TODAY’S RANT! SHARED PARENTING! I am sick and tired of seeing resentment and childish attacks aimed at ex partners, especially where there are children involved.

Ironically this behaviour involves bagging the other partner, for bagging the other partner!

Alex and I met in 1988 and separated in 1998, but our relationship didn't end there.

I realised very quickly that even though we had our problems, that me complaining about him to others made me look like an absolute idiot!

Why? Because I CHOSE him and I chose to be with him for ten years!

So when I watched other people’s faces while I complained about him, I realised they were looking at me as if to say: "If he was that bad, why were you foolish enough to be with him?".

At the end of a relationship we all feel angry and hurt, but if we

We apologised to each other for our individual responsibility in the demise of our marriage, and formulated a fair, workable arrangement to do our best to save our children from the fallout

We didn't have to fight or argue because we were brokenhearted or hurt because we ACCEPTED that the only reason we were angry was because we loved each other!

Most people wouldn't admit that when you're still angry at someone, you still LOVE them!

There's no way their pride would allow that!

The acknowledgement of the new definition of love in our relationship released us to forgive and be free of the resentment we felt towards each other.

For six more years until his death!

And now?

Alex and I have been in a love relationship for now 28 years! (providing my math is accurate).

All it did was change and grow!

Our kids were able to experience that on all levels and still do!

When you look at your ex, think about what it would do to you and your children if you lost them.

Then act accordingly!

Show your children you are a combined front made up of love for them and each other!

Lower your sword!

For you are stabbing your children with it!

Then we argued over whose fault it was.

Make no mistake about that!

Galahs are attractive pink, grey and white cockatoos which have become very common to Bribie Island They are about 36cm in length and weigh approximately 337 grams which is smaller than their closest relative the SulphurCrested Cockatoo. Their call is a high pitched screech. Galahs are intelligent and social birds sometimes acting in an amusing way, getting up to tricks and performing acrobatic displays. That is probably why if a person acts stupidly he is sometimes called a Galah. They are clever mimics and in captivity can be taught to talk. In captivity they tame easily living up to 70 – 80 years, while in the wild they live from 20 – 30 years.

Breeding in South East Queensland is from July to December. Nests are built in hollow branches at least 2 metres above the ground and are lined with leaves.

Sometimes a piece of bark is torn from the tree near the nest probably to mark that the hollow is occupied. The parents pair for life but have been known to take another mate if one dies. Both male and female incubate the eggs and care for the young. Three to four white eggs are laid which hatch in about 25 days. The chicks remain in the nest for about two months before fledging. After leaving the nest the young perch near the tops of trees and wait for the parents to supply them with food. This goes on for about 30 - 40 days so the young birds are rather high maintenance for quite a while. The mortality rate of about 50% of the young birds in the first 6 months is very high.

Wild and domestic cats, raptors and motor vehicles are the major causes of death. In days gone by a great many were shot by farmers who were trying to protect their crops from the grain-eating birds.

Galahs have been known to occasionally breed with Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos both in the wild and in captivity.

In the past they mainly inhabited the plains and open forests west of the ranges but in recent years have moved into coastal areas mainly to source a plentiful supply of food and water. During the drought, flocks moved from inland areas and established colonies in several coastal communities where they had not been seen previously. Now commonly found in urban areas they forage in groups on the ground in grassy areas looking for seeds, roots, new shoots and sometimes berries. In some areas the flocks can be up to many hundreds of birds.

The word Galah is probably derived from the Aboriginal word ‘Gilaa.’

Fungus-eating Ladybird Illeis galbula

A pretty, little, 5mm, yellow and black Fungus-eating Ladybird found its way into my swimming pool. Luckily for it I rescued it early the next morning. I took photographs and then let it go.

These ladybirds as well as their larvae feed on fungi and black mould found on leaves. Their eggs are laid on the food plants so the larvae have a food source as soon as they are hatched. Some gardeners are glad to see the tiny insects in their gardens eating the damaging plant fungi while others say that they spread the fungi as they move from leaf to leaf.

There are so many different accommodations to choose from, tenting it with your own gear, little accommodation houses, glamping (Tenting it in style) resort units or humongous houses. There is a place to stay that will suit everyone.

H

ave you ever wondered what Moreton Island is like? To me it’s heaven on earth. I have been holidaying on Moreton for over 20 years and with each visit I grow fonder of its beauty, it never ceases to amaze.

I was there all last week soaking it in. In fact I’m writing this from Bulwer, a township in the north of the Island.

With 170 square kilometres to explore this sand Island, you really need a few weeks to really soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the peaceful surrounds. Of course, if you can only be here for a day, you’ll still wonder at the

white sand and aqua clean water.

Travelling by boat it takes about 20 minutes on a calm day from Bribie, I’ve seen 14ft tinnies make the trip. (That’s on a clam day) There are other options if you can’t make the trip by boat.

The Micat Ferry will take you, your car and camper across Moreton bay to Tangalooma leaving from Hemmet south of Brisbane and there is a passenger only service departing from Holt Street Wharf in Pinkenba, Tangalooma Resort is 40 klm from Brisbane and takes about 75 minutes on these

One important thing to remember is you will need a 4x4 to get around the Island, there are no made roads. If this is something new to you, I suggest you seek all the information you can get before attempting the sand tracks. Beach driving is easy on the low tide anyone can do it.

Remember if you camp, you will need a camping permit, you will also need a beach permit to drive on the Island. All can be found with a google search.

There is so much to do on Moreton, fishing is right up there with my favourite, photography, snorkelling, bush walking, sand dune riding, soaking up the sunsets or just plain old sitting back and relaxing.

of water sports, helicopter rides along with quad bike hire just to name a few. Anything you do here is done amongst the beauty of sand dunes and pristine beaches.

There are four small townships here, Bulwer in the North, a little further south is Cowan Cowan, Tangalooma is next heading south and the most southern township being Kooringal. Each little development has its own unique flavour although; they all have lots in common. Everybody knows everybody in these little communities and often lend a hand to those who may need it.

Moreton Island is solar power world! Each house has their own solar panels and battery pack to suit their own needs. The occasional generator can be heard but usually solar is used today. Ahhhh the peace is just so lovely.

I’ve put together a few facts on Moreton and hope that one day you too might get over here to relax and breathe the fresh air.

Kilometers ), Moreton Island is the second-largest sand mass in the world (after Queensland’s Fraser Island) • The world’s largest sand hill, Mount Tempest (280m) is located on Moreton Island

With the fiasco at IGA Bongaree starving thousands of dollars from the local businesses’ pockets and now the debacle at the Mitre10 roundabout.

I can’t believe that the traffic backs up to the post office in Bongaree at times, not only once but several times I have been caught up in the ridiculous amount of traffic along the water front. The simple solution was always to put a round-about at the end of Kangaroo Ave, the same as the boat ramp parking lot. One way into the carpark for IGA and the existing entrance would have been the exit.

Giving the people a stern warning and a fine who JUMP out onto the pedestrian crossing like the are made of steel should change a few of them. (Like it’s their right to be on the road before the cars) Really, some of you have no idea how hard it is to pull up a vehicle because you are in too much of a hurry to wait for an appropriate moment. There will be a fatality no doubt, but you road crossers need to STOP wait for the traffic to STOP and then proceed!

Now what about the new bike lanes? How much money has that all cost us ratepayers? Not to mention the poor shop keepers near Woollies. All so that a few Lycra loving bikers can have a lane to themselves. Pathetic! Until the bikers can contribute to the costs via registration. They want the same rights as a vehicle then they should be paying some dues in my opinion!

I’m not talking kids on pushies here, I’m talking about the real riders of fancy bikes, the serious ones out for their 40klm coffee stop. Give me a good reason they shouldn’t be paying up. Well, I’ve had my say and the thoughts of many are right here too.

About time someone in the council of designers got off their comfy seats in the office and had a long hard look at the real thing here!

Also, whilst having a barbeque at Woorim, we had left the meat unattended for two minutes and then 5 crows were attacking the meat, and later were sitting on the poles near the table. Is it getting worse because of food scraps being left and food litter along the road?

Dear Editor, I find it very difficult to believe that the aged residents in retirement village at Sandstone Point are hearing that amount of noise from hotel concerts as quoted in letter from Ned and Janet Smith. I have lived at Sandstone Point for 23 years and the retirement village would be 3 times the distance from the hotel as my home, we hear very little, and in the house NOTHING. My sister also lives very close and definitely has no problems. As for toilets don’t they know all events do this as do building sites etc.

What is the problem? Emergency vehicles always get through a lot worse traffic than this. Policing is a great thing and it shows hotel and police are on the ball and don’t put up with any non acceptable behaviour. It seems some people hate any progress or anything new . To me its wonderful there is more employment, and another local venue for the young ones to go to . The bats make heaps more noise than the concerts and they are much closer to the retirement village. I don’t mind the bats either other than there droppings in my yard. If I was younger I would be so happy to sit on the grass there in that beautiful spot and enjoy some music.

Sandstone Point Hotel is a great asset to the area. Any time a concert is on one of the reporters from your paper can come to my home or my sisters to hear for themselves that the noise is minimal.

Aged Care Information Session a Success!

Home Care Consultants hosted a free Information Session at The Bribie Island Library on Tuesday 26h April. This informative session was well attended by Bribie Island locals who participated willingly and were very open to learning about Aged Care in Australia.

Home Care Consultants presented an informative talk on the confusing maze of organizing Aged Care services to enable people to ‘Age in Place’. Ageing in Place means that people can continue to live in their homes and their community where they feel comfortable and safe.

Research has found that older people are happier if they remain living in surroundings which are familiar to them.

Home Care Consultant, Annette Whitmee explained both the structure of Aged Care in 2016 and talked about the changes that are to take place in February 2017 and July 2018. She then explained to the audience about the different levels of Home Care Services available – the Home Care Package Program and the Commonwealth Home Support Program. She spoke about the process involved in obtaining these services. These processes can be overwhelming for some people.

It was great to see new members entering the competition and taking out the honours in two categories. John Cupper one of our club members was the judge and enlightened us with a helpful and instructive critique on each photo submitted. He demonstrated how our work could be improved.

Listening to critiques on your own work as well as that of others is one very good way of developing your photography skills.

shead Gordon, our president explained how to operate Beth Mother Dropbox as well as pointing out the difference between erase, quick format and full format when deleting photos on the SD card. He also described the workings of a programme called “Recuva”, which can recover data that has been deleted from the SD card.

The meeting was concluded with questions, comments and discussion.

Our mid-month activity for the month was a night shoot on a very pleasant evening on the esplanade at Bongaree. It was well attended by members who took some great time exposure shots of the sunset then the lights, moving traffic and general shots around the jetty area.

Our meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month at 7 pm in the Board Room at the Arts Centre, Sunderland Drive. New members are very welcome. The first two meetings are free so if you are interested come along to our meeting or ring Gordon or Gail for further information.

In the last issue I wrote about what children should and shouldn’t do around dogs.

If a child wishes to approach and pat a strange dog there are safe ways of doing this: - first ask your parent or guardian’s permission then ask the owner’s permission stand still never look in the dog’s eyes put your hand out and let the dog come to you and sniff your hand if the dog approaches with a wagging tail held high then pat under the chin, never on the head if the dog approaches with slow and held low wagging tail, ears back then turn away.

Big Dogs and Little Dogs Dogs are the most diverging mammal with more sizes and shapes than any other. This is due to selective breeding both by humans and nature, but it is truly remarkable that the capacity for such divergence existed within archetypical ancestral dogs. Dogs range in size from 1 kg teacup varieties to 80 kg + giant breeds.

The archetypical dog is believed to be either a wolf or camp dog (resembling a dingo).

The size and body shape of the archetypical dog is the most healthy and the least contorted. When our pet dogs diverge from this, they are at risk of conformational health weakness. Being too big or too small leads to specific health problems. Giant breeds have a reduced life expectancy and are considered to be geriatric at age 7 years. They also suffer more instances of bone cancer, arthritis, hip dysplasia and degenerative joint disease

due to growing too fast for their frame to bear the weight causing cracking in juvenile cartilaginous joints which leads to life-long pain and problems.

After months of everyone complaining about how hot it is, we are now all whinging about the cold and dark. The thing about winter is that if you change nothing, you are almost guaranteed to gain weight, and I’m not just talking about those extra kilos of sweat shirts or long pants. Our bodies are designed to save the fat and to actually want to eat heavier, heartier meals to “save us from starvation” in winter. Ha! Chance would be a fine thing! With instant everything foods these days we have very little chance of wasting away over winter.

Exercising in winter is great as you can do it all covered up so no one can see those bits that you don’t want the world to see. Yes, if I was politically correct I would say that every bit of you is perfect, but if we are going to be honest, and well, I am, then everyone (yep everyone!) has bits they just don’t love quite as much as some other bits that they are proud of, and those bits can be hidden away while you show them whose boss and make them a little more loveable for the spring sunshine.

The other thing we seem to feel the need to do is hide away under the layers of clothing and pretend to be some sort of hairless bear. We ignore our ever growing girths because sweat pants have elastic waists and then suddenly SURPRISE! It’s spring, the sun comes out, the temperature heads upwards and we discover a whole new us has to be unveiled and magically our clothing from last spring has shrunk.

BEDWETTING AND BOWEN It can be an embarrassing, frustrating and distressing problem that affects millions of children. Bedwetting (also referred to as Nocturnal Enuresis) is the involuntary passing of urine during sleep after the age at which full bladder control usually occurs. It is more common than most parents think.

Many children are dry at night by the time they reach the age of 5 but others take longer to become dry. When children still wet the bed when they are 6 or older, parents usually start to become concerned that their child may have some kind of physical or emotional problem. Some decide not to stress about it and give it time; others will seek medical advice, take their child to counselling or use alternative therapies.

Once children go to Primary School and become aware that other kids of their age are dry at night they become embarrassed about it. Some children avoid going to sleepovers and school camps because of the fear that other kids might discover their problem. Teenagers are usually even more distressed by the bedwetting and many worry the problem will never go away. It often has a significant impact on their self-esteem.

Bowen Therapy can often assist the child to stop wetting the bed. A gentle series of moves over specific points seems to stimulate the body to engage the natural mechanisms to assist this distressing issue. We look for significant change in the behaviour after about four - weekly treatments, however some children may require more time.

surely it is easy to know what is true or what is untrue? however, the difficulty lies in how we perceive truth. one of the ways we perceive reality and thus come up with our version of the truth is by using our sense perception to guide us and so if our sense perception is variable then we may each infer a different reality. A physiological example is that each of us may ‘see’ the same colour differently due to the uniqueness of our eye retina.

Another example is we may behold what we ‘see’ as smoke on the horizon, as we often do here on Bribie looking to the mainland and we may then interpret that to mean there is a fire, however upon coming closer to the source we find it is just a dust storm or a cloud. This shows us that the way our minds compute sensory information is also based on individual past experiences of what we may expect to be true.

Friends Forever…

Brrr Bribie Islanders, can you feel the nip in the air? It’s getting a bit chilly out! Hope you’re keeping your extremities warm and your insides warmer with good doses of ye old pumpkin soup and chicken broth. Don’t be afraid of getting a bit of fresh air either, it’s tempting to want to stay indoors, but we live in the Sunshine Coast and even in winter, the outdoors is the place to be! According to Davis (2014) exercising in the Winter actually boosts your immunity! But please don’t if you are already sick. That is when you stay home and rest.

Talk to the doc about that matter. But if you can, the Vitamin D (sunlight) you will get also fights depression plus you can combine this with exercise and make some edible vitamins by digging into some Winter gardening! Our climate is so suitable for this kind of thing in the winter. These are the benefits of living in the sub-tropics!

So besides sunshine, scarves, thoughts of gardening (but not actually getting into it yet), plus a whole bunch of other preoccupations, I’ve been thinking a lot about friendship.

You know, life is big adventure. And if you watch adventure movies, you know that there are parts that are dark, scary and downright cold. With a few cobwebs and bats and creeping things thrown in!

But those parts are just that, parts of the adventure.

There are times in your life where things just don’t seem to go smoothly and it’s as if everything is going topsy-turvy at once! Maybe you’re in that situation right now and there is pressure from all sides and you just want to escape. Give up. Give in. Run. But there’s something in you that wants to fight. To not give up, but press on until you get past that rocky road and into the light! I like that part of you. It’s awesome. But just like a fire, it needs to be fanned and be fed by the right kind of fuel to come alive. This is where friends, any not just any friends, but good friends come in. Cheesy. Yes. I put the Chee in cheesy. But powerful. As Helen Keller put it, “Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light”.

Lately I have been mesmerized by the generosity of the people I see in and around my own life. That is, generosity of the heart. Never before have my eyes been open to just how caring and understanding people can really be for their friends; one such a thing is richer and worth more than all the gold, rubies and treasure in the whole world. When times get tough but someone is they’re waiting to take your hand and walk through the sludge with you, yep, that’s nothing less than pure love. These kind of people are invaluable. Their hearts are deeper and wider than the ocean itself!

People like this can walk into your life just like that.

More often than not though, a certain way of living draws them to you. A way of living that guards your heart. To me that means being open, loving and kind to most everyone that walks across your path, but choosing carefully the people that will sit in close to the inner part of your life. Close meaning near enough to have influence. One of my most favourite authors has to be Kris Vallotton and I love this quote of his: “We need to hang around people that pour water on the fires of our fears, and throw gasoline on the passions of our dreams”. Yes! The people we let on the inside of our lives must do this. It’s these kinds of people that are true friends, friends who will walk through the dark with you with your hand in theirs as well as celebrate your success with you with your hand in theirs.

I think I could just go on and talk about this topic forever, but I will leave with one more thought.

People who will be there for you no matter what are incredible gifts – what are you going to do to be that for someone else?

FOODS THAT YOU CAN RE-GROW YOURSELF AFTER BUYING THEM. Did you know that there are foods that you purchase every day that you can easily grow from cuttings? Here are a few vegies that you can plant and have on hand for whenever you need them. I am almost never without Spring Onions, so easy to plant in a pot and have outside the kitchen door.

Spring Onions, Leeks and Shallots

Spring onions are so easy to grow. When you buy a bunch of spring onions cut the bottoms off, leave about 10cm. You can chop the rest and put into the freezer for use in any cooking you like.

Simply put the ends into a pot or vegie patch leaving about a 5cm space between them. I guarantee they will be growing faster than you can use the one you put in the freezer.

Celery, Bok Choi, Lettuce & Cabbage Similar to leeks and spring onions, these vegetables will grow from the white root end.

Cut the stalks off as you normally would, and place the root end in a shallow bowl of water- enough to cover the roots but not the end of your cutting.

Place it in a sunny window position, occasionally spraying your cutting with water to keep the top most.

After a few days, you should start to see roots and new leaves appear. After a week or so, transport into soil with just the leaves showing above the level of the soil. The plant will continue to grow and within a few weeks it will be harvest time!

Ginger, Galangal and Turmeric

Ginger isn’t just an absolutely delicious root, but it’s also a wonderful herbal remedy for sore throats, lung infections, and inflammation. You can take any spare piece of fresh ginger root and plant it in soil. If the buds are facing upward, new shoots and roots will grow in around 7 days. You can pull it up and use it, just make sure to save some of the rhizome for re-planting!

Our regular events on the calendar continue including Bingo, Wii Nintendo, Knitting and Craft Groups, Floor Golf, Bowls and Darts, card games and computer games. Each Tuesday an exercise class is held for our older guests while our young people have music, drama and dance classes twice each week. Thursdays we head out for picnics and coffee afternoons at various locations around the local community. Outings are usually held on the fourth Wednesday of

each month and are all inclusive of morning tea, afternoon tea, lunch and transport. This month we head to the Solander Bowls Club and next Christmas in July at Caloundra RSL. Our Carer Support Group meets on the third Wednesday of every month and is a great opportunity for carers to meet up with others and have a well-earned break from their role.

Our next meeting will be at The Deli, Bongaree and we kick off at 12.30pm.

Come along and meet people who understand what you as a carer for your loved one, are experiencing, share you stories and find out about help that’s available.

The Centre provides group social activities for those over 65 years, those who have dementia specific needs and younger people with a disability aged between 18 & 65 years. Transport is available to and from the centre if you live in Ningi, Sandstone Point, Godwin Beach or on Bribie Island.

Some of Australia’s most unusual exotic fruits are in season with the changing autumn weather a great time to try something new as more common fresh produce supplies fluctuate in volume and price from unpredictable weather.

In the vegetable aisle, expect some top quality Asian vegetables, beans, beetroot, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, capsicum, eggplant, silverbeet, onions and sweet potatoes at a reasonable price.

Potatoes and pumpkin are plentiful, they are of top quality and are cheap.

However, the extremes of cold night time temperatures and warmer than usual days in the harvest areas has seen reduced supplies of broccoli, carrots, celery, fennel, leeks, parsnips, snow peas, squash, sweet corn and zucchini with all firm in price.

Expect to pay more for asparagus, which is imported at this time of year.

The warm days make salads a good option although tomatoes are a mixed bag of quality and price. Most are firmly priced with the exception of cheaper priced cherry tomato punnets and the small Roma variety. Cherry tomatoes have more vitamin C than most other varieties.

I was fortunate enough to catch a very busy Ross Hopper from Maleny Dairies for an interview this week. With the attention from the media regarding the dairy industry, we are all beginning to make conscious choices in support of our dairy farmers.

Ross Hopper: “Personally, our eight farmers that supply us have a future. Listening to those farmers in the wider community throughout the region, their days are numbered if nothing changes”.

“Do you feel there is a strong movement with consumers towards buying Australian, supporting independent farmers and “growing our own?”

“How do the recent developments in the dairy industry effect your business? Positively and Negatively?”

Lettuce is firmly priced, with the darker leaves the most nutritious.

Ross Hopper: “Positively the attention from the media is bringing more business to us. No negative effects. This current climate is enhancing our already successful business.”

Chestnuts have made it onto your local fruit shop’s shelves and although not as commonly eaten in Queensland, are well known in the southern states for their sweet and nutty flavour, particularly after being cooked. They contain little fat or oil and have small amounts of protein.

“Do you believe that consumers tend to confuse the Australian Dairy Farmers Corporation with independent Australian dairy farmers, thinking they are one and the same?”

In the fruit section, the furry red rambutan has joined a range of other exotic fruits including rosellas, quince, dragon fruit, guava, black sapote (chocolate pudding fruit), feijoas, persimmons, pomegranates and custard apples.

Ross Hopper: “A big yes. It’s good marketing on their behalf”.

Avocados have become affordable and are excellent to team with reasonably priced mixed leaf salad, cucumbers, shallots and a variety of herbs which are all plentiful this week.

The best fruit bargains include bananas, limes, mandarins, navel and Valencia oranges, New Zealand kiwifruit including the sweeter gold variety, pineapples, passion fruit and pawpaw, with the red pawpaw variety the tastiest.

Blueberries and stonefruit from the USA are expensive, although some early Australian peaches are available many weeks earlier than expected.

Royal gala and pink lady apples are the best eating in the firmly priced apple category.

Strawberries have begun many weeks earlier than expected, are of good quality but firmly priced, as are lemons, honeydew, pears and average quality raspberries costing you more.

Average quality blueberries are expensive but expect the prices to fall in the weeks ahead as their season is expected to begin in earnest from June to April.

“If you had an opportunity to inform the public of a truth about your industry what would you relay to them?”

Ross Hopper: “All I wish to portray is that farmers aren’t paid the correct price for raw milk. The major processors aren’t paying a sustainable price for raw milk”.

“How would you persuade the public that cheaper isn’t necessarily better?”

Ross Hopper: “Cheap and quality don’t go together.

You get what you pay for”.

Ross Hopper: “Yes! Definitely! It’s good that the media are portraying that and bringing it to public’s attention.”

“What is the most wonderful thing about the lifestyle you and your family lead?”

Ross Hopper: “It’s makes us happy to put a smile on other people’s faces.”

“Is there anything else you would like to share with the public?”

Ross Hopper: “Only that we are looking forward to the future and taking on our 9th farmer shortly.”

BRIBIE BUTTERFLY VOLUNTEERS The dream of a new butterfly house is becoming a reality. Thanks to the receivership of a government grant and the great support of our council and community, construction has begun at the new site on First Avenue, Bongaree. For almost 3 years we have been operating a small butterfly house at a private residential property at Banksia Beach.

The entire project is run by a dedicated group of Volunteers which, like the project and butterflies and caterpillars – is growing every day.

We have relied on the generous donations of people’s valuable time, resources, talents and dollars to run the project. We are so excited to announce that we have been successful in receiving a government grant to the value of $35 000!! Our local member for Pumicestone – Rick Williams, came over to the existing butterfly house to present the BIG cheque.

We are so grateful and aim to open the new butterfly house debt free. All profits generated when we open will go to charity.

The new site has been levelled, security fence erected and we are currently building the butterfly house. We want to build the butterflies new home

first so we can establish the gardens ready for the insects to move in. The second stage will be building the breeding laboratory. This is where we will breed the caterpillars, which will be on display as you enter the Bribie Island Butterfly House.

We want all Bribie Island residents to catch our vision. This project will be a unique attraction for all visitors in South East Queensland and beyond. It will generate more business for our local community and provide a quality education for people of all ages. We encourage our local schools to get involved also. We are always looking for more Volunteers. If you can’t donate financially, we appreciate the donation of your time and help. We are especially looking for creative, practical people to help build the unique features in the butterfly house.

While it’s easy to overlook those four patches of rubber called your tyres, performing a few simple checks can yield better fuel economy and improved vehicle handling. since most tyre damage and wear is a result of driving on tyres that are improperly inflated.

Maintaining proper tyre pressure is important for many reasons other than reducing the potential of a flat tyre or a blowout. in order to achieve optimum handling from your vehicle, from everyday driving to making emergency maneuvers, tyre pressure needs to be at the proper inflation level. even a tyre that doesn’t appear to be low on air can result in reduced vehicle handling and excessive tread wear. tyres that are not at the correct air pressure will also increase the rolling resistance (the friction that occurs

when an object rolls) of the vehicle.

Under-inflated tires, for example, result in increased rolling resistance and therefore require more energy (or fuel) to move the vehicle, which negatively impacts fuel economy. according to american research, keeping tyres inflated properly improves fuel economy by approximately 3.3 percent. tyres that are over-inflated result in reduced levels of handling performance because less rubber is in contact with the road. improper inflation puts unnecessary stress on your tyres and can result in excessive or uneven wear. When this happens, it compromises the ability of the tyres to perform, and often results in premature tyre wear-and the necessity to replace them sooner than expected.

ROMANTIC REFLECTIONS OF BRIBIE ISLAND HISTORY

The Bribie Island Historical Society (bribieislandhistoricalsociety@gmail.com) have provided the following extract from an article in the Brisbane "Daily Mail" of 22 June 1919. Written by Archibald Meston a prominent explorer, anthropologist, journalist, naturalist, all round athlete and politician. Written almost 100 years ago the style reflects his romantic interpretation of the early days of settlement on Bribie Island, and the pioneers who first set foot on these shores.

Structure on Left is now the site of BLUE ANCHORAGE Restaurant Bribie Island is coming rapidly into the limelight in recent years, and emulating Venice in rising like "another Sea Cybele fresh from the Ocean," not with a tiara of proud towers and gorgeous but with dainty cottages and proud villas, and the quaint romantic cubby houses and palaces, architectural "cosies" of those who escape from the madding crowds’ ignoble strife to listen to wild waves are saying, and the incessant sobbing of the sea, and the voices of many what the winds playing Eolian music on the harp of grey gums and brown bloodwoods, and white barked Structure on Left is now the site of Melaleucas, and sombre cypress pines, and hear Kendal’s "Wail in the Native Oak" along the margins of the ever melodious sea.

In my many interviews with Tom Petrie, I may or may not have introduced the identity of Bribie, but on more than one occasion we discussed the island itself and the days when Petrie established an aboriginal settlement at the "White Patch" which the blacks called "Taranggeer," and where a highly intelligent Government subsequently surveyed a township! Petrie could not induce the blacks to stay there, and finally threw over the whole business as the Colonial Secretary of the day treated the blacks too meanly, and Tom was always a loyal friend to the aboriginal. His reports are still available, being official records.

Bribie, originally, in addition to the aboriginals, was chiefly inhabited by wallabies, kangaroos, snakes, and five varieties of frogs, estimated at ten millions. The aboriginals belonged to a tribe called "Joondoburri" who spoke a dialect called "Dondoo," in which the negative was "Nhulla," and when Flinders landed there in July, 1779, there would be about 600 on the island. They were a fine athletic and warlike race, and a terror to the mainland blacks. From the sea they drew unlimited supplies of fish, dugong, turtle, crabs and oysters, the chief vegetable supply coming from lily roots and seeds, yams, and the bulbs of orchids.

Bribie Island, the "Yarroon" of the Joondoburri, emerged into the light of history in that memorable July of 1799, when Flinders, the immortal navigator, rowed up in his whale boat to the part now known as "Skirmish Point." Taking Flinders’ own report, the transaction there was not creditable to himself and party. Some misunderstanding arose, although the blacks were friendly, and the boat backed out from the beach. The blacks ran out in the surf to try to induce them to return, and were fired at, the first Queensland aboriginals ever shot by white men, though Cook fired some small shot at a couple of Cooktown blacks.

Flinders went over to the island of St. Helena, Noogoon, landed there, went across to the mouth of the Brisbane River, named the Fishermen’s Islands, missed the river, went back to Bribie Passage, which he called the Pumice Stone River, and beached his sloop to be cleaned on the beach of the White Patch. While this was being done he went away with some of his men and landed near the site of the present Donnybrook, walked across to Beerburrum, ascended that historic mount, went across to the east side of Tibberawaccum ("Jeeboragaggalin") pronounced it inaccessible, and returned to the White Patch. He was, therefore, the first white man who ever ascended one of Cook’s Glass Houses, named by Cook in 1770, or 29 years before Flinders.

In Bribie Passage he shot 18 swans, and saw his first dugong, which he took to be a species of sea lion, and saw a dugong net with strands an inch in circumference. He fired three musket balls at one, and Bungaree, a Sydney black, who accompanied him, threw his woomera spear at another. The old spherical musket ball of those days would not have gone through the hide of a dugong.

During his stay in Bribie Channel, from August 20 to 30, Flinders had a friendly interview with the Bribie blacks, the Joondoburri, who sang musical and pleasant songs. He records three of the men’s names, which were Yeewoo, Yelyelba, and Bomarrigo. They wore hair belts round their waits, hair fillets on the forehead and upper arm, and their canoes were made from sheets of stringy bark. Their huts of teatree bark were 12 to 15 feet in length, and many were in three sections facing each other, with one fire serving all three. In one hut they saw a fishing net quite as well made as if done by a European seine maker.

History is silent about Bribie for another 24 years, until Surveyor General Oxley, on his return from Port Curtis, ran in with his cutter Mermaid, and anchored opposite Toorbul Point. Among a lot of advancing blacks was one white man who proved to be Thomas Pamphlet, who on December 2, 1823, piloted Oxley into the Brisbane River, which he had seen when trying to make his way south towards Sydney or Port Macquarie.

Pamphlet was one of four men who had been driven off the coast of Illawarra, out of sight of land, and thinking they were south of Sydney, came north until they landed on Morton Island.

The other three were Parsons, Finnigan and Thompson, but Thompson died on the way and was thrown overboard. The Morton Island blacks treated them well, passed them to the Amity blacks, who took them across in canoes and landed them on the north side of the Brisbane River, from whence they finally reached Toorbul Point and Bribie Island, where the blacks treated them very generously, although the shooting by Flinders must have been well remembered by the elder men.

On the day after Oxley found Pamphlet, his mate, Finnigan, appeared on Toorbul Point, and Oxley sent the whale boat to bring him over.

Both Finnigan and Pamphlet had seen the Brisbane River, and both went with Oxley to show him the locality, the honours of discovery being equal. Pamphlet had been five months with the Bribie blacks, spoke of them in high terms, and left them regretfully. All those four castaways were liberated convicts, and apparently rather rough types, as the three who survived were frequently quarrelling, and one of them tried to kill the other.

It is remarkable that Oxley, in his journal, makes no mention of those two men who showed him the Brisbane River, and we are entirely indebted to a young man named Uniacke for an interesting narrative of Pamphlet and Finnigan and their life among the blacks. They saw fights and corrobberies and acts of cannibalism, also a fight with spears between two men in a 24-feet ring, where one killed the other.

Uniacke says the main camp was at the White Patch. Several men were killed in one general engagement, and were roasted and eaten by their own tribe. Yet those cannibal wild men treated Pamphlet and Finnigan probably much better than they deserved.

In recent reviews we have covered the introduction of new grape varieties into the Australian Wine market. Whilst many of these varieties have been around for ever in imported wines many of our growers have decided to add them to their local grown varieties and have given us a lot more to choose from. Last month at The Beefsteak and burgundy Dinner we looked at a few of our “forgotten” varieties such as Riesling, Semillon, Grenache and Durif and they proved to be absolute winners, however there is one variety that hasn’t been forgotten just not given the respect it deserves in recent years that is Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the most noble of red wine grapes grown around the planet, it is the backbone of the great Bordeaux wines of France, the outstanding reds of The Napa Valley in California and until the 1980’s was also the most popular red wine consumed in Australia before we jumped on The Shiraz train mainly driven by our export drive. Working for Penfolds in this period I often found that the Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon seemed to be more elegant and to have more class than the brooding Grange and fortunately working for the company had many opportunities to sample the wine in the offices after work on a Friday night when the sales meeting had

concluded.

A straight Cabernet Sauvignon is indeed a noble grape but needs time before revealing its true elegance and patience is required by cellaring or looking up and down the shelves as at least four years in the bottle will reward the drinker with a wine of grace, so look for a vintage showing 2012 or less, I am sure Dan Murphys would have some ten y.o. vintages on their shelves and probably at a reasonable price.

Cabernet Sauvignon was the darling of wine growing area such as McLaren Vale, The Barossa, The Coonawarra, Margaret River, The Clare Valley and parts of Victoria including The Yarra Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon also blends well with Merlot which softens the wine and can be enjoyed much younger and The Bordeaux wines from France which consist of the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot command prices which can sell for prices in the thousands of dollars per bottle and age for many many years. In Bordeaux there are rules and regulations which are there to ensure the quality of the wines from this region always reach certain standards weather permitting. The vines have to be planted at certain intervals, the buds per vine are controlled to ensure that quality not quantity is achieved. As the soil is

very gravely and can be subject to low rainfall the roots of the vines tend to go deep and this results in grape vines that fight for survival and the wines produced are much sort after.

Cabernet and Cabernet blends whilst second to shiraz sales are still pretty strong but that seems to be due to a loyal following and has a strong market in the over $20 per bottle market however there are still good buys to be had.

Consider a Cabernet from Taylors in The Clare Valley. Penley Estate, Wynns, Zema Estate, Brands Laira, Hollicks and Parker from The Coonawarra. Woodlands, Vasse Felix and Houghton from Western Australia. d’Arenberg, Shingleback, Saltrams and Penfolds from South Australia.

In a good quality Cabernet look for aromas of blackcurrants, cassis, capsicum and dark fruits and even a hint of mint especially in wine from The Coonawarra. This area is considered to best known for the high quality Cabernet grown in Australia and it all comes from a small patch of red earth known as Terra Rossa which is 15 kilometres long by 2 kilometres wide in an area known as The Limestone Coast in South Australia. next century by the Redman Family and then given a renaissance by Wynns in 1951 who remain the largest wine growers in the area.

The Coonawarra also produces very good Shiraz, Chardonnay and Riesling especially from Wynns, when on special The Wynns Shiraz is outstanding value.

For those on a tight budget don’t despair Houghton Cabernet Sauvignon is generally around $10 or less on special but McWilliams Hanwood Cabernet Sauvignon always delivers bang for your buck.

May Crime Report Officers conducted patrols of Main Beach throughout the weekends with rangers from the local Queensland Parks and Wildlife Office. Bribie Island Police and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service have a close working relationship on Bribie Island, and work co-operatively to progress traffic management and public order objectives in the parks area. These patrols will continue into the future, particularly as the off-road area is becoming increasingly busy on weekends and during the school holidays.

On Wednesday, May 11 officers from Bribie Island performed a traffic operation, specifically targeting speeding vehicles in the Bongaree area in response to a number of complaints received from residents. Several drivers were fined, and enforcement activities as part of the stations efforts towards reducing road trauma will continue in the coming months, with several other operations planned. Officers from Landsborough Road Policing Unit also conducted several patrols of Bribie Island this week, and fined a large number of drivers. RPU officers regularly patrol Bribie Island to assist local police in conducting traffic enforcement.

On Friday night, May 13 police from Bribie Island engaged in a liquor and public order operation across Bribie Island, conducting walk-throughs and inspections of licensed venues, and monitoring patron activity in the vicinity of those premises. Generally the evening was incident free, and similar activities will be conducted in the near future.

Officers from Bribie Island attended the MixFM concert event at the Sandstone Point Hotel and conducted an external operation to the event with the assistance of the water police, Queensland Transport and Main Roads, the Road Policing Unit and Caboolture Police. The event was largely trouble free. Police will continue working with the event organisers regarding public order and traffic management issues for upcoming events.

Officers from Bribie Island participated in a number of operations across the division targeting drug and drink driving, drug offences and offenders wanted on outstanding warrants. Additional checks on bail offenders also continued, with several breaches detected for follow-up.

A large amount of dangerous drugs have been seized by the station this year. In many cases offenders were charged as a direct result of information received from the local community that enabled officers to execute search warrants on addresses in our area.

Several search warrants were also executed in connection with drug offences. Dangerous drugs and stolen property were seized during these raids, and a number of matters are now under investigation. The presence of drug related activity in our community is always concerning and I encourage anyone with information that might assist police in identifying drug offenders in our area to either contact the station or Crime Stoppers. You can remain anonymous if you wish.

traffic infringement notices issued, mainly issued for speeding particularly in school zones and areas for which complaints have been received, using a mobile phone, seat belt offences, registration offences and in response to parking complaints. There were also several learner and provisional drivers fined for breaching their conditions. Enforcement of these offences will continue, and I encourage all drivers to drive safely.

Stop Domestic Violence

Officers from Bribie Island have relaunched the stations domestic violence initiative ‘Stop DV’. The aim of ‘Stop DV’ is to inform visitors or new residents in the area about local support services. Officers will be delivering drink coasters with local domestic violence support service contact information to businesses across the division. They will also deliver posters promoting the initiative over the coming weeks. The station has received ongoing support from the Bribie Island Neighbourhood Centre and Caboolture Domestic Violence Service to make the initiative possible.

Officers from Bribie Island attended 29 domestic violence incidents during May, resulting in six contravention of order complaints and seven applications for protection orders being made. Other matters were referred to counselling services. Domestic violence is a serious issue. If you suspect someone in your neighbourhood or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence and needs assistance, please do not hesitate to call the station or dial Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.

Coffee with a Cop

Our Coffee with a Cop event at the Bribie Island Shopping Centre went well this month with a large number of people dropping in for a chat. This is another successful initiative for the station and it was very pleasing to see such a positive response. Further Coffee with a Cop events will be arranged in the coming months.

Please indicate if you prefer to walk or are bringing your own buggy or if you intend to hire a buggy at the course or pro-shop. The hire of buggies is between the player and the hirer.

The cost of the competition is $15 per player and $17 at resort courses. Most games are played on Mondays with a shot-gun start at 8.30am (Bribie Island 9.15am).

Senior players, 50 plus, you are invited and welcome to play at any of the 10 golf clubs in the Glasshouse Mountains Zone and especially with the Glasshouse Mountains Zone Senior Golfers Association (GHMZSGA). They have been organizing competitions for senior golfers since 1979 when a group of golfing gentlemen from several Zone clubs formed the Seniors Golf Association and now are in their 37th year.

The Association has an executive of three, a president, a vice-president/treasurer and a secretary/recorder and with two delegates from each club has a good working committee in place and is able to run the Association’s 16 competitions and senior pennant fixtures each year.

Over the 36 plus years our Seniors Association has enjoyed and helped our Zone clubs and courses to grow to the high standard they present to golfers today. These clubs now have hundreds of players at their clubs and the Seniors have some great days out at these venues.

The 10 golf clubs in our Zone cover a wide area and all have different aspects that will test your golfing ability when you play there. Visiting golfers from outside the Zone area are welcome to join in on our Zone days and are able to win nearest the pins and be in the ball run-down.

To organize playing at these venues, each club’s

In previous issues, we spoke about the importance of the skimmer box in the cleaning process and discussed suction pool cleaners. This issue, we’re discussing the ROBOTIC POOL CLEANER As previously mentioned, the suction cleaner uses the existing Pool pump and filter system to operate the cleaner. Awesome! That's one word that pretty much sums up the last months weather. Warm days, cool nights, light winds and predictable weather systems. Due to the lack of rainfall early on in the year, and the lack of big swells, and strong currents, over the last two months, has made for exceptionally great visibility throughout the bay and passage.

Over the next month we will also see a big drop in the water temperature, as cooler water moves our way.

Generally certain species that were thought to be more abundant in certain season’s, are now being taken throughout the entire year. With a

steady current always pushing warm water down, or cooler waters up the coast, there is always a steady flow of fish coming past our coastline. The big shoals of reef dwelling species also move around a lot during the year’s currents. I believe a lot more than we think. The whales too will be due over the coming weeks, off the coastline as well.

Before heading outside/offshore fishing, it really pays to make sure all your vessels equipment and safety gear is working and currently in date. Batteries, lights, fuel systems and electrical equipment should all be regularly checked and serviced.

Knowing weather conditions, logging on with the coastguard/marine rescue, and letting family know where you are heading and when you are planning on coming home is also strongly recommended. When fishing at night in the shipping highway, always be aware of container ships approaching, or trawlers working throughout the same area. If planning on anchoring up for a couple of hours sleep, set a 40 to 60m drift alarm on your GPS, just in case. The 100m line from Deep Tempest through to Wide Caloundra, producing some quality Snapper, Pearlies and Trag Jew. There's also been some monster AJ's following the Pearly schools. The shallow water reef systems will really start to fish well over the next couple of months. There will be numerous species to be caught in all the local systems. As the water temperature drops, these areas will hold some real quality fish schools. The bay has still good numbers of School Spotted Mackerel and Tuna. They're pretty much scattered throughout the Bay and Caloundra Shallows area. 20-30g metal slugs, and 4-5 inch plastics are working well. The Passage too has seen good schools of Long tail and Mackerel feeding on the bait fish schools. The bigger Snapper and Jewies have also shown up around Redcliffe Headlands area and Inner Ledge areas. Taylor have also shown up with quite a few nice fish getting taken up the Passage, Moreton

Island and Scarborough area. Good quality Muddies have been caught throughout the entire Passage, the Caboolture River, and the Pine River systems. Size and numbers are great. Sandies too, have been very prolific and will still be caught in good numbers right throughout winter. The big tiger squid have been about in good numbers and size. Pink jigs on clear, quiet nights with white lights is what works. The Winter Whiting also have shown up in good numbers, throughout all the usual spots. Cockle banks, Sandhills, Deception Bay Green and Gilligans Island are all producing lots of fish. All in all, the next couple of months should be a great time to plan a camping trip or a fishing trip. And enjoy what the area has to offer. "Tight lines!"

MAGICKAL EARTH BRINGS NEW SPIRIT TO MATTHEW FLINDERS ART PRIZE IN 2016 Rebecca Devitt showed early signs of her lifelong quest of self-exploration when at 7 she made and bottled floral woodys (essences) and sold them to neighbours and friends.

Now the creator and director of Magickal Earth, a combined on-line business of healing, art, crystals, jewellery, self-discovery and a soon to be established artists creative support agency, she is the major sponsor of the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre Matthew Flinders Art Prize this year.

The prestigious and popular competition is open for entries in all art genres until June 24. The exhibition of same will be at the Arts Centre from July 8 – August 6.

Rebecca, from Banksia, sees a neat fit between her creative direction at Magickal Earth and the Arts Centre for their mutual interest in and support of a community’s intuitive creativity. An intuitive life coach, she has been exploring many aspects of self-care and body consciousness for some years, studying and becoming a Reiki master, as well as other such sciences and practices as kinesiology, self-healing and meditation. She is a keen student of motivational author and speaker Louise Hay‘s wisdom on how emotions rule people’s lives.

As a home-schooled, eldest child of six, Bec acquired a big vision of life early and a precocious thirst for knowledge about how the world worked and her place in it. She read voraciously from an early age and her inquiring mind sought answers to everything.

“I was the one pulling apart watches to see how they worked,’’ she laughed.

Now that busy, inquiring mind seeks to help people find their true inner feelings as they go about their work and play.

She says the world is geared towards the technical execution of tasks, but doesn’t encourage people to trust their gut. People are feeling disconnected and their isolation brings feelings of low selfworth, anxiety and depression.

“I want to be the change,’’ she says. “I want to help people find the tools to do what they love.’’

Her on-line store Magickal Earth Shop sells Bec’s talisman and “power piece“ jewellery made from metals like copper, silver and gold, and also resin and polymer clay, and essential oils, healing essences, candles and prints of fantasy art by Bella Florentine and Melissa Richards.

Her Magickal Earth plans include an online artists’ community to be established in the coming weeks, which people join to share and enhance their creative energies and work towards their optimal artistic wellbeing..

“Discover You’’ is her message and her greatest wish is to help guide Magickal Earth followers to fulfilment in a creative life, whatever their field.
