Roger Harrold President

Dear Members,

July has been a rewarding month at the Club, particularly through the strong response to our family programmes during the school holidays.

Our Summer Kids Camp has been a standout success. Running from 6 th July to 7 th August, the five-week programme has offered children a varied mix of sports, games, creative workshops and interactive activities. The flexibility of daily and weekly enrolment has also enabled more families to participate throughout the holiday period.

I am also pleased to announce that the Main Committee approved investments end of June to extend the Club facilities above the current multi-level parking at the main building. The extension will provide a new area for the Club to extend its rackets sports to include Paddle and

additional sheltered parking for members vehicles. Seldom do we get the possibility to extend facilities and so we are very excited about this opportunity. Please see the details in this month’s edition.

In addition to this Members can now make use of the refurbished event facilities which emcompass the Elizabeth Suites. Here a fresh look, and new state of art video and audio capabilities make this space attractive to both private and business functions.

I would like to recognise our dedicated team for the care, planning and effort that have gone into delivering the holiday programme, as well as the time and effort to deliver milestone projects in the Club. I also thank all members for your active contributions and patience whilst we go through change at the Club.

With the school holidays ending, I hope the children who completed the holiday camps will leave with fond memories, new skills and friendships. To all returning families welcome back and look forward to seeing you around the Club.

A Month of Celebration, Progress and Club Spirit

Dear Members,

What a wonderful few weeks it has been around the Club, with so many members coming together to support their respective teams during the World Cup. There were certainly some very late nights and early mornings, but the atmosphere, friendly rivalry and shared excitement created memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you to everyone who joined us, cheered loudly and helped make the Club such a lively place to watch the action unfold.

In this edition, we are pleased to share several features on the Club’s development projects. These plans are bringing real excitement to the team, as each project is focused on improving our facilities and lifting the member experience. A great deal of work is taking place behind the scenes, and we cannot wait to see these projects move into full swing.

Our Events team also has a strong calendar ahead as we look to close out the year in style. This month, we are especially looking forward to celebrating Singapore’s 61st National Day. Our Club celebrations will take place in Verandah, and we look forward to seeing many of you there on the day as we mark this important occasion together.

CLUB MANAGEMENT

As we begin our new financial year on 1 st August 2026, I would also like to thank all our members for your contribution to the success of the year just passed. It has been a fantastic journey, shaped by your support, participation and feedback. We now look forward to building on that momentum in the year ahead, with continued progress, success and enjoyment for everyone at the Club.

Thank you, as always, for being such an important part of The British Club Singapore. I look forward to seeing you around the Club soon.

Thank You for Your Feedback on the Future of Mountbatten

Listening carefully, protecting our heritage, and shaping a practical new dining concept for members.

Dear Members,

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to share feedback on the future of Mountbatten. We have received thoughtful, constructive and wide-ranging comments, all of which reflect how much this space continues to mean to our members.

Your input is extremely valuable. Mountbatten has long held a special place within the Club, and we fully recognise the importance of protecting its character, heritage and sense of occasion. At the same time, we must ensure that the space works well for today’s members and remains practical, vibrant and sustainable for the future.

What We Have Heard

While views naturally differ, several clear themes have come through from members:

• A traditional full-service restaurant may not be the right long-term model on its own.

• Members would welcome special dining experiences, including wine dinners, chef collaboration and themed evenings.

• There is interest in a more flexible space that can work differently by day and evening.

• Some members would like a more adult, social lounge or bar style environment.

• There is support for retaining a quality food and beverage offer, with a stronger atmosphere and clearer identity.

• Members value the prestige and emotional connection of Mountbatten and want this protected.

• Operational sustainability, staffing and usage during quieter periods need to be carefully considered.

Our Commitment

Our aim is not simply to change Mountbatten for the sake of change. We are working towards a practical solution that retains the core values and heritage of the outlet, while creating an exciting new dining and social space that members will want to use more often.

That means listening carefully, testing what is realistic, and balancing member expectations with operational needs. The feedback already shared will help guide the next stage of planning, including the style of service, the type of food and beverage offer, the atmosphere of the space, and how Mountbatten can better support both everyday use and special Club occasions.

We are committed to developing a concept that feels true to the Club, respects the past, and brings fresh energy to the future of Mountbatten.

Thank you again for your honest and considered feedback. Your voice will remain an important part of shaping the next chapter for Mountbatten.

INCREASING OUR SPORTS PORTFOLIO

The Strategic Introduction of Padel and Multi-Purpose Facilities Tee Bale, General Manager

HISTORICAL STUDIES AND BACKGROUND

This is an artist’s impression.

• Over the past few years, Management and the Development Committee have extensively explored various opportunities and commissioned multiple feasibility studies to assess the viability of introducing padel facilities at the Club.

• Land use intensification was explored thoroughly with the relevant authorities but was ultimately not supported from a strict planning perspective.

• A detailed Hammerhead development study and concept evaluation revealed that extensive structural works and associated high costs rendered the option commercially unattractive.

• Investigations into a Sports Centre car park development were conducted from a structural perspective but were assessed to be unviable.

• Conversion of an existing tennis court into two padel courts was also closely assessed but was rejected because the proposal would significantly impact running racquet sports operations and member usage.

AN OPTIMIZED, PRACTICAL SOLUTION

Following the completion of these extensive assessments, the current proposal represents the only practical and feasible option identified to introduce a Padel or Multi-Purpose Court while balancing technical feasibility, authority considerations, and capital investment.

OUR VISION AND STRATEGY

• Adding padel ensures the Club remains highly competitive strategically, aligning with major global sports trends to secure long term relevance.

• Members will gain direct access to an affordable, high growth sport right on the Club grounds to enhance their health and recreational portfolios.

• The underlying infrastructure will provide members with highly practical, additional shaded car parking spaces to address an essential day to day need.

• The underlying platform offers exceptional long term operational flexibility, allowing the Club to smoothly repurpose the space if operational requirements change in the future.

COMPLETE SPORTS INTEGRATION

• We have structured this advancement to ensure zero impact on all running sports activities within our community.

• The tennis section fully retains its complete complement of courts, ensuring absolutely no disruption to current social play, coaching, or league tournaments.

• Our dedicated pickleball spaces are also completely safeguarded, leaving them entirely free from court reductions or new operational restrictions.

Celebrating our Club Stars

In June, we celebrated two outstanding team members as our Heart of the Club and Face of the Club award recipients, recognising their embodiment of the Club’s values and service spirit.

Our Heart of the Club, Teo Chee Hong, Accountant, was recognised for his dedication, professionalism and valuable contributions to the Club’s finance operations. His accuracy, reliability and attention to detail help ensure the Club’s financial processes run smoothly and efficiently.

Our Face of the Club, Pema Mok, Senior Service Assistant, was recognised for his professionalism, dedication and exceptional service. Pema helps to create memorable experiences for members and guests. His warm service and reliability contribute greatly to the smooth running of daily operations and the welcoming atmosphere of the Club.

Congratulations to Teo and Pema on this well-deserved recognition and thank you for your continued contributions to our vibrant Club community.

To round off the month, we celebrated our June staff birthdays with a gathering filled with laughter, cake and good company. It was a wonderful opportunity to recognise our colleagues and enjoy some quality time together as a team.

Warm Welcome to the BC Family

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Adelyn, Kher Hwai and Jia Ling, who have recently joined the Club as Senior Accounts Executive and Accounts Executives, respectively. We are delighted to have them on board and look forward to the experience, energy and expertise they will bring to our Finance team. While they may be harder to spot, as much of their work takes place behind the scenes, they play an important role in supporting the Club’s Finance team and ensuring that day-to-day accounting matters are handled smoothly and efficiently. Should you see them around the Club, do say hello and join us in wishing them every success in their new roles.

MEET YASMIN

For Yasmin, creating a positive member experience begins with a friendly smile and genuine care.

Yasmin first joined The British Club as a part-time receptionist in 2024 before transitioning into a full-time position in October 2025. She currently serves as an Assistant Member Relations Officer, welcoming members and guests while assisting them with their enquiries and needs.

What Yasmin enjoys most about her role is the opportunity to communicate with members and provide friendly, attentive service. She strives to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, build positive relationships and ensure that every member feels valued from the moment they arrive at the Club.

One particularly memorable experience demonstrated Yasmin’s calm and caring approach. After learning that a member had injured her head near the swimming pool, Yasmin immediately collected the first-aid kit and went to assist her. She comforted the member, helped her remain calm and ensured that she received the appropriate care.

For Yasmin, it is the personal connections between staff and members that make The British Club such a special place.

“It is not only about the facilities, but also about how members are greeted, remembered and made to feel valued,” she shares. “A friendly smile, knowing members by name, understanding their preferences and providing attentive service can create a true sense of belonging.”

She believes that the combination of a comfortable environment, strong member relationships and genuine hospitality is what sets the Club apart.

When it comes to dining at the Club, Yasmin’s favourite dish is the beef burger at Windsor Arms. She enjoys it as a classic comfort meal that offers a satisfying balance of flavour and quality ingredients.

Outside of work, Yasmin enjoys travelling to Malaysia to discover different foods, singing karaoke and spending time feeding stray cats. These activities allow her to relax, recharge and find happiness away from her daily responsibilities.

Throughout her career, Yasmin has been inspired by colleagues and others who have shown her the importance of maintaining a positive attitude and demonstrating genuine care when serving people. She has learnt that good service goes beyond completing tasks—it is about ensuring that members and guests feel welcomed, understood and valued.

“Small gestures such as listening, patience and kindness can create a lasting impression,” she says.

Her advice to anyone considering a career in hospitality is to always prioritise the needs of members and guests while remaining friendly, patient and willing to learn.

“A positive attitude and small, thoughtful gestures can make a big difference in creating a memorable experience for every member and guest.”

Give Your Belongings a Second Life: Charity Sale on 9th-10th August

Every object we own leads two lives. There is the one it spends with us, folded in a drawer, useful for a season and then quietly retired. And there is the one it could lead afterwards, in someone else’s hands, restored to purpose. Open any cupboard in any home and you will find the evidence. The ski jacket bought for one glorious week in Niseko, untouched since the flight home. The dive computer from that scuba certification in Bali, still set to the wrong time zone. We keep these things not because we need them, but because throwing them away feels like a small betrayal. And we are right to feel that. These objects still hold value. They are simply finished with us.

But there is another door, and it has been in front of us all along. It is the simple, ancient act of handing something on. Before there were supply chains, there were hand-me-downs. Before there was fast fashion, there was the sister’s dress taken in at the waist, the brother’s bicycle with the seat raised an inch. Passing things on is not a new idea dressed up in sustainability language. It is the oldest form of economy we have.

This August on the 9th and 10th, the British Club invites its members to remember together. Our Charity Sale is an exercise in the second life of things: a chance to release what we no longer need into circulation, and to find, among the offerings of our neighbours, something worth taking home. The premise is simple and quietly radical. Instead of throwing away, we hand over. Nothing at this sale will be new. Everything will come with a history, and leave with a future.

A Small Act of Circular Thinking

This wonderful concept of a “circular economy” is also a core United Nations Sustainable Development Goal focused on ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’. It suggests value is not created only when something is manufactured. It is created, and preserved, each time an object is used well. Multiplied across a membership the size of ours, that arithmetic starts to matter.

Two Ways to Take Part

The beauty of a charity sale is that it asks two things of you, and both are pleasurable. The first is to look around your home. Bring in anything that you do not need but could have a second life. The second is to come on the day. Browse, rummage, and find joy in a pre-loved item that speaks to you. Every dollar raised will be split between the British Club’s three adopted charities: Singapore Children’s Society; Riding for the Disabled Association of Singapore (RDA Singapore), and EQUAL.

Join the Committee

If any of this resonates, the British Club’s CSR and Sustainability Committee warmly welcomes new members. Our work supports local charities across Singapore and connects our community to the global UN Sustainable Development Goals. To get involved, please write to us at sustainabilitycommittee@britishclub.org.sg

BARRACUDAS

End-of-Season Summer Party

The Barracudas End-of-Season Summer Party was a fantastic celebration bringing together more than 100 swimmers and their families for an afternoon of pool games, food and drinks to mark the end of another successful season.

The event was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our young swimmers over the past six months and their parents on the sidelines. A heartfelt thank you goes to the team at Total Swimming and especially to our outstanding squad coaches, Julian and Pierre, whose enthusiasm, encouragement, and hard work have been instrumental in helping our team grow and succeed throughout the season.

As a special thank you, the Barracudas Section presented each swimmer with a personalised swim kit bag. We hope this small gift helps foster an even stronger sense of team spirit and connection within our growing junior swimming community at the British Club.

As your Convenors, we wish all our swimmers and their families a wonderful summer break. With the season drawing to a close, excitement is now building for the Barracudas End-of-Season Summer Pool Party on 19 th June. Swimmers and families are looking forward to celebrating another successful season together with pool games, dinner and plenty of fun in the sun. The event will provide a wonderful opportunity for swimmers to relax and enjoy time with their teammates, while parents can mingle and reflect on a season filled with hard work, progress and memorable achievements.

It will also be a chance to thank our coaches and families for their continued support. With a great atmosphere and strong British Club spirit, the Summer Pool Party promises to be the perfect way to celebrate the end of another fantastic Barracudas season.

PICKLEBALL

BC Bulldogs Host Singapore Swimming Club in Friendly

Pickleball Class

Congratulations to Michelle Cheong and Robert Liew for finishing first and second respectively in our inaugural Advanced Beginner Intraclub Pickleball Tournament, held on 20 th May.

It was a closely fought contest between the top two players, with both winning all of their matches. In the end, the title was decided by point differential, giving Michelle the narrow edge.

A total of 16 players took part in an intense and fast-paced round robin competition, expertly organised by committee members Aneetha Vine, Konal Sharma and Marina Krishnan. Throughout the afternoon, spectators and players alike were treated to an entertaining mix of dinks and speed-ups, lobs and smashes, and plenty of laughter.

Rounding out the top five were Midori Cannon, Kwee Lian Chong and Dr. Chi Way Chung, all of whom delivered excellent performances throughout the event.

The tournament concluded on a high note with drinks, pizza and chicken wings at Scores, giving everyone the opportunity to relax, socialise and celebrate a successful evening of pickleball. All in all, it was a memorable event for many of our developing players, who experienced the true essence of pickleball — a combination of competitive play, camaraderie and good fun. We now look forward to our next challenge as we take on Singapore Swimming Club on 28 th June.
