Senior Leadership Team A year in retrospect is a photograph of the school in one period of time, whereas a school is a living, changing, and developing entity best seen as video. 2015 was a year of consolidation, reinforcement and adaptation.

Consolidation for the Senior Leadership Team meant that, for the first time in many years, there were no further changes in the SLT. Stability of personnel, familiarity and trust, permitted the Leadership Team to advance on several significant projects in 2015 which will bear fruit in 2016.

Chief amongst these projects was the preparation for the authorisation of the IB Primary Years Programme in Junior, and the preparation for the CIS accreditation visit occurring in April 2016.

Reinforcement has been necessary as the “Double Generation” continued its stately journey through the Senior School. In 2015, for the first time, the generation faced the external international IGCSE examinations.

Adaptation has continued as the School seeks to retain a pattern of values, norms and behaviours steeped in tradition, in a world that bears little similarity to that of 2000 – that alone to the misty and distant foundation years of the School.

External examination results for 2015 were mixed – with 100% of Form 6 students passing the “Egreso” exams at the end of the year, whilst both IGCSE and IB results were disappointing when compared with the very high standards set in recent years. Particularly unsettling were the poor IGCSE results achieved by the “Double Generation”. A very thorough analysis of external examination results has culminated in important structural changes which should positively affect future examination results.

In Junior, both students and teachers continued with the considerable task of learning about, reflecting on, and generally “living” the PYP message. In April of 2016 the School will request the International Baccalureate permission to formally offer the entire PYP programme from the start of the 2017 academic year.

As an adjunct to academic learning, The St. Andrew´s of the River Plate Essay Competition yielded excellent results for the 68 participants from The British Schools: Chloé Romero in the Elementary Section, Chiara Tucci in the Junior Section, and Giorgina Sexton in the Senior Section were all awarded first prizes.

Also supporting classroom activity was the second annual THIMUN Latin America Conference – drawing students from South America and Europe to participate in a simulation of the United Nations. The Pastoral Team, as ever, organised many activities in 2015. The highlight perhaps being the “Anti-Bullying Week” that both raised consciousness, and brought students and staff together against this resident evil. The Leadership programme, the huge range of the CAS programme, and one off events such as the Senior Science Week also served to take learning outside of the classroom.

The British Schools has a long and proud tradition of sporting engagement and success. After school sports practices attract very large numbers of students each day of the week, and the School is very well represented in all sports in local leagues. Whilst apparently churlish, it is also very dangerous to acknowledge individual sporting excellence in sports activities outside of school; the danger being that of possible omission. Therefore, whilst acknowledging fantastic 2

individual achievements in these areas, this report will centre on the “traditional” British team sports. In Rugby no single team shone out, but there was considerable achievement across a large range of age categories. Both Form 6 and U-13 categories were crowned champions at the William Ogston Tournament. The U-17´s were champions of the Torneo de Apertura, and, later in the year, the U-16 category won the SUMMUM Cup. In Hockey the renaissance of recent years gathered pace in 2015: the U-13´s were runners up in the William Ogston tournament, and champions in the LID championship, similarly the U14´s won the LID championship, and the U16´s won both LID and the SUMMUM cup. Finally, the U18´s were crowned champions of the Valentín Martínez tournament.

2015 was also the year of the participation of the “Teros” in the Rugby World Cup in the United Kingdom. It was a privilege for the School to receive several former-student players prior to the trip to the UK – and to see the enthusiasm and pride present in very, very, many young faces.

Rugby with a new face was also on offer in the gymnasium on a Thursday night where the School hosted the training sessions of the Uruguayan Quad Rugby team. Adults and students alike marvelled at the skills of the players - and at their inability to emulate them.

The Little Mermaid was the enchanting Junior School production in June of 2015, whilst Elvis and “All Shook Up” took centre stage in Senior in August and September. Not to be outdone, there was the annual and invariably excellent IB Art Exhibition and the innovative Creative Arts Exhibition in Junior.

2015 was a busy, full, complicated, demanding and interesting year – as every school year should be.

Editors If 2015 now seems all but just distant memories, perhaps at least some of these memories have been successfully captured within the pages that follow.

The contents are the product of an enthusiastic team - of the time and dedication expended by the many parts who make up the whole, that is, The British School’s community. The aim of this student-centred publication is to impart a visual portrayal of some of the activities and events that took place during the academic year 2015. A survey to gather opinions on the Yearbook was administered to the student and parent community early in the year. The results were extremely positive and produced some very constructive comments. That leads us to say to everyone who participated in the survey, and to the many parts who make up the whole, a sincere and gigantic THANK YOU! We hope that this compendium will rekindle the School Spirit that so evidently permeated the distinct aspects of learning and life at The British Schools during 2015.

2015 Junior Prefects proved to be a very committed and creative group of leaders. They engaged in a project which researched how rubbish was managed in the School and came up with some very interesting suggestions on how to improve the way we deal with litter. Their contributions in different aspects of School life were invaluable, acting as excellent role models for their peers and being true to the School Motto “Perfice” - Be thorough. Well done!

Primary Years Programme (PYP) The British Schools completed the first year as Candidate School for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP).

During the year the School held a series of interactive workshops for students, parents, staff and School Authorities. Developing partnerships for learning between the School and its community of families is a key factor in the successful implementation of the PYP. Through the PYP, The British Schools promotes a pedagogical inquiry-based and constructivist approach to learning that allows each learner to come to enduring understandings in his or her own way. Teachers are facilitators who guide learners to arrive at their “true” questions—the things that really matter to them. When students pose genuine / significant / “real” questions, they are motivated to learn, and to develop a sense of ownership for that learning. The holistic development of students and the consideration of the multiple intelligences, enhance their talents and skills. Through collaborative work, learners are engaged in exploration, discussion and critical thinking.

The 10 attributes of the IB Learner Profile encourage us to become global citizens and life-long learners, challenging us all to be the best that we can be in the home, at school, in learning, and in life.

Yearboook Survey Early in 2015 the School administered a Yearbook opinion survey to its community of students and parents. The high number of responses produced an overall positive view of the contents and structure – as demonstrated by the graphic analysis below. The survey also produced some very constructive comments, many of which have been incorporated into the planning process for future publications.

Rugby World Cup This year England hosted the Rugby World Cup. To celebrate this international event, students from Kinder to Form 6 each adopted one of the 20 participating nations. The different year groups used their current Unit of Inquiry to plan, research, and celebrate customs and traditions. These inquires culminated in an international celebration where the students were invited to come to school dressed in the colour of their chosen nation’s rugby shirt. Each class then took turns in hosting different year groups, sharing fun traditions, knowledge and customs. Classes also had the opportunity to visit a different year group to learn about another country.

During this celebration the School was privileged to receive two brothers and alumni of The British Schools from the national rugby team the ‘Teros’ representing Uruguay at the Rugby World Cup; they visited classes and shared in the day. The morning ended with a wonderful parade in which students walked with pride in front of the School and parents, who came along to proffer their support.

Library 2015 was another busy year in the Junior Library!

There were stories told, games played, and new skills learnt.

New books are always being incorporated into an ever-growing collection, and this year students were able to “taste” them all in a pretend restaurant!

The Library also received the visitis of author Sebastián Pedrozo and a narrator María José Riffaud; played the traditional Mysterious Characters guessing game; and published two issues of Voices. At the end of the year, everyone participated in decorating the special Christmas tree.

Form 1 & Form 2 Play This year, and for the first time, students in Form 1 and Form 2 joined together to prepare the Infant Celebration. They worked collaboratively on the Unit of Inquiry “Sharing the Planet” and created a story called “Let’s share it!” The story dealt with conflict solving, sharing resources and respecting other human beings, animals and vegetation.

Form 1 & Form 2 Play The students were able to develop their self-confidence and character formation by working as a team, whilst also creating a strong sense of friendship, belonging, and School Spirit. The learning and production process was as enjoyable and enriching as the outcome itself.

The Little Mermaid Adapted from Disney’s Broadway production and the motion picture, with its enormously popular music, this musical is based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most celebrated tales. Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR. takes an enchanting look at the sacrifices we make for love and acceptance.

It was a pleasure to witness such a moving display of raw talent in this student spectacular. Whilst smiling throughout, it was difficult for the enraptured audience to remain in their seats as they found themselves tapping their toes and singing along to some of their favourite songs.

Pastoral Every year the Pastoral side of school life is alive and buzzing!

With a strong focus on ‘Values’, students engage in a wide range of activities that encourage a sense of Caring and Community Commitment. In addition to what takes place inside of the School, there are many opportunities for students, families, and staff to share interactions with the wider community.

CAIF “La Esperanza”, Fundación Pérez Scremini, Teletón, Food and Toy Campaigns, Remembrance Day, Help for the victims of the floods in Durazno, Christmas Hampers and “Navidad en Familia”, are just some examples of students, parents and alumni united as one big family to help others, fostering a sense of empathy whilst also creating some very special memories.

Junior Sports Day Held in spring every year, the Junior Sports Day is always a popular event in the academic calendar.

Whether in teams or individually, the students let their athletic prowess shine as they challenge themselves and each other in a variety of sports and disciplines.

Combine this mix of physical activity and healthy competition with heapfuls of fun, and you have the perfect recipe for an exciting day on the School fields enjoyed by students, parents and staff.

LOGO Project The Logo Project is an initiative developed by the ICT Department that aligns well with the PYP Units of Inquiry.

The Logo Project is an inquiry into coding and an understanding of how to use coding to give instructions to a computer in order to achieve a specific goal.

Computer programming skills facilitate thinking and an awareness of different communication techniques.

Students worked in pairs and chose a cartoon which they then had to reproduce using the appropriate Logo commands. Feedback to students took the form of a referendum where Junior staff and students each voted for their favourite project.

Form 6 Camp 2015 Form 6 Camp was a great success, as it almost always is. In 2015 the School decided to trial moving this activity to the beginning of the academic year.

Why change? To provide the bonding and cementing of relationships that takes place among the students themselves, and with their teachers, at the very beginning of this important year. Given the very positive results, the Form 6 Camp will now feature as one of the first activities to be enjoyed by the students as they commence their final year in Junior.

Pastoral PASO SEVERINO La salida a Paso Severino (Florida) se ofrece a los alumnos de primer año del Senior. El objetivo de la misma es favorecer la interacción, integración y buena convivencia entre los alumnos en un clima de compañerismo y alegría.

STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council team is composed of representatives from each generation. The council is a channel of communication with the School leadership, sharing ideas or raising concerns of their peers to improve various aspects of school life.

La actividad es organizada por el equipo de Pastoral y cuenta con la valiosa participación de los alumnos de Year 5 que conforman el grupo de líderes. Estos alumnos se preparan previamente para contar con herramientas de liderazgo que les permitan llevar adelante las actividades que se desarrollan durante ese día.

Students work together in promoting charitable campaigns, such as Teletón or Pérez Scremini, and help in the organisation of School events.

LIDERES El equipo de líderes está conformado por alumnos de quinto año de Senior y forma parte del Programa de Enriquecimiento Estudiantil que ofrece el Colegio.

Liderado por el equipo de Pastoral, sus integrantes comienzan a formarse para el desempeño de este nuevo rol. De este modo, luego podrán acompañar en varias actividades donde el equipo de líderes resulta fundamental.

La presencia del equipo de líderes enriquece mucho aquellas instancias en las que participan y la experiencia les permite descubrir y desarrollar algunas de sus capacidades.

CAMPAÑA ANTIBULLYING Este año se llevó a cabo la Campaña Antibullying en el colegio. Con el objetivo de desarrollar conciencia en los alumnos sobre esta temática, se diseñaron una serie de actividades que se fueron implementando a lo largo de varios días.

La campaña tuvo una duración de una semana y buscó ser una propuesta distinta, novedosa y atractiva para poner nuevamente el tema ante los ojos de los alumnos con la finalidad de construir un colegio libre de bullying.

El rojo fue el color elegido para identificar la campaña y fue utilizado en varios momentos de la misma.

THIMUN

The Hague International Model United Nations Latin America

2nd Annual Session

Delegates, student officers, School authorities, teachers, and distinguished guests gathered in the Auditorium for the Opening Ceremony of THIMUN LA 2015. Before the formal proceedings got under way, a one minute silence was held to honour those lost to war or to natural disasters.

The official flag bearers opened the ceremony with true pomp and circumstance, as they paraded onto the stage with the national flags of the participating countries, organising schools, and the THIMUN LA logo. The opening speeches were followed by entertainment from the Junior Choir who enchanted the audience with their beautiful rendition of “La Sencillita” a Uruguayan song by ‘el Sabalero’ and “Canta, Canta, Minha Gente” by famous the Brazilian singer Martinho da Vila. The Junior Choir were accompanied on instruments played by students and staff while a colourful PowerPoint presentation projected images of Latin America.

What is MUN? Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda. The participants play roles as diplomats representing a nation or NGO in a simulated session of a committee of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly. Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems. More recently, simulation of other deliberative bodies, such as the United Nations Security Council, has been included in Model United Nations.

During a conference, participants must employ a variety of communication and critical thinking skills in order to represent the policies of their country.

These skills include public speaking, group communication, research, policy analysis, active listening, negotiating, reaching consensus, conflict resolution, note taking, and technical writing. Model United Nations groups exist to develop these skills and are usually organised as either a club, conference, or class.

A conference is a school-wide, local, regional or international gathering of Model United Nations students who come together over a period between one and five days.

IB Andes A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reflect on yourself, and the most marvellous nature! The IB Andes Programme, which takes place in Lagunillas, Chile, is a week full of challenges.

It includes TOK and CAS activities as well as camping in the mountains, hiking and other outdoor activities with students from other South American countries. The British Schools is proud of its group of 14 students who were part of this year’s experience. ***** The IB Andes experience was a great opportunity

to

apply

the

theoretical

knowledge acquired during the courses of CAS and TOK. They presented us with extreme situations in which we had to develop our survival skills in order to endure the situation and to prosper. As the week progressed, we were able to have very enriching experience; meeting new people and allowing us to become acquainted with new aspects of our fellow students.

Magdalena Rojas IB Andes was an incredible and unique experience. It is amazing to be able to sleep in the middle of the Andes. You can see breathtaking views and have plenty of time to connect with yourself and with nature. It is an opportunity to get to know people from all around South America that are doing the same IB programme that you are, and are struggling with similar difficulties and tasks. I encourage everyone to go on this trip because it is an opportunity to get out of your “comfort zone” and experience new things.

Leaders Conference “The DGLA (Dwight Leadership Academy) programme was a life changing experience for me. Not only did I have the opportunity to visit a beautiful place, I also had the chance to meet incredible people and learn a lot from them. Working hard and having fun was our daily routine and the satisfaction one felt after doing each and every activity was very gratifying. Whether it was helping the community, challenging ourselves, or simply learning how to become effective leaders. Once we had finished our course we felt that we had learnt even more than that - we felt as if we helped a lot but that we needed to help even more and become even more effective with what we had learnt. We realised what we were there for, and what exactly we wanted to do in the future, not only for ourselves, but for others.

We learnt that with a purpose and passion we could make huge changes.

When I think about these two weeks, memories and experiences buzz into my mind; memories that I will carry with me forever. I never thought I could grow and get this far in such a short period. This experience taught me how important being an effective leader is, and how lucky we are to live as we do, how to live life to the fullest and how to cherish every moment we have.

We visited many beautiful places on Vancouver and met very kind local people. A lot of community service was done, such as fundraising for Nepal, collecting fruit for the homeless at ‘Our Place’ or helping at the EcoVillage, but none of this would have been possible if we could not work as a team. We got a chance to get to know each other very well, and to develop lifelong friendships with people from all over the world.

Y él respondió: lo sé, pero lo que yo siento es de verdad.” Ángel González En el año 2013, en el marco de las actividades CAS (IBDP), se convoca por primera a vez a voluntarios para participar del “Volunteer Readers Programme”, programa de lectura que se desarrolla en CAIF El Abuelo Ubaldo (CAIF del Lago).

Este programa apunta a promover el aprendizaje en general a través de la lectura. A partir de una relación afectiva con los niños, se estimulan los aspectos y logros positivos de su aprendizaje para

su

auto-estima

e

invertir

las

etiquetas negativas que ya acarrean y bloquean el aprendizaje. Además, se enseñan y practican estrategias básicas de lectura que permiten mejorar la fluidez en la decodificación y aumentar la comprensión global y profunda de los textos.

El Programa intenta promover la lectura en el hogar a través del préstamo y regalo de algunos libros. Tan exitoso, enriquecedor y placentero resultó para los niños, educadoras y voluntarios, que se ha consolidado como una actividad más del programa del CAIF. Providencia El Centro Educativo Providencia está ubicado en el Cerro Oeste (Montevideo, Uruguay), más específicamente en el barrio Casabó. Surge en 1994 a instancias de las familias del barrio que percibiendo la necesidad de un espacio educativo para los niños y adolescentes en el horario de la tarde, apoyan la creación del mismo. El Centro Educativo ha ido creciendo y promoviendo la participación de más niños y jóvenes constituyéndose en un espacio socio-educativo orientado al apoyo pedagógico y a la recreación. Actualmente el Centro atiende a 110 niños y 90 adolescentes.

En el marco de las actividades CAS, alumnas de sexto año colaboraron con su trabajo en un Té Solidario a beneficio del Centro Educativo.

Pudimos ver cómo era una recaudación para Providencia, además de experimentar un trabajo nuevo, el cual era servir mesas. Esta tarde sirvió de mucho para mi aprendizaje personal y para poder ayudar a otras personas. Hicimos esto, además por beneficio propio ya que aprendimos muchísimo, también para facilitarle la actividad a las encargadas de la recaudación.

Maite García Cuando fui al evento no tenía ni idea lo que era Providencia, solo sabía que quería ayudar y al estar ahí pasaron un video con toda la información necesaria de Providencia y ahí supe en que estaba ayudando, y me encantó la idea. La pasé muy bien compartiendo un rato con mis amigas y sirviendo a la gente, estuvo muy bueno y por suerte se recaudó mucha plata para este centro.

Francisca Rompani La verdad que fue un gran desafío ya que teníamos que hacer tareas que generalmente no hacemos. Nos asignaron una mesa y debíamos servir distintas cosas (bebida y comida). No fue fácil para mí ya que las personas de la mesa que me tocó a mí eran muy exigentes. Igualmente, logré mentalizarme en no estresarme y servirles de la mejor manera. Terminada la actividad todas se mostraron muy contentas y agradecidas!

Nunca me hubiera imaginado que yo también me iba a sentir así por haber brindado un servicio!

Sinfónica de Montevideo - BSM) performed Symphony No. 1, Lord of the Rings, by Dutch composer Johan De Meij at The British Schools Auditorium.

“Lord of the Rings”

is the first symphony De Meij

composed for a symphonic orchestra and is based on the saga of the same name, written by the famous English author J.R. Tolkien. The piece comprises five movements that musically illustrate the different characters or the most important episodes of the saga.

Yellow Boat of Hope In 2014, Year 6 CAS students led by Mariana Chamyan spearheaded a project to raise funds for the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation. To quote Mariana: “As young citizens of the global community, we took the opportunity to be a lamp that helps to brighten the world…and we encourage all to continue to do small things in a great way”. By the end of 2015, the School family had collected a total of US$1200 to cover the costs of constructing two flat-bottom boats which will help safely transport some 220+ students daily from the outlying Panangatan and Botong islands to educational institutions in Bantayan Island, in North Cebu, Central Philippines.

Last January, I had the chance to personally meet with Jay Jaboneta, one of the prime movers of the Foundation, to further discuss the details of the School’s donation. It was a wonderful surprise to learn that our contribution will be combined with the efforts of CAS students of another IB world school, Cebu International School. The project has led to the realisation of two objectives; first, to help school children in the Philippines to get to school safe and dry, and second, to jointly carry out a project with fellow IB students in another part of the world.

Our sincerest appreciation goes to the Yellow Boat for Hope Foundation for being a lamp that inspires us to do small things in a great way.

Modern Languages Portugués El 16 de abril los grupos de Portugués hicieron una visita didáctica conjuntamente con el Departamento de Humanidades a la Ciudad de Colonia del Sacramento, la más antigua en el territorio uruguayo que fue fundada en enero de 1680 por el gobernador de Río de Janeiro, don Manuel de Lobo Los portugueses dejaron en estas tierras su impronta muy particular en las formas de sus viviendas y demás construcciones: techos bajos cubiertos de tejas, calles sin veredas revestidas de piedras.

Na quinta-feira 16 de abril as turmas de português fizeram uma visita didática conjuntamente com o Departamento de Humanidades à cidade de Colônia do Sacramento, a mais antiga no territorio uruguaio, que foi fundada em janeiro de 1680 pelo governador do Rio de Janeiro, Dom Manuel de Lobo. Esta cidade constitui a única colônia antiga portuguesa nas Américas localizada fora do Brasil. Os portugueses deixaram nestas terras sua muito singular marca nas formas das suas moradias e outras construções: por exemplo, tetos baixos cobertos de telhas e ruas sem calçadas revestidas de pedras.

French El miércoles 13 de mayo, los alumnos de 2° año opción French concurrieron a visitar la Mediateca de la Alianza Francesa de Montevideo. Luego de una breve visita a cargo de la responsable de la Mediateca, se les planteó una actividad en francés de búsqueda de información siguiendo pistas, utilizando tanto el material informático como libros, revistas, CD, películas y guías de viajes.

Al terminar la actividad de 1h30 de duración, la Bibliotecaria destacó el interés y el entusiasmo que nuestros alumnos mostraron en la actividad. Mercredi 13 mai, les élèves de 2ème année option French ont visité la Médiathèque de l´Alliance Francaise de Montevideo. Après une courte visite avec la responsable de la Médiathèque, nos élèves ont recu des pistes pour faire une activité de recherche d´information en francais en utilisant des livres, des logiciels, des revues, des CD, des films ainsi que des brochures touristiques.

À la fin de l´activité qui a eu une durée de 1h30, la responsable de la Médiathèque a remarqué l´intérêt et l´enthousiasme que nos élèves ont montrés pendant toute l´activité.

Techo Construction Que puedo decir de Techos...? Fue tremenda experiencia en la que no sólo sentís que ayudas a una familia a construir un hogar sino que es una oportunidad para conocer a gente de un contexto distinto y muy diferente al nuestro. Cuando volvés de ese fin de semana, no solo ayudaste a construir una vivienda sino que creciste vos como persona. Creo que gana más uno de lo que realmente da.

Fue una experiencia que me saco de mi zona de conforto, conocimiento y me hizo crecer. Fue una oportunidad de conocer a gente increíble y es un lugar donde se forma un ambiente de alegría y amistad. De noche tocamos la guitarra y fue una oportunidad de que creciera la confianza en el grupo y durante el día trabajabas y convivías con la familia a la que le construías su futuro hogar.

Creo que es una experiencia muy enriquecedora tanto en lo que uno puede dar como en lo personal.

La recomiendo para todos los que quieran tener la experiencia de un fin de semana único. Arriba!

Joaquín Maggi – Year 6 Ser voluntaria en TECHO me impactó mucho más de lo que me esperaba. Siempre tuve interés por ayudar a los demás pero nunca lo había experimentado tan de cerca, estando en contacto con las personas a las que les estaba brindando mi ayuda.

Lo primero que me impresionó fue ver en las condiciones en que estaba viviendo la familia a la que fuimos asignados. Esto me hizo apreciar las comodidades y privilegios que tengo en mi vida como mi casa y el hecho de tener una familia estable, cosas en las que nunca me había puesto a pensar antes. Creamos un muy lindo vínculo con la familia y también entre todos los voluntarios.

De noche, cuando volvíamos a la escuelita donde nos quedamos a dormir, charlábamos entre todos o nos juntábamos a tocar la guitarra. También reflexionamos mucho sobre lo que pensábamos acerca de las condiciones en las que viven algunas personas y lo bueno que se siente hacer algo para cambiarlo, en vez de quedarnos sentados esperando que las cosas se hagan solas.

Ver la cara de felicidad de las personas cuando les entregamos la casa fue maravilloso. Nosotros dimos pero nos llevamos muchísimo también. Experiencias y enseñanzas en las que pienso todos los días y que me cambiaron la mentalidad y mi forma de vivir.

Computer Science As part of their College Counselling programme the ORT University gave a series of workshops targeted specifically at the female student population.

The

objective

of

this

specific

workshop was to enable girls from The British Schools to get to know the world of Robotics.

In this context, two teachers from The British Schools, Claudia Sarubbo and Graciela Cardozo, accompanied an eager group of students from second and third year Liceo.

The students shared the workshop with young ladies studying at the University of Illinois, United States of America.

students studied a range of careers, all related to

Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Most of the students attending the workshop had very little experience in programming or Robotics.

workshop

began

leader was pleased to discover that students from The British Schools already knew about Scratch programming, which enabled them to easily access the Robotics programme. The experience was hands on, very productive and met the objectives.

Feedback from the students showed that they found the session fulfilling and, as a result, the majority came back with much enthusiasm wanting to learn more about Robotics and programming.

Two medal winning students from The British Schools, Chloé Romero and Marcelo Pérez, travelled to Buenos Aires from 5th to 9th of December. They represented Uruguay, next to the other Uruguayan medallists.

Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Perú and Uruguay all took part in this important competition.

Homework Centre Homework Centre is a service offered in the Senior School as an extra-curricular activity. It takes place in the Library every week day from 1620 to 1730.

During this time, students can do their homework and projects, study for different subjects or do assessments.

They can use all the resources that the Library provides, including books, magazines and computers. They also have teacher support for any questions they may have.

This service has grown in popularity through the years. Many students stay voluntarily after school hours to attend the Homework Centre, valuing the importance of the Library in their academic work.

Community Projects in Forms Every year, each Form group in Senior plans, organises and carries out a community project. The objective of this task is to collaborate with the School (or some organisation linked to it), turning much of the education in values learnt during the Form Periods into action.

Many groups organise activities with the Junior School (recycling campaigns or protecting the environment), or with the Senior School (helmet campaign, collaboration with the anti-bullying campaign), or with organisations associated with the School such as Logros. Students put into practice the notions of empathy, community commitment, and teamwork, among others.

Stress Management / Attention-Concentration

The latest research in the fields of Neuroscience and Yoga emphasises the impact of mindfulness on study time.

The former music room was transformed into a silent room, where relaxation and concentration exercises took place during morning or lunch breaks. Mind and body exercises are combined with minutes of silence to provide an essential pause during the school day.

During the last month of IB classes, before the study leave, Nuria Sanguinetti led some concentration and relaxation workshops to maximise study time for Y6 students. These workshops were also included in some Y2, Y3 and Y4 Form Periods.

I was also interested to read more about the current scientific research about the brain. I found the key is silence, which leads to relaxation and therefore, concentration. I think it is important to have a break, a moment of peace and silence, at some point throughout the day in order to feel better and be able to do things with a different and more focused perspective.

At school we are constantly bombarded with reminders about all the work we have to do, and all this “noise” makes it almost impossible to stop for a minute and just relax. In the silent room, I enjoyed having a moment of pause in the middle of the day to think about nothing, just experience the silence. Relaxation brings concentration, so it is ideal to have this space at least once a week to teach us how to slow down and then perform better in class. It is good to feel at peace with ourselves.

The British Schools once again produced some amazing results in a competition which is open to schools in both Argentina and Uruguay. Many students won certificates and a special well done must go to the students pictured below who achieved First Prize in each of the main categories: Giorgina Sexton (Senior winner), Chloe Romero (Elementary winner) and Chiara Tucci (Junior winner). A special mention for Mercedes Bañales who came third in the Junior competition.

Science On Friday, 9th October, Year 5 Senior School students presented their IB Group IV Project.

This is a compulsory Group IV multidisciplinary (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science) investigation designed, performed and concluded by students under the supervision of their IB Science Teachers. In this project students studying different scientific disciplines can work together fostering the exchange of knowledge, skills and concepts learnt during their courses.

This year the chosen topic was ENERGY. Students investigated nuclear energy, conductivity, solar energy, biogas, the energy provided by food and microwaves among other very interesting themes.

The Green Room and the new Science Labs were the places chosen to present the results of their investigations to the Science Teachers who evaluated them, and to the whole community of The British Schools who came along to observe the hard and interesting work of the Year 5 IB students and their final conclusions.

We congratulate both students and teachers for the high standard of the presentations and the enthusiasm demonstrated.

Interhouse The School’s birthday on 8th October was celebrated with the Interhouse competitions.

This year the main theme was “Classic Children’s Stories”. This fascinating topic was proposed by the Captains and Vice-Captains of the different Houses when they started preparing for this celebration in May. This gave rise to a very creative, fun and memorable day where the School Spirit shone from dawn til dusk.

The banners were thoughtfully prepared by the students and their House Teachers. The Year 1 students performed dances and choreographies to the rhythm of soundtracks from classic children’s stories. The whole atmosphere transported us back to our childhoods where the Three Little Pigs, Red Riding Hood and Cinderella dwelt.

An added surprise this year was the visit of clowns riding on bikes and wearing helmets promoting the use of this important protective headwear.

All in all, the Senior Interhouse 2015 was a splendid and unforgettable celebration.

Book Fair

Early in the year, the School held a Book Fair to celebrate the pleasure and benefits of reading. The Green Room provided the perfect location for this well-attended event enjoyed by students, staff, parents and families.

Roald Dahl Month In September, Year 1 students celebrated Roald Dahl’s birth month, with an array of events around his birthday on 13th September.

They read a

comprehensive range of his books and produced an exhibition which included wall displays and oral presentations for classmates and the rest of the generation. Celebrations ended with a “whoopsy wiffling” party!

Library The A.J Hobson Library is central to learning and life in Senior.

The Library plays a key role in that it provides a place for encouraging innovation, curiosity, and problem solving.

A

catalyst for inquiry, it offers a comfortable space for students to work individually or in groups. Throughout the year, many students came to the Library looking for material or to make new discoveries.

This year we also enjoyed a week-long Book Fair and the visit of the Uruguayan Author, Federico Ivanier, who delighted students and staff with his stories. In addition, the Library hosted different activities organised by the English Department such as the Roald Dahl exhibition - a competition to give younger students the opportunity to share what they had read and learnt about the author with their peers; and the St. Andrew’s Society of The River Plate Essay Competition – a writing competition to challenge creative and intellectual talents.

As part of the extension activities, the Librarians visited classes to help older students with their research and the correct citation of their written tasks.

Workviews & Worklinks Career Counsellors assist Senior School students to develop personal career plans. This is done through career education programmes that include formal lessons, guest presentations, work experience programmes and excursions. The School’s Career Counsellor works collaboratively with students, teachers, School authorities and the Parents’ Committee, University Representatives and Admissions Officers, employers, community agencies and training providers to ensure that up-to-date information and programmes are relevant to students and their communities.

The British Schools comprehensive activities include: • Informing students about career development programmes and lessons.

• Providing individual career counselling (one on one sessions).

• Organising job placement and work experience programmes (WORKLINKS).

• Undertaking continuous industry and labour market research, including liaison with training providers and professional bodies.

• Organising presentations in the School, by successful members of the community in different areas (WORKLINKS).

• Preparing and organising an International University Fair.

• Conducting surveys and follow-up of students who graduate from TBS to learn what they do one, three and seven years after they graduate.

WORKLINKS The Worklinks Programme run by the School is designed to accompany students in their transition from school to university and later into the world of work. The aim is to build bridges between these different stages.

Internships help students to better understand their fields of interest, help cement (or at times change) their career goals, and give them the experience employers demand - even of college graduates. The Parents’ Committee plays a central and active role in contacting the companies that receive students and in organising the event.

WORKVIEWS The Workviews Programme is geared to giving students the chance of listening to and exchanging ideas and opinions with high-level professionals in their area or areas of interest.

In all panels, students also have the chance to listen to students from different universities in Uruguay and abroad.

Again, the Parents’ Committee helps in the bringing together a wide range of professionals network that visit the School.

INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY FAIR The University Fair seeks to: • bring universities from Uruguay and around the world together; • enable students at The British Schools and other educational institutions in Montevideo, as well as parents and other guests, to meet admissions officers and representatives and; • have access to first hand quality information that will help them make better and informed choices regarding their career plans.

Cuesta creer que pienso en el colegio cada vez menos como algo de todos los días, y cada vez más con un poco de nostalgia, recordando algunos de los tantos momentos que se pasaron aquí.

From the

Head Girl Today we are not saying goodbye, as we are not starting a new journey. We never stopped walking. We are continuing on our way, which we started alone, but today, I can say it is anything but lonely.

It took around 6 years for me to realise what was the most valuable thing that The British Schools had offered us during our time here: Friends. Friends became ours with time. Time allows us to share moments which become enduring, as they will live forever with us in our hearts.

While writing this speech, together with my friends, we came up with several of these memories that made us burst into laughter and at the same time long for the old times.

For example, the interesting fear of who our locker neighbour would be. The feeling of despair, after having carefully packed the gym clothes the night before, realising that you were missing the white socks. Form periods, where we learned that “es un siniestro, no un accidente” and about the shocking “caso Roxy”.

The magnificent “viveza criolla”, which stood out whenever it was Cross Country time. Depending on the computer’s clock until the very last minute to be dismissed. Unplugging the mouses and keyboards from the IT computers, just for the fun of it. And to be even more precise: the UK anecdotes which we are unable to describe with just words; our stomachs making noises plus trying to avoid coughing and sneezing during the IB examinations, which transformed into an orchestra, embodying the satisfactory suffering of going through the IB process, amongst other great experiences.

Some of us joined the School at the age of 4, 12, and even 16. Nevertheless, we were able to form this great family that we are today and that I am extremely proud to be part of.

On behalf of this family, the 2015 generation, I would like to thank our teachers, School authorities and most special of all, our parents, for making this moment possible and supporting us throughout these years.

“It is time to face the future, to find what we love and let it kill us”, as Bukowski once said. I am most certain that each one of us will reach our objective, always remembering the words of Francis of Assisi: “Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”

I am pleased to say that these are just a tiny portion of the stories which we keep within us.

Every single day, each moment and instance which we lived, inside and outside the School made all of us who we are today. I would dare to define all of us as a collection of all these wonderful memories, which we shared and will continue to share. As they say, “A thing is mighty big when time and distance cannot shrink it”.

Graduation Graduation marks the end of one great effort and the beginning of another. As students you have taken on difficult assignments, passed tough exams. You have poured over your studies late into the night and into the early morning. You have worked hard. You have also played hard. You have stumbled and gotten back up again, occasionally as a consequence of playing hard. You also did your fair share of growing up over your time at The British Schools. You have had a chance to explore academically. You have had a chance to discover through extra-curricular activities, through School plays and Model United Nations events, through athletics, rugby and hockey, through social events and the delightful UK Trip to name but a few. Above all, you have had a chance to develop ideas, opinions and convictions that matter, that you can take forward into the world.

So today you are setting off on your next adventure. You are beginning, and what makes beginnings so thrilling is the unknown. What is vital, is this initial confrontation with the unknown and how you decide to embrace it. The world is waiting for you. Explore it through your own humanity. Be guided by your higher self. Always, no matter what, make integrity your North. Don’t be dissuaded or discouraged, do allow yourself to be side tracked in achieving what you want. Get off the fast track, go out and wander, reflect and listen to your heart.

Farewells Annie Prusky – JUNIOR Annie’s connection to The British Schools began very early on as a student.

In 1990 she became part of the Staff, first as a Teaching Assistant, then as a Form Teacher in Kinder and Infants, and later as a valuable member of the Learning Support Team. Through her expertise and professionalism, accompanied by her loving nature, Annie touched the lives of hundreds of students throughout these years, and her warmth, camaraderie and generous character will be missed by everyone. We wish Annie all the best in her new challenges.

Renee Zanoni - JUNIOR Renée began her journey at The British Schools as a student in Senior and later, in 1979, as a member of staff; first as a Music Teacher and Teaching Assistant, then as a Form Teacher in the Infant Department and finally developing the Music Department. Renée has been responsible for orchestrating many marvellous musical interludes: presentations by the School Choirs, the Recorder and instruments group and at numerous School productions throughout the years. Not only meticulous and thorough in her work, Renée has also been a very caring and dedicated companion, always ready to help others. We thank Renée, for her dedication, loyalty and all that she has done for the School.

Roberto Cameto – SENIOR Fueron más de treinta anos en The British Schools. Inés Mara - SENIOR Astronomy is a science that seeks to explain everything that we observe in the Universe, from the comets and planets in our own solar system to distant galaxies, to the echoes of the Big Bang. Following in her father’s footsteps Ines Mara taught Astronomy to our 4th year students for over 20 years, both inside and outside the classroom. Many will remember those evenings spent observing the winter sky from the School fields under her guidance. We wish Inés success in her future projects.
