Dear Members,

July marks the heart of the summer holiday season, a time when many families are travelling, reconnecting with loved ones, and taking a welldeserved break from their usual routines. While the Club is naturally a little quieter during this period, there remains a lively atmosphere throughout our facilities, with members continuing to come together to dine, socialise, stay active, and enjoy all that the Club has to offer.

One of the highlights of this year’s holiday programme is our Summer Camp, running over five exciting weeks from 6th July to 7th August. With both weekly and daily enrolment options available, families can enjoy the flexibility of choosing a schedule that best suits their plans throughout the school break. Carefully planned to cater to a variety of interests and age groups, the programme promises something different each day while providing a fun, safe, and supportive environment for every child.

Beyond the Summer Camp, there are plenty of ways for members to make the most of July. Whether gathering with friends over a meal, participating in sporting activities, or simply spending quality time with family, there are many opportunities to stay connected and enjoy the season.

As you think about the return after the holidays, we encourage you to make use of the newly refurbished function and events suites in the main building. Behind the scenes, we have also concluded works to upgrade the administration offices, all in our continuing quest to provide great facilities and remain environmentally friendly.

Wishing you and your families a wonderful July and an enjoyable summer holiday.

CLUB MANAGEMENT

The summer season is well underway, and our first full kids camp of the year is now in progress. The energy around the club is fantastic, with every single week fully booked and filled with young participants. The Club is buzzing with excited children experiencing an unforgettable break, and our team has designed a diverse programme of activities to keep everyone engaged. We thank all the parents for their continued support in making these camps a massive success.

Our reciprocal club network has grown extensively over the last 12 months, and we are incredibly proud to announce that our worldwide network is now nearly reaching the milestone of 200 premier clubs. Membership with us grants you exclusive access to high quality establishments globally. If you are travelling over the summer or later in the year, we highly encourage you to utilise this benefit, as planning a visit to a reciprocal club adds immense value and comfort to your international travel experiences.

As this article goes to print, the World Cup is in full swing, and the club has enjoyed a phenomenal atmosphere during both the night and morning screenings. I want to extend a massive thank you to all our amazing members who have come out to support their teams and bring such life to the premises. Spectators have been treated to goals galore and vibrant camaraderie in every single match, and we are all keeping our fingers crossed that the final match lives up to our high expectations.

British High Commissioner Nik Mehta’s Foreword

Supporting British nationals in Singapore

Having been part of The British Club community for several years, I’ve come to really appreciate the role the Supporting British nationals is one of our most important responsibilities at the British High Commission in Singapore. Whether you live here, are visiting for business or study, or are just passing through, we know that needing consular help can come at one of the most stressful moments in your life. Our role is to provide clear, practical support and to work closely with the Singaporean authorities so British nationals can get the help they need as quickly as possible. Each year, we support British nationals in Singapore with a wide range of issues, from hospitalisations and deaths overseas to arrests and lost passports. While we cannot remove every difficulty, we can make sure people are treated with care, given the right information, and supported through what can often be a very difficult experience. Our commitment is to respond professionally, compassionately and with a strong understanding of the local context in Singapore.

Our Consular Team: Nadine and Bill

We’re Nadine and Bill and together we make up the Consular team at the British High Commission in Singapore. You might be surprised that we are such a small team, but many of the processes that you would normally associate with a Brith High Commission or Embassy – such as passports, visas and emergency travel documents - are handled in regional Hubs across the world. This allows us to focus on what matters most locally: supporting British nationals in Singapore who may be going through a difficult time.

Contact details for consular services are below. All calls are initially dealt with by the Consular Contact Centre which is staffed by consular staff who have the same training as we do. They provide advice on all cases and operate 24/7. If a case needs in-country support or knowledge, then the Contact Centre passes that call to us. This means that we can help the most vulnerable people as quickly as possible.

The British Government provides travel advice for all countries around the world. Sign up for updates to our travel advice for Singapore and any other country you plan to visit. Always check the advice for each country before you travel for the latest on entry requirements, safety and security, and health.

To stay in touch please follow us on social media @UKinSingapore

If you are a British national in Singapore and require urgent consular assistance, call the 24/7 hotline at +65 6424 4200.

The Family Fun Day was a wonderful success, filled with laughter, activities, and quality time shared among families. From engaging games for all ages to delicious refreshments and lively entertainment, the day perfectly captured the spirit of togetherness that defines our community.

Hot on its heels, the King’s Birthday Pool Party made a big splash. Members enjoyed a lively atmosphere by the pool, complete with music, festive décor, and a refreshing lineup of activities. It was heartening to see so many familiar faces and new friendships being formed under the sun.

MEET MIA

For the past 10 years, Mia has been a familiar and welcoming presence at The British Club. As Assistant Manager of Windsor Arms, she plays an integral role in ensuring members and guests enjoy exceptional dining experiences, while leading her team with warmth, dedication and professionalism.

Reflecting on her decade-long journey with the Club, Mia describes it as both rewarding and fulfilling. Over the years, she has grown alongside the Club and built lasting relationships with members, colleagues and guests. What she enjoys most about her role is being involved in the day-to-day operations and creating memorable experiences for those who visit Windsor Arms. She takes particular pride in guiding her team and fostering a culture of genuine hospitality.

Among the many memorable moments in her career, one experience stands out above the rest. In 2016, Mia had the opportunity to be part of The British Club team aboard the Royal Albatross during the visit of Her Royal Highness Princess Anne to Singapore for the Commonwealth Agricultural Conference. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a proud moment in her hospitality career.

When asked what makes The British Club special, Mia believes it is the sense of belonging that members feel whenever they step through its doors. Many members describe the Club as a second home, and its welcoming atmosphere, family-friendly environment and beautiful surroundings create a truly unique experience that keeps members returning year after year.

As for her favourite dish at the Club, Mia does not hesitate to recommend the Butter Chicken (Murgh Makhani). Rich, creamy and packed with flavour, she considers it one of the finest curries in Singapore and a must-try for anyone visiting the Club.

Outside of work, Mia enjoys spending time at home, experimenting with new recipes and baking. She also loves singing karaoke, a pastime she proudly attributes to her Filipino roots. These simple pleasures help her relax, recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Throughout her career, Mia has been inspired by several mentors who have guided her along the way. The most valuable lessons she has learned are to think creatively, remain open to learning and always stay humble, regardless of position or achievement.

For anyone considering a career in hospitality, Mia believes passion is essential. While the industry can be demanding, it is also incredibly rewarding. Her personal philosophy is simple: hospitality is about creating genuine connections and memorable experiences. As she puts it, it is all about “hospitality with personality.”

After a decade of dedicated service, Mia continues to embody the values that make The British Club such a special place, welcoming members with a smile and ensuring every visit feels like coming home.

From Your Wardrobe to Someone’s World

Earlier this year, you cleared out a corner of your cupboard. Maybe it was a dress you loved but never quite wore. A blazer that felt a little last-season. A pair of shoes that had done their miles. You folded them up, brought them to the Club, and thought: someone else should have these.

Here’s what actually happened next.

Your donations made their way to Cloop, a Singapore circular fashion organisation with a beautifully practical mission: keep textiles in use, out of landfill, and in community hands. What Cloop does with what you give is genuinely worth knowing.

First stop: the APSN (Association for Persons with Special Needs) Centre for Adults. Twenty trainees with special needs receive your donations and begin the careful work of sorting them. This is skilled, meaningful labour. They are building real retail and logistics experience, one garment at a time, and the sorting they do is the heartbeat of the whole supply chain that follows. Some of those items then travel onward to the Open Wardrobe Thrift Store inside APSN Cafe for All, where the trainees also help run the floor. A portion of every sale goes back to APSN. Your blouse is, in a very real sense, funding a job and a future. Now here’s where it gets bigger.

Four times a year, Cloop holds large weekend fashion swaps at Anchorpoint Mall. The items your donations become are laid out on tables for the public to choose from freely. No price tags. No judgement. Just good things finding new homes. Shoes, bags, accessories, clothing for all shapes and sizes. Cloop has been doing swaps like this since their earliest days at Crane on Kim Yam Road, now reimagined as New Bahru, and the community that turns up is remarkable in its diversity.

And when the swap events end, what’s left doesn’t go to waste either. Those items are passed along to partners, including Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM), who distribute them to domestic helpers and migrant workers across Singapore. Most of the clothing skews female, but mostly the men attend: they choose carefully, picking pieces to send home to wives, sisters, mothers. That blazer you hesitated over for months becomes a gift crossing an ocean.

The environmental arithmetic is just as striking. Since 2022, our members have donated almost 2.8 tonnes of textiles, saving approximately 6,000,000 litres of water that would have been used in the production processes. Consider that the fashion industry uses more water than any sector except agriculture and accounts for roughly 10% of global carbon emissions. When you donate rather than discard, you are stepping out of that cycle. What I want you to take away from this is simple. The British Club’s textile drive was not a box-ticking exercise. It was a genuine act of community, and it had a ripple effect you couldn’t see from the collection point. From your hands to the sorters at APSN, to the swap tables at Anchorpoint, to a worker sending something home to someone she or he loves. That is a long, warm chain, and you started it.

Thank you for being part of The British Club’s circular economy efforts and supporting Singapore’s local community to stay sustainable!

You – our wonderful British Club Members –donated generously during this year’s textile donation drive (thank you!)
Cloop’s trainees with special needs sorted your clothes skillfully and systematically.
Cloop holds large weekend fashion swaps at Anchorpoint Mall, giving your clothes a second home.
Singapore Ministry of Manpower distributes the remaining clothes to domestic helpers and migrant workers across Singapore, eventually becomes a gift crossing an ocean!

British Club Wine Appreciation Society – Burgundy Evening with Domaine Faiveley

On 20th May, members of the British Club Wine Appreciation Society gathered at the Windsor Arms for a fabulous evening exploring the 2023 Burgundy vintage with wines from Domaine Faiveley.

The line-up provided an excellent introduction to Burgundy, beginning with the fresh and approachable Bourgogne Chardonnay, followed by the more structured Mercurey Le Vallon Blanc. We then moved into the reds, starting with the fruit-forward Bourgogne Pinot Noir before progressing to the charming Mercurey La Framboisière, a wine that proved particularly popular on the night.

The tasting continued with two highlights from the Côte d’Or: a refined Vosne-Romanée Village 2023, showcasing the elegance for which the village is famous, and the excellent Beaune 1er Cru Clos de l’Écu 2023, offering greater depth and complexity while retaining the freshness that characterises the vintage.

The tasting was generously hosted by our friends at Grand Vin, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks to François Barel and Teo Zhi Ying for guiding us through the wines and sharing their knowledge of Burgundy, the Faiveley estate, and the 2023 vintage.

As if that were not enough, members were also treated to a special surprise when the Professor kindly shared a magnificent bottle of 2008 Grands Échezeaux Grand Cru. Mature Burgundy is rarely encountered in such company, and it provided a fascinating contrast to the youthful energy of the 2023s.

The 2023 vintage itself impressed with its balance and accessibility. The whites displayed bright fruit and freshness, while the reds combined attractive fruit character with supple tannins and excellent drinkability. If there was a common theme throughout the evening, it was that these are wines likely to give pleasure both now and over the coming years.

The event was offered complimentary to section members, and it was wonderful to see such a strong turnout and lively discussion around the table.

Thank you once again to François, Teo, and Grand Vin for their generosity and enthusiasm, and to all members who attended.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back for our next tasting, which is planned for September.

I Rising Stars Tournament a Success

Congratulations to Michelle Cheong and Robert Liew for finishing first and second respectively in our inaugural Advanced Beginner Intraclub Pickleball Tournament, held on May 20.

It was a closely fought contest between the top two players, with both winning all of their matches. In the end, the title was decided by point differential, giving Michelle the narrow edge.

A total of 16 players took part in an intense and fastpaced round robin competition, expertly organised by committee members Aneetha Vine, Konal Sharma and Marina Krishnan. Throughout the afternoon, spectators and players alike were treated to an entertaining mix of dinks and speed-ups, lobs and smashes, and plenty of laughter.

Rounding out the top five were Midori Cannon, Kwee Lian Chong and Dr. Chi Way Chung, all of whom delivered excellent performances throughout the event.

The tournament concluded on a high note with drinks, pizza and chicken wings at Scores, giving everyone the opportunity to relax, socialise and celebrate a successful evening of pickleball. All in all, it was a memorable event for many of our developing players, who experienced the true essence of pickleball — a combination of competitive play, camaraderie and good fun. We now look forward to our next challenge as we take on Singapore Swimming Club on 28 th June.

BARRACUDAS Section Report

The Barracudas Dive Clinic, run by Total Swimming on 23 rd May at the UWCSEA East Campus pool, was a tremendous success and a fantastic learning experience for everyone involved. Thirty swimmers took part in the session, with transport provided by bus from The British Club to the pool, making for a smooth and enjoyable day. Swimmers were grouped according to their ability levels, allowing coaches to provide personalised instruction and help each participant progress at their own pace. Whether learning to dive from the blocks for the first time or refining advanced race-start techniques, swimmers benefited from expert coaching in a safe and supportive environment. Most importantly, every swimmer left with greater confidence, improved skills and a sense of achievement.

With the season drawing to a close, excitement is now building for the Barracudas End-of-Season Summer Pool Party on 19 th June. Swimmers and families are looking forward to celebrating another successful season together with pool games, dinner and plenty of fun in the sun. The event will provide a wonderful opportunity for swimmers to relax and enjoy time with their teammates, while parents can mingle and reflect on a season filled with hard work, progress and memorable achievements.

It will also be a chance to thank our coaches and families for their continued support. With a great atmosphere and strong British Club spirit, the Summer Pool Party promises to be the perfect way to celebrate the end of another fantastic Barracudas season.

Happy Summer Holidays to all our swimmers!

June 2026 Recap

June was a busy month for the golf section with one of our marquee annual events – the Pairs Invitational; a revival of inter-club competition with the American Club and Tanglin Club; the season finale of the Monday Night Golf League; and our regular monthly games in Malaysia and Singapore.

Pairs Invitational at Sentosa Golf Club (Serapong Course)

We had a fantastic turnout of 40 players (twenty 2-ball teams) for the Pairs Invitational tournament. As with prior years, it was a fun-filled day of challenging golf played over a truly world-class course. Despite a rain delay we were able to complete the round, and David Craig and Tom Rhodes (guest) emerged victorious with a dramatic eagle on the 18th hole to claim the title and the trophy. Congratulations to the top five teams for placing and claiming some very nice awards:

1 st Place: David Craig & Tom Rhodes (guest)

2 nd Place: Pete Macfarlane & Matt Bowler

3 rd Place: Kevin Wotherspoon & David Powell

4 th Place: Christopher Forbes & Elliot Murdoch (guest)

5 th Place: James Harvey & Darren Stetzel

Colonial Cup and British Club vs. Tanglin Club Match at Orchid CC

On 18 th June, a team of eight British Club golfers joined teams from the American Club and Tanglin Club to revive the Colonial Cup competition, a friendly three-way inter-club match which had not been played in recent years. The American Club took home the Colonial Cup trophy, but the day was a win for everyone as it renewed our commitment to arranging interclub golf outings and a great time was had by all players.

Thanks to more sign-ups than spots available for the “main event”, we held a side friendly match between the British Club and Tanglin Club with the TC Team taking the honours.

We look forward to more matches soon – and hopefully more favourable results!

Monday Night Golf League

The British Club team wrapped up another competitive Monday Night League campaign with a highly respectable 9th-place finish out of 25 teams. Throughout the season, the squad demonstrated excellent commitment and depth, with players regularly stepping up across a wide variety of formats. The mix of individual, pairs and team competitions tested every aspect of the team’s game, from consistency and course management to teamwork and match-play resilience.

Individual performances also played a significant role in the team’s success. Pete Macfarlane emerged as one of the team’s most effective contributors, accumulating an impressive points tally across nine events. Scott Irvine, affectionately known as “Mr. Reliable”, was another standout performer, providing a consistently dependable presence throughout the season. His strong results were reflected in the overall individual league standings, where he finished an excellent 17th place among all competitors.

The season concluded with the Grand Final, where the team was unable to replicate the impressive form shown throughout the regular season. While the overall team result fell short of expectations, there were still notable individual performances to celebrate. Scott Irvine continued his excellent season by finishing 4th in the Net C Division, while Andrew Clarke recorded a creditable 20th-place finish in the highly competitive Net B Division.

Finishing 9th in a league of 25 teams represents a strong achievement and reflects the steady improvement shown over the course of the season. Congratulations to all players who represented the British Club throughout the season.

Monthly Medal Games in Malaysia and Singapore

The golf section held our monthly weekend game in Malaysia – this month at Horizon Hills – and our monthly weekday game at Keppel Golf Club in Singapore, along with a casual nine-hole outing at Mandai Executive Golf Course.

We will continue organizing games for the section over the summer months as we gear up for more big events later in the year, including the annual Club Championship and Order of Merit tournament.

Golfers of all ages and abilities are welcome to join the section. Please reach out if you are interested!

British Club Vets 2 Squash Team – 2026 Season

As Mark Twain said:“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter!” With this positive attitude, 15 of us signed up to join the BC Vets 2 squash team in the Singapore National Squash Vets (Over 40) League. This meant that our Friday nights would be spent either on our hallowed Bukit Tinggi courts or in the wild lands of Toa Payoh, Kallang or Tampines.

After 14 matches (seven home and seven away), we ended up with a respectable record of four wins and ten losses, which left us in fifth place in the eight-team league.

Of much greater importance than the actual results was the fact that we always fielded a full four-man team, had a lot of fun along the way, and followed our maxim of“win or lose, have a booze” after every match!

Our two best performers were James Buchanan (six wins, two losses) and Alex Hopkins (five wins, two losses). The unluckiest player was Sander Holman (0–5), as he usually played at number one against the opposition’s best players and very nearly won two of his matches.

Our vice-captain, Kevin Wotherspoon, played eight matches, the most of any player, and captained the team on several occasions – well done, Kevin!

Leo Polonieki played seven matches and, although he won only one of them, was always the most positive and enthusiastic member of the team.

Soumit Goswani and Ashley Nicholas were also great supporters of the team this year, as both played five matches. Alex Weeks picked up an injury and therefore managed only three matches. Get well soon!

Our only unbeaten team member was Raymond Kwee, who played one match and won it – please play more games in 2027! Phil Duckworth managed a creditable record of one win and one loss.

Alas, James Buchanan, Alex Hopkins and Phil Duckworth will all be leaving our fried-rice paradise later this year. Thank you for all your efforts.

Thanks to all 13 players who represented us in 2026, and thanks also to the Club for hosting our home matches in fine style. Here’s to 2027!

A Tale of Two Ladies - The British Club Open 2026

It was the best of times it was the worst of times, it was the age of winners it was the age of errors, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of injury.

The 2026 British Club Open has wrapped up with some extraordinary, highquality tennis, some incredibly close games, but also some heartbreak and painful injuries.

In the men’s singles, Rich Wetski retained his title with a close win over Przemek in the semi final and a battling victory over Matt Rawbone in the final. The ladies’ draw featured some real tussles too. Myrna Jivraj, twice runner up in this event, battled past Emma Pike in a marathon 3 set semifinal and backed that up with a win over Clytie Morgan in the final. Those two, in fact, were the stars of the tournament

Matt bounced back quickly from his singles loss, and he and Jonny Wright scythed through a stacked men’s doubles field, winning a very entertaining final against Przemek Gawda and Danie Botha. It was in the doubles events that one of the themes of the event really made itself known. Before it all started, Yu Liang had withdrawn with a broken leg sustained on the practice court and Lee Eun Ran had to withdraw from the MXD. In his first doubles match while chasing a drop shot, Matt collided with a net post and was hobbling for a few days afterwards (both he and the post are doing fine now). Things got worse as Ted Roy also chased a drop a few days later, played the shot of the tournament around the side of the net post for the winner, but tore his hamstring in the process. We hoped the ‘bad things come in threes’ adage would mean we could relax but sadly not. Convenor and formidable doubles player Richard Claydon then tore a bicep tendon firing down a serve and was also out for the tournament. Surely that was it?

We return to our leading ladies. As well as contesting the singles, Myrna and Clytie both made it to the final of the mixed doubles and, playing together, to the decider in the ladies’ doubles too. Both matches were scheduled for the same Sunday afternoon with the ladies on first. Emma and Mari won the first set but Myrna & Clytie staged a great fightback in the second only for Myrna to land awkwardly chasing a lob and break a bone in her foot. The injury curse struck again. The tennis committee wish all the injured players a quick and complete recovery.

A big part of the BC Open is the plate tournament for those who lose their first match in the main draw. Congratulations to Kat Thrall and Kartik Krishnamurthy who won the ladies’ and men’s singles plate titles.
