PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
Christmas seems so recent, yet we are already into the second quarter of the year. I hope the year is going well for all and the New Year’s resolutions have been fulfilled or are at least intact. March was a particularly busy month for the club. In addition to the normal matters, your management team and members of the Main Committee have been working hard on the development of a medium-term strategy. Around the club, we celebrated International Women’s Day, Mothering Sunday and St. Patrick’s Day. The club held its annual Masters’ Tennis Tournament, hosted a successful wine dinner featuring some interesting wines from New Zealand and also had the screening of the Six Nations Rugby matches. The latter event was only slightly marred by the early win for Ireland! Looking ahead, this magazine issue features three forthcoming Best of British 2018 events. We start with “An Evening with the Last Captain of The Royal Yacht Britannia” on Tuesday, 10 April. This will be followed, toward the end of April, by “Faulty Towers – The Dining Experience”, and, in May, “The Royal Wedding Street Party”. Do flip through the magazine or look online to find out more information about the events and book early as tickets are selling fast. You may notice, elsewhere in the magazine, that the composition of the various sub-committees has seen some changes. There has also been a minor “reshuffle” within the Main Committee members responsibilities. As we continue to develop our thinking on the strategy we may also change the scope of several of the committees. New members are always welcome to participate in sub-committees and I encourage anyone with capacity or relevant knowledge or skills to take the leap and let us know how you can contribute. I am pleased to note that many of our existing members have introduced their friends to the club. You are the best ambassadors for your club and there is no better reason to use the club than to relax with your friends. As a thank you, members whose friends sign up for club membership receive rewards points credited to their account. This month, there are magazine articles contributed by members of the various sports sections; Tennis, Squash, Cricket and Swimming. If you have an interest, would like to understand more or would like to join the various sections, do not hesitate to contact the respective convenors or the sports team and they will be happy to assist. You can find the contact details in the magazine. On behalf of the Club, we thank you for your continued support and wish everyone a great month ahead. DAMIAN R. GM’S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
This month, we kick off our 2018 “Best of British” Events at the Club. Much work have been going on behind the scenes with the concepts, sponsors, flight bookings, hotels, menus and entertainment so that we can deliver memorable experiences for you, our Members. Commodore Anthony Morrow CVO (The Last Capitan of the Royal Yacht Britannia) has kindly provided Chef Sunny with a typical menu which was previously enjoyed by Her Majesty whilst on board the Royal Yacht. After dinner we look forward to a talk featuring the many events he witnessed, which range from the early years of the Silver Jubilee to the historic handover in Hong Kong on 1 July 1997 as the Royal Yacht Britannia slipped out of Victoria Harbour and embarked upon its final, historic voyage across the South China Sea. On a lighter note later in the month, we promise chaos from Basil, Sybil and Manuel at Faulty Towers, the Dining Experience. Almost fully booked already at the time of print so do rush to book your seats. The Royal Wedding Street Party on 19 May is simply a must attend event for the whole family with lots of fun and game planned in the kids zone and Pimms for the parents. The menu is fantastic and we have kept the price extremely reasonable so the whole family can enjoy this historic event. Remember to stay on and join us later at Windsor Arms for the 2018 FA Cup final. TV crews will be in attendance so expect to see yourself on the local news. We are delighted that British Celebrity Chef Lesley Waters has agreed to join us in June to cook for Members at our Commonwealth Wine Gala Dinner on 8 June and will return on Sunday, 10 June for a unique cooking demonstration and lunch. We will be arranging a supervised children’s room so parents can relax and enjoy the lunch in comfort. Many of you will know Lesley from her television appearances over 12 years with Ainsley Harriott on the BBC’s Ready Steady Cook and This Morning on ITV. We will be having a special Champagne Brunch in celebration for the love of our lives – Mum. Treat your mum to a delightful buffet lunch with free-flow Piper Heidsieck Brut, house red and white wines. Early bird promotion is still available so book your seats now. Please flip through the magazine to find the local reciprocal Clubs feature that we have put together for you. This feature will serve to let you know more about the various Clubs and the conditions of use. Our reciprocal Clubs are excellent additions to your Membership so do take advantage of the benefits and offerings there. See you for a jam-packed few months at the Club. EIGHT TIPS TO HELP YOU PLAN FOR THE GREATEST GIFT:
EDUCATION By Ashley Jones, The Fry Group Singapore
It won’t surprise you to hear, planning for University fees is a topic that concerns clients. It can be and often is a key influence on financial plans. This is especially true for those who have lived overseas for a substantial period and face the potential reality of their children having international fee status. Here are some top tips we have gathered from a few conversations with clients over the years: 1. Plan and start early: This is unsurprisingly the first tip to success with most aspects of financial planning. If you have more time to save you will potentially not need to save as much at a time and investment risk has time to even out. 2. Involve the Grandparents: In our experience Grandparents love helping their Grandchildren with the added benefit ‘genuine’ gifts can reduce potential exposure Inheritance Tax. 3. Pay tuition fees upfront: This isn’t always possible but it is worthwhile enquiring as you reduce exposure to future cost increases. 4. Understand the tax implications: There is little point having a great plan when you end up paying high levels of tax. Seek professional advice for the relevant tax jurisdictions and request guidance from a professional who can help you navigate the different nuances. 5.
Invest prudently: The market is awash with complex investments purporting to meet your “University fee based objectives”. In reality it doesn’t need to be complex. A simple investment account with no exit costs is likely to be the most appropriate option if you are comfortable with investment risk. Illiquid, high-cost investments are unsuitable and should be avoided. They will only reduce the prospect of meeting objectives with the added downside of penalties if your plans change and you need to access capital sooner than expected.
6. Consider bursaries, scholarships and alternative support: This is an extensive area of advice which varies from region to region. For example, Welsh students may be able to access funding from the Welsh Government which will help to reduce their fees. 7. Utilise tuition fee and maintenance loans: These are not free sums of money and will need to be repaid but can be a cost effective option. 8.
Keep evidence of your connections with the UK: If your child (and we assume you) has lived overseas for some time, there is no guarantee of securing home fee status in a UK university. There are no hard and fast rules and each university is left to make their own decision but if you have maintained ties with the UK, providing evidence of this could be key i.e. frequent family trips to the UK each year (flight tickets), National Insurance Number, UK provisional driving license and a family home in the UK amongst other points will support your child’s claim.
If you start planning early, and you have a clearly defined investment approach, it’s easy to track how you are doing. While the cost of university education can feel like a moving target, having a clear idea of your number, and regularly reviewing how your plans are performing will help to keep you on track. Whilst planning for University fee’s can seem a daunting task, remember that giving the gift of education is priceless, and investing time planning for it may be the best investment you ever make.

1) How did you hear of The British Club, and what made you join the Club?
HARI VIJAYARAJAN family and his
I had some friends who were Members of the Club and received great reviews from them about the food, sports (squash/tennis) and kids facilities. I also brought my daughter for some soccer classes at Tinytots on some Sundays and was impressed by the landscaping and lush green surroundings of the Club, further tempting me to become a Member! I love playing tennis and squash and will be looking for partners once I get actively involved playing from April. We are moving into our new home in Upper Bukit Timah later this year and find the proximity of a 10 minutes’ drive to the Club appealing! 2) Tell us more about your line of work and what makes it interesting. I am in charge of building the brands and retail footprint of Lazada Singapore, working directly with hundreds of brands like Apple, Samsung, Bose, JBL, Microsoft, Razer, L’Oreal, Estee Lauder, P&G, Unilever, Philips, Bosch, Puma, etc and retailers like Watsons. I also run the buying P&L for Lazada Singapore and my team is responsible for ensuring the world’s largest official assortment directly from brands and large retailers are available on Lazada Singapore at the best prices with fast shipping options for an amazing customer experience. I get to work with some of the smartest minds in eCommerce in the world, learn a lot from Alibaba’s expertise, interact with amazing teams from the world’s largest brands, and coach and develop a team of rising stars and build the next leadership team at Lazada Singapore. 3) Where can we always find you at the Club?
For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature Hari Vijayarajan and his family. Hari joined the Club in February 2018. He is currently working as Executive Vice President & Chief Business Officer at Lazada Singapore. We find out a bit more about Hari and his interesting profession in this interview.
By the kid’s pool, terrace for lunch on Sundays, kids Club or maybe even at the tennis or squash courts. 4) Tell us some of the more interesting and unusual items Lazada carry. Lazada has hundreds of millions of SKUs available to purchase today and is the #1 eCommerce platform in South East Asia. I think Taobao Collection, a selection of curated assortment from China’s leading online Marketplace (Taobao) offers an array of millions of unique products that customers typically won’t find in retail stores in Singapore and to me is interesting and unusual (especially in home, beauty tools, fashion, sports, travel and electronics accessories categories). Moreover, our huge focus in working with the world’s best brands across categories, will also give customers confidence and peace of mind when they buy from Lazada’s Official Stores.

STAFF IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Karen is the Senior Member Relations Executive at The British Club. Most popular with kids (and adults) with a sweet tooth, she has just taken up a new role of Senior Member Relations Executive at the Club. Growing up, Karen has always found that she liked meeting and interacting with people and this had a direct influence on her working career. Karen started off at Citibank NA as a Customer Service Assistant but subsequently decided she wanted to dabble in sales. That’s when she joined an optical chain store as an Optician and stayed for 11 long years. After many years working at the front line, she decided that she needed a career change. Karen joined a Japanese MNC as a Human Resource Executive and slowly worked her way up throughout her 8 years there. In 2014, she decided to leave the corporate world so

she could spend more time with her elderly parents and 2 growing boys. Karen found The British Club through a mutual friend and started her journey here as a Captain at Verandah CafĂŠ. Owing to her excellent service, Karen was then promoted to be the Senior Retail Executive at Windsor Shop. Working at the shop provided many opportunities for her to interact and she got to know many Members of the Club, some even a little too well! This eventually led her to her latest role of Senior Member Relations Executive at the Club. Throughout the years at the Club, Karen rediscovered her love for meeting and interacting with people. This is shown evidently through her excellent service towards Members and guest of the Club. Do approach the reception and look for the biggest smile the next time you need help and Karen will be happy to assist!

Just kidding! 2) Who is your favorite celebrity? I have a thing for bald men so I am going to say Jason Statham. 3) What super hero ability would you choose, limited to one. I would choose to have psychic abilities so I can read thoughts and move mountains with my mind! Oops, is that two abilities already? 4) Are you a messy or a neat person? I am a hybrid; neat at work but my room is a totally different story. 5) Tell us a food item that you’ll never get close to. Vegetables, especially Brussel Sprouts. 6) What movie can you watch over and over without ever getting tired of? The Green Mile and I always cry watching it. 7) Where can we always find you at the Club? I am currently situated at the Reception but don’t be surprised when I pop out from anywhere to greet you! 8) Favorite Member at the Club? ALL Members are my favorite! 9) What’s the most ridiculous thing you have bought? It has to be a Cook Book as I can’t cook to save my life! 10) What is your favorite item from Windsor Shop? Galaxy Chocolates!!!!! 11) What is your greatest strength and weakness? I would like to think that my biggest strength is my people skills and my weakness is that I am actually a big softie on the inside. 12) Nicest thing a Member has said or done to you? Where do I begin? Just one of the many… A little girl, Ava , came up to me on Valentine’s Day and gave me 2 heart-shaped cookies and said “I LOVE YOU MS KAREN!”. 13) What will be your ideal way to spend the weekend? Relaxing at home with family of course but I won’t complain about a trip to Maldives either! 14) What inspires you to be better? Life is a never ending learning journey and I always strive to be better than I was yesterday, and that will be my goal moving forward.

DiGiorgio Family Wine & Gourmet Dinner Fri, 27 Apr • Mountbatten Bar and Grill $98+ Member • $108+ Guest On Friday, 15 March 2002, Stefano DiGiorgio and the family celebrated quietly when a dream came true. On this date, the family became the proud owners of the second oldest winery in Coonawarra, South Australia. The winery had been known since the early 1950s as Rouge Homme and holds enormous importance within the winescape of Australia. Rouge Homme is, of course, is Redman translated to French, and it was this name which was applied to the very first release of 1951 Cabernet Sauvignon. The Redman family had actually owned this property since 1908, and held it through until its eventual sale to Southcorp Wines Ltd in 1965. The winery is renowned for the production of Jimmy Watson Trophy winning wines and has received numerous other awards for its wines The purchase by the DiGiorgio family of the winery and surrounding vineyards ensured that the winery was in terrific condition and contained state of the art technology, whilst retaining the historic elements of the building. These include the traditional open fermenters and underground cellar that was the original cellar door of the Redman family. Being the second oldest winery in the district, the aged vines surrounding the winery are planted on the famous terra rossa soil located in the heart of Coonawarra. This has provided the DiGiorgio family with a wonderful source of premium fruit, a state of the art production facility and a centrally located cellar door in Coonawarra. We are happy to have Frank DiGiorgio with us this April. Frank is the public face of DiGiorgio Family wines, and the driving force behind day to day operations of the winery and vineyards. In addition to managing the family farming operation, vineyards and winery, Frank has been instrumental in the establishment of DiGiorgio Family Wines’ domestic and international distributor network, and has worked tirelessly to promote the family business on the Limestone Coast, across Australia and around the world.

SPORTS & FITNESS TENNIS:
TENNIS SECTION REPORT by Liza Rowan 2018 witnessed the tennis section taking off to a smashing start with coaching programs, tournaments, ladders and socials well underway for our youngsters, ladies and gents alike, along with many teams competing in nation wide tournaments at all levels.
U12B Smash Team
Firstly our youth; 4 teams participated in SMASH over the first few months of the year, and we now have 6 teams competing in Lacoste JTTL – Singapore’s international league for U10-U17 players. On the coaching side, 2018 brought the introduction of a ‘Passport’ system for our younger players, especially those new to the game. Players as young as 4 years start on red balls, progressing to orange, then green; progress is stamped by the coaches on personalized passports which the kids bring along to each coaching session – proving to be a great incentive for players to improve and focus on their game, while parents can visibly understand skills acquired and those still to be learned before the kids progress. Ladies’ tennis continues to thrive within the club offering social, competitive and fitness opportunities to both new and long term players. 5 teams represent the British Club in WITS (Women’s International Tennis Society) at various levels of play, while our ladies continue to enjoy team and group coaching, weekly socials and our internal laddies’ ladder.
Ladies Ladder Lunch
Equally, the tennis section offers our gents coaching opportunities in the evenings during the week and at weekends, and many participate in the men’s ladder which (as well as the ladies) is set up to be flexible to suit your availability to play, and it can be joined at any time during the year. And if all this isn’t enough, we are in the throws of our Masters Tournament (over 50s) at the time of writing, and will soon commence our Tennis Open – players of all levels and experience are welcome and if you lose your first match, fear not – you move forward to the plate! There are cups, plates and medals for singles, doubles and mixed doubles players - so lots of opportunity to enjoy friendly (most of the time ;-) ) competitive play with other club members.
Kids Lesson
Whatever your level of play, and whether you are a new or long term member of the club, we welcome you to have a hit at any of our social events, and of course would love you to join in any of our competitive play – be that by joining a team, or participating in one of the tournaments. For more details you can email me at liza@lizarowan.com or contact any of the staff at the ProShop.

SQUASH:
YOUNG PUPS, OLD DOGS, NEW TRICKS By Craig Telmer & The Boaster
New tricks
Go back a few years and the squash section’s idea of a youth movement was the small number of members who didn’t qualify for the over 45s knock-out. Things are very different now. A dozen children from a nearby school are in the middle of a 16-week introduction to squash programme on Wednesday afternoons at the club, also known as “better than playing games on your phone”. If you have kids (and especially if they have mobile phones) please do register them for the course through the Sports Office. The youngsters are not the only ones improving themselves. Adult members of all talent levels have turned the old dogs/new tricks saying around and are taking skills improvement lessons. Squash coaches that can be seen around the British Club include: Vivian and Govindan Rhamanan, Robson Yeoh, Dermadi and Zainal Abidin. If you “used to play squash when you were young” . . . there is help to get you back in to shape and back in to the game.
Committee meeting
Old dogs
The old dogs do more than play, though. The squash section has the largest committee of any sports section in the British Club, reflecting the spirit and willingness to get involved of all our members. In order of beer-drinking capacity they are: Craig Telmer, Andrew Vine, Andy Greenaway, Jamie Salamon, Andrew Marshall, Nick Fell, Damian Glendinning, Ben Kiggell, Keith Carpenter, Liam Douglas, Ragnar Bulie, James Bauly. Thank you all.

CRICKET:
CRICKET SECTION REPORT By Krishna Persaud
The British Club Cricket section wrapped up the first month of fixtures with a match against Cargill, which was also the first of three matches on the year for the Dsouza Cup. The team finished with a 1-2 record on the month with the apparent rust of the holiday season taking some time to fully dust off. A few highlights from the month of February in terms of batting were 1) Paul “Spac” McNee with 64 runs in 3 matches and an average of 64, 2) Todd “Bucky” Buck with 53 runs in 3 matches and an average of 26.5, and 3) Nick “Coco” Power with 53 run in 3 matches and an average of 26.5. On the bowling side of things we see some names similar to the batting 1) Spac taking charge with 5 wickets with a 6.85 econ, 2) Coco taking 4 wickets with a 4.53 econ and 3) Rohan Persaud taking 3 wickets with a 6.25 econ. “The first month of fixtures has eased us into the new season”, says new skipper David “Benno” Bennett. The month ended with Skipper Bennett hoisting the Dsouza Cup, which he described as, “A convincing win against Cargill”. It is an exciting time for the Cricket section as the start of 2018 has set a new standard for member participation with the team averaging over 90% of players in matches being members. We are happy to welcome any new players no matter your level of cricket ability, so please feel free to come down to Turf City on Saturday around 1 to see what we are about. A new feature exclusively announced in the British Club magazine will be MVP of the Month. Our inaugural MVP for the Month of February is none other than Paul “Spac” McNee, huge performances with both bat and ball helped to earn Spac this award, but what can’t go unnoticed is his leadership on the field and encouraging bowlers no matter the situation. Please feel free to follow British Club Cricket on Twitter at @BCCricketSG to keep up-to-date with live in match stats and updates.

In February the British Club hosted the Merlion League 1, our British Club Barracudas taking on The Tanglin Club, The American Club, Marsden Swim School and Warren Golf and Country Club. A total of 57 British Club Barracudas were swimming. It was a fabulous demonstration of competitive swimming and great team spirit. Our Barracudas brought home a total of 56 medals, 26 GOLD, 17 SILVER and 13 BRONZE. A pretty impressive tally!
