, Political and Economic Realities of Contemporary Time.” Dr. Mary Racelis, renowned Filipino Sociologist keynoted the conference. The summit charted the Social Science course offerings in the Bicol Region face to face with ASEAN integration and formally organized the Bicol Regional Social Science Council tasked to organize the 1st Social Science Congress comes February 2017.
Development and Promotion for the Conservation, Production and Commercialization of Indigenous Organic Upland Rice in Selected Areas in the Bicol Region” (Bicol Upland Rice Development Project) which is designed to showcase the conservation, production and commercialization of indigenous upland rice cultivars in Bicol. The component of the project is to commercialize upland rice in Bicol. The training was part of the said project and was designed to engage the upland rice farmers in the development process, including the commercialization of indigenous upland rice cultivars.

Weckert is a professor of Computer Ethics in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Professorial Fellow at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics, an Australian Research Council funded centre. He is also the founding editorin-chief of the Springer journal Nanoethics: Ethics for Technologies that Converge at the Nanoscale.

2 campus journalists of Bicol University (BU) bagged awards in the 16th Luzonwide Higher Education Press Conference (LHEPC) held last February 22-24, 2017 at Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. In the individual category, College of Arts Jesse James Pigon ranked 2nd in Opinion and Letters (CAL) students Ivy Cuebillas and Writing (Eng), Aaron Dela Torre grabbed the Romeo Belardo Jr. both notched the 1st place 3rd spot in Comic Strip Drawing (Fil) and Mary in Development Communication Writing (Fil) Ann Sedan got the 9th place in Feature Writing and Comics Strip Drawing (Fil) respectively. he Bicol University College of Education organized an orientation seminar on RA 10912 or Continuing Professional Development Act of 2016 on February 22, 2017 at the CE Training Hall. Dr. Elenita Tan, Regional Director of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) served as the resource speaker for the said event. Tan enlightened the participants on RA 10912’s implementing guidelines and procedures, ASEAN Qualifications Reference Framework, Philippine Qualifications Framework, and ASEAN Mutual Recognition Arrangement.

The Palarong Bicol was held on February 5-10, 2017 and was hosted by the Legazpi City Government and Department of Education – Legazpi City Division.

College of Science spearheaded the International Seminar on Accounting, Audit and Fraud Detection Seminar Series One on January 31 – February 2, 2017 at CS Building 1 Function Hall. The conference aimed to improve and update the knowledge in actual practice of responsible accounting and audit standards in the Philippines and Australia and its affiliate countries; teach basic techniques in international fraud detection; encourage senior students and professionals to elevate financial analytical skills preferably towards international licensure.
BUeños elect new student leaders Vista sits as USC chair and regent VINCENT VISTA was elected as Bicol E(USC)ARL University’s incoming University Student Council Chairperson and Student Regent last February 10, making him one of the Chairpersons coming from BU League of Democrats (BU Leaders) since Mark Harris Lim in 2014. Vista secured the top USC post with 4404 votes. The standard bearer of Buklod, Ven Vincent Velasco, earned 3844 votes and League of Liberal Reformists (LLR) - Reporma Coalition Ma. Jessa Lorica garnered 3748 votes. Ray Anthony Barredo from Buklod was elected as the Internal Vice Chairperson while LLR-Reporma’s Justine Angeli Robles secured the External Vice Chairperson post. Other elected officers from Buklod are Titus Cañete as Secretary General, Dave Acosta as Deputy Secretary General, and Timothy Cañete as Finance Officer. From LLR-Reporma, Jeizel Cone Asia was elected as Deputy Finance Officer, Ivan Ian Baria as Auditor, and Reyniel Belo as Public Information Officer. Sociology Department marks 45th founding anniversary
HE BICOL UNIVERSITY Tcelebrated Department of Sociology its 45th founding anniversary on February 8 – 11, 2017 at the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy. Anchored on the theme, “Atang Asin Pasasalamat: Celebrating 45 years of Social Responsiveness in Instruction, Research Community Extension and Advocacy,” the event aimed to express the participants’ gratitude and thanksgiving to the Sociology department for its continuous commitment to produce socially responsive sociologists in the community. The four-day activity started with an ancillary event dubbed “Pakisumaro 2017” which highlighted the On-theJob Trainings of the Sociology students and the Department’s activities with the partner agencies.
