Bribie to host kids from the west

coordinated by members of the Rotary Clubs at Charleville, Mitchell and Roma, as well as Bribie Island which initiated the project.

These children are from families which have endured financial hardship and mental trauma caused by the prolonged drought and this project will provide an opportunity for us to show we care and provide some practical relief for the affected children of these long-suffering families.

During their week on Bribie, the kids will enjoy local activities as well as excursions being planned, before returning home with fond memories of their experience at Bribie Island.

AWCS, (Rotary Australia World Community Service Ltd) has approved a compassionate grant of $15000, subject to matching fund raising to bring children from drought impacted areas of western Queensland for weeklong camps after the new year.

Twenty primary school children will be accompanied by four chaperones for each camp which will be accommodated at Coungeau House (Toc H) in Banya Street Bongaree at very modest cost.

The participants will be selected by the Isolated Children’s Parents Association in conjunction with schools, including the School of the Air and social workers and will be

There has already been strong indication of community support from discussions with representatives from Bribie Island Bowls club, Vietnam Veterans Association and Bribie Island Rotary club.

The Bribie Island Life savers will also be involved with surfing activities. Butterfly house has already promised a donation of $2000 to kick the project off.

RAWCS is a registered not for profit charity and provides tax deductible receipts for all donations received. The project has been registered under the name of “Kids to the Coast- Bribie Island” and all donations must be paid online to project 37-2019-20 with this link:

all outgoings direct upon receipt of emailed invoices and transparent financial records are maintained by the RAWCS office.

Organisations are encouraged to plan their own fundraising activity to support this project and receive acknowledgement of them for their own members.

For general interest, RAWCS is a “ hands on” organisation which is very involved with its “Donations in kind” project which accepts recycled useful assets including hospital and medical equipment, school class room furniture, books, etc as well as birthing kits, spectacles and many other useful items which are packed into containers and freighted to our pacific neighbours and beyond. RAWCS other activities includes Project Volunteers which organises teams of self-funded

volunteers to travel to other countries, as well as regional Australia, to assist with identified community projects of need.

irstly, a very large and appreciative shout-out to Jo Meredith and Bribie Island Lions Club for the very successful Woorim markets, back in the beginning of the month. It was just beautiful to see so many people come out for the event.

The Mangroves at Blueys The last Locals Only Show was no surprise in that it was just a perfect afternoon of music and laughter.

The WhamBam Thank You Band began the festivities with some rollicking tunes followed by Neal Downes who is just beautiful to listen to.

Drummer, Selwyn Bruhl stood in for Gentlemen John and his band, The Mangroves, were one of the most popular performances of the day.

Gonzo Zonk added a new dimension to their music with Peter Piddington in their line-up. These folks are just getting better and better every time we see them.

All in all, it was another successful and fun show and isn’t that what it’s all about, in the end?

We, the performers and crew from the show would like to Thank You all for making the show so special and would like to wish you a happy and safe Silly Season. Next month...Our 13th Birthday!

be back at Blueys. I’m glad to tell you all that on the 10th January, the really astonishing Grant Daniel will be appearing at Blueys from 5 - 9 pm. Definitely a performance not to be missed.

Also ran into Seamus O’Donnell. He’s been busy with work but still picks up his guitar. He said he might come to one of the next Sunday Shows. Great singer/songwriter and guitarist.

Hayden Kirley’s new album is on Spotify now and he’s assured me that he will come to the Show to promote it. What a very good bunch of music.

Looking forward to another successful year of the Locals Only Show and our 13th birthday will be held on the last Sunday in January. It will also feature the Locals Only Awards for the best artists of the year. This part of the show is sponsored by the local business community, for which we are very grateful. Little Elves

anta’s little elves have some help this Christmas, as Home Instead Senior Care worked with the local Bribie Island State School who decorated and delivered 90 Christmas cards to the residents at McKenzie Aged Care Bribie Cove.

“We work closely with the senior community here at Home Instead Senior Care by helping them to stay at home and maintain their independence. We have noticed from our close work, that Christmas does not always provide all seniors joy or excitement.

Many may suffer from loneliness during the holiday season, especially those who are in aged care facilities and who are away from their family and loved ones. Home Instead Senior Care developed the ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ campaign as a small gesture to show our seniors there are people out there thinking of them at this time of year. It is such a great opportunity for us to connect the

young generation with the ageing community, and instil values of kindness and respect towards the community,” says Jodi Doe, Client Services manager at Home Instead Senior Care Brisbane North.

ach year in June the group host the Pre-loved Fashion Parade and this year the event was attended by 400 people, thus building community spirit and

inclusiveness through recycled fashion, with an emphasis on sustainable living and the way of the future – sustaining budgets and the environment,

while building a cohesive, inclusive community.

For most of the year, we have an ugly looking spiky caterpillar-like cactus that is supported by an elderly coastal Banksia tree that struggles to maintain its burden. However, in the summer months, the cactus blooms once, twice, maybe three times.

The buds develop over a couple of weeks until it looks as if the cactus is covered with erect candles.

Christmas Time You realise that by the time you are reading this there are only about 2 ½ weeks to Christmas.

So get moving if there are presents to buy.

Dragon Fruit Cactus or Hylocereus undatus having diaphanous white petals that glow in the darkness whilst the centre is crowded with yellow stamens and a complex stigma/style. On one occasion Don and I counted more than two hundred blossoms, each one as big as a man’s hand. The show is always spectacular but brief; they stay with us for no more than two hours after dawn, attracting bees both native and honey by their pollen and perfume before drooping and fading. After pollination,

a red succulent fruit develops that can be eaten or used in drinks.

Scientifically our miracle originally comes from Vietnam and is known as a Dragon Fruit Cactus or Hylocereus undatus but how it came to grow at the bottom of our yard is a complete mystery.

Don was always fascinated by this miracle of beauty and once said that this was where he would like his ashes to be scattered.

His wish was granted.

Plus there are the Christmas parties to which you have been invited. They can be a work party, client party or a combination of both and some may include partners.

If you are considering holding a Christmas party for your staff, there are a few guidelines to determine where the cost falls for tax. Costs of parties (food and drink) are exempt from FBT if they are provided on a working day on the business premises and to current staff only.

This is the property benefit exemption and are tax deductible.

Exempt benefits for minor costs is covered if less than $300 is spent per employee, or for associates of the employees, whether onsite or not. Again, tax deductible. Gifts provided must be under $300 to be claimed as minor exempt benefits.

Over $300 cost per head or Christmas gifts over $300 attract FBT. Costs of entertaining clients are not subject to FBT nor are they tax deductable.

So, consider your guest list, the cost per head, and whether to have the party onsite or not.

Mind Over Matter – a ‘War and Conflict’ Vaccine!

R

egular readers will recall my passion for the Rotary Peace Fellows Program. I have written several articles about the program and explained that each year, Rotary pays for 100 of the world’s most dedicated and brightest professionals to study at Rotary Peace Centres. Through training, study, and practice, Rotary Peace Fellows become leaders and catalysts for peace and conflict resolution.

In the five years I have been in Rotary, I have had the privilege of meeting three Peace Fellows, sponsored by our own award winning Bribie Rotary. All three have studied for their Masters degree at the Rotary Peace Centre at the University of Queensland.

Recently our current Peace Fellow, Nico Schneider, from Germany, gave a presentation at our meeting about his work and what he hopes to achieve.

Nico told us he had meet with K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran, who was Rotary International (RI) President in 2015-16 and currently a Trustee and Chair of the RI Board. Ravi, who is from Sri Lanka, commented to Nico that Rotary had invested thousands of dollars in the Peace Fellow program and was looking for results. Nico responded that War and Conflict are not like Polio - you can’t find a vaccine to prevent them.

However, this response inspired me to not only write this article but to think of ways to provide immunity against War. Margaret Atwood said 34

‘War is what happens when Language fails’. One of my favourite authors, Ernest Hemingway wrote ‘Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime.’

Similarly, John Steinbeck wrote ‘All war is a symptom of man’s failure as a thinking animal.’ So if we can think of War as a crime and a failure, then surely we can take John Lennon’s path and ‘give peace a chance.’ But why is peace building so hard? As I have always believed the pen is mightier than the sword, I think Nico and all our Peace Fellows can find that vaccine he spoke of through their writings, presentations and hands on contributions to Peace organisations.

Many say Peace is a popular wish, a fantasy. Perhaps we need a rock star or band to sing Peace songs at concerts. Stars like Robbie William at Knebworth where he held 375,000 people spellbound, or Snow Patrol preforming at Oxegen in Ireland, when the 80,000 attendees sang ‘Run’, leaving the lead singer speechless.

Music is the universal language that connects all people. In particular rock music which has had a very powerful impact on society. It has influenced daily life, language, fashion and attitudes in a way few other social developments have ever done.

I also often wonder what might happen should we put the money spent on fostering and prolonging war in developing countries, especially selling them weapons, into growing those countries instead. Building schools and hospitals, bridges and road systems. Developing agriculture

Organisations like Rotary are making inroads with water and sanitation and education programs, but there is still a long way to go. Call me naive or silly – but just imagine what might happen if we really put all our efforts into these projects rather than funding wars?

Nico described himself as ‘a politically minded relationship builder, an analytical thinker, and an experimental practitioner who wants to cross borders and look for close partnerships with people who want to create tangible change.’

As part of the degree Nico has to complete a three month internship over the academic year break and he has chosen to do this at the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) in Durban. ACCORD ‘works across the Peacemaking – Peacekeeping – Peacebuilding continuum as it seeks to encourage and promote the constructive resolution of disputes in Africa and so assist in achieving political stability, economic recovery and peaceful co-existence within just and democratic societies.’ In so doing ACCORD focuses on encouraging and consolidating conversation towards the prevention, management and transformation of conflict.

Our previous Peace Fellow, Raina Fox, who in July 2019 graduated with

a High Distinction in her Masters degree, is now working with Oxfam America, in Boston. She is working on the US Domestic Programs team, which does anti poverty, labour justice and human rights work in the USA. A role model for us all.

Plato once said ‘Only the dead have seen the end of war.’ Today there are more wars and conflicts in the World than ever before. So we really do need a Peace Revolution. Wars are not the solution - they are the most expensive and ineffective method of resolving conflict. Using Bob Dylan’s words don’t let the ‘Masters of War fasten all the triggers for others to fire and sit back and watch, when the death count gets high.’ We need every person and every community on Earth working for peaceful resolutions to conflict. A common dream and cause always unites, so let’s sell the Peace Dream and thus create a ‘War and Conflict Vaccine’ for Nico. It may well be a ‘Mind Vaccine? A Vaccine of Mind over Matter?

Of course the best person to quote at the end of any article on a War Vaccine might well be Joseph Heller –

Peace Fellow Nico Schneider with President Jeff Eustace. the author of Catch 22. We all know that Catch 22 is ‘… some catch, that Catch-22.’ As Yossarian found out, ‘The enemy (in war) is anybody who’s going to get you killed, no matter which side he is on.’ When Yossarian

questioned the futility of war and his desire not to die, Major Danby replied, indulgently with a superior smile: ‘But, Yossarian, suppose everyone felt that way.’ That comment might in itself be the answer.

ost discussion about the viability of renewable energy comes down to the shortcomings of photovoltaic (PV) solar power (like most of us have on our roofs) and wind power. And the line that’s always trotted out is “When the sun don’t shine and the wind don’t blow, where does our power come from?”

The question is usually presented as though it’s a show-stopper, and there can be no comeback. There are answers, but many of those who pose the question are never willing to listen anyway. No-one advocating for renewable energy is suggesting that PV solar and wind turbines are the only two options. Here’s some others:

Solar thermal This is one of the most exciting options, as it not only generates power, but stores it too. In simple terms, an array of mirrors focusses sunlight on to a central tower. The heat generated melts salt, raising its temperature to over 500°C. The molten salt is pumped to underground tanks, and used to superheat steam to drive turbines and produce electricity. The energy gathered on one day can be stored for several days – in fact, a molten-salt plant in Spain set a record in 2016 by continuously producing electricity 24 hours a day for 36 days.

So yes, it’s solar that works at night. You know… when the sun don’t shine.

Pumped hydro Pumped hydro-electricity is a closed system – when electricity prices are at their highest, water from a high reservoir is released down pipes to drive turbines.

That water is stored in a lower reservoir, and when solar and wind power are at their cheapest, the water is pumped back up to the top reservoir. That stored water is effectively electricityin-waiting. Snowy 2.0 and the Kidston dams in North Queensland are two

But what about?

There are many arguments put up against renewable energy: “wind turbines are ugly” (compared to coal mines and power stations?); “they can’t supply enough power” (not yet, but then we’ve hardly started building them); “making solar panels creates pollution” (true, but everything comes with a cost, doesn’t it? And it’s tiny compared to what coal is doing to our world).

Then there’s “What about nuclear?”. That’s worth a whole article in itself, but suffice it to say the true costs vastly outweigh any benefits, in my opinion.

In summary For every argument put up against moving to 100% renewables, there are answers. There are many renewable technologies available to fill the gap when coal is eventually phased out. There’s geothermal, tidal power, wave power and others – search the internet to find out more. One thing they all have in common, though, is that once they’re built the fuel is free and abundant.

Renewable energy is viable, economical and clean, so don’t let anyone tell you differently. Let’s just get it done.

In America the sales of Rose is now starting to slow down after skyrocketing into double digit growth over recent years but it has now reached a 4% market share annually with 6% over summer and with our hot climate I think Rose will continue to grow here, especially as there is a style to suit everyone from sweeter styles to bone dry and at every price point.

Rest, Restore, Re-Create

ood day to you pretty and handsome Island folk.

Golly, the year is coming to a close once again and the excitement of festivity is beginning to brim along our sandy shores. This year, I will finally be able to soak in this time and enjoy the local events that will be popping up; something I haven’t been able to do since year nine when I received my first job. But this year will be different – it will be sacred.

I was listening to a podcast the other day whilst I was gardening. Two gentlemen – Timothy Mackie and Jonathan Collins – were having a discussion about sabbaticals and mentioned an interesting tradition practiced by Jewish communities. It’s called Shmita. Shmita has been practiced for well over 5000 years and is related to agriculture. For six years, you work the land, but on the seventh all planting, trimming and harvesting ceases. In the Torah it states that whatever grows on your field during the seventh year is for, “the poor of your nation, and the rest for wild animals”1.

has decreased as our buzzing world forgets the sacredness of rest. Shlomi Taasa, a gardener who practices the Shmita says, “The main thing for me is that once in seven years, all people are the same.

Whether you’re rich or poor, everything belongs to everyone, and in my garden, everyone can come and take the fruits that I grow”2.

Shmita is also a time were all debts are forgiven.

I find this concept not only desirable and spiritual but also practical. And I believe there are seasons here in the West where farmers rotate their crops to let their fields restore their nutrients also.

There’s something about this idea that wells up feelings of excitement and truth in me. Not so much because I am a farmer (although maybe one day!) but more because I think we need to do the same for our bodies.

REGULAR We are all very good at working, aren’t we? Busy bees here and there and everywhere. Buzz buzz.

But that’s the thing, we are addicted to the buzzing. I remember hearing about a time not too long ago where we didn’t open the shops on Saturday afternoons or Sundays. Now, it seems trading happens 24/7.

The lure is that we think the more we work, the more we produce, the more wealth we have. I get that idea, but it’s wrong. At least in way we work it’s wrong.

It’s not our fault though, the demands for living at a certain standard requires us to push, push, push, and, yes, we get our standard holidays throughout the year, but it doesn’t seem enough. So maybe the thing we need to reconsider, is what is living?

I’ve never been attracted to regimented living. You

FEATURE know that standard, work nine to five, for 60+ years and then retire with a few weeks of rest thrown in here and there. There’s something so bland about it, so commercial. But that’s just me.

Our minds are beautiful, creative - sometimes chaotic places - and yet they are untapped potential.

Sure our regimented living gives a certain kind of order – or dare I say control – over large groups of people, but something about it stifles creativity and identity and change.

That’s why this concept of large sabbaticals seems wise. And when I say large, I mean, several months at least. This is cultivating time in a sacred way where you step out of the buzzing current and just be. Not be lazy, still productive, but in quiet experimental kind of way. Using this time to learn, grow, fix,

try, share, create, restore, mature, change and forgive.

I think the last one is a big one, forgiveness, because sometimes business is our way of avoiding dealing with inward turmoils. And we don’t want to let go. But we must in order to heal.

I sense that if the world truly learned how to nurture time, the land would heal. And so would we.

Well, Islanders, as usual our conversation has gotten pretty deep haha. But it’s all good. Praying for a very jolly time of rest for you all in this season. And remember, if you have something to share and you know someone who would benefit of your time, your cooking, your family or even just your smile, give it, because it might just make their Christmas bright again.

urasian Coots can most commonly be observed at Buckley’s Hole and Bibimulya Wetlands but less so in minor waterholes on Bribie Island. In dry seasons when the water is low or

distinguished by their red bills and bill flaps. Their most prominent feature is their pure white bill shield and bill. Females have a narrower shield. They have a fat dumpy body with black plumage and red eyes. Legs are placed well back on their bodies which helps with their diving.

They do not have webbed feet but instead their long toes have flaps which aid in propulsion in the water.

Immature birds are paler with whitish throats and a white shield which only develops fully at about 12 months. Eurasian Coots are much more aquatic than other rails spending most of their time in open waters often carrying their young on their backs. Occasionally they will venture onto land by the water’s edge. When taking off they run along the surface of the water before launching into the air. They are quite noisy and people living near wetlands often hear their loud calls at night.

Coots live in wetlands, lakes, rivers and brackish estuaries mostly near the coast but can be spotted almost all over the mainland and Tasmania where there is water.

Manmade waterways have been a benefit to Coots especially in dry times.

They are also found in Europe, Asia, some parts of Africa, PNG and were self-introduced into New Zealand in 1958. During the nonbreeding season in right conditions flocks of up to thousands of birds form in some wetlands. It is not often you see a coot in flight because during migration to more lucrative waterholes they usually travel at night.

When frightened they will seek shelter in nearby vegetation rather than fly away.

Food is mainly aquatic vegetation gathered in shallow or deep water.

Coots upend and dive to depths up to 7 metres to find their food. As they dive the air is squeezed

from their feathers so that they become less buoyant.

Sometimes they emerge from the water and pick at vegetation along the water’s edge with the occasional worm or insect taken in.

The breeding season is influenced by the weather and is usually between August and March. New partners are chosen every year. When a coot wishes to attract a new mate, it chases it, running across the surface while thrashing its wings on the water.

Nests are large and built of reeds and grasses with a cup in the centre where 4-7 whitish-grey eggs with purple speckles are laid.

These nests which are sometimes floating rafts and sometimes built from the floor up in shallow waters are usually far from the banks. Both parents incubate the eggs for 22-26 days and care for the young.

Chicks have dark down with orangey skin on their heads and bills and red shields on their faces. Several broods

may be produced in a good season. Mortality rate is very high with usually only an average of about two babies surviving the first 10 days. This is due mainly to starvation. If there is not enough food the parents will kill their babies pecking them then leaving them without food.

Predators such as herons, gulls and reptiles are also a danger to the eggs and young birds. Coots defend their nesting territories strenuously attacking rival coots and other birds which venture near the nest. They sometimes discard the eggs and kill the babies of ducks and grebes nesting in the same waterhole. Chicks can fly at 6 weeks and can look after themselves by the time they are 8 weeks. Very occasionally a little group of two females and one male will nest together.

They are sometimes called Common or Australian Coots. The Latin Fulica means coot and atra is black. A common saying “As

There are many collective nouns such as fleet, shoal, swarm, commotion, covet and raft of coots.

o many amazing original prints for unique Christmas gifts to give or to keep …... that’s what you will see in the First Bribie Printmakers December Artist if the Month exhibition, “30x30”, at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre.

A common theme throughout this celebratory exhibition is the 30cm x 30cm size.

There are Eco prints, multi-coloured lino prints and monoprints to name just some of the techniques these talented printmakers have used, printed on silk, material paper and canvas.

Magpie 3 Friday November 8th saw the group visit the “Tokyo Hanga” print exhibition at the Caloundra Regional Art gallery to gain inspiration and appreciation of other printmakers work, from Japan and Australia. It was an inspiring visit.

The First Bribie Printmakers are fresh from their annual “Print.ed” exhibition where they had a multi-draw raffle in aid of the Dragons Abreast crew.

“30 x 30” will be on display for the entire month of December. You can meet the artists at a morning tea 10.30am FRiday 13th December at 10.30am.

orks in the 20th Clay Creations exhibition this month at Bribie Island Community Arts Centre promise to be wider and more varied than before, says curator Bribie potter Carol SmedleyThe exhibition, which draws

potters from all-over south-east Queensland, opened on December 3 at 6pm. It will run in the Matthew Flinders Gallery until December 15.This year, there will be winners announced in four sections: Overall wheel throwing,

overall hand-built piece, Bribie Potters Members’ prize and Bribie Pottery students prize. These will be judged by renowned and acclaimed Sunshine Coast ceramic artist and potter/ tutor Carol Forster.Works will be large and small, playful and evocative, decorative and stark, says Carol, the curator. “It is always a wonderful surprise to see the clay creativity and imagination out there,” she said. Bribie Potters meet in their studio at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre, 191 Sunderland Drive Banksia Beach three times a week and potter tutor Lynne Smith offers adult lessons on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

t was a lovely hot Sunday afternoon when six club members ventured down to the big smoke at Southbank for their monthly photoshoot. They travelled

in a carpool as trains were not running due to work being done on the lines.

The Theme was “City Lights� and as afternoon turned to night buildings were lit up and became a point of interest to the photography crew. More interesting subjects were the Brisbane Wheel, other Southbank highlights, the Victoria Bridge and traffic trails. Some lovely

Let’s begin with a story …

One day Buddha was meditating in a hillside cave with one of his devotees keeping watch outside.

Suddenly, the devotee glimpsed a demon called Mara coming up the hill.

Panicked, he tried to figure out how to keep Mara away from the Buddha, dreaming up excuses about him being out for lunch or away shopping.

Suddenly, he felt something breathing down on him and looked up to find Mara in all his demonic glory. “I’m here to see the Buddha,” Mara said.

The guard didn’t know what to say when he was interrupted by a voice inside the cave. “Let him come in,” said the Buddha.

Typically, we humans don’t like being uncomfortable and we tend to run away from feelings that are negative and experiences that are uncomfortable. This is avoidance, denial, and/or fear. Psychologists suggest that we are driven by two connected motivations: to feel pleasure and avoid pain. Most of us devote more energy to the latter than the former.

We need to be able to recognize that in our humanness we are designed to feel every range of emotions in the spectrum of possibility. The challenge is learning to have gratitude for the ability to experience the fullness of life.

Three key components for sitting with our discomfort; 1. Developing emotional intelligence (EI) - five elements to EI: selfawareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills.

2. Learning to sit with negative feelings - Sitting with our emotions simply means allowing them, resisting the urge to get rid of the pain and not judging ourselves for having these emotions.

feelings - We don’t need to sit around waiting for other people to evoke our feelings. We can take responsibility to create our own inner world.

The challenge is to reframe discomfort as a positive source for growth and become curious in the face of the unknown. When we have the courage to be present with “dark” emotions such as fear, despair, and grief, we can experience a kind of transformation that allows us to also feel gratitude, faith, and joy.

When we learn to be present with difficult emotions, we create that pause, or “moment of hesitation” to sit and be with what is there. I like to share the quote by Viktor Frankl, an Austrian psychologist: “Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom.”

When we learn to be with our emotions as they arise, we allow them to go through their natural life cycle and move through us, without getting stuck or having to come out in other ways.

So, to emphasize, the goal is NOT to make difficult feelings go away. It is about increasing our capacity to experience and bear intense emotions, without being swept away by them.

How we can learn to accept our emotions when they can be so upsetting and overwhelming, is through journaling, meditation, mindfulness practices, and counselling. Wishing you all good mental wellbeing - Veronica “Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.”

HELLY’S CELEBRITIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY

KATHARINE HEPBURN ‘America’s Glorious Jewel’ STORY (1940), THE AFRICAN QUEEN (1951), GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER (1967), LION IN WINTER (1968) ON GOLDEN POND (1981) and ONE CHRISTMAS (1994).

ever before have I written about a celebrity I didn’t befriend, interview, or at least meet privately or professionally. But today I will do exactly that and it won’t be my story, but that of PETER O’TOOLE who shared a great platonic love with KATHARINE HEPBURN from 1958 to the end of their lives.

Born of very progressive and wealthy parents in Connecticut in 1907, this fiercely independent actress is recorded as the GREATEST FEMALE STAR OF CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD CINEMA for over 60 years of leading roles in more than 50 movies, plus stage plays, TV films and Broadway productions. She won 4 ACADEMY AWARDS, more than any other person by 2020, with 12 nominations in all. And she often helped young actors like Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton, both debuting in major film roles, as in the 1968 movie below.

My personal favourites include HOLIDAY (1938), PHILADELPHIA

Pensive time with Peter

Whenever I met up with Peter on stage, on film sets and in his elegant Hampstead London home before my permanent return to Australia in 1992, there was never a time he did not bring his favourite lady into our conversation, who he called America’s Glorious Jewel. He absolutely worshipped Katharine, 25 years his senior and only ever referred to her as Kate. In his eyes Hepburn could do no wrong, even though the fiery actress always called him ‘pig’ and whacked him onto the floor on the film set of LION IN WINTER. Peter first meets Hepburn when he’s just 26 and she comes back stage after one of his 1958 London performances of THE LONG THE SHORT AND THE TALL, in a basic theatre without comfort. There are many anecdotes Peter recounts with glee, remembering each one with picturesque accuracy.

“I was in my dressing room. There were no lavatories and I was peeing in the sink when there was a bang at the door, ‘Can I come in?’ ‘Yes, for Heaven’s sake, shut the door,’ I said, facing the entrant with my back. But that voice! I withdrew quickly and pretended to wash my hands. And that’s how I met Kate!

“Since that day she never stopped being my advocate, championing my causes. We always had such fun what a delightful woman – the best in America. She was Spencer Tracey’s partner for 26 years, you know. They loved each other very much. Kate had

lost (66-year-old) Spencer to a heart attack in 1967, just after they finished WHO’S COMING TO DINNER together.”

Hepburn was the widow who was not allowed to mourn, as Spencer never divorced his wife, Louise, and the film studios insisted their relationship must remain hush-hush.

When Peter takes up a story, he relives everything as he speaks, groping for the words, mentally and physically, until his hands seem to grasp something solid out of the air, willing you to see it as he does.

“I was choosing actors for my film, LION IN WINTER, and without high hopes, I sent the script to Kate. The phone rang with that high-spirited voice and just five words: “DO IT BEFORE I DIE.” Kate was 61 at that time, Peter just 36.

But they portrayed the perfect screen couple with electricity that never stopped sparking throughout this powerful 1183 historical drama.

And Peter so remembers the exact day on this film set in which he played King Henry II, when Kate, as his Queen Eleanor, storms into his caravan. Even his voice becomes that of Hepburn:

“And she threw her right hand at me, which I ducked. Then she threw another one which I also ducked.

After that, I thought I had better let her have a little dig. I just had to know what was wrong. Well, she threw another one and it connected. Ha! I went sprawling and Kate stomped out of the caravan.

“I wondered what it was all about - nobody seemed to know. So, later in the day, when I was called to the set, I made sure I was wrapped in bandages from head to foot with lots of fake blood all over me and I came limping up to her, by which time Kate was howling with laughter. She said, ‘Never mind, pig. I only hit the people I love.’”

His words roll around the tongue like a Shakespearian recitation, confirming O‘Toole is always the actor, the

participator, never the spectator.

“But my point was why?” laughs the master of sound. “She had forgotten completely. And to this day (pause) she has not remembered. So I’ll never find out. Ah! My two Kates!”

How amazing that not only we mere mortals name our children after certain idols, but that they too, do the exact same thing with icons they admire. My old friend Stewart Granger named his daughter Tracey after Spencer Tracy, while Peter’s daughter is Kate.

O’Toole survived Hepburn by 10 years.

But like she had done with Spencer, she often nursed O’Toole mentally, emotionally and physically on his downward spiral from the results of the early decades of heavy smoking and drinking.

Kate and Spencer Lovers for 26 Years just lying on his chest, as family and friends filed by. And if I were a believer in the ancients’ religions of re-incarnation, I could well imagine our GLORIOUS KATE being present at that extraordinary moment in time to add her goodbye…..

guys get out there with your family and friends and enjoy what this beautiful area has to offer. Camping up Ocean Beach, heading up the passage to Caloundra in the boat, or cruising around Moreton Island in the boat for a week are all things that we can enjoy in the local area. There are so many awesome camping spots you can access in a boat or even better, having a boat big enough for a couple of swags or even better beds in it. That way you can get away from the noisy crowds. Over December and January with the increase in traffic throughout the passage and bay, always keep a good eye out for pretty much anybody and anything.

Kayakers, paddleboarders, jet skis, boats, yachts, swimmers, tubers, kite surfers, jetty jumpers, plus a few others thrown in as well. Another thing to be

aware of is the increase in animal activity in the bay and passage. It is early on in the storm season and already we have seen some wild weather systems and hot windy gusty days.

With so many people on the water over Christmas time, it can get pretty hard to get a fish. Best bet is to fish from late afternoon till early morning. During the day you can still get up the many passage creeks and find a quiet spot. The jacks and cod have been smashing baits and lures, with these hot humid days producing some nice fish out of the passage.

Working Live baits, lures and topwater the best bet of catching a mangrove Jack. The big flatties are also thick in the passage with anywhere from Buckley’s hole right up to the Caloundra bar are producing the goods. There are some beautiful spots up past Lime Pocket campsites and up past the mouth of Coochin Creek, where you will be pretty much by yourself. Pretty much any bait for the flatties there not that fussy. The summer whiting is also on the chew with live blood worms and yabbies being the only bait to really use. Whiting will definitely hit topwater or small plastics if worked in the right areas. Keep your eyes out also with trevally and big queenies potentially

Beach REPORT

Welcome to another beach report from Michael and Rick from Gateway Discovery Tours.

The track from the Woorim car park to the beach is really chopped up and the ruts are getting deeper and the sand is extremely powdery you will sink to the axles very quickly.

When you get onto the beach there is a tidal drop-off, so make sure you go down it straight not side-on. It is a nice drive at low tide just past the gun emplacement the old tree stumps are being exposed so be aware. The holidays are nearly here, we all know there will be a lot more people on our beach. So, when navigating please look out for the children that are not road conscious on the beach.

When heading up the beach as we all know the best time for travel is 2 hrs before or after 2 hrs from the top of the tide. This week we had a family whose vehicle overheated driving in the soft sand, we talked them through without coming out to recover them so don’t hesitate to call us on 0439 083 868 as we may be able to talk you out of trouble over the phone without a call out.

As it is getting hotter the lagoons are starting to lose some of their water so make sure you don’t drive into them as they are access restricted.

This week has seen a vehicle lose control and hit a tree caused by an inexperienced driver, please remember that the soft sand can cause your vehicle to move erratically anywhere. The inland track is not too bad as they have graded it in places recently. Remember to be safe when travelling on the beach and enjoy the National Parks it is a gazetted road with speed limits.

With the temperatures set to rise please make sure you take plenty of water so that if you get bogged you can stay hydrated until help arrives.

Although the film introduces a myriad of high-ranking players involved, the film is primarily about Gun’s willingness to risk her own professional and personal well-being in order to “blow the whistle” on this ruse.

OFFICIAL SECRETS

T

he timing for this movie release could not have been more remarkable.

This is a film about a “Whistleblower” named Katharine Gun, played by Keira Knightly. The film opens with Gun facing Court for breaching Britain’s Official Secrets Act. We then track back through the compelling events leading to that charge.

Gun, we learn, is employed as a Specialist British Intelligence Agent. In that capacity she reads a memo which deeply concerns her.

“Official Secrets” is not only about Gun’s courage but also about the courage of the journalists committed to reporting fact rather than spin.

Gavin Hood, the co-writer and producer of this film, was so committed to the accuracy of re-telling Gun’s story that he approached the real-life players, including Gun, for their endorsement of this film.

Knightly’s performance as Gun is stunningly convincing -supported by Ralph Fiennes playing Gun’s ardent defence attorney; Adam Bakri playing her devoted husband and Matt Smith as well as Rhys Ifans playing the investigative reporters willing to challenge journalist bias in order to convey truth.

Don’t allow the details of the political web distract you from this film’s overarching story of immense courage.

Dear Editor, Sir – Can we understand why the Government has not announced a state of emergency regarding the farmer’s plight. Every week, we hear of damaged families, farmers walking off their properties, dairy farms being lost (50, in Queensland, since the beginning of this year, reportedly). If the farmers can’t make it then the local communities are in trouble and then, must damage the whole of the Australian economy – we will all suffer. I am hugely disappointed with this Government in that they don’t seem to have sufficient compassion for

the bush. There appears to be money for many other projects – hard not to mention the proposed bonuses for our public servants but where is the money to invest in water distribution from the north, for example. Where is there any effort to control the price of stock food and available water.

I understand that, down south there is water supply in commercial hands and the price has gone from something like $150 a megalitre to around $1000.

Words can’t describe what one would think of those who would take such advantage – and there are many other injustices that farmers have to deal with.

Talk-back radio reveals the gravity of the situation that farmers and their allied communities face and I believe Government should have taken control of the situation long before this. Continuation of the problem will see more of

Then limit the number of supervised tourists, so they can be educated and enjoy what they find. Currently, people bring their own food and fuel, so don’t patronise local businesses. We would be better off without them, and so would our environment.
