JMU student embarks on year-long service trip teaching English in Spain By ABBY CHURCH The Breeze
It’s often heavily emphasized that college students must follow a “perfect plan” once they throw their caps: get the degree, get into grad school and get the job. However, senior psychology major Cooper Weinberger is taking a detour off the beaten path to do something he’s always dreamt of. Following graduation, Weinberger’s embarking on a year-long trip to Spain, where he’s going to get his certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). many applications and several phone calls, Weinberger accepted a spot in the Teacher Training Madrid program. “I chose [the program] because I could get the Spanish lessons throughout the year — that was what I really wanted,” Weinberger said. “They also help with the visa process a lot, and I like how once I arrive, I’m immediately starting the TEFL class. I thought that would be a great way to meet people.” While in Spain, Weinberger hopes to teach English to children in a fun way by using humor throughout his teaching. Along with the hope to make an impact on others, he hopes the trip impacts him too. “I’m very excited, but I’m also really anxious about the experience,” Weinberger said. “By the end of the year, I want to be more comfortable

with myself and feel more confident in traveling, and I also want to speak Spanish fluently.” Weinberger stresses the notion of following dreams, taking opportunities and doing the things he’s passionate about. “I never have known what I wanted to do with my life and I still don’t, and that’s okay,” Weinberger said. “By the time other people — juniors, sophomores or first years — graduate, I hope they’re not stressed out about their perfect, ideal plan because that probably won’t happen. Moving across the world to an unfamiliar place, putting student loans on hold and leaving behind friends and family would sound terrifying to most college students. However, senior English major Liz Ferguson will embrace these changes by spending two years in Togo, a country in West Africa, as a Peace Corps volunteer. “I’m just excited for lifelong relationships that

No, it’s not the tech crew, the director or even the stage crew, but the theatre’s marketing team. Following his graduation in May, Chris Sanderson, a theatre and media arts and design double major, will be the 2017-18 Marketing and Multimedia apprentice for the Studio Theatre in Washington, D.C. Utilizing the skills he learned in SMAD, Sanderson will assist the marketing
team with upcoming shows by doing a mix of graphic and web design. Although Sanderson applied to many apprenticeships in Chicago and California, he accepted an offer from Studio Theatre, a program he first heard about in high school. “Studio Theatre was an easy process to go through for me because it was exactly the job that I was looking for and I was already excited about the work that they do,” Sanderson said. According to Sanderson, the theatre creates a whole new level of intimacy with its work. “I recently saw a production of ‘Hand To God’ there where the audience was fully immersed [in]

will come out of this,” Ferguson said. “For things that I will learn about myself and about the world at large.” During her time as a volunteer, Ferguson hopes to learn skills to prepare her for a career in humanitarian aid. “I think that I will learn a lot more from the community there than I will ever teach them,” Ferguson said. Although she considered many options for after graduation, including graduate school and

Not only is this work exciting to Sanderson, but he hopes that this will help him network in the D.C. area so that he can secure a permanent position at the Studio Theatre or a surrounding theatre. “I’m excited to get the chance to live and work in Washington, D.C. at a theatre that is willing to push the boundaries and try new and daring things,” Sanderson said. A lifetime of learning Professor reflects on time at JMU before retirement

When asked what year professor Robert Hanson embarked on his journey at JMU, he smirked and said, “Well all you’d have to do is subtract 52 from 2017.” This lighthearted attitude and love for math are two qualities this highly respected professor is taking to his retirement in May of 2017. Hanson received his degree in mathematics at Virginia Tech. When he came to teach at
JMU in 1965 — if the subtraction was done correctly — there were less than 5,000 students and no interstate dividing the technical and liberal arts worlds. With the 50-plus years he’s spent at JMU, Hanson admits his favorite class to teach is still calculus, even if students might not agree. “When you’re teaching and a student isn’t getting it, then suddenly the light dawns and they say they understand … it’s such a rewarding experience for you,” Hanson said. It’s hard to believe that my four years of college have already gone by, but it’s even harder for me to believe that it was only four years ago that “Harlem Shake” went viral and I was shaking it in a banana costume in my high school parking lot. It’s funny how we can hate songs so vehemently when they’re popular and endlessly played on the radio, yet get a little misty-eyed when we hear them again years later. So that’s what I’m here to do: Get you to reminisce over what were hopefully the best four years, by recalling the songs you absolutely couldn’t escape during your college career. “Timber” by Pitbull ft. Ke$ha As I recall, it was virtually impossible to walk into a party without hearing someone shout-sing “It’s going down, I’m yelling timber.” Luckily, this song pretty much died after my sophomore year, which is good because I know approximately zero people who enjoy Pitbull in a non-guilty pleasure way. “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea During my sophomore year, I lived in an apartment above a group of senior guys who would play “Fancy” at any — and I mean any — hour of the day or
night. The number of times I woke up at 3 a.m. on a Wednesday to my bed shaking to the familiar bass of Iggy’s hit song is unreal. Way to live it up during your last year, dudes. “Royals” by Lorde
Maybe I wasn’t woken up in the middle of the night by this song, or heard it endlessly at parties, but “Royals” had a near-constant presence throughout my freshman year. The main offender of overplaying this song was Market One. Now no longer in existence (R.I.P.), Market was famous for playing music exclusively from Top 40 stations. So every time I wanted Sbarro (read: every day), my ears were subjected to the crooning sounds of a girl younger than me mourning the luxuries of the rich and famous. “Wake Me Up” by Avicii Before The Chainsmokers blew all the pop-EDM competition out of the water, Avicii was the man to whom everyone turned to provide the next poppin’ party hit. “Levels” and “Hey Brother” were massive hits as well, but “Wake Me Up” was absolutely inescapable. Whenever I visited my friends in their Village dorms, this song was sure to be blasting from someone’s suite. “Trap Queen” by Fetty Wap I distinctly remember this song being
intensely popular around the time of ESPN’s College GameDay, thanks to hearing it blast across the Quad at 6 a.m. after I’d had a solid three hours of snoozing. Pair that with all of the “hey what’s up hello” Instagram posts that popped up around that time, and the song had a lasting impression on me. “We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus I remember sitting on my freshman dorm-room bed when Miley Cyrus’ album “Banger z ” droppe d. My roommate and I were eager to add new Miley songs to our “going out” playlist since we’d long since worn out “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball,” but the rest of the album pretty much lacked other heavy beat-drop hits, and we chalked it up to another time Miley failed us that year. For reference, this was also the year that she performed with the infamous foam finger at the MTV Video Music Awards with Robin Thicke. There are a ton more songs that make me reminisce about the last four years, but they’re largely specific to me and my friend group. The trees framing the mountains look the same. Despite the fact that they’re seen from a window in a brand-new building on campus, the view is the same as it was 22 years ago. Olivia Driver was born in Rockingham Memorial Hospital. The Student Success Center opened in its place on JMU’s campus in the fall of 2014, and the Health and Behavioral Studies building opened in the fall of 2016. Olivia, a senior nursing major, has spent much of her time at JMU studying in close proximity to where she was born. “It’s just honestly been a blessing — I wouldn’t go back and change a thing,” Olivia said. “I’ve loved my time here, it’s been amazing to go to a school where I was born, and it’s just the craziest thing to me to look out of a window when I’m in class ... of the same view that [my parents] were looking at the day I was born. I think that’s the coolest thing ever.” Chris Driver, Olivia’s father, didn’t expect Olivia to go into nursing but supports her completely. “It’s what she’s always wanted to do,” Chris said. “We have pictures of her when she was four or five years old playing as a nurse, and she said she wanted to do it back then. Never thought it would evolve to it, but she has, and we’re proud of her.” Olivia did her capstone clinical at RMH, and plans to continue working there. She currently works with the Postanesthesia Care Unit, but hopes to eventually work in the emergency room at RMH. Olivia likes the idea of staying close to her roots in Harrisonburg because she feels that despite being so close to home, she’s found her own place because of the JMU community. “It’s really been awesome,” Olivia said. “It’s great to be able to work at the hospital that I was born at. Even though it’s a different building than what I was born at, it’s still the same hospital. It’s just amazing to me to feel like I’ve come full circle from being born here and now I get to work here.” According to Olivia, the combined experience of her capstone clinical with her established roots helps her relate to the people she works with.
“In this area, it’s a lot of not what you know, it’s who you know,” Olivia said. “When people find out I’m from this area they’re like, ‘Oh I knew your great-grandfather, I know your uncle, I know your mom,’ and I love that. It lets me connect to them in a way they couldn’t connect to someone if they weren’t from here. It almost makes them feel safer with me as their nurse because they feel a better connection with me.” Cricket Driver, Olivia’s mom, is originally from Harrisonburg. Cricket’s grandmother attended Madison College and her grandfather helped put a stone into the original hospital in which Olivia was born. While Cricket originally encouraged Olivia to go out of state to gain different perspectives in college, she feels that staying in Harrisonburg was the right choice. “We are just totally indebted and grateful that she came to JMU, has had the experiences that she’s had,” Cricket said. “She’s had a lot of growing and we’re thrilled. As parents, we couldn’t be happier for the outcome.” Cricket and Chris hadn’t been back to see HBS since it was built until recently, but they acknowledge the changes to Harrisonburg every time they think of SSC. They expressed what they think about when they see the development of the buildings. “Where has 22 years gone, that’s what I think about,” Cricket said. “It’s amazing to me that she has two more classes or two more shifts … at the hospital and her capstone, and then she’s graduating. It’s just, where did they go? I advise anybody to enjoy each minute with their child because it goes by very quickly.” Despite the 22 years that have passed since Olivia was born, the family is still very tight-knit. They frequently look back at the decades spent visiting JMU when Olivia was growing up. “We have a video, we watched it the other night, it’s a video of the day she was born,” Chris said. “Looking out of these front windows, looking down onto the street and now looking back at it … It’s changed, but it’s still Harrisonburg, it’s still JMU, it’s great.” CONTACT Emma Korynta at breezenews@gmail.com.

biggest achievements at JMU to be the General Education program he helped create for the university, he also takes pride in his role as an adviser. “My biggest accomplishment has been surviving,” Hanson said with a laugh. “Actually it’s been my work with freshman advising that I’ve put most of my time and effort into.” During his time in the mathematics department, Hanson has influenced a wide range of faculty and students. “There’s no doubt that Bob Hanson has been an excellent mentor for the students,” Jim Sochacki, a professor of mathematics, said. “I mean the students just love him. He’s been involved in freshman orientation, funds drives to raise money for the students going to college — he’s involved in a lot and he’s good in the classroom. He’s a dedicated lecturer and he takes his job seriously.” Brenda Wilkinson, an administrative assistant for the math department, has been working alongside Hanson for 25 years. “In all these years, if I had a question if the department head wasn’t in, he’s who I would go to first and sometimes even if the
department head was here, I’d still go to him first,” Wilkinson said. “I’ve always worked very close with him, matter of fact, he’s actually on speed dial on my phone and he has been for a long, long time.” Hanson says his last couple of weeks here feel close to something

like “senioritis,” but he already has plans for the next big part of his life. “I am going to go home to Staunton and begin straightening up my home,” Hanson said. “I’m going to start working on things that I’ve put off to work at JMU. That’s my first step, but who knows
what I’ll do after that.” Hanson dedicated a tremendous amount of time to the university, and now must figure out how to turn that hard work and focus on himself, something he has a hard time doing, since he’s put his students first throughout his career. “I think he’ll be missed, but on the other hand, I think he probably needs to take time to think about himself,” Sochacki said. “He’s done so much for JMU and the community that I think it’s a good idea for him to think about himself and reflect on his career and enjoy his golden years.” Hanson graciously denied any type of celebration for his retirement. He enjoyed his half-century here at JMU, but wanted to leave subtly and not receive praise for his dedication to his career.
