MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

7

For this issue’s Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to feature The British Club’s President, Steve Settle. President Settle wears a couple of other hats in addition to his involvement with the Club. He is a Wealth Manager with Globaleye, an independently owned firm of private wealth managers that provides financial planning solutions to over 10,000 corporate and private clients worldwide. In Singapore, Steve works predominantly with the expatriate community. Additionally, he is the Regional Director - Asia for the CFO Centre. His team of 10 senior finance executives in Singapore is part of a global network of more than 300 chief financial officers. They primarily work with small to medium sized businesses helping to accelerate their growth and development by providing the benefits of their experience and expertise, on an affordable part time basis. Steve is very active within the Squash and Golf sections. He was part of the winning team that led our Squash Section to victory in the COSMO League 2014, and convener of the Golf Section that finally reclaimed the Ryder Cup. In this exclusive interview, he shares with us some insights into his life in Singapore with his family. What brought you to Singapore and The British Club? In 1996, I emigrated to Sydney, Australia where I met my gorgeous wife, Nikki and we had our two beautiful boys, Oscar and Louis. I was working for Thomson Financial (now Thomson Reuters) as the CFO for Asia Pacific and we decided to relocate the regional headquarters to Singapore. We packed up the two babies and moved on a two-year contract – that was fifteen years ago! What do you love most about the Club? There are many things and they have changed over the years. When the boys were toddlers we used to love coming to the Verandah and parking the boys in the playroom for a short while (which they loved) while we sat not too far away and sneaked in a few glasses of wine and took a welcome break. We have made some terrific friends through the Club, some still here and others dotted around the globe. I have enjoyed immensely (and still do), my time on court/course and socially with members of the squash and golf sections. However, if I did have to choose one thing it would be the welcome feeling I get whenever we set foot on the premises. We have many fantastic members of staff at the Club, some who have been here since we arrived and a smiling face is never far away. What prompted the move to step up to be the President for The British Club? It was actually quite a natural progression. After being Squash Convenor for four years, I took over Golf. Subsequently, I assumed the role of Sports Chairman (joining the Main Committee) and then Finance Chairman, to utilise my professional qualifications and experience. After becoming Vice President, the opportunity to become President presented itself. It was not an easy decision as I already had a very busy work and family schedule. Whilst it was certainly something I wanted to do, Nikki and I both felt the timing was not quite right. I distinctly remember considering that the opportunity may never present itself again and questioning whether I would be happy to reflect back and know that I had passed it up. I wasn’t and I am so glad I made the leap. With your busy schedule, how do you balance work, family, and Club commitments? To be honest, sometimes I don’t, but I do my best and overall I think I manage pretty well. Three things help me. The discipline learned in my engineering degree and accountancy training has given me a very logical, orderly and methodical way of going about things. Both of my jobs are results rather than attendance focused - giving me time flexibility. Finally, I am determined to always do what I say I will do, to always keep my word and to never let anyone down. I am sure I have not always succeeded, but that is what I strive for. When you are in need of a get-away, you will go to… We had our honeymoon in Fiji and a wonderful week in the Maldives and I would return to either in a flash. Closer to home, we are still huge fans of Bali. There are still plenty of tranquil spots where you can sit and watch the world go by, with a cocktail of choice in your hand. My hobbies… I will continue to play squash as long as the body allows and I love my golf, which I find an incredible mental challenge and test of skill. I also like to read about new things and ways to improve. What would you like to change at the Club? If I could waive a wand and make it happen, I would like to see more women involved in all the committees and on the Main Committee. I truly believe that we are missing so much by not having more female input. SINGAPORE’S Hilltop Retreat

On Thursday, 29 January, The British Club hosted the SKÅL International Singapore for lunch at the Elizabeth Suite. Making this luncheon extra special is the attendance of Guest of Honour, Mexico Ambassador to Singapore Rogelio Granguillhome Morfin. The highlights of this event include an introductory video of the beautiful country that is Mexico, highlights from SKÅL President Sean Boyle’s trip to Mexico last year for the annual SKÅL World Congress, and a traditional Mexican dance performance. Weaving his magic touch, British Club’s Executive Chef Sunny Sia prepared a set of Mexican goodies containing home-made taco chips and salsa sauce for all guests to bring home.

The most radical changes to pensions in almost a century By David Pugh

The Government will soon introduce a raft of ground-breaking changes that will affect UK pensions, which will have a massive effect on your retirement plans. From April this year, the majority of pension investors aged at least 55 will have total freedom over how they take an income or a lump sum from their pension. They will be able to take the whole fund as cash in one go, with 25% tax-free and the rest taxed as income.

Do your lump sums Alternatively, smaller lump sums can be taken as and when you like, with 25% of each withdrawal tax free and the rest taxed as income. So you could opt to take up to 25% tax-free and a regular taxable income from the remainder of the pension fund, as it will remain invested. Any withdrawals you make above the tax-free amount will be taxed as income at your marginal rate. So if you are a UK basicrate (20%) taxpayer, any income you draw from your pension will be added to any other income you receive (such as your salary) which could then push you into the higher (40%) or even top-rate (45%) Income Tax bracket. It should also be possible to take the tax-free cash immediately and the taxable income at a later date.

Death tax scrapped More good news sees the 55% pension ‘death tax’ abolished. Currently, it is only possible to pass a pension on as a tax-free lump sum if you die before you reach 75 years of age provided you have not taken any tax-free cash or income. But from April 2015 this tax charge will thankfully be abolished.

If you die after age 75, your beneficiaries have three options: a) take the whole fund as cash in one go: the pension fund will be subject to 45% tax. b) take regular income through an annuity or income draw down: the income will be subject to income tax at your beneficiary’s or beneficiaries’ marginal rate. c)

take periodical lump sums through income drawdown: the lump-sum payments will be treated as income, so subject to Income Tax at your beneficiary’s or beneficiaries’ marginal rate.

Sound advice In his Budget speech, the Chancellor announced that everyone should have access to free retirement and pension advice. This service will be provided by the Citizens Advice Bureau and the Pensions Advisory Service. This will be a free service and your pension provider will be required to tell you about this impartial guidance. Finally, the age at which you can draw your pension, currently 55, is set to increase to 57 from 2028 and from then increase in line with the rise in the State Pension age.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR David has over 18 years industry experience and specialises in pension planning and portfolio management. He has attained the highest qualifications available in his field. He is an Associate of the Institute of Financial Planning, holds the internationally recognised Investment Management Certificate, along with the UK Advanced Financial Planning Certificates ; G60 Pensions, G20 Personal Investment Planning and G10 Tax and Trusts.

UK Pension Planning - Presentation & Cocktail Reception The Government is introducing the most radical changes to pensions in almost a century. Understand the basic facts and how they might affect you.

Protein for the Ladies

37

By Aaron Tay

Fitness Instructor (SSC), Strength & Conditioning Coach (ASCA), Sports Nutrition Specialist (ISSN), Personal Trainer (NSCF) build those muscles back up again. The general guideline for an active individual’s intake of protein is about one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. For example, if you weigh 120 lbs, your daily protein intake requirement will be at least 120 grams, assuming if you are working out regularly. I know what you are thinking, “How am I going to consume THAT much protein?” SIMPLE ANSWER: Protein Powder What women think will happen to them if they start lifting weights

What actually happens

I often got asked by the ladies about taking protein powder and why protein is beneficial to them. Protein is not a beneficial item based on gender - protein benefits you no matter what gender you are!

When is the best time to take protein?

Ideally, you want to constantly take in a stream of protein throughout the day. My biggest tip for you is to aim for including protein at each and every meal. However, if you are clueless as to when to take your protein powder, the best times for that are: after your workout and at bedtime.

Your muscle tissues break down little by little each time you complete a workout. The muscle building takes place through proper recovery and refueling (nutrition). This is where protein plays a huge role.

“Protein at bedtime!? But I have been told to not eat past 7 pm!!”

With proper protein intake, amino acids come to the rescue of your damaged muscle, repairing those tissues so they grow back even stronger. The body doesn’t store amino acids, like it does for fats or carbohydrates. The body needs a daily supply of amino acids to make new protein.

It all depends on what you eat past 7 pm., first of all. Studies have shown that consuming a protein shake or high protein snack such as boiled eggs or cottage cheese with fruit at bedtime can help improve postexercise overnight recovery, not to mention, keep you away from wandering towards your fridge or pantry at night. Just don’t overdo it and eat moderately.

Women lack the hormones (such as testosterones) to bulk up like men do. So do not worry about that! Protein can benefit you, as a woman, more than you may realize. Not only it will help you tone up and build muscles, but it will ultimately aid your battle against the bulge. Here are some examples of the benefits:

Controls Appetite

It is no secret that proteins take longer to break down and digest, hence, it will keep you feeling full for a longer period of time. If you are finding yourself constantly starving throughout the day, maybe you should try increasing your protein intake to see if that helps keep hunger at bay.

Burns More Calories

Protein has the highest thermic effect of food (TEF), which is the amount of calories it takes your body to process and utilize a nutrient. Out of every 100 calories you get from protein, 25-30 are burned in the digestion process. Since your body expends more energy to process proteins than it does to digest carbohydrates and fats, individuals who consume more protein throughout the day might see faster fat-loss results than people on a lower-protein diet plan.

Aids Muscle Recovery

Heavy resistance exercise increases the rates of both protein synthesis and breakdown in muscle for at least 24 hours after a workout. Unless a protein-containing meal is consumed during recovery, breakdown will exceed synthesis, resulting in the loss of muscle mass.

Boosts Immunity

Research studies have shown that deficiency of high-quality protein can result in depletion of immune cells, inability of the body to make antibodies, and other immune-related problems. Protein is composed of the 20 amino acids your body needs for growth and repair, and some of these amino acids appear to be particularly important for immune functioning.

So, what are some good sources of protein?

Lean meats, Protein Powders, Eggs, Milk, Greek yogurt, Quinoa, Nuts, Beans, Soy, Tofu

“What if I am vegetarian or vegan?”

There are tons of other ways to get your protein in such as: Beans, Lentils, Spinach, Sprouted Grain Bread, Tempeh, Tofu, Nut Butter, Nuts, Pea Protein Powder, Hemp Protein Powder, Peanut Protein Powder Lastly, keep in mind that NOT all proteins are created equally. Some proteins will meet all of your needs while others won’t and because of this, there are two main types of protein: A complete protein contains an adequate amount of all of the essential amino acids that should be incorporated into a diet such as beef, poultry, fish, eggs, yogurt, and milk. An incomplete protein is any protein that lacks one or more essential amino acids in correct proportions such as grains, nuts, seeds, peas, and corn. Remember: Variety is key

So, how much protein do women need?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the standard food guide recommendation for the average individual is set around 46 grams per day for women and 65 grams per day for men. But, this is for an average person. If you are working out regularly and tearing those muscles down, your body will require more protein to SINGAPORE’S Hilltop Retreat

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith Golf Section AGM The formalities of the 2015 AGM were concluded in the Windsor Arms on January 24th and I’m really excited by the prospects for the Golf Section this year; team support, regular prizes and inclusive events for guests, junior golfers and families. We welcome to the committee Paul Nikkel, Richard Holloway, Kevin Gibson and David Christie who join Charles Pierron and Nic Merrow-Smith. We say a big thank you to Jonathan Woodward and David Kempton for their support and service as they move aside.

Our early risers gather at the first tee of the Plantation Course, Tanjong Puteri Golf Club.

Father & son outings are gaining popularity; Nic and Daniel (jnr.) Merrow-Smith with Paul and Mark (jnr.) Nikkel and Richard and Nicholas (jnr.) Holloway with Chris and Tom (jnr) Riley.

The first outing of the year and what a turnout! 25 golfers including 4 guests from the American Club, 4 juniors, and a total of 14 participating in the Section Medal. The Tanjong Puteri Plantation Course is set in a low lying area close to Pasir Gudang in Johor. It was an easy drive across the Causeway with everyone arriving safely and teeing off on time shortly after 8.00am. The weather was good and we enjoyed lunch and beer after the game before heading back around 2.30, reaching home at 5.00pm. On the day, honours went to John Bussell with 37 points ahead of David Kempton and Nic Merrow-Smith both with 36 points. Round of the day was conjured up by Richard Holloway with a gross score of 80, collecting a nearest the pin and longest drive along the way. Dave Kempton was also credited with our second nearest the pin. Embarrassingly, we had not prepared any prizes but we will have that sorted out by the time the next event takes place.

Our guest from the American Club; Ryan Jones, Aaron Warnke, Greg Chirieleleison and Tom Ramar.

NEWS, BOOZE (AND SHOES) By The Boaster

After a promising start and a “slow” (i.e. hopeless) middle, the COSMO season finished on a high. This was not just because of the spectacular win against SCC, reported here last month that was enough to pull us of the bottom of the league table and into a 6th place finish, but also the end-of-season banquet at the British Club. 120 squashers from the seven clubs assembled for a magnificent dinner and an evening of war stories, tales of glorious comebacks & unlikely victories, and plans for next season. Enormous credit is due to convener Craig Telmer for running the best COSMO in recent memory and organising a brilliant finale. Andrew Vine was the Master of Ceremonies that every club wishes they had. Fittingly while the BC didn’t take the COSMO Cup, they were awarded the ‘Spirit of Cosmo’ trophy by the other 6 clubs. Roll on the 2015 edition. The squash committee would like to remind ALL squash players that only proper squash shoes are allowed on the club courts. The wrong footwear can mark or damage the floors, which is at best discourteous and at worst dangerous for other players. This rule applies to regulars, infrequent players and to children. No squash shoes means no squash. A selection of shoes is available for hire from the pro shop for those without their own. The squash section are known for their competitive streak as well as their athleticism. As well as the box leagues, monthly handicaps and personal grudge matches/vendettas/blood feuds, “Jenny” Craig Telmer has now launched the Squash Section’s CNY Biggest Loser competition. A number of the section will be submitting themselves to an official weigh-in February (the same number will probably be gorging themselves on CNY treats and Tiger beforehand) and then attempting to get their body fat down from low to ridiculously low. Wolf-whistles and admiring commentary will be welcome as our squash gods pass through Scores, and if things go according to plan look out for a pull-out poster of the winner in the May edition of the magazine, along with details of the 2015 Squash Hunks calendar to be made available in the Windsor shop and upmarket bookshops island-wide.

Because the distance your ball can travel is longer on the diagonal and the net is lower in the middle at the point where a cross-court shot would pass. SWIMMING:

Section Report By Susan Finlay

Masters Christmas Social

Masters Saturday morning session

With Christmas and the New Year well out of the way, I discussed with our Masters swimmers how their goals for the New Year were going and asked them why and how they remain committed to swimming as a sport. Some of the swimmers often find it difficult due to work or family commitments to come as often as they would like, but one motivated & committed swimmer said “It doesn’t matter how many times a week I come, I always try and maintain a goal of doing up to 10km a week and no less than 7k’s.” Now that is commitment and not all of us can manage that. Coach Roland’s sessions are regularly around 2.5k, so if you do four sessions a week 10k is easy, it would just mean that if you only go 2 times a week you will have to swim more lengths and faster! For those of you who want help figuring out how much 2.5km is, I will do the maths for you. We swim in a 25 meter pool so 2 lengths is 50 and as you know 50x50 is 2500m. So that is 100 lengths. Roland sets us a different schedule each time. A 2.5km training set is broken into parts: a warm up set, a sprint or distance set and a warm down set. The sprint or distance set is always the section of the swim that all the swimmers require a little adrenalin to get them through. There is a feeling of slight nervous energy to this necessary evil as it is the sprint set where we push ourselves to improve our fitness levels, with the help of friendly competition/encouragement from your fellow swimmers and of course Coach Roland. If the person in the lane looks like he is racing you, it is probably because he is! The feeling of achievement, exhaustion and relief at the end of it all is met with almost the same feeling as soldiers returning from battle and there is a sense that we have braved and conquered this mentally and physically tough task. The camaraderie amongst swimmers no matter how big or small their personal goals are, are celebrated together. We usually use three to four lanes and have the privilege of only having to share with no more than 3 or 4 swimmers at a time, which for a swimming squad is unique. We are all at different levels of swimming but all manage to get through Roland’s constantly changing and challenging swim sets and all manage to get through the set within our own time frame. Roland is always there to keep pushing us through and making sure we achieve our goals and believe me it is never boring. I am often asked how do you not get bored when all you do is swim up and down looking at a black line at the bottom of the pool. If I compare swimming to yoga, it is quite similar because you set yourself a challenge and with determination and the use of your breathing you can achieve your goal. Swimming uses every muscle in the body, increases your fitness and strength and there is little or no risk of injury no matter how hard you push yourself. In the tropical climate of Singapore and with our beautiful pool and its surroundings, it really is the best sport. We have a great group of dedicated swimmers of all ages and experience. We have a number of husband and wife swimmers too. Some have swam all their lives to varing degrees and others are relatively new to the sport. We all have different goals for 2015 from open water swimming events to masters swimming international and national swimming competitions to just keeping fit and becoming a better swimmer. We all enjoy the social aspect and feel it is justified to share in a glass of wine or a coffee after training. We always welcome new comers and love to encourage others to join our group, we hope our enthusiasm is contagious. We always say, “You never regret a swim.” For more information on joining the masters, you can email swimming@britishclub.org.sg.

A Gem in Sabah, Malaysia By Johari For the staff’s Dinner & Dance’s lucky draw last year in October, YTL Resorts has generously sponsored the Club with a 3 days 2 nights stay at their Gaya Island Resort, situated off Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. The lucky winner was Johari, our valued staff of 17 years and counting who takes care of the daily deliveries of supplies to the Club and keeping the store well-managed. Along with his wife, he traveled to the resort in early January. Within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park off the coast of Kota Kinabalu in Borneo, Gaya Island Resort rests along the coast of Malohom Bay, a natural sanctuary nestled in the hillside of an ancient rainforest with a stunning outline of Mount Kinabalu on the horizon. The resort’s architecture respects Sabahan elements; its 120 villas and two-bedroom suite use local materials and blend harmoniously with the natural environment while villa interiors are designed with a contemporary elegance. In this feature, we check in with Johari for his review of this short but precious getaway..

Share with us your experience for the whole stay… On the first day, we participated in a guided nature walk and were fascinated by the amount of wildlife surrounding the resort. As my wife and I wanted a relaxing vacation and to make use of the time to catch up with each other, we kept our activities to a minimum. Basically, we spent the vacation enjoying delicious meals and beachside strolls. The highlight of our stay was the dinner served during our last night at the resort. We were pleasantly surprised when Land transfer is required from the airport. It took approximately 20 Head Chef Dolis cooked for us traditional Sabah styled dishes served minutes to reach the city; where we stayed overnight before our stay in the unique local way. at the resort. Their friendly colleagues assisted us with our luggage and welcomed us with very refreshing drinks. What are the travel plans required to reach Gaya Resort? While planning for the trip, I realized that there are very limited flight timings and booked ourselves on an Air Asia flight which flies direct from Singapore’s Changi Airport to Malaysia, Sabah’s Kota Kinabalu Airport. The flight took about 2 hours and 30 minutes per one-way. Before transferring to the island where the resort is located at, we have to pass by the city, Kota Kinabalu.

How far is your villa from the lobby? From the lobby to our villa, it is about 300 metres walking distance. As our luggage were taken care of by the staff, we took a relaxing stroll to the villa. Each villa consists of 4 units. During our stay, there was only one other unit occupied. The next villa is approximately 100m away from us. How is your villa? Our villa is spacious with a great view of the sea and fitted with luxurious and comfortable in-room amenities.
