T
oday, unlike the past years, our halls are silent. We are more subdued and restrained in our celebrations. Personally, I am missing so much the yearly Christmas gathering of my beloved Bicol University family. Still, here we are – together, healthy, and alive – which is worthy of a meaningful celebration. I guess, Christmas finally caught up with us; for in spite of the pandemic, even in the midst of a series of storms that left us literally in darkness, here we are, celebrating Christmas. The best gift in these pandemic times, would always be the gift of self – of one’s loving presence and generous heart. Thank you my Bicol University family for the gift of your presence and the beauty of your hearts expressed in prayers of joy and thanksgiving for the many wonderful blessings that we have received this year. But as we celebrate, as we enjoy each other’s company, in a more subdued and restrained manner, as we partake of the blessings of food and people, let us never forget our colleagues and those who are suffering and cannot fully feel the joy of the Christmas Season. Let us always include them in our thoughts and prayers that whatever they are doing at the moment, wherever they are, and whatever circumstance they may be facing, all will be well. As long as Christ is in our hearts, there will always be a reason to celebrate Christmas! As long as there is Christ, there will always be Christmas. May this Christmas Season bring us the spirit of joy and compassion as we look forward to a grace-filled and pandemic-free world! Merry Christmas!

BU inks agreement with JLU, India on international academic cooperation
M
aintaining strong international relations, Bicol University (BU) and Jagran Lakecity University in India signs the General Bilateral Agreement on International Cooperation virtually via Zoom last December 15, 2020. JLU is a government approved state private university in Mugaliyachap, Ratibad, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. JLU Bhopal is one of the fastest growing and one of the most awarded universities of Central India having practice-based pedagogy at its core. Currently, the university is offering 56 degree programs to more than 2500 students from 8 countries and 27 states of India. The university has 27 partnerships with top industries and international universities ensuring the students get great exposure both nationally and internationally. Meanwhile, the General Bilateral Agreement on International Cooperation proceeds from the common interest of promoting collaborative partnership in the development of education and research. The agreement intends to collaborate in varied fields of mutual interest utilizing available resources. This will offer exchange scholars for professors, researchers, administrative staff, and students; lead the development of dual or double degree

programs; joint research programs; organization of joint initiatives; and exchange of academic information, documentation, materials, researchers, and publications. The virtual signing commenced with the welcome remarks delivered by BU Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Amelia A. Dorosan and messages from BU President Arnulfo M. Mascariñas and JLU Pro-Chancellor Abhishek Mohan Gupta. Led by BU International Relations Office (IRO) Director Dr. Dimson M. Rivero, a brief profile of excellence was presented along with BU College of Arts and Letters (CAL) Dean Dr. Leticia M. Lopez. On the other hand, JLU Faculty of Journalism and Creative Studies (FJCS) Dean Prof. Diwakar Shukla presented the JLU profile of excellence and FJCS profile. The virtual signing was facilitated by Dr. Rivero and JLU Communication and International Office Manager Sundeep Sareen. The agreement signing was witnessed by BU Vice President for Administration and Finance (VPAF) Atty. Joseph L. Bartolata, BU Vice President for Research, Development, and Extension (VPRDE) Dr. Luis O. Amano, and BUCAL Associate Dean Prof. Liliosa C. Malasa.

icol University officials receive donations from the ‘BULIG Bicol Relief Operation’ of the Leyte Normal University with the delegation headed by Mr. Reynaldo Garnace last November 28, 2020, at the Bicol University main campus.
The relief goods consists of rice, canned goods, and used clothing with seventy thousand in cash donation intended for the BU Community. Six years ago, Operation Bicol University - Loving, Inspiring, and Giving (BULIG)
was the university’s response to the typhoon Yolanda victims in the Visayas region. Now, after Bicol region suffered from typhoons Quinta and Rolly, it’s the Visaya’s turn to ‘bulig’ Bicol. Bulig is a Bicol and Visayan word for ‘help’.

aintaining international ties, involvement, and perspective amid the pandemic, Bicol University College of Business Economics and Management (BUCBEM) held an international virtual conference dubbed Paradigm Shift in Business Perspective: Coping to Global Challenges with the theme, Sustainability Amidst Complexity and Uncertainty last December 10 to 12 2020. Organized by BUCBEM Research and Extension Coordinator Prof. Imelda A. Siapno, the conference called for entries of research papers on economic, business, and policy. The conference commenced with the opening remarks by BUCBEM
Dean Dr. Eddie S. See followed by a message from BU President Arnulfo M. MascariĂąas. After the plenary session, keynote speakers Richard Emerson D. Ballester, Tradde, Services, and Industry Staff Director III, discussed on The Philippine Economy: Performance, Outlook, and Prospects followed by Online Education Adventists Director of the University of Africa Dr. Safary Wa-mbaleka on the topic Demystifying Research Ethics. dozens of journal article. His discussion focused on the seven important pointers on research education and publication. A total of 37 research papers were presented, 19 of which were from BU according to Prof. Siapno. As an international conference, entries were from India, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Camarines Norte, and Albay as presented during the parallel session. Evaluators were Dr. Clea L. Bongat and Prof. Elmer M. Lorenzana. The virtual session was facilitated by Rey Joseph Redobaldo. Selected papers will have the chance to be published in the Journal articles of Business Economics and Management.

haring the true meaning of christmas, Job Order (JO) employees in Bicol Univeristy (BU) were given christmas packages from the initiatives of College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP) administration, BU Association of Non-Teaching Staff (ANTS), and BU President Arnulfo M. Mascariñas.

n continuation of the initiative project in helping JO employees in BU at least 120 received relief packages were distributed led by the BU ANTS officers and College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP) administration at the Jose M. Alberto Gabaldon Building last December 21, 2020. Previously, 185 selected
JOs benefited from the ‘Pulis-Kasurog Food Bank’ of the Philippine National Police (PNP) relief operations team in partnership with CSSP led by Atty, Alex Nepomuceno last November 18, 2020. Present in the distribution were BU President Arnulfo M. Mascariñas, BU ANTS President Mary Jane Vicuna, and CSSP Dean Atty. Alex Nepomuceno. The package consists of a two kilo rice, canned goods, clothes, and noodles.

U President Arnulfo M. Mascariñas initiated a separate drive for JO employees in the university as well. A total of 290 christmas package consists of
face masks, face shield, spaghetti ingredients, and powdered coffee were distributed to all offices, campuses, and colleges across the university last December 22 to 23, 2020.
