THE BUCK HILL BREEZE

Hi Everyone,

Letter From The Editor

A

fter so many months of lock down, it is a pleasure (and gift) to be able to gather again here in Buck Hill. We’re on the courts, the links, the rinks, the trails, the streams, or at the pool. We’re gathering once again on porches, at the Fairway Grille, or local restaurants breaking bread with those friends we’ve missed. The kids are in camp club building skills and life-long friendships. We’re hearing lectures, attending meetings, and listening to vocalists. And we got to celebrate July 4 in the beloved, traditional Buck Hill way. It’s good to be back—these are the happy days of summer—enjoy every one of them.

SUMMER 2021

elcome to our little corner of paradise!

Stephen and Angela Lent Steve and Angela Lent (and Fiona, their lab mix), recently sold their home in Croton-on-Hudson and plan to share their time between Buck Hill Falls and a home near the beach in Lewes, DE. They found BH through a Google search. With kids in NY, Ohio, and Maryland, they wanted something in the mountains, near skiing and snow. Once they checked BHF out, they knew they wanted to live here. The Lents, their three grown children, and four grandchildren–Zachary, Anna, Charlotte, and Christopher–are all looking forward to spending time at Cottage 75 on Piney Road. Zachary is an up-and-coming golfer who also loves to fish. The girls and Christopher love horses, and Angela has already had her first lesson at the stables. The Lents are eager to take advantage of all Buck Hill Falls has to offer, including golf, tennis, lawn bowling, hiking, gardening, and the arts. Most importantly, says Angela, “We look forward to being part of this amazing community and getting to know our neighbors, some of whom we’ve already met.” Andrew and Francesca Dickson Robert (who goes by his middle name Andrew), Francesca, and their children Camille and Cole are thrilled to be in Buck Hill. Though their main abode is in Park Slope, NY they are looking forward to spending many long weekends in BH and will be in residence at their new cottage 809 on Fox Run for the

second four-week session of camp club. They look forward to hiking, swimming, and playing golf (for the first time in over a decade). Andrew plays tennis, too, and enjoys pretty much any sport out there. Camille anticipates meeting new friends before camp. Andrew and Francesca discovered Buck Hill through cottager Emily Poler, a former work colleague of Francesca’s. Ralph and Amy Rosa Ralph and Amy are especially excited to meet their fellow cottagers because Buck Hill Falls is their “first stop on Ralph’s retirement train.” In May, Ralph finished work as President of the Americas division of a German-based manufacturing company, and the Rosas moved from Rhode Island the next week. They have two married daughters in Philadelphia. Cottage 25 on Falls Drive will initially serve as the Rosa’s fulltime residence, but they plan to also purchase a home in suburban Philly to be near their oldest daughter. Amy has been semi-retired since raising their daughters, keeping busy with tennis and a few writing and blog projects. Both are avid tennis players. Ralph is a golfer as well, so Amy figures this might be a good time to take some lessons. They also love paddle tennis, want to explore pickleball, and look forward to discovering the BH trails and waterfalls. Jacob Skinner and Christina Chiu Jacob and Christina live in NYC with daughters Sophie and Natalie. They both play golf and tennis, enjoy cooking and working around the house and apartment on projects together. Sophie and Natalie both dance, ice skate, swim, play softball, and do most of the other activities young children enjoy. The entire family is very excited to meet everyone in the community and then hunker down at Cottage 733.

Kathy Megliola and Frank Tropea Kathy grew up in Buck Hill, attending Camp Club at age 11, where she learned to play golf, and has been playing ever since. Twenty-three years ago, Kathy first met Frank when they were paired in “The Strode” golf tournament at Buck Hill. Just last summer, their paths crossed again when Frank was having lunch on the patio at the golf club. Kathy came around the corner to check the scoreboard for the results of the first day of the Men’s Club Championship and . . . lightning struck! Kathy and Frank got engaged in March, and will be getting married this December in Ocean Reef, FL. When not in Buck Hill at cottage 283 on Pheasant Lane, they spend time in West Chester, PA, Ocean Reef, and Cape May, NJ.

Anna and Kirk Warshaw The Warshaws, natives and part-time residents of Madison, NJ, have been frequent visitors to the Poconos for 40 years. While spending time at Skytop, they played a handful of golf rounds in BHF over the years. They intend to use Buck Hill as a summer and holiday retreat, and expect their three adult children will use it as a winter base on weekends to enjoy the numerous cold weather activities nearby, while Anna and Kirk stay warm on Hilton Head from October to March. Anna is a retired insurance underwriter. Kirk, a CPA, is involved in the management of an R&D entity with operations in Florida and Albuquerque. Kirk and Anna’s family includes two daughters: Allison Shearman, her husband Rob, and boys Owen and Caden, and Bethany Kramer, her husband Max, and their son Cole. Son Matthew is entering his senior year at FDU where he is majoring in Accounting and is a member of the Men’s Varsity Soccer team. The Warshaws expect to be regulars on the golf

People course, tennis courts, nature trails, and at the pool. Kirk is convinced that one of his grandsons will turn out to be a world champion in lawn bowling, while he intends to become a world class nap-taker on their new deck. They are excited to be a part of the Buck Hill community and look forward to making many new friends. Adam and Kyeong-ah Levan The Levans relocated from NYC to Ambler, PA eight years ago and were subsequently looking for a summer escape in the Poconos. They stumbled across Buck Hill Falls, spending two great weeks renting the Keegan cottage on Vireo Rd. That was four years ago. They finally found their way back—this time as happy new owners of Cottage 107 at 208 Olde Hemlock Lane. Adam and Kyeong-ah have two sons, Jonah and Samson whom they plan to introduce to the variety of activities available here –hiking, biking, golf, tennis, swimming, and skiing. Lucky for that, as those are the same activities their parents want to participate in. Adam is a high school Latin teacher at Germantown Academy in Ft. Washington, and Kyeong-ah, in addition to managing a busy household, stays connected to her 20year teaching career as a part-time math tutor. Adam adds, “we are so excited to join the community.”

Bit of history: Marsha and Richard graduated from Penn in 1966. When Caroline graduates, it will be 61 years after her grandparents.

T

o kick off the Summer of 2021, the Youth Activities Committee sponsored our first ever Meet & Greet at Paiste Pond on June 27. Over 150 campers (and their families) got to meet their counselors before the first day of camp. Kids and parents alike made new friends and reconnected with old ones during the two-hour event. Parachute, glitter tattoos, and soccer were a few activities that helped make the event a success. Of course, some sweet treats were very well received. Monday, June 28 marked the first day of camp with a very full roster of campers for the summer. One of the first events for the kids was to learn about our feathered friends. The Conservation Foundation nature team partnered with Darryl Speicher, a naturalist with avian expertise, who taught the kids to recognize native bird calls, how to recognize various bird behaviors, and how to identify different species. Camp Club thanks Rick Mittereder and Jackie Speicher for organizing this entertaining and informative presentation. The campers loved every minute of it!

Do join us for a trip to Storm King Art Center on Monday, August 9 which will be led by cottager and architect, Dan McCoubrey. rt Paths 2021 opened on June 20 to eager hikers looking to take in our newest collection of art installations along the Glade Path. This year’s event boasts 11 artists, six from right here in Buck Hill. Come and find St. Oscar, Water Flow, and Remembering My Roots, among others. ArtPaths runs until Columbus Day weekend. Each pass of the path offers new surprises. And finally, look for Aaron Krach’s latest billboard instalation along Route 390 in Cresco, sponsored by a Buck Hill Cottager. Aaron says of this work, “I look for words or phrases that mean different things to everyone. Lately I have been thinking about time a lot and how everything, good or bad, starts and finishes. e’re happy to report the results of many outings thus far this summer. If your game needs tweaking, get on board with one of our pros for a private lesson, or join one of our clinics to focus on a particular weakness. Our schedule of events and recurring outings should cover almost everyone’s playing needs. C’mon, let’s have fun! One Day Member Guest On June 18, 50 teams in two flights headed out to play better ball of partners in the Men’s One Day Member Guest Tournament. The team of Richard Leist and his guest, Philip Varughese, won in a match of cards. In the low gross (no handicaps), the winning team of Tom White and his guest, Guy Warren, came out victorious. First flight winners were Steve Gannon and guest Adam Leven.

Sports Whelan to the top. Special thanks to Jen Ryan for hosting a very swell after-affair at her beautiful cottage with a pot-luck dinner fit for a queen. New & Old What a great day of golf as many of our new cottagers got teamed up with some of our not-as-new cottagers in the 2021 New Neighbors Scramble. The purpose: to introduce newcomers to just one of the great amenities in BHF. And the results: 1. Pat McGrath III, Claire O’Mara, Steve & Angela Lent 2. Tom Ross, Janet Caswell, Jacob Skinner & Christina Chiu 3. Bill & Claire Castellano, Bob & Leslie Bohner

Golden Golfer Just to prove that golf can be a life-long endeavor, Nancy Smith Hayden shot her age (95 at the time) while here on the Buck Hill course. Nancy (who is Patty Lawrence’s mom) grew up coming to BH and learned to play golf in the Junior Golf program in the late 30’s. They had quite a large coed golf program then. Obviously that program really worked! Congrats to Nancy.

Junior Golf Ed Urban and Chris Benner will be instructing a Kids Golf Camp throughout the summer on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 4pm. We will be covering a new topic weekly and include some fun instructional games to track each golfer’s progress. Spots are limited and they do fill up quickly so make sure to sign up. Our Junior Golf Summit Camp, at the end of the summer, offers instruction in a more condensed time frame with pros Chris Benner, Ed Urban, and Gary Clark. To test their instruction, we host a weekly golf tournament for the kids (7-15 year-olds) on Monday afternoons with tee times from 3-3:45pm (right after Camp Club). Junior Golf is comprised of 4-hole, 6-hole, and 9-hole divisions. We highly encourage all kids to have their own clubs and to play a bit before jumping straight into Junior Golf. Kids will walk the course and carry their bags. The 4-hole and 6-hole groups go out with supervision from parents, siblings, or one of the golf staff. Junior Golf Mondays run until August 16 with one week off for the Junior Club Championship. The Joan S. Ruvane Junior Club Championship is one of the most prestigious events of the year here in Buck Hill Falls. It’s a two-day ringer format tournament hosted on Sunday, August 1 and Monday, August 2 for kids ages 7-18. With boys and girls divisions in 4-, 6-, 9-, and 18-holes, there’s a place for every young golfer.

Tennis Talk

W

ith a new Director of Racquet Sports, Luis Qintero, and new assistant pros, tennis has been a big hit this summer.

• Things got started on Saturday, June 26 with the Junior Kickoff Party. 36 children attended the tennis carnival where young participants of different ages played the most festive and entertaining games in the world of tennis. At the end of the event, coach Eduardo took the glory by winning the Tennis Dunk Overhead contest against coach Joaquin.

The youngest participants hang with pro Irene Recuenco.

• Then on Sunday, June 27, the adults participated in the first adult mixer of the season. After the games, the 32 players watched an entertaining Pro Exhibition. Eduardo won all his matches and Luis won his match after not competing for over nine years! • The Davis Cup event kicked off the 4th of July weekend with an amazing performance by team Ecuador, who won the coveted tournament. Competing countries included Ecuador, Italy, Russia, and Great Britain.

Welcome Back!

A

fter more than a year of hunkering down during the COVID-19 pandemic, Buck Hillers greeted the Fourth of July as an opportunity to open up, reach out, and greet each other. We weren’t going to let a little rain dampen our spirits, even though it meant moving the traditional, pre-holiday Metzgar’s Farm picnic to the tent on the Inn site, where food was enjoyed and games were hotly contested.

Mill Jonakait, Kelly List Henry, and Carol Klatt (from left) were on hand to sell Lot & Cot goodies.

Helping Our Neighbors

W

hile the devastating spread of COVID-19 seems to be dwindling, many folks in our larger community still find themselves unable to house, feed, or protect their loved ones. The Buck Hill Community Services Committee was very active during the winter. Thanks to your generosity, we distributed funds collected in 2020, and were able to add two new organizations which serve our community, including our spotlight charity of the month described below. Spotlight Charity: St. Vincent’s St. Vincent’s is the charity outreach arm of the local Holy Trinity Catholic Church. For decades, this group has served people in need throughout their diocese, which extends from Stroudsburg to Scranton. They provide clothing, shelter, and food, with help from local restaurants to deliver holiday meals at no cost to the recipients. In addition, they offer safe harbor for young mothers, provide newborn supplies and basic necessities to help new families get a fresh start. This year, our donation will be disbursed exclusively in Barrett Township, providing food, toiletries, and housing for our most vulnerable neighbors. Every dollar you give goes directly to needy recipients right here in our larger

After the rainstorm, the Fourth of July holiday was bright and clear. Organized with extraordinary efficiency by Kelly List Henry (who took over after Susan Frehse’s long tenure), the day’s festivities began with the ride of Paul Revere I (Gabby Saffer) and Paul Revere II (Katie Kelly) who spread the warning “The British are coming!” throughout the community. We escaped the invasion once again and proudly raised the American flag on the Inn site. The parade followed, led by President George Washington and First Lady Martha (Stanley and Nicki Doggett). Following them was a motorcade of antique cars, fire trucks, and golf carts decorated in red, white and blue. The adorable kids from Camp Club, led by Director Chrissy Caiazzo-Pritchard and staff, were among the marchers. The parade ended with a snappy procession of horses and riders. As we gathered at the pool, it became clear that this was one enormous turnout of new and seasoned cottagers, all eager to celebrate once again. Emceed by Lot & Cot President Mill Jonakait, the program began with Beth Goldwater singing The Star-Spangled Banner, followed by rousing

patriotic songs from Camp Clubbers. The oldest Clubbers then recited the Thirteen Colonies poem and released a single homing pigeon as a symbol of freedom and peace. Dr. Rick Mittereder, who has served as our medical consultant throughout the pandemic, gave a brief address on the status of the pandemic in Buck Hill and read a poem written long ago by a Buck Hiller extolling the virtues of Buck Hill as a refuge and “citadel of peace.” A stirring rendition of God Bless America led by Tom O’Malley concluded the ceremony. But the day was not over: pool games (led by Pool Director Michele Saffer and her lifeguards), a BBQ dinner at the Fairway Grille, and The new Buck Hill Falls cookbook and a fireworks extravaganza completed logo apron were on sale at the pool our annual summer ceremony. tradition.

We are proud to continue this long-honored Buck Hill tradition of helping those in need and we could not help these community organizations without your support. on tourtle.com, where you’ll find a general community-wide guideline tourtle, with links to individual protocol tourtles for each of the separate amenities (golf, pool, tennis, and lawn bowling). These will be updated as CDC and state guidelines change. (For those unfamiliar with tourtle, it is simply a web application you can access using your browser. Just go to tourtle.com and search for “COVID.” If you create a tourtle account —which is free—you can click on “Groups” and join the Buck Hill Falls Group (where you will find our protocol tourtles, which will be updated as things change). Automatic Electronic Defibrillators (AED) are strategically placed throughout Buck Hill Falls. Our chief security officer, Andy Andrejcisk, confirms that all AEDs are checked weekly; batteries and pads are checked yearly and replaced if necessary. Certification classes on basic life support/ cardio pulmonary resuscitation (BLS/CPR) had been offered regularly in the preCOVID past to all Cottagers, and we hope to resume these classes in the near future. The Buck Hill Conservation Foundation’s website lists numerous ongoing and upcoming events planned for the 2021 season which will afford cottagers a safe and healthy way to venture into the surrounding lands, as well as some interactive programs that will be held in conjunction with Camp Club. Look at the website for details.

ur small community has come a long way in beating back the COVID-19 virus, but we can’t relax our efforts because we need everyone to get vaccinated–especially now with the added risk of the Delta variant, which has become the dominant version of the disease globally. The vaccines used in the US have proven extremely effective in preventing serious illness. In fact, vaccines made by Pfizer/Moderna and AstraZeneca offer more than 90% protection against hospitalization and deaths from the Delta variant. Those who are unvaccinated have the greatest risk of becoming seriously ill. To keep ourselves safe, it is important to stay educated on the latest virus news and abide by the protocols. For an outdoor adventure, walk the trail at Ice Lake (on Route 191/390 in Cresco) the week of August 15-21. Enjoy a “Tale on the Trail,” a self-guided StoryWalk featuring the book Daniel Finds a Poem, by Micha Archer. Read this beautiful picture book page-by-page as you walk along this easy, well-groomed trail. The library is open for browsing, but we recommend appointments for using the computers since we can only accommodate a limited number of users at one time. We ask all visitors to wear a face mask (even if you’ve been vaccinated) and respect social distancing to keep everyone safe and healthy. We will resume collecting fines for overdue materials starting September 1. Fines were waived during the worst of the pandemic, but now it’s time to return to normal operations. Check out our e-resources: in addition to downloadable books, audiobooks, magazines, movies, and music through Hoopla and OverDrive, our digital resources include access to newspapers, HeritageQuest (family history search), study aids and homework help (Brainfuse), and much more. SUMMER 2021

Update From The DEI Committee

T

he Buck Hill Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (formed last summer in response to George Floyd’s murder) is continuing its work this year. The Committee is a core group of approximately a dozen Buck Hill cottagers who are discussing DEI-related issues and how we might address them in our own lives, in our immediate community, and in the larger community surrounding Buck Hill Falls. This summer, our first meeting was led by Christina Sopko, head of the DEI committee at a private school in New Jersey, where she teaches. Stina conducted an enlightening workshop on Implicit Bias for group members. On June 19th (Juneteenth), the committee sponsored a very well-attended presentation by critically acclaimed and award-winning author Joseph O’Neill, speaking on the foundation

of Critical Race Theory. This was Joe’s second appearance at Buck Hill: he came here several years ago to discuss his New York Times bestseller, Netherland, at a Foxhowe event. Joe is a staff writer for The New Yorker and a professor at Bard College, where he teaches creative writing as well as a course on the Foundation of Critical Race Theory.

Author Joseph O’Neill addressed critical race theory in his talk at the Tennis Tea.

Stuff Taha Vahanaty started the program by reciting a poem he wrote for the occasion. Taha, a recent Stroudsburg High School graduate and this year’s winner of PA’s statewide spoken poetry contest, is the founder of The Acceptance Project (TAP), which promotes civil dialogue among students on controversial topics in a safe and accepting space. Taha also talked and showed a video about this summer’s TAP Camp, which is enrolling 28 students from school districts throughout the Pocono region. Through TAP Camp, these students will learn how to start Acceptance Projects at their own schools. This camp is sponsored by the Weiler Foundation. For more information visit https://www.theacceptanceproject.org/ tap-into-summer. If anyone is interested in taking part and/or joining the DEI committee, please email Ann Caggiano at annmcagg@gmail.com so you can be included in the DEI mailing list and see the schedule of meetings and events.
