This has been a very hard time for everyone at the moment, all I can ask is that you be kind to all, don’t panic buy leaving everyone else with nothing, check on your elderly neighbours to ensure they are ok and shop locally and support our small businesses so we can all stay afloat in these uncertain times. BODY IMAGE Body image is the perception that an individual has of their physical self and the thoughts and feelings that result from that perception. The thoughts and feelings can be positive, negative or even both. They are

Healthy outlook and behaviours - it is easier to lead a balanced lifestyle with healthier attitudes and practices relating to food and exercise when you are in tune with and respond to the needs of your body. had the privilege of being asked to attend the Bribie State School’s 2020 Student Leadership Investiture Ceremony on Friday the 6th. After speaking with Principal Pete Keen, I realised just how much work and effort goes into these awards, not just by the staff but the children as well.

The children needed to apply in the 3rd term last year, with a written application, supported by evidence of why they would be a suitable candidate for the role, what they can achieve and their

ideas on how to bring the best of themselves to the role. They then have to give a 2-minute speech in front of their peers and teachers about why they are a good candidate before they go before a voting committee made up of the yr. 4, 5 & 6 students and teachers. The vote is weighted obviously due to the number of students to teachers so that each group makes up half of the total outcome.

HEALTH WELLBEING AND COMMUNITY the house captains, (2 per house) and the rest of the formal designated positions are filled by the students with the best fit for the role. The remainder of the student leaders become Peer Mentors. All students who nominate for a leadership role, and progress past the usual checks and balances relating to suitability for a leadership position, are rewarded for their courage and willingness to have a go.

After that, they had to take their Commitment Oath to seal the deal. I must admit, these kids did their parents proud. The school too should be very proud of the job they are doing, giving the kids the opportunity to get support when needed, giving them goals to strive for as well as (which I noted throughout the presentation) monitoring each and every child and attending to their needs when they arose.

have been asked several times as to why this was called Operation Bribie. The answer is simple, all operations held by Australian Soldiers in South Vietnam were called after towns, Cities and places of Australia.

Operation Bribie was a quick reaction operation which was launched at 1300hrs on the 17 February 1967, to establish a blocking position and prevent the withdrawal east of an enemy force that had unsuccessfully attempted a major ambush on Route 44, between Dat Do and Phouc Hai on the night of 16th and 17th February 1967. This was a full Battalion operation, with B Coy doing a quick attack on the enemy position. This developed into a four hour battle at close

range, with the Company breaking contact just before last light... The terrain was close scrub Savannah. The enemy pits were sited most skilfully, invariably located under a heavy canopy of low vegetation, and well camouflaged. The firing range was at 30 to 60 metres. The APCs moved into the timber to assist with the evacuation of casualties the enemy opened fire with Anti-Tank weapons and knocked out an Armoured Personnel Carrier. The enemy

was beaten back the fire of B Coy and APC...

had a lovely conversation with Charmian Campbell from Century 21 who captured a photo of this legend of a man giving his time and distributing toilet paper to those in need. Charmian told me that they were so touched by this gentleman’s generosity they wanted to know more about him, so they bought him a pie & cold drink & sat down to have a chat with him. This beautiful souls name is Darryl, and he decided to give away toilet paper opposite Century 21 on the 19th of March. Darryl suffers from an auto immune disease and is on a disability pension

as a consequence of that disease. Obviously not a well or rich man himself, he still put himself out there to make sure the needs of others were met. This is a true act of kindness.

After Charmian spoke with Darryl about his motivation for doing this, he simply said “There needs to be better happening and not all the doom & gloom” What an act of kindness that was witnessed on Benabrow Ave. Offering free toilet paper to those in need. Thank you for being a great example and sharing what you have when you are doing it tough yourself Darryl. What a beautiful world

we could all live in if we followed this man’s example. Thank you as well to Charmian for caring and making sure he had

something to eat and drink and sharing Darryl’s story with me. I hope Darryl’s story touches you all as much as it did me.

Kitchen Sanitation Tips K FOOD, WINE & ISLAND TIMES

itchen sanitation isn’t just about wiping off your counters or washing your hands after you handle raw chicken. If you want to keep everyone in your household clean, healthy and safe (and we think you do), focus your attention on these three main areas and follow these rules. • STORAGE: Your fridge should be kept cooler than 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and the freezer should be at 0 degrees (check the temperature every three months). Go through the refrigerator once a week and toss out anything that’s past its prime. Raw meat, poultry, eggs, cooked food or cut produce should never sit out for more than two hours. Defrost food in cold running water or overnight in

the refrigerator, never on the counter. • PREPARATION and cooking: When you’re preparing food, repeat this mantra: “Clean,

separate, cook, chill.” You need to not only keep raw meats separate from other foods, but also washed fruits and vegetables separate from

unwashed produce -- and you should have different cutting boards for meats and produce. • CLEANING: There’s really no need for chemical cleaners in the kitchen (and you definitely shouldn’t use them in the fridge). Lemon juice and distilled white vinegar can become your best friends for kitchen cleaning: Lemon juice neutralizes odours, vinegar is an amazing disinfectant and sanitizer, and both are great degreasers. A spray bottle of undiluted white vinegar is a handy-dandy multitasker, and a little bleach and water can also go a long way. And don’t forget cleaning yourself: Wash, wash, wash your hands -- after handling raw poultry, sneezing, blowing your nose, using the bathroom, petting your dog, the list goes on. Always use warm water and soap and scrub for at least 20 seconds.

INGREDIENTS • 500 grams pork mince • 4 tablespoons hoisin sauce • 1 small red capsicum • 12 cos lettuce leaves

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cook the mince until browned in a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. 2. Add the capsicum, season with cracked pepper and stir to combine.

3. Add the hoisin sauce, reduce heat and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes. 4. Remove from heat to cool slightly. 5.Carefully remove lettuce leaves so they remain intact and trim into round, dishlike bowls, and place on a platter. 6. Spoon the tasty pork mixture evenly across the lettuce cups. 7. Serve immediately garnished with freshly diced capsicum.

ver the last few years, the Wallum Action Group (WAG) has been responsible for providing support to many worthy causes within the community and, at a small gathering recently, another two organisations benefitted from the group’s generosity. In presenting a $5,000 cheque to representatives from both the Caboolture Group Rural Brigade and the St Vincent De Paul Bushfire Appeal, WAG President David Wearne told those present that as there were many bushfire victims who needed

support he was confident that the $5,000 donation to the Bushfire Appeal would be of help in getting them re-established. On receiving the cheque on behalf of the Caboolture Group Rural Fire Brigade, group Deputy Operations Officer Alf Moran explained that the role of the group is to support the various brigades throughout the region and those are at Narangba, Mt Mee, Wamuran and Delaney’s Creek as well as Rocksberg, Toorbul and Pumicestone. he Saturday was cool and miserable with intermittent showers. My daughter, Tamara, was visiting with my two grandsons, Joseph aged four years, and Marcus just two years, whilst their father Bill, played golf in the rain.

My husband, henceforth referred to as Poor Poorly Poppy, was very sensibly under the duvet from whence he had no intention of emerging. Tamara quietly suggested that we might take the children to the cinema to see the newest kids film “Robots”. I must admit I was not keen for a number of reasons, principally concerning Marcus, whom I thought was far too young, would either fall asleep, get frightened, become bored, or find some other twoyear-old fashion to create mayhem.

First, we got the tickets. Marcus was free, being only two, and then both boys were shepherded into the toilets to “try”. Marcus was congratulated on a splendid stand-up wee.

However, I did not want to be a kill-joy, and I could see that two, rather than one adult, would be a good idea and so I agreed to go along. Marcus went for an early sleep in order to be alert for his very first film, whilst Joseph found Uncle Simon’s Lego that he had when he was a boy, and all was peace. Finally, it was time to go. After farewell pats for P.P.P., all climbed into the car. Both boys sang “To the pictures, to the pictures, to the pictures,” in a somewhat tuneless fashion, but with great enthusiasm. I wondered what was going on in Marcus’s head since he had not a clue as to what to expect, never having been to the cinema before this momentous occasion. Joseph was an old hand since his father had taken him to see “Finding Nemo.” on a previous occasion.

A Rising Resort

his is the cover of a 1925 Queensland Tourism brochure promoting Mountain & Seaside Resorts in Southern Queensland. It was published by the Intelligence and Tourism Bureau to promote the attractions and accommodation of more than 30 locations, from

Noosa to the Tweed. It was a 181 page black and white brochure, with a splash of red colour on the cover. A very comprehensive and expensive piece of publicity in its day.

One of the new Seaside Resorts included was the rapidly growing Bribie Island, to which Steamships had been carrying passengers since a Jetty had been built there in 1912. It was 10 years later before the first basic road was cleared on Bribie, from the jetty to the Ocean Beach in 1924, and trucks began

carrying people from the jetty to the surf beach. The Introduction to the brochure encourages people to “See your own country first” and enjoy some of the natural and unspoilt environment.

In America, the motto “See your own Country First” has for years been held in honour, in printed official direction and practical public observance. In the great Australian Commonwealth, and more particularly in the highly varied State of Queensland, it should receive similar honour, and happily, it increasingly does so. The Queensland Intelligence

and Tourist Bureau has much pleasure in presenting this little volume as an additional means whereby those who desire to know and enjoy Queensland may receive direction in regard to pleasurable places to visit and profitable localities in which to reside, at least so far as the South-Eastern portion of the State is concerned.

Bribie became a very popular visitor destination, and by 1925 some Guest Houses had been set up, and locals were selling goods to the campers. The brochure includes an advert for “Kyogle”, one of the early Boarding houses, and “Hall & Bestmann” the first general store. The Kyogle building still stands today at the south end of South Esplanade, and is currently being nicely restored, and L.J.Hookers real estate stands on the site of the first General Store.

A COMPANY TOWN Bribie Island had been developed as a tourist destination by the significant investments

of the Brisbane Tug & Steamship Co. who leased land at Bongaree, built the Jetty in 1912, ran the steamships and early transport, and a large Guest

House at the Ocean Beach. The brochure includes a full-page advert for the two Steamships Doomba and Koopa, which ran regularly

1925 A Rising Resort BRIBIE ISLAND –The RISING RESORT.

Bribie Island, or Bribie as it is more conveniently called, is reached by continuing the steamer trip in the S.S.Koopa or Doomba past Redcliffe to its furthest limits. It is 28 miles from Brisbane and is reached after a three hours’ run from the city, the steamers berthing at a short, wellconstructed jetty. Bribie Island, and Moreton Island, which lies opposite at from Brisbane via Redcliffe to the jetty at Bribie, for a return fare cost of four shillings. For that, you got more than 6 hours boat trip across Moreton Bay, for the equivalent of about $17 in today’s money. Quite a cheap excursion, compared to the equivalent of $14 toll for a one minute drive over the new Bribie Bridge, when it opened 38 years later in 1963.

Near the Jetty is a commodious refreshment room, where fish and oyster dinners are obtainable, and stores at which campers can purchase requisites. A large pavilion, bathing sheds and other conveniences for the use of visitors have been erected.

THE ATTRACTIONS OF BRIBIE

The words reflect the social style of the time, with attractions such as “commodious refreshment rooms” and “Bathing Sheds” and the famous “Fish and Oyster dinners”. In those days ladies went to the seaside in long flowing dresses, men in jackets with collar and tie, and mixed sea bathing was frowned on.

Accommodation is provided by a number of boarding houses, and as a further inducement, the steamship company has erected twelve huts of standard design and size (14 feet X 12 feet) along the inner beach. On application to the caretaker these may be let at the rate of 10 shillings per week at Christmas, New Year and Easter. The above description of Bribie Island in 1925 may help to explain its great popularity.

A couple of advertisements in the brochure show “Glan-y-Mor” guest house in Banya Street offering “comfortable board”, and also its magnificent display of trimmed Bribie Pine

trees known as the Novelty Gardens. Many people would take the full day boat trip just to view these Novelty Gardens, which had many spectacular topiary displays. They also had a Kiosk and Store right at the Jetty, which had among its many offerings, Kodak supplies of film for your camera. Now that’s an interesting item from the past for older readers! The Motor Service from the Jetty to the main beach was also promoted, with a photo of the large wooden “Ocean Beach” guest house which stood among the sand dunes, close to where the Surf Club stands today. The building was occupied by the military during World War 2, but was sadly destroyed by fire in 1947.

We also have signs up advising that if you have flu-like symptoms that you do not enter the shop, this also refers to people who have just returned from overseas. We have a duty of care to all our staff, volunteers and of course our customers, so please stay away if you are unwell or we may have to close if any of our staff become ill.

Could we also ask our customers to ensure the public toilets are kept clean, if you find the toilet dirty or the bin full of paper towels at any time, please advise one of the staff or Peta on the counter so it can be cleaned. Please continue to follow good hygiene practices at all times and advise us if you notice we have run out of soap or hand towels in the toilets. Also, remember to wear shoes and ensure the kiddies have them on too. Thank you for your co-operation.

PICK UP OF DONATIONS We are continuing to pick up donated items, but to protect our drivers we are asking that you make arrangements only if you are well and also haven’t just arrived home from overseas. Our drivers sometimes have to enter your homes to get the items and we cannot subject them to close proximity to anyone that is sick. So ensure that if you have to self-isolate at all, you advise us so we can make arrangements to pick up your items at a later date. We sincerely thank you for your co-operation in all the issues above, if we follow the guidelines set down by government and employment bodies then hopefully we can try and help minimise any spreading of the virus on Bribie. We

EARLY CLOSURES Recently we had to close the shop early a few days to accommodate the builder of the new units being erected just behind us, they had to put in new pipelines and sadly had to dig up our driveway. We can’t see any further issues in the foreseeable future but if any arise we hope to be able to give you ample notice if possible. NOTES To make a hand sanitizer spray, simply use witch hazel instead of Aloe Vera gel in this recipe. The lavender is used in the recipe to round out the strong scent of the tea tree oil. If you’re not a fan of lavender, choose another antibacterial

oil such as rosemary, sage, sandalwood, or peppermint.

Always take care when handling essential oils. They are very concentrated, powerful plant extracts. If you are new to using essential oils you may want to test for an allergic reaction before slathering on this homemade hand sanitizer. As with any natural plant, family members could be allergic. For a simple patch test mix one drop of essential oil with about 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Rub a bit on the inside of your elbow, cover with a bandage, and wait 24 hours to see if there is any negative reaction.

SEARCH AND RESCUE Saturday 7th March 2020 – VMRBI received a call from Water Police about 1715pm that people were in the water off Redcliffe. Bribie 1 attended the SAR but were stood down around 1800pm as the people had been recovered, Bribie 1 arrived back at base around 1835pm. The following was forwarded by the Water Police:“An investigation in the death of a 44-year-old man has commenced following

a fatal marine incident in Moreton Bay, east of Redcliffe, this afternoon. Around 5pm, emergency services were called to two men who were thrown overboard from a yacht, one was reported to be unconscious. Brisbane Water Police coordinated a rescue involving volunteer marine units and the Rescue 500 helicopter. The unconscious man was located a short time later and brought to shore. Paramedics worked to resuscitate the 44-year-old man, however he was later declared deceased. Initial investigations suggest the yacht was hit by a large wave causing a boom to swing and hit the two men, knocking them overboard. The 44-year-old man sustained fatal head injuries while two others were transported to hospital with minor injuries. Three other men who were also onboard were not physically injured. Officers from Brisbane Water Police and the Forensic Crash Unit are continuing investigations.”

STRADBROKE VESSEL ARRIVES IN TASMANIA: 11th March 2020:Kingborough Rescue 1 has arrived at its new home on Wednesday 11th March 2020! Volunteer Marine Rescue Kingborough is some 30km South of Hobart. They now have the big task ahead of them getting it ready for the water. The following is an excerpt from VMR Kingborough website: “We are extremely excited to announce that we have been successful in our grant application with the Tasmanian Community Fund. This grant will allow us to purchase a replacement marine search and rescue vessel as well as an air launching berth purpose fit to respond to incidents as well as expand and provide additional services to various communities of southern Tasmania. The vessel and launching berth will enable faster response times in emergencies, provide assistance to Tasmania Police in a search and rescue capacity, and provide water safety to a number of community groups and events. The vessel has a proven hull design, modern outboards and is fitted with current navigation and radio equipment, providing a safer and reliable vessel for our volunteers. The vessel was used by Marine Rescue North

VOLUNTEER MARINE RESCUE Stradbroke Island and is an 8.8 metre Noosa Cat powered by twin Suzuki 250hp outboard motors. While it’s still early days, over the next few months we will be organising transport, minor maintenance, electronic fit out (migrate from current vessel to new), testing and crew familiarisation.

The Tasmanian Community Fund was established in 1999 to provide grants to not-for-profit organisations. The fund arose from the sale of the Trust Bank. The sale proceeds were used to gain two particular benefits to the community: 1. Retirement of a portion of State debt; and 2. Establish a community fund to distribute an annual appropriation to the community through grants. Since our last update we have been extremely busy behind the scenes organising transport and ensuring our new vessel is compliant to operate in our local Tassie waters. Our new vessel was lifted on March 3rd by Burpengary Crane Hire and put on the back of a truck from Gradco (Heavy Haulage Specialists) at Marine Rescue Bribie Island. From there it made the long drive (approx. 1,750km) down to Melbourne where it was placed on a ship bound for Tasmania. A big thank you to both Burpengary Crane Hire and Gradco for their assistance in ensuring that the new vessel arrived to us safely.

SAFETY DAVE THE FRENCHIE WANTS TO TALK ABOUT PERSONAL LOCATOR BEACONS (PLBS) PLBs are smaller and easier to transport than other beacons, and are designed to be worn or carried by individuals these can be used on land, sea and air. There are many different makes on the market so take your time to decide what PLB is the best for you. They are light weight and easy to use in an emergency it literally puts rescue in the palm of your hand. For a PLB to be legally

acceptable, it needs to abide by all of the following: 1. It must comply with the standard AS/NZs 4280.2 2. The owner or master of the ship must have it registered with the Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA). 3. It must have up-to-date registration. 4. It must be GPS-enabled. 5. It must float, or must be fitted with a pouch or similar item that ensures it will float. Note: PLBs are not considered a substitute for EPIRBs when adhering to State and Territory marine rules and regulations

And, as on most trips, it is how you spend your time while on the journey that is the key – not necessarily the destination. A fact recognised long ago by the Cheshire Cat, who, when in conversation with Alice, said: ‘…it doesn’t (really) matter which way you go.’ As many of you may know, I grew up in Canberra. Canberra has a very cold winter that lasts from late April to October. We’d use Anzac Day as the gauge to turn the heating

on and knew that by the long weekend in October, we could turn it off. Our houses, offices, schools and cars were all heated and after a freezing morning of minus 7 or 8 degrees Celsius and frost-covered gardens we usually had clear blue skies and still days. However many days were grey, cold and overcast with the maximum temperature reaching only 3 or 4 degrees with a freezing wind-chill factor. When we walked or went to sporting events we rugged up in coats, hats, scarves and gloves. I always felt the cold. Dad bought me an electric blanket when I was 9 and I wore thermal spencers most winter days. Early on in our marriage, and after one or two overseas holidays, Michael and I started heading to Queensland in September/ October, for our annual holiday. Michael would make a 100 day count down calendar for us each year and every morning we would mark off the number of days until we packed the car to drive to the warmth. If May was particularly cold the countdown calendar

became 130 days until departure. Knowing that the Queensland trip was coming up got me through those cold winter days and nights. It also became a fun thing for our young son Tim to do. I’ve always felt it was our time travelling together on these journeys that cemented our marriage and family. Cocooned together for hours on end we learnt a lot about each other. For 35 years, we left Canberra at 6.00 am or soon after. This meant getting up at 4 am, so that I could make the thermos of milk coffee and pack the picnic lunch and morning and afternoon tea snacks, while Michael packed the car. When Tim was young the early morning preparations involved packing nappy bags and baby food and getting him strapped in for the long journey. This early morning ritual became part of the journey and thus part of the fun. We always chose the Newell Highway for the long trip north, because it passed through many beautiful

country towns and because it bypassed the urbanised and congested coastal Highway. The Newell runs generally north-south, parallel to the eastern coast of New South Wales, about 400 kilometres inland, and is the main inland direct road link from Victoria to Queensland. We had driven to Surfers Paradise for our honeymoon in 1971 but went via the Pacific Highway. Dad had taken us to Queensland for family holidays and Michael had travelled with mates from Newcastle but used the Pacific Highway. The Newell then also became part of our family’s folklore. It was always dark and cold when we drove out. The highway to Yass was busy with oncoming traffic carrying commuters from Yass and Murrumbateman to work in Canberra. The right turn off the Hume Highway and onto the Lachlan Valley Way, was always a welcome sight, and signalled our departure from the urban sprawl and main highways, and meant we were well and truly on

The selection of the books we listened to on our road trips took much research. However, we always started with a ‘Paul Temple’ by Francis Durbridge. At first, I wasn’t at all impressed with these books, thinking they were very old fashioned but Michael loved them. Over the years I came to enjoy the adventures of Paul and his wife Louise, affectionately known as ‘Steve’. Paul solved whodunit crimes through subtle, humorously eloquent reasoning. Always the gentleman, the strongest expletive Paul ever used was ‘by Timothy’ – which so endeared him to a young Tim sitting in the back of the car. We all cheered when he said it. We lived with Paul through exploding motorboats, car

through Boorowa and Cowra to Canowindra for our morning coffee stop around 9 am. The canola fields between Cowra and Canowindra were always such a magical sight. A sea of yellow fields stretching as far as you could see on either side of the road. Canowindra is set on the banks of the Belubula River and is the hot air balloon capital of Australia. We sometimes saw balloons drifting through the early morning pink and orange skies – it was always a delightful sight. Our morning coffee stop in Morris Park in Canowindra was such an enjoyable break. The park has beautiful palm trees and an old tractor on which we always posed for a photo. It also has the necessities including clean toilets. In all our years doing this trip we rarely met anyone else stopping at ‘our’ spot. Then, it was onto Wellington via Cudal and Molong, and finally joining the A39, Newell Highway at Dubbo. Over the years we have stayed in Dubbo a few times, but mainly on trips heading south.

After a few years of driving through the town, we learnt about Purvis Lane and how to navigate around the back streets of Dubbo. This saved us going through the lights and other stops,

The next town on the Newell is Gilgandra, which was usually a refuelling and toilet stop for us. In the earlier years, we had a picnic lunch at beautiful Hickey Falls, a Roadside stop located 56 kilometres on from Gilgandra. It is a beautiful sealed spot with a creek and a path to the falls. There are picnic tables and waste bins and the area is well maintained. However, there are no toilet facilities. In later years we had our picnic in the Park next to the Visitor Information Centre in Gilgandra. Here there are picnic tables under a big old tree, clean toilets and water.

We listened to mainly unabridged readings of Harlan Coban, John Grisham, Michael Connelly, Karen Charlton, Georgette Heyer (did you know she had a Detective series?),

26 members and marched through Dubbo, where 12 new recruits joined. The march continued through the towns and villages of the Central West before reaching Lithgow and gaining momentum as it headed over the mountains, arriving in Sydney with 263 recruits. Since the nine Austin’s were parked in line outside the Butterfly house they attracted a fair amount of interest as well. Many people came to discuss the cars with the owners – most reminiscing about who owned a similar car back in the day. Bribie Island residents are missing out on a great opportunity. We all know our Koala populations are being decimated by land clearing, development, draught, and most recently the horrendous bush fires. Now is the perfect time to call for Bribie Island’s National Park to be “The National Park” supporting a huge Koala Habitat, a Koala Hospital and an amazing Ecotourism Opportunity. Bribie Islanders’ are constantly making noises that governments should be upgrading our approach roads and the need for a second bridge. Besides our moaning we never really give politicians a reason to act. I have been on the island for three years and can’t say I have heard many, if any, constructive ideas to improve the islands environment. All we ever hear is get rid of the four wheel drives, keep dogs off the beaches, our roads are a mess, and we need another bridge!

Bribie Island is in the Moreton Bay Region of Queensland, the island is 34 kilometres long and 8 kilometres at its widest, less than 20% can be built on. Most of the island is uninhabited national park 55.8 square kilometres. The island is the perfect location for a new government established Australian Koala Sanctuary. The middle of the island has a vast State Forest Plantation of pine trees which could be quickly logged and cleared. I suggest there would be very little environmental impact on our Fauna and Flora. State and Federal governments could quickly initiate mass eucalypt plantings. What a great job for volunteers and people wanting to work 15

hours a week for income support instead of job seeking. In no time we could have homeless Koalas taking up residence and happily breeding! The Island is perfect for a Koala sanctuary; Bribie Island National Parks and Wildlife Service already have a baiting strategy in place to control wild dogs, foxes and feral cats. A dog-fence could be run across the island (at most only 8 kilometres) to control domestic dog access. Koalas’ would have a super safe location, protected by sea on three sides and a fence on the other, a perfect habitat. The Department of Environment and Science oversees Queensland Nation Parks and Wildlife Service, there is already an Ecotourism Development Unit established and functioning. If governments truly want to move quickly and act upon the current Koala crisis why not seek assistance from proven entrepreneurs’ like Robert Comiskey, owner of the Sandstone Point Hotel or someone like the Toowoomba-based Wagners. I am sure Koala Ecotourism would bring a fortune to Bribie Island, give government a reason for new roads, a new bridge and numerous other infrastructure needs. What a great location, its only 55 kilometres from Brisbane, 50 minutes to the airport, one hour to the Sunshine Coast. This week Peter Gleason wrote a brilliant editorial in the Courier Mail ‘Better Planning can save koalas’ he quotes “The World Health Foundation (WHF) estimates there are just 300,000 koalas left in Australia and they will be extinct by 2050”. “It’s

I would like to bring attention to road users of the hazard on First Avenue road, heading to Woorim on the left side, in the vicinity of the Memorial Gardens. For many weeks now there has been a buildup and spread of a large amount of sand across the cycle lane and now verging on the edge of the roadway. Cyclists are forced to move onto the road to avoid riding through the sand. Please, drivers, be aware that cyclists may have to move out in front of you when you may not expect it. This issue has been reported to the council on more than one occasion but there has been no action to fix the problem. First Avenue road as a whole has always presented hazards for cyclists with the regular egress onto the cycle lane of sand, dirt, branches and other roadside rubbish forcing riders onto the road with cars travelling at up to 80km/h. This is not pleasant for riders and drivers alike. Taking into account my cycle

group riding four times a week, two other organised group rides twice weekly and individual riders, I estimate that that road is used by cyclists possibly up to 100 occasions a week. It would be appropriate for the council to consider weekly maintenance on this road, a run over with the big sweeper perhaps, and regular inspections at the time to note and attend to more major clearing to keep this a safe cycle lane for all road users and leave the roadway for the cars. Cyclists rarely complain about the number of smashed bottles and other debris we have to swerve or stop to avoid in the cycle lane/ roadside, having a number of times returned to the spot to sweep up and remove the debris myself as the council does not maintain regular cleaning of the roadways. I understand these are ongoing problems that can be not be resolved in one action but surely, like anything, regular maintenance is the better option. The sand across the road on First Avenue has the potential for a serious accident involving cyclists and cars, and I am sure no driver wants to hit a cyclists,(no matter how much abuse we may get on the road) and it is council’s responsibility to safely maintain assets it provides for the community. I am sure if it was an issue with a footpath council would fix it promptly to avoid any potential legal action as a result of an accident to a pedestrian. So please, remove the sand before someone gets killed. Regards Jan Marion

RECENT BREAK INS, BRIBIE ISLAND

Bribie Island Police are appealing to residents to lock and secure their houses, even while they are at home. Over the past week, multiple burglary offences have occurred on the island and police need your assistance. Two burglary offences have occurred in Cosmos Avenue in the past few days. The first offence occurred between 10 pm on March 10 and 6 am on March 11. The residence was entered through an unlocked rear door. Some keys were tampered with and cash stolen from a handbag. The second incident occurred between 6.30 pm on March 15 and 9.40 am on March 16, where a vehicle was stolen from

an unlocked garage. A spare key to the vehicle was used to start the 2013 white D-Max, with Queensland registration 567TKV. The vehicle has not been located at this time. A Malva Court residence at Bongaree was entered between 8 am on March 10 and 5 pm on March 11. Entry was gained through an open garage door and a small table was stolen. A house at Monavale Court, Sandstone Point was also entered when a hole was poked through a locked screen door and the lock opened from inside. Cash was stolen from the residence. Police recommend that you key lock your screen doors and remove the key from the lock. Another Sandstone Point residence was entered in Seaforth Street while the resident was away on “Local family business for over 34 years.”
