Nine months into 2015 and already five Queenslanders have lost their lives to domestic violence after laws they turned to for safety failed to protect them.

Last month Gold Coast mother Tara Brown, 24, suffered fatal head injuries from the hands of her ex-partner Lionel Patea.

This came less than a week after Brown sought a protection order from police and was reportedly sent elsewhere to seek help.

A statement that is now subject to a Queensland Police Ethical Standards Command investigation.

Two days after Brown died, Karina Lock, 49, was shot dead by her husband, Steve Lock, in front of a Gold Coast McDonalds.

These women join the list of three Queenslanders who died this year from domestic violence incidents after seeking help.

Two of the previous three killed this year fell too close to home.

Ningi mother of two, Adelle Collins, 39, was stabbed to death in February this year by her former partner Steven Storie, who broke into her home a week after she filed a domestic violence order against him.

In March, Caboolture father of two Bruce Monaghan was stabbed to death in front of his teenage son in their front lawn, allegedly by John Francis, the exhusband of Monaghan’s new girlfriend.

Loaded Gun Found Buried in Bribie Backyard

A local tradesman recently found a loaded firearm that had been buried for many years in a Woorim backyard.

The weapon was delivered to the Bribie Island police station.

Senior Sergeant David Crawford-Raby said in a statement on the Moreton Police website that due to the age and condition of the gun, it could not be safely unloaded.

“Arrangements were made to have the firearm destroyed by officers from the department of Natural Resources and Mines with the assistance of Rangers from Bribie Island and the Bribie Island QFRS,” Mr Crawford-Raby said.

“This incident has highlighted an issue that isn’t uncommon in our community, in that firearms are often located or surrendered to the station after being kept unlicensed and insecure for many years.”

Police encourage anyone who may have possession of an unlicensed firearm to contact the station and arrange for the weapon to be destructed or handed to a licensed person.

“There are instances where sometimes police are not acting fast enough, so let us have these issues investigated,” she said.

“And if we need to do more we will do more.”

The Queensland Police Union has previously called for the Government to declare domestic violence as a statutory crime.

This would enable police to prosecute offenders without making victims speak out.

Currently victims of family violence must apply for a domestic violence order and give evidence in front a magistrate, meaning action can’t be taken unless the violent act has already occurred.

 

Flashing Signs to Brighten Local Schools

- SANDSTONE POINT -

After a long campaign by the State Member, Rick Williams, two schools in the Pumicestone electorate will receive flashing school zone signs this week.

Mr Williams said the automated signs provide a direct visual reminder that the active enforcement period for the school zone speed reductions are in place which is particularly important on high traffic areas around schools.

“These signs can be seen from a distant allowing drivers to safely adjust their speed as they approach the school zone.”

“Also as the lights are only illuminated and Flashing during the period of speed reduction they remain an active attention getter unlike normal signs which may blend into the background over time,” Mr Williams said.

The signs would be installed on Sunderland Drive at Banksia Beach State School and on George Street at Caboolture School. (Expected – week beginning 8 September 2015).

Mr Williams said enhancing school safety was everyone’s business.

“Slowing down could save someone’s life or prevent a serious injury and the bright orange, flashing signs are a reminder to drivers to slow down when schoolkids are about,” Mr William said.

“Together, we can make the streets outside Queensland’s schools much safer, and I am very proud to be able to deliver these important improvements for the safety of our School communities.

Combined Emergency Service Expo

Bribie Island’s Volunteer Marine Rescue will host a free event based around emergency service demonstrations, kid’s activities and family fun this month.

The Combined Emergency Service Expo will be held at the Volunteer Marine Rescue base at Bribie Island Marine Parade, off Sylvan Beach Esplanade, Bellara on October 11, 10am-4pm.

Local emergency agencies will demonstrate the latest in marine rescue, firefighting and policing technology.

Families are encouraged to come along and meet the local emergency services, receive advice, enjoy the jumping castle, stalls and free giveaways.

A fire truck, water cannon, rescue boats and other high-tech emergency service equipment will also be on display.

The Bribie Island Combined Emergency Services Expo is a part of a state wide campaign, Get Ready Queensland, which aims to help local residents prepare for bushfire and storm season.

Hundreds of Seniors Voice Concerns at Local Forum

More than 200 locals attended a meeting earlier this month sharing their concerns on pensions, superannuation and interest rates.

The question and answer session was held by Member for Longman Wyatt Roy and Social Service Minister Scott Morrison at Bribie Island RSL. Scott Morrison said he understood and was compassionate towards what residents were asking.

“You just want to be able to better manage the money you have to preserve in retirement and I’ve always

been very sympathetic to those sorts of arguments,” Mr Morrison said.

Locals said they wanted to be treated fairly and argued that pensions have not increased with interest rates.

Mr Morrison said the deeming rates were changed in March.

“We also changed the deeming rates in September when we came in so we’ve changed them positively twice since we’ve been in government,” he said.

Bribie Walks for William

Bribie residents joined a nationwide movement this month to help raise awareness of missing toddler, William Tyrell.

The ‘Walk 4 William’ took place on September 12, one year exactly since William disappeared.

Local participants began at Brennan Park continuing along the waterfront towards the Bribie Bridge.

William Tyrell went missing from his grandmother’s front yard in Kendall, New South Wales, last year.

Mr Morrison said pensioners with low to modest level assets will be given an average increase of $30 a fortnight in January 2017.

He was three-and-a-half years old and was last seen wearing his Spiderman suit.

Participants were encouraged to wear Spiderman suits or red and blue clothing in memory of William’s last day at home.

The event was organised not only to raise awareness for William but to also discuss stranger danger and to remind families of how suddenly these tragedies can happen.

‘Walk 4 William’ was a nationwide event that was purely aimed in raising awareness and bringing “little Spiderman home”, there was no charity or fundraising held.

from William’s last known sight, Kendall NSW, the community still rallied together in a walk of awareness for child safety.

The past year’s search has caused police to believe William is still alive and possibly a part of a paedophile ring.

If this information is correct, William could be anywhere and Bribie Island should not be ruled out.

Anyone who has any information on William’s whereabouts, whether definite or not, is strongly encouraged to come forward.

The family, police and vast community want answers and for William to return home safe.

Community First Announce Candidate for Division 10 Your Community First Inc. is pleased to announce the endorsement of Arana Hills resident Geoff McKay as our Candidate for Division 10.

This follows the retirement next March of Brian Battersby who has had a distinguished career in Local Government both with the Pine Rivers Shire Council and now the Moreton Bay Regional Council. I know Brian from my 17 Years on Redcliffe City Council and we wish him and his family well.

We were looking for a YCF candidate with a record of long community involvement and a good educational background. We have found this with Geoff McKay who has had a lengthy involvement in the Hills District PCYC, the local Ratepayers Action Group, and the Hills to Brisbane movement. He also has a public administration degree and we think he makes an ideal candidate for Division 10.

He is also a self-funded, semi-retired small businessman who has a good depth of experience in both government and private sectors.

U3A RELOCATES DURING CONSTRUCTION

There is normally a buzz of excitement every day of the week at the University of the Third Age on Bribie, as 1200 students participate in more than 100 classes each week.

However, the buzz now is of workman’s electric tools as construction of the major extension is now well underway.

The Councils Contractor is working hard to maintain the tight construction schedule, and on completion of the foundations the steel framework quickly went up.

The external cladding and roof will soon have the building weather proof, but for many weeks most of the classes will be relocated away from the noise, dust, danger and disruption of the construction site.

All affected classes have now been relocated to a variety of temporary venues, and U3A is delighted with the co-operation of those involved with the Lions Community Centre, the Church of Christ, Catholic Church, Tennis Club,

Soccer Club, Golf Club, Banksia Lodge, Bongaree Bowls Club and many Tutors own homes, who have made these facilities available for use.

The day to day activities at U3A have been virtually closed down and the Reception Office has been moved and is fully operational at 64 First Avenue.

Term 3 classes finished on Friday 18th September and resume after the public holiday on Tuesday 6th October.

Enrolment for term 4 classes began on Monday 28th September at the U3A Centre in the Recreation Hall from 9am till noon.

When the new facilities are completed and handed over there will still be much fitting out and furnishing to be done by U3A before classes can resume in the new and much enlarged facility.

Everyone involved is looking forward to moving into the expanded facility, but full operation is unlikely to be before the first Term of next year.

The annual Bribie Beach Bash will be held on October 4 along the surfside on North Street, Woorim.

It will start and finish in the barbeque area.

The date is chosen to coincide with low tide so that competitors can run on hard flat sand.

The iconic event is now in its 15th year and has cheap entry with all profits going to Multiple Sclerosis QLD. It’s a great event for local competitors looking to run for a cause.

In 2013, Steven Hill, a keen athlete and competitor of that years Bribie Beach Bash was leading the event but went off course for unknown reasons.

He was taken to Caboolture Hospital and later transferred to Redcliffe Hospital where he passed away three days later.

The 15km event now carries his name.

There are a total of seven events available all varying in price and length (see table).

There is a family discount of 10% available (2 adults and 4 children living at the same address).

Cut off time for all events is Midday.

Halfway cut off times are 8:30am for 50km and 9am for the marathon.

There will be random prizes – people must be present when there name is drawn to collect the prize.

A special prize will also be issued to the youngest and oldest competitor.

Bribie Island Triathlon

Bribie Island Triathlon will begin this October 17-18 marking its 32nd year in the community.

This year the race precinct has been given a bigger transition area to cater for increased field size.

Bribie is a favourite for beginners in triathlons with several clubs using the islands track as the climax of their learner programmes.

But it also has supported up and coming athletes with many of the current Queensland Junior Elite team regularly competing at Bribie.

Professional athletes such as Miles

Stewart, Craig Walton, Courtney Atkinson, Chris Hill, Jackie Gallagher, Kate Major, Loretta Harrop and Leanda Cave have all been Bribie Triathlon competitors.

The Active Kids Triathlon for children 7-13 years of age will be introduced this year.

The new Active First Timers Triathlon, a non-competitive event that allows people to get into the sport, will also be introduced.

A BUSHLAND RHAPSODY

A haunting tune the wind had played as through the bush it went, the flowers danced - the bushes swayed the blooms released their scent; the whipbirds cracked - the bellbirds sang the kooka’s laughed with glee, throughout the forest land there rang a bushland melody.

The kangaroo leapt for joy, the blue tongue licked her lips the koala turned and acted coy, the taipan shook her hips; the brolga’s bowed and spread their wings, nearby the wallaby swayed to the tune the forest sings a bushland symphony.

Magpie Logic If you have been in the Public Service or have ever applied for a Public Service Position this one is for you.

Criterion: Strategic Thinking Situation: I am a regular cyclist and it is magpie-breeding season. There is a ever present danger of being attacked by these territorial birds.

Task: Determine the safest method of going through the bird’s territory and coming out the other side “intact”.

Analysis: CSIRO research has shown the magpies only attack in the breeding season while the chicks are still in the nest. Apparently their territory is approximately 200 meters either side of the nest. As a cyclist you are left with three choices: 1. S top cycling until the breeding and nesting season is over. Rejected as one has to examine RISK v REWARD; 2. P ut cable ties in your helmet. Again the CSIRO report states that this is ineffective and that for cable ties to actually deter the magpies you would need several hundred cable ties attached to the helmet.

RISK v REWARD Not a good look and therefore rejected as; a. I am yet to see a magpie with cables in their feet or beak; or b. Who want to look like a freaking jerk from Star Wars? The look is bad enough at 65 wearing cycling gear.

3. T ake the risk and ride. With the bird’s territory being approximately 200 hundred meters either side of the nest there is a 400-meter “war zone” that has to be traversed. If you hit the beginning of the “war zone”

at over 35 kmph the magpie general has time for two swoops. At the speed you are travelling you are through the zone before the third attack.

Result: This morning using number 3 above I was swooped twice on the way out and twice on the way back. Therefore I deduce that the number 3 above works. You also have the added benefit of a component of anaerobic work out as when you go into the “sprint phase” you hold your breath and ride like hell during the attack, and return to an aerobic phase when through. Cancer Ride Dear Editor As a cancer survivor I​know how tough it can be but I think kids do it much tougher so I have committed to the great cycle challenge to raise much needed funds for kids cancer. During my radiation treatment I saw a little boy of 9 or 10 present for treatment. He looked as though he was having chemo as well as radiation. No hair and a gastronasal tube in as well. All I wanted to do was cuddle him, but he looked too fragile.

It’s for kids like this that, at 65 and a cancer survivor, I’ve ​also ​had polio and a knee replacement gives me reason to do this. What I have had is nothing to what these kids go through. With today being day 1 of the ride I have opened up my account with 102 kilometres. My challenge to your readers is to open up their accounts and sponsor me via the link below.

Flag Raising Ceremony

TS Koopa, Australian Navy Cadets had a very busy weekend with the Caboolture Centenary Anzac Day commemoration/flag raising event held at Caboolture Historical Village on Saturday 5th September 2015.

This was a unique event, conducted by the 11th Light Horse Caboolture Troop & Military Museum. Association

by Australia’s young men and women who went off to the First World War and all subsequent battles where young Australians have been involved.

The main thrusts of the events were to celebrate the 114th birthday of our Australian National Flag and pay homage to those who have served under her.

Australian Navy Cadets from TS Koopa looked very smart in their Ceremonial uniforms, and were led by Commanding Officer Sub Lieutenant Jane Reptik and Cadet Petty Alasdair Hughes.

TS Koopa won the Most Improved Unit in the Sunshine Coast Flotilla and has rebuilt with cadet’s numbers now around 40 with a good spread of males and females.

The Training Ship is about to embark on the creation of a Band and Drum Corp, so musicians are needed. The

unit has been fortune ate enough to secure the assistance of an ex-Army Musician and Professional Music Teacher.

Major General Darryl Low Choy Retired (the former Head of the Australian Defence Force Cadet Policy to the salute on the march past and along with the other keynote speakers expressed their upmost gratitude for the very large cadet representation at the event.

Students Chosen for Creative Generation Awards

Bribie Island State High School students, Brooke Herbert and Elisabeth Soini, had their artworks selected for this year’s Creative Generation Excellence Awards.

The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art and Design is an annual exhibition which showcases the outstanding achievements of senior visual art students throughout Queensland.

Herbert of year 12 said Arkun was inspired by her trip to Cambodia in September last year where she worked in an orphanage for two weeks.

“This is where I met the children in the drawings,” she said.

“It was to portray how children that live in a place ridden with hunger and war could still find happiness in the little things.

“They had next to nothing and some even had HIV yet they would always smile and say thank you and never took anything for granted.”

“I wanted other people to see that materialistic items isn’t what brings happiness.”

Herbert also had her piece Arkun chosen by the University of the Sunshine Coast as one of four pieces from across Queensland that was purchased for their gallery.

“I wanted to be able to share the meaning behind the work with others

because when I look at it, it brings me so much joy and happiness.”

“I did want to take it home at first but then I realized that it was going to have a bigger impact on others being viewed in a gallery than in my house and that’s what I wanted, I wanted to cause an impact on others.”

“Knowing that there are children out there that are just grateful to be alive… it makes me feel rewarded knowing that I get the chance to share their story.”

She said the artwork was named Arkun as it is the Khmer word for thank you.

“It was a word I heard so often from the children, I thought it fit perfectly with the meaning and inspiration of the piece.”

Soini’s piece was inspired by stories from her home country, Sweden.

It was titled Sargon, the Swedish word for stories or tales.

“I have always been fascinated by Scandinavian folklore, as well as the places which inspire their creation and are the foundation to their origins,” She said.

“I aimed to capture the essence of these deep, dark, moss covered places that the sun cannot reach; places that have sprung forward these tales of hidden creatures.

“In my paintings I have left out these creatures as I only wished my artwork to explore the places which brought them to life.

“I have used oil, loose pigment and embroidery on canvas paintings and three-dimensional aspects created with the use of mixed media.”

The Creative Generation Excellence Awards are an initiative of the Department of Education, Training and Employment and are supported by the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art.

The Golden Age Day Respite Centre shares the grounds with the Golden Age Senior Citizens Association and Bribie island Meals on Wheels. The respite centre is open Monday thru Thursday 8:30am to 4:30pm each day.

The Golden Age Day Respite Centre is the largest and most experienced provider of this type of program in the Bribie island area. We have a fleet of buses which service Bribie Island, Sandstone Point, Godwin Beach and ningi.

The Centre’s purpose is to provide opportunities for social engagement and to promote wellness and independence amongst our guests. We do this by developing programs of activities and events that provide guests with a choice and variety of activities each day.

All program activities both at the centre and in the community are supported by a team of trained staff and therapists. Our team is

supported by a group of enthusiastic volunteers who come from the local community to support the guests with the various activities and events we conduct. if you are looking for an opportunity to assist your local community while enriching your own life, Golden Age could be the answer.

We are currently looking for enthusiastic and active people to join our amazing team of volunteers. As a volunteer you will spend time with our guests encouraging their social interaction and participating in activities and events. We offer an atmosphere of warmth and friendship where our Guests are encouraged to maintain independence but offered assistance as required.

We are also looking for keen gardeners to be part of the team that assists with lawn and garden maintenance here at the Centre. As part of our gardening team you will assist with mowing, weeding and general ground maintenance. All equipment is supplied including a ride on mower The centre currently has availability for those who are seeking social support or carer respite in all our social groups.

September Crime Report

This month Bribie Island police officers engaged in drug and traffic operations and boating safety patrols with rangers.

Police also visted the Bribie Island State School Fair and patrolled the Walk for William campaign which Senior Sergeant David Crawford-Raby said was well attended. Sergeant CrawfordRaby also said domestic violence was “a significant part of the stations activities” this month.

Police also kept themselves busy with 586 drivers breath tested and 77 traffic infringement notices were issues, mainly for speeding. There were also a series of complaints about theft from insecure vehicles and garages. Police urge residents to be mindful of the security of sheds, garages, boats, vehicles and trailers. Offences have been committed on Sylvan Beach Esplanade, Japonica Court and First Avenue’s industrial estate.

Charges were as follows: A 70 year old Sandstone Point woman was charged with failing to provide a specimen of breath after being intercepted for drink driving at Sandstone Point.

A 34 year old Sunnbank man was charged with public nuisance at Sandstone Point.

Tuesday 8/9/2015 A 21 year old Bellara man was charged with disqualified driving at Bongaree and the vehicle immobilised for 7 days.

A 19 year old Coomera man was charged with drink driving at Bellara after returning an alleged reading of .034%.

A 39 year old Bongaree man was charged with disqualified driving at Bongaree.

A 25 year old Bellara man was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle at Bellara.

A 35 year old Bellara woman and a 43 year old Bellara man were charged with possession of property suspected stolen and drug offences after police executed a search warrant at Bellara.

A 33 year old Morayfield man was charged with drink driving at Woorim after returning an alleged reading of .057%.

A 39 year old man and a 30 year old man, both from Redcliffe, were charged with stealing from a boat at Sandstone Point.

A 32 year old North Lakes man was charged with driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle at Ningi.

A 46 year old Bellara woman was charged with breaching a domestic violence protection order.

A 29 year old Ningi man was charged with driving whilst unlicensed at Sandstone Point.

A 50 year old Woorim man was charged wth possessing drug utensils

at Woorim. The man was also charged with breaching his bail.

A 21 year old Cleveland woman was charged with wilful damage at Bellara, together with possessing dangerous drugs and drug utensils.

A 27-year-old Morayfield woman was charged with possessing dangerous drugs at Bongaree.

A 26-year-old Caboolture man was charged with breaching a domestic violence protection order at Banksia Beach.

A 30-year-old Ningi man was charged with possessing dangerous drugs at Sandstone Point.

A 53-year-old Woorim man was charged with unlicensed driving at Bellara A 40-year-old Banksia Beach man was charged with driving unregistered and uninsured at Ningi.

A 30-year-old Bongaree man was charged with contravening a domestic violence order at Bongaree.

A 41-year-old Rothwell man was charged with driving whilst unlicensed at Sandstone Point and the vehicle immobilised for 7 days.

A 26-year-old Bongaree man was arrested on a return to prison warrant at Bongaree.

A 50-year-old Ningi man was charged with driving whilst unlicensed at Bellara.

A 28-year-old Shailer Park man was charged with drink driving after returning an alleged reading of .03% at Sandstone Point, and driving whilst unlicensed.

A 23-year-old Ningi man was charged with contravening a domestic violence protection order at Ningi.

A 45-year-old Bellara woman was fined for high end speeding after being allegedly detected driving at 146kph in a 100kph zone in Ningi by officers from the Road Policing Unit.

A 51-year-old Sandstone Point man was charged with drink driving at Bongaree after returning an alleged reading of .147%.

A 55-year-old Sandstone Point man was charged with offensive public nuisance behaviour on Main Beach.

Real Estate Raising Hope for Breast Cancer Cure

Professionals Real Estate and Bribie Island Holidays are ramping up their efforts this October to help support the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).

Currently a portion of every property sold by Professionals goes towards the NBCF but during October’s Pink Ribbon Month the team will be working harder in their efforts to eradicate breast cancer.

This month the group will be selling Pink Ribbon merchandise, holding fundraising events such as sausage sizzles, bake sales, auction nights, morning teas, gala events and encouraging community involvement with other local businesses.

Since the partnership between Professionals and the NBCF began in 2003, more than $2.4 million has been raised.

Funds have helped contribute to the foundations groundbreaking research, including a Griffith University study into the cancer fighting properties of vitamin E analogues.

This may hold the key to unravelling new treatments for breast cancer.

The study was led by Dr Jiri Neuzil and Dr Stephen Ralph.

One bill seeks to increase penalties for violations of breaches of Domestic Violence Orders and to place an offender’s past criminal history before the Magistrate at the time of hearing a matter. It also strengthens the current law that a criminal offences committed during a Domestic Violence incident can be viewed as a standalone offence separate to the act of domestic violence.

SCHOOLS CHAPLANCY BREAKFAST Master Chef, Matt Golinsky, who is known by so many in the community as the chef who lost his wife and three daughters in an horrific house fire on the Sunshine Coast some years ago, was the guest speaker at the school chaplaincy breakfast held on 11 September 2015. RECOGNITION FOR OUR RURAL FIRE FIGHTERS Rick voted to support our 35,000 Rural Firefighters who will now be able to claim workers compensation for up to 12 work related cancers that they are known to contract on the job.

The LNP voted against looking after our firefighters on numerous occasion.

In the last Parliamentary session Rick became a Member of the “Parliamentary Friend of Life Saving QLD”, in pledging his support Surf Lifesaving QLD for any ongoing funding needs

At the breakfast we raised $27,600 towards the invaluable chaplaincy work that is done in our schools.

The other Bill requires that the Coroner conduct an investigation in cases of domestic violence resulting in death. Where the cause of death is obvious, the Coroner’s investigation will focus on the agencies contacted by the victim for assistance prior to the fatal incident.

This change will help gauge the effectiveness of our support agencies in dealing with Domestic Violence matters.

Rick participated in “The Walk for William” on Bribie Island on 12 September 2015. We saw over 300 people turn out, many dressed in support as Spider Man. The community spirit flowed and a big thanks to Nikki Lovell and Family for organising this important event.

MOBILE OFFICE Rick is finding that the Mobile Office is extremely successful. Residents, being able to gain direct access to the State Member, and air their concerns, mean many of those problems are resolved with the greatest of ease.

This is in stark contrast to the previous government’s annual funding allocation. The 3 year funding grant allows the Bribie Island Community Help Association to better budget and assist those in need in our community, now and into the future.

We are now fully immersed in the profusion of Spring. As the energy of abundance and growth is working with us this season, we would be wise to make space for this blooming, otherwise we may stifle positive progress.

When we don’t take the time to discern what is ripe for letting go, a feeling of being stuck or overwhelmed can result.

Think of your life as a garden that dreams of being flourishing and vibrant, a beautiful oasis of peace. Yet facets of this garden have perhaps become overgrown with weeds, neglected old growth of bushes and trees have in places become spindly and woody, inhibiting new buds from expressing themselves. Other plants in the garden may be in competition with each other, overcrowded and fighting for space, hence neither are thriving. The soil might be depleted in certain areas, from giving without being nurtured in return.

What this garden needs is a bit of detached compassion, for new growth is not possible without some generous pruning of all that is no longer fruitful. Some parts of the garden perhaps just need resting in order to restore their natural beauty, some need to be lovingly nourished that their vitality be replenished.

There may be some difficult decisions to make about which plants you need to sacrifice so that others may survive and prosper. Other areas, however, may need a ruthless weeding to enable more beneficial plants to take root.

Greetings all you beautiful Islandfolk. Glad to be writing to you yet again! Just got back from a splendid scenic drive around the Island, all the while our Australian sunshine gleaming down on us and placing sparkles on-top of the ocean’s lip... “time to write I think”.

Every month I get inspired to share with you my thoughts on a particular subject that has seemed prominent to me. Mostly things that I’m learning myself. Funnily enough this month’s topic is about being teachable.

A famous poet once said, “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.”(Proverbs 9:9). Such a rich verse! First the poet is saying that a wise person will never think he is too wise to be taught. Then, he says that a man with an open heart is teachable and will keep on learning.

What an exclamation of humility!

There is something that I want to do for the rest of my life and that is to learn.

Learn about the world, the universe even, about people and places, love, and family, and God. I don’t ever want to get to a place where I think I know everything there is to know or think the world knows everything there is to know and stop myself from learning! If we had stopped at the wheel, we wouldn’t have gotten far.

Remaining teachable also means letting all kinds of situations and people give you wisdom. If we take off the boots of pride and put on the sandals of peace we can let everything and everyone around us teach us something valuable.

Seek advice from trustworthy people but let everything teach you. Simple things, complex things, little people, big people, experts and people with titles or babes swaddled in nappies: all of these are rich sources of wisdom.

Children for example are probably the best of the best kind of teachers.

They’re kind, non-judgemental and funny. They’re so free and they love to share. Let the littlest of things teach us the biggest of lessons. In-fact, we should just un-complicate ourselves and become like little children again because it turns out they’re the best kinds of learners too! Maybe it’s because they’re unafraid of asking questions.

Probably one of the biggest things that stop us from learning is not asking questions. If we want to receive an answer we must first ask the question.

I think the thing that stops us most is a fear of looking foolish, insignificant, un-polished or vulnerable. Like we don’t have it all together or something. But the people who are not afraid of asking questions do so because they know that the wisdom they receive far outweighs

the temporary discomfort of standing out. Plus, you help everyone out around you who too need the same wisdom and are probably very grateful that someone put their hand up. Saying, “I need help”, strengthens you and is a step to success!

So why is it so important to remain teachable? It is to grow, to bring more wonder into your world, experience new heights, and depths, of understanding.

It’s to have success and satisfaction and to give love and receive love and have life and life more abundantly. Remain teachable so you can live a more excellent way!

This is how I want to learn to live: as a child does with an open mind and heart to instruction and correction, as with reading good books not just for knowledge but for kindness and understanding. I want to listen not only to the qualified but the unqualified, unrecognized, simple things and be open to change, growth and challenges.

I want to seek answers to all kinds of questions and never stop learning, for learning and wisdom are synonymous.

Let us always be teachable, especially from each other.

Bribie Island State High School student, Matthys Grobbelaar, has become the first student in the state school system to achieve Adobe Certification.

Adobe Certification is an industry standard of excellence that communicates the expertise in leading products from Adobe.

Grobbelaar wanted to get qualifications from Adobe and recently has completed the Adobe Certified Associate in Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Dreamweaver.

Due to the combination of applications which Grobbelaar chose to complete he also gained an additional two accreditations from Adobe.

He now is an Adobe Accredited Web Design Specialist and a Visual Design Specialist.

In addition to this Grobbelaar is the first student in Queensland to achieve the Volume of Vendor certification in one year.

Grobbelaar is a current Year 12 student achieving A’s in all his subject which include: Maths B, C, Physics, Chemistry, English and Information Technology Systems.

As well as doing these subjects Grobbelaar is the School Captain, a Student Ambassador, mentor for Year 7 students and a buddy for the International Student Program.

He recently decided he wanted to complete the Microsoft Certification and was successful with Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Access.

This gave him the title of Microsoft Office Specialist.

Eric the Emu Attacked & Killed

Bribie Island residents are devastated after the local iconic emu, Eric, was killed in a dog attack.

The attack took place early last month at Red Beach in an area where dogs are required to be on a leash.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Rangers are working to find the dog and its owner.

Moreton Crime Watch said in a statement that the attack occurred around 12:30pm on Monday September 7.

“Witnesses have described how a dog, possibly a bull mastiff, killed the emu between Second and Third Lagoons, before the dog’s owner collected the animal and left the scene in a silver 4WD vehicle,” Moreton Crime Watch said.

Eric was one of the three to four emus that roam the streets and beaches of Bribie and one of the last emus in southeast Queensland.

Bribie & Wildlife Rescue Inc. said in statement that is uncertain whether the emu was Eric or one of the others.

“Eric loved cruising Banksia Beach, saying hello to the locals and sometimes scaring the tourists simply by being there,” they said.

A Queensland Parks and Wildlife spokesman said the identity and sex of the emu found is currently unknown.

Eric has even appeared in newspapers and television programmes around the world when a video of him strolling down one of Banksia’s main roads went viral.

Locals have taken to Facebook to express their grief, posting things such as “an island icon that will be missed by all”, “so sad, what a loss for us all” and “such a big majestic bird … he will be sadly missed”.

Any witnesses of the matter are urged to come forward with information.

Common Problems In Dogs

Separation Anxiety

The last few issues I’ve spoken about barking. Separation Anxiety is the most serious and stressful form of barking. There is also no quick fix in solving the problem.

When bringing a puppy home, it is important to teach him to stay home on his own. Praise and reward good behaviour on your return, that way he will associate good things and won’t be stressed on leaving.

What is Separation Anxiety?

Dogs are social, pack animals and may feel abandon when owner leaves.

The length of time of leaving is irrelevant to the dog, you can be gone for a few minutes or a full day. He may have experienced something frightening whilst you were out and so feels every time you go the experience will return.

What are the signs?

Barking is the most common sign. It

is constant and seems to be done in monotone. Other signs are escaping, howling, digging and chewing furniture, plants etc. In some severe cases dogs have been known to destroy houses for e.g. chewing on door/window frames etc. or chewing on their body parts, tails and paws being the most common.

Some dogs have chewed themselves so badly that, that body part had to be amputated.

How to fix it?

Teaching him to stay home from puppy may prevent this problem later.

If he does show signs and it can be simply that they get excited when you leave and return. It is important to ignore him both times. Reward and praise calm behaviour, not him whining and jumping on your return. Leave a radio or TV on. Keep him busy whilst out for instance, instead of feeding him kibble in the morning, scatter throughout the backyard. Give him a raw bone and in summer, freeze the bone beforehand. There are toys on the market that are designed for dogs to play on their own with.

In severe cases you may need to put him through a desensitisation programme. There’s also calming medications that may need to be used for a short while.

With the spring weather snakes are again active. Our pets don’t know that snakes are not play things, unfortunately, and are at extra risk. It’s difficult to know one snake from another.

Take a look at the photo of a recent snake I encountered while walking my dog on the beach just a few days ago. It was a 1 metre long angry snake so I caught my dog quick before he decided to rush in for a “play”. Look closely at the expanded neck; it was such an unusual snake I emailed this photo for ID. Steve Wilson at the QLD museum identified it as a common tree snake eating a frog, hence the expanded neck! What a relief, it was not a dangerous snake after all.

However, I know of a dog at Banksia Beach who recently died of a brown snake bite. It can be very difficult to identify a snake but do NOT go near a snake and do NOT harm a snake either, as snakes are native animals and as such it is an offence to interfere with them. Should your dog be bitten, apply a pressure bandage to the limb and take your pet immediately to a Veterinary Specialist Centre in Brisbane as they carry snake anti-venoms and can provide intensive care.

Many older readers of this newspaper will have grown up around Polio victims, but younger people will have no idea what Polio actually is. Australia has been Polio free for many years now, but it still cripples and kills people around the world every year. Many “seniors” have clear memories of growing up with children crippled with Polio in their school and community. Rotary International and its partners have been working hard for over 30 years to rid the world of Polio.

Rotary started its immunization campaign against polio in 1979, when there were still 500,000 cases of paralytic polio every year in over 100 countries.

In 1985 Rotary joined forces with the World Health Organization, U.S. Centres for Disease Control & Prevention, and UNICEF to mount a joint campaign to eradicate polio. When the partnership was formed, a truly epic battle was joined, and Rotary was the catalyst.

Rotary’s Gift to the Children of the World Over the past 25 years Rotary have fundraised more than $1,400,000,000

and over 2 billion children have been immunised worldwide.

There are now just a few hundred cases of Polio in the whole world in just four countries.

However, the campaign must continue as it is difficult to predict when and where the next case of wild poliovirus may strike, but it has been reduced by 99% and may be virtually eliminated within a few years.

What a victory that will be for Rotary and its partners – and for the children of the world. World Polio Day is observed on 24 October, and the Rotary club of Bribie Island want to thank the community for their support of its fundraising efforts over the years.

Thanks to Rotary’s global support the massive population of India is celebrating its fourth polio-free year.

The World Health Organization certified the South-East Asia Region, home to a quarter of the world’s population, poliofree one year ago this month.

January 2015 marked six months with no new cases of wild polio reported in Nigeria, the only remaining endemic country in Africa. While this milestone marks a major achievement for global polio eradication efforts, we must remain cautiously optimistic. Polio case numbers in Africa have decreased by 92 percent but recent outbreaks in central Africa, the Horn of Africa and Nigeria, leave the entire continent at risk and polio must still be eliminated in the other two countries where it also remains endemic.

The much Maligned Australian White Ibis

Otherwise known as the Sacred Ibis or locally as the Bribie Chook, Australian White Ibises are very common inhabitants of Bribie Island and local areas and are widespread across Australia.

Their normal habitats are the wetlands and grasslands of inland Australia but in the years after 1970 there has been a steady migration to coastal and urban areas. As they require a nesting area with an abundance of food and water, it is thought that the drought conditions of the past years have driven them to more lucrative areas. In some places their numbers are such that they are considered a pest. They like the food we like and have adapted very well to

the urban scene and are often seen scavenging around rubbish bins, land fill and even venturing into outdoor cafes to obtain scraps. Their normal diet is made up of land and aquatic invertebrates, crayfish and molluscs. They obtain mussels by digging with their long bills.

The mussels are then hammered against a rock to break the shell.

They are large white, wading birds with some black feathers and feather tips. The heads are featherless with red bands across the nape. There is a patch of bare pink skin under each wing which turns to a bright red during the breeding season. Also during breeding the normally white tail feathers turn to yellow.

Usually they breed in large colonies with other birds such as Straw-necked Ibises, Herons, Egrets and Cormorants.

The male which is slightly larger than the female picks a spot on a branch where he performs a noisy display. With this happening in a large group, the mating season can become a very rowdy affair.

When a female shows interest he bows and offers her a twig. If she accepts they preen together for a while then fly off to another location to build their nest.

Both male and female incubate the 2 to 5 white eggs for about 21 days. The chicks are born naked and fledge after about 4 weeks. Ibis rookeries are usually very noisy and smelly places which can cause some concern if too close to human habitation.

Young Ibises often leave their place of origin and may fly great distances but usually return to their place of birth when they are ready to breed, which is when they are about 3 years old. Banded birds have been recorded a great distance from their original site. One Ibis which was tagged in Victoria was later spotted in PNG. It is a pleasing spectacle to watch Ibises in flight. They fly gracefully with neck outstretched and in a rough V formation.

The Australian White Ibis is closely related to the Sacred Ibis of Africa which was a symbol of the Egyptian god, Toth, the god of wisdom, knowledge and writing. It has been depicted in

In Australia there are 95 species of Boronia, three of which are to be found on Bribie Island. Boronia falcifolia is a shrub of about 75 cm in height with small pink flowers but occasionally white flowers might appear.

In the early days Bribie residents picked bunches of wild Boronia to sell to the tourists arriving on the SS Koopa. In those times the wild flowers were more readily available before becoming more fragmented with spreading development. Even so, the conservation status of the Boronia is not considered to be at risk.

It is great to see the council planting so many flowering native shrubs and trees of late. I have seen Sarsaparilla Vine, Hovea, Wild Rosella and Hibbertia to name but a few, but I have not seen the Boronia falcifolia. The Bribie Winelander Flame Hill Vineyard, What’s Happening and More...

Last month we mentioned a couple of Queensland wineries worth visiting down the coast but the other week on one of our Sunday sojourns we found a winery closer to home in Montville. The size of The Australian wine industry in 2015 has declined by about 40,000 ha since 2008 and whilst there are still a few new vineyards being planted we are pulling up unwanted ones and in 2014 the industry crushed 1.7 million tonnes of grapes a 7% decrease on 2013 with the breakdown being 48% white wine grapes and 52% red.

The winery is situated on Western Avenue which is the road just before entering Montville from Maleney that goes down to The Baroon Dam. It is about 2.5 km’s on the right and is well worth the visit, it reminded me of many of the smaller family run vineyards in Western Australia where the employees seem more like family.

Even with the decline of production we have still seen the planting of new grape varieties such as Pinot Gris/Grigio whose production over the four years to 2014 went from 39,000 tonnes to 61,500 tonnes so one could expect that sales of some of our traditional varieties are suffering during this period.

The views are outstanding, the cellar door is well presented, and the day we were there the restaurant was full.

I tried three of the wines, the Wooded Chardonnay, the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Shiraz and all were well made wines with the grapes being sourced from their own vineyards in The Granite Belt and Montville.

There is a good selection of wines and the menu is set up to satisfy those who want to enjoy A La Carte Dining, Gourmet Plates, Picnics and Cheese and the Sunday Brunch comes highly recommended. They even offer a Charcuterie Plate on the terrace amongst the vines.

Added to this the average price paid per tonne of grapes is $441 which has gone up and down over the last fifteen years but is still a lot less than the peak of $933 per tonne in 2001 and during this period operating costs have risen making for seriously low profits.

There are currently around 2481 wine companies in Australia of which five Accolade Wines, Treasury Wines Estate, Casella Wines, Australian Vintage and Pernod Ricard have a market share of around 50%. If you add to this a few of the larger family companies such as McWilliams and De Bortoli and the top ten companies control 80% of all wines sales in Australia which leaves the other 2471 fighting for what’s left!

On the retailing front 77% of the wine sold in Australia is by Woolworths (Dan Murphys, BWS and Woolworths) and Coles (Liquorland, Vintage Cellars and First Choice Estate) but if you are thinking of buying through Cellarmasters or even Langton’s Fine Wine Auctions these companies are also part of the Woolworths Group.

On a lighter note the situation of over supply has at least kept wine prices in real terms at an all-time low and by sifting through the daily adverts in the liquor section you really can get some extraordinary bargains, last week Houghtons Classic White was $5.90, less than half price, and Jacobs Creek Reserve Range under $10 per bottle about half price at Dan Murphys, and I have a feeling this situation will not be going away any time soon.

Take overs still abound, this last twelve months have seen The Accolade Wine Group acquire Grant Burge Wines and Casella acquire Peter Lehman Wines, but mergers have been happening since the year dot which leads one to question whether the same effort goes into the label as when it was an independent winery and indeed do the grapes still come from the original vineyards, even the same districts?

The wine was originally 100% Chenin Blanc which grows very well in The Swan valley in Western Australia but nowadays is a blend. It’s a fruity dry unoaked white wine perfect for drinking on its own or enjoy with fish or chicken.

Jacob’s Creek Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Just about everywhere $10.00-$18.00 If you can get this wine for around $10 then it is a real bargain. Typical Coonawarra style with blackcurrant aromas and a full bodied palate, enjoy now or cellar happily for 5 years or more.

foot aided by mucus which is secreted to help with the action. This leaves silver trails in their wake. They can travel upside down and slide over sharp objects such as razor blades without injury. The top speed of a snail is 1.3 cm per second.

Each individual snail has both male and female reproductive organs so when they mate both parties are able to lay eggs. I was lucky enough to photograph a pair of snails mating in my garden.

About 50 to 100 eggs are laid in the soil and the small snails hatch within three weeks. They look much like their parents but with more delicate shells and take about nine months to mature.

When fully grown the shell has four to five whorls. Snails move into their shells when threatened or injured and secrete frothy mucus for protection.

To avoid drying out snails need to live in a damp environment. They are

mainly nocturnal but often venture out during the day after rain. Cold weather is not to their liking so winter sees them hibernating under bricks or in other secluded places.

Cornu aspersum are the only edible snails in Australia but must be prepared correctly before consumption. They are an excellent food source containing many vitamins and minerals and little fat.

Snail numbers are declining in Europe so some Australian farmers have begun to farm our snails for export and also for local consumption.

In ancient Greece women used snail mucus as an anti-aging agent. Japanese women were said to allow snails to crawl over their faces to obtain the mucus to rejuvenate their skin. Today the cosmetic industry is rediscovering some of the secrets of this ancient practice and antiaging products made from snail mucus can be purchased.

The European Garden Snails or Common Brown Garden Snails are an introduced species and the most common mollusc found in our gardens. Some early Europeans began a few small snail farms about 200 years ago. From these there were escapees and also some arrived via plant imports.

our gardens. The native snails have only one set of tentacles whereas the introduced species have two sets. On the end of the largest set of tentacles are the eyes. These tentacles or eye stalks are retractable and pull all the way back close to the snails head when not required. The eye stalks are also used for smell. The smaller tentacles are used for feeling and tasting.

The mouth is situated under the tentacles. They have hundreds of teeth which are attached to the tongue. During one day they eat over their own body weight.

History is a valuable commodity

N.S.W schooling taught me the first settlement in what was to become the State of Queensland was in 1825 at Brisbane, albeit a camp for Sydney’s most troublesome convicts.

However, when I came here in 1974, Bribie residents were proudly proclaiming, “Bribie is the Cradle Site of Queensland” and they explained the historic content of the claim, which I now outline.

In 1799, Matthew Flinders was the first white man and the first tourist on Bribie.

He with the ‘Norfolk’ crew camped with the friendly native people at White Patch, for a period of about two weeks.

Flinders also recorded holding a concert with the natives and his crew, thereby giving Bribie the additional honour of the first concert, in what was to become Queensland.

Twenty-five years pass after Flinders and then friendly Bribie natives befriend castaways Parsons, Finnegan a Pamphlet. These free men, spent some seven months on Bribie, until John Oxley sailed into the Pumicestone River in

MARKET REPORT The Brisbane Market remains well supplied with most lines of Fruit & Vegetables.

The standout crop in the markets is new season Australian Mangoes. Thanks to perfect growing conditions in the Northern Territory, we are experiencing an early glut of quality Mangoes. Now is the time to be enjoying them as there will probably be a little gap between the Territory fruit and the Queensland fruit.

As expected the local Strawberry season has peaked and the next month will see supplies start to diminish. But don’t worry, there is still plenty of good quality fruit available.

The warmer weather has encouraged the Northern Bananas to mature and we are now in the middle of an oversupply of fruit that is making Bananas the best value in fruit.

In the next few weeks quality Peaches and Nectarines should start to appear and by all accounts we are in for a wonderful season.

Vegetables are in their prime at the moment. We are enjoying good quality and reasonably abundant supplies of most lines.

However, as the daytime temperatures rise, some of the leafy Vegetables will start to struggle.

New season Queensland Onions are coming into season. Because they are sweeter than the Southern Varieties that we are used to, they can be enjoyed in a lot more ways (i.e. fresh in Salads and Sandwiches or even Baked as a wonderful accompaniment to your next roast diner).

Asparagus is starting to come through in good numbers and the next few weeks should see it become one of the best value Vegetables available. Don’t waste the opportunity to enjoy it at it’s finest.

Bribie Island Photography Club Our Judge for the month was John Cupper who spent a considerable amount of his spare time viewing, writing critiques and implementing his suggestions. He keeps us on our toes and I’m sure we have benefited from his recommendations.

“Roads at Night” was the theme for this month which was quite a challenge for many of us.

Gordon Bentzen with “Light Trails” was the winner with a dazzling shot of a city street taken on a slow speed to create the trails of light.

Newcomer Dea Leishmann did very well with her winning shot “Birds in Silhouette” in the Mono projected image section. She also received a second placing in the open PI section. Well done Dea! We’re looking forward to seeing more great photos from Dea. Dea Leishmann - Birds in Silhouette Vince Bowser took out first place with his mono print titled “Buddhist Monk”.

Marj Webber Marj Webber won the two open colour sections Scarab and the with “Fly eating Pollen” and “Scarab and the Wedge Pea Wedge Pea”.

Gordon Bentzen gave us more information on the workings of “Dropbox” which is a safe method of sharing files with invited group members.

Vince Bowser enlightened us on some of the useful tools in Lightroom. Lightroom is a photo processing programme that can be used in conjunction with Photoshop.

Our meetings are held at the Arts Centre in the Board Room on the fourth Monday of each month at 7pm. The first two meetings are free.

‘NAN’S’ CHILDHOOD on BRIBIE ISLAND cc1900

Inspired by the memories of his late Grandmother, Mike Harris contacted the Bribie Island Historical Society and has written the following account of his family’s time on Bribie as virtually the only residents between 1898 and 1908.

These are Mike Harris’s memories of his grandmother Florence Anne Gregg (nee Bowles) who he refers to as “Nan” in this story.

NANS STORY Nan was born on 1st November 1894 and passed away on 9th February 1990, aged 95.

Kangaroo Point, Brisbane on 25th June 1859, some months before the “Colony of Queensland” separated from New South Wales to become a State in its own right.

On 22 June 1889, Nan’s father married her mother Anne Sagely, and they had 10 children. Soon afterwards, Nan’s father who was a Fisherman and Oysterman, was offered the job of managing the Bribie Island oyster leases owned by James Clark, also known as “The Pearl King”.

In 1898, when Florence (Nan) was just 4 years old, the whole family joined their father on Bribie Island, when his occupation was officially listed as “Oysterman”, and when Oystering at Bribie Island was Queensland’s largest industry.

Nan and her family lived in a timber homestead somewhere in the vicinity of Poverty Point near the creek there.

At that time, there was only one other permanent settler living on the Island.

In spite of their isolation, it was still a very good life because Nan often spoke of the wonderful freedom and happiness, which she and her family enjoyed on the Island. They were all very happy, even though it may seem quite difficult by today’s standards.

The men toiled hard, working on the Clark Company’s oyster leases from dawn till dusk, six days a week, and the women cooked on wood stoves, washed the clothes by hand, and after dark, used Hurricane (kerosene) Lamps and Carbide (gas) Lamps as their only means of lighting.

Nevertheless, Nan and her sibling’s days were filled with wonder and great adventure as they explored the vast lonely beaches and dense bushland on the Island. Nan boasted of the great fishing and how they caught large

“Muddies” (Mud Crabs) in their dillies, and not the “nuisance Sandies” (Sand Crabs), which they tossed back. What a wonderful privilege it must have been to have lived on the Island in those days, experiencing all of its natural beauty, untouched landscapes, and pristine environments and eating the fresh and ever abundant seafood.

A small group of Aborigines existed on Bribie Island in those days and Nan said they got on reasonably well with the new settlers.

I believe they were of the Djundubari Tribe, and the government had established a Reserve for them in 1877 at Whitepatch, but it did not last very long.

The boat that picked up the harvested oysters travelled up from Brisbane every fortnight. Prior to the boat’s arrival, the workers would have the job of removing the oysters (left sealed in their shells) from the rocks, and storing them temporarily on a large movable platform that was lowered below the tide level to keep them alive, until they were ready to be packed for shipment.

At packing time, the oysters were loaded into wooden boxes with wet sawdust around them to keep them moist, cool and fresh for the trip. Packed in this manner, Nan said that the oysters would keep for at least 2 weeks for a trip to Melbourne. The oysters were sent expressly for wealthy Dinner Tables and the “Well-to-do Restaurants” of the 1890’s in Melbourne. In those days Melbourne was a rich and vibrant city made affluent by the enormous wealth derived from the Victorian Goldfields.

Nan said that the James Clark Oyster Company was a hive of activity just before the boat’s arrival, as they would raise the movable platform, remove the oysters, pack them into the boxes, and then cart them to the jetty, ready for

shipment to Brisbane before being sent south.

Nan’s father died of a heart attack in 1908, which would make him only 49 years old at the time. Nan believed his early death was caused by all the hard and exhausting work he did as a Fisherman and an Oysterman. After his death, the whole family moved to Brisbane, into a house they purchased on River Terrace at Kangaroo Point.

Nan married my Grandfather Leo Thomas Gregg on 9th December 1916 at St Joseph’s Church, Kangaroo Point.

Following Leo’s death after 36 years of marriage in 1952, Nan and her younger sister Eileen returned annually to Bribie Island with other family members on “sentimental’ holidays”. They rented a cottage at Number 6 Third Avenue, Bongaree.

On one such holiday in 1958, Nan and Eileen visited the location of the old James Clark Oyster Company leases, only to discover that their old timber homestead had collapsed and rotted away. All that was left were the rusted remains of the wood stove that her mother had cooked on. I remember Nan showing me those rusted scraps of cast-iron, which they brought back Continued next page.

SALT OR CHLORINE? Which do you really have? – A salt pool or a chlorine pool? Which would you like? Many times I hear - “We don’t have a chlorine pool – We have a salt pool”.

Or – “My pool’s going green, so I put some more salt in.”

In fact, I have seen where some people who don’t actually have a salt pool, have put salt into their pool when it has gone green, thinking that the salt will clear up the pool.

The fallacy here is that unfortunately there is a perception that salt does the sanitizing or “killing” in a salt pool. However it often surprises people to find that salt does neither.

In fact, the addition of salt when it is not required can interfere with sanitation or a green pool. The bi-product of dissolved salt when it has an electrical charge passed through it is actuallywhat does the sanitising. This bi-product is CHLORINE. So a salt pool is actually a Chlorine Pool.

Let’s look at how a salt pool works: A salt pool always has an Electrolytic Salt Chlorinator or Chlorine Generator attached.

Without this, the salt in the pool does little.

The chlorinator system consists of a power unit, similar to a very large battery charger and an electrolytic cell which is housed inside a plastic / PVC housing. This housing is usually clear so you can see the cell. The chlorinator cell consists of parallel metal plates made from titanium and coated with ruthenium and sometimes iridium. (Older model chlorinators sometimes used perforated or mesh plates, rather than solid plates).

Pool water is circulated through the filter and then through the salt water chlorinator cell / housing. The chlorinator systems power unit sends a positive and negative charge to the plates in the cell and a transfer of power (energy) is transmitted or jumps between the plates. As the water which has a concentration of salt dissolved in it passes through the plates, the energy causes chlorine gas to be produced (along with some other gases, including Hydrogen). The chlorine gas is mixed with the water as it passes through, thus continually chlorinating the water. The circulating water is returned to the pool after passing through the chlorinator. It is important to note that chlorine production only occurs while the pump & circulation system is operating.

Chlorine gas is generated at the positively charged plates on the cell while hydrogen gas is generated at the negatively charged plates on the cell. The chlorine gas dissolves rapidly into the pool water while the hydrogen gas is vented

directly to the atmosphere as it enters the pool.

So let’s go back to the question of adding or replacing Salt: Does more salt mean more chlorine? NO!!!

Chlorinators are designed to produce a certain volume of chlorine gas at a particular salt to water ratio. Changing the ratio does not change the output. In other words, a particular chlorinator may operate very well with pool water at a salt solution of 4000 parts to 6000 parts per million. The optimum is therefore 5000. Adding more salt to a pool that already has a salt mix of 4000 ppm or higher WILL NOT produce more chlorine. In fact, it can do the opposite. It can damage the chlorinator and on some chlorinators, there is a safety sensor which either shuts the chlorinator down or reduces it’s output when the salt is too high. So adding salt without knowing or testing the quantity of salt can either be of no benefit whatsoever, or in fact harmful.

Some chlorinators have low salt lights, which show a low salt reading. These are simply cheap conductivity meters which function through the cell leads. They are not quality salt meters as you will find in a pool shop where your water is tested. Many times, I have had customers who have over-salted their pool because the chlorinator warned them that the water was low in salt. There can be a number of reasons for this “false” reading including a dirty cell, moisture in the circuit boards internally, cables losing proper contact, corrosion on the cable pins and a faulty PCB. So how is salt lost & when do you add it?

Salt is really only lost through backwashing, splashing, rainfall and water top up. Therefore salt only needs to be added to the pool when it has dissipated via those means and only after your water has been tested to confirm the current salt level.

What’s the advantage of a Salt Pool?

There are quite a few advantages, the main one being the ease of chlorine supply. But let’s leave this until next months issue when we discuss this in further detail along with the differing quality of chlorinators, their reliability, costs, cost versus liquid and cost verses granular.

Over the years, Bribie Island has seen many changes. I can still remember it way back in 1953, well before the bridge was built, whilst on holidays with Nan and other family members. We caught the “SS Koopa” steamship to Bribie Island run from the Custom’s House Wharf in Queen Street, Brisbane.

Now, whenever I visit Bribie Island, I think of my Nan who lived there as a

girl so happily but in such isolation over 117 years ago. Every visit seems like a pilgrimage to a much Hallowed Place, to remember the past lives of Nan and her family and recall their wonderful and happy experiences as new settlers to the Island.

Let’s talk about trouble-shooting this week. Some of the more common problems have simple fixes. Try some of these: My internet has stopped working 1. Check your cables. Make sure they are all plugged in.

2. Look at your modem/router and make sure all of the lights are green. There should be no red lights. Your internet light should be green. If using Wi-Fi, your Wi-Fi_33 symbol should be green.

3. Power cycle your modem/router (remove the power from the back of the unit. Wait 30 seconds and then plug it back in. It should only take a few minutes to come back up. If your internet is still not working try to isolate the problem. Remove the modem/ router plug from your telephone jack point and plug your landline phone in. If there is static on the line then you may have noise that is interfering with your internet. Your telephone provider should be notified and they in turn will send out a Technician to check the copper and cabling.

If there is no static and your dial tone seems okay then call your internet provider to check for any errors to your ADSL. If they are unable to detect any issues and your lights are all green, call Bullantz and we will have a Technician connect you in no time.

2. Go to a commonly used website such as bom.gov.au If your internet is not working then your emails won’t be either. You need to refer to ‘My internet has stopped working’ (above).

CAPPED PRICE SERVICING Comparing Costs

Knowing your car’s servicing costs upfront is deeply reassuring.

But, if like most of us, you’re tossing up between a dealer and an independent service centre. comparing the servicing costs between competers can get quite complex. with many differing service schedules, it can be like comparing apples, oranges, mushrooms and lamb chops.

To illustrate we’ll look at the capped price servicing available for some popular small cars. For the top-selling corolla, Toyota prices each service at a flat $140 for the first three years or 60,000km, but requires a service every six months or 10,000km. its nearest competitor sales-wise is the Mazda 3. services are scheduled every 12 months or 10,000km, with the first six services priced at $294, $321, $294, $321, $294 and $321. over at camp subaru, the impreza’s services are scheduled for every 12,500km, with the few priced at $300, $300, $391, $491 and $307. if you plan on owning the car for three years and averaging 20,000km a year, the small Mazda will incur around twice the servicing costs of both the subaru and Toyota.

However, for someone planning on owning the car for the same period of time but only completing 10,000 km a year, the Mazda is only $120 more expensive to service than the Toyota. in this scenario the subaru is actually the cheapest to service at just $600. in most cases an independent workshop will match or beat the dealer’s caped price for the same service, but it has to be said that in a lot of cases the independent will give your car a much more thorough service. servicing your car should about keeping your car up to its best possible condition for its entire life not just the first 3 to 5 years which seems to when a dealer wants you to replace your car. The disposable world we live in i guess an independent workshop which is serious about servicing your vehicle will have all the latest equipment and knowledge to compete directly with dealers and dare i say it, a much more dedicated approach as they a not bound by one brand or by sales and commissions.

Australian Motoring Enthusiast Party

History The Australian Motoring Enthusiast Party (AMEP) was formed on 11 May 2013 in Queensland at a public meeting of motoring enthusiasts. The formation of the party followed moves by state governments, particularly in Queensland, to toughen anti-hooning and vehicle impoundment legislation.

The Australian Electoral Commission completed the registration of the AMEP on 9 July 2013.

Formation The AMEP’s structure includes State Councils and a Central Executive. The Queensland State Council and the Central Executive were formed when the party was established on 11 May 2013. At that point the Central Executive was made up of the Queensland State Council’s office bearers.

The first Annual General Meeting of the AMEP was held on 11 July 2013. The Queensland State Council office bearers were returned as the Central Executive’s office bearers.

The Victorian State Council was formed on 17 July 2013. The Western Australian State Council was formed on 23 July 2013. The New South Wales State Council was formed on 7 August 2013.

The Victorian State Council was suspended by the party’s executive in October 2013 over claims that it had set up a Facebook page without permission and had engaged in what ABC News reported as being labeled “illegal and unauthorised use of AMEP identification, confidential information, incorrect policy announcements, and the misuse of the party brand”. The former chairman of the Victorian State Council, Scott McDonald, told the ABC that it was unclear why the action had been taken.

The party endorsed Senate candidates in the 2013 Federal Election in New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia. The party has been involved in Glenn Druery’s Minor Party Alliance.

Ricky Muir represented AMEP in Victoria and won a 14.3 percent quota after preferences on a record-low primary vote of 0.51 percent or 17,122 first preference he assumed his seat on 1 July 2014. Larger parties including the incoming government are looking at changes to the group voting ticket system.

On 10 October 2013 Muir announced he would enter into an alliance with the Palmer United Party.

Muir’s senior adviser was electoral consultant Glenn Druery, however he was sacked by Muir less than a month later and was escorted out of Parliament. Muir stated that Druery did not “get along with the staff. Muir also hired former New South Wales state politician Peter Breen to advise him on legislation.

Fishing BRIBIE The weather hasn’t been the best for September as you all probably know, however there were still a few fish around being plucked out of different places around Bribie.

A beautiful example was a big Snapper weighing in at 8 kg, caught at the Curtain Reef and also a few in the passage.

The Bream are slowing down now but summer whiting are starting up at Red Beach, Eighth Avenue and at Banksia Beach too. There has also been some nice Flathead being pulled out of the water. So all in all, it hasn’t been too bad the last month considering the weather conditions, there are still plenty of Flathead and Bream at Turners Camp.

Its time to throw your crab pots in as sand crabs are starting again this month, use whole Mullet for bait, we have plenty in stock and at the right price. Wrigglers have been the best for Whiting, but they will be all over with by mid October, so don’t miss out and keep those lines wet and active.

For Bream and Flathead the best bait we have found that’s working well is mullet strips, chook gut and good old shore bait prawns, the best bait for catching Snapper at the moment seems to be with pillies.

So for an update throughout the month of October on the local knowledge of what’s being caught with what type of bait and where to go, pop in and see Trevor at the Bait and Tackle Shop,
