In a 3 to 2 vote, Harrisonburg City Council passed the B1C rezoning request that allows the construction of The Lindsey — previously known as The Link — a four-story apartment building on the current Lindsey Funeral home plot at the entrance of historic downtown.

After over a year of debate and numerous changes made to the original plan in response to community feedback, The Lindsey still remained a contentious topic. Shown through the dozens of “no B1C” signs littering the lawns of downtown housing and buttons that flooded the council chambers for Tuesday’s meeting.

The Lindsey was brought to City Council after a July Harrisonburg Public Works Department meeting where the department tied in a 3-3 vote with an unfavorable recommendation, Deputy Director of Community Development Thanh Dang said.

In City Council’s third time reviewing the case after previously hearing the proposal in August 2025 and April 2026, The Lindsey provided amended proffers to appease issues raised

by Harrisonburg residents and Council Members.

The building’s height was reduced from six to four stories — from 75 feet to 52 — and added a range of 2,500 to 5,000 square feet of commercial space, available space for business use, Dang said.

Dang added that The Lindsey reduced the maximum of 180 units, creating 440 bedrooms from the previous 550, though this proffer only reduced studio apartments.

Despite this, Dang still said the four-bedroom units were “suited for college students,” calling them the “intended audience.”

The Lindsey also reduced parking spots to 320 spaces from 480. The proffers removed the previous parking agreement with the city, occupancy restrictions and reduced proffered donations toward traffic-calming measures and affordable housing.

The Lindsey incorporated new research in its proposal addressing the impact of the recently approved Madison Promise, which plans to expand JMU’s occupancy by 60% by 2040 and

ultimately reduce the number of students residing off campus to 4,673, Dang said.

“If JMU increases its supply of university-managed housing, then demand for off-campus student housing, as we know, we would expect that to change,” Dang said. “However, in staff’s opinion, we felt that the change would be felt differently in different locations.”

With this, local land-use attorney and The Lindsey representative Todd Rhea said that though The Linsdey wouldn’t necessarily keep businesses open downtown, it would bring a higher concentration of residents, causing more student involvement downtown and allowing for more walkability to JMU’s campus.

“Downtown Harrisonburg has highly inconsistent foot traffic patterns and limited parking,” Rhea said. “[The Link would bring] almost 500 new residents of any type within walking distance of downtown businesses, and creating a visual waypoint to draw people from campus to downtown is invaluable.”

Though there were other suggestions for the space, including a public park and R3 residential housing, Rhea said no other possibility would bring as much economic growth in Harrisonburg.

“The Lindsey property should be an economic engine for the city, not a vacant space frozen in time,” Rhea said.

Though public comment echoed previous sentiments of earlier meetings — issues with student housing, lack of affordable housing, increased traffic downtown, possibilities of better alternatives and aesthetic inconsistencies — council ultimately decided to approve the rezoning for the project.

“Harrisonburg is a city. We need to grow inward and, to some degree, upward, or we keep losing the people and the revenues and all of the infrastructure to the county,” councilwoman Laura Dent said.

City removes Flock cameras following community backlash Harrisonburg City Council unanimously voted to terminate the contract with Flock Safety July 28. Community members came together through an organization called Deflock Harrisonburg, gathering over 200 people at the City Council meeting to protest the cameras, according to a Deflock Harrisonburg press release.

During the meeting, the City Council approved the Automatic License Plate Recognition System Policy. This resolution prohibits the reinstatement of the Flock contract and the city’s use of ALPR technology.

Before the project was terminated, Harrisonburg installed approximately 30 mounted cameras around the city, said Harrisonburg Public Information Officer Michael Parks.

The cameras were primarily used to read license plates with Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) and were used by the Harrisonburg Police Department to track stolen vehicles and missing persons cases, according to Parks. However, community members raised concerns over what exactly the cameras were capturing.

“These Flock ‘safety’ cameras take pictures of every car that passes them. There was no public input when this decision was made,” Deflock Harrisonburg’s website reads.

Community members have expressed reservations about the possibility of being surveilled. However, Parks emphasized that Flock Safety has had a good impact on the City of Harrisonburg.

“City Council looked at the facts and said, ‘You know, this is a program that has done a lot of good when it comes to criminal investigative tactics in our community, but at the end of the day, it is not worth the privacy concerns,’” Parks said.

“As we saw how successful these cameras were in crime solving and recovering missing persons, stolen vehicles — that kind of thing — over the years, we added more,” Parks said.

Deflock Harrisonburg was a movement that started within the community. Parks highlighted how these community members showed up to City Council, met with council members and made change happen.

“I think sometimes students can forget that those elected officials … are their City Council members too,” Parks said. “And if they have a need, if they have a concern, if they have a question, they should reach out to those City Council members.”

The Edith J. Carrier Arboretum expands into East Campus, University Boulevard

JMU’s Edith J. Carrier Arboretum is undergoing a growth spurt, expanding from 63 to 110 acres, spreading its roots into East Campus and University Boulevard.

The expansion will be complete within the next 12 months, arboretum director Katie Rankin said. Currently, JMU is in the process of securing contractors and finalizing how to expand.

The expansion is funded in part by the Storm Smart Chesapeake Grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust and the U.S. EPA Region III to the tune of $163,410. The arboretum largely relies on donations for funding and generates some revenue through plant sales; however, it’s not funded by student fees.

“We proposed the expansion because we wanted to encourage JMU to reimagine how the university landscape supports all of the things that a university is supposed to be about: learning, sustainability, research, community engagement, stewardship [and] wellness,” Rankin said.

The expansion will include a 4.28-acre reforestation along University Boulevard and the arboretum’s border. This construction will be on newly stabilized soil after the road construction is complete. Contractors will plant 1,300 native trees on the road, and volunteers will plant hundreds of native shrubs.

In addition, the expansion plans for a seeded native meadow for soil stabilization, which will start as construction concludes, Rankin said.

JMU will commence soil stabilization on the arboretum hillside first, and move into the meadow when weather and equipment allow in the fall. The meadow will provide ecosystem services while the trees and shrubs grow, Rankin said.

Additionally, JMU will add 180 roadside trees along the street between the Spark Motel and Carrier Drive.

“We’re also really excited to have the East Campus land designated as part of the arboretum because it brings the arboretum much closer to where the students are,” Rankin said. “I see there’s a lot of potential benefits for students to participate, to learn, to research and to enjoy the space.”

Established in 1989, the arboretum has been an important resource for scholarly pursuit and public education, according to its website. Its wooded hills serve as a “living laboratory” for various STEM programs at JMU, according to its website.

The arboretum is open every day to all ages with free admission, providing various resources for visitors to educate themselves on the local ecology. “We hope that the students will be able to enjoy a beautiful landscape and begin to more fully understand … when you’re outside, you feel better; when the outside is healthy, that’s better for everyone,” Rankin said.

Taaza 2.0 Indian Cuisine takes over Tequila Taco Bar

By BELLA ARIST The Breeze After Tequila Taco Bar closed its doors last spring, Taaza 2.0 Indian Cuisine arrived in its place. The restaurant offers a wide selection of authentic Indian dishes and has served Roanoke for over 20 years before officially opening a second location in Harrisonburg on Aug. 14.

Indian cuisine has always offered a strong and flavorful selection. Different parts of India have their own styles of cooking, often including spices like turmeric, cumin, red chili and coriander.

Owner Nirav Savaj is originally from Gujarat, India, and has worked in the restaurant industry for 10 years. He worked at the Roanoke location for five years as a host, server, busser, cook and bartender.

In India, Savaj worked in software engineering and web development. He graduated from the American National University in Salem, Virginia, in 2017, then worked as an admissions representative for the University of Fairfax. Even while he worked those jobs, in his heart, Savaj felt he needed to fulfill his passion in the food industry.

“So far, I have enjoyed my time in Harrisonburg,” Savaj said. I just moved here because of the business and I love it. As more students start moving in, we can tell business is going to start picking up.”

The workers at Taaza 2.0 feel that “Harrisonburg doesn’t have a lot of Indian community and most of the students from JMU are from America,” Savaj said. JMU has a predominantly white population.

“We have new things on our menu that aren’t like the other Indian restaurants around here, like Chinese and American incorporated with Indian cuisine,” Savaj said.

Savaj acknowledged that some students have a limited budget, so he’s developing lunch specials that are more affordable. The buffet will also be opening soon and will give people a wide variety of food to choose from, he said.

“I feel confident about managing this location because of my knowledge from the different positions I have worked previously,” Savaj said.

Taaza 2.0 will be getting its liquor licenses in the next month. “We heard the previous restaurant here was always packed on the weekends because of the bar, so we plan on welcoming a similar environment,” Savaj said.

The restaurant is still finalizing its hours, but Savaj plans to host happy hour from 4-7 p.m. Monday through Friday, though hours aren’t official yet. On Fridays and Saturdays, Taaza will stay open until 2 a.m., closing off the restaurant area and serving finger foods at the bar with drinks.

The owner didn’t carry the same menu from the Roanoke location due to the chefs’ origins. In the Harrisonburg location, the chefs are from Mumbai, while the chefs in Roanoke are from southern India.

The Bombay Chinese dish is one of the chef’s specialties because it’s from the region where he was born.

The Indo-Chinese dish has smokyflavored noodles and chopped vegetables. Another unique dish hailing from the same region is the Indian-style burgers, chicken tikka and lamb tikka.

Taaza 2.0 is located on 1007 S Main St, Harrisonburg, right across from the Quad.

Student becomes famous from viral nutrition videos to who you let on campus.

JMU has let Starbucks, Panda Express, Dunkin’ and numerous other unhealthy options have a place on campus. These restaurants, in combination with Duke Deals, take people away from the dining halls where healthier options exist. There needs to be a greater focus on the dining halls and less on the unhealthy Duke Deals.

Zach Langsam, also known as Zlang25 on Instagram, is a sophomore dietetics major who uploaded his first reel roughly 200 days ago.

Langsam’s videos are raw, unedited combinations of nutrition advice as well as highlights of his day, such as seeing a family of geese by Newman Lake or an act of kindness or encouragement he observed from others.

“I’ve always been thinking of posting myself online, unedited, to improve my c o m m u n i c a t i o n s k i l l s ,” Langsam said. “So I said, ‘You know what, I’m just going to do it,’ and I’m very happy I did because ultimately my goal is to help myself and help others, and I don’t think there is a day where that can’t happen.”

Growing up, Langsam said he was overweight and bullied in school, and his parents weren’t very informed about

nutrition, which led him to have a negative relationship with food.

That began to change when Langsam saw a YouTube video about ingredients and healthier options in a grocery store.

“I had never thought about the ingredients in my food and found it very interesting,” Langsam said. “I wondered if I switched around some of the things I eat, how I would feel.

After making the switch, my health started improving.”

Langsam said that after he noticed improvements in his health, he continued to learn more about nutrition and was able to help his father reverse his prediabetes.

“I think good health is being able to live the life you want to,” Langsam said. “For some, that’s doing things like hiking, and for others, that’s being able to walk around and not be in pain.”

Langsam also said that to live a good, healthy life, there should be a focus on eating nutritious foods most of the time, but also understanding that there are exceptions.

“For example, if you go to Italy, are you going to meal prep all your stuff, or are you going to go get the authentic

pizza?” Langsam said. “That’s a memory you’re going to have.

It’s really about being able to live life fully, to do things you want and not be sick.”

Health and food

Today, not everyone can afford the healthiest food.

Langsam said that people are getting too caught up on “big health buzzwords” such as grass-fed and organic.

“You don’t need to buy the most expensive eggs, meats or fruits — they will still end up being 100 times better than ultra-processed fast foods because those cheaper ingredients are still very nutritious,” Langsam said.

Langsam also said that social media disguises certain foods as “health foods” such as diet ice creams and other heavily processed products.

“For the average person, if they see a bunch of ultraprocessed foods as healthy foods, that’s not what they need to be seeing,” Langsam said. “I think we need to be saying, ‘How can we make simple nutritious food taste good and work in your lifestyle?’”

When it comes to how JMU could improve its nutrition, Langsam said it comes down

Mental health

In addition to physical wellbeing, Langsam’s videos also focus on mental health. One of the biggest themes throughout his videos is the idea of being present, Langsam said. He practices being present by observing nature.

“There’s so much beauty around, and it really helps me because college can be stressful,” Langsam said. “For me, taking a minute to look at something you didn’t create is really cool and sets me in my place.”

With the fast-paced college lifestyle, people are often thinking, ‘what’s next?’ Langsam said, adding that many of us could do a better job at living in the moment.

“Sometimes it’s good to just live in the moment and not think 20 steps ahead,” Langsam said. “Ultimately, we only have the time we are in, and time is pretty valuable.”

Helpful or hoax: The rise of weight loss suppliments

The Breeze In an era where GLP-1 medications are the new craze for weight loss, a whole world of supplements meant to mimic GLP-1 medications have taken over social media, especially TikTok. GLP-1 medications lower blood sugar, slow digestion and reduce appetite. It is primarily prescribed to people with Type 2 Diabetes and people who struggle with obesity to assist with major weight loss.

Recently, a wave of alternative products such as patches, vitamins and powders have taken over TikTok Shop and are advertised to have similar effects to GLP-1 medications for weight loss. However, most of the products only contain certain vitamin mixes and herbal supplements that stimulate metabolic functions. A prime example is berberine, sometimes called ‘nature’s Ozempic.’

Berberine is a compound found in particular plants and has some control over the efficiency of metabolic functions, which may aid in weight loss. However, there is no major evidence that shows that it contributes to the same significant weight loss as GLP-1 medications, and little is known about its long-term effects, according to the Mayo Clinic and UCLA Health. Popular weight loss products marketed on TikTok, such as the LeeFar Cutting Mix and Kind Berberine Patches, use berberine as one of the main active ingredients, according to their websites.

It’s important to note that it’s generally not the supplement companies that are making the false advertisements. Most of their official TikTok Shop pages do not make any promises that their product will mimic the effect of GLP-1. Instead, these claims are often made by individuals promoting the products on TikTok who aren’t associated with the companies themselves.

Reel it in: Movie review | ‘The End of Oak Street’ both refreshingly new and comfortably familiar

Warning: This review contains minor spoilers “The End of Oak Street,” the newest film from David Robert Mitchell, is a sci-fi adventure that follows a family of four whose neighborhood has been transported back to the time of dinosaurs. Like the family, the film itself feels like it was pulled out of time, resembling the family adventure films of the ’80s and ’90s, like “Jurassic Park” and “Jumanji,” which the film draws inspiration from.

It creates a similar tone to those films by never taking itself too seriously and finding comedy within its concept. For example, one scene shows prehistoric tortoises blocking the road and staring into a car’s headlights like a deer.

It also never overexplains itself and instead establishes the rules of the world without feeling the need to answer every question the audience has. It ignores answering why it was their neighborhood or where the time-traveling portals come from.

These questions could lead to interesting ideas but choosing to ignore them lets the audience spend more time focused on the characters.

The film spends more time on the rocky relationship of the parents and how it affects their family. Denise Platt, played by Anne Hathaway, and her husband Greg Platt, played by Ewan McGregor, start the film headed toward divorce. Time travel acts as an ironic stand-in for the divorce, as many dysfunctional couples often wish to “go back to the way things were,” something the characters hope for as they search for a way to get back to their normal lives.

As the story goes on, the two continue to find new ways to fight and argue, even in the terrifying circumstances they’ve been thrown into. In this environment, it becomes more believable when their son leaves the safety of the home to find his pet dog.

This core adds emotional weight to an otherwise lighthearted adventure. It makes the characters feel familiar in a way that has the audience questioning how they would react in such a situation.

The cinematography also delivered. There’s multiple split diopter shots used ze in conversation ree eB h T scenes, a/ uev though illan V h each shot Kira serves a different purpose, keeping the visuals fresh while still remaining consistent.

When Denise speaks to one of her neighbors about a book she wrote that reflects a fantasy she has about leaving her family to have a more fulfilling life, the split diopter shots are used to keep the focus on both the characters having the conversation and the party outside the window that the rest of her family is at. This shows how the characters are not only talking about the book as if it’s completely fictional — Denise’s mind is gravitating towards her family because that’s what she was really writing about.

When the family has a conversation about what they think happened to their neighborhood, the same lens is used.

This time, it keeps each character in focus while the distance between them is blurred, making the emotional distance in their relationships appear as if it’s a physical distance in the room.

The movie also had an interesting way of showing the dinosaurs by forcing the audience to see the truly massive size of these prehistoric creatures. Since most of the film takes place indoors, the dinosaurs are often shown on screen through windows and doors.

This narrows how much can be seen at times, leaving the audience to use their imagination to figure out just how big they really are.

At one point, a dinosaur moves past the house and brushes up against it, but all that’s shown is a bunch of feathers that fill up a window frame.

The audience can’t be certain what kind of dinosaur it’s seeing, only that it’s big enough to tower over a house.

With a heartfelt and exciting story, told with empathy and some creative visual flair, “The End of Oak Street” is a fun blockbuster to end off the summer vacation with.

The race for JMU’s starting QB

With Week 1 in sight, the conversation surrounding every position group remains the same: Narrowing down a 105-player roster to the 22 players that will start against Liberty on Sept. 5.

Large, talented rooms like the wide receivers and the running backs can’t operate without a quarterback to get the ball to them.

The four-person QB room is led this season by quarterback coach Aaron Pflugrad. Pflugrad works strictly with the QBs rather than as an offensive coordinator, which fourthyear quarterback Camden Coleman called a “noticeable difference” from previous seasons.

“This is my first time having that, and he has done a lot on the mechanical level with us,” Coleman said. “Sometimes little last-minute details get overlooked because you’re worried about every single position on the field and you kind of bypass the quarterback, so having coach [Pflugrad] here to really harp on those things — it’s definitely been a nice touch.”

Coleman’s name has stayed consistent in the starter conversation. Though he didn’t see action in his first year at JMU, in his first two years at Richmond, Coleman made 18 appearances, tallying 31 touchdowns, racking up 3,192 passing yards and rushing for 314 more.

“I think [Coleman’s] time at Richmond gives him a certain confidence that he knows he can play at a high level,” head coach Billy Napier said. “He’s improved dramatically as a passer; I’m impressed with what I’ve seen so far.”

Vying for the job alongside Coleman is third-year QB JC Evans. Through his two years as a Duke, Evans made six appearances, putting up three touchdowns and earning the Boca Raton Bowl Offensive MVP, JMU’s first bowl win in program history.

Evans is the only QB who has seen live in-game action at JMU, which pushes him into a leadership role. “[I’m just] stepping into that leadership role and being as vocal as I possibly can be,” Evans said. “Each and every day just trying to be a little bit better than the person I was yesterday and bring somebody along with me at the same time.”

Napier has high confidence in both Coleman and Evans’ abilities to fulfill the starting position.

“Camden and JC stand out at this point,” Napier said. “Their knowledge, their ability to execute [and]

communicate, the leadership piece — probably the No. 1 attribute at quarterback is the ability to influence others and to increase the confidence of the group, and both guys are doing that right now.”

Though Evans and Coleman stand out as the frontrunners, third-year QBs Arrington Maiden and first-year Tanner Vibabul are seeing the same reps.

“The main thing is this [program] is a meritocracy,” Pflugrad said. “We let those guys know, ‘You come back, you’re going to get an opportunity through competitive reps to see whether we’re the starter or not.’ That’s the beauty about our practice is the tempo that we move at, the efficiency that we move at. When we get it all said and done, they’re going to have a full season of reps.”

With the competitive nature that surrounds trying to secure a starting spot, Coleman relies on the brotherhood of the quarterback room to motivate each other.

“It’s so easy in competition situations to kind of be against each other, but I think as a whole, we’ve meshed because of it,” Coleman said. “I think every player understands how important football is and the team is — at the end of the day, we know to put the team first. Competition is only good for the entire team … so being able to push each other in that way and sharpen iron has made it easy.”

Standing less than two weeks from opening day, Napier said, “Each day I think we get more and more information. We’re not quite ready to make a decision, but I do think that every day will contribute to that. We’re gonna work the players this week and let those guys go play.”

‘Taking it to another level’

Weathersby reinforces JMU football’s defense in new leadership role

Returning fourth-year linebacker Gannon Weathersby is stepping up as a leader on JMU football’s defense, following in the footsteps of former linebacker and reigning Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year Trent Hendrick.

“He was a sophomore when I was a freshman, so when he was learning, I was learning with him,” Weathersby said.

With multiple considerations of which player will play with the green dot — a way for a coach to commicate with a player in game through their helmet — head coach Billy Napier said Weathersby’s ability to play on every down contributed to their choice to give him the green dot.

“We feel good about his matchup ability; his ability to stay out there on third and not have a substitution issue there would be the main thing,” Napier said. “Certainly, that reflects Gannon’s ability to communicate his intelligence.”

Last season, Hendrick wore the green dot for the defense.

Weathersby said that preparing and learning with Hendrick was why he was successful last season.

“What I learned of him, pick[ing] his brain,” Weathersby said. “Understanding schemes and just taking it to another level when it comes to preparation.”

Weathersby also said Hendrick’s communication is why he can talk to fellow linebackers and the entire defensive line about being on the same page and understanding the offense.

Weathersby’s position coach, Josh Linam, said he’s taking “leaps and strides forward,” and growing in his “knowledge base,” since learning a new coaching staff in the spring.

“In the spring, he was on step one of trying to figure out the system and where to line [up], and how to execute, and

then understand what the call was,” Linam said. “Now he’s understanding the call, so you can go back to breaking down offense and what type of indicators he’s getting.”

Weathersby said the defense’s biggest improvements since spring practices have been its sense of “togetherness” and understanding of the playbook.

“When you’re out there on defense, it just comes down to execution and then the effort and attitude,” Weathersby said. “I would say our attitude, our strength to the ball, and [we are] just understanding the defense to just another level [has improved].”

Entering his fourth year at JMU, Weathersby has faced most of the teams on JMU’s schedule already. With 63 new transfers and players, Weathersby will look to pass on that experience, giving the newcomers familiarity with their opponents.

“It doesn’t matter what their record is. It’s a rivalry, and what we did last year, obviously, we got a target on our back,” Weathersby said. “So, [they] got to come with it and keep competing.”

A question fans may have for Weathersby is what face paint he will wear this season — a tradition he sports every game.

He said he has a “few ideas,” but it will be a surprise.

JMU’s Week 1 matchup with Liberty is quickly approaching for Sept. 5 at home. Weathersby is excited for fans to see the group as a team for the first time, he said.

“Out the gate, Liberty, it’s going to be a dogfight,” Weathersby said. “It’s going to be a very competitive game, and I’m ready to rock and roll.”

New JMU field hockey coach ‘builds off ’ retired Coach Morgan’s legacy Alyssa Parker Rosenblum steps into first head coaching role

After former JMU field hockey head coach Christy Morgan retired last spring, new head coach Alyssa Parker Rosenblum is “building off” Morgan’s established culture, she said.

“I feel very fortunate to step into such a great culture and a great foundation that Christy created over the years,” Parker Rosenblum said. “I feel very lucky with the squad that we have and the culture that’s been created.”

Senior midfielder/forward Brynna Hill said Parker Rosenblum has “brought in a new energy” and picked up where the team left off with Morgan.

“Coach Morgan set that foundation, and Alyssa’s just carrying it while adding her own special touch to it,” Hill said.

With that, Parker Rosenblum has brought in new ideas and systems to the team.

“I think Coach Alyssa has just brought in so many great drills and knowledge to the sport that JMU is now picking up on, and we’re taking in everything that she’s saying out on the field,” senior midfielder Ava Drexler-Amey said.

Parker Rosenblum is stepping into her first head coaching position after filling assistant coach positions at Saint Joseph’s in 2020-21 and most recently UVA from 2021-26.

“I think previously, when I was at UVA, [UVA head coach Ole Keusgen] did a great job of exposing me to the role of a head coach,” Parker Rosenblum said, “so it really doesn’t feel that much different.”

Stepping into the new role, Parker Rosenblum said it was a “no-brainer” to keep associate head coach Morgan DeMann and assistant coach Ethan Larsen on staff.

“I knew going into it that the JMU community really respected [Larsen] and [DeMann],” Parker Rosenblum said.

“I knew that the team really liked them and learning from them in the past.”

Drexler-Amey said Parker Rosenblum is working well with Larsen and DeMann.

“Alyssa’s bringing great knowledge to them. They’re bringing great knowledge to [Parker Rosenblum],” DrexlerAmey said. “It’s a great trio.”

As a new head coach, Parker Rosenblum said everyone has been “really welcoming” to her.

“We’re only two weeks in, but it feels like I’ve been here for a while,” she said.

Parker Rosenblum said she made an effort over the summer to get to know the new recruiting class with phone calls and FaceTimes.

“Just knowing each other as people before stepping on the field, I think, kind of set us up for success.”

Ahead of the season, the team played a scrimmage against Parker Rosenblum’s alma mater, Maryland, which she said was a “fun challenge.” “[Maryland head coach Missy Meharg] recruited me, and then I played for her,” Parker Rosenblum said. “She’s a legend, so to be able to coach against her was a fun experience, as a head coach against the head coach.”

Parker Rosenblum will lead the team for the first time on Aug. 28 at 3 p.m. against Temple at neutral site College Park, Maryland. “[The team is] very excited. I’m very excited too,” Parker Rosenblum said.

Your guide to being a better roommate KATIE MAE YETTER | Opinion Editor College roommates are a strange concept when you really think about it. You pack up your entire life and move away from home, then are expected to coexist with a complete stranger.

When you walk through that dorm door, you honestly don’t have a clue what you’re walking into. Whether you’re best friends with your roommate or you only exchange two words, there is a rule of thumb for civilized living:

Cleanliness

don’t have to ask permission to have friends over, but just make it known. If you’ll be in the common area, be respectful of others. Control the volume and understand your other roommates may be on the other side of the door trying to work or sleep. Having friends and significant others over occasionally is different than making them feel like an extra person is living with them.

Ask before using someone else’s things. What’s yours is mine is not applicable unless specifically stated. That being said, try to be giving and share.

If you buy milk, let others use it so there aren’t five other jugs of milk in the fridge at once. There are ways to be respectful and also have your own space.

Give space

If your roommates’ doors are shut, just leave them alone. You never know when someone is having a bad day and wants to be left alone. If you want to see others, leave your door

open, go to the common area or ask to hang out. At least with my roommates, a closed door means doing work, on the phone or sleeping. You will get to hang out, but you don’t need to be going in and out of each other’s rooms all day, every day.

Set boundaries

Having roommates is tricky, and you need to set boundaries almost immediately. Tell them what you need and want from the year. Let them know when you have early classes, long nights and stressful academic weeks.

Set times to spend with your roommates and expectations of cleaning, laundry and groceries.

Communicate what you need from them, like quiet hours and privacy. Roommates are a fun experience as long as you have clear-cut expectations.

Branch out

There seems to be a misconception that your roommates need to be your best friends. There’s nothing

wrong with being best friends with your roommate, but that doesn’t need to be the standard.

It’s OK to just coexist. You will find other friends. JMU has over 400 organizations, and there is something for everybody. If you can’t find common ground with your roommate, you will find it with someone else. Be understanding, be kind and just peacefully coexist.

The bottom line: be a good roommate. Take out the trash, don’t scream at all hours of the night and don’t leave your laundry in for days on end. You’re not the only one living here; act like it.

Whether you’re living in a dorm or an apartment, the need to clean your space is inevitable.

There are going to be dishes, dust and spills. Don’t be lazy. If you use a pan, just wash it. There’s no cleaning fairy, so don’t treat your roommate like one. Take out the trash, unload the dishwasher, wipe down the counters — just be a helping hand. There shouldn’t have to be a chore chart for you to help out.

Communication

This is the key to a civil household. Talk to each other.

If you’re going to be out late, let everyone else know so they can leave a light on. If you go out of town, tell them where you are. If something is bothering you, just let it be known. It’s better to say it so you can hash it out instead of letting it fester.

Your roommates are not mind readers, they will not pick up on your invisible signals. Save yourself before you get angry texts and slammed doors.

Skepticism sucks: be superstitious Kirah Villanueva / The Breeze

CHARLES-NICOLAS OWEN | Breeze columnist Astrology has become an extraordinarily ordinary part of contemporary life.

You might not believe that Mercury retrograding explains why your first week of classes has gone poorly, but odds are, you know someone who does.

You might even find the suggestion ridiculous, and even if you’ve never read your birth chart, you probably still know your sign. Some may roll their eyes at manifestation, crystals, tarot or energies while still occasionally wondering whether there might be something to them.

We can be technologically sophisticated and a little superstitious at the same time. More than that, we need to be.

Superstition is usually treated as the enemy of skepticism. To be skeptical is to demand evidence; to be superstitious is supposedly to abandon it, or apply it haphazardly. As someone who grew up in pursuit of goblins, fairies and other diminutive spirits through the woods and the mountains, I have never found the impulse to imagine a world much stranger than our own as something particularly irrational. If anything, I have always suspected that the willingness to entertain the superstitious is one of the better ways of remaining attentive to what we have not yet learned to see.

Curiosity abounds between the familiar and the strange in the land of superstition.

The imagination does its work there. In his introduction to “Faith, Hope and Poetry,” the contemporary English poet Malcolm Guite considers the imagination as “a truthbearing faculty.” I’m rather certain that Guite doesn’t mean that imagination makes whatever we wish to be true. Rather, the imagination can take hold of aspects of reality that blithe skepticism alone has difficulty comprehending, let alone experiencing.

Now, skepticism can mean refusing to believe

something simply because an authority tells you it’s true. There is a particular kind of modern skepticism that has become almost indistinguishable from scientism. If a claim can’t be measured, replicated or independently verified, we’re encouraged to regard it as meaningless. That skepticism has its virtues. It protects us from bad-faith actors, weaselly arguments and the comforting indulgence of believing whatever we would like to be true. Skepticism can become its own kind of dogmatism when it assumes that whatever can’t yet be explained can’t possibly signify anything.

A healthy sort of superstition combats such dogmatism in a way that grants permission for us to remain curious. Its appeal isn’t necessarily that it gives us certainty.

Astrology, tarot, crystals and the rest of the modern spiritual marketplace are often touted as evidence that young people have simply abandoned reason.

I think we’re unsatisfied with the assertion that we live in a world without magic. Asserting the loss of enchantment makes this hunger for wonder manifest in twisted appeals to nostalgia, hyperrationality and a Terminator-esque, misanthropic attitude.

Superstition, and astrology especially, says, in effect, that the universe might contain patterns we haven’t learned how to read. Whether those patterns actually exist is another question, but what matters is that the possibility remains open. What makes astrology so compatible with contemporary spiritual skepticism is that it asks remarkably little of an

institution, and is itself a sort of skepticism of capital-R “Religion.” You can distrust organized religion without becoming convinced that the universe is spiritually empty. You can remain skeptical of authority while remaining curious about transcendence.

But what do we do with that curiosity? The answer may not be to become more superstitious, but rather more attentive and more present. The superstition I advocate for is the ability to doubt without becoming cynical and to remain open to a world that may be stranger and more meaningful than we can presently explain. At the same time, we should resist making that wonder entirely our own (my sign, my chart, my journey), because there is something lonely about building a private little cosmos in the corner of our rooms. Meaning becomes something real only when it is shared.

We should all learn to be a little more superstitious.

While we still work with a skepticism sharp enough to recognize a charlatan, we cultivate an imagination open enough to recognize mystery. The world is full of more meaning than we have ever learned to see, and we were never meant to see it alone. We don’t need less superstition; rather, we are best when we’re not superstitious alone.
