and I then set out ourselves to do the fit out, installation, painting and renovation of the business, all in two weeks! It was hard work, but completely and totally satisfying for us both. We are proud of what we have achieved!”

Q: “Who or what influenced you in your life and inspired you to achieve?”

Courtney Morris: “I was born with an ability to manifest, stemming from a healthy self image and an inner power within. My mother often said: “You always land on your feet” which instilled in me that independent and confident belief system. So from the outset, if I want something I’d go get it. My grandmother often says I am a ‘go-getter’.

Having been bullied during my school years, I learned that others opinions don’t define me”.

This week I had the opportunity to interview Courtney Morris, young entrepreneur and Bribie Islander. I have heard her name associated with the term ‘entrepreneur’ often, so of course I was curious to speak with her. I was interested in hearing about her goals as a business woman, her motivation behind her energy and her thoughts on creating a successful small business. I feel she can offer us an insight into not only women in business, but also YOUNG women in business.

Q: “What lead you to your chosen fields -Beauty and Pilates?”

Courtney Morris: “I started with a Beauty Therapy Certificate 4 course at 17 following my mother’s footsteps into the industry.

I then went on to University to study a Bachelor of Communications. Following

that, I went to Montreal, Canada for a year and a half to live. During that time, I was contacted by my childhood sweetheart from years before and after much communication over a period of months, I decided to return home to Australia. We are now engaged with a 4 year old daughter. Following her birth, it was beneficial for me to go into beauty therapy, opening my own business from home which allowed me to spend time with my daughter. After running the business from home for two years, and having failed to find a Pilates class on the island, I saw the opportunity to create one, I had enjoyed the benefits of Pilates classes myself for ten years and felt the need to offer those benefits to the community.

I found a suitable venue, where I could combine both business facets of Beauty and Pilates, at Banksia Beach. My fiancée

Q: “What key advice would you offer young women with an interest in business?”

Courtney Morris: “If you’re passionate about something you will make it happen. Passion starts as a dream and turns into reality. I am constantly expanding my education with new courses to compliment my existing business. I returned to study to complete my Diploma in Beauty Therapy, and went on to study my Pilates Instruction Course.”

Q: “What is your personal motto or affirmation you use for motivation?”

Courtney Morris: “ I keep a dream board.

I have personal and business goals that I wish to achieve by the time I am 30. When I reach 30, I will set new goals and so on and so forth.”

My business motto is “Innovation meets Beauty”.

Q: “In your opinion, what are the key factors that make a business successful?”

Courtney Morris: “Quality and personalised customer service is paramount, particularly in Beauty and Pilates. The relationship with the client is intimate and personal and requires trust and integrity. Professionalism and the manner in which you conduct yourself as a person, is what keeps your clients loyal to you. Knowing how to relate to people and understanding a client’s individual needs is important too, the desired effect is that your client leaves feeling gratified, both with the service and the product.

Q: “What are your goals for the future, near and distant?”

Courtney Morris: “Travelling by the time I’m 30 is high on the list. To expand the business and add new employees to our team here at Bribie Island Pilates and Beauty is my goal too.”

Q: “What products and services do you provide to your clients?”

Courtney Morris: ”I am the only salon to offer ‘Sugaring’, which is a gentle , more effective form of hair removal than waxing.

If it is the appropriate treatment for a spastic diplegic child in Australia, SRD surgery can be done in Melbourne though it is still a very costly procedure.

Some Australian families take their children to the same hospital that Elizabeth will go to for her surgery, St Louis Children’s Hospital, Missouri.

Sometimes life changes in what seems extraordinary ways. My mother summed this up with her favourite pun, ‘Life takes funny turns’.

During my sailing years, I did not expect to become a writer or to sell my book about circumnavigating the world to raise funds for my granddaughter’s surgery. Nor did I ever expect to live on lovely Bribie Island.

Despite being a physiotherapist for so many years, I had a lot to learn about being grandmother to my cerebral palsied granddaughter Elizabeth. It brought home to me how much the whole family is affected by disability, how the life of each and every one is changed, some subtly, some drastically. It reaffirmed and strengthened family bonds, and we have all pulled hard to get the best for this brave little girl.

Elizabeth, who lives in New Plymouth, New Zealand, is to have surgery in August at St Louis Children’s Hospital, Missouri, U.S.A., to remove spasm from her lower limbs, allowing her to walk independently. At three and a half, she is able to walk on certain surfaces with a frame that prevents her legs from scissoring, but usually uses a wheelchair or crawls. The surgery is called selective dorsal rhizotomy, or SDR, and is not offered in New Zealand. Each family (about ten of them this year) has to find more than NZ$100,000 to fund the operation, subsequent specialist physiotherapy and travel. Almost all these young parents have done this through crowd funding, and Elizabeth’s parents set up a Givealittle campaign, http://givealittle.co.nz/donate/cause/ legsforelizabubble

Apart from using my physio skills after her return, I am donating all funds from my first book to Elizabeth’s Givealittle fund. I encourage everyone interested in the story to come along and get a personalised copy, perhaps with information and tips on writing your memoir, family history or autobiography.

Together with my family, I completed a circumnavigation on a 40ft cutter rigged ketch a few years ‘BC’ – before computers. We had a depth sounder and a sextant; that was about it. My book, More Than A Thousand Dawns, recounts the story, through anecdote, vignette and comic episode, of our four and a half year odyssey. Louis, then in his early teens and now Elizabeth’s dad, was the hero of it all, so it is doubly appropriate to use the proceeds from this book to help fund her surgery.

My hope is that one day, when Elizabeth can walk independently and perhaps even run, ride a bike or sail a boat, she too can have adventures like her dad’s.

Anne will be signing books at the Banksia Beach Golf and Country Club on Saturday July 16 between 11am and 3pm.

The Moreton Bay Marine Park is one of the most important habitat’s in Australia for the conservation of shorebirds. Shorebirds must rest and feed as even the slightest disturbance causes them to burn vital energy. Therefore, the Moreton Bay Marine Park designated Kakadu Beach on Banksia Beach Esplanade as a Wader Bird Roost Interpretive Centre and secured the area from outside disturbances as it is considered a Critical High Tide Roost. The Kakadu Beach Wader Bird Roost was built to replace the roost located at Dux Creek as it was lost during the development of the Pacific Harbour estate.

The Critical High Tide Roost is a key location that has been modified to provide a safe haven for the shorebird population to breed, rest and feed, without fear of being ousted by people, dogs, or extreme high tides as they would in other parts of the Pumicestone Passage, such as Toorbul where the roost is inundated by 30% of high tides. Further roosts are located at Donnybrook, Buckley’s Hole, Poverty Creek, Mission Point, Lime Pocket, Godwin Beach and areas that are situated deep within the passage.

sheltered by a landmass which forms a shield to protect them from the ruthless battering of waves. Bribie Island is that shield, as the western shoreline receives the sediments and nutrients carried down the creeks from the mainland catchment.

The sediments and nutrients settle near the creek-mouth and form intertidal banks with a soft and muddy texture. These intertidal banks form the smorgasbord for shorebirds attracting crustaceans, molluscs and other invertebrates. However, as the tide rises they are forced to retreat to higher ground until the tide recedes once again and they can resume feeding. Shorebirds lives are governed around the tides, unlike most other animals, which is unusual as most animals of common knowledge are governed by day or night.

For the roost to be successful it is imperative that should we be in the area we a) minimise our noise and observe from a distance, b) keep our dogs away from the foreshore as they frighten the birds and are not permitted, c) reduce our speed if we are in a vehicle or boat while maintaining a distance well away from the flocks and d) avoid driving on the fore dunes as this is where our resident birds nest.

We are very lucky in Moreton Bay to have many species of shorebirds in the area, especially in summer when numbers can swell up to 50,000 as they all converge after travelling anywhere between 25,000 – 60,000km non-stop. There are 16 residential species including the Pied Oystercatcher, Bar-tailed Godwit, Eastern Curlew, Redcapped Plover, Grey-tailed Tattler, Rednecked Stint, Greater Sand Plover, Curlew Sandpiper, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Pacific Golden Plover, Whimbrel, Lesser Sand Plover, Sooty Oystercatcher, Caspian Tern, Crested Tern and the Black-Winged Stilt.

Each of these species has their own unique qualities which define them, as do we, but we all have one thing in common…

We all love our Bribie Island. So let’s love the animals of Bribie Island twice as much.

Mind Your Manners!

I have recently heard many complaints from community members regarding individuals with a lack of basic manners.

For example, men being abusive to women in car parks, women showing judgment to other women in relation to children’s tantrums in shopping centres, and teenagers using profanity in public places! Don’t even get me started on road rage! On one occasion, I was travelling as a passenger in a vehicle along the foreshore with the driver doing the 50km/ hour speed limit, when the vehicle behind us began flashing it’s lights and honking it’s horn at us, presumably because we were in some way preventing them from speeding! Shortly after, we were abused by the driver when they pulled up beside us at the lights. Very recently, I ordered and purchased an expensive item from a store which I was unable to fit into my car so I sent my son with his trailer to pick it up and he was received by the employee with rudeness and vowed never to purchase anything there again! Then there’s my biggest pet hate, rubbish being left at parks, waterways and beaches! Whenever I frequent these places I return with a full boot of other people’s trash.

It seems to me that this current society shows a perspective of ‘every man for himself’ rather than a positive attitude towards community in general, and individuals who reside among us. Maybe it’s time to go back to basics? You may accuse me of being ‘old school’ but I’m ok with that! The days of ‘please’ and ‘thank you”, of table manners, of politeness and common courtesy may be gone ….but that doesn’t mean the world has improved any as a result!

I was one day waiting in my vehicle outside a shopping centre exit, parked, and I witnessed a disabled man on a mobility scooter who had dropped a 12 pack of toilet rolls to the ground from the carrier at the back of his scooter. He was there trying to go around in circles to line his reach up to them so he could pick them up. Meanwhile I counted at least ten people at a close vicinity to him, who walked straight past him oblivious to his

Common to Bribie Island but very hard to spot are the Tawny Frogmouths. The reason for their almost invisibility is a clever camouflage. Their colouring is similar to that of a tree branch and a habit of sitting perfectly still with eyes closed gives them the appearance of a broken branch.

Quite often Tawny Frogmouths are mistaken for owls as their appearance is similar. They are not owls, but are more closely related to the nightjar family. Their feet do not have the strong talons of the owl so they are not able to seize food with their claws. They catch their prey with their frog like beaks. Their tongues are long and fork-like. The whisker-like feathers near the beaks assist when taking their prey.

Tawny Frogmouths are nocturnal carnivores and during the day perch in trees. Using their excellent sight and hearing abilities they hunt for food mostly after dusk and again before dawn by sitting on a low branch or fence waiting for their prey to come along. They then swoop to the ground for the kill. Unlike owls they are not strong fliers so the majority of their food is captured in this way. Insects, worms, slugs and snails make up most of their dietary needs but they will also pounce on mice, frogs and small reptiles. Sometimes insects, particularly moths, are captured while in flight.

They can fly rapidly over short distances.

Because they are weak fliers they often become the victims of motor vehicles in the night. The use of pesticides also claims the lives of many frogmouths. This happens when they eat insects or mice which have been poisoned.

Cats, dogs, pythons and foxes also pose a threat.

The male is on duty during the day and at night both birds take turns. After about 30 days the baby birds hatch and remain in the nest for a further 25 days.

Sometimes the fledglings will leave the nest before they can fly and are found on the ground. If not in danger from predators these young birds should be left alone. Usually the parent birds are nearby and will look after them, teaching them to fly and feed themselves. If the chick is still white and fluffy it may have fallen from the nest and in this case should be rescued as it is too young to fend for itself.

Injured birds need to be taken to a wild life carer or hospital as soon as possible.

Tawny Frogmouths weigh about 680 grams and are about 35-50 cm in length with a life span of up to 10 years. Usually the colouring is silvergrey but sometimes there is a rufous tint to the feathers. Their call sounds a little like a drum beat. They are territorial and live within an area of about 20-80 hectares.

In Australia there are 3 species of frogmouths and 15 species world wide. Tawny Frogmouths are found all over Australia while the Papuan and Marble Frogmouths are mostly in the North.

The Marble Frogmouth is also found near the Queensland and NSW borders.

Conservation status is secure.

LONGMAN SENIORS AWARD TO VMRBI’S PETER RAYMONT

VMR’s Coxswain Peter Raymont received his Longman Senior Volunteer Achievement Award from Federal Longman MP and Assistant Minister for Innovation Wyatt Roy. Peter Raymont received the National Medal with Clasp for 25 years meritorious service. As an inaugural member from 1976, Peter has seen all the various forms of the organisation from Air Sea Rescue to the current Volunteer Marine Rescue structure.

He has skippered all 9 rescue boats which have been operated by the VMR since its beginning. He was also responsible for the initial drawing of plans

for the building which is now the VMR Base and later designed and drew up the plans for the VMR jetty and pontoon.

For a decade in the eighties Peter trained all VMR members and the public in navigation, and in 2004 became a Commercial Launch Master himself.

This qualification was later converted to a Commercial Coxswain ticket. He was a key member in two boat replacement committees. He was awarded Honorary Life Membership of VMR Bribie Island in 2001. Peter recalls that in the beginning ‘there was no clubhouse or rescue vessel. Members used their own boats to assist fellow boaties and a radio watch operated from a hut at the boat ramp’.

With Winter upon us, many people have chucked in the towel when it comes to enjoying their pool. But does your investment really need to be left feeling unwanted throughout the “cooler” months? is it possible to enjoy a warm swimming pool all year or at least for much of the year at an affordable cost?

Well the answer is Yes! in this day and age, the affordability and efficiency of pool heating has improved significantly.... to the point where many people now are including heating as an automatic part of their project or are taking the opportunity to up-grade their pool and lifestyle by heating their existing pool.

So let’s take a look at the options:

First is the humble Solar Blanket. this is plastic blanket that looks like bubble wrap which spreads out and floats on the surface of the pool. now one of the things a pool blanket is good for is heat retention. in other words, when the nights are cold, rather than allowing all of the days gained warmth to escape throughout the night, the blanket helps to retain a lot of the existing warmth and therefore maintain its temperature.

During the day, a blanket is very efficient in summer when the sun is out and the days are long and hot. But this often when you don’t actually want much heating and a blanket can actually be a nuisance - it makes the pool too hot and the heat is difficult to control. During the cooler & colder months when you’re looking for a bit of extra heat, a blanket is really only good for increasing the ambient water temperature by around 2 to 3 degrees and then helping to hold it there - by retention. So in the colder months, that’s really not good enough.

And in winter it doesn’t do anything to warm the pool. But a blanket is a great aid to other forms of heating again because of retention. there are a number of different qualities, grades and thicknesses in pool blankets. Australian made blankets will usually have much better UV stabilisers than some of the cheap Chinese imports and offer better warranties accordingly. So when purchasing a pool blanket, make sure you are aware of the differences.

Second on the list is Solar heating -

whereby a mat or “collector” is mounted on the roof of your home (or shed) and your pool water passes through the mat via a pump. the water in turn is warmed via energy (heat) being transferred through the mat as the water passes through. this process should be controlled by a thermostat system which can turn the pump on to heat the water to the desired temperature (as long as the conditions are favourable) and turn it off when the sun goes down or the conditions are not favourable.

You’ll note that i mentioned conditions being favourable. Solar heating is an extremely efficient and cost effective way to heat your pool. there are a couple of “issues” with solar heating however. the sun and available heat is not necessarily always conducive to providing the right levels of heat to take your pool to the temperature that you want it - particularly in winter. So it’s unlikely that solar heating will provide all year round swimming, (unless you don’t mind swimming in a chilly pool in May, June, July & August). it can also lose its efficiency when there is a continuous run of cool, cloudy or rainy weather. So occasionally you may lose the efficiency of your solar heating even in a month when you normally would be enjoying the benefits of warm water.

Another issue today is “roof space” With more and more homes taking advantage of roof space for other energy use such as solar electricity and solar hot water systems for the home, there just isn’t the available or ‘right’ space on the roof anymore. Which leads me to the correct roof placement - the north facing roof. if you can’t use a north facing roof, or there just isn’t enough roof available, then east is second choice. West is next. ....

And South?? Well only if you really really want solar and there is just no other option. But efficiency will be extremely low.

So what are the other heating options? next month we’ll take a look at Gas and heat Pumps and see why heat pumps have become one of the most efficient and preferred forms of all year heating.

Not all offerings at U3A are weekly classes.

Some special interest subjects are presented on a one off “INSIGHT” basis to spark possible interest for an ongoing group.

Bribie Island U3A was one of 35 different U3As throughout Queensland represented at a recent State Conference held at Sunshine Coast University.

It was celebrating 30 years of U3A growth throughout Queensland ,with plans to expand to many new locations around the State.

The concept of “Learning for Fun” continues to attract more and more people as they retire. Bribie Island now has over 1200 “Senior” students attending over 100 classes each week.

There is something for everyone’s interest, and next Term there are some new and very different experiences are on offer.

Enrolment for term 3 classes will be held at the U3A Centre on Wednesday 6th July between 9am and 11, and classes resume after the holiday break on Monday 11th July and run until 16th September.

A Timetable of all classes can be picked up at the Bribie Island Library or Visitor Info Centre, and new Term 3 classes will include more Language and Art opportunities.

In addition to existing classes at various levels of French, German, Italian and Spanish there will be a new Class in “INDONESIAN FOR BEGGINERS” held on Tuesdays between 11am and 1230pm.

With 10 current and very popular Art classes for Oils, Acrylics, Watercolour, mixed media and Pencil drawing, a new group “CREATING ALTERNATIVE ART” will be conducted on Fridays between 12;30 and 3 pm.

This will develop new skills with water based mediums and making use of alternative techniques.

To exercise your mind and memory you could join a new group having fun with TRIVIA QUESTIONS on Mondays between 11am and 12;30.

Death comes to all of us eventually, and the importance and clarity of your personal wishes after you die are critical to those left behind. An Insight session will be conducted on Friday 26th August at 1pm to clarify the details of WILLS & ESTATE PLANNING to understand and avoid the pitfalls that can beset and divide families. Whatever your age or situation everyone needs to ensure that their wishes are affectively carried out when they die. This session will be of interest and importance to everyone, and those outside U3A are welcome to attend.

DOG BITES

In this article I’ll address the legal implications on the owner of the dog that has attacked a person or another dog.

owner can be fined up to $30,000. The person can also take the dog owner to court and the State will prosecute the owner under Criminal Law.

Currently under the Moreton Bay Regional Council Animal Act if a dog attacks a person or an animal it is not mandatory to report the incident.

If the person chooses to report the attack, there is a 24/7 phone number.

The person must also provide as many details as possible of the attack.

Council will then investigate the incident and can declare the dog as dangerous or menacing.

Nowhere is it set out that the dog should be assessed by a qualified Veterinary Behavourist. As written previously 95% of dog attacks are due to the child’s erratic behaviour. A dog that bites does it for a reason, whether we can identify it or not. Majority of dogs are not bad or aggressive and bite for no reason. Another common reason a dog bites is anxiety and fear.

Once the dog has been declared dangerous or menacing the owner must comply with special conditions stated in the Legislation: • identify the dog with a microchip implant • dog declared dangerous must be muzzled in public (yet most dog attacks of children occur in a home or backyard) • dog declared dangerous must be desexed • if the dog is at another place it has to be held by a person on a lead at all times

If your dog does bite the first thing to do is take your dog to the local vet for a full check up including blood tests to ensure there is no physical reason for the behaviour. If nothing is found then a referral to a Veterinary Behaviourist to access the anxiety.

Never yell or smack the dog after it has bitten someone or animal as this will only increase the anxiousness. Never rehome the dog or in the majority of doags they do not need to be euthanized either. It is better to find out why the dog attacked in the first place.

It has been recommended by some to have a mandatory reporting system for all dog bites. This would be too difficult to enforce and it will not prevent dog bites.

LITTLE DOGS Small dogs are very popular in this area, especially Maltese x Shi Tzu which are cheekily called “standard issue “ dogs for the Bribie region.

Such small dogs were purpose bred for human companionship and suffer a few design flaws, though generally they live good long lives .

The design flaws include big eyes and short snouts making for good eye contact (important in a companion dog) but creating soft tissue crowding in the throat and dry eyes.

Being bred as couch spuds rather than athletes, many have loose or floating knee caps, or develop heart murmurs.

Small dogs often live long and I have seen them make late teens and occasionally early twenties .

YOUR BALANCING ACT Life is about Balance, and there are two balancing acts that everyone needs to perform.

One “Balance”, which seems to be a trendy catchphrase lately, is where you are trying to be someone to everyone. There are partners, children, grandkids, parents, pets, fun things you want to do, things others want you to do and amongst all of this you need to look after your body so that you can physically do all of the above, sometimes all in one day!

We all know that we need to eat well to keep ourselves healthy, and just as importantly we shouldn’t beat ourselves up about having the odd fun night that may end up consisting of too many wines or too much chocolate, because life is about Balance. Of course as long as the over indulging moments don’t over take the healthy eating moments your weight and health should also remain Balanced.

But there is that other kind of Balance, and this Balance is the really important one.

This Balance is the one that stops you falling when, like I often do, you trip over nothing, stumble around, look shiftily over your shoulder to make sure no one saw you and then pretend to kick the invisible nonexistent rock onto the road so that no one else trips over it.

For most of us Balance naturally occurs around the time we decide that crawling is boring and makes us way too easy to catch by kissy faced strange smelling aunts. Yes weird relatives help us to discover walking and running, and as we get better at it, we stand up, we stay up and only when life throws us a curve ball like a hidden hole in the ground or too much alcohol does Balance become an issue.

But as we age “Keeping Our Balance” is one of the most important issues for seniors who wish to remain independent and selfsufficient. Balance keeps us safe in our own homes, it keeps us safe in busy streets and shopping malls and even if we do fall, someone who has good balance will be less likely to have severe injuries.

A lot of people get confused about “being Strong” and picture huge bodybuilder type muscles. In reality everyone needs strength to just live a normal life. To be strong enough to stand on one leg and lift the other off the ground may not seem like a life changing exercise to most 30 year olds, but if you struggle to do this, then how do you wash your foot in the shower? How do you step up a step – even a low one into your own home, in fact just walking requires the ability to stand on each leg while the other is off the ground.

The best way to keep independent is to keep your body strong! Although you can increase your strength and mobility at any age, the earlier you start to include strength exercises in your life the longer you will remain independent. A full body exercise routine with weights or resistance bands is a great way to increase your health, mobility, independence, and strength and by including two or three workouts in your week you can make a noticeable difference to all aspects of your life.

Good Balance can be life-saving, and can also make life a little easier for your family and friends who are the ones who will need to be there to help you climb stairs, reach for food off the supermarket shelves, help you wash your feet in the shower, or if they really do love you, they will bend down and pretend to move the invisible rock that you just tripped over.

Danger in the comfort zone Whether it’s exercise, food, alcohol or other life choices, we all, if we admit it deep down, have an old habit we’d like to break or a new one we want to create.

However, our comfort zone of usual behaviours can keep us stuck, familiarly ‘content’ in our underlying discontent.

Did you customarily start the year with good intentions to exercise more, drink less, worry less and enjoy life more….how is that going for you now half way through the year, did life get in the way?

Studies show that it takes on average AT LEAST 2 MONTHS OF CONSISTENT EFFORT for us to break a habit or create a new one and for many of us that figure is going to look a lot bigger.

Interestingly the driving force behind change is suffering, otherwise why would we want to change?

The amount of suffering driving that change is very individual though, we all have unique tolerances, awarenesses and expectations of life.

Often we may not even see our mild discontent as true suffering, but this is a veil of illusion, it all adds up.

Stress is the biggest precursor of disease, so every time you get anxious, overworked or angry, every time you reach for comfort food or leave that Yoga class til next week, every time you ignore the pain and reach for a pain killer you are digging the groove of your current habits deeper and making your emotional and physical state more and more vulnerable to disease.

Here are some questions you may like to ask yourself :

How much does a vibrant, healthy, fulfilling life matter to you?

How much suffering are you prepared to take before you take action?

How much is being stuck in the danger of your comfort zone costing you, in your relationships, your work and your life?

Golden Age Day Respite Centre GOLDEN AGE CENTRE SOCIAL PROGRAM FOR THE OVER 65’s Golden Age has been providing the opportunity for social activity and carer respite for people in our community since 1997. We are located in a lovely garden setting on the corner of Arcadia Avenue and Golf Drive at Woorim. Our social group and day respite program runs Monday thru Thursday for the over 65years.

While driving around the island recently, it was a delight to discover a front yard full of wondrous imagination in White Patch. Creations made from metal of all shapes and sizes, fused together to craft a small piece of fantasy in the eye of the beholder, caught our attention. Everything from ants, dogs and minions to trucks, tractors and planes, even Ned Kelly’s. It was absolutely magical and sight for all to see.

y wife Selina and I went to the NEW Kinnaree Thai restaurant for dinner and we were VERY IMPRESSED! These guys are a family run restaurant, the owners Chris and Pichit are both hands on deck. Chris entertains the diners while Pichit cooks the food and I have to say WOW! This is really something new to our wonderful Bribie and dining out experience. Their Thai food is the BEST I have had, hands down. Selina and I have travelled through Thailand and sampled the food the locals eat.

However, this is a Thai restaurant WITH A HUGE DIFFERENCE. Chris and Pichit have created a masterpiece menu which really does cater for all tastes. If you have never tried Thai or maybe not too sure on the flavours or spiciness, no worries! They will cook your food to exactly the way you like it as the menu offers an array of different dishes but masterfully created to suit the Aussie taste buds. Myself and the lovely Selina have sampled most cuisines from around the world and we always cook Thai, Chinese and Indian food from scratch using fresh ingredients, this is almost like a mix of the three, somehow, in a very special way. The flavours were original and so, so good.

THE BRIBIE WINELANDER Friday 17th June was the evening of the Beefsteak and Burgundy Clubs second dinner and was attended by nineteen members. Once again The Kia Restaurant hosted the evening which began with canapes served with The Arras non-vintage Sparkling wine from Tasmania. Arras is made by Ed Carr who has amassed over 100 trophies including 21 consecutive ‘Best Sparkling Wine of the Show’ at capital city wine shows. The wine is made in the traditional method spending three years on lees in the bottle and six months under cork before being released. Unlike French wines there is less of a yeasty character and more of a pleasant fruit finish, a very good wine to start the evening.

The entrée was a Mezze plate with lamb kofta with tzatziki, wakame topped oyster, Szechuan coated squid and a bocconcini stuffed mushroom. This was served with a 2014 Eden Valley Viognier, a grape variety that Yalumba have grown for around twenty years. It is an interesting white wine grape that a small amount, around 2-5%, often finds itself blended into shiraz and helps to soften the red wine variety. It is a silky wine and has a luscious texture with a hint of orange oil, and has aromas of apricot and stone fruit.

The second white wine was The 2014 Margaret River Chardonnay from Robert Oatley who is famous for

establishing Rosemount in the late 1960’s before selling the vineyard to Treasury Estate for $1.4 billion in 2001.

Robert was also famous for sailing his yacht Wild Oats in The Sydney to Hobart yacht Race and his purchase of Hamilton Island, he passed away in January this year. The wine surprised several in the room who had not had a Chardonnay for some time being a very different style to the heavy Chardonnays of the 1990’s. Margaret River is considered the prime area of Australia for growing Chardonnay and winemaker Larry Cherubino is one of the districts best winemakers and the wine was a delight being mid-weight with white peach aromas.

The main course was tender braised beef cheeks on a creamy garlic mash with broccolini and Dutch carrots accompanied by the Brown Bros. 2014 Tamar Ridge Devils Corner Pinot Noir and The iconic Wynn’s Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 vintage.

The Pinot comes from Tasmania and had aromas of black cherries, dark fruits and a hint of raspberries, if you are looking for a good Pinot Noir then Liquorland have this at an everyday price of $17, you won’t be disappointed. Cool climate Tasmania is producing great sparkling wines and Pinot Noirs.

The Cabernet Sauvignon summed up the best of The Coonawarra district

and this vintage was an excellent example of Cabernet at its finest. The colour was inky black, the wine had aromas of blackcurrants, dark spices and tobacco. The palate tasted of blackcurrants and finished ever so smooth, a great wine indeed.

I mentioned to Chef Cameron that as I was including a botrytis dessert wine could he include something with blue cheese as I have found that this makes for a perfect match to this type of wine.

He produced one of the finest desserts I have had for some time serving a pear and frangipane tart with a blue cheese panna cotta, the result was quite stunning.

The wine served was The De Bortoli 2008 Noble One Botrytis Semillon which stands alongside the best in the world for this style of wine. Botrytis is a fungus (botrytis cinerea) that attacks the grapes when conditions are right and literally sucks the water out of the grape leaving them like raisins. Hopefully the vineyard has already competed their harvest as the last thing you want is this fungus to attack the other grapes. What juice is left produces a luscious wine in very modest quantities, a perfect end to the evening.

COMMUNITY CONCERT

The Laurie Young Concert Band will, again, be performing in Brennan Park on Sunday the 24th July bringing a programme of “Songs of Praise” from 1.30 till 2 pm, followed by music of all genres to get the toes tapping.

The Band will be well known to many, having performed for other Island events, including Christmas Carols on both Bribie Island and Sandstone Point.

Now, for some 14 years, the Bribie Island Baptist Church has happily sponsored this community event whilst Laurie Young and his team have enjoyed the opportunity of entertaining in the pleasant surroundings of Brennan Park.

In all this time there has been no cancellation because of bad weather and hopefully, the weather will, again, be fine.

The Laurie Young Concert Band, now in its 27th year, was originally formed in 1989 as The Western Suburbs Music Society Incorporated Concert Band. On retirement from the Australian Army in 1990, Major Laurie Young OAM (Ret.), was appointed as Director of Music of the Society and shortly after that time the Band began performing as “The Laurie Young Concert Band”.

The Band performs regularly during the year, giving concerts at retirement villages, providing ceremonial support for parades such as ANZAC Day, Victory in Europe Commemorations and Remembrance Day services. The Band also provides fanfare teams for events such as the annual St. John of Jerusalem Investiture Service and other similar activities.

Can We Talk?

Dear Bribie Islanders, I have come to the revelation that language is a phenomenon. Is it not such a beautiful thing? A series of events have brought me to one such a revelation: studying a language in school, living in a linguistically-rich household (where talking is a major event!) and my growing intrigue in the colour of culture and how this culture is expressed through language. We have schools and University degrees dedicated to the sole-purpose of learning another language and yet I don’t think we appreciate it as an artform as much as we could.

It is a universally acknowledged truth that language is a major way we verbalise our feelings. Moreover, the subtle and art-full way we use language can reveal much more about ourselves than expected, particularly when it comes to romantic interest and flirtation. Of course language taking on this role can be best seen in Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ where it takes an entire novel for one young man of great wealth, status and

propriety to express his feelings for a girl from country England. But herein lies the beauty of language. It is not just a means of communication where information is passed in a robotic and practical manner but rather a way of displaying soul and depth of character.

It is not so much what you say but the way you say it that conveys meaning to the recipient.

Take for example the Chinese language of Mandarin for a more literal perspective. In Mandarin there are not only vowels and consonants but also tones. Get the tone (the songlike inflection of a word) wrong and you change the whole meaning of the word! How easy would it be to get misinterpreted? We misinterpret each other in our own country let alone another culture that uses tones within a language to convey meaning! But does that not show how powerful and complex communicating can be? In fact, there are some great comedic examples of language gone wrong particularly, it seems, when it comes to company slogans. When the Chevy Nova was introduced in South America

Recent rains and the seasonal change of harvest locations has meant less volumes of fresh produce arriving at the Brisbane Produce Market, pushing some kitchen favourites higher in price.

Mandarins, bananas and New Zealand kiwifruit are the best buys for school lunches, and join watermelon, honeydew, pineapples, passionfruit and pawpaw as the best priced fruit.

You will still be able to buy value-formoney beetroot, brussels sprouts, cabbage, eggplant, mushrooms, onions, sweet potatoes and pumpkin.

USA peaches and nectarines range from cheap to firm in price, depending on their age and quality with the oldest produce being sold off cheaply.

However, there are short supplies of Asian vegetables, beans, sweet corn and zucchini making good quality produce expensive to buy.

Navel oranges are also firmly priced for the best quality but there are still a large number of seconds at reasonable prices.

Expect to pay firm prices for broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, capsicums, carrot, celery, fennel, leeks, parsnips, snow peas, silverbeet, squash, potatoes and imported asparagus.

Good quality apples, all berries, lemons, limes, rockmelon and pears are firmly priced.

Salad items are in less demand in the colder months meaning the shorter supplies have not affected the hip pocket in the same way.

Look for reasonably priced avocados, lettuce, mixed salad leaf, cucumbers and eshallots.

Coriander is hard to find and expensive and basil has firmed in price but most other herb supplies are plentiful.

You will pay firm prices for good quality tomatoes.

There are still plenty of custard apples, pomegranate, starfruit (carambola), soursop, cumquats, dragon fruit (pitaya), rambutan, black sapote (chocolate pudding fruit), chestnuts, rosellas, cara cara, ruby grapefruit, nashi pears and end of season Australian persimmons on the shelves.

How easy it is to get misunderstood.

But like I said before you don’t have to literally speak a different language or live in a different culture to get misunderstood. The same thing can very well happen to families living under the same roof! That is because language is so individual and culture so unique that communication can be different from one person to the next even if they’ve grown up together. And what does everyone say is one of the most important things when it comes to relationships: communication! It’s all about communication. I think the deal-breaker is when someone is just being misinterpreted and most of the time that being unintentional. The men from Mars women from Venus thing wasn’t too far from the truth. We can and do speak very different languages sometimes.

So how do we overcome this? I think in the same way that we study

a language from a different country, we need to study the language of our soul-mates. How to they interpret things, how do they communicate, what speaks to them? How can I get the message across without offending them? Such big questions that need a lot of time, patience and interest.

Unfortunately, so much conflict arises simply because we interpret something as disrespectful or unloving when it wasn’t meant to come across that way at all. What one thing means to someone can be completely different from another. Many people have taken such an interest in studying this uniquely human behaviour that they’ve written books to help us! Ones such as, “The 5 Love Languages” by Dr. Gary Chapman or “Love and Respect”

At the end of the day, the time and effort you put in to really getting to know the people around you shows and how amazing to think that your life-partner may only ever have you to understand their little nuances. No-one else on Earth will ever get them like you do. Have fun!

opening of the train track as Roy’s wife Myra, who remains a current resident on the island, and other wives became heavily involved. One specific additional member was Trevor Little, however that was just the beginning for these railway enthusiasts. Since opening day, numbers have swelled and the group expanded as more aficionados became involved. The group now stretches across the area, from Birkdale, Manly and Ducack on the south side of the river, to Cloyna in the Burnett region.

Melsa Bribie Club

Before Bribie Island Train Rides was established, MELSA Park was a virtual swampland. When the first canal estate was established in Bongaree, the sand removed to establish the canal, was deposited in MELSA Park as fill. This provided foundations for the railway to be constructed. It took 12 months of hard work and dedication to build the first stage with the assistance of a $130,000 Government Grant and 6 unemployed people full time to build the railway.

Bribie Island Train Rides was established in April, 1985, to offer an attraction for the children and

adults visiting Bribie Island by the MELSA Bribie Club. The original track occupied the area around the parkland seen from the road. During 1994/95 the track expanded to travel through the bushland towards the RSL club.

The current track used for the public running is approximately 570m with the same again in secondary lines.

The MELSA Bribie club was originally founded in 1981, by retirees Roy Milner, Hugh “John” Bull, Dick Steele, Bob Loseby, Eric Richards, and Merv Hall, who all had an interest in railways. However, the club grew significantly in the 4 years prior to the

The MELSA Bribie club are overjoyed at what the trains at MELSA park have achieved. Their goal to have as many people and members enjoy the facility over the years has been met and they have had many adults that had previously ridden on the trains as children, return with their own children.

The MELSA Bribie Club now own and use 15 steam, battery-electric, petrolelectric and petrol driven locomotives in five inch and seven and quarter inch gauge.

POLICE PROTECTION! “Coffee with a Cop” will be held Thursday on the 14th July at Gloria Jeans Café from 10am-2pm. This point of contact opportunity gives Bribie Islander’s a chance to discuss with a police officer community law enforcement issues in depth in a relaxed environment. It also gives Police the opportunity to make themselves familiar with the public, initiating better ways to address community issues together. When “Coffee with A Cop” was last held it was very successful, highlighting issues like Domestic Violence, Home Security, and Road and Traffic concerns. Jan Donaldson from Bribie Island Dementia Support will be attending also, for those seeking awareness and information regarding services and assistance for Alzheimers and Dementia.

Our “Stop Domestic Violence” initiative has been set up to heighten awareness of local support services in our community for victims of domestic violence, particularly for new comers, or visitors who are unaware of local services available. The Police service works in conjunction with The Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre to provide information crucial services to encourage victims to seek help. Posters containing information for assistance have been distributed in hotels and clubs in the area, together with 4,600 drink coasters distributed to cafes, hotels and clubs to highlight awareness.

Our aim is to encourage people to seek assistance before the police need to be involved, with the purpose to avoid a dangerous situation occurring. Domestic Violence

begins with relationship issues, and if we can communicate when these issues commence, we have a better opportunity to assist before the situation escalates. We want the community to feel safe to come forward to access available resources.

Domestic Violence effects everyone in our community from the witness to the victim and including the perpetrators.

Domestic disturbances are highly emotive not only for victims, but for emergency services. If you feel that a domestic disturbance is in your neighbourhood, contact police, even if it proves to be nothing, Police would prefer to attend a disturbance, rather can confront a dangerous situation for all. It is all our responsibility to protect each other, and to speak out for the purpose of safety for our community.

Over time parts in the system wear out , seals begin to leak and filters get blocked.

First avenue Originally named Campbell Rd., for the director of the tug company who had the road built from Bongaree to Woorim in 1923. It was planned to be a four lane road and steam tramway, but this did not eventuate although initially it was a toll road.

• On Bribie Island, a pioneer tourist industry was growing by 1913, but anyone disembarking from the SS Koopa and wishing to go to the surf beach at Woorim, had no real choice but to walk.

• Bill Shirley, having served with the Army engineers in World War I, came to Bribie Island to supervise the building of the a road to Ocean Beach. It was hard manual work and he camped with the workmen on the island. Returned servicemen were employed, some of whom were TPI pensioners.

• In 1914, Mr GP Campbell of the Brisbane Tug and Steamship Company, obtained the lease for a ‘right of way’ from Bongaree jetty to Woorim intending to provide a steam tram for passengers, but World War I interviened.

• With the completion of Campbell Road to Woorim in 1924, Bill Shirley converted work trucks into simple buses with plank seats, which became part of the Bribie Bus Line, conveying passengers from Bongaree Jetty to Woorim.

• Bill Shirley was the local representative of the Tug & Steamship Company as well as the company’s toll collec-tor on this road, and with his family was proprietor of a large guest house at Woorim Beach.

• In 1923 Blake Brothers were contracted to supply and transport gravel and porphyry stone from a quarry at Windsor to a riverside wharf in Brisbane from where it was taken by ship to Bongaree.

• A temporary wooden jetty was built at Bongaree to unload the road materials using a steam-driven derrick to lift the stone into the skip on the jetty.

• Blake Brothers provided the trucks and men for the construction work. Lack of roads and bridges on the mainland, plus having to load trucks on to a cattle barge to cross Pumicestone Passage added to the difficulties of road building.

• Owing to the nature of the sandy soil, workmen cut saplings to be laid across the track in corduroy fashion so that trucks and gravel didn’t sink into the sand.

• During World War 2 Bribie Island was of strategic importance to Australian Defences of Moreton Bay and Brisbane.

It was a major training area for United States and Australian troops. The road across the island (First Avenue) was the artery from Pumicestone Passage to military installations on Ocean Beach.

• First Avenue remains a vibrant part of island life linking Bongaree Village to the industrial and business area, recreation fields and to the surf club and village of Woorim

Real Spirituality.

Real spirituality begins with stripping back the layers to reveal your true soul.

Once the process has begun, it continues indefinitely.

From early childhood we are influnced by those that raise us, those that teach us, and those that portray the world to us . Parents, siblings, extended family, schools, teachers, peers, media, government and religious institutions all play a role in the ‘moulding’ of our existence.

The process of becoming our true selves involves reviewing that which we have been told, and making purposeful application to question everything. We then ‘take what we want to keep’ from that, and leave the rest behind. Those which become alien to us, or no longer resonate with us, or concepts we have outgrown, move away from us to reveal who we REALLY are, what we REALLY feel and how we REALLY think!

For example I was raised Catholic, and while I am grateful to have been raised

with any kind of spiritual upbringing, I realised as an adult, in order to be true to my religion, I would have to be a ‘sinner’ daily ! (Laughing)... Seriously though, rather than be a hypocrite, I had to let go of that influence in my life in order to live in peace, and with freedom. Having said that, I have had to let go of some spiritual concepts also, that I found not to be truly authentic to me personally.

REAL spirituality is about receiving all your information from within, unaffected by outside influences. It’s about trusting yourself, the universe and spirit ! Both your spirit within, and the spirits of others who guide you through intuition and insight. Many years ago, as I began to apply these spiritual concepts to my life, and proceeded to ‘undo’ the many levels of my conditioning, I noticed one very important thing! That my life before as I knew it was utter and complete chaos!

I found that when I only acted apon the information I received from within, rather than listening to other’s opinons, my life became peaceful!! Successful! Enjoyable!

Freeing! Loving! I began to accept all the aspects of myself, even those that others saw as negative, and became healthy in my perception of self.

The joy that comes with being YOU is phenominal! No apologies , no being what others expect you to be, no morphing yourself in order to please, no sacrificing your dreams and wishes.........just BEING the person you were designed to be from birth!

Now THAT’S freedom!

Agarics - Fungi on Bribie

If the rains come in autumn or early winter on Bribie we will most certainly see an amazingly diverse eruption of fungi.

The Agarics which are the most common to be found are the fungi with simple gills.

They come in many wonderful colours and strange forms and spring up in their thousands on grasslands, gardens, parks, along the roadside and in forests on what I call “A Fungi Day”. Garden mulch makes an excellent bed for the growth of many species. Some varieties such as the Leucocoprinis appear in our pot plants.

Fungi die off very quickly and quite often after a few days there is no evidence of their remains.

Fungi play a very important part in managing our eco-system. They are a significant factor in the breakdown of dead plants and returning the nutrients to the soil. Some agarics grow on animal dung and on rotting carcasses.

There are many native species of Agarics in Australia. A few of the species are edible and some are poisonous. Coloured mushrooms were once used for dying wool and cotton.

Fungi is neither a plant nor an animal but are more closely related to the animal world as they need to feed on organisms such as plant and animal matter for their survival. Plants are able to produce their

own food.

Fungi do not require sunlight to grow.

Agarics have a fleshy cap and gills.

Located in the gills are the spores which are their reproductive agents.

There are over 70,000 known species of fungi in the world with many more yet undiscovered, unstudied and unnamed.

Much more is yet to be learned about the fungi kingdom.

The Bribie Road Saddle Club is located at 294 Bribie Island Road, Caboolture and is situated on a picturesque 105 acres. It is a non-profit organisation which is funded by government grants, income from services provided and donations from the community and the general public.

From July 13, the government also has set up a Get Started Voucher valued at $150 to help families have access to art, sport and recreation facilities that are approved for subsidy. Bribie Road Saddle Club is an approved participant of this beneficial offer for children and young people. To apply for a voucher contact 13QGOV (13 74 68) or email : getstarted@npsr.qld.gov.au The Bribie Road Saddle Club services to the public include School Holiday Camps, Birthday Parties, Riding Lessons for all ages and also caters for special needs children and adults. Their Riding instruction ranges

from beginners to competition level, completely tailored to the individual. The Bribie Road Saddle Club is insured to cater to children as young as 3 years, right through to adults of any age. To date, their eldest client was an 80 year old stockman, who had the inkling to return to the saddle! The lessons involve horse care from the ground up, teaching pupils basic horse care such as grooming, tacking up (saddling), feeding, watering, hoof care, horseman-ship in general and preparations for showing: Banding, braiding, rosettes, mane and tail grooming.

The Bribie Island Saddle Club also provides agistments for horse owners at a reasonable rate. Those who have their horses on agistment with the saddle club have access to all facilities: Paddocks, round yards, and an all-weather sand-

Pieta, the Manager and Head Instructor of The Bribie Island Saddle Club, has a vast experience behind her in the horse industry. Pieta’s father, uncle and grandfather are all horse trainers; her grandfather was also a jockey in Northern New South Wales. Her father was originally a harness racing trainer and later moved into training thoroughbreds at Runcorn, Queensland. After a small amount of Pony Club and showing, Pieta went into racing and assisted her father with the training of thoroughbreds.

After marrying and starting a family, (son 15, daughter 12 and twins girls 6), she returned to the horse industry by purchasing racehorses. When she was later offered her current position she jumped at the chance to provide such an important service to the public, particularly involving special needs children, which is a subject close to her heart considering she has special needs children of her own. She found herself then moving into competitive horse sports, showing her Quarter Horse, her Paint mare and her daughter’s pony.

ISLANDER EXTRAORDINAIRE - LES BAX

I was fortunate enough to interview Les Bax this week and I can honestly say I haven’t enjoyed an interview more to date.

Les is a great man with a wonderful sense of humour and a pride in our island that is obvious in his facial expressions alone.

I went to him with prepared questions which quickly became irrelevant, as his story came naturally, so I just typed away while listening with great interest. At different points in his story, you could tell when something humorous was coming, as his eyes would shine in a cheeky manner. I wrote this article straight from the sentiment he resented me, which is why I am presenting it in quotations.

“My first visit to Bribie stemmed from an invitation from a childhood friend and his mother to holiday for a week here in 1947. I was 15 at the time and rode my pushbike from Nundah to Sandgate with a knapsack to my mate’s house to meet them in order to depart by bus from Sandgate to Redcliffe where we caught “The Cooper” from Redcliffe jetty to Bribie Island. The Cooper was a steamship that was built by the Brisbane Tug and Steamship Company. It was built for those people as a luxury cruise ship travelling

from Brisbane to Redcliffe and Bribie.

When the war came, the navy ‘acquired’ The Cooper to use as a mothership, and it travelled as far as New Guinea. Being a steamship, they took coal on board in 44 gallon drums, in 1945 after the war, rather than exporting coal to New Guinea to bring it home, they towed it back to Brisbane instead. The Brisbane Tug and Steamship Company presumed they would receive the vessel back into their possession however, the Navy kept it for another two years and used it to generate electricity. They refurbished the vessel and then returned it sometime in 1947.

Which coincidently is the year we came aboard…for our Bribie Holiday. We rented one of the 12 Apostles for 5 shillings for the week. (The 12 apostles were huts that were rented to holiday makers). My mate and I, Dairy Wasson, (yes his real name was Dairy) walked everyday around the bottom of the island to Red Beach. We observed the holiday makers staying in the 12 Apostles huts catching more fish than they could eat. So much so they were giving them away!

My second experience in Bribie came about when my Uncle George Cliese built

his house in Murray Street, Woorim. In 1958 he contacted me, and said he would pay me to come up and paint the inside of his house while I was on holidays from work. I rode my motor bike, a 500 AJS, over on the barge which was operated by Billy Woods. I was only there two days when my uncle’s very good friend the publican Kev Frawley, walked into the house and said: “How do you live here?”( I had a camp stretcher and a frying pan). He said: “Go into the dining room at the pub and have your dinner every night, it will cost you nothing.” I had a couple of beers after dinner with the kitchen staff nightly (they conned me into washing up some nights), and I’d walk home with Mavis who lived on the corner of North Street and Third Avenue. When the painting was done I returned every weekend to visit Mavis for 18 months, and we were married in 1960. Mavis then moved to Brisbane with me, and we have been married 56 years on the 6th of August 2016.

A friend of mine, Ron Duell was mates with the owner of a deep sea fishing charter boat, and we would often go deep sea fishing on weekends. We filled in when the owner of the boat couldn’t find enough paying tourists to operate the 12 reels fixed to the boat, so we got to go free of charge. Were given free meals and drinks and what we caught belonged to the boat, though at times he would send us home with fish.

the sand at high tide. It was also prearranged that Billy Woods arrive early the next morning (Saturday) and detonate the hull of the Cormorant. He turned up as arranged, not aware that the council had not turned up on the Friday, and blew it up where it was and it stayed there until 1990.

Continuing to visit Mavis on the island and for fishing trips, during the barge ride, Billy Woods and I often had a laugh about that!”

Les on fishing: “Back then we fished at the bottom end of Hutchinsons Reef, we would catch Snapper and Sweet Lip , some at 15 and a quarter pound ! We used Pilchards with two 60 ganged hooks, cut the head and tails of the Pilchard and flicked them overboard for burly, and placed the body on the hooks. Over the years, the fish numbers have dwindled, and the costs of outside fishing has soared, in addition of course the bag limits have been reduced. We were blessed to be fishing at a time that was of plenty”.

I spent about an hour and a half with Les and Mavis, looking at photos and discussing life in general, families, friends and relationships. I did so because I enjoyed their company and they made me feel very comfortable while I was there.

They were open, humourous, relaxed, genuine people and I felt completely at home. – Kellyanne.

Ron called me and asked me to have a Friday off one day, to tow a boat from Brisbane to Bribie Island and continue on for a fishing trip. We towed the SS Cormorant to Bribie and it had been pre-arranged with the council for them to turn up with a tractor to assist to pull the Cormorant further up the beach. The council didn’t show (sound familiar?) and it was supposed to be beached by the tractor, so we left the boat just resting on

John Cupper, a club member, was once again our judge for the night and gave us a thorough informative critique on all of the competition entries.

Gordon Bentzen delivered a report on the PSQ Convention which he attended at Yeppoon over three days. He also presented a slideshow of some of the stunning photographs taken by PSQ members.

A Power Point presentation on sunset photography was compiled by Gail with information on planning, settings and the use of a tripod in readiness for our club sunset shoot later in the month.

BRIBIE LOCALS WIN DOMETIC ‘FOLLOW THE SUN’ COMPETITION

with her doctor. Her doctor booked her in for a mammogram, which came back clear. It was discovered during this process that mammograms don’t show all ALL types of Cancers, which was news to Peta and Kirk. Peta had an ultrasound the same day, which showed enough to warrant a biopsy, the results of which confirmed their worst fears, and Peta was diagnosed with stage 3 Invasive Lobular Carcinoma.

Breast cancer survivor Peta Newcombe and her husband Kirk are winners in the Dometic ‘Follow the Sun’ competition, which will allow the Bribie Island couple travel to around Australia to raise funds and awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).

While I had the immense pleasure of interviewing Peta and Kirk Newcombe this week, I was not prepared myself for this interview to raise such a range of emotions in the three of us.

During this interview lasting bonds of friendship originated and for me, it was an absolute honour to spend time with these beautiful, courageous and in the face of a crisis, humourous people.

When you hear a story like this and experience for yourself the physical, emotional and financial impact that Cancer has had on this family, you realise how very blessed we all are. It makes you less inclined to complain, and gives you an overwhelming urge to hug your loved ones.

Peta’s awareness of her Cancer started with a feeling from within, a knowing on some level that something just wasn’t right in her body. She found a lump in one of her breasts via a breast exam, which turned out to be cysts. Following that while showering, she noticed that the nipple on her other breast was inverted, and this lead her to a visit

“We had just participated in an awareness motor bike ride for breast cancer called “The Bra Ride.” It was so ironic that Peta was diagnosed herself 6 days following. The recommended treatment at that point was a double mastectomy, but after receiving a second opinion regarding treatment and a change of surgeons, I commenced chemotherapy first to shrink the tumour prior to surgery.

The next stage of treatment involved the removal of the lymph nodes and my right breast. The process of chemotherapy gave me time to come to terms with the fact my breast was going to be removed, however it was still a deeply emotional process.”

“The effects of the chemo were moderate, and at worst I felt lethargic and just generally lacking in energy, I found the loss of my hair probably the most difficult thing to deal with.”

Peta was informed by her doctor that chemotherapy treatments have evolved somewhat these days, and for most people don’t suffer as much as they used to as the effects have lessened with new developments in the treatment. Peta went through radiation with similar, minimal effects.

Kirk and Peta did however find the travelling for treatment difficult, as treatment were at a distance from the island, Bribie Island appearing to be in ‘no man’s land’ in relation to cancer therapies which are accessible only in either Brisbane, or the Sunshine Coast.

While we as islanders may not feel that is a large distance to either, take into consideration the tension and stress that kind of travelling can cause over a 6 week period, Monday to Friday.

Peta found herself taking notice of her general health, not to any extreme, just an awareness of what she was eating in order to make sure she was at her physical best to combat the disease. In observing her strength and personality, it was obvious to me that she also held within her a positive, if not resilient

attitude towards her disease and her recovery. In other words, her will shines through with her resolve to beat that cancer thing. She became very animated while telling me that although she is now cancer free, her doctor isn’t quite ready to ‘clear her’ entirely.

She knows she is free of cancer, and she takes that attitude moving forward. She knows that she started this whole process with an inner feeling of knowing, so of course she can trust that feeling now the process is resolved.

Cancer has visited this family with a high impact on every area of their lives.

Emotionally you can see that they hold awareness, release, love and freedom.

They understand perfectly the value of life, the passion that this experience has given them to assist others, and to bring awareness to the public that will save lives. It has encouraged them to re-evaluate the way that they live, work and love. They had to sell Peta’s business, but in reviewing that decision have realised that while that decision was difficult, it has freed them to pursue other interests. Peta had a concern for her daughters and sisters that her cancer may be hereditary, so she was tested, and gratefully she doesn’t carry the BRCA Gene.

Ongoing treatment for Peta involves medications such as an anti- estrogen drug, for the purpose of calming the hormones, the cancer that Peta suffered from was fed by estrogen. She continues to be healthy and active, and looks the picture of health and energy.

When I asked her what her experience with cancer has taught her, she responded with: “We just don’t say no anymore, we say YES! If someone asks us to a party we go. We are doing what we want to do! Living and relaxing! This is why we entered this competition in the first place!”

With an application that could not go unrewarded, Peta and Kirk became the exception to the rule by becoming the first ever Dometic Follow the Sun runner ups.

From August 1 they will travel down the coast of Australia with all expenses paid.

Along the way, they will hold happy hours at local caravan parks, providing food and drink to locals and raising funds and awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

JUNE CRIME REPORT

Last week officers from Bribie Island participated in two local traffic operations, targeting speeding and drink driving offences across the division. 352 drivers were breath tested during the week, and 35 traffic infringement notices were issued, primarily for speeding and vehicle registration offences. Although the number of speeding motorists was concerning, it was good to see that only one drink driver was detected. Road Policing Unit also attended the area and fined five drivers, mainly for driving whilst unlicensed and registration offences. Drink driving and speeding are both dangerous activities, and heightened traffic enforcement will be continuing throughout the school holidays.

In recent days there has been a noted increase in stealing from vehicle offences across the Sandstone Point area during the night, particularly tools being removed from tradie’s utes or trailers. Patrols of the area have been increased, but residents at Sandstone Point are asked to keep a look out for anyone or any vehicles acting suspiciously, and to be mindful of the security of their equipment, particularly if vehicles are parked on the street. Please call the station immediately if you suspect an offence may be occurring in your area.

During the week officers were called to attend nine domestic violence incidents, which was a much welcome reduction on previous weeks. If you or someone you know is living with domestic violence, please contact the station for help. Always ring Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.

Several people were charged last month with a range of offences: A 37-year-old Ningi man was charged with unlicensed driving at Ningi, and the vehicle immobilised for 90 days. The man will appear at Caboolture Magistrates Court on June 28.

A 41-year-old Sandstone Point man was charged with driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle at Ningi. The man will appear at Caboolture Magistrates Court on June 28.

A 31-year-old Caboolture man was charged with assault and stealing at Bongaree. The man will appear at Caboolture Magistrates Court on June 24.

An 83-year-old man, a 24-year-old man and a 55-year-old man, all from Bongaree, have been charged with a number of drug offences after a search warrant was executed at an address, including possessing dangerous drugs and permitting a premises to be used for drug offences.

They will appear at Caboolture Magistrates Court on July 5.

A 37-year-old Bellara man was charged with possessing drug utensils and other drug offences at Bellara after a search warrant was executed. The man will appear at Caboolture Magistrates Court on July 5.

A 23-year-old Bongaree man was charged with possessing drug utensils after a search warrant was executed at Bongaree. The man will appear at Caboolture Magistrates Court on July 5.

A 21-year-old woman from Bellara and a 23-year-old man from Banksia Beach were charged with possessing drug utensils at Banksia Beach. They will appear at Caboolture Magistrates Court on July 5.

A 36-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man, both from Bellara, were charged with possessing dangerous drugs after a search warrant was executed. They will appear at Caboolture Magistrates Court on July 5.

A 38-year-old Bellara man was charged with drink driving at Bellara after returning an alleged reading of .085%. He will appear at Caboolture Magistrates Court on July 5.

Perfect weather one month, East Coast lows the next. That’s pretty much how wild extreme & unpredictable the weather patterns can be around this part of the world. East Coast lows are intense, unpredictable low pressure systems which can develop

at any time of the year. Generally, occurring more often during Autumn & Winter. East Coast lows often intensify rapidly overnight, making them one of the more powerful destructive & dangerous weather systems to affect the area. Gail force winds, heavy wide spread rainfall and even flooding, rough dangerous seas/coastal inundation can easily lead to many areas being effected. East Coast lows usually only last a few days. A number of factors affect the formation & intensity of East Coast Lows.

be the pick. Bream should be taken in most areas; the Passage Creeks, Avon Wreck, 112’s & the Bridge will all hold fish. Pilchard Fillets, Chook Gut, Prawns & Mullet Fillets have been catching the bigger fish. Jewies & Snapper will also increase in numbers over the coming weeks. The Bridge, Ripples, Poverty Rock Ledge & any deeper holes up the passage should hold a few decent specimens. Bigger fish baits or live baits the best option for bigger fish. Fishing the right moons & rigs also very important. In the bay, the Wrecks, Ledges and Coffee Rocks have been producing big Cod, Snapper, Moses Perch, Stripies, Jacks, Sweetlip, Yellow Tail Kings and Cobia. The bay also has had some big Long Tail Tuna been taken throughout.

Live baits are counting for most of the fish. Sharks still a problem, but shouldn’t be as bad as during the summer.

The close reefs off The Cape & The Cages have all been fishing well.

When the moon, weather & conditions are favourable anchoring up & starting a burley trail will soon entice a few fish to where you want them. The 80-120m line off Deepest & Southern Barwins holding good Snapper, Pearlies & AJ’s. The Pelagic have gone a little bit quite at the moment

Been some nice cod taken inside the bay

but if you put in the time & effort you will still be rewarded with some XOS Spanish Mackerel, Wahoo & Tuna. Bar Cod, Flame Snapper & Trevalla getting caught in 260-400m on the Volcanos East to North East of The Cape.

Electric Reels are a must in this depth.

Still a few late muddies to be caught & Sandies still out in the bay. All in all it’s going to be another great month to get out on to the water, enjoy the bay & hopefully catch a few fish.

Don’t destroy what you came to enjoy!

Twice last month we saw wind gusts of over 100kms per hour recorded at The Cape & also Inner Beacon. The first low also produced 8-13 metre swells down the coast line. Fortunately Bribie & the local coastline faired pretty well.

Over the last couple of weeks the water temperature has dropped off a couple of degrees also. Which in turn, will bring on some better numbers of our winter species. Bream, Tailor, Jewfish & Snapper will really start to fire up over the next couple of weeks. Tailor have been taken in pretty good numbers up the Bribie Beach, Moreton Island & Scarborough areas. Pilchards, Pike Fish & Benito are the best bet. Trolling hard bodies up behind the surf break will produce some quality fish. Mann Stretch 10 lures, Rapalas, Halcos in blue/silver will

I found this on the internet and thought it well worth while passing along to our locals on Bribie especially as we have quite a long country road coming on to the Island.

This is happening now in WA! Sad, especially if you are inclined to ‘help’ people...

The good news story for Bribie Islandold, young, able, less able- All manner of peoples and their dogs use- the paths, roads, seafront, sea, pubs, golf clubs and bowls clubs, and a manner of Aussie sports- walking, running, slow or fast.

While driving on a rural end of the roadway on Thursday morning, I saw an infant car seat on the side of the road with a blanket draped over it.

For whatever reason, I did not stop, even though I had all kinds of thoughts running through my head. But when I got to my destination, I called the Police and they were going to check it out. But, this is what the Police advised even before they went out there to check....

“There are several things to be aware of ... gangs and thieves are now plotting different ways to get a person (mostly women) to stop their vehicle and get out of the car.

“There is a gang initiation reported by the local Police where gangs are placing a car seat by the road...with a fake baby in it...waiting for a woman, of course, to stop and check on the abandoned baby.

“Note that the location of this car seat is usually beside a wooded or grassy (field) area and the person -- woman -will be dragged into the woods, beaten and raped, and usually left for dead. If it’s a man, they’re usually beaten and robbed and maybe left for dead, too.

DO NOT STOP FOR ANY REASON!!!

DIAL 0-0-0 AND REPORT WHAT YOU SAW, BUT DON’T EVEN SLOW DOWN. “IF YOU ARE DRIVING AT NIGHT AND EGGS ARE THROWN AT YOUR WINDSCREEN, DO NOT STOP TO CHECK THE CAR, DO NOT OPERATE THE WIPER AND DO NOT SPRAY ANY WATER BECAUSE EGGS MIXED WITH WATER BECOME MILKY AND BLOCK YOUR VISION UP TO 92.5%, AND YOU ARE THEN FORCED TO STOP BESIDE THE ROAD AND BECOME A VICTIM OF THESE CRIMINALS. But leave the good clean air on Bribie Island fresh, and worth breathing. If in doubt, look back over the bay and see the bank of traffic, industrial waste, along the foreshore horizon.

Dear Editor, How refreshing to see poetry recorded in your publication and such a delightful name for the group.

Last October my husband and I started a reciting bush poetry group at Woorim. Being sadly lacking in imagination we called the group ‘Bribie Island Bush Poets’.

We have had a good response and have discovered some talented poets.

There is so much hidden talent around and it is great to hear poets works.We have been interested in and performing

Tourism ……... Lower impact, smaller footprint.

We have an open mic session once a month at the Blue Pacific Hotel . The hotel management have kindly allowed us the use of the conference room, free of charge, on the fourth Monday of each month from 6.30 to 9 pm. Some of us come at 5.30 and have a meal at the bistro.

Sharon is welcome to join us on any of our rides which leave the Visitor’s Information Centre on Wednesday 6:30am or Saturday 8:00am.

This is a very friendly group and we listen to great poetry - mostly original but also great works from traditional poets and modern ones.

I will encourage our poets to contribute to your publication and I hope some of them will come along sometime and read their poems.

Our next meeting is the 27th June or by the time of publication - 25th July.

Dear Editor, A cyclist’s reply to Sharon Hedges’ contribution, B.I. #23 The majority of “Bikers” I know have at least one registered vehicle and are rate payers also. Many have more than one registered vehicle be it another car, trailer, boat or caravan. All contributing to the cost via registration and rates.

The broader issue of cycling should also be considered. More people cycling more often has a positive effect on many sections of our lifestyle.
