How many people who walked the Quad on JMU’s campus can now say they are a television anchor at the “Worldwide Leader in Sports”?

The answer is one.

The undergraduate commencement speaker this year is Lindsay Czarniak, who graduated from JMU in 2000 with a major in journalism and a minor in studio art and is now a distinguished figure at ESPN. “I take it as a huge honor because this graduating class, they are about to embark on a journey that, to me, doesn’t feel so long ago,” Czarniak said. “I think there are things that I wish I would have known when I was in those shoes, so I’m really looking forward to hopefully inspiring some people with that.”

Czarniak is currently the solo anchor of the daily 6 p.m. airing of ESPN’s “SportsCenter,” a role she began back in January.

She was introduced to the world of sports journalism while growing up in Centreville, Virginia. Her father, Chet, was a sports reporter and editor at USA Today in McLean, Virginia.

But it was her time spent at JMU that helped set her on a career path in journalism. She studied in the School of Media Arts and Design (SMAD).

Marilou Johnson, a professor and the director of SMAD, had Czarniak as a student in her broadcast journalism class during the fall semester of 1999.

It was a practicum for Johnson’s class that began to pave the way for Czarniak. “[Lindsay] came in here wanting to be a journalist,” Johnson said. “I’m not even sure she did a sports package … [but] because she came from a family with her dad involved in sports, she kind of knew how it would work.”

Professors reflect on time at JMU as they prepare to move on

Tarek Zidan, an adjunct social work professor and Ph.D. candidate, has experienced life in many different places. Zidan has enjoyed his time at JMU since he arrived last year and, in his final days, he’s continuing to appreciate it.

Born in Egypt, Zidan became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2010, and lives with his wife and three children in Fairfax County. After attending Howard University in Washington, D.C., he came to JMU on a one-year fellowship in fall 2014 and spent the year teaching a class called Social Work Research Methods.

“I love it,” Zidan said. “I was very lucky to be selected, I love the student body and the Harrisonburg environment. I’ve gotten a lot of support.”

While he had experience teaching in Colorado, Zidan believes that he has learned a lot in his apprenticeship at JMU. “Being here has really enhanced my teaching abilities,” Zidan said. “Some of it is that I have a really great group to work with.”

He appreciated seeing his students learn, and considered their projects among his favorite memories. “[I enjoy] seeing the students really grasp the idea of research and learn how to do a project,” Zidan said. “It’s my favorite moment to see what they’ve learned, what I’ve taught them.”

Zidan now has a one-year fellowship at Smith College in Massachusetts, where he’ll be assisting graduate students. He’ll be finishing his dissertation in that time, and looks forward to serving more students.

“As a professor, teaching is like planting a garden of flowers and roses,” Zidan said. “You wait for the spring when seeing the cherry blossom come out. That’s exactly like seeing students learn.”

Laura Cambriani When Italian professor Laura Cambriani first came to JMU, she didn’t imagine it would leave such a positive impression on her.

Born and raised in Rome, she came to the United States to teach foreign language in 2007, and began her teaching career as the first JMU professor to teach Portuguese.

“I started out teaching Portuguese 101 and 102 in my first semester, and it was a lot of fun,” Cambriani said. “My classes then were a little bit smaller, and a lot of students had traveled

to Brazil, so working with them was a rich experience.”

Growing up with an Italian father and a Brazilian mother, Cambriani was raised speaking primarily Italian. When the foreign language department hired Lillian Feitosa, a native Portuguese speaker, in 2009, Cambriani dedicated herself to teaching Italian.

While Cambriani has enjoyed teaching Italian, her first years teaching Portuguese are among her favorite memories.

“My students were a lot of fun,” Cambriani said. “I didn’t imagine it was possible for me to teach it, but they were such a nice group and I thank JMU for giving me this amazing chance.

It’s part of me.”

Cambriani believes the opportunities to be introduced to new ideas and experiences were some of the best parts of the job.

“I’ve been extremely lucky,” Cambriani said.

“With this job I’ve been able to travel, and that has helped me to learn about new cultures and languages and meet different people.”

While Cambriani adores the students that she teaches, one important thing she wants to change is the enrollment capacity, which she believes is too high.

“My class right now focuses a lot on culture, which I love,” Cambriani said. “But with 20 students, I feel like I cannot offer all of them a good understanding. It’s too many, it’s too high.”

For Cambriani, Harrisonburg is the first and only part of the U.S. where she has lived and worked. She took the opportunity to become a learning partner for the alternative spring break program in 2009, and credits this to her understanding of the community.

“It was a great experience,” Cambriani said.

“If you only know JMU and your coworkers, you miss out, and you don’t get to see how different the city is from JMU and its students.”

Currently, Cambriani is in the U.S. on a work visa sponsored by the university. She doesn’t have a green card, and because her visa is close to expiration, she has chosen to resign. She plans to return to Italy, but is unsure of what the future holds for her.

“I want to be happy,” Cambriani said.

“Obviously you need a job, and unemployment is high in Italy and my job hardly exists, so I’m working more on my personal life and well-being as I prepare to go back to Italy. I have to be positive.”

ith graduation right around the corner, seniors are trying to cap off their time at JMU the right way — with a standout design.

“I love traveling and I love the beach,” Morgan Kelly, a senior health sciences major, said. “I thought that a compass would be a great idea to put on my cap because I really like what it symbolizes — direction, transition and adventure.”

After four years of college, seemingly both long and short, decorating a graduation cap can have a lot of symbolic meaning to it.

“I consider myself a very colorful person,” Kori Sulewski, a senior business management major, said. “I used the quote, ‘Life is better when you’re laughing,’ on my cap; it’s pretty characteristic of my time here at JMU.” In addition to quotes and designs, seniors find it important to include the organizations they have been involved with.

“I have ‘MSA love’ written on the borders,” Monica Chowdhury, a senior biotechnology major, said. “I’ve changed a lot as a person through college and MSA [Muslim Students Association] has changed

me the most.”

Others designed their caps with their futures in mind.

“‘In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun,’” Olivia Hepler, a senior interdisciplinary liberal studies major, said.

“That’s what I put on my cap to carry me through post-grad. I loved Mary Poppins growing up, and it also connects with what I want to do later on with teaching.”

have power to them.

“My cap reads, ‘Difficult roads lead to beautiful destinations,’” Becca Jones, a senior communication science and disorders major, said. “My journey at JMU started off really rough but I’ve found that it has turned into a beautiful destination.

I’m still on that difficult road, but I know that just means there’s going to be something beautiful at the end for me.”

As graduation rears its bittersweet head, seniors are experiencing a range of sentiments about leaving JMU. “It’s a melting pot of emotions,” Jones said. “I’m scared but I’m also excited. I know there’s something great out there and I know I haven’t found it yet.”

Leaving the place students have called home for four years seems both difficult and intriguing.

“It doesn’t seem real to me,” Kelly said.

“It’s overwhelming, but it’s a good overwhelming. JMU is such a great place and I’m not ready to leave, but I’m also curious and excited for the next phase of my life.”

magazine format show during the practicum. Students created packages for the show, where producers and reporters had to work under deadline.

“When I ended up doing the practicum, I really, really fell in love with what we were doing, putting a show together,” Czarniak said. “For me, I was like, ‘This is right up my alley of interest.’”

After graduation in 2000, Czarniak worked as a production assistant for CNN in Atlanta.

“She had high aspirations,” Johnson said.

“To go from [JMU] to Atlanta was a pretty big deal.”

Czarniak gained her first on-air role as a news reporter for WAWS/WTEV-TV in Jacksonville, Florida. She then moved on to work for WTVJ-TV and the Speed Channel in Miami, Florida.

Czarniak’s breakthrough into the sports world came after joining WRC-TV (NBC4) in Washington, D.C. in 2005. During her time there, she was a sports anchor and reporter, reporting on the area’s professional sports teams, anchoring daily sports broadcasts and hosting various sports shows.

Czarniak joined ESPN in 2011.

“It’s amazing to me that I’m doing what I’m doing,” Czarniak said. “By that I mean the job that I have … I don’t want to say luck. I believe in timing, and that being a good person and working hard plays out.”

Because of her position and journey, Czarniak can be a person that JMU students look up to.

“I work with a lot students who have interest in sports media and sports communication whether it’s male or

female,” Kevin Warner said.

Warner is JMU’s director of athletics web operations and community relations. He also helped establish an Association for Women in Sports Media chapter at JMU in 2014.

“I think for those students it means a lot to turn on a TV to watch the most important programming for them and see someone from JMU on there,” Warner said.

“It’s worth a lot in pushing themselves to achieve something at the highest level …

It instills a sense of pride, connection and inspiration.”

This also means a lot to Czarniak.

“Honestly, it’s surreal,” Czarniak said.

“It’s amazing to me that people would consider me someone to look up to.”

Czarniak had a busy week on the job leading up to JMU’s graduation as she travelled between Chicago and Las Vegas.

On April 26, Czarniak flew out to Las Vegas in anticipation of blockbuster boxing match between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, which took place on May 2. On April 30, the first day of the NFL draft, she flew to Chicago to host an outdoor show before draft time. She then flew back to Las Vegas that night for a show and interviews on Friday morning covering the fight.

“It’s going to be really cool, I’m really pumped,” Czarniak said looking ahead at her schedule. “It’s going to be a crazy week. And somewhere in the middle of all that, I’m going to find the time to write the most important thing to deliver, my commencement speech … Who knows, I think I may be able to pull something from that experience to take with me to JMU.” Contact Richie Bozek at breezesports@gmail.com.

Four years later...

A letter to my freshman self as my journey at JMU comes to a close Dear Freshman Corey, You’re probably sitting in your Ikenberry Hall dorm room eating a chicken sandwich from Top Dog and watching music videos on MTVU as you read this.

You may be reflecting on a year that wasn’t at all what you expected, and in some ways (or most ways) disappointing.

However, I’m here to tell you that it got a lot better. Not just one of those cliché “it gets better” betters, but actually better.

No, you aren’t starting a career as a reality TV writer for Entertainment Weekly, nor are you replacing Jeff Probst as the host of “Survivor.” But you can at least say you had one hell of a comeback throughout your college career.

I don’t want to give away too much, but let’s just say your mother’s love of writing and your father’s ability to challenge everything have served you well.

And those are just your journalistic accomplishments.

You also became a leader on this campus. Not just one of those high

school organization leaders, but one who multiple people look up to and come to for advice and guidance.

You managed to conquer both quantity and quality on your résumé as well; so much, in fact, that you’re currently having a hard time fitting it all on just one page.

And, though less important, you can now count the number of parties you’ve been to on more than one hand. That goes for close friends, too.

Above all though, I’m proud of you for sticking it out. I’m glad you didn’t transfer. I’m glad you didn’t stay home.

Because if you had, you would’ve missed out on finding your passion. You also would’ve missed out on some great people along the way; the people you thought didn’t exist at this school. Because yes, there are people like you on this campus. You just have to get out there and find them.

So finish your sandwich and start that ghastly Spanish homework.

But don’t worry, it’ll all work itself out in the end. Just like it always does.
